There are several reasons why someone would consider becoming a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). For one, many BCBAs get interested in the field because they want to work with children with special needs . While there are several career paths that work with these types of vulnerable communities, applied behavior analysis (ABA) is closely tied to the support and development of these groups.

If you’re interested in becoming a BCBA, here’s an overview of the timeline, the requirements for certification, and how to advance your career in this field.

How Long Does It Take to Become a BCBA?

Perhaps the most important factor in choosing a career path is understanding how long it will take to break into your desired field or position. However, it’s important to note that “becoming a BCBA is not a linear progression with the end-all-be-all being the exam,” says Nicole Davis, the director of the Applied Behavior Analysis programs at Northeastern University’s Bouvé College of Health Sciences.

The timeline of becoming a BCBA is influenced by several components, such as required education, work experience, and certifications. However, on average it takes about six to eight years to become a BCBA. This estimation includes a four-year bachelor’s degree and an ABA master’s degree, which can take anywhere from two to four years depending on whether you attend the program full- or part-time.

If you’re interested in what this timeline entails, here’s a closer look at the requirements of becoming a BCBA.

6 Requirements of Becoming a BCBA

While this information should act as a guide to the numerous steps in becoming a BCBA, it isn’t a comprehensive list. With constantly evolving industry standards and certification requirements, the journey to becoming a BCBA is subject to many changes.

To combat this uncertainty, Davis urges students to read the BACB website . “The first step to any career hunt is to do your research. For this, you want to make sure you’re checking in with the BCBA handbook .”

That being said, here are five requirements you’ll need to fulfill if you hope to become a BCBA.

1. Earn a Bachelor’s Degree

Earning a bachelor’s degree is an essential first step for most psychology careers and becoming a BCBA is no exception. While an educational background in psychology is encouraged, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related field isn’t a requirement. This is particularly promising for those who found a passion for helping vulnerable communities through behavior analysis while pursuing a degree that doesn’t necessarily align with ABA.

2. Enroll in the Right Applied Behavior Analysis Master’s Degree Program

Since board-certified behavior analysts are graduate-level professionals, a master’s degree as well as coursework in applied behavior analysis is required. While programs vary from school to school, it’s recommended that BCBAs earn their degree from an Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI)-recognized behavior analysis master’s program or an institution that offers a verified course sequence (VCS).

A VCS is a curriculum that has been verified by ABAI as meeting specific coursework requirements, content hours, and faculty standards. According to the ABAI website, a degree program that offers a VCS satisfies the Behavior Analyst Certification Board’s coursework requirements for the BCBA and BCaBA examination applications.

Northeastern’s Bouvé College of Health Sciences includes a verified course sequence to ensure all their students are properly prepared for the BCBA exam. This means students must complete 315 classroom hours of graduate-level class in a number of specified concentrations. While this number may change over time, the core concepts should remain the same, including:

  • Ethical and professional conduct
  • Concepts and principles of behavior analysis
  • Research methods in behavior analysis
  • Applied behavior analysis

Coursework isn’t the only important factor to consider when enrolling in an ABA master’s program. “You want to find the educational experience that’s best for you and your needs,” says Davis. “That means finding coursework that will help you pass the BACB exam, but more importantly, make you the behavior analyst that you want to be in the future.” This means finding a school that matches your personal values, learning style, and lifestyle needs.

3. Get Practical Experience

Experience is an essential component of any career that requires certification. As a result, BCBAs are expected to obtain practical experience under close supervision. These supervisors must be qualified to supervise per the BACB guidelines .

This can be one of the most challenging aspects of becoming a BCBA, however. According to Andrew Bonner, director of the Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis program at Northeastern’s Charlotte location, “Getting your supervised field work can be really tough. Not only do you need between 1,500 and 2,000 hours, but you have to have a supervisor oversee your progress in that context.”

Since supervisors juggle a number of responsibilities, it can be difficult to obtain experience hours in a timely manner. To combat this, the faculty at Northeastern’s Bouvé College of Health Sciences assist students in this process by offering a practicum course with these hours built in. No matter what institution you choose though, it’s important to keep a record of your hours and follow all requirements set forth by the BACB website to complete your certification.

