Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, one-page essay sample.

Hi guys! So, I'm working on some college essays and a few of them require a one-page essay. I'm a little stuck... Does anyone have any tips or examples of good one-page essay samples that I could take a look at? It would be super helpful!

Hi there! Writing a one-page essay can indeed be challenging, but I'm here to offer some advice to help you craft a powerful and memorable piece. These tips can help kickstart your creativity:

1. Choose a unique topic: Select a topic that genuinely interests you and provides insight into your character, values, or experiences. Try to focus on a specific moment, event, or realization rather than a broad topic. This narrow focus will allow you to dive deeper and explore the nuances of that particular aspect, rather than stretching yourself too thin - one page isn't that long, after all.

2. Be concise with your words: One-page essays require you to be concise. Make sure to choose your words carefully and only include relevant information. Every sentence should serve a purpose and contribute to your overall message.

3. Have a clear structure: Introduce your topic in the first paragraph and offer some context. In the body of your essay, develop your ideas with specific examples and anecdotes. Conclude by summarizing your main points and tying everything back to your core theme. This approach helps create a coherent and well-structured piece.

4. Show, don't tell: Allowing your readers to visualize and experience your story through vivid descriptions and imagery. It's crucial to avoid generic statements, and instead focus on precise details, anecdotes, or examples that reveal your personality and perspective.

5. Be authentic: A one-page essay isn't the place to impress colleges with highbrow vocabulary or complex ideas. Instead, strive to be genuine and honest, by expressing your thoughts in your own voice. Don't be afraid to show your vulnerabilities, to humanize yourself and help you stand out from other talented students.

6. Revise and edit: After you finish writing, take a break and revisit your essay with fresh eyes. Make necessary changes to improve clarity, coherence, and flow, and ensure that your essay is free of grammatical and punctuation errors.

7. Take advantage of CollegeVine's resources: While not specifically about one-page essays, CollegeVine's blog has a detailed post breaking down how to tackle the Common App personal statement, which usually ends up being about one page: https://blog.collegevine.com/how-to-write-the-common-application-essays/. Additionally, CollegeVine offers both a free peer essay review tool and paid reviews by expert college admissions advisors - either of these resources can provide you with a more objective set of eyes that gives you a clearer sense of how effectively you're using your limited space.

Overall, one-page essays can be impactful if you focus on a specific experience, use vivid and descriptive language, and maintain an authentic voice. Keep practicing and refining your essay until you feel confident in the final product. Good luck with your college applications!

Short Essay Samples

Below is a pdf link to personal statements and application essays representing strong efforts by students applying for both undergraduate and graduate opportunities. These ten essays have one thing in common: They were all written by students under the constraint of the essay being 1-2 pages due to the target program’s explicit instructions. In such circumstances, writers must attend carefully to the essay prompt (sometimes as simple as “Write a one-page summary of your reasons for wanting to pursue graduate study”) and recognize that evaluators tend to judge these essays on the same fundamental principles, as follows:

  • First, you are typically expected to provide a window into your personal motivations, offer a summary of your field, your research, or your background, set some long-term goals, and note specific interest in the program to which you are applying.
  • Second, you are expected to provide some personal detail and to communicate effectively and efficiently. Failure to do so can greatly limit your chances of acceptance.

Good writers accomplish these tasks by immediately establishing each paragraph’s topic and maintaining paragraph unity, by using concrete, personal examples to demonstrate their points, and by not prolonging the ending of the essay needlessly. Also, good writers study the target opportunity as carefully as they can, seeking to become an “insider,” perhaps even communicating with a professor they would like to work with at the target program, and tailoring the material accordingly so that evaluators can gauge the sincerity of their interest

Overview of Short Essay Samples

Geological sciences samples.

In the pdf link below, the first two one-page statements written by students in the geological sciences are interesting to compare to each other. Despite their different areas of research specialization within the same field, both writers demonstrate a good deal of scientific fluency and kinship with their target programs.

Geography Student Sample

The short essay by a geography student applying to an internship program opens with the writer admitting that she previously had a limited view of geography, then describing how a course changed her way of thinking so that she came to understand geography as a “balance of physical, social, and cultural studies.” Despite her limited experience, she shows that she has aspirations of joining the Peace Corps or obtaining a law degree, and her final paragraph links her interests directly to the internship program to which she is applying.

Materials Sciences Student Sample

For the sample from materials sciences, directed at an internal fellowship, the one-page essay has an especially difficult task: The writer must persuade those who already know him (and thus know both his strengths and limitations) that he is worthy of internal funds to help him continue his graduate education. He attempts this by first citing the specific goal of his research group, followed by a brief summary of the literature related to this topic, then ending with a summary of his own research and lab experience.

Teach for America Student Sample

The student applying for the Teach for America program, which recruits recent college graduates to teach for two years in underprivileged urban and rural public schools, knows that she must convince readers of her suitability to such a demanding commitment, and she has just two short essays with which to do so. She successfully achieves this through examples related to service mission work that she completed in Ecuador before entering college.

