Scholarships in Canada for international students

If you are an international student looking to study in canada, make sure you check out which scholarships are available to you from organisations and universities.

Scholarships in Canada for international students

Towering mountains, fresh air, azure lakes, abundant wildlife, great universities...Canada attracts thousands of international students every year and for good reason.

However, what isn’t so great is the amount that it costs to study there. Tuition fees are fairly high and in some big cities the cost of living can be quite pricey too. High costs of living can often put international students off studying abroad.

How To Find The Best Scholarships For You In Canada

On average, Canadian graduates with a bachelor’s degree  owe $28,000  in student debt. Although the government provides different student loan forgiveness programs, they aren’t readily available or enough to help graduates break free from steep loan burdens.

One of the best ways to avoid having too much student debt after graduation is to apply for post-secondary scholarships. In this article, we will go through various methods for finding scholarships in Canada and provide actionable tips for achieving success with your applications.

Understand Scholarship Deadlines

Imagine working for 4 hours on an essay, but when you go to hand it in, the submission portal has closed. Unfortunately, deadlines can sneak up on you as a scholarship applicant, which is a reality for many applicants.

Before you even start searching for scholarships to apply for, it’s essential to understand the significance of program deadlines. Most scholarships in Canada have a limited application period. I often suggest checking a scholarship’s deadline before verifying the program’s requirements.

This strategy can help you avoid wasting time on scholarships that no longer accept applications. Moreover, it lets you prioritize applying for programs with the earliest deadlines and those that will get you results the quickest.

Look At Your School’s Scholarship Offerings

One of the best starting points when seeking scholarships is your current or preferred school. Most post-secondary institutions in Canada offer scholarships for their students based on academic achievement, financial needs, or program of study.

An advantage of school-offered scholarship programs is lower competition. Compared to nationally or provincially offered scholarships, those provided within your school will typically have fewer applicants, which means you’ll have higher chances of being selected as a recipient.

The first step in applying for this type of scholarship is to check your school’s website or speak with your guidance counsellor. With either option, you’ll have the chance to determine the scholarships that apply to your current situation. Once you confirm your eligibility for a scholarship program, prepare the requirements and submit your papers before the deadline.

Check Online For Company Scholarship Offerings

Many corporations, both large and small, offer external scholarships to selected candidates each year as part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. To find out which companies have scholarships you are eligible for, regularly check online to get the latest updates.

There are multiple ways to find corporate scholarship programs online. One of them is to use scholarship search engines, which list scholarship programs from organizations, schools, and corporations alike.

Another method is to look for companies directly related to the program of study you’ve chosen to pursue. If you can’t find information about the scholarship programs of a particular corporation you’re interested in, consider contacting them directly by email or phone. Some companies don’t publicize their scholarships very much, despite offering them, so you need to be willing to put in that leg work to find the best options.

Utilize Your Network

School and external scholarship applications aren’t your only options when hunting scholarship programs. It can help to take advantage of your personal and professional network to see whether you’re eligible for affiliate scholarships.

Affiliated scholarship programs are exclusive to students with connections to certain companies or organizations. To find out about these opportunities, reach out to your family, friends, co-workers and organization members and ask whether they know of any affiliated scholarship opportunities for which you might be eligible.

Moreover, if you have the opportunity to do so, talk to some of the successful scholar alums from your school. They might still know some affiliate scholarship programs they were part of and that you may also be eligible for. Connecting with these alums through your school or via Linkedin can be an excellent way to find out more about scholarships and your school in general.

Tips To Win The Best Scholarships

Despite knowing the best methods to find scholarship opportunities, the journey to becoming a scholar may not be easy. Winning scholarships is similar to finding a suitable job; it takes time and effort, and your competition can be steep.

To help you excel in your scholarship applications, here are some tips I can offer as someone who obtained several scholarships myself. ●      Apply Early :  Cramming is no stranger to many students. However, if you want to win the best scholarships possible, make it a habit to apply early. Many scholarships have time-consuming requirements such as essays, in-person interviews, and tests. If you apply at the last minute, there is a chance you could be rejected by default because there’s not enough time for you to finish all the prerequisites.