4. Take the Behavior Analyst Certification Board Exam

After completing the required education and experience hours, prospective BCBAs will need to apply to take the board exam. This means providing requested documentation, including verification of a graduate-level degree and recorded experience hours. Once accepted, students will need to register and pay to be eligible to take the exam.

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) examination is a four-hour long test that’s meant to evaluate your knowledge of the behavior analysis key concepts. This is a common barrier for prospective BCBAs gaining certification. While a master’s in applied behavior analysis is meant to prepare you for this exam, not all programs produce high pass rates. Northeastern’s Bouvé College of Health Sciences offers course content focused on the BACB exam.

5. Apply for Certification and Licensure

Once you’ve passed your board exam, you’re ready to apply for certification and licensure if your state requires it. This allows BCBAs to practice independently in the field. Licensure and certification requirements vary from state to state, so it’s important to consult your state board for more information, especially since requirements are subject to change.

Despite the finality of this step, BCBAs are required to keep up their certification and licensure as well. This means you must obtain ongoing continuing education, adhere to BACB ethics requirements, and submit a completed certification renewal application along with the advertised fee. While most requirements vary from state to state, the BACB requires this recertification every two years to continue practicing.

Becoming a BCBA can be a daunting task, but there are several factors that can make it a little easier. For one, picking the right master’s degree program sets the foundation for this multi-step process, so it’s an incredibly important factor in your success. You want a program with “an integrated model where the end all be all is becoming a qualified, effective, good behavior analyst,” says Davis.

Certification Requirements (4th Edition)

What are the requirements for certification in behavior analysis as a bcba.

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc. ® (BACB ® ) sets the requirements for certification, and these requirements differ based on the level of certification sought. There are three basic requirements that must be met.

The three basic requirements for certification:

  • A master’s degree in psychology, education or applied behavior analysis approved by the BACB
  • Acceptable graduate level coursework in behavior analysis covering the BCBA examination content areas
  • Supervised experience

The requirements for certification change periodically, and our courses are updated accordingly. When the BACB published its Fourth Edition Task List and coursework requirements, the Florida Tech ABA Online program introduced new course sequences that meet the BACB‘s Fourth Edition Task List instructional requirements.

Some information about the Fourth Edition Task List BACB coursework requirements – BCBA level:

  • Forty-five (45) additional hours are required for certification (270 hours total).
  • Ethics credits must be taken as one or more stand-alone course(s).
  • Tasks within the Fourth Edition Task List have been revised over the previous version.

Our BCBA course sequence:

  • All courses meet the Fourth Edition Task List BACB coursework requirement.
  • Taking 3 credits per term, the sequence can be completed in six terms (approximately 18 months).

  • Instructional material is designed and sequenced to teach students the concepts, principles and procedures specified in the BACB task list so students are well prepared to take the board exams.

ABA Certification Through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB)

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) certification ensures that providers of behavior analysis services are qualified to provide ABA services to clients with a variety of skill deficits, needs, and problem behaviors. Certification from the Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BACB) is indicative of an advanced level of knowledge and experience and is now a requirement common among employers.

Many states have also adopted BACB’s credentials for the purpose of licensing ABA practitioners in three distinct roles:

  • Applied Behavior Analysts – BCBA® or BCBA®-D Credential
  • Assistant Applied Behavior Analysts – BCaBA® Credential
  • Registered Behavior Technicians – RBT® Credential

Certification has also become a standard requirement for insurance reimbursement for ABA services provided for the treatment of autism spectrum disorder.

BACB Certifications for Providers of Applied Behavior Analysis Therapies

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) was created in 1998 to establish professional qualifications for professionals that ABA services. BACB credentials adhere to the international standards developed by the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) and its Behavior Analysis Accreditation Board (BAAB), which accredits undergraduate and graduate programs in ABA.

The BACB offers credentials for three roles at four different levels:

  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral (BCBA®-D) (Considered the same credential as the BCBA® and does NOT grant a higher level of authority; requires first earning the BCBA®)

Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA®)

Board certified assistant behavior analyst (bcaba®), registered behavior technician (rbt®).

BACB professional certifications are based on the Model Act for Licensing/Regulating Behavior Analysts . They were originally developed and operated by the State of Florida and were later transferred to the BACB under a special agreement.

