When producing this section, your writing style can be more informal compared to the rest of your thesis. This includes writing in first person and using more emotive language. Although in most cases you will have complete freedom in how you write this section of your thesis, it is still highly advisable to keep it professional. As mentioned earlier, this is largely because it will be one of the first things your assessors will read, and so it will help set the tone for the rest of your work.

In terms of its structure, acknowledgements are expected to be ordered in a manner that first recognises the most formal support before moving onto the less formal support. In most cases, this follows the same order that we have outlined in the ‘Who Should I Thank’ section.

When thanking professionals, always write out their full name and provide their title. This is because although you may be on a first-name basis with them, those who read your thesis will not. By providing full names and titles, not only do you help ensure clarity, but it could also indirectly contribute to the credibility of your thesis should the individual you’re thanking be well known within your field.

If you intend to include a list of people from one institution or organisation, it is best to list their names in alphabetical order. The exception to this is when a particular individual has been of significant assistance; here, it would be advisable to list them.

How Long Should My Acknowledgements Be?

Acknowledgements vary considerably in length. Some are a single paragraph whilst some continue for up to three pages. The length of your acknowledgement page will mostly depend on the number of individuals you want to recognise.

As a general rule, try to keep your acknowledgements section to a single page. Although there are no word limits, creating a lengthy acknowledgements section dilutes the gratitude you’re trying to express, especially to those who have supported you the most.

Where Should My Acknowledgements Go?

In the vast majority of cases, your acknowledgements should appear directly after your abstract and before your table of contents.

However, we highly advise you to check your university guidelines as a few universities set out their own specific order which they will expect you to follow.

Phrases to Help You Get Started

We appreciate how difficult it can be to truly show how grateful you are to those who have supported you over the years, especially in words.

To help you get started, we’ve provided you with a few examples of sentences that you can complete or draw ideas from.

Irrespective of this, references to any individual, department or university have been removed for the sake of privacy.

Thesis acknowledgements: Samples and how to write your own thesis or dissertation acknowledgements

Writing a thesis can be tricky. That’s why I’m starting a new series covering each section of the thesis, from thesis acknowledgements all the way to conclusions. I’ll be guiding you through the whole process, from what to include in your thesis to how to write it, along with examples from defended theses to help you to write your own.

We’ll begin by covering thesis acknowledgments. The acknowledgements section appears at the start of the thesis so it is often one of the first parts that everyone tries to tackle. As this will likely be your first taste of your thesis it can often feel quite intimidating to write!

Thankfully it’s also one of the easiest parts of the thesis to complete, which may help to give you a boost for the rest.

In this post we’ll cover everything to do with thesis acknowledgements: samples, what to include and how to write them. At the end I’ll also outline a 60 minute exercise which will get you preparing a first draft of your own! I’ve also got a similar post to craft your thesis title, which you can check out here .

I’m writing this post with a PhD thesis in mind but it could work just as well if you’re looking for help including acknowledgements in your Master’s or undergraduate thesis/ dissertation.

What is the purpose of the acknowledgements section in a thesis?

The acknowledgements section of your thesis is an opportunity to reflect on the people who have supported and shaped your PhD experience.

Don’t worry, although your examiners will be interested to read your acknowledgements section, you won’t really get judged on it in your PhD viva. This section is for you to share as little, or as much, as you want about everyone involved in your PhD journey.

The acknowledgements are a very personal section of your thesis and each PhD student will have different things they want to include. For example, many people wonder: How do I thank my family in a thesis? And the acknowledgements section is the answer!

Note – You can also use a thesis dedication to thank your family. This is a separate section to your thesis acknowledgements and is entirely optional. It’s usually just a single line, just like you might find at the front of some books. Most people don’t include a separate dedication section but you can if you want to go that extra step.

What to include in your thesis acknowledgements

There are usually no formal requirements dictating what to include in your acknowledgements. However, do double check for any potential rules at your specific institution.

In general the acknowledgements are the section of your thesis where you have some creative liberty and are not bound by rigid research protocols or guidelines.

Many students choose to use the acknowledgements section to thank people (or organisations) who:

• Introduced them to the topic
• Helped with their PhD application
• Funded the project
• Supervisors
• Technicians
• Partners, friends or family
• Or anyone else who made an impression along the way!

But remember, you can include whatever you want! For example in my own PhD acknowledgements, which you’ll read further down this post, I thanked the university for providing a green outdoor space for us.

Acknowledge whoever and whatever influenced your own PhD experience.

You may find it helpful to start by writing a list of everyone you wish to thank.

How do you write an acknowledgements section?

Since there are no guidelines to worry about, it is really up to you how you write your own thesis acknowledgements. You have a lot of freedom for what to include and how to write it.

However you may find the following suggested phases helpful as a starting point.

Who you want to thank…

• “First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to…”
• “I must thank…”
• “A special thanks to…”
• “I would like to highlight two truly exceptional people from…”
• “I want to thank…”
• “In addition, I would like to mention”
• “I would also like to extend my thanks to…”
• “I want to give my deepest appreciation to…”
• “Finally, but the most importantly, I would like to thank…”

…then, why you want to thank them

It can be nice to also include why you’re thanking these people, using phrases such as:

• “…for the opportunity to be a part of this project”
• “…for always being there when I needed his support, reviewing my progress constantly, and guiding me through my PhD studies”
• “….for being a great bunch of people in and out of the lab”
• …”for all the guidance, support and outstanding feedback”
• “… who took their time to help teach me…”
• “…for her unlimited support and unconditional guidance during my PhD journey”
• “…were always there for discussions about anything that I was unsure on”
• “…whom has offered invaluable advice that will benefit me throughout my life”
• “…for supporting me since my undergraduate, and for the valuable discussions we had along the road”
• “…for making the past 4 years much more enjoyable and keeping me sane throughout the whole process”

Here is a whole example from an accepted PhD thesis:

Some people will choose to use full names and titles for any professional acknowledgements and first names for any personal ones. Again, this is up to you.