●      Make Applying A Routine:  If you’re serious about winning scholarships, make sending applications a routine, not a one-time thing. Do not focus solely on your dream programs. The more applications you send, the higher your chances of getting financial aid for your studies.

Set aside a specific amount of time each week to prepare your scholarship applications and make this allocated time non-negotiable.

●      Reach Out To Your School Counselor:  School counsellors tend to be the most knowledgeable about financial aid for students. Reach out to them as early as possible to have a head start in the application process. School counsellors often recommend programs directly, based on your school records and current program. In other cases, they’ll introduce you to a financial aid expert who can walk you through the scholarship opportunities that are best suited for you.

●      Practice Your Essays:  Many scholarship applications require a self-written essay about your personal life, achievements, or goals. As early and as much as possible, hone your writing skills to have better chances at winning the hearts of the scholarship committee. Online courses are available for essay writing if you want to take formal lessons. There are also beneficial tools like Grammarly to help you know you’re not making any glaring errors in your applications. Alternatively, you can get assistance from your parents or teachers that are willing to review your essays.

●      Consider Small Scholarships:  Most students aim for scholarships that cover the entirety of their tuition fee. While there’s nothing wrong with seeking the big fish, this shouldn’t prevent you from considering smaller scholarship awards offered by your school, community, or companies. The best part about applying for smaller scholarship programs is their easier requirements and less competitive nature. This means you won’t need to prepare for your application extensively, and you have more chances of being chosen as the scholarship recipient.

●      Tailor Your Applications:  Avoid sending generic scholarship applications and essays. For every program you’re applying for, know the sponsor’s priorities and values, and tailor your submissions to present yourself in a way that fits their description of a worthy student. This strategy helps you stand out and give you more chances of being selected for the scholarship program.

●      Accept Rejections:  When applying for scholarships, learn to accept the rejections that come your way. Not winning one scholarship shouldn’t stop you from applying to other programs that can potentially win you not just one but several offers.

Treat each rejection as a stepping stone to further improve your application. If you don’t give up sending applications you’ve spent your heart, mind, and time preparing for, you’ll eventually land a scholarship that fits you.

Finding the best scholarships in Canada can feel like a challenging task. However, when equipped with the right methods and tips, they’re nothing students like you can’t achieve. Open your doors to scholarship programs from your school and the awards offered by private institutions and your connections. Remember, as long as you don’t compromise the quality of your applications, the more you apply, the higher your chances are of getting your much-awaited financial aid. Good luck with the next semester!

What are writing scholarships?

Writing scholarships are financial awards given to students based primarily on written work, though other factors are usually taken into consideration as well. Most writing scholarships involve a prompt or series of prompts to which applicants must respond. Some writing scholarships — especially those that award large amounts of money — require applicants to submit past writing samples, or even a full portfolio.

The good news is that, with so many writing scholarships to choose from, you don’t have to apply for any that are “out of your league.” Indeed, though most students have heard of writing scholarships, you may not realize just how many different varieties there are! Here are five of the most common types of writing scholarships, all of which you can find in this directory.

1. Personal essay scholarships

Personal essay scholarships involve writing on a topic related to your own experience. You’ll often see personal essay prompts like, “How have your experiences influenced your choice of major?” and “What are your career aspirations and how do you plan to achieve them?” Other prompts may ask you to write about a role model, a life-changing event, an aspect of your identity, etc. Suggested length is usually about 500-1,000 words, but varies depending on the level of detail requested and how many essay questions are provided.

Just about every scholarship these days has a personal essay component of some kind. This is because personal essay responses both demonstrate writing skills and give the judges a clear sense of each applicant’s goals. No one wants to throw away money on an aimless student — so if you’re applying for a personal essay scholarship, make sure to convey both your writing abilities and your ambitions in your work!

2. Critical essay scholarships

Critical essay scholarships are more in line with what students might consider  “academic” essays. The prompts typically ask applicants to analyze works of literature. However, unlike open-ended English class essays, most critical essay scholarships provide a very specific prompt (e.g. “Examine The Great Gatsby in the context of its World War II-era revival”).