As of November 2016, the number of behavior analyst professionals holding a BACB credential included:

  • RBT®: 25,279
  • BCaBA®: 2,439
  • BCBA®: 20,274
  • BCBA®-D: 2,000

The BACB offers four certification levels that reflect varying education and experience qualifications among professionals who practice applied behavior analysis:

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT®) credential is designed for paraprofessionals who practice under the close supervision of a BCBA®, BCaBA®, or BCBA®-D and implement behavior-analytic services. The job duties of RBT®s are based on individual training, experience, and competence qualifications, although the scope of their work is ultimately determined by a supervising BCBA®, BCaBA®, or BCBA®-D.

RBT®s must have at least one responsible certificant listed on the RBT® Registry supervising them. The chosen certificant must ensure that the RBT® always works under the supervision of a BABC certificant.

To become an RBT®, applicants must meet the following requirements :

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Possess high school diploma or the equivalent
  • Complete at least 40 hours of training
  • Complete a criminal background check
  • Pass the RBT® Competency Assessment
  • Pass the RBT® exam

RBT®s must pass the RBT® Competency Assessment on an annual basis to qualify for renewal.

The Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA®) is an undergraduate certification for professionals in behavior analysis. BCaBA®s cannot practice independently and must be supervised by at least one BCBA® or BCBA®-D.

They can, however, supervise the work of RBT®s and others who implement behavior-analytic interventions, provided they complete additional training and continuing education requirements for supervisors .

To become a BCaBA®, applicants must meet the following requirements :

  • Complete a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Complete approved coursework
  • Complete a defined period of supervised practice
  • Take and pass the BCaBA® exam

BCaBA®s must document ongoing supervision and complete specific continuing education requirements to qualify for renewal. BCaBA®s who provide supervision must complete additional training and continuing education requirements.

Note: BCaBA®s interested in becoming BCBA®s can apply to take the BCBA® exam once they have completed the required graduate-level degree, coursework and supervised experience.

BCBA® certification is a graduate-level certification in behavior analysis. BCBA®s are independent practitioners of behavior-analytic therapies and services. Certification also allows these professionals to supervise the work of BCaBA®s and RBT®s, provided they complete additional training and continuing education requirements.

To become a BCBA®, applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements and then take and pass the BCBA® exam:

  • Coursework : Earn an acceptable graduate degree from an accredited university, complete acceptable graduate coursework in behavior analysis, and complete a defined period of supervised practical experienceAcceptable degree programs include those in behavior analysis, education, or psychology that are accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis International’s (ABAI) Behavior Analysis Accreditation Board (BAAB), include a BACB-Verified Course Sequence (VCS), or meet BACB course content allocation requirements and receive approval from the BACB.The BACB requires between 750-1,500 hours of supervised practical experience in applied behavior analysis.
  • Faculty Position and Research : Earn an acceptable graduate degree, hold a full-time faculty position in behavior analysis that includes research and teaching and complete a defined period of supervised practical experience
  • Postdoctoral Work : Hold an acceptable doctoral degree that was conferred at least 10 years ago, and have at least 10 years of post-doctoral practical experience

BCBA®s must meet continuing education requirements to qualify for renewal.

BCBA®s may also apply for BCBA®-D certification if they complete a doctoral-level degree that meets qualifications.

Board Certified Behavior Analyst – Doctoral (BCBA®-D)

The BCBA®-D is a doctoral designation for BCBA®s who have completed doctoral-level training in behavior analysis. It is not a separate credential and does not grant any additional privileges beyond the BCBA®. In other words, BCBA®s and BCBA®-Ds function in the same capacity as independent practitioners of behavior-analytic therapies and services.

To qualify for the BCBA®-D credential, applicants must be an active BCBA® in good standing and meet one of the following requirements:

  • Complete a doctoral degree program that is accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI)
  • Have passed at least four behavior-analytic courses as part of the doctoral program; OR
  • Have been formally advised/supervised by a faculty member holding the BCBA® credential; OR
  • Have authored two peer-reviewed journal articles that are behavior-analytic in nature
  • Completing at least 1,800 hours of experience in applied behavior analysis through a postdoctoral employment experience or postdoctoral fellowship that was supervised by a BCBA®
  • Authoring two peer-reviewed journals that are behavior-analytic in nature during a postdoctoral training experience

BCBA®-Ds must follow the same maintenance requirements as BCBA®s, which includes completing continuing education requirements. BCBA®-Ds who want to provide supervision must complete additional training and continuing education requirements.