To help illustrate the variety of thesis acknowledgement formats, we’ll shortly be coming on to some examples of acknowledgment sections from successfully defended theses.

Before then I want to cover some of the main questions relating to how to write your own thesis acknowledgements section:

How long should you spend writing your thesis acknowledgements?

My suggestion is to spend only an hour or two making a first draft. I suggest doing this well ahead of your final deadline so that you have time to come back to it. Even so, I’d certainly look to spend far less than one day’s work on it in total.

It is a “nice to have” and means a lot to a lot of people, but remember you’re really only writing this section for yourself. I probably spent about two hours writing mine in total, simply because it wasn’t a priority for me.

What order should you write your acknowledgements in?

A typical way to write your acknowledgements is to go from the most formal/academic relationships to the least.

It is normal to start with any funding bodies, then formal people like your PhD supervisors, then move through labmates, friends and family. But again, there are generally no rules!

How long should the acknowledgements section be?

You can include as much or as little as you want. My own PhD acknowledgements section was just under a page long and it consisted of 386 words or 1892 characters (without spaces).

Here is how it was formatted:

But let’s not just look at my thesis. Using Imperial’s publicly accessible database I went through 25 published PhD theses for you.

The average (mean) length of these 25 theses was 365 words and 1793 characters without spaces. Writing an acknowledgements section of length 350-450 words was the most common:

The shortest acknowledgements sections was 122 words(653 characters) long. The longest one consisted of 1022 words and 5082 characters. Hopefully this illustrates that you’re not really bound by any limits. Write as much or as little as you want for this section.

My top tips for writing your own thesis acknowledgements

• Don’t spend too long on them. The acknowledgements section is really not worth spending too much time on. Even worse, since they appear at the start of your thesis, it is tempting to write your acknowledgements first. This can be fine, or, it can be an opportunity for lots of unnecessary procrastination. Which I why I instead suggest that you…
• Write your acknowledgements at the end of your first draft of the thesis. There is no need to write your thesis in the order it is presented. If you write your acknowledgements at the end you’ll be less likely to spend precious time on a section which really doesn’t warrant too much brain power.
• Don’t stress about it. The acknowledgements are merely for yourself and for anyone close to you that you want to thank. There are far more important sections for you to be particular about!
• Remember: You can make changes after you submit the copy for your viva. As with everything in your thesis, you can make changes after you submit the thesis for your viva. The real “final” copy is when you submit your thesis to the university for archiving. Which is even more reason to not spend too much time writing it the first time around.

Draft your own thesis or dissertation acknowledgements in 60 minutes

Hopefully you now feel inspired to start writing your own thesis acknowledgments!

For the exercise below I’d suggest setting a stop-watch on your phone and move on to the next section when the alarm goes, even if you’ve not fully finished. The aim is to have a rough draft at the end which you can polish off at a later point in time.

• Read a few of the example thesis acknowledgements above to get a feel for the structure ( 15 mins )
• List everyone (or everything!) you wish to thank – including any personal and professional acknowledgements in addition to funding bodies if relevant ( 10 mins )
• Decide on a rough order in which to thank them ( 5 mins )
• Craft some sentences using the phrases mentioned above ( 30 mins )

Congratulations you’re now well on your way to having one section of your PhD thesis completed!

What is a Dissertation Acknowledgement?

An acknowledgement section of your thesis will include a personal thank you to anyone who has helped you along your writing process. This could include personal relations, like a partner or a friend. More commonly, a dissertation acknowledgement will focus on academic help that you’ve had along the way. From professors to lab technicians, this is your moment to give thanks for the hard work everyone has put in.

From actively helping in your project by providing guidance or proofreading to maybe just being there when you needed it, friends go a long way. Be sure to name-drop those that were there for you.

One important factor to take into account is that if you have received any funding, you should credit them as well. Even if it’s only one sentence, it’s important to pay thanks to the benefactors of your project.

Consider concluding with, “I give additional thanks to X Foundation, which granted me the opportunity to undertake this study”. This also applies to the university that you’re working under, it’s always a good idea to give thanks to your own institution.

These are slightly more formal requirements, but will almost always appear in professional dissertation acknowledgement examples for this reason.

Personal Acknowledgements in a Dissertation

Your thesis also provides an opportunity to acknowledge your close circle, giving thanks to the important people in your life who got you through it. Although writing a master’s thesis, PhD thesis, or dissertation thesis is an academic process, the mental side also requires support.

Take this as an opportunity to thank the people who made the process any easier for you. Once again, it’s unlikely that you did the whole process in complete isolation. Even if these people didn’t actively help with your work, it’s important to note that they could have helped on the mental side.

From taking a break to go for a drink with your friends to talking through the emotional weight of completing your dissertation project with your partner, being around people can help in more ways than one. If you benefitted from their help, be sure to thank:

No dissertation is ever finished in a vacuum. There are many individuals to thank, from those who read your work to academic supervisors who assisted you through the project. After a long writing process, your supervisor is likely to know you by your first name. To credit them, though, it’s best to include their complete name and title. The length of acknowledgements varies greatly. Some areas short as a single paragraph, while others are as long as three pages. The length of your recognition page will mostly be determined by the number of people you wish to thank. Try to restrict your acknowledgements section to one page as a general guideline. Even though there is no word restrictions, a long acknowledgements section dilutes the thankfulness you’re attempting to show, especially to those who have aided you the most.