Critical essay scholarships can also involve non-literary subject matter. Some may ask applicants to evaluate a historical event or figure; others may ask them to defend their stance on a political or legal issue. Though the line between critical and personal essays can sometimes blur, for the purposes of this directory, we define critical essays as those that use evidence from an external source to prove a point.

3. Short fiction scholarships

Short fiction scholarships include scholarships for short stories, one-act plays, poetry, and any other form of fiction that isn’t a novel or full-length script. Short fiction scholarships tend to be easier to find than long-form fiction scholarships, since most judging panels don’t have time to read more than a few thousand words per entry. Therefore, if you write fiction and you’re hoping to nab yourself a scholarship, this category is the way to go! (That said, if you’re a hardline novelist, some places will accept a sample chapter or two as short fiction entries.)

4. Journalism scholarships

Journalism scholarships are for students interested in pursuing a career in news, magazine, and/or online journalism. These scholarship applications almost always ask for writing samples to show the candidate’s interest. Depending on the organization, they may prefer topical news reports, informative articles, thinkpieces, or a mix. Some journalism scholarships provide a prompt and ask applicants to write a new article, but the focus is usually on samples. Speaking of which…

5. Portfolio scholarships

Portfolio scholarships are the most rigorous kind of writing scholarship, requiring a substantial body of work from each applicant — usually 5-10 pieces of writing, if not more. The upside is that awards for portfolio scholarships tend to be pretty sizable, and may even cover your entire tuition!

If you decide to apply to a portfolio scholarship, make sure you have several strong pieces of work in your oeuvre, and consider writing a few new pieces as well. What you shouldn’t do is rush through a dozen new pieces to throw together as a portfolio. If you don’t have samples at the ready from previous assignments or projects, you’ll be better off applying to a less intensive writing scholarship.

Why apply to writing scholarships?

Applying to writing scholarships is a huge undertaking, especially if you’re pursuing multiple scholarships at once. It can sometimes feel like the effort isn’t worth it, or that you have little chance of actually winning any awards. But in truth, submitting to writing scholarships is one of the best investments you can make in your education, your creative writing skills, and your professional life.

Scholarships for larger amounts do attract more applicants, but that doesn’t mean they’re impossible to land — only that you have to work a little harder to stand out. And you can definitely sway the odds in your favor by applying to lots of small scholarships ($500 or less) for which you’ll have fewer competitors. Remember that every little bit helps! For example, if you plan on taking out student loans, even a $500 scholarship could save you much more in interest down the line.

Another compelling reason to apply to writing scholarships is that oftentimes, you’ve already done the work, or the work required is minimal. For scholarships that require writing samples, you’ll simply submit what you’ve already written in the past — and even for scholarships with specific prompts, you rarely have to write more than a couple of pages. If you were seriously committed, you could apply to a scholarship every day, spending a single concentrated evening on each application.

Jumping off that thought, as English majors love to say: the more writing scholarships you apply for, the better a writer you’ll become. Writing tons of scholarship essays will make you a much more creative and efficient writer. Not only will this help with your personal writing projects, but it will also be invaluable to your education and even your career! Writing is a crucial skill for every major — you’ll always have to write papers and emails to professors, after all — and even if you don’t plan to pursue a writing-based job, you'll still need writing skills to polish your résumé.

Finally, remember that there’s a writing scholarship out there for everyone, no matter what your interests or intended field. This directory includes plenty of creative writing scholarships, yes; but there are also personal essay scholarships for future doctors, lawyers, salespeople, and so much more. You have nothing to lose by giving it a shot, so why not start searching for your dream writing scholarship today? Small Scholarships, Big Rewards

Less competition and other good reasons to apply for smaller awards..

Two stylishly-lit stacks of coins featuring cute translucent piggies standing atop them, remiding you that good things come in small packages, and small scholarships are absolutely worth your time to apply.

The big leagues

When you're applying for scholarships, you want to get the best bang for your buck. Or rather, the best bucks for your efforts. It can be time-consuming to find, research, and apply for award after award. No wonder so many students gravitate toward the TD Community Leadership and Loran Scholar awards — the chance at a single, huge payout.

