How do satellites help during floods?

Weather satellites, like those in NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R ( GOES-R ) series, keep an eye on atmospheric events that can lead to flooding.

For example, the GOES-R series satellites are equipped with an instrument called the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI), which can detect and monitor the formation of atmospheric rivers. The ABI can also determine the amount of total moisture in the atmosphere from the ground all the way to the top of the atmosphere. This provides useful information for weather forecasters to improve predictions for heavy rains and flash flooding and help people stay safe.

After flooding occurs, weather satellites can also be used to spot heavily flooded regions from space. Information from GOES-R and the NOAA-NASA Suomi NPP satellite can be used to create “flood maps.” These maps help officials quickly determine where to send help and resources during a flood.

Introduction:

Flood, simply put is an overflow of water from several sources. The nature of the world is to have dry land and water. When water gets on dry land in large quantity flood is said to have occurred.

Causes of Flood:

There are several events that can lead to a flood.

How Flood Affects our Environment:

Although pluvial flooding does not involve a lot of water, it causes massive destruction of the environment and the infrastructure.

Dams are constructed to be able to hold the water that is flowing downwards from an area of land that is higher. Global warming is believed to have a very major effect on the ice caps at the poles and it is believed that the situation is only going to get worse with time.

Another type of floods is the inland flooding . In the case of inland flooding, the area witnessing a rainfall get flooded with the roads and lanes all filled with water. This happens usually when proper drainage system is not in place or is inefficient due to severe blockages which obstruct the flow of water and leading to flooding of lanes and roads in the city. Again, Delhi and Mumbai are cities which see such floods even after an hour of continuous rainfall. People living in coastal areas are prone to coastal floods . These floods are usually caused by high tides or Tsunami which bring huge volumes of water on the land thereby flooding it. Another reason for coastal floods is global warming due which the rise in sea level temperatures has led to the subsequent rise in water level in coastal areas. Coastal areas of Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Orissa witness such floods every year.

Deadliest Floods in Indian History:

India witness floods every year in different states. In fact, some regions are sure to be flooded with the onset of monsoon season. However, there have been occurrences of the flood which have caused massive destruction and hence are termed as the deadliest floods. Hence there is a need to know about them so as to understand and analyse what can be done in order to minimise such destruction in future years.

Deadly floods are a common occurrence in India after every few years. One of the deadliest floods in recent times was the flood in Gujarat in the year 1979 in the Machhu Dam-II. The Machhu Dam-II flopped on Aug. 11, 1979, discharging the full power of the Macchu River on the town of Morbi. The flood thus created in western India caused somewhere around 1,335 deaths, as per the Press Trust of India at the time.

Another of the deadliest floods in India is the one that shook Bihar in the year 1987 in the Kosi River. In any case, the Kosi River is prone to floods and is flooded almost every year. However, this year was particularly exceptional. The most decimating surge in Bihar’s history happened in 1987, when an avalanche obstructed the Bhote Kosi River, making it surge and crush more than 1.7 million homes. As per the statistics of the state, government flooding led to the death of 1,399 individuals and 5,302 animals.

The Tsunami that struck coastal India in the year 2004 was another such disaster which engulfed a number of lives. An extent 9.0 quake under the Indian Ocean on Dec. 26, 2004, set off a tidal wave that crushed southern India. As per the Government statistics 10,749 individuals died, 5,640 went missing and 2.79 million people were affected by the wave. The Recent Kerala and Kedarnath Floods:

With the recent back to back occurrences in Kedarnath and Kerala, it is high time the Government as well all of us sit down and think what harm we have done to nature. The blooming of industrial units with no waste management in place, the inefficient drainage system and the careless attitude of both the Government and the people are all collectively responsible for these disasters. Not all disasters can be avoided, but, at least measures can be taken to minimise their impact or at least the ones caused by own carelessness can surely be avoided. It is for own good and for the benefit of future generations that we all do our bit to protect the life on earth from the backlash of nature.

Flood Causes, Effects, & Prevention Essay for Children

Flood is an overflow of water on land. It causes sometimes because of overflow of river water, it also causes due to heavy rainfall and overflow becomes out of limit.

During flood condition of people and animals becomes very critical. Always it is not necessary that because of heavy rainfall flood occurs; it can also be caused due to storm and tsunami in coastal areas.

All the heavy rainfalls flow to low land and rivers, and when the water over flows the river banks then that is called as flood. Sometimes it also causes due to melting of snow on mountains. And when it reaches to the surface it causes flood.

Causes of flood

Mostly flooding occurs due to heavy rainfall, during this time natural water becomes the reason for flood and also on land if the capacity of water fills then the overflow of water takes place.

It is not necessary that flood is always caused due to heavy rainfall, there are other reasons as well for the cause of flood such as

Storm surge
Tropical cyclone
High tide coinciding with higher than normal river levels
Dam failure
Earthquake triggering in downstream area
Ground cover
Tidal influences

Effects of flood

Flood can cause devastating consequences to environment, people and economy.

Economic effects

In the time of flood most of the roads, bridges, farms, and houses gets damaged. It affects the daily routine of travelling. Most of the automobiles get destroyed because of flood. People become homeless and finds new place for their survival.