Your acknowledgements should, in the great majority of circumstances, come after your abstract and before your table of contents. However, we strongly urge you to examine your university’s standards, as some universities have their own set of rules that you must observe.

• Do check if the university has provided guidelines to write an acknowledgement
• Do Make sure that you include individuals who directly helped you in the process.
• Do keep the tone informal and personal.
• Do use the full name and appropriate titles and qualifications.

I’ve seen that a surprising percentage of students submit proposal draughts with the acknowledgements section fully prepared. “The more portions I do now, the less I’ll have to do later,” we imagine the reasoning goes. It’s also understandable that filling up a part that doesn’t require any citations is appealing.

While there’s nothing wrong with planning out your acknowledgements section ahead of time, it’s preferable to store it apart from your proposal document. Your Chair and committee members may find it weird to be acknowledged before they’ve finished assisting you through the dissertation process, as acknowledgements are intended to be written retroactively.

It’s pointless to use your prologue and acknowledgement in your thesis at the same time. What is the best way to make this decision? Write a prologue if you wish to express gratitude and give readers further information. Write your thesis acknowledgement if you don’t have enough room.

• Before you begin writing, make a list of anybody who is linked to your project in any way. Some of them will read or edit your work, while others will listen to your academic problems or support you regularly. Mention friends or family members who are pursuing graduate degrees.

I recommend that you take your time and reflect on the people that assisted you in completing your journey and express your gratitude to them. How to make an acknowledgment sample

There are people worth mentioning in an acknowledgment sample, and this usually refers to those who have helped the person during the course of his work. The people to mention not only include those who gave their support technically but also financially and emotionally. Cite only those who have substantially contributed to your efforts. Here are some guidelines for when you write an acknowledgment for project:

• Use the right tone A formal document usually has an acknowledgment page found in the end page. Try to avoid personal thoughts which aren’t appropriate, especially if the document deals with a very technical subject. Rather, you can write the acknowledgment in such a manner that it would sound professional. Do this by making it short and more informal compared the other parts of your work. Be specific when talking about those people who supported you in your work. Put a lot of thought into this portion of your document. There are also some cases where the people who helped you would feel uncomfortable if their support is less emphasized over the others. To dismiss this thought, simply list the names alphabetically. This is perfectly acceptable.
• You may also begin with the people who have contributed the most Thanking your mentors is, of course, very important. But you need to start with those people who helped you most in your work. For instance, if you’ve written a thesis, you can mention your thesis adviser or some major professor who has overseen your project first. Next will be the thesis committee members and the other supervising teachers who have directly helped with your project . If a group of people helped you, it’s best to acknowledge them as a group. This is far better than enumerating all of them one at a time. Remember that your acknowledgment sample shouldn’t be too long. However, if you were a part of a smaller committee, it is more customary and prudent to thank every member for their contribution.
• Don’t forget the other people who helped you The lower echelon of researchers and helpers follow, especially if their contributions were as important. Assistants, classmates, and anyone else who helped with your work will also be worth mentioning.
• Cite any financial aid that you received Many school projects get some sort of financial assistance to help in their funding. This especially applies to those who don’t have the resources to conduct their studies. They can get the funding they need through foundations or research groups in the form of grants, scholarships or fellowships. Therefore, it’s fitting to thank these organizations by their names and provide a list of the personal contacts you might have had with them.
• Place the more personal thank you messages and the emotional supporters in the last part In your acknowledgment example, your personal appreciation for relatives and friends should come last. Of course, this doesn’t mean they contributed the least, but such contributions are usually more personal rather than substantial. There’s no need to mention romances as these types of relationships can change as the years go by. Keep your love life out of the page. There’s always that possibility that it will not last. For formality, also avoid inside jokes and personal anecdotes, especially in an academic acknowledgment page.

In books and other written work, you can usually find the acknowledgment for project page at the front, after the inside cover page. Acknowledgments aren’t governed by any rules on who to include. Generally, though, the usual people to include in the acknowledgment sample are:

• Editors These people clean up and correct any errors that you might have missed. They are the fine finishers of written works. Authors should always spare a moment to publicly express their appreciation to the editor’s finishing touches on their manuscripts. • Publishers They publish the book. What else is there to say?
• The members of your family These may include your parents, your siblings, your spouse or your children who lend their support while you wrote the book or made the project.
• Your sources Professionals have the opportunity in the acknowledgment to thank all those who did research work or provided important information that is now part of their work. For instance, you wrote a book which dealt with forensic science. • Ideally, the speech should only be up to 2 minutes long To achieve this, make sure that you have prepared beforehand a complete list of all the people who have contributed to your success. Remember that you’re speaking in front of an audience who can get bored with long speeches or who don’t want to hear all of the names of people they don’t know. Mention the most important influencers and keep your speech short.
• Prioritize the people who will be at the event Not all those people who have helped you with your work would attend the presentation. If there are time constraints to your appearance, give priority in mentioning the names of those who are there. Doing this can make the gesture more emotional and significant.
• You can use short anecdotes in your speech Injecting an anecdote to emphasize a point can be helpful to your speech. Choose the anecdote judicially and consider one which involves more than a single person in attendance. This will make the narrative more meaningful and is also an efficient way of saving stage time.
• Choose sincerity over humor There’s always that urge to liven up the audience with attempts of offensive humor or even by poking fun at people. This could work if you were a stand-up comedian. But for acknowledgment speeches, it’s much more appropriate to utilize your limited stage time by expressing your sincerity. Believe it or not, your humble gratitude will resound more than any ironic jokes.

