Jackson Bazaar Youth movie review: Indrans and Jaffar Idukki steal the show
While jackson bazaar youth contains several moments and scenes that may feel contrived and lack a natural flow, debutant shamal sulaiman's commendable direction and the stellar performances by senior actors like indrans, jaffar idukki, and gopalan adat uplift the overall mood of the film..
Don’t we stumble upon films that emerge out of nowhere, where we had no expectations or hopes, but ultimately provide us with a delightful experience? These are the movies that could have easily been overshadowed by a superstar flick or a grandiose high-budget project if released simultaneously. Jackson Bazaar Youth, the debut film by director Shamal Sulaiman, falls into this category.
Featuring a talented cast including Indrans, Jaffar Idukki, Lukman Avaran, Chinnu Chandni, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Fahim Safar, and Anagha Ashok, Jackson Bazaar Youth narrates the story of a group of people residing on a parcel of purampokku (poramboke) land in Kerala’s Kollam district. The vibrant youngsters of this locality affectionately named their settlement Jackson Bazaar, after the esteemed leader of the local brass band, Jackson Velayyan (Jaffar Idukki). Renowned for crafting mesmerising music that evokes sheer euphoria, their band is appropriately called Jackson Bazaar Youth. Among the band members, Appu (Lukman Avaran) holds a special place as Jackson Velayyan’s closest companion.
Being situated on purampokku land, which technically belongs to the government, the residents of Jackson Bazaar have persistently protested against the state machinery in their pursuit of securing permanent residency. Simultaneously, the state has made multiple attempts to displace these inhabitants to facilitate the construction of a National Highway stretch. However, the residents of Jackson Bazaar refuse to yield and are determined to continue their protest until they receive what rightfully belongs to them. Unfortunately, the local police perceive this case as a matter of pride, as they feel challenged by a group they consider as “nobodies”. In an appalling turn of events, one of the Jackson Bazaar members is unlawfully killed by the police after enduring custodial torture. Enraged by this injustice, a few band members violently retaliate, leaving one of the policemen severely injured. Consequently, they are compelled to go into hiding, as the entire machinery is now on the hunt for the alleged ‘culprits’. Despite their attempts to escape, the band members, one after the other, are apprehended by the police. Amidst this turmoil, the band finds themselves entangled in further complications. It is at this point that the merciless Circle Inspector Sadasivam (Indrans) arrives at the Kollam Rural police station with the intention of “teaching the colony people a lesson.” The remaining part of the film focuses on how the band members navigate through this intricate web of problems they find themselves in.
Right from the start, Jackson Bazaar Youth sets the tone for a good journey through its thoughtful approach. One of the initial indicators of this is the unique way in which they express gratitude towards all the individuals who contributed to the project. Instead of leaving the screen empty and the atmosphere silent, the filmmakers of JBY employ a captivating brass band piece, followed by an animated video that gracefully showcases the names of the entire crew. This creative presentation adds an engaging touch, creating a positive impression and setting the stage for what lies ahead.
Following this, the audiences are promptly introduced to the band and their music. However, this segment feels somewhat rushed since it could have been an opportunity to give more prominence to the band’s music. Nevertheless, the film swiftly shifts its focus towards the challenges confronted by the residents of Jackson Bazaar, such as the scarcity of water and the looming threat of losing their cherished land. While skillfully highlighting the struggles faced by individuals who lack their own land and belong to oppressed communities, the film fearlessly exposes the state forces, particularly the police, as complicit in further suppressing the marginalised. This is primarily driven by caste pride and an intoxicating sense of power, where any attempts to question their authority provoke their hostile behaviour.
While the film contains several moments and scenes that may feel contrived and lack a natural flow, Shamal Sulaiman’s commendable direction and the stellar performances by senior actors like Indrans, Jaffar Idukki, and Gopalan Adat uplift the overall mood of the film. Indrans’ portrayal of a powerful and relentless police officer, driven to any extreme to accomplish his mission, sends chills down the spine. Jaffar’s portrayal of Jackson Velayyan showcases his versatility as an actor, leaving one amazed at his ability to tackle diverse characters. Similarly, Gopalan shines in his role as Shankaran, one of the members of JBY, in a movie that runs for less than two hours but suffers from glaring narration issues. Chinnu Chandni also delivers a memorable performance as a cop disgusted by the actions of her colleagues. Lukman, despite his track record, delivers only a decent performance in this film.
JBY serves as a compelling example of the transformative power of tight editing in a film. However, the abrupt shifts from one element to another in the narration could have been smoothed out with some script revisions by Usman Marath, ensuring a more cohesive and seamless narrative flow. On the other hand, cinematographer Kannan Patteri adeptly captures the essence and mood of each scene, striking a balance without going overboard or imposing a personal style. Editors Appu N Bhattathiri and Shaijas KM deserve credit for their meticulous work in crafting a polished and satisfactory final product. While Govind Vasantha’s songs do not reach great heights, his background score shines throughout the film, leaving a lasting impact. Additionally, costume designer Irshad Cherukunnu deserves special recognition for his contribution, particularly for the stunning uniforms worn by the band members.
Kudos to director-turned-producer Zakariya Mohammed, known for helming films like Sudani from Nigeria and Halal Love Story, for bankrolling and backing a modest project that holds substantial substance.
In short, while the film may not be flawless or exceptional, it is still worth watching and serves as a promising debut for Shamal Sulaiman. At a time when film associations are raising concerns about exorbitant fees demanded by actors, Jackson Bazaar Youth presents a compelling counter-argument that talent extends beyond the realm of superstars. It reminds us that age or the presence of grey hair should not diminish the value or impact of actors in the industry.

