18 Best Ergonomic Office Chairs, According to Physical Therapists in 2022

By Emilia Benton and Sarah Madaus

Ergonomic office chairs on pink background

If you’ve searched for the best ergonomic office chairs or even tried a few in the past few years but still haven’t found one that perfectly meets your needs, we’re here to help. With lots of people still working from home permanently or following a hybrid approach, many have found time to carve out home offices. From standing desks to seat cushions to storage drawers , there is no shortage of office furniture options to consider. The most important part of your WFH setup, though, from a health perspective, is finding the right chair. Because it really is in your best interest to invest in an ergonomic office chair that can help you prevent prolonged neck and back pain . Thankfully, there are many affordable options out there that can check all of your boxes, helping you to be more comfortable while working from home .

What should you look for when buying ergonomic office chairs?

“You want a chair that definitely has an adjustable seat height; the ability to move up and down to accommodate people of different heights as well as different heights of desks,” Theresa Marko , PT, DPT, MS, a board-certified clinical specialist in orthopedic physical therapy in New York City, tells SELF.

The back of the chair should also be firm with lumbar support , Marko says, and the bottom cushion flat. Some chair cushions are tilted upward in the front, which is not ideal, she says, because they can make you tilt your pelvis backward and put pressure on your lumbar spine. Gaming chairs are popular options, but their upholstery and padding are often not built to last—and they take up a decent amount of real estate.

Visually, home office chairs tend to look very similar: Rolling, covered in mesh, made with faux leather or fabric upholstery, you get the idea. This part is based on your habits and preferences. Faux leather is easy to wipe clean, but fabric might feel warmer or more comfortable. The seat itself should have padding made with high-density foam so that it continues to feel comfortable even after years of use.

How should you adjust your office chair to fit your body?

As for your posture in the chair, Marko says the goal is always to be sitting upright with a straight back , instead of semi-reclining with the backrest tilted backward, or leaning forward, as both of these would put pressure on your shoulders and neck . She also notes that you should be pushed all the way up to your desk to prevent you from hunching forward, with your computer and mouse close by so that your elbows are bent to 90 degrees, right next to your torso.

Ideally, Weyrauch says, you want the top third of the computer monitor at or slightly below eye level, a position that she says reduces eye and neck strain.

Scooting your bottom all the way to the back of the chair against the backrest is also key, Marko says. “Otherwise you will be sitting on your sacrum and stressing your back.” The Cleveland Clinic also recommends keeping your feet flat on the floor, with your knees bent at right angles and even with or slightly higher than your hips. You may need to troubleshoot this if you’re tall and leggy and your knees are hitting the underside of your desk, but try your best to make this work. Ultimately, sitting upright, with your feet on the floor, hips squared, and no forward tilt means everything is in alignment.

And if your chair’s still a bit too high for your feet to lay flat on the floor, Stephanie Weyrauch , PT, DPT, MSCI, a physical therapist in Orange, Connecticut, and president of the American Physical Therapy Association’s Connecticut chapter, also recommends placing a stool under the feet to “decrease strain in the legs and improve posture .”

The best ergonomic office chairs

To help you refine your search for the best ergonomic office chair for your body (and workspace), we used the above recommendations to guide our shopping, asked team SELF, and had a crew of four physical therapists (including Marko and Weyrauch) share some of their top picks to encourage good posture , reduce tension in the lower back , and keep you comfortable as you sit for long hours at your desk.

Best Office Ergonomic Desk Chair

At just over $50, this office chair is one of the most affordable ones on this list. For a basic office chair, it has good support and is height adjustable, Marko says. Having armrests is also helpful to rest your elbows on so you don’t overuse your neck muscles from sitting all day . It has a mid-back height, which is satisfactory for anyone who doesn’t tend to sit all the way back against the chair—or who simply doesn’t need the upper back support.

AmazonBasics Leather-Padded Office Desk Chair

Marko also likes this leather-padded armchair (which I bought when I went freelance three years ago, and recommend) because she says it’s “solid, has a flat seat, goes up and down, has armrests, and is very cushiony.” She says it’s ideal for taller people since it has a deeper seat. “In general, taller people want a deeper chair and shorter people want a less deep chair.”

Gaiam Classic Balance Ball Chair

While exercise balls alone roll around the office, ball chairs are practical because they have a sturdy frame. “This chair is a great option for those who really want a good reminder to sit up straight,” adds Karena Wu, PT, DPT, a board-certified clinical specialist in orthopedic physical therapy and owner of ActiveCare Physical Therapy in New York City. “The dynamic surface of the ball reminds you to sit upright and activate your core at the same time. The ball can also separate from the base, which then makes the ball part of your exercise routine.” Though it's armless, it can work just fine if you’re resting your elbows or wrists on your desk.

Branch Ergonomic Chair

Branch Ergonomic Chair

The Branch Ergonomic model has eight points of adjustment, including an optional lumbar support rest and a high-weight capacity (300 lbs). “This ergonomic chair by Branch not only fits my minimalist work station (plus my super small apartment), but it’s also been a huge relief for my back," SELF senior commerce editor Jenifer Calle previously wrote . "I can sit for long periods of time and adjust the chair to my needs.” The chair’s back is made with two layers of breathable mesh and goes high enough to support your upper back and shoulders.

Flash Furniture Black Contemporary Adjustable Height Swivel Executive Chair

This chair has adjustable armrests to ensure that your elbows are maintained at right angles. This helps unload the upper trapezius muscle, which commonly causes neck pain , shoulder pain , and headaches , Weyrauch says. “The lumbar support on these chairs is optimal; the support should hit right above the top of the pelvic bones,” she adds.

Smugdesk High Back Mesh Office Chair

This office chair has a cushioned adjustable headrest, lumbar support, and chair cushion for the person who wants an all-around comfy chair. “The pillow on this would push your spine forward,” Marko says, which she notes might not work for everyone. Another plus is that it has cushioned armrests, which, as we mentioned, help elevate your arms so you don’t overstrain your neck muscles.

Staples Torrent Bonded Leather Manager Chair

Here’s a chair with a taller back for added back and neck support that Marko recommends for an average-size person. “This chair has adjustable armrests for personalized comfort and also has adjustable tilt options,” she adds.

Branch Verve Chair

Branch Verve Chair

Another option from Branch, its highest-end Verve model is made with a high-density foam cushion and a soft fabric back. It offers six points of adjustment, including a lumbar rest to support your spine. “This Branch chair is really comfortable, sturdy, and actually encourages me to sit straight during my work day," says Kenny Thapoung, SELF’s associate director of audience development and distribution. "The seat and armrests are adjustable, which are nice features I don’t typically see in office chairs. Sure, they’re not the chicest, and they’re a bit pricey, but if you have to sit for long periods of time, I highly recommend you look into it.” What's more, all Branch chairs have a seven-year warranty.

Alera Elusion Series Mesh High-Back Multifunction Chair

This office chair offers a mesh back for breathability, adjustable height, and incline options, plus a waterfall-edge seat that helps relieve pressure on your legs. It is a great budget office chair with a standard design, Wu says.

