Academic & Research

We aim to benefit humanity through our research, find out if you want to be part of something big and start a career with us, oxford in your day.

Demystifying Oxford: Academic Hiring at the Faculty of Law, March 2, 2021

At the heart of our success is our ground breaking research and innovation. Do you want to be part of an organisation that changes peoples lives? Do you want to make a difference?

We are committed to disciplinary excellence - across the medical sciences; the mathematical, physical and life sciences; the social sciences; and the humanities - and interdisciplinary research that will benefit society on a local, national and global scale. This requires extensive collaboration with leading university networks, public agencies and businesses in the UK and internationally.

We aim to maximise the benefits of our research by advancing fundamental knowledge, tackling major societal and technological challenges, and contributing to better public policy, improved health outcomes, economic prosperity, social cohesion, international development, community identity, the arts, culture and quality of life.

Research carried out by Oxford's staff, students and alumni has made an enormous impact on the world over the centuries. The impact of some research is evident immediately, whereas in other cases it can take years, or even decades, before the true value becomes apparent. There are no simple predictors of potential benefit or outcomes, and no single measure of impact. This is where the funding from research councils and charities is vital in supporting research which increases our fundamental understanding of the world and allows us to apply that improved knowledge.

If you are passionate about making a difference and would like to play a part in our world-leading research, come and join us.

Job titles for researchers are determined by departmental employing authorities. Most researchers' job descriptions are generic and therefore have a degree of flexibility and adaptability incorporated into them.

A researcher should be given a summary project plan, provided by the principal investigator or supervisor. This plan should clarify what the researcher is expected to contribute to the research project. It is recognised that these expectations may change as the researcher settles into the role.

Research Assistant (grade 5)

For researchers who are educated to first degree level and who possess sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within their own area. Role holders who gain their doctorate during the course of employment will normally be recommended for promotion to research associate, if this is appropriate for the duties and responsibilities of the post. Promotion is not automatic and depends upon the role holder fulfilling all the duties of the role of research associate.

Research Associate (grade 7)

For researchers with some research experience who have normally have been awarded a doctoral degree. Their research activity will provide substantial scope for academic judgment, originality, interpretation and presentation of results. Research Associates will often have supervisory responsibilities for more junior researchers and may well exercise full authority over many aspects of project work. For appointments at the level of research associate the Department may use the title of 'fellow' where this is a condition of the sponsor's award.

Senior Research Associate (grade 9)

For researchers with at least three years' experience as a postdoctoral Research Associate, or equivalent. Most Senior Research Associates will have full operational responsibility for a major project or research facility and some may hold research grants in their own right. They will have demonstrated a high level of competence and an independent standing as researchers. Appointment as a Senior Research Associate requires the approval of the relevant Faculty Board (or equivalent body). For appointments at the level of senior research associate the Department may use the title of 'fellow' where this is a condition of the sponsor's award.

Principal Research Associate (PRA) (grade 11)

This appointment is at a level equivalent to Reader. (A generic role profile for Readers is available on the Human Resources Division website.)

Researchers may be considered for promotion to or may be recruited to PRA under the University's procedures. The criteria and evaluative standards used for appointment at this level are those specified in the guidance on the senior academic promotions scheme and these appointments will be reported to the University's Human Resources Committee. Where a post arises out of a national scheme run by a major research sponsor, any title associated with that post may be used.

Director of Research (DoR) in (field of research) in the Faculty/Department, etc, of X. (grade 12)

This appointment is at a level equivalent to Professor. A generic role profile for Professors is available on the Human Resources website.

Researchers may be considered for promotion to or may be appointed on recruitment to DoR under the University's procedures. The criteria and evaluative standards used for appointment at this level are those specified in the guidance on the senior academic promotions scheme and these appointments will be reported to the University's Human Resources Committee. The Senior Academic Promotions Scheme is outlined on the Human Resources website.

Research Jobs in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Research Jobs in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Here we look at the types of academic research jobs in electrical and electronic engineering, typical career paths in the sector and opportunities for progression.