Neuroscience Student Sample

The sample essay by a neuroscience student opens with narrative technique, telling an affecting story about working in a lab at the University of Pittsburgh. Thus we are introduced to one of the motivating forces behind her interest in neuroscience. Later paragraphs cite three undergraduate research experiences and her interest in the linked sciences of disease: immunology, biochemistry, genetics, and pathology.

Medieval Literature Student Sample

This sample essay immerses us in detail about medieval literature throughout, eventually citing several Irish medieval manuscripts. With these examples and others, we are convinced that this student truly does see medieval literature as a “passion,” as she claims in her first sentence. Later, the writer repeatedly cites two professors and “mentors” whom she has already met, noting how they have shaped her highly specific academic goals, and tying her almost headlong approach directly to the National University of Ireland at Maynooth, where she will have flexibility in designing her own program.

Beinecke Scholarship Student Sample

The Beinecke Scholarship essay is written by a junior faced with stiff competition from a program that awards $34,000 towards senior year and graduate school. This student takes an interesting theme-based approach and projects forward toward graduate school with confidence. This writer’s sense of self-definition is particularly strong, and her personal story compelling. Having witnessed repeated instances of injustice in her own life, the writer describes in her final paragraphs how these experiences have led to her proposed senior thesis research and her goal of becoming a policy analyst for the government’s Department of Education.

Online Education Student Sample

Written during a height of US involvement in Iraq, this essay manages the intriguing challenge of how a member of the military can make an effective case for on-line graduate study. The obvious need here, especially for an Air Force pilot of seven years, is to keep the focus on academic interests rather than, say, battle successes and the number of missions flown. An additional challenge is to use military experience and vocabulary in a way that is not obscure nor off-putting to academic selection committee members. To address these challenges, this writer intertwines his literacy in matters both military and academic, keeping focus on applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), his chosen field of graduate study.

Engineer Applying to a Master’s Program Sample

This example shows that even for an engineer with years of experience in the field, the fundamentals of personal essay writing remain the same. This statement opens with the engineer describing a formative experience—visiting a meat packaging plant as a teenager—that influenced the writer to work in the health and safety field.  Now, as the writer prepares to advance his education while remaining a full-time safety engineer, he proves that he is capable by detailing examples that show his record of personal and professional success. Especially noteworthy is his partnering with a government agency to help protect workers from dust exposures, and he ties his extensive work experience directly to his goal of becoming a Certified Industrial Hygienist.

20 One-Pager Examples, Plus Advice for Using Them With Your Students

A single page of notes can be a real game-changer.

Collage of One-Pager Examples

One-pagers and Sketchnotes have become incredibly popular in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. Rather than just jotting down words on a page, students use one-pagers to visually represent key points and takeaways. They’re fun to create and have a real impact on memory and comprehension. Here’s how to use them, plus lots of terrific one-pager examples to inspire you and your students.

What Are One-Pagers?

The Hunger Games one-pager with illustrations and text

Source: Chomping at the Lit

One-pagers invite students to think deeply about a text and produce a single page to represent its most important aspects. They usually include some images, doodles, or other graphic elements, giving them the alternate name Sketchnotes . One-pagers are often full of color and may include more images than words, depending on the student. They’re most commonly used in ELA classrooms but can be helpful in other subjects too.

This note-taking concept was pioneered by AVID , a group that seeks to prepare all students for college. As one-pagers caught on, teachers found that students who used one-pagers made a deeper connection to the text and had better retention of key concepts. AVID’s guidelines encourage students to share their one-pagers with one another, helping to inspire learning in a variety of visual ways.

How To Get Started With One-Pagers

One pager examples using a variety of templates

Source: Spark Creativity

One problem teachers face when encouraging kids to use one-pagers is that some students don’t feel “artistic” enough. They may also not know where to start. When teaching kids to use Sketchnote one-pagers, provide more direction at first. Start by showing kids one-pager examples (see below). Ask what they notice about these Sketchnotes. Some characteristics they might note:

  • The information and images fill the whole page.
  • They’re colorful and full of illustrations.
  • The illustrations don’t need to be expert, they just help emphasize a connection.
  • Words are carefully chosen to highlight key concepts.

Some kids will take the idea and run with it right off the bat. Others will need a little more help. In this case, offering one-pager templates like these from Spark Creativity can really help.

You can also share these specific directions from AVID , which provide guidance on what to include on each page. Giving students a clear list of what to cover will increase confidence and free them up to be creative. For example, in English Language Arts, you might ask students to:

  • Sketch one visual symbol that represents the text’s main theme.
  • Write out two quotations that show the author’s style.
  • Include a sketch and a sentence representing the setting.
  • Make connections between the text and current events using sketches and text.
  • Examine one or two main characters and their development.
  • Identify three symbols through sketches or text.
  • Include a statement about one thing they connected with in the reading.