Alas, those gigantic awards have a lot of competition. Some of the best and brightest across the country will apply and go through a rigorous selection process to win. Still, most of the thousands of applicants will go home empty-handed.

Smaller awards means less competition

Luckily, good things come in small packages. Lots of students turn up their noses at scholarships of "only" $500, like the STEM Lights Me Up Scholarship . But think: that $500 will cover half your books for the year, and there will be way less competition to win. When the price of admission is a short essay and application form, what have you got to lose? Add another $500 award — like, say, the Unlock your Future scholarship, and suddenly all your books are covered, and you've got $1,000 less in debt.

Shorter submissions mean more time to apply

Smaller scholarships typically have shorter application forms and less strict criteria for eligibility than something major like the Schulich Leader Scholarships , so chances are good that you'll not only qualify, but be able to apply quickly. (Of course, you'll have to put a little effort in. No one wants to receive a sloppy application.)

Because many of these applications are short, you'll likely have time to apply to a lot of them. Sure, the AIA Arthur Paulin Award seeks both a cover and a reference letter, but that's easy enough, and the Senator James Gladstone Memorial Scholarship only has a two-page form to fill out. Easy! The Rod 'Stu' Stuart Memorial Bursary looks only at your financial need and a statement of merit. Or how about the No Strings Attached Community Band award? $100 for a skilled performer on woodwind, brass, or percussion. That's the price of a textbook right there!

Don't let money go unclaimed

Did you know that millions of dollars in scholarship money goes unclaimed every year because students don't apply? Crazy, right? Who knows — for a given award, you might be the only applicant, and win by default! Of course, you'll never know unless you try. So don't be a scholarship snob: apply for smaller awards for a better chance at winning.

Now go out there and get that money, one dollar at a time!

Random Draw Scholarships

Random draw scholarships usually don’t have many requirements to enter. You might need to sign up, create an account or enter your personal information and that’s it. How to Find Scholarships in Canada

Whether you’re looking for no essay scholarships in Canada or broadening your search, there are many resources available and many great places to look for unknown scholarship opportunities. Here are a few of the places you can start looking for ways to fund your education:

1. Scholarship Search Engines

Scholarship search engines sites like Scholarships Canada and Yconic are great places to start looking for potential scholarships. Often, you can search databases for scholarships that are tailored for you, based on your location, what level of studies you are pursuing, what program or field of study you’re interested in, and even your experiences and extracurriculars for college .

2. Community Organizations and Professional Associations

Community organizations and professional organizations such as schools, sports, art associations and charities often have scholarships for Canadian students. Many of them may be unique scholarships in Canada that ask for other application materials other than an essay, such as reference letters or a resume detailing your volunteer experience or community service. It’s worth checking with the local chapters of national or provincial organizations to see what is available to you and what you’re eligible for.

3. Government and School Websites

Universities across Canada and all levels of government have extensive scholarships for students wanting to attend university or who want to get into grad school . While there are rare no essay scholarships offered at this level, these tend to be larger awards with more prizes up for grabs. Check for scholarships with specific eligibility that can weed out some of the competition.

4. Corporate Websites

Companies across Canada offer big scholarships every year. Some of them ask applicants to fill out a form, submit a photo or participate in a social media contest. While the competition pool is usually bigger for these scholarships, they are easy to apply for.

5. Financial Aid Offices

Financial aid offices at universities are usually looking to award scholarships based on financial merit, not on your essay writing skills. If you want to find no essay scholarships, applying for financial aid scholarships might work better, since you will just need to meet the criteria and demonstrate a financial need.

6. Local Organizations and Clubs

For more unique, small-scale scholarships, check with your local clubs and groups. These can be sports or arts clubs, religious or cultural associations, or community service and charitable organizations. While the amounts awarded might not be in the thousands of dollars, every little bit counts when it comes to funding your education, so it’s worth applying for those small scholarships, too.

Keep in mind that there are smaller scholarships out there with specific eligibility requirements. While not all of these are no essay required, they are worth looking into as they tend to have less competition and sometimes simpler application processes.