Coursework in Applied Behavior Analysis (BCBA) Overview

Behavior analysis is a scientific approach to analyzing behavior and how the environment affects it. "Behavior" refers to all kinds of actions and skills (not just misbehavior), and "environment" includes all sorts of physical and social events that might change or be changed by one's behavior. The science of behavior analysis focuses on principles (that is, general laws) about how behavior works, or how learning takes place. For example, one principle of behavior analysis is positive reinforcement: When a behavior is followed by something that is valued, that behavior is likely to be repeated. Through decades of research, the field of behavior analysis has developed many techniques for increasing useful behaviors and reducing those that may be harmful or that interfere with learning. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the use of those tactics and principles to address socially important problems, and to bring about meaningful behavior change.

The classes offered within the Applied Behavior Analysis course sequence are approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) under the 5th Edition Standards and satisfy the coursework requirements to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).This coursework does not lead to licensure as a Behavior Analyst (LBA) in the State of New York.

Career Opportunities

Behavior analysts function as individual clinicians or are employed in organizations in numerous fields. These include education, behavioral medicine, mental health, disability, and children's services, business, and institutions of higher learning. Behavior analysts often supervise associates or other personnel in the implementation of intervention services, or consult to other personnel ( New York State Association for Behavior Analysis ). Behavior analysts are employed in a variety of treatment, education and rehabilitation settings including: autism, behavior and learning disorders, developmental disabilities, performance management, parent and child interactions, child abuse and neglect, behavioral safety, school consultation, curriculum development and evaluation, parent and staff training, and language development. Employers include profit and non-profit agencies and consulting firms.

Our goal is to prepare students to be competent, inclusive, ethical, and professional behavior analysts who work with persons with developmental disabilities and their families.

You will begin the program alongside your fellow student cohort and progress through the courses together. You can complete your degree in two years by taking multiple courses in autumn, winter and spring quarters, along with one course in the summer. Need a slower pace? We can adjust the course sequence to take three years for completion.

Our synchronous online classes use cutting-edge learning technology, facilitating interactive lectures, thought-provoking discussions, collaborative group activities, and quizzes. You'll actively take part in real-time, ensuring an engaging and immersive educational experience.

To support working professionals, our classes are conducted in the evening, typically starting at 5 p.m. PST.

Supervised fieldwork is a crucial requirement to sit for the BACB exam. It provides you with hands-on experience to apply the strategies and skills learned during your coursework, ultimately preparing you for success as a BCBA.

You can obtain supervision for your fieldwork hours through this program. It is not mandatory to receive your fieldwork supervision through the University of Washington, and you do not need to live near Seattle to receive supervision from the program. Earning your master's degree and BCBA certification involves two separate examinations:

Board Certified Behavior Analyst examination

After finishing this program, you will have met all requirements to sit for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) exam. Our faculty and advisors will help you navigate BACB exam process.

It is important to note that while the BCBA certification is valid in all 50 states, many states also require behavior analysts to be licensed. State laws related to licensure of behavior analysts vary and do not necessarily reflect the same requirements as the BCBA certification. Please research the requirements for the state you plan to apply for licensure in. For more information, visit BACB's page on state licensure .

IMPORTANT: Only individuals residing in the United States, Canada and UK may apply for BACB certification. Visit BACB's page on international development .

Master’s examination

During your final quarter, you will need to pass a comprehensive master's examination that covers all ABA content covered throughout the program. This examination is a University of Washington requirement.

Admission requirements and process

We expect our candidates to have practical experience in working with people who have disabilities. This could include experience as a tutor, paraeducator, or teacher in a program that uses ABA strategies and methodologies. Your hands-on experience in this field shows your commitment and understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.

To strengthen your application, we prefer candidates who have at least one year of direct applied behavior analysis experience. This experience could be gained through working in roles that involve applying ABA principles and techniques.

While we do not impose specific requirements about the field of your bachelor's degree, we highly value any related experiences you may have. Your experiences, regardless of study field, contribute to your understanding and perspective, making you a well-rounded candidate.

