UN Jobs : how to build a career in United nations

Getting a job in the UN is a dream for many people, as a UN job is an amazing chance to grow both professionally and personally while getting priceless experience. Working for the UN, one should expect working in a team of international experts, competitive salaries, and great career opportunities. So, let's have a more detailed look at job types offered by the UN and clarify how to become a part of this powerful organization.

But the main question is “ how to get a job at the un ” without spending 10 years to achieve this dream ?

UN Career Jobs Opportunities

The issues the UN deals with are numerous, as well as jobs offered by this organization. Due to this, a person of almost any age and qualification can find something suitable. In fact, your perspectives are great, as if you will be lucky enough to get a UN job, you will have a chance to work in a team of the best professionals, all having one noble aim: to make our planet a better place to live. Besides, specialists for many positions are usually hired internationally, so it's better to be ready for relocations, which is an amazing chance to see the world. If you are ready to work in a team, client-oriented, ready to learn and improve your skills, and a good interlocutor, you are welcome to choose one of the jobs offered by the company. According to Gilles Sereni, the strength of the UN system lies in the diversity of the people working together to add to the well-being of the entire humanity. So, there are several staff categories for those looking for a job to get acquainted with, including

  • Professional and higher categories;
  • General Service and related categories;
  • National Professional Officers;
  • Field Service;
  • Senior Appointments.

Requirements for every of those differ greatly. For instance, specialists for higher and professional categories are usually hired nationally, and it is impossible to find a position in this category that doesn't require a degree, and at least some work experience.

Speaking about the second category, one can find secretarial, administrative, or different types of trade work there. Besides, a high school diploma and good physical condition are essential. A candidate should have several years of work experience in the field he/she has chosen. Specialists for this category are usually recruited locally.

Then comes the National Professional Officers. People are hired locally as well. It is necessary for a person to have an excellent knowledge of local culture, language, and national institutions. Child protection, human rights protection, medicine, and more - that's what you'll have to deal with choosing a job from this category. Work experience is also essential.

Specialists from the Field Service category are usually hired internationally. So, if you are striving to find a job in this category, you should understand that you'll have to be super mobile and relocate a lot. Minimum requirements for positions from this category include a High School diploma and work experience (for some jobs). For some positions, a candidate should have at least six years of work experience.

As you can see, your career here will fully depend on your decisions and effort. You will have a chance to choose between various career paths, including management, science, public information, administration, telecommunication technologies, security and safety, logistics, and so on.

How to Start the UN Career

If you love our planet and people and are eager to change the world for better, you will certainly find an ideal job for yourself in the UN. This organization is a huge employer , offering numerous career opportunities not only for experienced professionals but also for those who are just looking for a dream job. Competition is usually fierce, as there are often many candidates for the same position, which is proof that UN jobs are desirable and popular. Nevertheless, it's possible to become a UN worker. But be ready to prepare for it, as it may not be as easy as people eager to start a career in the UN usually expect. Now, let's have a look at the main steps you'll have to do to start the UN career .

  • Prepare . The best way to start is to browse the United Nations official website to get a better understanding of what you are offered. This may be super helpful for those who do not yet understand what they are looking for. On the website, you will have a chance to get acquainted with a list of job openings, areas, and qualifications required. Information is everything, so be prepared.
  • Choose the staff category . As we have already mentioned, there are several staff categories to choose from. So, the next step is choosing the category. You should take into account your skills and interests, as well as work experience (it's essential for some jobs).
  • Make sure you have enough experience and qualification for the position chosen . Understandably, each position has a set of requirements you should meet for your application to be considered. Sometimes candidates don't pay attention to the requirements relying on luck. It's completely wrong, as in this case people just waste their time applying. We'll discuss general requirements a little bit later.
  • Register an account . Having selected a job, you should proceed to the next step - registration. To register a personal account, you'll have to provide some personal information (like your date of birth, your name, email, etc). You'll also have to provide some information about your qualification. And the last step is to create a user name and a password.
  • Choose a job and apply. Think twice whether you meet all the requirements not to waste your time for nothing. You can apply for as many positions as you like. Instead using CV, you will need to use forms as UN p11 form (personal history form) .  The applying process is not a complicated one, you just have to follow the instructions.
  • Wait for an interview invitation . Having applied for a job (or several), all you have to do is wait. You will be able to check the status of your application in your account. Be attentive, as only those selected for an interview will be informed about the result.