Electrical and electronic engineering research finds solutions to global challenges and problems.  From healthcare to wireless communications, research in this field leads to the development of ground-breaking technology which has an impact on every area of our lives.

Working as an Electrical and Electronic Engineering Researcher

Electrical and electronic engineering research is a fast-moving, multidisciplinary field bringing together academics and experts from engineering, digital technology, physical sciences and industry backgrounds.

The research job you apply for could be highly specific to the expertise gained during your PhD. Or you could be working as an electrical engineer in industry and can bring hands-on skills and knowledge to research projects.

Career Path

You’ll need to have a very good first degree in electrical and electronic engineering and a PhD in an area related to the research projects you wish to be involved in, such as digital electronics or telecommunications.

Equivalent professional experience working as an electrical engineer in industry may also be acceptable, depending on the project and area of research.

On completion of your PhD, your next step would be to secure a postdoctoral research role on a project related to your knowledge and expertise. After gaining experience, you could choose to combine your research with teaching duties in a lecturing role or continue on a research-oriented path as a research fellow or associate.

UK universities generally have established academic career pathways which are structured to guarantee promotion after a fixed period. Promotion would depend on the successful completion of a number of research projects.

Where to find jobs

You’ll find electrical and electronic engineering research jobs in a varied range of specialisms and activities. Universities, governments and industry compete to be world leaders in the development of new technology and want to attract the best and most up-to-date research talent, particularly in areas such as sustainable energy development and digital technologies.

There are research jobs available in universities, global research and development facilities or government bodies. Availability of research roles is project and funding-dependent. You can find out more about how electrical and electronic engineering research and development is funded in the UK and how projects might fit your background and knowledge at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) .

If you choose to work as a researcher at a university, here are some of the roles you may come across during your search:

  • Project engineer
  • Postdoctoral researcher/assistant/fellow
  • Research technician
  • Research Fellow or Associate
  • Research Software Engineer
  • Senior research associate/fellow
  • Lecturer/senior lecturer in electrical and electronic engineering

Find electrical and electronic engineering academic research jobs here .

A typical day for an electrical and electronic engineering researcher will of course depend on the area involved. You may be working in laboratory testing motor control systems or microelectronics, or you may be collaborating with industry partners at specialist sites in the UK or abroad.

However, most research posts are structured as follows:

  • Creating and conducting experiments in a laboratory or technical environment
  • Data analysis and publication of results
  • Collaborating with scientists and engineers in universities, industry and research institutes around the world
  • Working within multi-disciplinary teams to design, test and develop technology
  • Drawing up research proposals and applying for funding
  • Carrying out practical demonstrations for undergraduate and postgraduate students

Salaries in engineering research vary depending on the field and specific research activities of the university. However, as a general rule, postdoctoral researchers and research associates can expect to start on a salary of around £30,000 to £39,999 p.a.

Academic research jobs are project and funding driven, so contracts are usually offered on a temporary, fixed-term basis.

PhD Studentships

If you’re just finishing your undergraduate or Master’s degree in electrical and electronic engineering, you may be considering a PhD. Doctoral research is ideal for engineering graduates who are looking towards an academic career or those who wish to discover more about a specific field before embarking on a career in industry.

There is a wide range of PhD studentships available in electrical and electronic engineering. A PhD takes around 3-5 years to complete, and most are fully funded and come with a stipend in the range of £15,000 and £17,000 p.a.

You can find current PhD studentships in fields related to electrical and electronic engineering here .

Foreign states targeting sensitive research at UK universities, MI5 warns

Ministers considering more funding to protect important research sites, with China seen as a particular concern

MI5 has warned universities that hostile foreign states are targeting sensitive research, as ministers consider measures to bolster protections.

Vice-chancellors from 24 leading institutions, including Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London , were briefed on the threat by the domestic security service’s director general, Ken McCallum, and National Cybersecurity Centre (NCSC) chief, Felicity Oswald.

In addition, the UK government is looking at increased funding to improve security at sensitive sites. Oliver Dowden, the deputy prime minister, announced plans for a consultation on a package of measures that could include looking at key university personnel being given security clearance and a strengthened process to improve the transparency of funding, particularly with foreign institutions.