He’s been accepted to 122 colleges with $5.3 million in scholarships. His choice came down to his love of music

Helms Ategeka wants to be a pop star. But when he told his dad he planned to pursue a music degree after his graduation next month from high school, his father wasn’t exactly thrilled.

So last fall, the Oakland, California, teenager took a different approach: He started applying to colleges. More than 150 of them.

Before long, he got an acceptance letter. Then another. And another. The trickle became a flood until there were 122 of them — along with some $5.3 million in proposed grants and scholarship offers. (CNN has viewed the acceptance letters.)

His father says he’s proud of Helms’ 3.94 GPA and had hoped his son would pick a career with financial stability, like medicine or computer technology. Or maybe Helms might follow in his own footsteps as a mechanical engineering graduate from the University of California, Berkeley.

But as he watched the mountain of acceptance letters in his son’s room get bigger with every mail delivery, Chris Ategeka’s hope dimmed. The messages on the multicolored envelopes beckoned with undeniable enthusiasm. “You’re in!” one said. “Our family welcomes your family! read another.

“He’s so confident that music is what he wants to do, it would be a disservice for me to try to guide him otherwise … that’s why he applied to a gazillion colleges to prove a point,” Ategeka says. “I told him, ‘You want to be a musician? It takes a lot of hard work.’ And his reaction was, I’ll use my determination to do this to show you how hard I can work.”

But how does an 18-year-old begin narrowing down such a massive list of options? And so began a journey that came with tough lessons on change and compromise — for both father and son.

He had a key requirement for the colleges he applied to

Helms’ life revolves around music. At Head-Royce High School in Oakland he’s part of an a cappella group that meets every week to belt out covers of popular pop music. His room is stacked with CDs by Beyoncé, Prince and Bruno Mars. Before he starts college in the fall, he’s taking a summer trip to Peru with a choir to perform in churches and communities.

“I live for music. I spend most of my time either listening to music, making music or out there performing,” Helms says. “I feel the most alive and fulfilled when I’m doing something related to music.”

So when he started his college application journey, he had one key requirement: The school needed to have a strong music program.

He mostly used universities’ online portals for his applications, he says, which made it easier to copy and paste his information to multiple places. His father paid the application fee required by some universities. Helms spent many hours writing essays for different schools, although most were variations of the same personal story. In his essays, he highlighted his passion for music and his background as an immigrant.

A small group of schools, including Brown, Wesleyan and Colgate, rejected him or placed him on their waiting list.

But the much longer list of schools that said yes spans the country, from big state universities to smaller private colleges: Bard College, Drexel, Howard, Loyola Marymount, Sarah Lawrence College — and yes, UC Berkeley.

He moved to the US just before the pandemic shut down everything

Ategeka immigrated to the US from his homeland in Uganda in late 2000s to attend the University of California, Berkeley. He left Helms with his mother in the western Ugandan town of Fort Portal , where he lived until he joined his father in California five years ago.

Soon after Helms came to the US in 2019, the world largely shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. He attended his new school via Zoom and missed out on a big part of interacting with others and learning the nuances of American culture. As a result, he wasn’t sure his college applications would resonate or meet a lot of the requirements, he says.

“I gave it my all with the application process. I reached out to the schools to make sure that they’ve received my application and made sure I gave my essays my best shot. But I did not expect so many schools to say yes, so I was not prepared,” Helms says.

His modern drama teacher, Ricky Lapidus, is not surprised that Helms has received so many offers.

“Helms loves learning — he’s interested in other people as much as he is in grades,” says Lapidus, head of the Upper School at Head-Royce High School. “He is a deeply empathetic person and that’s how he approaches school — how do I learn more so I can understand others more? What makes him stand out for a college is a combination of his brains, sure, but also his joy and willingness to explore new things.”

He used his father’s words against him

Helms spent the past few months studying the websites and social media accounts of schools that accepted him.

He’s watched videos of their music programs on YouTube and TikTok to get a sense of where he fits in. And most importantly, he’s had candid conversations with his father about the realities of a career in music.