Kate Ayoub , PT, DPT, MPH, a physical therapist and certified ergonomics health coach in Washington, DC, also recommends it if you want a basic office chair for under $200. You can adjust the tilt of the chair (with the option to lock it in place) and also change the height of both the chair and the armrests, allowing you to get closer to your desk and keyboard.

Staples Carder Mesh Back Fabric Computer and Desk Chair

For a more petite person, Marko recommends this Staples chair that she notes has a supportive mesh back for added airflow, with adjustable arms, seat height, and tilt tension. “The seat depth on this one is only 16.3 inches in depth, and thus this chair would be better suited to a shorter person,” she says.

White Herman Miller ergonomic office chair on grey background

Herman Miller Mirra 2 Chair

Herman Miller

The blueprint for many modern ergonomic chairs, Herman Miller’s models have that price tag for a reason. Though it's not the infamous Aeron, this slightly more affordable chair has customizable seat depth, hip tilt, lumbar support, height, and more. “I generally do not like to sit at a desk or in a chair for too long, and this chair makes it much more bearable. I have short legs, a long torso, and a cranky neck and back, and while I have many other qualms about working from home (I get bored and distracted, for one), being physically comfortable is definitely not one of them,” says Hannah Pasternak, SELF’s associate special projects director. “It’s a steep price point, but Herman Miller is a mainstay brand for a reason—I anticipate the chair will last me a very long time. I’ve had it for two years already and it’s in perfect condition still.” For anyone who has a difficult time feeling comfortable sitting at a desk, this is a worthwhile investment.

Image may contain Furniture Chair and Cushion

Lorell Executive High-Back Mesh Chair

Here’s another mid-price high-back chair Ayoub likes that allows you to adjust the chair height and armrest. You have the option of adjusting the tilt tension too, customizing how much or how little you lean back. However, you can’t adjust the lumbar or seat depth, so you may need to supplement with a cushion if it doesn’t fit your dimensions, Ayoub says.

Image may contain Furniture Chair Cushion and Headrest

Tempur-Pedic TP9000 Mesh Task Chair

Marko and Weyrauch both recommended this Tempur-Pedic chair as a comfortable option that can adjust to whoever’s sitting in it. Marko likes its memory-foam bottom cushion that molds to your body for extended periods of sitting and its mesh back that’s “good for air flow but also has an enforced backing behind it to provide lumbar and thoracic support.” She also likes that you can adjust the arm width and height, seat height, and tilt tension all in one chair, which she notes is a rarity. And since the seat depth on this chair is 24.9 inches, she says it’s best suited for an average-to-tall person. Weyrauch also appreciates that the wheels on this chair and the seat allow for easy adjustment in relation to your monitor.

Design Within Reach Cosm Chair

Design Within Reach Cosm Chair

Design Within Reach

Here's an office chair that's totally customizable. You can choose from a low, mid, or high back; a fixed, adjustable, or leaf arm; various frame colors; and your choice of casters (for carpeting or hardwood floors). The key difference between this and others on the list is that it provides support without manual adjustments, thanks to a spine-looking responsive frame. “It sounds silly, but this office chair is my most prized possession," says SELF contributing writer Amy Marturana-Winderl. "As someone who works from home full-time, and who spent the last nine months doing so while pregnant, it has been an absolute lifesaver for my back. I used to get a really achy low back after sitting all day long, but that stopped almost entirely when I swapped my old chair for this one. It’s extremely pricey, but for me, it’s well worth it to keep me feeling comfortable and pain-free.”

Image may contain Cushion Furniture Chair and Headrest

Sihoo Ergonomics Office Chair

This chair has a lot of adjustability with the tilt feature and headrest, allowing you to lean back comfortably while working, Ayoub says. You can also adjust the lumbar support feature, so it supports your spine, as well as change the height of both the chair and the armrests, allowing you to get closer to your desk and keyboard.

HON Exposure Mesh High-Back Task Chair

Office Depot

This mesh chair that Ayoub recommends has built-in lumbar support and is super adjustable for a range of bodies: You can tweak the height and depth, as well as the armrest’s height and width. You can adjust the lumbar support too, so it meets the natural curve in your spine, Ayoub says, and the recline feature allows you to sit back, while still supported, in the chair when reading.

Image may contain Cushion Furniture Chair and Headrest

Gabrylly Ergonomic Office Chair

Leaning forward to reach your keyboard? This chair has flip-back armrests, allowing you to sit as close to your desk as possible, Ayoub says. It also has an adjustable sliding seat, which changes the seat depth to decrease pressure on the backs of your legs. Lastly, the headrest and tilt adjustments let you lean back comfortably while the chair supports you.

Varier Variable Balans Original Ergonomic Kneeling Chair

Varier Variable Balans Original Ergonomic Kneeling Chair

Moma Design Store

Designed in the 1970s by ergonomic seating expert Peter Opsvik, the Variable Balans is an innovative way to keep your spine fully erect without having a chair back. “Visually, I appreciate the design and how it easily this kneeling chair fits into the palette of my apartment decor without being an eyesore,” says SELF’s creative director Amber Venerable. “From a comfort and physical standpoint, I love how it keeps my posture upright all day like I’m being trained in ballet. Most of all, I love rocking back and in forth in it. It’s weirdly soothing.” However, these kneeling chairs are not built for all body types in mind. After prolonged sitting, it’s possible to feel pressure in your shins, which is not ideal for folks with larger bodies. It might be ideal for folks who get up often during the workday or who take breaks standing with a standing desk.

Dimensions: 38–42"H x 25"W x 24"D

Materials: Double-woven nylon mesh, high-density foam cushion, anodized aluminum base

Weight Capacity: 275 lbs.

Frame colors: Black or white

Seat colors: Black, pebble, sand, graphite, light blue, poppy, and Baltic blue

Warranty: 7 years

Adjustability:

  • adjustable height ✔
  • adjustable armrests ✔
  • adjustable headrest ✔
  • adjustable seat ✔
  • back tilt ✔

My experience: This mesh office chair looks as good as it feels. Using synchronous tilt and adjustable lumbar support, it elicits an ahhhhh every time I sit down. The standard-size chair has a slim back that keeps it from being bulky and still provides ergonomic support. The mesh weave is breathable, and the seat cushion is made of high-density foam for a comfortable experience, even over long periods of time. The chair also has seven adjustment options, including seat pan depth, lumbar, and tilt, so it’s easy to find the right angle. The chair is also a good value for the money.

