Here, we show you a step-by-step solved example of physics. This solution was automatically generated by our smart calculator:

What do we already know? We know the values for acceleration ($a$), velocity ($v$), distance ($y$), height ($y_0$) and want to calculate the value of velocity ($v_0$)

According to the initial data we have about the problem, the following formula would be the most useful to find the unknown ($v_0$) that we are looking for. We need to solve the equation below for $v_0$

We substitute the data of the problem in the formula and proceed to simplify the equation

Multiply $-2$ times $9.81$

Multiply $-19.62$ times $3.2$

Calculate the power $0^2$

Rearrange the equation

 Intermediate steps

We need to isolate the dependent variable , we can do that by simultaneously subtracting $-62.784$ from both sides of the equation

$x+0=x$, where $x$ is any expression

Removing the variable's exponent raising both sides of the equation to the power of $\frac{1}{2}$

Divide $1$ by $2$

Simplify $\sqrt{v_0^2}$ using the power of a power property: $\left(a^m\right)^n=a^{m\cdot n}$. In the expression, $m$ equals $2$ and $n$ equals $0.5$

Multiply $2$ times $0.5$

Calculate the power $\sqrt{62.784}$

The internet is awash with information. There are reportedly over 1.17 billion websites in the world right now , with over 250,000 new websites being created every day. By the time you finish reading this article, theyā€™ll be another 2,000+ new websites on the web. Now thatā€™s a lot of information for anyone to sift through. This is why I have taken the liberty to compile the 25 best physics websites on the internet for you. Whether you are a physics student, teacher, or just a mailman interested in the formation and development of black holes, Iā€™ve got you. My comprehensive list caters to all classes of people, from those in academia to those ā€œin the hoodā€.

Of course, it comes down to your preferences and what you are looking for in a physics website. So without further ado, I bring to you the ā€¦

Physics websites for students (early college and high school)

Student learning from computer

These are curriculum-based physics blogs. They are sort of like textbooks, but they are on the web. Most of them are written by teachers and aimed at students. This list is not in order of preference.

The Physics Classroom

I believe the idea for this website is to have a physics website that really feels like a classroom, and for that, I give them an ā€˜Aā€™. The website is well structured with lessons and sub-lessons, with sub-lessons consisting of ā€œCheck Your Understandingā€ providing an opportunity to assess one’s understanding of the lesson material.

A lesson on Newtonā€™s second law of motion, for example, is divided into 5 generous sections. The sections begin by tackling the underlying conception problem (misconception) of Newtonā€™s laws and then develop the idea to eventually incorporate numerical problems at the end.

best physics problem solving site

This site also boasts one of the most popular tutorials on the internet. Other popular sections of the website with monitoring come at a small subscription fee. I am willing to bet itā€™s worth your money.

Khan Academy

In 2008, Salman (Sal) Khan was tutoring his cousin in mathematics using a Yahoo! Doodle Images service. It involved videos recorded in the virtual background with Khanā€™s voice narrating over them. Khan posted the videos on YouTube and they gradually gained attention. The rest is history as they say.

Today, the Khan Academy YouTube channel has over 6 million subscribers, over 7000 videos, and over 1.8 billion views.

The websiteā€™s mission reads as follows, ā€œ To provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere ā€¦ ā€

The website covers are vast category of materials ranging from early kindergarten to early college. Most of these are mathematics and science courses.

Itā€™s basically a free online educational platform ā€“ and itā€™s one of the best.

Started by former classmates Zishaan Hayath and Hemanth Goteti in 2013, the duo quoted ā€œpoor education quality and priceā€ as the reasons for the inspiration to start the online educational platform. The platform focuses chiefly on the Indian Curriculum mostly catering to students preparing for JEE and medical examinations.

The platform relies heavily on a fleet of freelancers to prepare modules, classes, and other teaching materials. Most freelancers donā€™t have much good to say about Toppr, with most citing ā€œexcessive working hours, pressure and low paymentā€.

However, in my opinion, if you are a student, the website has very good, up-to-date, well-prepared content ā€“ most of it is free.

You only pay for video classes, live-classes, and some exercises. You can also ask three doubts (questions) free of cost on the App, after that youā€™ll have to pay to unlock others. Like Khan Academy, it caters to students ranging from as early as 10 years old to early-twenties (early college students).

The Physics Hypertext Book

Glenn Elert, the author of Physics Hypertext Book laments, ā€œ most physics textbooks are written by corporations and not authors ā€¦ as a result, they lack a writerā€™s voice ā€¦ ā€ I suspect most physics students share the same sentiment about textbooks.

