Turkey as a Tourist Destination Essay

Introduction.

Turkey, as a tourist destination, offers a mixture of Western and Asian influences in the culture, architecture and cuisine, as well as the great historic sites in combination with a beautiful natural environment. Geographically, the country is located in Western Asia and Southern Europe, which had an impact on its culture that combines Western features with those of the East. This state was ranked as the sixth most popular tourist destination in the world, attracting more than 32 million tourists in 2017 ( Hurriyet Daily News, 2018). Due to the importance that tourism has for Turkey’s economy, the government invests in developing infrastructure suitable for tourists.

Turkey is a heterogeneous country, with most people identifying as Turks by nationality and accepting Islam as their religion. The population in 2019 was estimated at more than 83 million, and the majority of inhabitants are Turks, with a minor portion of approximately 15% declaring themselves as Kurds (Egresi, 2016). The Kurdish-Turkish conflict is one of the reasons why Turkey may be viewed by tourists as a dangerous site to visit, considering that this conflict has been ongoing since the 1970s.

Major cities are Ankara, the capital and Istanbul, a city that connects the Asian and European parts of Turkey. Most of the main cities are ports, connected to one of the seas – Black, Marmara, Aegean, and Mediterranean ( Seas of Turkey, no date). This report will present an assessment of Turkey as a tourist destination, including all of the leading natural and historical sites, the culture, political situation, accommodation and the social environment.

Political Map

In terms of politics, the country’s location in the East and Europe plays an essential role in the relationships that Turkey maintains with other states. Due to its location, Turkey is a transcontinental state (Egresi, 2016). Most importantly, only 4% of the state’s land is located in Europe. However, this connection to Europe allows Turkey to attract tourists from Russia, Germany, United Kingdom, Bulgaria, and other European countries.

A peninsula implies that the majority of the territory is linked with water, a sea or an ocean, while there is a connection with the land as well. The majority of Turkey’s territory is located on the Anatolian peninsula, surrounded by Turkish Straits (Egresi, 2016). For Turkey, the part of the state on the Anatolian peninsula is, where the capital, Ankara, is located. This peninsula itself is located in Western Asia. The smaller part of Turkey linked to Europe is called East Thrace. The neighboring states of Turkey include Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Syria, and Iraq (Egresi, 2016). The country has access to the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea, and the Aegean Sea. The entrance to the sea allows Turkey to maintain ports, for example, in Izmir, Mersin and other cities.

Natural Environment

The two significant features of Turkey’s natural environment are a combination of coastal land and mountains. Examples include mountain Babadag and Turkish Riviera, two distinctly different sites for tourists, one suitable for active tourism and the other is a comfortable vacation destination. Babadag is the name of the mountain located in the Southwestern part of Turkey, which is a part of Muğla Province. The elevation of this mountain is 1,969 meters, and it is composed of limestone (Egresi, 2016). Near this mountain, there is a valley, which separates it from another high mountain Karatepe.

In contrast to the calm environment of the mountains, Turkish Riviera, which also offers a beautiful natural cite is a more well-renounced beach resort located near Antalya. It is located on the coast of the Mediterranean sea. This is an ideal place for a resort, which offers a combination of beautiful natural resources, such as the sea and the coastline with comfortable and modern infrastructure.

Tourists would experience these natural environments differently. Turkish Riviera is a well-developed sea resort, which attracts many tourists from Europe. This means that the infrastructure there is established, there are a plethora of options for accommodation and transportation. Ury (1990) defines a tourist experience as a visual one, meaning that the central aspect of what a person expects to experience when traveling to another state is to see something visually pleasing, which is the ‘tourist gaze.’ Due to the fact that Turkey offers a combination of different natural resources, a tourist would be able to choose a place where the natural environment is unfamiliar to them. However, the natural environment of Turkey has something to offer to tourists that prefer an active type of holiday, opposing Ury’s view. As Perkins and Thomas (2001) argue, tourists look for ways of engaging their bodies more actively, and in Turkey, they can do this by choosing to walk up the mountains, stroll in the valleys, or swim in the sea of the Turkish Riviera. Turkeys natural environment is a primary nucleus that prompts tourists to visit this state.

Society in Turkey

The cultural features that a tourist would experience in this country are market by Turkey’s unique location between Europe and Asia. Another aspect of the ‘tourist gaze’ that Ury distinguishes is experiencing ordinary things done in an unusual matter, and Turkey is an ideal destination for such experience. Religion had played an essential role for the Turkish people before the state was declared as a republic. Currently, 99.8% follow Islam religious practices, while the remaining citizens are Christians (Egresi, 2016). Hence, for a non-Muslim tourist, Turkey would be an example of how ordinary things are done differently.

However, modern Turks are moving towards becoming an urbanized society, with more and more of the population living in large urban areas each year. For example, in the 70s, most people in Turkey live in rural areas, with some sources citing 60% of the population as rural (Egresi, 2016). Currently, 67% live in urban cities, mostly in Istanbul or cities located near the coast. Hence, the tourist experience in Turkey may be mixed, considering the political instability in this state. However, for a tourist from a Christian country, Turkey would be an excellent example of experiencing unfamiliar things. In addition, Robertson (2018) states that locals are friendly and like to chat, especially when visiting a Bazaar where salesman are always willing to engage in a conversation with a visitor.