What we really liked:

  • Supportive and comfortable: Breathable mesh back and comfy seat cushion
  • All parts can be adjusted to find just the right seat height, depth, and tilt level
  • Plenty of color choices

What you should keep in mind:

  • The headrest is a separate purchase

Branch Verve Chair

Branch Furniture

Dimensions: 41"H x 27"W x 27"D

Materials: 3D knit, foam, and aluminum

Colors: Coral, lunar, mist, mint, cobalt, and galaxy

  • seat height and depth adjustable ✔
  • adjustable armrest height ✔
  • adjustable lumbar height ✔
  • tilt and tilt tension ✔

My experience: There’s already a Branch chair on the list; however, the Branch Verve Chair is a newer and sportier model. As a general practice, the armrests on ergonomic office chairs tend to be bulky, and the Branch Verve Chair immediately stands out because of the versatile armrest design, which gives it a futuristic look. I can also adjust the height of the softly-padded armrests, the seat depth, the tilt, and the tilt tension. Plus I can adjust the padded lumbar support on the chair’s V-shaped suspended back for the most comfortable level of spine support. (If you struggle to find a chair that fits you just right, you’ll love all of these customization options.) The chair back is covered with 3D knit, which allows air to flow through it and keeps me cool. The Branch Verse is available in Coral, Galaxy, and Mist.

  • Sitting for long periods of time is easy thanks to the v-shaped chair design provides extra lumbar support
  • 3D knit back is breathable and supports posture
  • Sporty look and several color choices
  • No headrest

Seat colors: Black, white, brown, and gray

Warranty: 2 years

My experience: Though this chair is pretty simple in design, I had a hard time assembling it because the manual didn’t have any written instructions—just step-by-step visual instructions. I was able to eventually figure it out without making any mistakes, so I don’t think the $85 assembly fee would have been worth it, especially since that’s almost half the cost of the chair.

The chair immediately fit perfectly into my room. I like that it’s ergonomic, functional, and supportive yet not too bulky or large like many desk chairs tend to be. I like that this chair is simple, sleek, and monochrome with its black metal frame and black faux leather upholstery. Its square seat, light frame, and minimalist design make it cohesive with the rest of my room, unlike many desk chairs I’ve used that were clunky and lacked aesthetic appeal.

To me, this chair walks a fine line between decorative desk chair and a functional desk chair intended for daily use. Its contoured back, foam filling seat, and padded armrests offer lumbar support and comfort, but after sitting in it for a few long hours, it feels a bit rigid and hard.

  • The durable, soft, and high-quality faux leather looks real while still being animal-friendly
  • I appreciate how lightweight and simple the chair is—it’s hassle-free and overall easy to assemble without detailed instructions
  • The 360-degree swivel that I can reach all around my room without getting up (it’s also just fun to twirl around sometimes, but maybe that’s just me)
  • The back support feels thin and compromised, so if I were working from home full time or wanted to invest in a more comfortable chair, I’d probably choose one with more intentional lumbar support
  • The seat could also use a bit more cushioning, it feels more like a dining chair after sitting it for many hours
  • Though the chair is simple enough to assemble without detailed instructions, I would’ve preferred having a written manual instead of just visuals

  • fully moveable footstool with brakes ✔

My experience:

If anything was designed to go viral on TikTok, it’s the Pipersong Meditation Chair , and from the moment this bisexual saw it she needed to try it for herself. Whether you’re a creative sitter or just someone who tends to fidget, having the option to change your position to pretty much anything that feels comfortable is a game changer. Truthfully, the only downside is its size—if you’re looking to bring this chair into your office, take accurate measurements. It’s not a small chair by any means, and if you have a compact desk or sitting area, you’ll likely find that the wide-swiveling footstool is a bit of a challenge. But assuming you’ve done your due diligence, the Pipersong Meditation Chair is an excellent comfort option for WFH, whether you’re bisexual or not. ( Read Elise’s full review of the Pipersong chair here ).

  • Versatility: You can sit forward, backward, sideways, or whichever other way you want
  • High-density foam padding for maximum comfort
  • Incredibly sturdy and smooth casters
  • Easy to assemble
  • Size—might not be suitable for smaller spaces

Best High-End: Asari Chair by Herman Miller

homeworker ergonomic chair

Asari Chair by Herman Miller, Mid Back

Herman Miller

Tester: Audrey Lee, commerce editor

Dimensions: 37⅞"H x 29⅞"W x 29⅞"D

Materials: Powder-coated aluminum, dual-density foam, stow leather upholstery

Weight Capacity: 350 lbs.

Colors: Raven (black), jettison (blue), Etruscan (coral), clarion (yellow), submerge (teal), knight (dark gray), bulb (light gray), and antler (medium gray)

Warranty: 12 years

My experience: Designed by Tokyo-based designer Naoto Fukasawa (whose credentials include B&B Italia, Boffi, Issey Miyake, and Samsung), the Asari chair brings together comfort, functionality, and style. Glamorous but understated, this office chair exudes quiet luxury. Focusing on the design, the subtle curves and soft edges make the chair’s clam shell inspiration apparent. The backrest naturally tilts out slightly so it doesn’t feel like your back is against a board and the stow leather is a luxurious touch to an already luxurious seat.

There’s no assembly required, so as soon as you adjust the height lever to your preference it’s good to go. With a high price tag comes high expectations, but the Asari chair has elevated what a traditional office chair can be. I really appreciated the attention to detail, from the smooth chair glides and soft leather to the amount of foam fill in the seat and backrest that make it a treat to sit down and work. And after working from home on the chair for several weeks, it’s gotten even better. The chair has noticeably softened in a delightful way that’s ultra-accommodating to my dimensions without feeling too sunken in or too stiff. I find a lot of leather office chairs are harsh or overly masculine, but the Asari’s look is unparalleled. I’d absolutely recommend this chair to anyone looking to splurge for their home office. From physical appearance to practical use, it scores 10s across the board for me.

  • Major points for how customizable the design is—available in leather and cloth as well as eight different colors
  • Super supportive—I got the mid back but I imagine having the full back with a headrest is even more luxurious
  • Smooth delivery and no set up
  • Though not an issue for me, the armrests aren’t adjustable
  • More of a buyer beware note—I imagine it’d be on the harder side to get stains out of this leather, so I’m extra careful if I’m eating at my desk

Steelcase Karman Office Chair

homeworker ergonomic chair

Dimensions: 39.1–43.5"H x 26.1"W x 26.1"D

Materials: Plastic frame and legs, textile mesh seat and back

Colors: Peacock (teal and white), seagull (beige and matte brass), black intermix, red/blue intermix, and Baltic intermix

My experience: The first time you sit on the Karman chair you can feel your weight settle in—it’s a little like floating on air. Assembly was quick and easy, all I needed to do was fit the chair onto the wheeled base and adjust the height and armrests to my preferences. This chair is the definition of ergonomic—the mesh weave back rest melds comfortably against the spine without feeling unsteady and the overall design feels extremely durable.

The same mesh weave technology is used for the seat—sitting on it, with the underlying cushion, is comfortable, if slightly hard. The armrest pads slide back and forth and can pivot to make adjustments inwards or outwards, plus the armrest height is adjustable with a button located on the underside. Height adjustments are easy with a lever under the seat and there’s even a knob for making back tension adjustments. All this to say, everything is very intuitive and easy to use. After several full workdays of using this chair, I felt noticeable relief in places where I usually get aches on my back and hips. After a few weeks, most of my aches were basically gone.