The measures will be focused on a small proportion of academic work, with a particular focus on research with potential dual uses in civilian and military life.

McCallum told the vice-chancellors that hostile states are targeting universities to steal technology that can “deliver their authoritarian, military and commercial priorities”, the Times reported.

The government ordered a review of protections for higher education in its refreshed foreign and security policy last year amid concerns that hostile states – and particularly China – were gaining undue influence over the sector.

Dowden has previously warned that some universities’ reliance on overseas funding could leave them open to being “influenced, exploited, or even coerced” by a foreign power.

After the security briefing, Dowden said: “For a millennium, our universities have thrived on being open – open to ideas, open to innovation, open to being independent of government.

“This is not about erecting fences, this is about balancing evolving threats and protecting the integrity and security of our great institutions.”

The consultation will explore proposals to protect cutting-edge technology under development in sensitive sectors that are being targeted by states intent on stealing intellectual property to enhance their own economic and military capabilities.

The NCSC and the National Protective Security Authority have also launched a tool to help universities assess their research security.

Michelle Donelan, the science and technology secretary, said: “I believe that universities are on the frontlines of a battle for information.

“Maintaining the UK’s world-leading reputation as an academic superpower relies on having strong safeguards to protect research from those who wish to do us harm.”

Tim Bradshaw, chief executive of the Russell Group of leading research universities, said: “Russell Group universities take their national security responsibilities incredibly seriously and already work closely with government and the intelligence community to help protect UK breakthroughs in fields like AI, which are important to our national interest.

“But we also recognise security is a dynamic and evolving challenge which means we need the right expertise and intelligence to keep pace with this.”

Universities UK chief executive Vivienne Stern said: “For several years, Universities UK has worked with government to ensure that universities are supported and equipped to recognise and mitigate risks to national security.

“This is important and necessary, and we welcome the government’s approach to working hand in hand with us to get the mechanisms right.”

An online Ph.D. program or doctorate can offer many compelling features for students, but it might not be the right choice for everyone. Consider the questions below when deciding whether to pursue your doctorate online or in person.

  • What type of schedule do you need? Online programs typically offer more flexibility that appeals to students who work full time or have personal responsibilities to fit around their school schedule. Online degrees allow learners to pursue higher education without putting their career on hold. This is especially true for programs that offer asynchronous coursework that students complete on their own time.
  • What learning style works best for you? Do you work well independently and with a lot of freedom? If so, an online doctorate might be a good fit for you. If you think you’d prefer the camaraderie of an in-person cohort graduate program and structured opportunities to interact with instructors, an on-campus or hybrid program might suit you better.
  • How does the program format affect your budget? Online programs can help you save on tuition, housing and transportation costs. For example, many public schools allow you to pay the same tuition, regardless of where you live. However, you might miss funding opportunities typically reserved for on-campus students, such as graduate teaching assistantships, research assistantships and fellowships.

The U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) approve accrediting agencies that give schools institutional accreditation in the U.S.

Institutional accreditation means that a university has met minimum quality requirements related to its academics, financial management, faculty and staff, and student resources and services. To qualify for federal financial aid, you must attend an accredited college.

Programmatic accreditation is a separate process that gives special recognition to individual degrees, programs or departments within a university. Depending on your field, you might need a programmatically accredited degree to get a job or qualify for professional licenses or certifications.

You can search for a prospective school’s accreditation status on CHEA’s website .

Consider Your Future Goals

An online doctorate has the potential to help you achieve your career aspirations. However, not every program in your field will necessarily align with your goals. Before you choose an online doctorate program, think about your post-graduation plans.

For example, some online doctorate programs require professional experience through an internship or a practicum. This type of hands-on learning can help you develop your expertise and professional network. But these experiences usually take place in person and can be hard to fit into your schedule if you’re working full time.