Heritage Resources

Two primary heritage resources in Turkey include Sultan Ahmed Mosque and Hagia Sophia. According to Britannica (no date) , ‘Several locations of cultural significance have been designated UNESCO World Heritage sites, including historic areas around Istanbul, the Great Mosque and Hospital of Divriği, the old Hittite capital of Hattusha, the remains at Nemrut Dağ and Xanthos-Letoon, the city of Safranbolu, and the archaeological site of Troy’. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is recognised globally as a masterpiece of architecture and an important religious building. This Mosque shows tourists the history of Turkey as a sultanate state, which was controlled by an unelected sultan up to the 1910s ( Britannica, no date). Hagia Sophia is perhaps among the best-known heritage resources in Turkey, which is a mosque built in 537. These resources help understand the history of this destination because, for example, Haggis Sophia was build during the period of Late Antiquity and preserved to this day. It was later converted into a Cathedral and then into a mosque. By visiting this cites, a tourist can experience the history of the Ottoman Empire and modern-day Turkey firsthand.

Turkey Post-War

Turkey participated in WWI, during which many important political changes took place, and remained neutral in WWII. After the WWI Allies’ forces occupied Turkey, which strengthened the national movement ( Britannica, no date). After the expulsion of foreign troops in 1920, Turkey declared itself an independent state and the Treaty of Lausanne signed in 1923 meant the international recognition of Turkey as an independent state. As a result, the Republic of Turkey began to gain interest from international tourists.

The reforms, under the new government, also aimed to abolish the vision of Turkey as a religion-based state, taking a more Western approach. Turkey has become a significant tourist destination during the post-war period because the state became more open and democratic principles of the ruling were used by the local government. Hence, this allowed the business to develop, including the companies in the tourism industry. Arguably, political and economic factors played an essential role in local tourism post-WWI (Egresi, 2016). In terms of mass-tourism, Turkey’s location played a role in it becoming a popular destination for Europeans.

Factors Impacting Tourism

Arguably, Turkey has a lot to offer to tourists because they can choose a traditional vacation at the seaside in Antalya, or revert to sightseeing in the old cities of Istanbul and Ankara. Turkey has a rich and unique history since the state has been the Ottoman empire, where many remarkable historic sites were built, and because of its coastal location. However, when a tourist chooses a destination, they consider their own preferences, the experience they aim to gain with this journey and what a particular place has to offer.

Motivation factors are a person’s desire to travel and visit a particular site. Some examples include escaping, satisfying one’s curiosity, social needs, or to pray as part of a person’s religious journey. Also, people may want to gain more knowledge, experience beauty or experience entertainment (Kozak and Kozak, 2019. For example, Muslim people may want to visit the great mosques in Turkey, such as the Hagia Sophia, as part of their spiritual journey. Those interested in history may choose to visit Troy, which is an example of the remains of an ancient civilisation. For contemporary people, escaping their daily routine by visiting the resort in the Turkish Riviera may be a sufficient motivational factor.

‘Push’ factors

Push factors for tourists are the ones that positively impact the perception of a destination and result in tourists choosing a particular palace for a visit. Kozak and Kozak (2019) define this term as any economic, technological, or other influences that ‘push’ an individual from their place of residence to another location. This can include a variety of things, from being able to choose appropriate accommodation to local traditions and social norms that differ from those a tourist is used to in their homeland.

As mentioned, the political situation in Turkey has intensified over the last several years. There have been some terrorist attacks, and the local President has initiated conflict with Russia and had arguments with the government of Germany over the refugees (Kozak and Kozak, 2019). This means that tourists may be scared to visit Turkey over a fear of being attached or being subjected to a local policy that they do not understand due to cultural and religious differences.

‘Pull’ factors

The concept of ‘pull’ factors should be reviewed in comparison with push factors because both concepts explain why people choose to travel to places but pull factors are the ones that are generated by the location, while push factors are internal (Kozak and Kozak, 2019). Hence, if a person wants to gain knowledge about ancient civilisations and visit Troy, the factor is a ‘push’. However, when one is choosing among several destinations, for example, Turkey and Egypt, the modern infrastructure of Turkey, a choice between a seaside resort and vacation in the mountains and a variety of accommodation options to choose from will ‘pull’ a person towards choosing Turkey.

In contrast, when evaluating different ‘pull’ factors, a tourist may consider the political environment in Turkey and perceive it as negative. One issue that contributed to the decrease in tourist visits to Turkey was the escalation of political violence and intensification of the relationship with Russia (Egresi, 2016). The state became more dangerous for outside visitors due to terrorist attacks. Moreover, the President of Turkey, Erdogan, is criticised internationally for his dictatorship-like practices and policies.

Accommodation

The accommodation in Turkey was researched using popular websites such as Airbnb and Booking.com. The country has a sufficient number of hotels and private accommodations alike, for instance, in Istambul, there are 139 hotels with five stars and over 3,000 hotels in total. Notably, the city where the majority of the state’s sea resorts are located, Antalya, offers tourists the full pension type of accommodation, with food and entertainment, as well as access to the sea provided on-site. According to GoTurkey (no date a) website, one can choose from luxury resorts, boutique hotels, bungalows, apartment villas, and camping sites. Hence, this state offers a lot of options in terms of accommodation for potential visitors.