  • The breathable mesh material feels comfortable whether I’m wearing pants or shorts
  • Easy setup and straightforward instructions
  • Very easy to get comfortable—a great option for those prone to back pain or find it uncomfortable to sit for long stretches of time
  • I wish the seat was just a touch softer
  • The back tension function could use some fine-tuning—the setting where you can’t lean back in the chair and the next one, where you can, feels like a jump, so an in between would be nice in my opinion.
  • Not an issue I had personally, but it would be great to have more armrests’ lateral movement for wider body types

Herman Miller Aeron Chair

homeworker ergonomic chair

Tester: Zoë Sessums, senior digital design editor

Dimensions: 38½"H x 25¾"W x 16"D

Materials: Aluminum frame and base; 8Z pellicle elastomeric suspension seat and backrest

Weight Capacity: 300–350 lbs. (depending on model size)

Base colors: Satin aluminum, polished aluminum, and onyx ultra matte

Frame colors: Graphite, mineral, and black

My experience: There is a reason the Aeron is Herman Miller’s most beloved and recognized office chair. The iconic chair is truly supportive and gives you every bit of adjustment to sit in an ideal way. I was able to go through a virtual fitting with an ergonomic expert at Herman Miller, who walked me through all the adjustable features, though the site’s gallery is very informative if you can’t try out a chair first. Once the chair was delivered—no assembly required—I understood the power of the patented PostureFit SL back support, which allows for chest open, shoulders back, and pelvis tilted slightly forward. This chair will save your body. After sitting in this chair it’s easy to see why people invest in supreme desk setups. It isn’t necessarily the most chic piece of furniture, but your entire body will thank you, so in that case I would recommend the Aeron chair again and again.

  • So many adjustable elements for a perfect fit
  • Ease of setup
  • Reliability

Zeph Chair by Herman Miller

homeworker ergonomic chair

Zeph Multipurpose Armchair

Design Within Reach

Tester: Lila Allen, AD Pro senior editor

Dimensions: 34⅞"H 24¼"W 19⅛"D

Materials: Polymer shell, optional 3D-knit fabric made from 50% recycled fibers

Shell colors: Alpine, black, carbon, cocoa, glacier, olive, and nightfall

Seat colors: Alpine, black, carbon, cocoa, glacier, olive, nightfall, tea rose, mustard seed, and blaze

Adjustability :

My experience: If you gave a shell chair superpowers, it might look something like the Zeph. Like other Herman Miller office chairs, this seat has a wheeled base and is height-adjustable. (The adjustment lever is super sleek, too—a fun detail for the design nerds among us.) If you scooch or lean while you work, the Zeph will move right along with you. I tested a version with integrated arms, but an armless version is also available. And best of all, there are plenty of ways to make the chair fit your style: In addition to eight different body color options, Herman Miller offers a 3D-knit, slip-on seat pad in 20 shades. (A unibody cover is on the way, too.) A fraction the price of an Aeron, Zeph is the gateway drug of performance seating.

What we really liked :

  • Sleek appearance that can be changed up by swapping in a different seat pad
  • Well-designed details, like handle hardware
  • Very comfortable!
  • 12-year warranty
  • The cover was a bit hard to pop on and off
  • No high-back option—which was fine for me, but may not work for some others
  • Arm rests are not adjustable

Best Budget: Flexispot OC3B Chair

Flexispot OC3B Chair

Note: Formerly called the Flexispot Soutien

Tester : Terri Williams, contributor

Dimensions: 51.9"H x 25.2"W x 21.2"D

Materials: Mesh, nylon, metal

Weight Capacity: 220 lbs.

Colors: Gray, blue, and black

Warranty: 1 year

  • adjustable backrest ✔
  • adjustable arms ✔

My experience: If you want a good office chair at an economical price, the Flexispot OC3B Chair is the best of both worlds. The entire chair (back, seat, headrest) is made of breathable mesh, which contributes to air circulation. Although my preference is a leather chair, I found the Flexispot to be quite comfortable, even when sitting for a long time. Also, since it’s a see-through mesh, the chair doesn’t take up a lot of visual space. The chair can tilt up to 45 degrees, and the height of the seat and armrests can also be adjusted. There’s also a nifty clothes hanger on the back of the chair.

  • Budget-friendly
  • Mesh throughout, which makes it a breathable chair that won’t trap heat
  • Several adjustment points and even includes a clothes hanger on the back to keep a jacket or throw blanket close by
  • Lower weight limit than many other chairs

Autonomous ErgoChair Pro

homeworker ergonomic chair

Dimensions: 46–50"H x 29"W x 29"D

Materials: Polyester fabric with molded foam and nylon plastic

Weight Capacity: 300 lbs.

Colors: All black, black and white, evergreen, red apple, and baby blue

My experience: The ErgoChairPro is such a comfortable office chair that I think I could fall asleep in it. My favorite feature is the synchro-tilt that allows me to tilt way back (up to 22 degrees) when I’m taking a break—and I can even lock in my five favorite recline positions, so the chair can remember them. The adjustable headrest is also a nice touch when reclining or just leaning back. The chair has a weight capacity of 300 pounds, and almost everything on it is adjustable. In addition to the back tilt tension, I can also adjust the seat tilt. Plus the chair’s height can adjust from 18 to 20 inches, and the seat’s depth can be adjusted as well. I can adjust the height of the armrest from 26.7 inches to 32.2 inches, and can also move the armrests in and out (there’s the option to take them completely off as well). The ErgoChair Pro is made of polyester fabric, molded foam, and has a nylon plastic frame. Seen here in a bright blue, it’s also available in apple red and lime green, as well as tried-and-true classics like black, white, and gray.

  • Keeps posture correct, even when reclining; adjustable headrest cushions the head and neck
  • Supportive lumbar cushion and breathable woven mesh
  • Several color choices
  • Plastic parts look rather cheap

Humanscale Freedom Headrest Chair

Pottery Barn

Dimensions: 48.2–53"H x 26.75"W x 17.40–19.85"D

Materials: Corvara leather, technogel cushions, polished aluminum

Weight Capacity: 400 lbs.

Colors: Black, graphite, balsam, driftwood, navy, nimbus, and granite

Warranty: 15 years

My experience: Out of all the office chairs I've tested, this is my favorite. I would wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend it. What makes this chair so unique is that it automatically adjusts to fit my body without the need for manual controls. For example, the chair's armrests and articulating headrest move when I move. The chair also has a self-adjusting recline and pivoting backrest, in addition to synchronous armrests that I can pull up when I want to use them and merely push down when they’re not needed. Honestly, the high-back chair is comfortable enough to sleep in—it's so comfortable that it probably causes me to work too long. In addition, the chair is fully assembled, so there’s nothing that needs to be put together. It’s available in eight fabric choices, including black, gray, pumpkin, red, navy, Balsam green, and Thalo blue (pictured).