You should also consider if you need a specific license or certification to get the job you want. If so, research the credential’s requirements to learn if your degree needs to meet certain criteria. For example, you may need to complete an accredited program or complete supervised clinical hours.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Tuition rates for online doctoral programs in our guide vary significantly, from $265 to $2,137 per credit. Most programs required 42 to 60 credits, with some exceptions. In total, the degrees ranked on our list cost between $9,540 and $113,400.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics , grad students at private, nonprofit schools paid an average tuition of $20,408 in 2022–23, while public school tuition cost $11,554 per year. Doctorate programs typically take at least three years to complete, putting total costs between $34,662 and $61,224.

Find funding for your online Ph.D. by filling out the FAFSA®, which can connect you with scholarships, grants and student loans. Many schools also provide funding to graduate students through scholarships, grants and fellowships.

Can you do a Ph.D. fully online?

Yes, many schools offer fully online Ph.D. programs. However, depending on the program and the field of study, you may need to complete on-campus residencies or field experiences like internships or practicums that take place in person.

What is the fastest Ph.D. to get online?

Program length for online Ph.D. programs varies depending on your field of study. You might be able to find some accelerated online Ph.D. programs that you can finish in less than two years. However, the best online doctoral programs on our list take at least three years to complete.

Are online doctoral degrees respected?

An online doctoral degree from an accredited university can provide the same rigorous education and training as a comparable on-campus program. If you’re concerned about whether or not your degree will be respected, consider doing some research about the way that your field or profession tends to view online doctoral degrees.

What is the best online school for a Ph.D.?

The best online school for a Ph.D. depends on your field of study, personal interests and career goals. Make sure that any prospective online school is institutionally accredited. Depending on the degree you want to pursue, it might also be important to find a program with separate programmatic accreditation.

Green Futures 2024: Event Recap, Insights into the Green Jobs Market, and Opportunities and Resources for Students

Posted on behalf of: Careers and Entrepreneurship Last updated: Saturday, 27 April 2024

research jobs in uk universities

Following on from its successful launch last year, the second edition of Green Futures took place on the 16 April.

This flagship event is designed to provide students with a better understanding of the green jobs market, and the opportunity to meet inspirational speakers and gain real-world experience. 100 students from degree subjects across the entire university – from law and journalism to life sciences and engineering – took part.

We welcomed 12 incredible speakers from organisations including  FareShare Sussex & Surrey ,  Brighton & Hove City Council ,  Knepp Wildland Foundation ,  South Downs National Park Authority ,  Rampion Offshore Wind  and more. Many of our speakers were Sussex Alumni, and it was wonderful to welcome them back to share their experiences and insights into the growing green jobs market.

Below is an event recap including insights into the green jobs market, and opportunities and resources for students. This information can also be accessed in the form of an  Insights Booklet via CareerHub.

Industry Insights

We welcomed a panel of professionals from across several diverse organisations to discuss opportunities in the growing green jobs market. Below are the main takeaways from the panel:

Routes into green jobs

Our panellists shared insights into how they built their careers in sustainability. Libby Drew , Director of the Knepp Wildland Foundation, studied English and Philosophy at university, and spent twenty years working in humanitarian aid, development and climate journalism before moving into rewilding. Meanwhile,  Laura Ong  studied Chemical Engineering at university, then joined the RWE graduate programme which led to her current role as Operations Engineer at Rampion Offshore Wind.

From developing your volunteering experience, to applying for graduate schemes – there are a diverse range of routes into sustainability-focused careers. However, there is one common thread: there is no requirement to study a sustainability-focused degree to have a green career.

“Soon, all jobs will have a green aspect. At some point, everyone here will work on a job that at least touches on the green transition” –  Jasper Ladd , Analyst, Genesis Analytics

The future is bright, and green jobs are proliferating in every industry. Sustainable thinkers are needed in every single job function. Franziska Petersen, who manages marketing and communications for Edwards Vacuum in the semiconductor industry, noted that sustainability goals are needed not just in how products are sourced and manufactured, but also in how they are marketed.