Indrans-starrer 'Jackson Bazaar Youth' is quirky, yet emotional | Movie Review
What does a lively music band have to do with land acquisition in a village in Central Kerala? Director Shamal Sulaiman's 'Jackson Bazaar Youth' is quite inventive in that it interestingly interlinks two unlikely aspects.
The story revolves around a retired army man who is a huge music buff. He sets up a band 'Jackson Bazaar Youth' with a bunch of youngsters in the poramboke (Malayalam for Government-owned) land he lives in. His jovial nature and experience make him a favourite among the colony folks.
However, their happiness is shortlived as they face eviction when the government acquires land to develop the National Highway. He and Shankar (Lukman Avaran), a Jackson Bazaar Youth member, are at the forefront of the protests against land acquisition. Jackson is taken into police custody and is tortured.
Movie Review | Indrans, Bhavana-starrer 'Rani- The Real Story' is a pacy investigative thriller
Review | Njaanum Pinnoru Njaanum: Odd tale of an enigmatic philanthropist
'Jackson Bazaar Youth' is a story that attempts to explore the emotional side of landless, downtrodden people who face eviction. The film stays clear of politics, but the issue still finds its relevance in a state that has had its fair share of protests against eviction and unfair compensation.
However, the focus shifts to police brutality. There are scenes depicting violence, which are painful, but the filmmaker has approached them sensitively. Jaffer Idukki's performance in each of these scenes proves yet again his ability to portray intense characters of different depths. A recent example is his Maniyan in 'Kooman'.
The movie has its poignant moments but also manages to be funny and quirky. Indran's arrival in the later half of the film adds flavour to the movie. He plays a cop who takes charge as the new station house officer. He is highly unpredictable and sassy, yet mysterious and almost whacky.
His presence feels towering, though he is a man of small stature and that is the depth at which Indrans has played his character.
Those who have watched Lukman at his aggressive best in Khalid Rahman's 'Thallumala', won't be surprised to see him deliver another punch or two in this film, which also has some action. Chinnu Chandni Nair and Abhiram Radhakrishnan also play the roles to perfection.
The theme is quite different and is elevated by the treatment, music and visuals. The overall setting has a stage-play effect, but that does not take away the charm of the film. The screenplay by Usman Marath seems superficial in places but the dialogues and turn of events make the film interesting. There are some loose ends in the movie, especially when Indrans arrives at the scene. Overall, 'Jackson Youth Bazaar' is a good addition to films in Mollywood that are attempting to stand apart with its theme and treatment.