  • Luxurious leather
  • Automatically pivoting backrest and armrest
  • Contoured cushions with waterfall edge
  • It’s pretty expensive

Vari Task Desk Chair

Vari Task Chair

Dimensions: 38.6–43.2"H x 25.5"W x 20"D

Materials: Mesh, foam, metal

Colors: Black

Warranty: 5 years

  • adjustable back ✔
  • adjustable tilt ✔

My experience: I would recommend the Vari Task Chair for anyone looking for a comfortable office chair. Vari's entire lineup is full of outstanding office chairs (and some of the best standing desks ), and this chair continues the tradition. This chair is ridiculously comfortable—it has a super thick foam seat and highly breathable back with great airflow. The backrest provides lumbar support and pivots. I like that I can also create the maximum level of comfort: It’s got an adjustable tilt mechanism, plus adjustable armrests and adjustable seat height—and all of this adjustability and customization really makes a difference when you’re sitting at your workspace for long periods of time. Pair this chair with good posture and you’ll be golden.

  • Thick seat cushion for maximum comfort
  • Pivoting ergonomic backrest
  • Multiple adjustments points
  • Headrest model is more expensive

Laura Soho Pro Soft Pad Management Chair

homeworker ergonomic chair

Tester: Nick Mafi, senior digital features editor

Dimensions: 25"H x 19"W x 17"D

Materials: Steel and vegan leather

My experience: After the order for my Soho Pro Soft Pad Management Chair was placed, it only took a few days for the delivery to arrive at my apartment. After unboxing it, I was pleasantly surprised by the ease in which the chair was put together (so much so that I thought I must’ve been doing something wrong). What’s more, after putting it together (it literally took five minutes and most of that was due to removing the protective wrapping paper), the chair itself proved to be as stylish as advertised on my computer screen. The lumbar support and material feel are the two most defining features of this chair, both of which go a long way in terms of comfort after several hours behind a laptop. Simply put, this chair is everything that ends in an exclamation point.

  • The lumbar support in the back
  • The wheels move easily and the chair feels sturdy
  • The chair sometimes gets stuck in the locked position without warning, meaning you don’t realize when it’s locked—you try to lean back but can’t move

Article Svelti Office Chair

homeworker ergonomic chair

Svelti Pure White Office Chair

Tester: Alice Roth, AD senior video director

Dimensions: 35.5"H x 24"W x 24"D

Materials: Molded polypropylene, powder-coated metal, rubber castors

Weight Capacity: 225 lbs.

Adjustability: Not adjustable

My experience: Assembly-wise, it was simple after some initial head-scratching with the instructions. I did Google “Svelti chair casters” but realized I needed to use my meager upper body strength to push the wheels into the chair legs. Everything else was straightforward, so I’m assuming this assembly blip was more of a me-problem than an Article-problem. (None of the reviews mention assembly confusion.)

The easy-to-clean polypropylene is very nice for someone who is prone to spills. Ergonomics are the main feature this chair is lacking. There is no adjustable seat height, which is essential for a desk setup with proper posture. (According to OSHA , you want your feet flat on the floor and your elbows bent at 90 degrees.) If I was to change anything, I would include an adjustable seat.

There’s also no cushion. I’m not sure this makes a difference, except on very hot days when I find myself peeling my legs off the chair (the answer for this could just be wearing pants during the workday, like an adult). I should note, Article sells a seat cushion separately, but it is about the same price as the chair itself.

  • The minimalist aesthetic
  • The easy-to-clean material
  • The lack of armrests (stows easily)
  • Limited seat adjustability
  • Clearer assembly instructions
  • Lack of ergonomics and no lumbar support = not a great option for perpetual WFH

X-Chair X-Basic Task Chair

homeworker ergonomic chair

Tester: India Roby, contributor

Dimensions: 46.5"H x 26.5"W x x 21.5"D

Materials: Polyester, polyester blend, foam, plastic

Weight Capacity: 240 lbs.

My experience: After lugging in the package from outside my door, I found myself lost during the assembly process, especially when it came to the headrest (my most anticipated part of the experience). Though flipping through the pages for roughly an hour, I only received vague instructions that said “See further instructions” with…no further instructions in sight.

With the chair ready for use, my first order of business was to test its adjustable features, something I didn’t have previously. The basic height-adjusting features are found in the seat, armrests, headrest, and back (meaning no automation involved), with the most useful ones being the headrest and armrests. Turns out, I prefer to work leaning back as far as possible, almost like what a comfortable lounge chair would feel like, and what my bed doesn’t do. The X-Chair doesn’t give much leeway to lean back, but it enforces better posture. It’s a win for my back and my medical bill. I’ve tested the X-Chair every day for the past two months and for more than eight hours a day, and, with that said, I can’t complain about the results: Overall, I have an easier time working day-to-day.

However, I can’t confidently recommend the X-Chair, mainly because I can find a chair more suited to my preferences at a lower price point. Though I didn’t find the brand’s features to be as dynamic as stated on the site, the X-Chair does check off the very basics.

  • I enjoyed having the option to adjust parts of the chair to keep my posture supported, with the armrest and headrest being my favorite parts
  • Actually having a headrest on an office chair helped give my neck the necessary support
  • I wish the X-Chair had flexible back support. The dynamic feature for the back of the chair doesn’t stay adjusted
  • I will never not bring up the price as a main factor in my decision-making. For the price, I wish the chair had automated features that would make it feel worth the splurge
  • Clearer instructions are needed, especially for installing the headrest. (This may be more of a quality assurance issue, assuming that other customers received the final step, but I rummaged all throughout the packaging and scoured online for instructions to no avail)

How We Reviewed the Office Chairs and Why You Should Trust Us

Why You Should Trust Us

We always research products thoroughly before including them, and test nearly everything—office chairs are no exception. Our writers and editors actually tested more than 30 chairs, but only 13 made the cut to our best-of list. If we don't love it, we would never recommend it.

Our reviews are always thorough, in-depth, and honest. We put ourselves in the shoes of the shopper (because most of the time, we are the shopping!), and make sure that we’re answering the questions that we would want answered in the buying process.

How We Chose the Chairs

Our priorities in chair selection were ergonomic integrity, style, and (of course) comfort in a variety of price points.

How We Test Our Office Chairs

Our editors and contributors set these up in their home offices and experienced the day-in, day-out reality of sitting in them for a long period of time.

Office Chair FAQs: Let's Hear From The Experts

Have questions about the best office chair for you? We talked to TikTok's favorite neurosurgeon, Betsy Grunch, MD, FAANS, FACS and Gainesville Physical Therapy's Kristy Basinger PT, CHT to get answers on how to source the best chair for you.

What are some of the health risks associated with using a bad desk chair?

Betsy Grunch, MD, FAANS, FACS; Kristy Basinger PT, CHT: A proper fitting desk chair is one of the cornerstones of postural health. People that sit for long hours in a poorly adjusted chair will experience neck, back, shoulder and hip pain. This can trigger headaches, lack of concentration and compression of the discs in the spine. Low back pain is one of the main reasons for missed days at work so it's essential to choose a chair that supports the spine.

If you've been sitting on a bad chair or you feel like you’ve damaged your spinal alignment is there anything you can do to fix it?

BG & KB: You can start by frequently checking and changing your posture in your chair.

  • Align your head: Your chin should not jut forward and your head should be centered over your shoulders.
  • Relax your shoulders and avoid hunching forward: Think about gently pulling your shoulder blades together.
  • Your pelvis should be neutral: Practice this by tucking your tailbone under and then rocking forward. Find the midpoint of this movement.
  • Place your feet flat on the floor and avoid crossing your legs.