If you already hold a master's degree in another field, you can apply to the program as a graduate non-matriculated student. This pathway allows you to take a reduced course load per quarter while still completing the program within two years. We welcome master's degrees from any field of study and value the diverse experiences you bring to the program. If you have any questions about the sufficiency of your master's degree toward certification, please contact the Behavior Analyst Certification Board .

Your degree can be in-progress when applying but must be completed before the program starts.

  • Include one from each institution from which you've earned a degree and one from every institution you have attended in the previous 5 years.
  • Your transcripts must include your name, coursework and degree (if completed)
  • If you are offered admission , the UW Graduate School will request an official transcript from your most recent degree earned

The UW Graduate School requires a cumulative GPA of 3.0, or 3.0 for your most recent 90 graded quarter credits (60 semester credits). However, we review your application holistically. If your GPA is below 3.0, contact us at [email protected] for advice on how to strengthen your overall application.

At least one letter should speak to your work experience in applied behavior analysis. During the online application process, you will be given instructions for adding your recommenders and getting their letters submitted electronically. All recommenders must submit their letters online.

A current academic and professional resume or vita is required. In addition to educational degrees and professional experience, you should include a listing of all relevant awards, publications, presentations or other achievements that will help us evaluate your application. We are looking for at least one year of experience with applied behavior analysis

The admissions committee uses your statement of purpose, along with other evidence, to determine whether your goals are well-matched with our programs. Your statement should answer the following questions:

  • What in your past experience has influenced your interest in applied behavior analysis?  
  • What in your academic and work experience has prepared you for graduate school in ABA?
  • Why is the program at the University of Washington a good match for your academic and career goals?
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion are important to our ABA program. Please speak to the unique experiences and perspectives you would bring to our program.

Your statement should be 2 pages, double-spaced.

While optional, you can add to your application by submitting a personal history statement with each application. This statement should address your intellectual growth and development, inclusive of and beyond your academic goals. Speak to topics like:

  • Educational, cultural and economic opportunities and disadvantages you've experienced
  • Ways these experiences affected the development of your special interests, career plans and future goals.
  • Any additional topics requested on a specific program's page

Statements should be no longer than two pages long. And while there are no standard formatting requirements, we encourage double-spaced text with a legible font.

When completing your application, you will select the following options:

  • Graduate if you want to earn your master’s degree
  • Graduate Non-matriculated if you already have your master’s degree
  • Education - Seattle (MEd - Special Education - Applied Behavior Analysis Online Education)

Step 1: Application processing

  • Within 7 business days after the deadline, we will check if your application if fully complete
  • We will email you whether your application is complete or incomplete
  • If your application is missing anything, you will have a short amount of time submit these items
  • You can also log into the online application and check your status and see any missing items

Step 2: Application review

  • Committees begin reviewing applications about three weeks after the deadline
  • You will receiving an email when your application has entered the review phase

Step 3: Decision notification

  • The final decision will be emailed to you
  • Your status will also be updated in the online application
  • You may be able to transfer up to six credits toward your UW masters in special education
  • You must petition the BACB to substitute courses toward BCBA exam requirements

If you have previously taken similar courses at another university, you may be eligible to transfer up to six credits toward your UW master's degree. The acceptance of transferred credits is subject to advisor approval in compliance with the Graduate School's policies.

Please note that the University of Washington is not authorized to approve course substitutions that fulfill the BACB's requirements for the BCBA exam. If you believe you have completed a course that adequately substitutes for the BACB's requirements, you must petition the certification board directly.

Costs and funding

The online ABA program is a self-sustaining, fee-based program. Course fees are charged on a per-credit basis and are the same for Washington residents and non-residents. The current estimated cost is: 

  • $589 per credit 
  • $37,696 total

Estimates are subject to change due and may differ due to additional UW fees, course load, etc.

ABA Online Program General Scholarship

The Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) General Scholarship consists of awards up to $8,000. Students in the ABA online program will be invited to apply for the scholarship after they are admitted to the program. The selection process is based on academic merit and financial need. Additional scholarships may be awarded to fund students' supervised fieldwork.

ABA Online Program Diversity Scholarship

The Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Diversity Scholarship consists of awards up to $8,000. Students in the ABA online program will be invited to apply for the scholarship after they are admitted to the program. We value diversity and equity within our program and the ABA field, and the selection process is based on admission materials and a personal essay. Students from underrepresented racial and ethnic communities are given preference during the selection process.