Jackson Bazaar Youth review: A powerful musical that speaks about relevant social issues faced by the underprivileged

For a movie based on the traditional band troupe, Jackson Bazaar Youth has all the elements to be an interesting one. In this brand-new movie, debutant director Shamal Sulaiman has something different to tell the audience.
The movie starts with an impressive anthem of Jackson Bazaar Youth, a band that has an animated version of Jackson Velayudhan, the troupe leader played by Jaffer Idukki.
Amen (2017) was a similar movie based on a band troupe and fantasy elements. If Amen was based on fantasy, Jackson Bazaar Youth deals with the realities faced by the underprivileged.
Drinking-water problems and shelter of common people are some of the burning issues faced by the people of Jackson Baazar, located in the Kollam district of Kerala.
The director has chosen all cinematic liberties to tell his story.
Critical of the system
The name Jackson Bazaar Youth suggests that the movie is an entertainer with elements of comedy and songs.
But it’s the other way: The movie speaks about the serious issue of displacement of people from their houses in the name of development.
Jackson Bazaar is a colony identified by the National Highway Authority to be taken over for the widening of roads.
The members of the troupe — Jackson Velayyan, Shankaran (Gopalan Adat), Appu (Lukman Avaran), Rameshan (Fahim Safar), and Rekha (Anagha Ashok) — live in this colony.
Jackson Velayyan is the leader of the troupe and is an ex-Army person. His love towards music has made people in the colony join him with the band and perform shows at local festivals and other occasions and places.

But the real problem faced by these people is that they fear being displaced by the authorities in the name of development.
We are familiar with such situations, and the chaos that ensues, through news reports.
Jackson Vellayan turns out to be a martyr in the fight against the right to live. His death is caused by the brutality of the police in their custody.
However, police brutality has to be taken as something that has happened in some cases. Or else it will be generalised and give the impression that the police department is against the common people.
As mentioned, Jackson Bazaar Youth mainly discusses drinking-water problems and the right to live on one’s land.
Telling this story against the backdrop of a band is apt, as they are underprivileged and work for daily wages.
A mirror to the society
The director has taken a strong stand to show similar custody death happenings in Kerala.
Jackson Bazaar Youth , written by Usman Marath, has struggles and protests that are a mirror to the happenings around us, which privileged people choose not to watch.
The minute details in the movie can be connected, and the subplot of a hit-and-run case and the involvement of Sub Inspector Aravindan (Abhiram Radhakrishnan) in it were all good.
The performances
Suhail Shaman’s ‘Jackson Bazaar Youth’. (Twitter)
Jackson Bazaar Youth has power-packed performances by the lead actors. Jaffer Idukki as Jackson Velayyan delivers one of his career-best performances.
Despite being in fewer scenes, the emotions — both as a passionate musician and a helpless man struggling to retain his shelter — he brings to the screen were good.
Lukman Avaran as Appu plays an important role. It’s good to see the young actors getting good roles. He got critical acclaim for his previous films Saudi Vellaka (2022)and Sulaikha Manzil (2023). Gopalan Adat as Shankaran had an important role to play as Vellayan’s friend.
Chinnu Chandni as Sub Inspector Shafna has her problems at home. She was a witness to an untoward incident and that is haunting her.
Her performance as a young police officer has to be appreciated. She received a good role after her debut movie Thamaasha (2019).
Indrans steals the show
Indrans plays a pivotal role in ‘Jackson Bazaar Youth’. (Supplied)
Indrans is the show-stealer in the movie as a policeman with a special character. Some scenes were similar to that of a mainstream hero.
The first half of the movie sets up the momentum, and Indrans (Sadhashivam), a pivotal character in Jackson Bazaar Youth , is introduced just before the interval. The veteran actor takes the movie to another level with his mannerisms and dialogue delivery.
His character as the Circle Inspector has many dimensions in the second half. The real motive of Sadhashivam is only revealed at the end of the movie, which is another interesting plot point.
Sadhashivam’s entry and his mission to join his colleagues to take revenge on Shankaran, who is part of the group that attacked another policeman, is a tricky one. That policeman was pivotal in murdering Velayyan. The audience will also be in two monids: Is Sadasivam a saviour or the villain? Revealing that would be a spoiler.
One major weak point in the movie would be the sudden transition of Indrans. But commercial cinema demands gimmicks to woo the audience.

Technically sound.
The music by Govind Vasantha goes well with the movie. It has two songs, and the fast number is not the usual Dappankuthu song, but a mix of slow and fast music.
The background music with importance to trumpet gave a different mood to Jackson Bazaar Youth .
The cinematography by Deepak D Menon was good. He very well utilised the picturesque location in Kollam.
The final take
Jackson Bazaar Youth deals with some important social issues faced by underprivileged people, accompanied by amazing performances.