What exactly does it mean for a chair to be “ergonomic” and why is it important?

BG & KB: A chair that is coined “ergonomic” should offer firmness that is supportive yet comfortable. It should have multiple components that adjust all aspects of the chair. Adjustments are important because we all have different body types and heights. Utilizing the adjustable components will help to ensure that your spine is in a healthy position to reduce the risk of neck and back strain. But remember—no matter how good your chair is, you need to stand up frequently throughout the day.

What are the most supportive materials when it comes to the optimal desk chair?

BG & KB: Your back rest should be made from breathable material such as mesh. This allows for better circulation of air, decreased perspiration and greater comfort. The seat should have adequate padding that consists of dense foam that provides support with enough comfort.

Home office ergonomic chair: Review of The Homeworker Plus

The Homeworker Plus home office ergonomic chair by Posturite

In collaboration with Posturite

If I were to suggest one key piece of equipment to invest in when you work from home, a home office ergonomic chair would be top of the list.

Given how long we spend at the desk , you need a chair that is comfortable, supportive, and adjustable in a variety of ways.

I have been testing The Homeworker Plus chair as part of a collaboration with ergonomic specialists, Posturite. I am always happy to recommend products if I feel they add value for The Homeworker audience and after a couple of months using this chair, I can confidently say it is one I would buy for the home office.

Here are my thoughts on why this is a great addition if you’re looking for a home office ergonomic chair.

What you need from a home office ergonomic chair

If you are spending money on a decent ergonomic chair then there are a few key considerations:

• Comfort: You want it to be comfortable so you can endure longer stints at the desk and to sustain working from home daily for the long-term.

• Supportive: It needs to provide adequate support for your body while sitting, particularly for your lower back with lumbar support.

• Adjustable: A suitable ergonomic chair should allow you to sit in the correct position with ease. You should be able to adjust the arms, back rest, seat height and depth, and lumbar support.

• Durable: If you are investing in a home office ergonomic chair, you want to ensure it is sturdy to withstand years of daily use and pushing back and forth. You also want materials that are hard wearing while still comfortable.

When you order a Homeworker Plus chair, it will arrive needing some assembly. There is an easy-to-follow video on the Posturite site showing you exactly how to assemble the chair with a simple walk-through guide.

You can also take advantage of their done for you installation and set up service whereby the delivery team specialists can assemble the chair and show you exactly how to adjust the Homeworker Plus to suit your size and needs.

The Homeworker Plus ergonomic chair for working from home

The Homeworker Plus review

Over the years I have used a variety of chairs to work in, from a dining chair to more ergonomic models. For a long time, I had a basic home office chair that offered a minimal degree of support. I could adjust its height, it had arm rests, and a contoured back.

However, it was not fully adjustable, the seat depth was not quite right and the lower back support not really existent!

The Homeworker editor sitting n The Homeworker Plus ergonomic chair

During lockdown, there was a spell where I had to regularly use the kitchen table and dining chair. I often ached after sitting at the table or desk (admittedly for too long at times). While you can take responsibility for moving more and sitting better, a good chair will allow you to do that comfortably and easily by supporting your frame in the right places.

It is only after switching to use a proper ergonomic chair that you notice the difference. A short time after using The Homeworker Plus I honestly felt better. I was fidgeting less because I was more comfortable. I could see an instant difference in how my shoulders and neck felt because my lower back was better supported. All of this meant I could focus better and get on with my work!

One of the most impressive things about The Homeworker Plus is how feature-rich it is.

Once adjusted, I don’t have to change anything very often but I find it useful to have adjustable armrests and towards the end of the day, it is nice to pump up the lumbar support a little.

The chair has the following features:

  • Back rest adjustment to change the angle and height
  • Adjustable seat height
  • Seat slide to change the depth
  • Inflatable lumbar support
  • Adjustable height and depth of armrests
  • Tension adjustment for incline.

Adjustable levers on The Homeworker Plus ergonomic chair

Price is always going to be a factor when making a purchasing decision. There are ergonomic chairs that cost literally thousands of pounds. They often have a certain aesthetic and debates rage over whether they are worth the price tag. If you have money in the budget, Posturite also stock the more luxe Håg range. However, if you aren’t looking to spend many hundreds of pounds, The Homeworker Plus could be your answer.

At just less than £300, it is not a super low budget option but it is among one of the most affordable I have found for a chair that provides so many features.

You can also take advantage of the special discount, exclusively for The Homeworker readers. Get 20% off their range of homeworker furniture with code: THW20

The verdict

Overall, I have been impressed by The Homeworker Plus with its many adjustment options. It does look like an office chair – but most specialist ergonomic seats do. The 8 Best Office Chairs for Back Pain, Tested and Reviewed

These 8 office chairs will make it easier to get through your workday by reducing aches and pains.

Verywell Health / Maria Rowella

If you have a desk job, we’re willing to bet you also have some back pain: sitting in a chair for eight or more hours per day isn’t what our bodies were made for, so it makes sense that being stationary affects our spinal health. The right office chair , however, can work with your body instead of against it, relieving existing back pain and preventing future pain .

An office chair designed to help with back pain should be adjustable, have the ability to recline, and feature a good amount of lumbar support . To find the best office chairs for back pain , we tested 14 popular chairs in the Verywell Health Lab for comfort, support, adjustability, durability, and overall value. We also asked experts to weigh in on what makes one office chair better than another when it comes to working with back pain. Here are the eight best office chairs for back pain.

Why We Recommend It

We felt supported by every part of the TEMPUR-Lumbar Support Office Chair , from the contoured seat to the mesh backrest to the adjustable armrests . We suspect some of that is due to the TEMPER memory foam used to cushion the seat, which Karena Wu , DPT, owner of ActiveCare Physical Therapy in New York City and India, says helps it mold to your body and offers pressure relief based on your individual shape.

That was certainly our experience in testing: the backrest supported the natural curve of our spine, while the firm, yet comfortable, seat aligned our posture so we sat up straighter. Adjusting this classic, modern chair was easy, and we appreciated that the lumbar support could be customized to our liking as well, alleviating back pain exactly where we needed it. Meanwhile, the armrests are so adjustable we were able to put them in positions we didn’t even know we needed.

It was a challenge to put together because of its heft, but that also made it an exceedingly sturdy and stable chair . For under $400, we think it’s the perfect blend of comfort, functionality and affordability.

Keep in Mind

It was tough to assemble: The pieces are heavy, the instructions are not very clear, and we needed a second person to assist us.

Best Budget

Branch furniture saddle chair.

  • Lumbar Support 4 /5
  • Adjustability 4 /5
  • Design 5 /5

Helps correct and maintain posture

Promotes frequent stretch breaks

Stows away easily under a desk

No backrest for reclining

Only accommodates up to 265 pounds

Height: 21.2 to 31.5 in | Weight Capacity: 265 lbs | Headrest: No | Adjustable: Yes | Warranty: 5 years

Dr. Wu likes that the Branch Furniture Saddle Chair is a simple, low-profile office chair that keeps your posture aligned with a unique design meant t o support your buttocks and thighs without a backrest . While it might not be for everyone, we were pleasantly surprised to find that a chair without a backrest could benefit our posture: Sitting in the Saddle Chair forced us to sit upright and straight in the chair rather than adopt our usual sideways posture, which took pressure off our back and neck .