• Think creatively when writing the acknowledgment There’s always a person or an organization who’s responsible for breaking a written opus into the public eye. One who had his work published should afford due recognition to those who first broke the story. Typically, you must list such credits based on the individual publications where they appeared in first. Similar to academic publications, it’s also essential to address those who assisted you financially for your work’s publication. Also, list any fellowships or grants that gave support while you worked on a written opus in your acknowledgments.

What is a Dissertation Preface? Definition and Examples 

A dissertation preface is an integral part of the dissertation writing process for both graduate and doctoral students. Even though the preface is found at the beginning of the dissertation, it is essentially a task that authors engage in at the very end of their dissertation work.  

What is a Dissertation Preface?  

A dissertation preface is a section that precedes the main body of your dissertation. Unlike other sections of the dissertation, which are strictly academic and formal, the preface offers a more personal touch as it provides context and insight into your research journey. In this section, the author outlines the background and criticality of the work they have done, acknowledges contributions, and reflects on the experiences and challenges they faced during the research process. 

The dissertation preface serves various purposes, including:  

• Providing context : The key purpose is to provide the study’s main context so that the reader can understand its relevance and scope. 
• Sharing the author’s experience in writing the document : In the preface, there is space for the author’s personal reflections as they talk about the importance of the work, personal experiences, and issues and challenges they would have faced. The author can discuss their research goals, the particular research methods that were utilized, and the reasons for their choice. 
• Expressing the author’s motivation : The preface is also used to express the interests or motivations that led to the research and its writing.  
• Acknowledging contributions : Although a separate acknowledgements section is often included, most authors choose to mention key institutions, faculty, mentors, family, and friends who contributed in significant ways to the research.  

What to include in a dissertation preface?  

Here are the essential components that should be covered in a dissertation preface: 

• A short personal background of the author. 
• A brief account of your personal experiences with the study matter or circumstances that inspired you to conduct the research. 
• A brief description of how you did your research and any challenges during the research process. 
• Mention the target audience of your dissertation. 
• In the closing of the preface, provide your name and place. And date of writing. 

Is Preface and Acknowledgements same?  

While both the preface and the acknowledgements sections are personal, they are two very distinct sections that serve different purposes and are placed differently within a dissertation. Usually, dissertations contain either a preface or an acknowledgement section. As detailed above, the preface provides context, shares personal experiences while writing and the circumstances that motivated the conduct of the study. Institutions and critical individuals are also acknowledged for their contributions. The acknowledgements section is focused entirely on expressing gratitude to all persons and institutions that contributed significantly to the research and dissertation writing process. 

How to write a dissertation preface?  

• Provide a brief introduction to your topic: Begin with an engaging statement or anecdote that captures the reader’s attention and introduces your dissertation topic. Offer a glimpse of the content, key topics you discuss, and why your central theme or argument is crucial to be studied in depth. 
• Express what inspired you to conduct the study: Briefly discuss the rationale for your research, including aspects that motivated you to delve deeper into the study. 
• Detail your research process: Mention how you conducted the research, the setbacks or challenges, the choice of methods and so on can be outlined. 
• Specify your target audience: This is important to engage the interest of the concerned people in your research work. 
• Thank those who supported your research and dissertation: Give due credit to the people and institutions that helped you complete your research and dissertation. 

Preface example  

Understanding the existential issue of climate change and its impact on our environment, specifically on fragile coral reef ecosystems, has been a persistent goal for me since high school. The work before you is the result of this passion and my desire to discover ways to mitigate the damages caused by quickly changing climate conditions.  Over the years, I have followed and put in many years of research and hard work to find ways to preserve these “rainforests of the sea.” Engaging with subject experts and advocates of environmental sustainability across academic circles and also the industry gave me the necessary wherewithal to start thinking of this research work.   

As I went along this challenging journey, I learned many things that have enriched this study. From navigating the complexities of data collection to balancing academic commitments, each step taught me valuable lessons in perseverance and critical thinking. This would not have been possible without the encouragement and support of many people.

In your acknowledgements, it’s okay to use a more informal style than is usually permitted in academic writing , as well as first-person pronouns . Acknowledgements are not considered part of the academic work itself, but rather your chance to write something more personal.

Generally, there are two main categories of acknowledgements: professional and personal .

A good first step is to check your university’s guidelines, as they may have rules or preferences about the order, phrasing, or layout of acknowledgements. Some institutions prefer that you keep your acknowledgements strictly professional.

Regardless, it’s usually a good idea to place professional acknowledgements first, followed by any personal ones. You can then proceed by ranking who you’d like to thank from most formal to least.

• Chairs, supervisors, or defence committees
• Funding bodies
• Other academics (e.g., colleagues or cohort members)
• Editors or proofreaders
• Librarians, research/laboratory assistants, or study participants
• Family, friends, or pets

Typically, it’s only necessary to mention people who directly supported you during your thesis or dissertation. However, if you feel that someone like a secondary school physics teacher was a great inspiration on the path to your current research, feel free to include them as well.

Professional acknowledgements

It is crucial to avoid overlooking anyone who helped you professionally as you completed your thesis or dissertation. As a rule of thumb, anyone who directly contributed to your research should be mentioned.

A few things to keep in mind include:

• Even if you feel your chair didn’t help you very much, you should still thank them first to avoid looking like you’re snubbing them.
• Be sure to follow academic conventions, using full names with titles where appropriate.
• If several members of a group or organisation assisted you, mention the collective name only.
• Remember the ethical considerations around anonymised data. If you wish to protect someone’s privacy, use only their first name or a generic identifier (such as ‘the interviewees’).