Shamal Sulaiman’s entertaining ‘Jackson Bazaar Youth’ makes you think it's a drama about the underprivileged before pulling the rug from under your feet
Jackson Bazaar Youth Movie Cast & Crew
They live in a poramboke area called Jackson Bazaar. They wear yellow shirts and maroon pants. They play brass and percussion instruments. They are all men, both old and young. And they are really popular with the locals, as is evident from the reception they get after playing at a church festival. They are the ‘Jackson Bazaar Youth’ – and within the band, the most popular member is the trumpet player named Jackson Velayyan. From his very first scene, where he washes his trumpet with water, we know we are going to love this character, played by the superb Jaffer Idukki. He comes across like a gruff teddy-bear, but he does not overdo the cuteness. He plays Jackson Velayyan like a mentor, a leader, and above all, a musician who loves his music more than anything else in the world.
The flow of the screenplay, Usman Marath, is a little strange – and I don't mean this in a necessarily bad way. The inciting incident is the announcement that the National Highway Authority is going to build a road through Jackson Bazaar. Velayyan is determined that he and his people will not be evicted from the land their fathers and forefathers lived in. He plans a protest, but the police get wind of it and he is arrested. This scene is a beauty, and Jaffer Idukki plays it beautifully. It's as though he knows he may never play the instrument again, so he picks up the trumpet and fills the air with soulful music. Govind Vasantha's brass-filled songs are terrific, but the mournful theme music is an absolute standout.
What do you think will happen next? You may think Velayyan's arrest will unify and mobilise the rest of the band and the rest of the poramboke-area residents. You may think that the film is going to become a grim David versus Goliath story, with people without deeds and documents fighting against the powerful System. Yes, there are acts of retaliation, but this is a commercial film that understands that the System is too powerful to be overcome by a few angry young men. The most subversive thought in Jackson Bazaar Youth is that, if you want revenge, you have to get it from inside the System. I cannot reveal more – but this subversive thought transforms the story into a series of events that take place within a powerful embodiment of the System: the police station. The writing is not consistently strong, but once this design comes together in your head, you may appreciate this movie a lot more, right down to its twist ending.
We have heard of the Butterfly Effect. We could call this The Ricochet Effect. Someone tries to escape, but instead gets involved with a bunch of drunk men partying in a rented car, which leads to the owner of the car being arrested… And so on. Through the police, we see how oppressive the System is. There's custodial (i.e. physical) torture. There's the psychological torture of a young couple: the young man's name is Naseer and the young woman is Sheela. (It gets labelled "the kissing case") Even if everything is not completely convincing, there’s some suspense about what the hell is happening now, and how the hell we are going to return to the events of Jackson Bazaar – especially with the arrival of Indrans at the interval point. In an entertaining, masala -flavoured performance, the actor plays Inspector Sadasivam. His stick-figure frame may not suggest a super-cop, but his brain and his determination are his real weapons. The way he connects all three cases in the police station is a brilliant bit of mainstream-film writing.
All the actors are good, especially Lukman Avaran as a young member of the band and Chinnu Chandni as a cop who is unable to attend her sister's engagement. Even when the script gets into the inevitable over-the-top zone, the direction is beautifully understated. Things I'd have protested against in another movie left me quite moved here. There's a long stretch – some five to six minutes – of a funeral. But it's not cynically melodramatic. It does not pander to the audience. It tugs at our hearts with honesty. The gorgeous cinematography by Deepak D Menon opts for unusually bright colours – fantasy-style neon lighting instead of going all gritty and grungy. It may be another indicator of the elusive nature of the film, and its Shankar-influenced narrative roots. Jackson Bazaar Youth is not perfect, but it's a solid example of how to dust off clichés and make them fun again.