Transportation

Due to the fact that tourism plays a vital role in Turkey’s economy, the government of the state declared its plan to build the biggest airport in the state in Istanbul in 2013. Currently, a tourist can get to Turkey via air travel, the state has thirty-five airports that accept international visitors. The transportation infrastructure of this country is well-developed. According to GoTurkey (no date b), one can use public transportation, which includes minibusses, or local buses, or a taxi service. Also, the country has a railway system and an underground system in some major cities. Hence, in terms of transportation, a tourist can choose from several options, both when traveling to Turkey and when traveling within this country.

Gastronomic Experiences

In terms of cuisine, Turkey offers a unique combination of the Western and Asian dishes to its visitors. Moreover, food is an important feature that attracts many tourists to Turkey. Istanbul, for example, has a famous market where a tourist can enjoy different types of local cuisine and varied dishes. According to Robertson (2018), spices are a vital part of the local cuisine, and one can visit the Spice Bazaar in Istanbul, where there is an outstanding choice of local spices. Next, Turkish Delight is a small gel-like dessert, often served with the local coffee. Another dessert is baklava, a sweet pastry that one can try at most local restaurants. Turkish cuisine is a combination of Ottoman and European food, with some Eastern dishes.

The purpose of promotion is to ensure that potential tourists know about a location and what it has to offer. In terms of ‘pull’ factors, this means that tourists know that the infrastructure of a state is well-developed and it is easy to get to the country and be able to travel within it. In terms of ‘push’ factors, promoting the rich history of a location can attract tourists, who aim to gain more knowledge about a specific location.

In addition, in tourism, there is the primary and secondary nucleus, which are the attraction points that tourists visits. Primary nucleus typically well-known places that are the reason why the tourist selected a certain place. The second type is an attraction that a tourist knew about, but it was not the reason why they came to the location. Additionally, there are tertiary attractions, which are the ones that an individual discovers after they arrive. Promotion allows communicating the primary nucleus that will prompt a tourist to visit and tertiary nuclei that they will visit in addition once they arrive, allowing the tourist to have a better and fuller experience. Turkey is promoted as a major tourist destination because it has a diverse set of attractions, including cultural sites and natural environments to offer to potential tourists.

The two postcards selected to represent Turkey are presented as Picture 1 and Picture 2. The term interpretation can be explained as a way of sparking interest and encouraged tourist to visit a cite. For example, a postcard is an interpretation of what a tourist will experience when visiting a place, and it is meant to show the type of attractions and experiences they will gain. The first one can help interpret Turkey as a place with historical heritage, since it is one of the oldest cities in the country. The Mosque in the picture is Hagia Sophia, which was discussed in this paper as one of the key tourist attractions. The second postcard is from Antalya, a seaside resort. The interpretation of this picture is a holiday by the sea, which helps interpret Turkey as a place for a holiday in a resort.

Overall, this paper examines Turkey from the perspective of a tourist destination. The country has a unique location between Europe and Asia. The population is heterogeneous, with 99% of people identifying their nationality as Turks. The natural environment is diverse, a tourist can choose from a mountain journey or a seaside holiday. In terms of historic cites, Turkish most well-known places are Sultan Ahmed Mosque Mosque and Hagia Sophia. The society in Turkey is Muslim, which impacts the local culture and traditions. Moreover, Turkish cuisine offers a unique gastro experience to tourists, since they can try spices and traditional pastry desserts. All in all, Turkey offers a set of diverse experiences to a tourist.

The Many Reasons Why We Love Turkey

The recent tragedy in Istanbul, which took dozens of lives and injured hundreds, is devastating. In times like these, we need to remember why so many people around the world save a spot of honor for this beautiful city.

While terrorism is, unfortunately, a real concern around the world, fear should not keep us from traveling. After the Brussels airport attack, Travel + Leisure Editor Nathan Lump shared his thoughts about why travel is more important than ever in the wake of this terrible acts. This is our guiding principle as we learn more about the tragedy that has unfolded in Istanbul.

This is why the city — and the country of Turkey — hold a special place in our hearts.

1. There's history to be uncovered around every corner

Outside of Istanbul, you'll find a number of regions worthy of their own itinerary. Bodrum is a nine-hour drive across the country from Istanbul — the peninsula trumps St. Tropez as the spot to be among some of the world's most beautiful people. And with ancient artifacts and architecture along every road, there truly is no neighborhood too small when it comes to exploring.

Bridal designer Monique Lhuillier previously shared moments from her family vacation to this stunning country with us. Christina Bryant — founder of St. Frank — also gave us a peek into her trip to Istanbul where she went to source textiles from the city's many markets.

2. Turkey's hotels are quickly becoming world-class destinations

Turkey is a special place for its architecture, rich history, luxurious vacation spots, cruising routes, amazing hotels, hot-air balloon rides, unforgettable food, vibrant arts and culture scene ... the list goes on and on.

A number of hotels have popped up in Istanbul in the last couple of years; the caliber of these inns are enough of a reason to make the journey. The centrally located Raffles , the 5-star Istanbul EDITION , SOHO House , the Shangri-La Bosphorus —the hotels you'll find in Istanbul will fuel your daydreams for weeks to come.

3. The arts and culture scene is constantly growing

The art scene in Istanbul is only growing. The Istanbul Internation Arts & Culture Festival—more commonly known as IST—is one of the more formal gatherings for free art exhibits and conversations around the city's ever-changing culture, literature, and architecture. Names like Zaha Hadid, Gore Vidal, and Courtney Love are among the guests of honor in this festival's history. One of the most beautiful aspects of the city is that you can observe Istanbul's dedication to art around every corner. If you're looking for a more extensive collection of art, the Istanbul Modern should top your list. SALT —a contemporary space for local art exhibits and showcases—changed the city's cultural standing for both visitors and creators who call the city home when it opened back in 2011. With a theater, research library, a panoramic restaurant, and a extensive archive, there's no better place to immerse yourself in the many hands that have played a role in the past and present of Istanbul's culture and arts.