Personal acknowledgements

There is no need to mention every member of your family or friend group. However, if someone was particularly inspiring or supportive, you may wish to mention them specifically. Many people choose to thank parents, partners, children, friends, and even pets, but you can mention anyone who offered moral support or encouragement, or helped you in a tangible or intangible way.

Some students may wish to dedicate their dissertation to a deceased influential person in their personal life. In this case, it’s okay to mention them first, before any professional acknowledgements.

After you’ve compiled a list of who you’d like to thank, you can then sort your list into rank order. Separate everyone you listed into ‘major thanks’, ‘big thanks’, and ‘minor thanks’ categories.

• ‘Major thanks’ are given to people who your project would be impossible without. These are often predominantly professional acknowledgements, such as your advisor , chair, and committee, as well as any funders.

How to phrase your acknowledgements

To avoid acknowledgements that sound repetitive or dull, consider changing up your phrasing. Here are some examples of common sentence starters you can use for each category.

Note that you do not need to write any sort of conclusion or summary at the end. You can simply end the acknowledgements with your last thank-you.

A simple construction consists of a sentence starter (in purple highlight ), followed by the person or entity mentioned (in green highlight ), followed by what you’re thanking them for (in yellow highlight .)

• Write in first-person, professional language
• Thank your professional contacts first
• Include full names, titles, and roles of professional acknowledgements
• Include personal or intangible supporters, like friends, family, or even pets
• Mention funding bodies and what they funded
• Appropriately anonymise or group research participants or non-individual acknowledgments

Don’t:

• Use informal language or slang
• Go over one page in length
• Mention people who had only a peripheral or minor impact on your work

You may acknowledge God in your thesis or dissertation acknowledgements , but be sure to follow academic convention by also thanking the relevant members of academia, as well as family, colleagues, and friends who helped you.

Yes, it’s important to thank your supervisor(s) in the acknowledgements section of your thesis or dissertation .

Even if you feel your supervisor did not contribute greatly to the final product, you still should acknowledge them, if only for a very brief thank you. If you do not include your supervisor, it may be seen as a snub.

One Health Investigation into Mpox and Pets, United States

Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is zoonotic and capable of infecting many mammal species. However, whether common companion animals are susceptible to MPXV infection is unclear. During July 2022–March 2023, we collected animal and environmental swab samples within homes of confirmed human mpox case-patients and tested for MPXV and human DNA by PCR. We also used ELISA for orthopoxvirus antibody detection. Overall, 12% (22/191) of animal and 25% (14/56) of environmental swab samples from 4 households, including samples from 4 dogs and 1 cat, were positive for MPXV DNA, but we did not detect viable MPXV or orthopoxvirus antibodies. Among MPXV PCR-positive swab samples, 82% from animals and 93% the environment amplified human DNA with a statistically significant correlation in observed cycle threshold values. Our findings demonstrate likely DNA contamination from the human mpox cases. Despite the high likelihood for exposure, however, we found no indications that companion animals were infected with MPXV.

Before 2022, the primary mode for monkeypox virus (MPXV) transmission was known to be zoonotic, and only limited human-to-human transmission was documented ( 1 , 2 ). Human MPXV infections resulting in mpox disease were hypothesized to be the result of direct or potentially indirect contact with infected wild mammals in Central and Western Africa ( 3 , 4 ). Our understanding of the potential for human-to-human spread of MPXV considerably broadened in the spring of 2022 ( 5 , 6 ). During that time, variant of clade II MPXV (clade IIb) was found in to be transmitted via direct contact among human populations and spreading primarily through sexual networks outside of mpox endemic regions ( 5 , 6 ).

Given the zoonotic origin and reported broad host-range of MPXV, efforts to understand and limit potential human-to-animal transmission are ongoing ( 4 , 7 ). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides guidance that persons with mpox stop or avoid contact with animals and that animals should be kept away from potentially infectious lesion material, objects, or surfaces ( 8 ). Mpox patients are generally urged by public health agencies to isolate at home unless hospitalization is clinically necessary ( 9 , 10 ). A person with mpox is considered infectious throughout their illness and until lesions have fully healed with new skin underneath; therefore, public health officials recommend that mpox patients isolating at home take proper infection control measures to prevent spread of infectious particles throughout the home ( 11 – 13 ). Unless infected persons take measures to completely isolate or reduce transmission potential, companion animals in close contact with mpox patients and their environments could be at higher risk for MPXV exposure than other mammal species, warranting special concern and investigation.

As of July 2024, no cases of MPXV infection or mpox disease had been confirmed in common domestic animals, such as dogs and cats, during the current global outbreak or any past outbreaks. One study in July 2022 described a 4-year-old dog in France that had been living and co-sleeping with 2 mpox case-patients ( 14 ). In that study, MPXV DNA was identified in swab samples from the dog’s skin and surface of mucosal lesions and in anal and oral swab samples ( 14 ). However, follow-up investigations suggested that the animal was not infected with MPXV ( 15 ). A similar case was documented in Brazil in August 2022, when a 5-month-old dog had lesions that were MPXV-positive by quantitative PCR ( 16 ). Whether viral DNA detection was a result of MPXV infection in those animals or the result of environmental contamination due to close contact with infected humans is unclear. We conducted a One Health investigation in the United States to assess the susceptibility of companion animals to mpox and the risk for reverse-zoonotic transmission within households.

Methods and Materials

Study population.