Jackson Bazaar Youth Review: Promising premise undone by a lackadaisical narrative
Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).
Opening with Govind Vasantha's delightful trumpet-heavy music, the first few minutes of Jackson Bazaar Youth ( JBY ) exude the mood of a musical drama. But it doesn't take too long before we realise that the film aims to discuss something much more serious and relevant. Debutant Shamal Sulaiman seems to be inspired by the anti-caste and anti-establishment films, particularly from the Tamil industry. That aside, even the worldbuilding and aesthetics of JBY are reminiscent of the small-scale thrillers made in Tamil.
Cast: Lukman, Indrans, Jaffer Idukki, Chinnu Chandni
Directed by: Shamal Sulaiman
Jackson Bazaar, a ghetto situated in the government's poramboke land, is inhabited by around 15 families. For years, they have been fighting for the land's ownership, and these protests are spearheaded by the members of a brass band named Jackson Bazaar Youth. The cops counter these protests with iron fists resulting in clashes. It reaches a point where the police force is unleashed to hunt down a few men on the run.
Though the title Jackson Bazaar Youth suggests a story about youngsters, it is two seniors who stand tall and hold the film together. While it's Jaffer Idukki who impresses in the first half, the second half belongs to Indrans. Jaffer plays Jackson Velayyan (Jaffer Idukki), fondly called Paappan, who heads the band and the bazaar. It's a character that commands love and respect, and Jaffer gets it spot-on with his inimitable style. The narrative takes a turn when something drastic happens to him triggering a chain of events, which lead up to the arrival of Indrans. Though we generally don't associate Indrans with 'massy', ruthless characters, this film subverts all such notions. To start off with, he gets a kickass intro—the kind that's usually reserved for stars. By creating a mystery around him, Usman Maarath's writing succeeds in piquing our curiosity at the interval block.
However, the film falters big time by not sustaining the momentum. In the second half, as most of the action is set within the confines of the police station, the makers introduce some new characters, which include cops of different shades, a young couple, and a rich loudmouth. By concentrating more on them and their interpersonal dynamics, the narrative shifts focus from the actual issue. Despite the fact that a few lives are at stake, there are hardly any tense moments. In this supposed race-against-time thriller, there are clear pacing issues, which gives the audience enough time to think and reflect on where things are going wrong. All this despite the runtime being just 111 minutes!
In spite of all the shortcomings, JBY warrants a few eyeballs for the fact that it showcases the discrimination faced by the underprivileged. It is also commendable a young team chose to expose caste and custodial violence—a rarity in Malayalam cinema.

Jackson Bazaar, a small community on Poramboke land, is at risk of eviction due to the development of the National Highway. The movie follows Jackson Velayyan and his band group Jackson Bazaar Youth, who act as guardians of the Poramboke land. As the film progresses, Velayyan gets arrested for planning a protest against the land acquisition. Issues arise from this point onward.
Star Performance
Although Jackson Bazaar Youth has moments that could be perceived as forced or artificial, the excellent performances of veteran actors Indrans and Jaffer Idukki lift the overall tone. There are depictions of police brutality and Jaffer Idukki's portrayal in these scenes demonstrates his ability to capture passionate characters with intense emotions. The arrival of Indrans in the latter part of the movie adds further taste to it. He portrays a new station house officer with a sarcastic and unpredictable nature. Lukman is more of a supporting character and is there for the heroic action.
Strong political undertones are evident in the first part of the film. Shamal Sulaiman demonstrates the system's repressive attitude most harshly by exposing land politics and the casteist mindset among administrators. The second part is not as political and traditional and instead divulges into a thriller pattern. The casting somewhat reveals the surprise ahead of time. Given the number of issues that need addressing, the film loses its focus by bringing suspense into the plot.
What's There?
● Idukki’s outstanding performance
● Lukman’s action-packed valor
● Brilliant score
What's Not There?
● Inconsistent screenplay and plotline

Jackson Bazaar Youth movie review: Indrans and Jaffar Idukki steal the show While Jackson Bazaar Youth contains several moments and scenes that may feel contrived and lack a natural flow, debutant Shamal Sulaiman's commendable direction and the stellar performances by senior actors like Indrans, Jaffar Idukki, and Gopalan Adat uplift the overall mood of the film.
Gopika Is, May 20, 2023, 01.07 AM IST Critic's Rating: 3.0/5. Jackson Bazaar Youth has the makings of a wonderful movie, but falls short in key moments. Govind Vasantha's music saves it to some ...

Cast: Lukman, Indrans, Jaffer Idukki, Chinnu Chandni. Directed by: Shamal Sulaiman. Jackson Bazaar, a ghetto situated in the government's poramboke land, is inhabited by around 15 families. For years, they have been fighting for the land's ownership, and these protests are spearheaded by the members of a brass band named Jackson Bazaar Youth.
Govind Vasantha's tracks lend heart and soul to the characters in Jackson Bazaar Youth. The mournful trumpet track alone will linger in your mind long after you watch the film. The film is not without its flaws, though. One gets the impression that there are at least two unnecessary characters in the film.