The Path(s) to Becoming a BCBA®

4 Paths to Becoming a BCBA®

Long before candidates can sit for the exam, prospective BCBAs must meet a series of requirements established by the BACB® and submit an application in order to prove their eligibility. Currently, there are four paths to meet the eligibility requirements, though it’s important to note that the BACB® will be revising the pathways in 2027: 

  • Obtain an ABAI accredited university degree.
  • Complete the required Behavior Analytic coursework.
  • Teaching and research as faculty.
  • Postdoctoral experience.

Regardless of the path, the BACB® requires all candidates to complete a minimum amount of supervised fieldwork in behavior analysis. The base number of hours varies depending on the path and whether a candidate chooses to complete “supervised fieldwork” or “concentrated supervised fieldwork.” The latter calls for fewer hours but has additional supervisory requirements. 

Supervised fieldwork gives future BCBAs the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field and includes activities such as conducting assessments, writing behavior plans, and overseeing behavior-analytic programs. These fieldwork hours must be supervised by an active BCBA®; a licensed or registered psychologist certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology who was tested in applied behavior analysis; or an authorized Verified Course Sequence instructor.

Pathway 1: Obtain a Degree From a Program Accredited or Recognized by Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) or the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts (APBA)

Pathway 1 to Becoming a BCBA® is to Obtain a Degree From a Program Accredited or Recognized by Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) or the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts (APBA)

Candidates pursuing this avenue must receive a master’s or doctorate degree from accredited universities .The BACB® announced in their June 2023 newsletter, that they have expanded their educational requirement to now include universities accredited by APBA, as well as ABAI. These universities have undergone a thorough review to ensure their program meets ABAI’s and APBA’s respective standards, which outlines criteria for the curriculum, coursework, and the administration. Once a candidate has received a degree from an accredited university, they then must complete the necessary supervised fieldwork. Pathway 1 requires 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork, or 1,500 hours of concentrated supervised fieldwork.

Pathway 2: Behavior-Analytic Coursework

Those pursuing a BCBA® certification through coursework must have a graduate degree from a “ qualifying institution ,” have completed both an acceptable graduate coursework sequence in behavior analysis and supervised fieldwork. The BACB recognizes “qualified institutions” as universities or colleges in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or Australia which have been accredited by their country’s respective regulatory board. Candidates with degrees from non-qualifying institutions, such as those in other countries, must undergo a degree equivalency evaluation to demonstrate that their degree is equivalent to a U.S. master’s degree or higher. Candidates must also complete at least 315 hours of behavior-analytic coursework, as well as either 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork or 1,500 of concentrated supervised fieldwork.

Pathway 2 to becoming a BCBA® is Completing Behavior-Analytic Coursework

Pathway 3: Faculty Teaching and Research

Pathway 3 to Becoming a BCBA® is Being Faculty, Teaching and Research

This​​ route requires candidates to have an acceptable graduate degree from a qualifying institution, previously held a full-time faculty position in behavior analysis that includes research and teaching, and completed supervised fieldwork. To qualify, candidates must have worked at an institution, full-time for at least three years (cumulative). This faculty appointment must also include certain characteristics, including teaching at least five sections of behavior-analytic coursework at the graduate level. Candidates are also required to demonstrate their research and must have published at least one journal article related to behavior analysis. As with the others, this approach also requires either 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork or 1,500 hours of concentrated supervised fieldwork.

Pathway 4: Postdoctoral Experience

To apply for BCBA® certification via postdoctoral experience, candidates must have a doctoral degree from a qualifying institution and have 10 years of full-time experience practicing behavior analysis (time spent teaching behavior analysis does not count). That experience must also have occurred under a relevant state/provincial license or national professional credential. Unlike the others, this path requires only 500 hours of supervised fieldwork.

While the journey to certification is different for everyone, and life has a way of interrupting our best-laid plans, it can take an average of 6 to 10 years to receive a BCBA® certification. This includes the time needed to obtain the required undergraduate and master’s degrees, and complete the necessary fieldwork and training. Once a candidate has met the eligibility requirements, and their application has been approved by the board, they can then take the BCBA® exam.