4. Turkey's markets are an opportunity to completely immerse yourself in culture

The inimitable Grand Bazaar is a market known around the world for its incredibly textiles, locally made jewelry, and housewares. Go ahead and try to leave without a souvenir that's sure to take the spot of honor in your collection.

5. There is no such thing as a bad view in Turkey

Those looking to take in the sights by water or air will find no shortage of activities in Turkey, from the hot-air balloons over Capdepera to the many cruise liners than pass through many of the country's ancient ports (think: Ephesus, Kuşadası, and Izmir). If there was ever a destination that lent itself to being seen from all angles, this is the place.

Why I Love Visiting Turkey

Although I’m not that great at history I love to learn while I travel.  I’m always fascinated by historical sites, stories, cultures, traditions, and people.  I’ve been to Greece and thought nothing to possibly top all of the historical sites that I’ve seen there.  I was very wrong.  Turkey had some of the most amazing historical sites I have seen.  Everything from the library of Alexandria to the tomb of King Midas, all of it was just mind blowing; add a hot air balloon ride through the rose canyon in Cappadocia (one of the best places in the world to ride a hot air balloon) and you’ve really got yourself one heck of a trip.

Having said all that here are my top reasons for why I love Turkey and am so excited to speak there in February:

• Turkey has a lot of life and a rising technology and social media scene (which is what I’m interested in).  It’s amazing to see so many entrepreneurs in a foreign country working on trying to build something new and innovating.  When you visit Turkey you just feel a huge pulse of life.  Everyone goes out and has a great time
• The cities and sites in Turkey are also amazing.  I absolutely loved Pammukale where I had the opportunity to soak my feet in the limestone terrace pools that were overlooking a mountain.  I also saw some of the most amazing rock formations and underground cities that I have ever seen.
• The people in Turkey are very nice and welcome.  Again, Turkey is one of those places that gets a bad rap by the media but when you actually visit the country you find that people are very different.  They love conversations and are very spiritual.  I get the feeling that everyone in Turkey is wise and just eager to impart their wisdom to the world.  Turkey has a very old culture, history, and way of doing things and people really value their culture and tradition; everything from the way they pray to the type of tea they drink.
• The food in Turkey is also amazing.  I was on a guided tour while visiting Turkey and most of the food we ate on that tour was horrible.  However, once I left the guided tour to explore some of the cities on my own I was greeted with some of the best food I have ever tasted.  The kabobs and meat dishes in Turkey are heaven!

There are probably a few other things I can point out as well but not without going into details about the various cities.  If you have never been to Turkey I highly recommend that you visit, you will really be amazed at the things you will see and experience.  I can’t wait to go back!

Agriculture has a significant share of it.

It is famous for the cultivation and export of cotton, olives, fruit, grapes, tea, citrus, barley and hazelnuts.

One of my favourite places in the world is Turkey. The country fascinates me with its rich culture and not to mention Turkish food is my favourite kind!  The country has some of the most beautiful places to visit including serene beaches and mind-blowing architecture.

It is relatively easy to get to Turkey these days as Istanbul has 2 major airports, both which you can get very affordable flights onwards to the Middle East, Europe and Asia.

It is becoming a hot spot for tourists and here’s why you need to visit Turkey right now.

4 Reasons to Visit Turkey Right Now!

Diverse landscapes

Turkey really has it all. Three sides of the country are surrounded by water so you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in the world here.  The bonus is that it is still relatively quiet with not much tourist action here so you can find a spot to yourself on a beach paradise with the Mediterranean water at your feet!  If you’re not convinced yet then maybe the words crystal clear waters and pristine beaches might persuade you.

Not only are there amazing beaches but inland is so interesting and gorgeous as well. It has a very diverse landscape including the ‘Fairy Chimneys’ where there is only one way you should take it all in, a hot air balloon ride above them!

It was formed by volcanic eruptions centuries ago, I definitely think these are on the list of top wonders of the world.  Definitely take a tour with Encounters Travel to get the most out of these beautiful sites around the country!  It makes it a lot easier than hiring a car and worrying about the responsibilities that comes with it.

The Architecture and historic ruins

The cities will blow you away.  You have to discover the Mosques, especially the Blue Mosque which is the largest and most dazzling one in Istanbul.  The historic castles are also mind-boggling with every city having its own!

Hieropolis which means ‘Sacred City’ was believed to be found by the God Apollo.  The ruins of this city are simply astonishing and somewhere you have to discover when coming here.  If you liked the ruins of Rome, you’re guaranteed to love Hieropolis even more.

You will also find monasteries literally built into the mountains which is a sight in itself!  Near the black sea area is a monastery called Sumela.  It’s one of the most stunning places you can trek up to and because you’re in the area, you also could check out the seaside town Amasra, where you can take a dip in the Black Sea!

The Blue Mosque

The Turkish food

Turkish food is fresh, full of flavours and leaves you satisfied.  You could eat your way around the country which makes it attractive to the foodie travellers!