Because the chair is so minimalist, it was easy to assemble but also limited in terms of adjustability. We also like its aesthetic and think it would suit any midcentury or modern-designed home with its old-school appeal. We loved how it packed so many benefits into a small package; it's ergonomic but can be slid under desks and easily rolled from room to room. Sometimes we missed having a backrest to lean against, but we took that as a reminder to get up and stretch.

It might not work for long days of sitting at a desk since there’s no tilt or recline option, and we’re not sure how comfortable it would be for people with larger bodies (though it felt stable when we sat on it).

Verywell Health / Abby Moore

Most Adjustable

Branch furniture verve chair.

Branch Furniture

  • Lumbar Support 4.2 /5
  • Design 4.2 /5

Space-saving

Easy to assemble

Helps maintain posture

Needs padded armrests

Not designed for larger bodies

Height: 37 to 41 in | Weight Capacity: 275 lbs | Headrest: No | Adjustable: Yes | Warranty: 7 years

You can adjust almost every moving part of the Branch Furniture Verve Chair . The seat height, lumbar support, armrests, and tilt feature can all be customized to your liking. You can even adjust both how much it tilts and how much tension the tilt gives you. The adjustability of the chair helped it fit our body well, providing relief where we needed it.

From an aesthetic point of view, we appreciated that the chair was sleek and narrow and didn’t take up much space or look like an eyesore in our workspace. It was easy to assembl e, rolled across the floor smoothly, and stayed reliably comfortable all day. We felt it was fairly priced considering how flexible it was and how much it helped our posture and back pain .

We would have loved to see a headrest and padded armrests included as part of the design, and we don’t think people with larger bodies would find it as comfortable.

Best Design

Steelcase karman.

  • Lumbar Support 4.3 /5
  • Adjustability 4.5 /5

Offers individualized tension settings

Looks good in most home offices

Lightweight yet durable

Needs a few more adjustable features

Height: 39.1 to 43.5 in | Weight Capacity: 350 lbs | Headrest: No | Adjustable: Yes | Warranty: Limited lifetime

If you’re shopping for an office chair that seamlessly blends form and function, the Steelcase Karman looks stylish and rolls out of its shipping box fully assembled. It also comes recommended by Grant Radermacher , DC, chiropractor at Ascent Chiropractic in Wisconsin, who says the design is not just attractive but ergonomic, featuring a flexible frame to move with your body and simplified adjustments to get the right fit.

In testing, we found the Karman to be luxurious and supportive, helping us sit up straighter when using the chair. The backrest is made of cooling mesh and its adjustability allowed us to dial in the precise firmness we wanted. It’s a durable chair that’s lightweight and can accommodate a wide range of body sizes. At over $1,000 it’s pricey, but we were stunned by how quickly it resolved our existing lower back pain. So for us, it was worth the expense.

It’s missing a few minor details that could make it even more comfortable, like a headrest and added lumbar support. If those are important to you, the cost of the Karman may not be reasonable.

Verywell Health / Donna Freydkin

Best with Headrest

Autonomous ergochair pro.

Autonomous

  • Lumbar Support 4.8 /5

Designed for whole-body support

Multiple ways to adjust it

Adjustments can be complicated

Not the best choice for posture maintenance

Height: 46 to 50 in | Weight Capacity: 300 lbs | Headrest: Yes | Adjustable: Yes | Warranty: 2 years

We love the combination of affordability and ergonomics that the Autonomous ErgoChair Pro , offers. Dr. Radermacher says this chair is a great value for people looking to avoid back pain without spending $1,000 or more on a designer chair.

Our biggest takeaway from testing this chair was that it’s made for support: the seat is deep, wide, and comfortably padded , everything from the armrests to the backrest tilt is adjustable, and the lumbar support can be tweaked for both depth and tilt. Notably, the headrest on this chair was worth the price alone ; it’s a game changer, providing much-needed back support for the lumbar region all the way up to the neck and shoulders .

It takes a lot of trial and error to get the right adjustments with this chair. Make sure to check the user manual to customize it to your liking.

Verywell Health / Anna Knief

Best with Tilt Tension

Haworth fern office chair.

Easy-to-operate adjustment levers

Recline and resistance adjustment options

Not as soft or cushioned as other chairs

Height: 41.5 to 47 in | Weight Capacity: 325 lbs | Headrest: No | Adjustable: Yes | Warranty: 12 years

If you’re looking for an extremely adjustable chair that isn’t quite as complex to work with as the Autonomous ErgoChair Pro, the Haworth Fern offers a wide range of backrest adjustability in a simpler package. In testing, we liked having the option to adjust how far the backrest reclines and how much resistance it gives us; in fact, even on the lowest setting, this chair provides a good amount of back support , so you won’t be allowed to slouch and slump while working.

On top of having multiple adjustability options, the Haworth Fern is easy to adjust : the levers are all fairly accessible and we were able to operate them while sitting in the seat. It’s rock solid, with a streamlined appearance that fades into the background rather than sticking out. We thought it could have been a bit more cushioned—especially for its cost—but the fact that we were able to get rid of our old lumbar pillow and experience back pain relief while using this chair made us think the Haworth Fern is worth it.

It’s designed more for support than comfort, so we would have liked just a bit more padding in the seat for maximum cushion.

Verywell Health / Cecily McAndrews

Best for Lumbar Support

Steelcase think office chair.

  • Lumbar Support 4.5 /5

Easy, smooth adjustments

Attractive, streamlined appearance

High-end look and feel

Armrests don’t lock into place

Height: 37.3 to 42.5 | Weight Capacity: 400 lbs | Headrest: No | Adjustable: Yes | Warranty: Limited lifetime

The Steelcase Think Chair has an ergonomic design that matches the natural curve of the spine plus an option to add extra support in the backrest . We appreciated how easy it was to increase the lumbar support: all we had to do was slide the lumbar support bar higher or lower with two handles on either side of the backrest.

Of course, that’s not the only way the Think Chair adjusts; the seat height moves up and down smoothly, the armrests can pivot or be moved forward or backward , and the backrest recline is easily adjusted with a knob. We were pleased to find that its construction is solid and sturdy, the fabric feels soft and high-quality, and the adjustment devices are all manipulated without any issues. Overall, we think it’s a low-profile chair with some unique features.

Some people may find the price is worthwhile thanks to the lumbar support options, but in some ways, it’s a bit overpriced. We also struggled to lock the armrests into place, which didn’t affect our usage of the chair but was definitely annoying.

Verywell Health / Julia Sayers Gokhale

Best for Back and Neck Pain

Steelcase series 1 air.