There are several programs designed to help young people to find a career path in the UN. One of the most popular is the Young Professionals Programme (we'll discuss it a little bit later).

Main Requirements for Candidates

As we have previously mentioned, there are different applying requirements for UN positions. But there is a list of requirements that are the same for all the jobs offered by the UN. The first and most obvious one is fluency in several languages (or at least in one). To be able to apply for any of the UN job openings, an applicant should have a good knowledge of either English or French. If you are fluent in additional languages, it will be a huge plus for you and will certainly increase your winning chances.

The next requirement is education. To apply for a better position,  one should have at least a bachelor's degree or higher. If you want to get a lwer-level position, a high school diploma and several years of experience will be enough.

And last but not least - your experience. This factor is super important, especially if there are many candidates. It completely depends on the position you have selected, but those eager to get more well-paid positions should have a few years of work experience in the corresponding field. Actually, requirements for work experience are different, you may need from one to twelve years of work in the field or even more to get a job.

What is the Young Professionals Programme (YPP)? How to Apply?

This program is certainly the best choice for young people who want to get a job in one of the biggest and most influential in the world. Having selected this option, you will start your career as an international civil servant. So, how to become a participant in this program? First of all, you should check whether your country can participate, as some countries are not allowed. Then, browse the jobs available to select the one to suit your tastes and ambitions. The applying procedure is easy in the extreme. So, if you have found the position of your dream and completely sure you meet all the requirements, you simply have to stick to the procedure we have previously described. Another thing worth mentioning is that the application is not enough to become a participant. If selected, the company will inform you about it and invite you to pass the exam. Without this part, you won't be allowed to start working.

Speaking about general requirements, an applicant shouldn't be older than thirty-two. A university degree is also required. Similarly to other UN jobs, Young Professionals Programme requires fluency in English or French. There are often many people competing for the same position, so work experience may also be taken into account. So, use all your options to increase your chances of getting a job in the UN, as this company is the one doing a great job for all the people of our planet. Although it may not seem easy from the first sight, you will be rewarded with lots of knowledge and experience difficult to be found anywhere else.

UN Jobs FAQ

Getting into the UN may be challenging, so it's better to be fully aware of all your options and understand the potential problems you may face. The first step is research. Browse the official website to get acquainted with the company's ideology and its job openings. If you are sure you want to contribute to the well-being of humanity working in the UN, you are welcome to choose a position you like the most (or several) and apply. To do this, you'll have to go through the registration and provide some information about your qualification and some personal information. Make sure you meet all the requirements of the position chosen. If you are not experienced enough, you can select one of the internship programs offered by the UN.

There are several job networks in the UN, including economic and social development, peace and security, information systems and communication technology, management and operations support, safety and security, public information and external relations, conference management. There is a huge selection of jobs for the potential candidates of various experiences and qualifications, so your possibilities are plentiful. There are different categories of workers, such as field services workers, professionals, national professional officers, general service workers, and several others.

Salaries in the UN are competitive. In fact, the sum of money you'll get depends on several factors, such as your category, qualification, type of your contract, and your duty station. For some jobs (general services, national professional officers) people are hired locally, so the salary depends on it. Use our UN salary calculator to know your future sqlqry.  Choosing a position from professional and higher categories, you'll get from 37,000$ to 123,000$ and from 31,000$ to 90,000$ if you are planning to work in field services (depending on qualification).