One-Pager Examples and Ideas

Here are some outstanding one-pager examples on a variety of texts and topics. Note the incredible array of styles, which you can use to remind kids that there’s no one right way to use Sketchnotes. Encourage them to be creative!

What Comes to Mind When You Hear about One-Page Writing?

As its name implies, it is something written on a single page. If you take it literally it would mean that you can only write something on a single page. But that does not really make sense because you can fold a paper many times and write a lot of different things on it, or you can use a smaller font to fit everything that you want to put in. It will still be a single sheet and no violation is done. It may sound as simple as its name implies, but seriously, writing a one-page sheet that is complete and efficient is not something you would want to look forward to. You may also like minutes writing samples and templates .

When writing using only one page, you will need to write only all the necessary and essential details needed. It may be about informational writing , application writing , or commentary writing . Sounds pretty easy, right? Of course, it’s better than having to submit a five-page research paper or essay. If you think about it, all the information in your resume are essential, but they won’t fit on a single page. Or your research paper ended up to be three pages long because everything is very important. This is where it gets difficult. How can you only write the important parts when everything is already important? It may seem impossible, but it has been done and that is through one-page writing.

One-page writing requires one to be very keen on details so that they will be able to distinguish which information should be on their work and which information just seems irrelevant. This method of writing is actually preferred over other methods because of the many advantages that it offers. It may seem difficult to write one at first, but with constant practice and a lot of determination, anyone will be able to write one. So, the next time you hear about one-page writing, what comes to your mind should be more than just a single sheet of paper. You may also check out essay writing samples and templates .

Why is One-Page Writing Preferred Over Other Methods of Writing?

There are many reasons why a lot of professionals prefer the one-page writing method and it is definitely not just because they want to make it difficult for a lot of people. If you must know, below is a list of the reasons why one-page writing is preferred over other methods of writing. You may also see business writing samples and templates .

1. It is straight to the point. Sometimes, in an effort to look and sound impressive in what we write, we tend to elaborate things to the point that we include unnecessary and unrelated information. Not all readers have the time to read these long passages, especially if they have a lot to read like application letters, resumes, and so on. One-page work allows one to directly get to the information that they need. You may also like letter writing samples and templates .

2. It only includes what is necessary and essential. You don’t have to tell a tale or give a detailed encounter of your experience. In one-page writing, you only write what is relevant and what makes sense and that is it.

3. It saves time. Because it is only a single page that writers and readers alike have to deal with, it is definitely a big time saver. You may also check out technical writing samples and templates .

4. One-page writing helps exercise one’s critical thinking skills. It is simply because it involves determining which among all the essential information are better than the rest that deserves a place in their one-page work. Trust me, it is never something easy. You may also see business report writing samples and templates .

5. It prevents the people from writing over exaggerated accounts of themselves or of other things.  There are just people to write exaggerated stuff and there are also those who hate reading them. One-page work helps eliminate these kinds of work and allows them to be read by the readers without feeling biased toward the writer.

How to Write a One-Page Article

It all may see difficult at first, but nothing is impossible with constant practice. There may be some part of your time used but there is definitely something worth it that you will gain. Instead of asking how difficult it is to write a one-page article, it is a whole lot better to ask how you can write one. If you really want to know, we have made a list of the steps below. You may also check out reflective writing samples and templates .

  • Determine what your article is going to be about. This is actually one of the first things you will need to do before you write any type of article or work.
  • Thoroughly research the topic you have selected. Use all the resources you can get your hands on, but make sure that they are reliable and are coming from a trusted source. You may also see speech writing samples and templates .
  • While doing your research, take note of the things that you think are important. Write as much important details as you can that you think can help form your article.
  • When you are done, review and study the information that you have gathered. This time, you need to select the most important and relevant information among the important information that you have gathered. You may highlight them or put them on a different sheet. This is the most difficult and time-consuming part of your work, but once you get through it, everything will be done in a breeze! You may also like book writing samples .
  • After your thorough selection, you will need to start writing a draft or outline of your article. Take note of the required word count if there is any.
  • After your draft or outline, proceed with preparing the sheet where you will write your article. Set the paper layout, size, and orientation; adjust the paper margin, font size, and font style. Follow the required format for your article. You may also check out application writing samples .
  • Now transfer your article to this final sheet making sure that it does not go beyond one page. If it goes beyond one page, don’t change the settings but change some parts of what you have written.
  • Check for spelling and grammar errors, as well as make the needed revisions if you must.
  • Once you are satisfied with your work, you can go ahead and save. You may also see summary writing samples and templates .

The steps above should help you and give you an idea of what should be done to write a one-page article or just about any other one-page work. You may also check out other writing topics we are offering on our website, like argumentative writing , notice writing , and persuasive writing .