One of the best dishes you can eat while visiting Turkey is the Kahvalti. It’s kind of like Tapas for breakfast, including a selection of cheeses, tomatoes, olives, spicy sausage, bread, cucumbers, menemen (scrambled eggs with sausage and tomatoes), berry jam and Nutella.

Of course, you can’t leave out the çay which is a Turkish black tea! The Turkish love tea and have it with nearly every meal.  They do a delicious apple tea too which is very popular.

Turkish food is very meat-based. You will find a lot of different grilled meats and the famous, kebab which you most definitely need to try.  Another great dish is the Pide which is a Turkish pizza.  They usually fill it with cheese, meat and egg too.  It’s a very delicious lunch option although not very healthy!

If you are vegetarian don’t worry though.  There are a lot of dishes that are meat-free.  You can find a lot of rice as well as fresh vegetables.

A great way to learn more about food is by taking a food tour around Istanbul .   It’s a great way to learn about the country through food!

Turkish Tea

You can be in two continents at the same time!

Istanbul spreads across Asia and Europe.  Surely that is something to tick off your bucket list.  If you cross the main bridge in Instabul you can experience both continents as one side of the bridge is Europe and the other in Asia.

Turkey is number one on my list! As I’ve got extensive plans for 2016 already, I think Turkey will have to wait until 2017. But I know for a fact I wouldn’t want to miss this!

Turkey is one of the countries I have been trying to get to for the last years. For some reason, I never made it. I’d love to see the cultural heritage in the West and the beautiful landscapes and friendly people in the East. One, I’ll make it.

My Favourite Things about Turkey

This is a series of posts sharing what I liked best about the countries I have visited. Something particularly annoying might get a mention too. This will not be everything we did, just some of the memorable bits, and perhaps some useful tips. It will give you an insight as to what to expect when you visit. Here are my favourite things about Turkey.

Turkey – April 2016

With the political situation in Turkey at the moment this is an interesting post to write. We loved Turkey! I just want to tell you all to go there tomorrow!

But of course I realise many people will not travel there at the moment. I had been planning this trip for years, and only about two weeks before we flew out of Australia there was a bombing on Istikal Street in Istanbul and Australia changed it’s official travel warning for Istanbul (and Ankara) to “reconsider your need to travel”.

Neither Simon nor I wavered regarding our plans, much to the disgust of our families, workmates, and, well, anyone who knew we were going to Turkey! I did phone our travel insurance company just to check this new warning did not invalidate our insurance. All was good, so off we went.

With all that in mind, there was only one incident in our two weeks in Turkey where we felt unsafe, and it was when we saw some unattended bags in a regional airport.

It worked out they belonged to an elderly lady who was standing in line waiting to check in. She had left her baggage at the front of the line so she didn’t have to carry it. When she got to the front she picked it up and carried it only the couple of meters to the checkin counter.

Nearly everyone we met could not have been more accomodating. All of our tour guides were fantastic. They were very knowledgeable about their given locations and they were all willing to engage in casual conversation about well, anything really.

I will always remember our guide at Gallipoli who could quote nearly any Australian movie. He knew them better than me! Our greeting was “G’day mate, how’s the serenity?” He had lived in the area all his life and his parents ran a guest house.

The trek to Gallipoli has become a pilgrimage popular in recent years for Aussies both young and old. With the influx, he had become fascinated with our culture so sort out any movies, tv shows, music etc.

Particularly interesting was speaking with the Turkish people about the current situation there. Of course most of the people we spoke with were part of the tourism industry. They were all very western in their views and completely condemned not only the terrorism, but also the direction their government is trying to take their country.

Yes the population is almost entirely muslim (97%), but religion and state are separate, just like here in Australia. Most of the people we spoke identified as muslim, but “I can’t wait to get home and have a beer tonight!”. It’s just like me. I was baptised as a kid, so therefore I am a christian, but I couldn’t tell you the last time I went to church!

These people were really hurting. In April tourism was down 80% on the previous year. I’d hate to think how the people in the industry are surviving now.

The Attractions

Turkey just has so much to see! We only got to a small amount of what the country has to offer but were awestruck.

The Roman ruins of Ephesus are some of the best in the world. Pamukkale is so unique and beautiful. Cappadocia is also like no other place on Earth, and watching the sunrise from a hot air balloon was one of the best experiences I have had anywhere. The Gallipoli Peninsula is so meaningful to Australians, and it is a poignant reminder of many of the values we hold dear.

Istanbul is a modern city with so much history. Five days was not enough for us to cover all of the things we wanted to see. The great buildings, the food, the Bosphorus, the hamams, the palaces….I could go on.

We had no lineup at any of the major attractions, not even the Blue Mosque, because of the lack of tourists. The only disappointments were major renovations going on at the Aya Sophia and the Topkapi Palace meant our views of these places were restricted. They are both still impressive.

The Logistics

I didn’t find Turkey either excessively expensive or really cheap. There were some great bargains on internal flights though. Istanbul to Izmir was $25USD each on Pegasus Airlines. I had to hunt around for info on transfers, particularly from Sabiha-Gokcen Airport to Taksim. Mostly taxis were recommended, but in the end I found a transfer bus outside the terminal for a much more reasonable price.

I didn’t find the food cheap, but the amount of food was generous to say the least. By the end of our trip we were ordering one meal and sharing, which did cut the cost down.