Getting a job at the UN is certainly not an easy task. The competition is fierce, as there are usually many people eager to get the same position. It's better to immerse yourself into this adventure being prepared and ready for any outcome. Understandably, there are many people dreaming about working in a powerful international organization, but only the best candidates are chosen. All applications are carefully reviewed and chosen candidates are invited for an interview. It will be difficult, but we can make progress only by means of difficulties, so it's certainly worth trying.

Every UN job has a set of requirements, like age, work experience, etc. Language knowledge is another requirement that can influence your success. English, French, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Russian are the official UN languages, but usually, candidates are required to have a good command of either French or English. The more languages you know - the bigger your chances of getting a job of your dream. Besides, if you have good language skills, you can become a UN translator, interpreter, language instructor, or a teacher.

It depends on the position you'd like to get, as there are different education and work experience requirements. For some positions, a bachelor's (or higher) degree is required, while you can apply for the others having your High School diploma only.

Those looking for chances to start a successful career can do it even while studying in the university, as the UN offers several volunteer programs and internships for young people. For example, the UN Internship Programme makes it possible for students in the final year of a Bachelor program to get into the UN and understand the core principles of its work better. There is also a United Nations Volunteers Programme, which is active in approximately 80 countries nowadays. So, if you are a student and want to get new knowledge and skills, you are welcome to choose any of the UN programs for students.

The applying procedure is not complicated at all. So, the first thing you should do is visit the career.un.org website to get acquainted with the job openings currently available. So, select the area you like and have a look at those. If you already know what types of positions you are looking for, just use filters to make the search easier. Click the "Search" button and you will have all the jobs in front of your eyes. If you have already chosen a position you'd like to apply to, the next step is registration at inspira.un.org. On this website, you'll have to provide all the necessary details about your qualification (as well as your personal information), write a cover letter and voila - you are ready to apply. Just go back to the vacancy you have selected and click the "Apply" button.

Use the UN career Guide if you are in trouble, it actually helped more than a thousand of candidates to find the job of their dream in the UN. In our guide we offer opportunities for all countries : from France UN jobs to Somalia jobs . Last week Fred got a UN job in south Sudan thanks to our guide.

As a rule, it takes from two weeks to four months to go through the selection process. So, you'll have to be patient and wait for the e-mail informing you that you are selected for the next step (as a rule, it's a writing test). We have many written assessment test samples for organisations such UN, UNDP, WFP, and Unicef. Our UN career Guide provides you the best and most recent UN, WFP, Unicef and UNDP written test . Then comes the interview (by Skype or personally). After an interview, you'll have to wait for the final decision from 1 week to 1 month.

You should provide information about years of studying and the full names of educational institutions. Then comes a summary of your skills and proficiency. After this block of information comes professional experience, where you should try to highlight your most impressive achievements. World University Rankings 2024

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 include 1,906 universities across 108 countries and regions.

The table is based on our new WUR 3.0 methodology , which includes 18 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

This year’s ranking analysed more than 134 million citations across 16.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 68,402 scholars globally. Overall, we collected 411,789 datapoints from more than 2,673 institutions that submitted data.

Trusted worldwide by students, teachers, governments and industry experts, the 2024 league table reveals how the global higher education landscape is shifting.

View the World University Rankings 2024 methodology

The University of Oxford tops the ranking for the eighth year in a row, but others in the top five have seen shifts in their ranks. Stanford University moves up to second place, pushing Harvard University down to fourth.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) climbs up two places to third this year. The University of Cambridge slips to fifth place, after being in joint third place last year.

The highest new entry is Italy’s Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, ranked in the 301-350 bracket. However, the majority of the institutions joining the ranking for the first time this year are in Asia.

The US is the most-represented country overall, with 169 institutions, and also the most-represented in the top 200 (56). With 91 institutions, India is now the fourth most-represented nation, overtaking China (86).

Four countries enter the ranking for the first time – all of them in Europe. The addition of Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Armenia is in contrast to last year’s trend when all the new entrants were from Africa.

