literacy homework for year 1

The activity sheets are structured around the narrative, non-fiction and poetry blocks of the new literacy Framework. The content comes from common Year 1 fiction and non-fiction themes. The activities are designed to support work done across the curriculum as well as in literacy teaching.

The activities follow the main literacy priorities in Year 1 and are designed to be used flexibly. They are intended to be used with an adult: it would be pointless for the child to do them alone. Much of the learning is in the interaction.

Each activity sheet has a clear focus and advice to the adult as well as the child. There are four main types: • Understanding and engaging with texts; • Shaping texts; • Sentence structure and punctuation; • Spelling.

Each unit contains a mixture of the activity types.

literacy homework for year 1

In preparation for the likely closure of schools, we have created suggestions that are easy to implement at home or in school. These suggestions draw upon PLD titles that are likely already in schools. If schools do not have the recommended texts, then the below three-week plans, which includes parent information videos, downloads and handouts, has been provided as a starting point.

These guides can be used in full or relevant tasks can be selected from and collated. If you have any questions read our post ‘Unsure where to start?’ HERE .

Key skills for parents to work on at home :

Literacy Activities

  • Activity 1 – Phonic passage reading and phonic passage rewriting. Download the phonic dictation passages for Stage 1 HERE and Stage 2 HERE . These activities vary from 10 – 20 minutes per day.
  • Activity 2 – Daily generation of news stories. Download the news resources HERE . These activities should take 10 – 20 minutes per day.
  • Activity 3 – Weekly narrative story writing with picture prompts. Download the narrative resources HERE . These activities should take 10 – 20 minutes per day.
  • Activity 4 – Phonic-based daily spelling activities. These activities should take 15 – 20 minutes per day. Download the Structured Synthetic Phonics Time-Savers for Stage 1 HERE and Stage 2 HERE .

Oral Language Activities

  • Activity 1 – Ten-minute language games. Download the games HERE . These activities should take 10 – 15 minutes per day.
  • Activity 2 – Picture book reading and comprehension questions. Read the book out loud together while asking the downl o adable questions cards . This should take 15 – 20 minutes per day.

These activities have been compiled into a downloadable summary of allocated time. Click  here  to download the summary of allocated time for Year 1 & 2.

Activity 1: Phonic passage reading and phonic passage rewriting

These phonic dictation tasks require minimal printing and present a phonic-based reading, writing and editing process that can be relatively easily communicated. Three levels of phonic passages have been included for Year 1 and 2. If these passages are not appropriate for your child, browse the phonic passages listed in the other year levels. A weekly routine is proposed below:

Monday: Read the allocated passage and time the reading. Task 2: A simple comprehension task, in which students illustrate (and label) as many elements in the passage as is possible.

Tuesday: Read the allocated passage and time the reading. Task 3: Copying and handwriting practice, by copying the passage.

Wednesday: Read the allocated passage and time the reading. Task 4: Editing practise by identifying and correcting the errors within the passage.

Thursday: Read the allocated passage and time the reading. Task 5: First attempt at the rewriting of the passage in the context of dictation.

Friday: Read the allocated passage and time the reading. Task 5: Second attempt at the rewriting of the passage in the context of dictation.

PLD suggests that parents and/or caregivers mark the work as the child completes each task. Upon the reopening of schools, students will be presented again with the placement test to determine phonic based skills and the assignment of levels.

Classroom cellphone rules and a ban on book bans: What school bills passed in Minnesota

W ith deficits looming, Minnesota's school districts brought their arguments for new funding to the State Capitol this year in the face of warnings not to expect much after a bountiful 2023 session.

And the final tally?

"Very modest," Scott Croonquist, executive director of the Association of Metropolitan School Districts, said this week.

Lawmakers managed to bolster funding for new literacy programs and took the first step to giving student teachers the financial support they say is needed to stick with 12 weeks of classroom training. Otherwise, it was a policy-driven year, with attention given to curbing excessive cellphone use and keeping kids in school and libraries free of book-ban politics .