The CDC Muti-National Mpox Response’s One Health Team worked in collaboration with state and local jurisdictions to investigate the susceptibility of companion animals to MPXV infection. As part of that effort, CDC and state public health investigators collected blood samples from companion animals and swab specimens from companion animals and animal-associated objects. CDC tested swab and serum specimens via real-time PCR, orthopoxvirus (OPXV) serology, and viral culture. All animals tested were companion animals in a residence of a person with probable or confirmed mpox while the person was infectious. Animal sampling occurred within 21 days of any direct contact with the ill person before the person recovered ( Table 1 ).

During July 2022–March 2023, we conducted sample collection in the District of Columbia, Virginia, Minnesota, and Tennessee, USA. After the initial sampling timepoint, we attempted follow-up sampling from all households 3–4 months later to collect animal serum samples and assess postexposure or postinfection immune responses.

Questionnaire and Consent

State and local public health personnel from the District of Columbia, Virginia, Minnesota, and Tennessee assisted with the study by interviewing mpox cases in their jurisdictions and requesting their voluntary participation in the study. After a person gave verbal consent to participate, they were provided with a survey questionnaire and consent forms. The questionnaire ascertained details and a timeline of the human case, the animal’s health condition, general household information, types of contact between the person with mpox and the animal or animals in the household, and information about wild or domestic animals in and around the household. This project was reviewed by CDC clearance, cleared for human subjects, and determined to be nonresearch public health surveillance that did not require submission to the CDC institutional review board (project no. 0900f3eb81f79d72).

Swab Sample Collection

We performed all animal handling and sampling procedures in accordance with the approved CDC Institutional Animal Care Use Committee protocol (no. DOTMULX3183), in collaboration with state public health agencies, and with written consent of the animal’s owner. We collected a standardized set of polyester swab (Puritan, https://www.puritanmedproducts.com ) samples from the animal’s dorsum fur, ventral abdomen, oral cavity, and anorectal area under supervision of the owner. We sampled animal lesions, if present. We also collected animal-associated environmental (AAE) specimens from objects and surfaces often used by the animal.

Sample Processing and PCR

We processed swab samples by using the swab extraction tube system (SETS; Roche, https://www.roche.com ) with 400 μL of phosphate-buffered saline; after DNA extraction, we tested all samples for MPXV DNA by real-time PCR using an MPXV clade II–specific assay ( 17 ). In addition, we tested samples for human DNA by using the RNase-P PCR assay, which is used as an endogenous control when testing human specimens ( 18 ). We calculated Pearson correlation coefficients to assess the relationship between cycle threshold (Ct) values of MPXV clade II PCR–positive (Ct values < 37) and RNase-P reactive (Ct values <40) samples.

Viral Culture

We tested all PCR-positive swab samples for viable virus via cell culture by adding an aliquot of swab eluate to BSC-40 cell monolayers in T-25 flasks. We used an inoculation volume of 50 μL + 25 μL, depending on available eluate volume. We incubated flasks at 35.5°C in an atmosphere of 6% CO 2 in Roswell Park Memorial Institute medium ( 19 ). We incubated and observed flasks < 14 days or until ≈100% of monolayer showed cytopathic effect, following methods and media supplements described previously ( 11 ). To control the overgrowth of bacteria or fungi in T-25 flasks, we added penicillin/streptomycin, amphotericin B, and gentamicin to the cell culture medium. If we detected any bacterial or fungal contamination, we performed 4 cycles of medium replacement to wash the monolayers and repeated this process as needed to prevent overgrowth.

Blood Collection and Serologic Testing

We attempted blood collection from all cooperative animals for which the owner provided consent. We collected < 3 mL of blood from 20/34 animals during initial sampling and 21/25 animals during follow-up sampling. We cleaned the external venipuncture site with 90% ethanol and used a syringe or vacutainer needle for blood collection. For dogs and 1 rabbit, we collected blood via the cephalic or lateral saphenous veins. For cats, we collected blood via the jugular or medial saphenous veins. We stored and transported blood tubes at 4°C–20°C before centrifugation, after which we transferred serum into 2-mL cryotubes and stored at temperatures of at least –20°C until laboratory testing. We conducted a modified ELISA on all serum samples to determine presence of OPXV IgG antibodies, as previously described ( 20 , 21 ). We tested serum samples at a dilution of 1:100 by using microtiter plates coated with purified vaccinia virus (Dryvax strain) and using the A/G protein as the secondary antibody at a 1:10,000 concentration and developed plates for 25 minutes.

Data Analysis

When referring to animal swab samples, we defined prevalence as the proportion of total swabs collected from each animal from which we detected either MPXV DNA or RNase-P (RNP) by PCR. When referring to AAE samples, we defined prevalence as the proportion of total swabs collected from the AAE samples within that animal’s household that were MPXV-positive or RNP-positive. We also referred to detection of RNase-P via PCR as presence of human DNA.

For each animal, we calculated the duration of exposure, defined as cumulative number of days before sampling that an infectious owner had direct contact with the animal, including durations where direct contact was not reported but the animal was still sharing a common space with a person with mpox. Duration of exposure represented the total period that infectious lesion material (crusts or exudates) or other infectious particles were potentially shed or transferred within the home, to which the animal potentially had contact, either directly or via fomites.

We investigated factors reported in questionnaires that could affect animal MPXV exposure ( Table 1 ). Those factors included whether the owner was symptomatic during time of sampling (coded SXDS); the degree of animal outdoor activity (coded AOA), which we stratified by none (no outdoor activity), walks (periodic or frequent supervised walks outside), and yard (allowed in yard or outside unsupervised frequently or for prolonged periods); co-sleeping with the animal while the owner was infectious (coded CSI); and a score comprised of the sum of all reported interaction types between animals and humans that involved direct contact (coded DIS), which included cuddling, hugging, petting, kissing, co-sleeping, sharing food, and grooming ( Table 1 ).