Stanford University leads the teaching pillar, while the universities of Oxford and Cambridge come top for research environment. The research quality pillar, which is the newly renamed citations pillar, sees MIT in first place.

The University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates scores highest in international outlook, while 28 institutions receive a top score of 100 for the industry pillar.

In addition to the 1,904 ranked institutions, a further 769 universities are listed with “reporter” status, meaning that they provided data but did not meet our eligibility criteria to receive a rank, and agreed to be displayed as a reporter in the final table.

Last Day of Application

China's young people are applying for public service jobs in record numbers, but experts warn it may further slow down the economy

People attend a job fair for university graduates at a gymnasium

Johnson Yang had ticked just about every box on the long list to achieve his dream career when he made the decision to walk away.

The 26-year-old Chinese student was in his final year of a postgraduate law degree at one of China's most prestigious universities.

In June last year, he secured an internship at a law firm in Shanghai, China's wealthiest city where many global top 500 companies reside.

But Yang soon realised the legal profession wasn't as glamorous as he expected — even as an intern, he was frequently rostered to work overtime, with little pay. It was stressful and tiring.

He also began to worry about whether he would be able to land a job in the competitive legal sector, alongside 11 million university graduates entering the job market.

In July — while Yang was still completing his internship in Shanghai — China recorded an unemployment rate of 21.3 per cent among those aged 16 to 24, before Beijing paused publishing its figures for the rest of 2023.

People attend a job fair for university graduates at a gymnasium.

The latest government data published in January showed an improvement, to 14.9 per cent. However, that figure doesn't take the student population into account, and many young people in rural areas are also excluded.

The tough situation prompted Yang to rethink his future.

"I want to consider other alternative career pathways," he said.

So, like 3 million other young people struggling to navigate China's declining economic prospects, Yang looked to government jobs, a career pathway that's also popular among young Australians for its financial stability.

But experts warn the shift from private to public sectors among China's youngest workers could come with consequences for the economy, while Australia's multi-billion-dollar higher education industry could reap the benefits.

The 'iron rice bowl' is no longer for life

In recent years, jobs in China's government and public sector have been described as "the iron rice bowl", meaning they are jobs for life.

The term was first used to refer to jobs in China's state-owned enterprises prior to the 1970s, at a time when the country's economy was still structured around the Communist model of government.

A man walks past a construction site and skyscrapers in Beijing.

During this time, state-owned enterprises were dominant and workers generally kept their jobs for life with stable incomes.

In the 1980s, in the wake of low productivity and a growing economic crisis, the Chinese Communist Party launched a reform, embracing market economy.

It trimmed down the number and size of the country's state-owned enterprises, while launching new policies to boost private sector and foreign investments.

The reforms laid the foundation for China's rapid economic growth, but also led to a huge unemployment wave among state-owned enterprise workers in the 1990s.

The term "iron rice bowl" grew to include jobs in government and public sector, as many people believed these were more stable and safer careers.

But with the rapid development of the corporate and private sectors, the new iron rice bowl no longer dominates China's economy.

Government data shows that in 2023, more than 90 per cent of China's corporations were privately owned. The sector hired more than 80 per cent of labourers in urban areas, including almost half of the university graduates.

The private sector contributed more than 50 per cent of taxes and 60 per cent of China's GDP.

Nevertheless, there has been a rise in Chinese university graduates applying for government jobs in the past four decades.

But it's not easy to get a foot in the door in the public sector.

The long road to becoming a public servant

In China, there are two main pathways for those who want to become a public servant: direct recruitment and exams.

Direct recruitments are only available for low-level governments and public institutions, so many young people tend to apply for public jobs through the exam system, which generally provides more future promotion opportunities.

People walk into the hall of an exam centre during China's annual National Public Servant Examination

Before they start studying for the public service exams, prospective workers must first apply to sit the test.

These exams test general education to around a Year 9 level, plus specialist university knowledge relevant to the position and department applicants are hoping to work in, such as accounting.

Applicants are also tested on political theories related to Xi Jinping's leadership of the Chinese Communist Party.