We mostly stayed in AirBnBs, with prices around the $80-$100AUD per night range. This gave us clean, private accommodation with ensuite, wifi and breakfast that did the job. Due to our arrival time, we chose a hotel in Izmir.  (See the disaster story about our arrival here ) We stayed at the Doubletree for about $105AUD per night. No breakfast for that price!

We did a few tours in Turkey, but my favourite was with Circle Istanbul. This tour is by no means cheap, but it was a full day of seeing parts of Istanbul that aren’t on the tourist trail. It includes all three meals, a Bosphorus cruise and a visit to a traditional hamam (Turkish bath). Of course it also includes markets, and food – lots of food! By about the tenth piece of baklava I just had to say no more!

We had internet through a pocket wifi device  while we were in Turkey. For a small fee, we had unlimited internet for up to ten devices. I had arranged it in advance, and the modem was waiting for me at my first accommodation. Pickup at Ataturk airport can also be arranged. It was good for the two of us, but would have been even better value if our teenagers were with us!

There was only one day without a connection, but that was a national Vodafone outage as they swapped from 3G to 4G, not the fault of Alldaywifi. Actually, there was another connection problem, but that was because I somehow managed to totally reset the modem back to factory settings! A quick phone call to Alldaywifi and it was fixed and we were back online.

Would I Go Back?

Absolutely yes! I am already planning to visit again during our 2017 trip. This time I plan to visit Bursa, and then head down to the Antalya region on the southern coast. It will be a good time to visit as crowds will be nonexistent. I am hoping the situation does not get worse and require me to reconsider.

I’ve been three times now, and would love to return for longer. I barely scratched the surface of Gallipoli, but it was a moving and emotional experience. Istanbul for the history and the atmosphere and those great mosques. Never went much into the Asian side beyond a coach ride over the bridge.

Totally want to do the Cappadocia thing. As does my wife. We’ll be back!

I think you would like the history down at Ephesus too! I could only choose one photo, but the ruins are of almost a whole town.

Thanks for the lovely post, we have been living in Turkey (one more week and then we are off) for over a year and we couldn’t agree more with what you said (except for the not-so-cheap food, where did you eat?) The people is friendly and welcoming, the city (Istanbul) is hectic but now it has very few tourists sadly as there is a big part of the economy that needs them. I’m sure you’ll like Bursa (don’t miss the Iskender kebab there!) and hopefully Antalya is everything you wished for

LOL – we probably got charged “tourist” rates for food ? Seriously, it wasn’t that it was expensive, it was just similar to what I would expect to pay here in Australia for a meal. Once we worked out that the size of those meals were huge, came with many extras, and we didn’t need so much food, then it was cheaper. I can’t think of one thing we had that wasn’t really tasty. Would go back again just for the food!

The attractions look very inviting. And it is nice to know that the people are equally accommodating. No wonder Turkey is such a favorite amongst travelers.

Turkey is such a unique and interesting place! Hot air ballooning over Cappadocia is on my bucket list. My mom might literally have a heart attack if I went there right now, but I’ll definitely visit someday!

I visited Turkey about 17 years ago when it was a place a lot of young brits went on holiday (mostly because it was super cheap). At one point my Dad even owned a holiday home out there. It’s sad how over the years things have changed so much and its such a shame for those who rely on the tourist industry there. I hope this changes soon. Thank you for writing this post and helping to change people’s views on visiting.

Oh how I love Turkey! My parents used to take me on vacation there so many times and I have grown so fondly of the country and the people there. Nice to see some places in Turkey I haven’t visited before, makes me think of planning a trip there again.

Turkey is so diverse. I think there will always be something else to see.

Pamukkale is great! We will always remember it because there were these amazing storm clouds over us, and as we were leaving the heavens opened and we got absolutely soaked! It was almost like a mini tornado with crazy winds, but it only lasted about ten minutes. We always joke that a holiday isn’t a “real” holiday until we get rained on, and this was about the fourth day of our trip so we got it out of the way early ?

I’ve only been to Istanbul so your post has made me desperate to go back and explore more of Turkey! I agree the people are really warm and there is so much to see!

Cappadocia itself is worth a visit. We only had two full days there, but probably should have spent another two at least.

I still haven’t been to Turkey even though it has always been an extremely popular destination for Danish people – and I have only heard good things about the country. I feel sorry for the people who live of tourism. The same goes to Egypt. Its horrible how some ignorant people can do so much damage to so many people, not only short term but also long term. I’ve never been to Turkey. Istanbul has been high on the city breaks list for a while now but I’m probably too much a wimp to go at the moment. I admire your courage to get on with your trip and I’m so glad you enjoyed it. What did you think of your hammam experience?

The hammam was interesting! Once I got over the idea of being mostly naked! I went to a very traditional hammam, where none of the women working there spoke English, so there was lots of pointing at things, and pulling and pushing my arms, legs etc so I would stand, or turn, or move as needed. It seemed like half my skin was scrubbed off, but it felt lovely and soft later. Not sure if I would go back again, but it was definitely something you have to do at least once.

My Favorite Countries in the World (from a traveler who’s been to nearly 100)

What’s your favorite country?

I get asked this question all the time.

It’s the most difficult to answer. The short answer is, I don’t have one. I have many favorites. I like different places for different reasons. In no particular order, I’ll list all of my favorites.