Flexible yet supportive

Comes in different colors

Limited armrest adjustability

Height: 36.5 to 41.25 in | Weight Capacity: 400 lbs | Headrest: No | Adjustable: Yes | Warranty: Limited lifetime

Thanks to the flexible back support featured with the Steelcase A1 Air chair, we were able to get rid of the lumbar pillow we used to keep strapped to our old office chair. Not only did we feel like the backrest fit perfectly into the curve of our spine , but we could tell this chair supported and maintained our posture, too. It effectively relieved some of our existing back and neck pain from sitting at a desk all day.

The high mobility of this chair was a huge advantage for us in testing: the backrest is flexible enough to allow for stretching and twisting in the chair, but not so flexible that it doesn’t force us to maintain proper spinal alignment . There was virtually no way for us to slouch in this chair, and we actually found ourselves looking forward to sitting down in it. On top of its back and neck support, this chair is sleek, slim, and beautiful; we got it in a periwinkle blue color that looks great in our home office. It’s durable, easy to adjust, and simple to assemble , making it worthy of its price tag.

We thought the armrests could be limiting for people with larger bodies since they don’t move forward or backward and the chair itself is a little narrow. (You can buy a version of this chair without armrests online, however).

Verywell Health / Jessica Fleming

  • Raymour & Flanigan 4U Ergonomic Office Chair w/ Mesh Back: This chair was disappointing in several ways: it was delivered in poor condition (despite being ordered with white glove delivery), did not feature the adjustability that was promised, and—in our opinion—was no more comfortable than a more budget-friendly chair from Walmart. We wouldn’t recommend it.
  • Raymour & Flanigan Run II Ergonomic Office Chair: We thought this chair was fairly comfortable, and the armrest adjustability was great, but the lumbar support wasn’t adjustable at all. That seemed like a missed opportunity to make this office chair even more back-pain-friendly.

How We Tested the Office Chairs for Back Pain

Our editors received 14 office chairs at home and used them at least twice per week for a full, eight-hour workday. Testers were encouraged to take a movement break every 30 to 60 minutes when sitting in the chair for work. This helped us evaluate the comfort and support of each chair within the recommended parameters. According to our testing expert, Kelsey Rosen, DPT, physical therapist at the Hospital for Special Surgery, you shouldn’t be overly comfortable in your office chair: you should be reminded to get up and take frequent breaks.

By the end of the testing period, we had identified eight office chairs to be included in our top picks. We chose these chairs based on our evaluation of the following attributes:

  • Setup : We assessed how easy it was to receive and assemble the chair. If white glove delivery was performed, we noted that, along with how clear the instructions were and if we needed a second person to help us put it together.
  • Comfort : We considered the width and depth of the seat and whether the cushioning was sufficient to allow for longer periods of sitting.
  • Lumbar support : Paying specific attention to how well the backrest fit along the natural curve of our spine, we evaluated how much support there was in the lower back region and if the lumbar area offered any adjustable support for people of different sizes.
  • Adjustability : We checked for adjustability in seat height, forward/backward tilt, and armrests. We also noted how easy it was to make these adjustments.
  • Durability : An office chair should be stable and built to last, so we tested it to see if it was wobbly or flimsy and also looked for any manufacturer’s height and weight limit requirements.
  • Design : Whether a classic or modern chair isn’t typically a dealbreaker for an otherwise perfect chair. However, we know many people consider aesthetics when shopping, so we noted any major design features, styles, or flaws.
  • Value : At the end of the testing period, our editors checked the current list price of their office chair and determined if it was appropriately priced based on the performance they observed during the testing.

What to Look for When Shopping for an Office Chair for Back Pain

  • Adjustability: The likelihood of finding a chair that provides perfect support and alignment right off the shelf is unusual, says Dr. Radermacher, so you need one that can be adjusted to your body. In addition to being height-adjustable so your hips and knees can bend at a 90-degree angle, Dr. Wu says the seat should be able to push back against the backrest and comfortably support your pelvis and thighs.
  • Lumbar Support: If you’re buying an office chair for back pain, lumbar support should be at the top of your list. Dr. Radermacher suggests looking for a chair with a backrest that makes full contact with the natural curve of your lower back and cradles your spine without exerting excessive pressure or feeling too shallow.
  • Materials: Susan Eby , PT, MS, founder of Eby Physical Therapy, PLLC in New York City, says the ideal office chair material is breathable and firm enough to support your body but provides enough give or cushioning to be comfortable. A memory foam seat covered with durable outer material, like leather or blended fabrics, and a mesh backrest can provide comfort and breathability.
  • Recline: This is a non-negotiable feature, says Dr. Radermacher, especially if you’re already predisposed to back pain from sitting. In general, tilting your upper body away from your legs while seated reduces the strain on your muscles and helps maintain your spine's natural S-curve. Aim for an angle of around 110 degrees, he says.
  • Quality and Durability: Your office chair should be sturdy and not prone to wobbling. You should also be able to make adjustments easily, ideally while you’re seated in the chair, without worrying about stability.
  • Price and Value: A high-quality, durable office chair can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to over $1,000. A higher cost doesn’t always mean you’re getting a better chair (our top pick, the TEMPUR-Lumbar Support™ Office Chair , costs less than $400), but you may need to pay more for extra lumbar support and cushioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you spend eight to 10 hours a day at your desk, Dr. Radermacher says investing in a good office chair is basically investing in a long-term commitment to your spinal health. His advice? Don’t cut corners, but you don’t have to break the bank, either: with a little research, you can find an affordable office chair that provides just as much value as the more expensive brands.

According to Dr. Wu, using lumbar support can improve lower back pain because it will remind you to sit up with good posture and maintain the natural arch of your spine. On top of purchasing a quality office chair with back support, she suggests some basic physical therapy exercises, like pelvic tilts .

If you are ordering the light gray chair, it is not the color shown in the picture. It is darker. I was really excited about the look of the chair from the picture. But it does not look anything like that. It’s more of a terrible office gray. This chair was also very difficult to put together. And, in the chair I received, I am unable to change the tension of the tilt of the chair. Wayfair is sending me off to the manufacturer to help me with the main problem of it not functioning properly.

It is light yet stable, the arm rests are great. esp since they can be moved out of the way, and it is supportive. On top of all of that, it's stylish ( I got the grey), and it doesn't distract too much from our other decor in our wfh situation!

This chair is VERY hard to assemble. The pre-drilled holes on the bottom of the seat do not all line up for easy bolting. It is a great price and comfortable when you finally assemble it and use your own drill.

Chair is very comfortable and the perfect size for me (6ft tall). Love the adjustable arms, lets me tuck the chair full away when I need a little extra space.

Its ok. My complaint is the ergonomic back is in 1 spot - at the very bottom - and not adjustable. So for me it pushed me too far forward for my comfort. So now my husband uses it as a gaming chair.

Saint Paul, MN

I needed an office chair that sits up a little higher than all the others (21.5" is the highest of most). I have a stand and sit desk, so the higher seat fits my desk height and the back's lumbar fits perfectly in the lower portion of my back.

Very satisfied especially for the price! This chair is comfortable.

Excellent chair. Easy assembly and as comfortable as you would hope.

Love these chairs! Very comfortable and also ordered in gray which is a greenish gray color.