Despite the assessment level, the high demand for public service jobs — as many as 6,000 applicants for one job — means many young people commit to long-term preparation to achieve high scores in the exams.

Yang spent eight hours a day for four months revising before he sat the annual exam in November.

"Knowing how to answer the questions isn't enough, you also have to answer all of them at a fast pace," he said.

"There are lots of questions to answer, you have to complete one every 20 to 40 seconds."

As part of his preparation, Yang watched online lectures and did mock tests, while many applicants also choose to take specialist tutoring for the exams.

According to a report in 2020, the annual profit for public service exam tutoring reached $2.59 billion .

A pile of books.

Despite the drills and efforts, Yang didn't progress to the next round of public service exams.

"It's certainly not a good thing that so many young people look for jobs in the public sector," he said.

"I think all young people have their dreams and pursuits, but now everyone doesn't want to pursue what they dream of, there's definitely a deeper reason for it."

Yang believes the lack of confidence in China's economy has turned young people away from working in other sectors.

"Everyone is now trying to get into public services, because if we get in, then we at least don't need to worry about losing jobs five or 10 years later, or having a middle-age career crisis," he said.

China's economy may be at further risk

The rapid growth of applications to public service jobs is a result of China's economic slowdown since the pandemic, according to Yasheng Huang, an economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"That's a result of the policy choices that Chinese leadership has made: cracking down on the private sector during COVID; resorting to very strict controls of the population; [the] deterioration of relationship with the West; and the securitisation of policy," Professor Huang said.

Professor Huang also said the limitations of China's economic growth model, which focuses on real estate infrastructure investment rather than boosting average disposable income, has also resulted in fewer career choices for young people.

"In the past 45 years, the [public] service exam was popular, but it was competing with other things," he said.

"But now because the economy is growing very, very slowly, other [career] options are disappearing."

And that's a bad sign for China's worsening economy, said Professor Huang.

"I think China needs entrepreneurs and talented people to start new businesses and to contribute to broader economic growth," he said.

"Even the best-running government in the world does not create economic growth by itself. The contribution by the government to the economy is that the government creates a good business environment.

"But the actual creation of wealth, actual creation of technology, has to be done by people in the private sector."

Employees in yellow outfit work in a machine lab.

Professor Huang said while the rising interest in the public sector had brought more talent with a variety of skills into the system, it had also made governments larger, at a time when local governments needed to cut expenses.

Last October, China's Ministry of Finance stated that the debts of local governments exceeded $8.6 trillion, urging local governments to refinance.

Following the announcement, Chinese media reported some local governments from less developed regions were forced to scale down and lay off their staff.

Chinese youth want alternatives, with eyes on Australia

Since 2022, the high youth unemployment rate in China has seen many young people try to seek alternative careers, with some choosing to be "full-time children" , online influencers , or moving to the countryside to escape pressures in the cities .

At the same time, millions of university students have decided to push back their graduation by applying for postgraduate studies, hoping to delay their entrance to the labour market.

The two major trends of Chinese young people's career preferences — pursuing postgraduate study and seeking public service jobs — are also reshaping Australia's international education system, which relies heavily on Chinese students.

Last year, China loosened restrictions for graduates studying in foreign universities to apply for government jobs.

The move prompted a growing discussion among Chinese international students on social media about their new potential career options.

Posts about public service exams on Red

Henry Zhang, a 24-year-old studying mining in China, is preparing to sit the public service exams in the next few years, and he already received  postgraduate offers in mining from several Australian universities.

He believes his new international education experience could make him stand out when applying for public service jobs.

"International students have global vision and strong cross-cultural communication skills. They could help improve the overall quality of public workforces and governments better interact with the world," Zhang said.

Zhang feels that Australian universities have a "comprehensive" career support system for graduates, but need a better understanding of the situations that international graduates face when applying for public jobs in China.

Angela Lehmann, head of research at international education consultancy firm The Lygon Group, has also observed the growing trend, but believes there are other factors at play.