He, therefore, started the Physics Hypertextbook as a way of putting a writerā€™s voice on a physics textbook. Except this textbook will beavailable on the internet – for free.

His website is structured to look like a high-school physics book, with contents presented chapter-wise. It is one of my favorite physics websites on the internet.

Lumen Learning

Cofounded by Dr. David Wiley and Ken Thanos in 2013, Lumen Learning is dedicated to make education more affordable by facilitating the integration of Open Education Resources (OER) and bring new ideas to pedagogy.

The website has over 65 subjects which are (for a large part) freely available. Lumen Learning collaborates with learning institutions, and if there is anything that is going to involve payment, the institution will pay ā€“ not the student.

The payment services include customized courses, feedback for students, homework system, which are more institution-tailored anyway. If you are looking to study physics on your own, you may not even need those premium options, the free content will suffice.

Byju’s

This education technology company offers learning programs for students following Indian-curriculum students. In a nutshell, it is a mine of educational materials, tutorials, and content. If you are looking to study physics ā€“ this is among the top websites that you should visit.

This is an online learning platform with plenty of experience in the industry. Started in May of 2002 by Adrian Ridner and Ben Wilson, the website provides both personalized adaptive learning and tools for both teachers and students.

The materials here are not free, it costs anywhere between 30$ – 60$ a month for premium options. However, following the Covid-19 pandemic, last year Study announced that itā€™ll be putting together a list of 40 free online courses in history, math, English, and science.

Article-based physics websites: For the common reader.

Woman reading from a smartphone.

If you are not in school, but just interested in the concepts of physics out of your own curiosity without an annoying test or exam hanging over your head. Then I have these 8 article-based physics websites on the web that will cater to your appetite for curiosity.

Physics World

If I were to cram everything into one physics website for common readers and scientists alike, then Physics World would be it. Launched in the late 1980s, this website forms part of a larger Physics World Portfolio that includes magazines, films, podcasts and so much more. Some of the best science writers and editors out there write the articles on this website.

Here is their mission, ā€œā€¦ we provide international readership with a unique mix of daily news, opinion and analysis ā€¦ā€ Honestly, thatā€™s about anything you could be looking for out there right?

Started in 2004 as “Physorg.com”, it has evolved to be “phys.org”. It is (in a nutshell) a comprehensive science website covering almost all fields of science. The website, which is part of the Science X network, boasts 5 million scientists, researchers, and engineers every month, with over 200 articles published every day. The mission is ā€œto provide the most complete and comprehensive daily coverage of the full sweep of science, technology, and medicineā€.

It is one of the best and commanding physics websites on the web. On their about page, they have outlined ā€œ12 reasons for reading daily news on Science Xā€. Gotta love the PR team!

This is where I would go to do everything. From learning How to calculate the force of friction to help me understand my physics homework to learn about the Composition of a Black Hole when I want to pass the time.

It is one of the few websites on the web that caters to my needs both as a student and as someone interested in physics. This is best summarised on the website about page. ā€œ We want to be every studentā€™s go-to resource for all things science ā€¦ whether you need help solving quadratic equations or the latest update on a major storm ā€¦ ā€

This a Q/A (questions and answers) website. More of a platform than a website to fair. If your search on the web revolves around physics questions, then Iā€™d recommend this site for you.

Chances are the questions that you have, may have already been asked and answered. So you may not have to ask the question again, your task will only be navigating this site for answers. (Donā€™t sweat about it, the Quora algorithm will make it easy for you).

For example, you could ask, What banged the Big Bang ? And the award-winning theoretical physicist, Richard Muller , will answer you! Plus multiple Ph.D. students, undergraduates, teachers, and others may also answer you. Ultimately, you end up with a whole lot of perspectives ā€“ from real people, some of who are the best in the field.

Other websites (not necessarily exclusive to physics) include the following:

Wikipedia is a wealth of information. Almost all phenomenona are covered in Wikipedia, including biographies, events, and other debates pertaining to physics. In addition, Wikipedia articles are a wealth of references, you get lots of information crammed into one article.

The biggest disadvantage is that almost anyone can edit articles on there, so thereā€™s a chance that they may be misleading. Also, Wikipedia articles lack engagement and a writerā€™s voice, they feel like a research paper. That can put off some people.

This is essentially like Wikipedia with one big advantage: they cannot be edited by anyone. As a result, information on Britannica is very reliable. Not only that, the authors writing for Britannica are some of the best in their fields. Authors of physics articles include qualified physics professors, writers, and scholars such as Michio Kaku , Cyril Domb , Anthony Aguire , and others.