We compared bivariate correlation coefficients among variables compiled from questionnaire data or diagnostic testing. We used SPSS Statistics 27 (IBM, https://www.ibm.com ) to compute Pearson correlation coefficients. We performed 2-tailed tests of significance and considered p values of < 0.05 or < 0.01 statistically significant, as applicable.

Overall, we sampled 34 individual companion animals from 21 households: 24 domestic dogs, 9 domestic cats, and 1 domestic rabbit ( Table 2 ). The age of the animals ranged from 4 months to 16 years; 22 were male and 12 were female. All but 1 household had a single human mpox case; the other household had 2 cases. We collected a total of 191 swab specimens from animals and 56 AAE specimens. If excess blood was available, we opportunistically tested select blood specimens via PCR, including 10 whole blood specimens preserved in EDTA and 1 blood clot. At examination, we observed skin lesions in 6 dogs and 1 cat, and lesion features and locations varied.

PCR for Animal Samples

Samples collected from 5 individual animals (4 dogs, 1 cat) from 4 households were MPXV-positive; 2 of the dogs shared a household. Total animal swab MPXV positivity was 12% (22/191); 21 MPXV-positive swabs were from dogs, and 1 was from a cat ( Table 3 ). All MPXV-positive animals also had > 1 sample with an RNP-positive test result. Ct values of MPXV-positive samples were 25.2–36.7 (mean 34.5). Results of specific sample types collected were 29% (4/14) for skin lesions, 16% (6/37) for ventral skin or fur, 12% (4/33) for dorsal fur, 11% (4/35) for periocular area, 8% (3/36) for anorectal area, and 3% (1/36) for oral.

Among animal MPXV-positive specimens, 82% were RNP-positive, whereas 25% of the MPXV DNA–negative specimens were RNP-positive ( Table 3 ). Ct values of MPXV-positive specimens that were RNP-positive positively correlated (p<0.01). In animal specimens, 18% (4/22) were MPXV-positive and RNP-negative, and positive Ct values (range 35.3–36.1) were near the upper limit of detection (Ct 37) for the assay. We did not detect MPXV DNA in any of the blood specimens tested via MPXV PCR. In addition, MPXV DNA prevalence in animal samples alone and when combined with AAE specimens significantly correlated with RNP prevalence in those same samples (p<0.05).

We collected AAE specimens from 20/21 households, predominately from animal beds or bedding, toys, and food and water dishes. Among households, 29% (6/21) were positive for MPXV DNA, as were 25% (14/56) of collected specimens, 93% (13/14) of which were positive for MPXV and RNP ( Table 3 ). In those same samples, AAE MPXV DNA prevalence positively correlated with human DNA prevalence (p<0.05). Of the 4 households with MPXV-positive animal swab specimens, all had MPXV-positive AAE swabs with Ct values of 29.9–35.9 (mean 32.8). For AAE specimens that were MPXV- and RNP-positive, the MPXV and RNase-P Ct values were significantly correlated (p<0.01). Of all AAE specimens, 66% (37/56) were RNP-positive, of which 82% (9/11) of specimens with Ct values <37 were in the 4 households with MPXV-positive AAE and animal swab samples.

Viral Culture and Serology

We attempted viral culture from all specimens with Ct values < 36 (n = 31), and all were negative with no signs of cytopathic effect. Three specimens from 2 dogs had bacterial contamination causing destruction of monolayer by day 6 or 7 postinfection, despite mitigating steps or retesting, and the harvested culture media tested negative by MPXV-specific PCR. In addition, all initial (n = 20) and follow-up (n = 22) serum specimens collected were ELISA-negative, and we detected no OPXV IgG. For 1 dog that had samples with the lowest MPXV Ct values, we collected 2 follow-up samples 2 months apart. Of the 5 animals that had MPXV-positive swab specimens, 3 did not have blood sampled at the initial timepoint due to noncompliance or aggression, and 3 were not available at the postexposure sampling timepoint.

Questionnaire Analysis

In total, 32% (11/34) of animals had preexisting health issues and 5 animals had preexisting skin lesions. In addition to the 5 animals with skin lesions that developed before owner symptom onset (all sampled), 2 additional animals had lesions that developed after owner symptom onset. We observed and sampled those lesions during the initial sampling visit, and 1 animal had skin and fur, periocular, and anorectal specimens that were PCR-positive for MPXV DNA, but we did not detect MPXV DNA from the lesion specimen, and serology results also were negative.

In total, 33% (7/21) of households reported no contact change with their animals. Reported types of changes in animal interactions included reducing frequency of interactions (9/21), stopping interactions (8/21), use of PPE during interactions (6/21), and relocating or isolating the animal (4/21); 1 household reported relegating animal care to uninfected persons outside the household. However, all but 1 household reported > 1 type of direct contact activity with each animal after the MPXV-positive human in the household had symptoms develop ( Table 1 ).

Households comprised apartments (n = 11) or single-family homes (n = 10), and approximate size range was 500–3,500 ft 2 ( Table 1 ). We observed a significant negative correlation between household size and prevalence of either MPXV (p<0.05) or human DNA (p<0.01) in animal samples and human DNA prevalence in environmental samples (p<0.01). Apart from human DNA prevalence, household size, and environmental MPXV prevalence, we observed no other statistically significant relationships for other variables potentially influencing prevalence of MPXV DNA in animal samples.