"We're seeing an increase in Chinese young people and students talking about mental health. This is something that prior to the pandemic wasn't talked about quite as openly," Dr Lehmann said.

She said in the past, many international students came to Australia with the hope of seeking a global career in private or foreign-invested corporations.

But Dr Lehmann believes the long working hours and mass layoffs as a result of the Chinese government's crackdown on the private technology sector have made many students rethink what they really want.

Two female graduates walk past Sydney University.

She also noticed an increase in Chinese students coming to Australia for the relaxed lifestyle, perhaps seeing studying abroad as an option to escape or delay their entrance to China's tough labour market.

"I think what universities in Australia could do to respond is [to] really engage with understanding the diversity within the Chinese international student cohort," Dr Lehmann said.

"The other thing is really just thinking about these new career paths and ambitions of students and ensuring that courses are tailored and made available to Chinese international students.

"And emphasising the advantages of an international education in Australia — one of which is that you can tailor your degree really to suit your shifting needs — which is something that's often not available in other countries such as China."

Where one door closes, another opens

For Johnson Yang, the highly competitive environment has pushed him to think about what he really wants for his career.

He was supposed to sit another public service exam over the weekend. But instead, he started a new internship at a law firm in Guangzhou, in southern China.

The past four months of preparing for public service exams made Yang realise his passion for law. He also recognised that tough competition for public service jobs could open up new opportunities in the private sector.

"There are so many people competing for public service jobs, meaning that many companies actually can't fill their vacancies at the moment. Now that good students all turn to the public sector, there are more options for others," he said.

He also had a suggestion to his peers.

"Don't just follow others' opinions when it comes to choosing your careers, especially when you have other options available to you. Maybe some jobs do start with a relatively lower salary, but you can still give it a go."

1 in 3 companies are ditching college degree requirements for salaried jobs

thumbnail

It's becoming easier to get a corporate job without a college degree : 1 in 3 companies say they no longer list educational requirements on their salaried job postings, according to Payscale's latest compensation best practices report .

Still, it's most common for companies, 41%, to say college degree requirements depend on the job, while a minority, 22%, say all of their jobs have a degree as a requirement. Payscale's analysis surveyed more than 5,700 business leaders and HR pros in late 2023.

As companies deprioritize college degree requirements, they're turning their attention to hiring candidates with the right skillsets, Ruth Thomas, a pay equity strategist with PayScale, said during a briefing with reporters.

The move could benefit the roughly 62% of U.S. workers who don't have a degree, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

While no-degree hiring doesn't apply to jobs that never required a degree, or professions like doctors or lawyers, it could have a big impact on hiring for middle-tier jobs like construction managers, sales supervisors, web developers, cybersecurity and IT help desk specialists, CNBC reports .

Walmart, the country's largest private employer, is one company that stands out for its broad efforts to remove education requirements on jobs. The company with 1.6 million employees said it was " rewriting job descriptions for our campus (headquarters) jobs to factor in the skills people possess, alongside any degrees they hold," in a  corporate blog post  in late September. "To be considered for the job, you can have a related college degree or possess the skills needed for the job, whether through previous experience or other forms of learning."

Other major employers, particularly in tech, have moved toward skills-based hiring in recent years, including Google, IBM, Tesla, GM and Accenture.

But removing education requirements doesn't automatically lead to more equitable hiring among people without degrees. Recent research from Burning Glass Institute and Harvard Business School shows candidates without degrees aren't getting as many good job offers as those with degrees.

"Unfortunately, what we found is for the most part, employers are still hiring the same people they were before," Matt Sigelman, president of the Burning Glass Institute, told CNBC .

"Many organizations still have a lot left to do in terms of categorizing skills in their organizations so that we can develop full end-to-end skills-based pay strategies," Thomas says.

Overall, business leaders say compensation is their top challenge of 2024, with half saying it's a high-priority investment area in the coming year, closely followed by recruitment and retention.