"Students must be the center of our focus, and this legislation puts attention squarely on our kids," state Rep. Laurie Pryor, DFL-Minnetonka, chair of the House Education Policy Committee, said of the education policy bill approved in the session's closing days.

Here's what they did and some homework they left for later.

In an effort to keep students on task and to lessen the risks of cyberbullying, the state is requiring every school district and charter school to set cellphone use policies by March 15, 2025.

The legislation is not prescriptive, but state Rep. Sandra Feist, DFL-New Brighton, and Rep. Kristin Robbins, R-Maple Grove, made clear this year they'd like schools to be cellphone-free — and they pointed to success at a pair of middle schools where students must keep their phones locked up or out of sight.

The state's principals association will advise districts on ways to minimize the effects of cellphones on student behavior, mental health and academic achievement.

School attendance has suffered post-pandemic and lawmakers have responded by establishing a legislative work group to study chronic absenteeism in the coming months. In addition, 12 districts are being asked to come up with "promising practices" that ensure students get to class.

Minneapolis Public Schools is to take the lead and will receive $1 million of $4.7 million in state aid being dedicated to the effort. The 12 districts must conduct their first virtual meeting by Aug. 1.

The legislative work group is charged with recommending how best to tackle absenteeism and truancy, and must issue a final report by Dec. 31.

Matt Shaver, policy director with EdAllies, a group that works closely with underserved communities, said the action was a "start," but a "big deal," too, given limits on new funding this session.

A year ago, the state passed the Read Act, which tasked teachers with learning a new way to teach kids to read. But districts were left wondering about long-term funding and the time available to train personnel.

There was the question, too, of how to pay teachers for their time learning , so lawmakers this session allocated $31.4 million to districts, charter schools and cooperatives to compensate teachers as they dig into programs placing a greater emphasis on phonics.

A pair of training deadlines were extended by a year, too.

Croonquist said the Read Act funding "certainly is appreciated, but it's not going to cover all of the costs."

The state also set out to ease the financial burden on student teachers who prepare for the profession by working weeks for free. A pilot program will supply a total of $6.5 million in stipends to student teachers enrolled at eight Minnesota colleges and universities.

Denise Specht, president of Education Minnesota, commended lawmakers for finding ways to invest in current and future teachers during a tight budget year.

"Every Minnesota student deserves a great teacher who has the support and financial security they need to focus on the work," Specht said in a news release.

Another new measure prohibits book bans in schools and public libraries. The move comes at a time when books focusing on multiracial and LGBTQ themes have been removed from shelves at libraries across the U.S.

Students need access to books with "characters like themselves and their families," Specht said, praising the new policy.

Republicans said the legislation was unnecessary because book ban campaigns have been infrequent here.

A proposal to open rigorous courses to more students of color failed to advance, as did a proposed expansion of early learning scholarships to middle-income families . But the state Department of Education is receiving $7 million to establish the logistical groundwork to make the expansion happen.

Ericca Maas of the advocacy group Think Small said the move was an "important vote of confidence" in the fight to make child care more affordable to more families.

literacy homework for year 1

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration said Tuesday it is releasing 1 million barrels of gasoline from a Northeast reserve established after Superstorm Sandy in a bid to lower prices at the pump this summer.

The sale, from storage sites in New Jersey and Maine, will be allocated in increments of 100,000 barrels at a time. The approach will create a competitive bidding process that ensures gasoline can flow into local retailers ahead of the July 4 holiday and sold at competitive prices, the Energy Department said.

The move, which the department said is intended to help “lower costs for American families and consumers,″ follows a mandate from Congress to sell off the 10-year-old Northeast reserve and then close it. The language was included in a spending deal Congress approved in March to avert a partial government shutdown.

The Energy Department said the sale of 1 million barrels, about 42 million gallons, was timed to provide relief for motorists as the summer driving season begins.