CDC advises that persons with mpox should avoid contact with animals, including pets, until lesions have fully healed to prevent potential virus spillback. That recommendation is because of uncertainty regarding susceptibility of companion animals to MPXV ( 9 ). If MPXV-infected persons cannot avoid contact with pets within the household, practicing appropriate infection control will prevent further exposure potential. In most households we visited, recommended quarantine and infection control procedures were not consistently followed.

Despite MPXV-positive swab specimens detected on the skin or fur of dogs and cats and in associated environmental samples, no dogs or cats with live virus or antibodies detected have been reported globally. In 2 cases outside of the United States in which MPXV DNA was detected in dogs ( 14 , 16 ), apart from apparent skin lesions, no other signs of infection were reported in the animals, including virus cultured from samples or OPXV antibodies detected by serology after additional investigation ( 15 ).

In our household study, skin lesions in 7 animals were the only observable clinical features that were potentially consistent with mpox disease. However, 5 animals exhibited lesions before owner symptom onset, and the 2 animals with skin lesions that were observed after owner symptom onset were negative for MPXV by PCR. Only 1 animal had MPXV-positive lesions sampled, a dog with lesion swab samples collected from a grouping of 3 large lesions on its rear leg, and the average Ct value of samples was 25.2. After further testing to consider potential DNA contamination from the owner, that sample also had the lowest average RNase-P Ct value (29.3) of all samples tested. In addition, that dog’s lesions were reported to have formed before symptom onset in the owner, culture attempts from that and all other samples were negative, and OPXV antibodies were not detected during any timepoint tested. Therefore, after reviewing all the data, we did not consider this animal a confirmed mpox case.

All animals with MPXV-positive samples in this study also had RNP-positive specimens collected, indicating the presence of human DNA. The statistically significant correlation of MPXV- and RNP-positive samples, MPXV PCR results showing high Ct values indicating low viral DNA loads, and the lack of viable virus or antibodies in the collected samples strongly suggest that observed lesions or scabs in these animals were not the result of MPXV infection. In addition, from our knowledge of MPXV pathology, an MPXV lesion would most likely produce high viral loads and at levels higher than for other sample types ( 22 ).

As reported in other household environmental sampling studies, MPXV DNA can be widely detected in indoor or household settings ( 11 , 12 , 23 – 25 ). In this study, we found that households with smaller shared spaces were significantly correlated with both MPXV and human DNA prevalence, suggesting that the risk for MPXV exposure could be higher in smaller living quarters. Given the capability of MPXV DNA to disseminate within the household of a person with mpox, and after consideration of the PCR results detailed here, persons with mpox, not the companion animals, likely were the source of the MPXV DNA we detected in the household.

The potential for contamination from either direct contact with a person with mpox or indirect exposure to materials containing MPXV DNA should be considered when interpreting results of PCR testing from companion animals. In addition, case definitions should consider potential extraneous contamination and require more than a PCR-positive result from an animal to be considered a confirmed animal mpox case ( 26 ). Contamination should also be considered as a reason for a positive PCR result and false positive results in humans with nonspecific lesions who have potentially had contact with an mpox case-patient.

MPXV infection in companion animals, if they are suitable hosts, is uncharacterized; clinical signs, viral shedding, and duration of infectious period are unknown. Thus, although unlikely, given the limits of our sampling design, it is possible that an infected animal escaped detection in our study. However, the overall PCR and serologic evidence best fits the hypothesis that the MPXV DNA detected in animal samples submitted for PCR testing is a result of DNA contamination from the infected human within the household.

More work is needed to determine the susceptibility of companion animals to clade-IIb MPXV. Thus, CDC still recommends that companion animal owners with mpox limit their interactions with their pets while infectious, particularly if they are sharing smaller living spaces. That precautionary measure is recommended until more information is available about the susceptibility of common mammalian companion animal species to mpox.

In conclusion, no strong evidence yet exists to suggest that common companion animals, such as dogs or cats, are susceptible to infection with clade IIb MPXV. Given high likelihood for exposure among most of these animals, the paucity of evidence indicating infection might indicate resistance to infection. Nonetheless, to prevent further viral spread and potential evolution and establishment of new endemic areas, during public health emergencies caused by emerging zoonotic diseases, responders should apply a One Health approach to investigate potential spillback of human infections to animals, including pets.

Charge induced deformation of scanning electrolyte before contact.

The recent developments of scanning electrochemical probe techniques focus on the strategy of scanning electrolyte. For example, scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) is based on holding the electrolyte in a glass capillary, while scanning gel electrochemical microscopy (SGECM) immobilizes the gel electrolyte on micro-disk electrodes or etched metal wires. In both SECCM and SGECM, the first and essential step is to approach the electrolyte probe to be in contact with the sample, which is very often achieved by current feedback with a constant applied potential between the probe and the sample. This work attempts to theoretically analyse the deformation of electrolyte during this approaching process. For liquid electrolyte in SECCM, surface tension is considered to counterbalance the gravity and electrostatic force in 2D cylindrical coordinates with axial symmetry. The deformation at equilibrium is solved under certain conditions. For gel electrolyte, a viscoelastic gel is analysed with simplified 1D geometry. Both equilibrium and dynamic approaching are considered. The results suggest that for both liquid and gel electrolytes, critical conditions exist for breaking the equilibrium. When applied potential is higher or the distance is lower than the threshold, the force will not equilibrate and the electrolyte will deform until contact. The critical condition depends on the properties (surface tension for liquid, elastic and viscous modulus for gel) and geometry (radius of capillary for liquid, thickness for gel) of electrolyte. Prospects of further extending the work closer to real experimental scenarios, especially SGECM, are also discussed.