“A lot of employers are hiring sustainability managers for the first time. I would see that as an opportunity to come into their environment with the attitude of making that role your own, and bringing your personal expertise to the table" –  Cheyenne Plant , Sustainability Project Officer, Brighton and Hove City Council

Skills needed for green jobs

The green jobs market is constantly expanding and evolving. As a result, Jan Knowlson, Biodiversity officer at South Downs National Park Authority, emphasise the importance of “super generalists” in addition to people with specialisms. Engineers and process thinkers are important, but equally so are people with a general appetite for experimentation, risk, and a solutions-focussed attitude.

Our panellists agreed that transferable skills such as versatility, adaptability and creativity are vital to green jobs. Adaptability is essential, as the industry is fast-changing. Another important skill is stakeholder management, which involves being confident with people, making connections, and collaborating.

Interesting areas to research

  • Climate adaption  is a huge part of the burgeoning green jobs market. Industries are increasingly looking at the climate crisis with the knowledge that some of its effects cannot be reverse, and therefore they are increasingly looking at how cities and industry practices can be adapted to the changes that are already locked in.
  • Local knowledge  is also becoming increasingly important to biodiversity-related roles. There are many job opportunities in rural areas outside of cities to help preserve and protect local wildlife and biodiversity.
  • Law  is an exciting area where lots of change is taking place. From ‘polluter pays’ legislation and carbon pricing legal frameworks, to ensuring nature is granted rights and protection, there are many ways in which law practitioners are increasingly focusing on sustainability.

No matter your degree discipline, you have the power to make an impact in the green jobs market. New opportunities are increasingly available, and soon, most or all jobs will have a green element to them. There are many diverse career entry routes to choose from: graduate schemes, volunteering, and building your experience in a multitude of areas can all help you break into the sector. Transferable skills, such as creativity and adaptability, are just as important as specialist knowledge.

Tackling live sustainability challenges

“My group worked on the Knepp Wildland Foundation challenge to aid the development of the real-life Weald to Waves initiative which is facilitating a connected corridor of farms, gardens, and green spaces over 100 miles of Sussex landscape.

“Our team discussed the challenges and opportunities to get a variety of stakeholders to join and remain part of the corridor scheme, along with what measurable social and environmental indicators could be used to track the success of the corridor. Some of our suggestions focused on younger generations and how we could harness the power of social media and partner up with an interactive app to develop a community of nature lovers.

"We also focused on the growing issue regarding the lack of opportunity for young farmers and devised support groups and pen-pal programmes that could strengthen future operations of green farming within the South Downs.”

Tips from Sussex alumni

A key takeaway from the panel was the importance of making the most of LinkedIn. You can use your LinkedIn profile to connect and network with people in green jobs that are of interest to you; to follow green businesses; and to keep up to date on news and trends in the sector. Building your LinkedIn profile can also be really important for creating a positive impression - consider writing posts reflecting on news stories, or sharing information about events you've attended (such as Green Futures!).

Here are some other key pieces of advice from our student panellists:

“Networking can be scary, but I found my current job through networking. You also don’t need to find your dream job on the first try” -  Sandra Juan   (Sustainable Development MSc)

“I was elected to the sustainability committee at the Students Union and did a lot of other jobs, like working in a bookstore and being a student connector. All of these contributed and helped me to build my skills to help me get my current role. All kinds of experiences count: it’s about having a holistic experience” -  Urja Choudhury (Environment, Development and Policy MA)

“If you want to join any sector, the easiest way if through volunteering or internships. Even if you have a lot of experience already, you can get a different perspective” -  Anand Darshan (Project Management BSc)

“When I was at university I worked doing calling campaigns, and before I started with my current company, I was volunteering with the Brighton refugee and trauma service. Both helped me to build experience and work with teams. It can be tough to find jobs currently, but try to gain experience in any sector and start from there” -  Phumiphat Prapakamol (International Relations and Chinese BA)

“Career Lab programmes helped me to work out what I wanted to do. I spent four years at university writing reports and doing research for my degree. After the Student Consultancy Programme, I stepped into a professional consultancy and research-based role” -  Emily Albon   (Business and Management Studies BSc with a professional placement year)