“As an immigrant parent, I was thinking, ‘How are you going to pay your bills?’ But he’s a driven kid … and he used my words against me,” Ategeka says.

Through this process, Ategeka says he realized he was viewing his son’s academic quest through what he describes as an “African immigrant mentality” that prioritizes certain lucrative careers as markers of success.

“I always tell him that he can be whatever he wants to be and can do anything he puts his mind to. And he was like, ‘Yeah, this is what I really want to do.’”

Ategeka says he’s slowly been embracing his son’s dream to study music and become a pop singer. He says he still worries about his future, because he knows how difficult it is to become famous enough to earn a living from your talent.

But he admires Helms’ determination and focus, as does his mother in Uganda. Chris Ategeka says his son proved he’s serious about a music career by getting accepted to so many colleges.

“ He is really highlighting the idea that he’s not a kid who is failing out of school or running away from home to live in the subway to make the music thing work,” Ategeka says.

“He’s sent the message that, ‘I know I’m smart. I got the grades. I can get into college. I can do whatever I want. But this is my passion, this is my drive, this is what I chose.”

His college choice has a connection to his dad

After months of research, Helms made his choice: He will stay nearby and study music at his dad’s alma mater, UC Berkeley. A spokesperson for Berkeley confirmed that he’s been accepted.

“I created a spreadsheet, and I wrote out the pros and the cons for each of the schools and really tried to weigh my priorities,” he says. “If I would like to be close to home, what kind of program each school has or doesn’t have, that kind of stuff.”

Watching social media videos of the schools’ concerts and other musical events revealed the quality and diversity of the programs offered, which helped in making his decision, he says. Videos of musical events at Berkeley had a certain joie de vivre, he says, which helped him see himself there. The school also has a wide variety of musical programs, including African music ensembles and a brass quintet.

As an immigrant, Helms is part of a growing demographic. Children born abroad or in the US to an immigrant parent accounted for 58% of the increase in the nation’s college enrollment between 2000 and 2018, a study by the Migration Policy Institute shows. “The face of US higher education is changing,” the study says. “Students are more likely to come from immigrant families than in the past.”

Helms’ new chapter comes at a precarious time for US colleges and universities as Berkeley and other schools grapple with the aftermath of pro-Palestinian student protests that have led to disruptions, arrests and debates about the limits of free speech.

But Ategeka says his son’s journey has reminded him to be open to new possibilities and ways of thinking. He believes Helms will find appropriate ways to be a part of difficult campus conversations.

“College is not about conforming to status quo … it is ground zero for training leaders who shape the future. It is in college that the young minds rethink the old and build the new for humanity and our planet,” he says.

Helms is excited to follow in his father’s footsteps at Berkeley, which has an admission rate of about 12% . Of the nearly 126,000 students who applied in fall of 2023, only about 15,000 were accepted.

But most importantly, he says, he’s looking forward to taking the next step toward being a professional musician.

Dear Boomers, the Student Protesters Are Not Idiots

An illustration showing a close-up of a suit jacket with a rainbow tie-dye tie and buttons. The first is a peace symbol, and the other three say “love,” “but also.” and “shut up and study.”

By Elizabeth Spiers

Ms. Spiers, a contributing Opinion writer, is a journalist and a digital media strategist.

Appearing last week on “Morning Joe,” Hillary Clinton lamented what she views as the ignorance of students protesting the war in Gaza. The host, Joe Scarborough, asked her about “the sort of radicalism that has mainstream students getting propaganda, whether it’s from their professors or from the Chinese Communist government through TikTok.” Ms. Clinton was happy to oblige. “I have had many conversations, as you have had, with a lot of young people over the last many months,” she said. “They don’t know very much at all about the history of the Middle East or frankly about history in many areas of the world, including in our own country.”