Gasoline prices average about $3.60 per gallon nationwide, up 6 cents from a year ago, according to AAA. Tapping gasoline reserves is one of the few actions a president can take by himself to try to control inflation, an election year liability for the party in control of the White House.

“The Biden-Harris administration is laser-focused on lowering prices at the pump for American families, especially as drivers hit the road for summer driving season,” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said in a statement. “By strategically releasing this reserve in between Memorial Day and July 4th, we are ensuring sufficient supply flows to the tri-state and Northeast at a time hardworking Americans need it the most.”

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said release of gas from the Northeast reserve builds on actions by President Joe Biden “to lower gas and energy costs — including historic releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and the largest-ever investment in clean energy.″

Biden significantly drained the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, dropping the stockpile to its lowest level since the 1980s. The election year move helped stabilize gasoline prices that had been rising in the wake of the war in Europe but drew complaints from Republicans that the Democratic president was playing politics with a reserve meant for national emergencies.

The Biden administration has since begun refilling the oil reserve , which had more than 367 million barrels of crude oil as of last week. The total is lower than levels before the Russia-Ukraine war but still the world’s largest emergency crude oil supply.

The Northeast sale will require that the 42-million-gallon reserve is transferred or delivered no later than June 30, the Energy Department said.

Congressional Republicans have long criticized the Northeast reserve, which was established by former President Barack Obama, saying any such stockpile should have been created by Congress. A 2022 report by the Government Accountability Office said the gasoline reserve, which has never been tapped, would provide minimal relief during a severe shortage. The reserve costs about $19 million a year to maintain.

Patrick De Haan, an analyst for GasBuddy, said sale of the Northeast reserve would have little impact on gasoline prices nationally, although there “may be a slight downward pressure on prices” in the Northeast. The million-barrel reserve only amounts to about 2.7 hours of total U.S. gasoline consumption, he said.

“As an analyst, this reserve never really made a whole lot of sense to have,’' De Haan said in an Associated Press interview. The reserve is very small and must be frequently rotated, “because gasoline has a shelf life,’' De Haan said. “That’s why there’s really no nation that has an emergency stockpile of gasoline’’ other than the U.S.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve has vastly more quantities of oil needed in an emergency, he said.

Tax revenue jumps 22% in April, but U.S. deficit still looms large

The U.S. Treasury ran a surplus in April, as tax payments jumped by 22% from a year ago. The federal government is still on track to run a deficit of more than $1.5 trillion this year.

The U.S. Treasury ran a surplus last month, thanks to the April 15th tax deadline. But the federal government is still on track to end the fiscal year more than $1.5 trillion in the red.

April tax receipts totaled $776 billion — a 22% increase from the previous year. Treasury officials credited part of the jump to the growing number of people working and rising wages.

Government spending for the month rose 23% from a year ago, with the biggest increase — $26 billion — coming from higher interest payments on the federal debt. Interest payments have gone up as a result of both rising debt and today's high interest rates.

Government spending outpacing revenue.

Seven months into the government's fiscal year, federal spending has outpaced tax receipts by $855 billion. The deficit so far is 8% smaller than at this point last year, but still remarkably large for a country with a strong economy and an unemployment rate below 4%.

Speaking at the Brookings Institution Friday, White House economic adviser Lael Brainard blamed much of the deficit on the 2017 tax cut.

"The Trump tax cuts and the Bush tax cuts and their extensions have added $10 trillion to the national debt, accounting for 90% of the non-emergency increases in the debt-to-GDP ratio since 2001," said Brainard, who directs the National Economic Council.

Large parts of the 2017 tax cut are set to expire next year, setting up a likely battle in Congress. Republicans want to extend the tax cuts while providing further tax relief to corporations and wealthy heirs. President Biden wants to extend the cuts only for those earning less than $400,000, while raising the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28%.

Extending the 2017 cuts would add more than $5 trillion to the deficit over the next decade, according to estimates by the Joint Committee on Taxation .