My Favorite Countries in the World

Greece has been on my mind since I fell in love with the island of Lesvos in 2017. After leaving Greece, I couldn’t shake it from my memory. Traveling around other Mediterranean countries the thought crossed my mind “It’s nice here, but it’s certainly not Greece.” I know that’s the wrong mentality, but hey, those are my feelings, and feelings can’t be wrong, right? So apologies to lovely Albania and Malta, but if I only had one week to live, I’d be eating souvlaki and sipping a thick Greek coffee in some vine-shaded village square somewhere in the Aegean.

Malaysia is perhaps the best food country in the world . I say that because it is home to three outstanding cuisines of its diverse population. Malay, Chinese, and Indian cuisine are all readily available and because of Malaysia’s eating out culture, meals are affordably priced for locals. Much of the best food is served at mom and pop cafes or from carts at food centers. But Malaysia is more than just food. Its mix of indigenous and other cultures means different customs, holidays, religions, and so on. Plus, I love the architecture of the former Straits Settlements on peninsular Malaysia ( Penang , Malacca). On Borneo, there is some nice wildlife viewing (albeit under threat from agriculture/habitat loss)

I entered into the world of Central Asia in my early twenties as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uzbekistan. While I absolutely loved my host country and its people (perhaps the world’s most hospitable) I also grew very fond of Kyrgyzstan . It’s a land of high-altitude pastures and cool, clear lakes. One of snow-capped peaks and bubbling hot springs and people willing to invite a stranger into their yurt for a cup of fermented mare’s milk. I like Kyrgyzstan so much that I wanted to take other travelers there and now I do. If this sounds like your cup of kumis then you should join us. See my Kyrgyzstan trekking trip for more info.

I fell in love with the landscape and culture of Spain on my first Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in 2005. I returned in 2008 for another Camino (Via de la Plata) and to stay to teach English. I ended up living there for about a year, enjoying tapas and wine after work, exploring the neighborhoods of Madrid, and getting into the rhythm of the Spanish lifestyle. The typical traveler to Spain enjoys the incredible cuisine here, the diversity of the country’s distinct regions, its rich art and architectural heritage, and the history of its small cities, towns, and villages throughout the countryside.

Spain’s neighbor to the west is another of my favorite places. You can tell I have an affinity for this part of the world. Portugal’s historical towns and cities are intriguing and its coastline is delectable . Portuguese are proud but very open to outsiders and well-educated. There’s a bit of Roman history here, some top-notch winemaking, delicious food, and thought-provoking street art. But most of all for me it’s the atmosphere of Portugal that I love most, and that’s what sticks out in my memory. I just loved being there.

South Korea

I’ve been to South Korea on several occasions. I’ve taught English there, lived there temporarily on other occasions, and explored most corners of this small mountainous peninsula. Koreans have a strong identity tied to their land, cuisine, and language . There are many distinct aspects of Korean society and the Korean people are proud of their heritage . They hold on to many of their traditions while embracing change and modernity in a fast-paced world . I may be biased because I married a Korean, but this is an intelligent society with a high quality of life.

Peru is too intriguing a place not to mention in this list. What’s so great about Peru is the diversity of experiences one can have there. You can ride a dune buggy across towering dunes, admire the work of ancient pre-Incan civilizations, surf some of the Pacific’s best waves, see an enormous array of wildlife, venture into the Amazon (which makes up a third of Peru!), and take on some of the best trekking in the Andes . Eat your way through Lima , South America’s foodie city. And did I mention Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley? Enough Inca sights and Quechua culture to take a week of your time. 

I traveled for a few weeks in Syria before the civil war. What I remember most is how completely foreign everything was to me. Not even the same numbers system was used! But also I remember how welcoming people were. Syrians chatted with me, bought me lunch, and helped me find my way when I was lost. It is a country with a magnificent cultural heritage, extraordinary ruins (much of which have been destroyed in the war), a vast desert landscape, and some of the oldest inhabited cities on the planet.

The digital nomad in me fell in love with Romania and wanted to stay. Who doesn’t love affordability and lightning-fast internet ? But Romania is much more. What interests me most are the old Saxon towns and villages of Transylvania, the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains, and the folk traditions of Maramureș. Add to that some delicious Romanian food and a trip to the capital Bucharest, which has an enticing mix of architecture from numerous eras. The combination was enough for me to work remotely from Bucharest for a month and develop a small group tour to Transylvania .

The thing that everyone notices about Japan is its seamless fusion of the old and new. In addition to that, the Japanese do urban society like no one else. Japanese cities work flawlessly. They are efficient, clean, crowded, and somehow quiet. But I also love hiking in Japan’s mountains, following its pilgrim trails, soaking in its hot springs , sipping its bowls of noodles, and eating its fresh seafood catch. I am also most happy riding Japanese trains. One thing I’d like people to know is that Japan is not as expensive as they think.

There is so much packed into little Georgia : the subtropical Black Sea coast, a productive wine-country, a very intriguing and revered cuisine, ancient churches, Ottoman bathhouses, breakaway republics, mountain fortresses, and alpine hiking. One of my favorite adventures in Georgia was a trip to Svaneti, a mountainous region inhabited by the Svans, known for its stone towers. I haven’t been to Georgia since 2007, but my travels there were some of my most memorable and adventurous.

Taiwan has got a great standard of living, some of the world’s best food , easy and comfortable transportation, a rich culture, fun outdoor activities, safe cities, and very helpful and friendly residents. When you’ve got your fill of urban adventure in Taipei, head to the east coast for hiking in the mountains, soaking in hot springs, cycling through rice paddies, tasting tea, and renting a scooter for more fun. A friend invited me to stay with him in Tainan and I explored the cultural side of Taiwan, visiting lots of temples in this historic capital.