For people it becomes very hectic to restart their schedule. Due to it transportation gets affected. It takes years to rebuild the new infrastructure damaged due to flood.

Environment

When flood occur environment also suffers a lot. Most of the chemicals those got damaged due to flood gets contaminated in water and pollutes water. Chemicals also contaminate in bodies and affect our body.

Flooding also causes massive leakages in nuclear plants and because of it high radiation causes and radioactive pollution causes. Flood causes killing people animals and plants. It affects people a lot economically, mentally and physically.

It destroys the natural balance of life and ecosystem.

People and animals

Many people and animals get affected due flash flood. Many of the people get injured and many people become homeless. Disruption of water and electricity makes people suffer and struggle a lot. Flooding brings lots of disease and infections including pneumonia, fever and dysentery. It water snakes and insects causes a lot of havoc.

Sometimes flood comes all of a sudden. And the people who are not prepared for flood suffer a lot sometimes their belongings get flushed away and sometimes people become homeless. Floods destroy crops in the field and also cause epidemics. Many people loss their resources and tools. Often entire families get washed away in flood.

Flood also damages railway lines and affects the transport.

Prevention from flood

Humans are unable to stop the rain fall, but they can do something to get prevention from it.

Sea defence walls

To prevent nature from high tides sea wall and tide gates are built. Sand bags are placed in strategic areas to retain flood waters.

Retaining walls

To control and save extra water during floods in some area retaining walls are made like dams, lakes, ponds and reservoir so that they store water in it.

Town planning

Before buildings are built it is necessary to check that ways of water are not blocked. Drainage systems should be kept free from objects that chock them. Drainage system should be covered to prevent insects and other animals from getting into the container.

Trees, grass help to protect the land from nutritious free. People use the method of vegetation to protect themselves of moving flood water.

Without the proper knowledge it becomes very difficult for people to survive from flood. Education is very important to inform people about the dangerous effects of flood. Without proper knowledge it becomes very difficult for people to get cure.

Flood relief measures

During the time of flood the government of India adopts various methods to prevent the people from suffering. They provide short term and long term relief. Short term relief means immediate relief like food, cloth and medicines. Long terms mean free distribution of remission of rent.

All this requires great engineering and heavy expenses. Government also provides funds.

In spite of bad effects of flood there are good effects of flood as well. The flood that occurs in floodplains and farm fields has good effects.

Essay on Flood; Causes, Effects & How to Avoid Flooding

The earth is our planet. The dry land is the important source of survival. when there is plenty of water inundating dry land in large amount, or excessive amount of water covering dry part of land is called flood.

Floods are mostly caused in monsoon season when level of water in water bodies increases. Which breach onto dry land. It is a natural calamity which cause vast damage in both rural and urban areas.

Causes & effects of floods

The main cause of flooding is heavy rains. Due to excessive rainfall near coastal areas the amount of water in rivers increases which overflow on dry land and people living near to rivers lose their houses and crops.

The absence of trees on the surface of dry land makes floods more worse and damages crops. The level of salinity rises in fertile lands and turns arable land into infertile lands.

The melting of snow and ice in arctic and pacific regions also cause floods. The rise in sea level also results in flooding. As the world is facing global warming, due to climate change and global warming, the frozen snow and ice is melts.

Due to melting excessive water reaches into rivers and seas which overflows and cause high level of destruction in near by areas. The increase in atmospheric temperature melts glaciers and ice caps increase water level in seas which mostly cause floods.

The poor drainage system is considered main cause of floods. In most of the big cities of the world, where there is congested population there the drainage system is very poor which do not drain rain water properly, it also result in flooding.

Flood is devastating natural disaster which not only affect our environment and infrastructure but destroys food and shelter of thousands of living organisms and makes people homeless and result in scarcity of food.

When there is flood half of the crops cultivated during monsoon season are lost and makes fertile land barren for long period of time.

It becomes very difficult to grow crops in the presence of large amount of water on dry land. Thus dry and fertile land become infertile. The erosion of soil is also a big damage caused during floods.

The cattle also get affected due to floods. Many animals die and become homeless. Thousands of men also lose their precious lives in heavy floods. In addition to it, the communication and transportation of world is badly affected due to floods.

The impure and dirty water of cities reaches into pure water bodies and contaminate pure water. Many water borne diseases are caused due to polluted water.

Loss of drinking water makes lives of thousands miserable. Apart from it many diseases like malaria and dengue are caused by mosquitoes because mosquitoes thrive and reproduce more in water.

Ways to avoid flooding

The most effective way to stop flooding is to build good drainage system. There is also need of establishing effective weather forecasting system to help evacuate flood prone areas. It will help control the financial and loss of lives and help reduce level of destruction.

Plantation and healthy nature can help reduce the risk and destruction of floods. Presence or trees can help stop direct floods. Government must take action and stop encroachment of river beds.

The natural course of rivers is affected more which results in floods. There is need of creating water storing areas like dams, ponds and lakes. Water reservoirs are necessary to store excessive water of rivers and seas.

Floods are natural calamities, mostly caused by heavy rains , global warming and earthquakes which destroys crops, homes and cause diseases.

The increasing temperature of earth is a signal to incoming floods. Let’s plant trees and stop global warming to help prevent the risk of floods.