Other notable mentions in this category includes:

Science Tech Daily

Discover magazine

Nasa Science

Scientific American

Quanta Magazine

New Scientist

Websites about space, astronomy, and the universe.

Bad Astronomy

Physics research papers and journals

For research papers, journals and other scientific publications you might want to visit the following:

Papers in Physics

ResearchGate

Last but not least, (in fact, the greatest) if you believe you have discovered something new in physics and you wish to publish your results, here is what you do:

Write a scientific paper including an abstract detailing your theory and send it to ā€œPhysical Review Lettersā€ here is their website ( Information for authors ).

They are very honest people and wonā€™t try to steal your discovery.

If you think there is any experiment that can test your theory, be sure to include it there as well.

My personal favorites?

I would say Probing Physics ! Because itā€™s mine (ha-ha!)

But other than that, Iā€™d say Space, Physics World, and Quanta magazine. I am also a regular reader of Discover Magazine and Scientific American from time to time. On YouTube, I am subscribed to the World Science Festival , MIT Open Courseware , and Yale courses . I highly recommend these last two if you are looking to study college physics, seen as most curriculum-based websites in this list stop at high school or early college.

best physics problem solving site

Of course, this is not the ultimate list of ā€œbest physics websitesā€ on the internet. There may be other physics websites on the internet that may be better at some aspects than those mentioned here. Also, depending on oneā€™s taste and preferences, this list might not appeal. This list is more of a reference list than an ultimate list.

A Note to Students

Student visitors to The Physics Classroom website come from a variety of backgrounds. Most are enrolled in a physics course; some are studying physics as part of a home-school program. Many come as frustrated students seeking help to get them back on the proverbial track . And some are simply enthusiastic or conscientious and are supplementing their usual successful studies with the use of online resources. Students come from a variety of backgrounds and for a variety of reasons. But nearly all these student visitors have one thing in common - they are confronted with the frequent challenge of solving physics word problems.

Solving physics word problems can be frustrating. For many, it is the most frustrating part of a physics course. At the same time, there is a great sense of accomplishment associated with reading a challenging problem, identifying the proper formula, performing the correct mathematical operations and ending up with the correct answer. Unfortunately, the emotional reward associated with getting it right is often an infrequent experience for many students. Many students become frustrated, lose heart, and give up, eventually concluding that I'm just not any good at physics; the math always gets in my way . These sentiments of frustration and loss can turn a physics course into a long ordeal. Fortunately, these frustrations do not have to ruin your physics experience. As many students have found, frustration and physics do not have to be synonyms. With some hard work, some learned habits, and some practice, even the most defeated student can become a relatively effective problem solver. The Calculator Pad seeks to improve student problem solving abilities and provide the guided practice which is needed to boost their confidence in this area.

What Is At The Calculator Pad?

How can i benefit from using the calculator pad.

If you are enrolled in a physics course which emphasizes the solving of physics word problems, then it is in your best interest (or at least in the best interest of your grade) to improve your ability to solve such problems. Such improvements are the result of practice. Yet practice isn't always the pathway to improvement. For many students, practice leads along the pathway to frustration. The Calculator Pad makes an attempt to lead students along the proper and most profitable pathway - the pathway to improved problem solving ability and increased confidence in one's habits of solving problems.

Students need feedback when solving physics word problems. They need to know if they got the correct answer. Every problem at The Calculator Pad is accompanied by an answer. By default, the answer is hidden. Clicking a button reveals the answer. When a student misses the answer, it is important that an effort is made to review the solution and identify the location of error. Self-correction of errors is one of the most impressionable experiences that can contribute to one's learning. For many students, finding one's errors is difficult and frustration often sets in before errors are found and corrected. Every problem at The Calculator Pad is accompanied by an audio file which identifies common errors, points out frequent mental obstacles, describes occasional misconceptions, and explains the proper way of thinking about and solving the problem. By following the suggestions in the audio file, students can more easily solve the problem. But more important than solving a single problem correctly, a student who listens carefully can begin to adopt habits which allow them to think about solving physics problems the way a physicist solves a problem.

For such students, there is a need for help in order for them to sustain the individual application of problem-solving in Physics. The Calculator Pad is intended to meet that need for individual help in order to get a student started or un-stuck. Each problem set is accompanied by a collection of .mp3 files for each of the problems. The audio files provide explanations, suggestions, hints, diagrams and at times animations for solving the problems. The ultimate goal is to help students become more confident in their problem-solving abilities and more independent in their approach to solving problems.

How Should I Use The Calculator Pad?