The United States

While it seems funny to list my home country after years of living and traveling outside of the USA, the diversity of geography in the world’s fourth-biggest country is staggering. I’m never a person to think “mine is best” but after traveling the world for two decades, one of my favorite places is the destination of one of my earliest vacations: the American West. The high-elevation Colorado Plateau is home to numerous National Parks, unbelievable geological land formations, dinosaur graveyards, outstanding outdoor sports, Native American cultures, and so much more. Additionally, the old-growth forests of California, Oregon, and Washington State are among the most magical places on the earth. When you’re alone, looking up in a Redwood grove, you’ll understand.

If you forced me to narrow it down to one country to call my favorite, I’d have to choose India . The diversity of this sub-continent is astonishing. You can go from crossing deserts by camel to meditating in yoga ashrams in the foothills of the Himalaya to birdwatching from boats in the backwaters of tropical Kerala. India has 122 major languages and more than 2,000 ethnic groups ! Wherever you go in India there is always something interesting to experience – and that’s why I never tire of this fascinating country. I will have never visited India enough times. 

As you can see, I have a lot of favorites. This is why the question is so difficult to answer. When I travel, I look for things to love about the place – its people, history, food, or landscape. There have been very few places I’ve left thinking that I’ve never wanted to return. Here are some additional favorites that didn’t make the first cut.

Honorable Mention:

Uzbekistan – I lived in Uzbekistan for two years and crisscrossed the country countless times. Silk Road cities, good food, and the most open and hospitable people on the planet.

Nepal – The soaring Himalaya, the magnificent Himalaya, the extraordinary Himalaya. These mountains make me cry tears of joy.

Bangladesh – I think it was a week before I saw another foreigner in Bangladesh . Bangladeshis are the most friendly and enthusiastic about meeting outsiders. This trip has remained close to my heart – from tea country to the Sundarbans Mangrove forest.

Egypt – I have great memories of adventures in Egypt in 2007. Superb diving in the Red Sea, chaotic urban adventures in Cairo and Alexandria, far-out oases, and mind-blowing archeology. 

Mongolia – The wide-open landscapes you’ve only dreamed about! Real living nomadic cultures, ancient Buddhist traditions, dinosaur bones, and an autumn golden eagle festival in Western Mongolia .

Italy – If you want the best of the best in Europe, it’s no contest. Italy is packed with world-class art and architecture, an incredible food culture, stunning medieval towns, ruins of ancient civilizations, and passionate Italians.

Tunisia – Old school backpacking adventures , incredible archeology, some really friendly people, and super-cheap prices.

Israel and the Palestinian Territories – Fascinating religious history, intriguing current events, and some of the tastiest food in the Middle East.

Mexico – A tremendous diversity of landscapes and cultures are packed into Mexico. And the food is world-renowned.

Colombia – Soaring mountains, two coastlines, coffee country, Amazon jungle, colonial villages, and the warmest people in South America. What more could you want?

China – Get lost on Planet China. The largest population on earth is home to hundreds of ethnic minorities, spectacular landscapes, and towns that rarely, if ever, see foreigners.

Bosnia & Herzegovina – East meets west in Europe. B & H is steeped in Ottoman history and Sarajevo and Mostar are two places you’ll never forget.

Bhutan – If you wanted to create a serene and peaceful sanctuary to be a Buddhist monk, don’t bother. It already exists. Welcome to Bhutan, last great Himalayan kingdom .

Poland – Although Poland suffered greatly in a World War tug of war between Germany and Russia, there are lovely historic cities here with great architecture. And my Slavic soul feels at home in Poland.

Switzerland – Besides the obvious – MOUNTAINS – Switzerland is the intersection of Romantic and Germanic Europe – making Switzerland a cultural and natural highlight of Europe.

Turkey – I spent about four weeks traveling around Turkey and there was still plenty more to see. Most travelers miss Eastern Turkey. Fascinating culture and people that take food very seriously.

Myanmar – Super friendly people, beautiful landscapes, and Bagan. You may not like the government, but you’ll love everything else about Myanmar. Experience the best of Myanmar on my good friend’s Un-Tour to Myanmar .

The United Kingdom – After traveling in Asia and Europe so much I appreciate being able to connect with people in the UK with the same mother tongue.

Future Favorite Countries – Places I haven’t been to yet

I’m sure there are plenty of future favorite countries out there that I just don’t know yet. The way travelers talk about some countries make me want to drop what I’m doing and book a ticket. High on my list are Iran, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Morocco, Uganda, Lesoto, Rwanda, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. I could include many more on this list.

My Favourite Country- Turkey

  Turkey country of my dreams

  My most favorite country is Turkey. Since childhood, I have loved this country. I absolutely love its geographical location, culture, language, and natural beauty. Turkey is my dream destination, and I would absolutely love to settle there one day. It is one of the top tourist countries in the world. Millions of tourists visit Turkey every year and have the best time of their life.

Turkey is famous for its natural beauty too. It has the most beautiful beaches, mountains, and deserts. I personally love beaches like I would love to sit and watch the beauty of the Bosphorous every single day. It is a country that has places like heaven on Earth. You must have heard of Bodrum, Antalya, and many beautiful places like Cappadocia, etc. I would love to visit them all one day.