I’ve taught students at the college level for 12 years, most recently at New York University’s journalism school. I’ve also seen and heard the assumptions made about them by some of their elders — administrators, parents and others. So it’s no surprise now to hear protesters described as “ spoiled and entitled kids ” or delicate “ snowflakes ” who cower in their safe spaces and don’t believe in free speech . Billionaires like Ken Griffin , Bill Ackman and, of course, Donald Trump — as entitled as anyone — have been particularly vocal in their disdain, calling the students in one instance “whiny” and demanding that they be punished for protesting. Representative Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York, even suggested that TikTok should be banned in part because “you’re seeing how these kids are being manipulated by certain groups or entities or countries to foment hate on their behalf and really create a hostile environment here in the U.S.”

Whether they realize it or not, Ms. Clinton, Mr. Lawler and the rest are engaging in a moral panic about America’s youth that is part of a larger effort to discredit higher education in general. That effort includes fearmongering about diversity programs and critical race theory. But it starts with students.

In the current panic, the protesters are described as somehow both terribly fragile and such a threat to public safety that they need to be confronted by police officers in riot gear. To justify the police department’s excessive response at Columbia University, Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry showed Newsmax viewers a large chain and a book with the title “Terrorism” that had been recovered from one site of protest. The former was a common bike chain Columbia sells to students and the latter was part of Oxford University Press’s lovely “Very Short Introductions” series, which covers topics from animal behavior to Rousseau and black holes.

There are some obvious partisan factors at work here: Staunch support for Israel among Republicans , for instance, and the long-running right-wing insistence that elite universities are liberal indoctrination camps. But recent research reveals a significant generational divide as well. A recent YouGov poll found that 45 percent of people ages 45 to 64 strongly opposed the protests, as did 56 percent of people 65 and older. By comparison, only 12 percent of 18-to-29-year-olds strongly opposed them, and 21 percent of people ages 30 to 44.

It’s not just about Gaza; similar age gaps emerged in response to protests after the murder of George Floyd, too. Eighty-seven percent of adults ages 18 to 34 supported the protests in June 2020, according to Gallup , while only 54 percent of adults 65 and older did. And just 3 percent of the older group had participated in the protests, while 26 percent of the younger group had.

We know from research that adults under 40 are more likely to participate in a protest than adults over 40, and generally prefer informal political participation more than their older cohorts, who are more likely to participate by voting. But that doesn’t fully explain the outright hostility some have leveled at campus protesters.

High-profile public figures of all ideological stripes have varyingly called for the students to be kicked out of their institutions, made unemployable or sent to prison. They’ve floated implausible scenarios in which the protests turn deadly. Students brave enough to risk their financial aid and scholarships are derided as childish rather than principled. And though they are educated to participate in civic life, as soon as these students exercise their First Amendment rights, they are told that protecting private property is a more pressing public concern. It’s as though some older adults simply can’t wrap their heads around the idea that college students, who are old enough to marry, have families and risk their lives for their country, are capable of having well thought-out principles.

“They basically want students to shut up and study,” is how Robert Cohen, a scholar of 20th-century social protest, put it when I spoke to him this week. It doesn’t matter how virtuous the cause, he explained; older generations start with a bias against students. But protest is often the only way students have any voice at all in university matters. “People do not understand that university governance is fundamentally undemocratic,” Mr. Cohen said, noting that even students who have convinced universities to consider divestment have won, at best, the right to make their case to the board.

In my experience, the stereotypes about today’s students are often ludicrously far from reality. College students of this generation have far more knowledge about complex world events than mine or Ms. Clinton’s did, thanks to the availability of the internet and a 24/7 news cycle fire-hosed directly into their phones. Representative Lawler may be correct that some portion of that information comes from clips on TikTok, and social media can be misleading, but there’s no evidence that college students are more likely to be misled by TikTok than people Mr. Lawler’s age and older are likely to be misled by Facebook. In fact, research indicates that younger people are more savvy and skeptical about media, and more likely to triangulate among different sources to see if something is true.

They may also be more sensitive to the horrors of children being killed here and elsewhere because they grew up participating in active shooter drills and watching the aftermath of mass shootings on the news. They are less financially secure than generations prior, and less likely to believe that institutions will save them or reward them for loyalty and hard work . But they are not babies, and they are not oblivious or naïve. And their ideas and actions cannot be dismissed just because some bad actor — no mass movement is without them — does or says something stupid.