The Calculator Pad was designed to provide students an opportunity to practice solving physics word problems. The audio files are intended to not only step students through the solution to the problem, but also to help improve the problem-solving habits of students. Thus, students will benefit most if they first take the time to solve each problem carefully, using the effective habits discussed on these pages. It is strongly suggested that students get get out a sheet of paper, get organized, take their time, and work out their solution on paper. Once solved, the answer can be checked. If incorrect, an effort should be made to trace through their solution to find an error pertaining to their solution strategy, their physics, or their mathematics. If the solution cannot be self-corrected, then students should take a moment to listen to the audio file. Of course, the student should take advantage of the play/pause/continue features of the file, pausing it to check over their mathematics whenever needed. If a comment in the audio file helps to re-direct the solution process, then it is suggested that a student continue the solution from the point of re-direction. The less dependent that a student can become on the audio files, the more beneficial that The Calculator Pad becomes.

For some problems, a student might find that they get stuck before they even get started on the problem. A sincere effort should be made to diagram the problem, to identify the known and the unknown quantities and to think about relevant equations. After making this effort of getting started, the audio file should be played through once from beginning to end. After listening to the audio file, an effort should be made to solve the problem without the use of the file. Of course, if the solution is still not possible, the audio file is still there to guide a student through the solution process.

Students having frequent difficulties with the problems should take the time to read (or re-read) through the information provided in the Overview page for each problem set. These Overview pages provide background information about the physics which is involved in the problem sets. Further and more extensive information may be needed. This information is found at The Physics Classroom Tutorial . Links are provided from each Overview page to specific and relevant pages in the Tutorial. Often times, insufficient understanding of the underlying physics concepts is the cause of difficulty with solving physics problems. A good physics understanding is often an essential prerequisite for effectively reading a problem and interpreting the meaning of the words.

Ways Not to Use The Calculator Pad

The Calculator Pad has the potential of being a very useful resource to students using The Physics Classroom. But like any useful tool, improper use can render it virtually useless. The most improper uses of The Calculator Pad are those which involve inactivity. Problem solving in physics requires an active engagement in the process. Far from a spectator sport, physics problem-solving requires that a student become involved in the process - doing the reading, preparation, thinking, strategy-plotting, algebra, and calculator work. Simply listening to the audio files will do little to make a student into an effective problem solver. The audio files must be combined with practice; only then can a student have reliable feedback as to whether or not they are understanding a problem or a set of problems. Many physics students become frustrated because they thought they understood the instruction of their teacher, but did little about the instruction until the day of the test. Understanding the instruction of a teacher may only indicate that the teacher understands the material and be able to communicate that understanding in a simple and meaningful manner. Yet the understanding of the material only emerges within the student when they do something about the material which was presented. The Calculator Pad, like many of the materials at The Physics Classroom website, were designed with the intent that the student would do something about the material in order to check their understanding.

A Note about Significant Digits

Some physics teachers place a strong emphasis upon following the rules of significant digits when dealing with numerical quantities in laboratory work or problem solving. While some calculators have a Significant Digit feature that can be enabled and disabled, most students are unaware of its existence. As such, a student who performs the operation 5.3 divided by 9.8 on the calculator will receive the answer 0.5408163265. While the calculator is performing the mathematical operation properly, it is failing in the area of significant digits. Consistent with the accepted rules for performing multiplication and division operations, the number of significant figures on the final answer is equal to the least number of significant figures on the two numbers which are used in the operation. Thus, 5.3/9.8 is equal to 0.54. The amount of precision on the answer is limiting by the amount of precision on the two numbers used to determine the answer.

In the same manner, a student who performs the operation 0.06795 subtracted from 1.28 on the calculator will receive the answer 1.21205. Again, the calculator is performing the mathematical operation correctly but failing in the area of significant digits. Consistent with the accepted rules for performing addition and subtraction operations, the number of decimal places on the answer is equal to the least number of decimal places on the two numbers which are used in the operation. As such, 1.28-0.06795 is equal to 1.21. The amount of precision on the answer is limiting by the amount of precision on the two numbers used to determine the answer.

Throughout The Calculator Pad, every effort has been made to follow the rules of significant digits. Once an answer is determined, it is rounded to the proper number of significant digits and reported to that degree of precision. In some instances, when it is perceived that students may have difficulty recognizing such a rounded answer, a brief note is included within parenthesis indicating that the reported answer was obtained by rounding the numerical value reported on the calculator. Such an answer might be expressed as

370 N (rounded from 373 N)

In instances in which several mathematical operations are performed before the final answer is obtained, the rounding to the proper number of significant digits has been performed after the final step. Every effort was made in The Calculator Pad to carry through unrounded numbers from the intermediate steps until the final answer was obtained.