I’m somewhat sympathetic to those who find protests uncomfortable. They’re always disruptive, as they’re supposed to be. And big loud crowds make me nervous now in a way that they didn’t when I was 22 and a big loud crowd was fun and meant I was at a club with oontz-oontz-oontz music and 73 of my closest friends. I now prefer political participation that is less hard on the knees. But I am exhilarated to see students using protest for exactly the reasons it’s protected by the First Amendment. It allows them to stand up for their values, invest in what’s happening in the world and hold decision makers accountable, even if it means putting themselves at risk. And most compellingly, it’s getting the attention of the president and other lawmakers who can effect change far beyond the walls of any university campus.

The Impact of Professional Scholarship Essay Writing Services on Academic Success

I t’s hard to overestimate the usefulness of writing services for someone who needs a good essay for a scholarship application. At the same time, there are some concerns about the probable negative impact of writing services on academic success. Let’s consider both the potential negative and positive impact of a scholarship essay writing service to decide what’s stronger.

One of the most widespread concerns about the impact of essay writing services is the ethical side of use. Evidently, it is improper if people will provide someone’s work as their own. Even though such concern cannot be called groundless, it’s a matter of choice. Writing service is a tool, and it’s only the customer's choice how to use it. A person can buy a knife to cut fruits and vegetables or to take someone's life. This is not about the tool but about the ethics and decisions of the particular person who uses the tool.

Another concern is related to the dependency. When people overuse writing services and outsource their own tasks to other experts, it rather decreases their own skills that ought to be developed with the assignments. It’s once again about human conscience and ethics. In this context, it can be useful to compare writing services with coffee. Sometimes, this drink can be very useful to help you wake up or not fall asleep for longer. However, with excessive use, it can be harmful to health and be addictive. And, if you are regularly using coffee to wake yourself up or to stay awake, you probably have to reconsider your time management.

One more concern is about the money. Writing services obviously don’t provide their help for free. Hence, the frequent use of it can cause a financial burden for people who use such services. Thinking this way, one can assume that any type of purchase can cause a financial burden. Most writing services insist on price transparency and the absence of any hidden additional increase in the price. One can see the price before placing an order and deciding whether this money will harm the budget.

As you can see, although the concerns about writing services aren’t baseless, they’re more about the weakness of human nature than about the negative impact of writing services themselves. People who can act unethically will find their way with or without writing services. And if a person has trouble managing money it will be evident from the different aspects of life, not only the use of writing services. You can be careful using writing services, but not more careful than with anything else in life.

Except for the concerns considered above, writing services can also positively impact academic success when used properly. A person who needs to write a scholarship essay often faces the problem of procrastination and blank page syndrome. In such a case, help from a writing service can be incredibly useful to overcome the problems. A person can use the paper from the writing service as an example to follow or, in contrast, decide that everything must be written differently. Most importantly, one will start working on the scholarship essay instead of waiting for inspiration or being lost in anxiety.

  • The positive impact on mental health comes from the previous advantage. Applying for the scholarship is a stressful process. A person is concerned about all the papers that must be gathered and forms to be filled out in the proper way, about the future if the scholarship will be obtained, and about the development of the events if not. Writing services that provide personalized examples of scholarship essays can help reduce stress and anxiety and, hence, have at least a small positive impact on mental health.
  • Expert guidance can be crucial for a person who needs a scholarship. Yes, you can find free examples of scholarship essays on the web, but you might not be sure which is most suitable for your particular case. Writing services have professionals who often write scholarship essays and know their specifics. In addition, a personalized example is the most useful one to understand what and how you can write to succeed.
  • Time management is the last but not the least point in this list. Writing services have short deadlines of just a few hours, which allows a person to get a ready example on the same day it was ordered. This saves time that a person might spend reading and understanding the nuances of the scholarship essay. Instead of that, one can take this time for other no less essential papers or activities related to getting a scholarship.

Final words

As one can see, scholarship essay writing services can potentially negatively and positively impact academic success. Such services can be a powerful tool to save time, avoid stress, and get a well-written personalized example of a scholarship essay. However, as well as in the case of any tool, it must be used wisely and ethically.