Perhaps the most important note to make about significant digits is to warn students (and teachers) not to major on minors . The proper number of significant digits is NOT the main thing. As the saying sometimes goes: the main thing is to make the main thing the main thing . And the main thing is to learn effective problem-solving habits which help students to become more successful and more confident problem-solvers. The comments included here regarding significant digits are in part intended to help students recognize that their calculated answer of 373.24981 N is the same answer as 370 N whenever the mathematical operation include two digits of precision. The difference existing between the answer on their calculator panel and the answer reported at The Calculator Pad does not indicate an error on the part of the student; the difference represents the rounding of a calculated answer to the proper number of significant digits. Students will need to learn to not take their calculated answers literally .

And The Biggest Unsolved Problems In Physics Are...

When a researcher asked nobel prize winning physicists and other scientists whether there was any new physics left to discover, this is what they said..

energy-burst

The story has been told many times. At the beginning of the 20th century, physics seemed essentially solved. One or two puzzling phenomena like the photoelectric effect and concerns over black body radiation had scientists scratching their heads but a general feeling prevailed that solving these issues would be dotting the iā€™s and crossing the tā€™s.

In the event, these seemingly minor problems required an entire revolution for the laws of physics. And the result ā€” quantum theory and relativity ā€” have become cornerstones of modern science and provided the intellectual bedrock for our 21st century world.

That raises an interesting question for young researchers looking for potential revolutions of the future. For them, the question is: what are the most interesting unsolved problems in science today?

Now they have an answer thanks to the work of Suzy Lidstrom at Texas A&M University at College Station who has compiled a set of answers to this question given by some of the planetā€™s leading thinkers. By asking these researchers ā€” Nobel prize winners and aspiring young researchers among them ā€” whether there will be new physics, she has created a fascinating insight into the ā€œbig problemsā€ of physics and into the opportunities, challenges and potential missteps ahead.

Cosmic Mysteries

The paper begins with William Philips, of laser cooling Nobel Prize fame, arguing that the universe promises new physics galore because only about 5 percent of it is visible to us. The properties of the rest, in the form of dark matter and dark energy, are entirely unknown, and so will offer a rich vein of discovery for science.

Gerrard tā€™Hooft, with an electroweak interaction Nobel Prize under his belt, takes up the baton with the knotty problem of topological phenomenon in physics and its potential for future discovery.

The composition of the galaxy, Solar System, the Earth plus everything that exists on it are determined by the elements produced in some of the most violent processes in the universe ā€” supernovas, the collisions between neutron stars and between black holes. But scientists know little about the way matter behaves in these events so predicting the abundance of elements is hard.

That will begin to change when an experiment called FAIR ā€” the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research ā€” comes online in 2027, as explained by Karlheinz Langanke, a theoretical nuclear physicist at the Technical University of Darmstadt, in Germany, and one of the driving forces behind its construction.

One refreshing perspective is the iconoclastic view of Jim Baggot who decries an over-obsession in modern physics with topics such as string theory and the multiverse. He points out that discussion on these topics is largely metaphysical because there is little or no experimental evidence to inform thinking. Science would be better served, he suggests, by focusing on solid state physics or quantum information ā€œwhere new physics is happening all the timeā€.

Others point to the nature of entanglement and the problem of how the measurement of a quantum state in one part of the universe can instantaneously influence the state of another in a distant region of the universe. Nobody knows how this happens.

And, of course, no discussion of unsolved problems would be complete without asking how the brain works and what approach will help unravel the mysteries of consciousness.

These are truly profound problems that will require partnerships with biologists, linguists, computer scientists, neuroscientists and others. Whether the physics community is well prepared for these kinds of collaborations is left unanswered.

Nature of Information

A fascinating corollary is the discussion of the role of information in the nature of life. One way of thinking about reproduction is as the transmission of biological information from one generation to the next. Lazaro Castanedo and colleagues point out that in the 20th century, engineers led by Claude Shannon developed powerful models for describing the transmission of information from one location to another. They ask whether the specific problems of information transmission in biology might help develop this classical theory of communication even further.

And so on. This is a fascinating paper that sets out many of the biggest problems in physics in a way that largely avoids verbosity and so is easily accessible.

There is another problem that this paper perfectly demonstrates but fails to mention explicitly ā€” the gender bias in physics.

A quick look at the list of authors makes this bias all too clear and Figure 1, showing many of the authors at a meeting in Prague, is an embarrassment of elderly, white men. Shamefully, thatā€™s probably a fair reflection of the state of modern physics.

If the community really has the ambition to take on the mysteries of the universe in all their glory, it will need all the expertise it can get. That means regardless of gender, race and ethnicity.
