Spanish 101 and 102 prepare students to achieve basic proficiency in the language and understanding of Hispanic cultures.  Spanish 101 begins this process of building and developing the new language system by engaging students in learning activities that address listening, reading, writing and speaking through independent study. This course is designed to maximize your language-learning potential. To be successful (which means learning to use Spanish meaningfully in practical situations), you will need to stay motivated and practice regularly each week. Time, dedication, and personal discipline are essential to take advantage of this online opportunity to learn to understand and speak Spanish.

How will the course appear on my transcript?

You may enroll at any time and have up to 9 months to complete this online course. The credits earned will be recorded on your UND transcript based on the date you registered for the course. It will appear on your transcript in the same way as a course taken during a regular semester. There is no indication that the course was taken online or that you completed it at your own pace.

Summary: Rocket Languages is great if you’re not on a budget and are after a comprehensive, classroom-style course covering Latin American culture. 

The Rocket Spanish course is full of useful, everyday Spanish and it closely resembles classroom-style teaching.

Classes consist of audio lessons of around half an hour each for a total of over 120 hours of lesson time per level.

Lessons are structured like conversations featuring a learner and a native Spanish speaker. The dialogue is then broken down and the grammar and vocabulary are explained.

With most courses focused on the beginner to intermediate level, it’s a great way to squeeze in some useful and practical study —like this course on essential beginner’s Spanish for getting around .

You can find tons of them with a quick search. Some courses even come with free letters of participation and badges of completion if you want something to document your learning.

Summary: Language Transfer is an excellent course for beginners looking to learn through an unconventional method. It’s audio based, making it good for hands-free learning, and you only pay if you want to!

Known as “the thinking method,” Language Transfer is the brainchild of linguist Mihalis Eleftheriou , who once described his job as “pummeling my brain with languages.”

The course is wholly listening-based and involves transferring your English capabilities to Spanish. Because of this, it’s most suitable for learners who are fluent in English.

The concept is rather novel, natural and highly effective: You take Spanish cognates and verbs and transfer them from English to Spanish.

With this combination of methods, you can achieve that native tone, boost your memory and sharpen your listening skills all in one place.

Founded by a memory expert and a neuroscientist, the content is memory-focused, and you can  access ample content with a free account.

Memrise serves as a great supplementary resource to your Spanish learning and is a popular choice for many beginner to intermediate learners who are seeking to establish a solid basis in Spanish vocabulary.

Summary: If you don’t mind sifting through the Coursera database, you can find some really effective Spanish courses here—and pretty much for free.

Coursera offers several Spanish online courses for learners.

Although there isn’t as much variety for complete beginners, you can access some excellent courses from reputable institutions on this platform if you’re an intermediate or advanced learner.

One of the best ones is the University of California’s basic course for beginners , which is broken up into five stages.

Despite offering courses from top universities, Coursera gives you more flexibility than an actual college course, as you can move through the materials at your own pace.

It’s also mainly free, which is always a plus for a college course.

Cost: $24/hr for private tutoring; $77/month for group classes

Summary: If you want to learn quickly, for free, and you don’t mind old-fashioned and bad-quality audio, then the FSI courses on Live Lingua are for you.

They’re particularly useful if you want South American Spanish and if you already have a good base to start with.

Live Lingua has taken the FSI (Foreign Service Institute) language courses and enhanced them for learners .

These now free courses were once used by the United States government to prepare diplomats and foreign service workers for their roles abroad. The recordings aim to provide usable, digestible, ready-to-go phrases applicable in the real world.

With over 50 hours of free online Spanish content and a six-month recommended course time, this resource is great for a crash course in Spanish , especially if you’re planning to visit or move to South America.

It can be a little boring and old-fashioned, but the resource is great to use if you want to learn quickly and for free. I’d advise getting a speaking partner on Tandem or a similar app. And don’t forget to supplement your studies with a little grammar practice for a more holistic approach to the language.

Summary: Coffee Break Spanish is one of the more relaxed, entertaining options for Spanish courses. It covers a vast range of topics over four difficulty levels for free, with the option to upgrade to premium for transcripts and lesson notes.

A personal favorite, the Coffee Break Spanish podcast offers audio material for beginner to intermediate learners in easily consumable doses of 15-20 minutes (more or less) per episode.

The award-winning resource is incredibly well-known in the Spanish learning world and has already been extensively covered online. So if you haven’t done so yet, it’s time you stuck those earphones in, went for a walk and let the hosts guide you from simple vocabulary to complex sentence structures, step by step.

Mark and Cara are engaging, humorous and best of all, entertaining. This makes for an enjoyable listening experience episode after episode.

Summary:  Mango Languages teaches vocabulary starting from square one  using repetition.

A native speaker will teach words and phrases, frequently asking the learner to recall the words and practice pronouncing them. The program uses a lot of repetition —think flashcards, but with audio.

You can choose whether to learn Castilian or Latin American Spanish (or any other of the 70 languages on offer), and the lessons go fairly quickly—they can be done whenever you have a few minutes to spare .

This program is available online or as an app. You can even check with your local library to see if it’s available to you for free .

Summary:  A great option for auditory learners who are also interested in learning about Spanish culture.

Notes in Spanish began as a podcast that talks about Spanish culture, food and many other topics (in Spanish) from beginner to advanced levels.

These can enrich your knowledge of the world and of the Spanish language at the same time.

The audio episodes are free, and accompanying worksheets and other materials are available for purchase.

The 15-20 minute lessons are ideal for convenient practice that takes about as long as a coffee break, and they build on each other nicely. This makes for focused, convenient practice that’s easy to pick up whenever you’ve got a few free moments. One nice feature in the WLingua Spanish course is that it offers support for learners studying Lating American Spanish as well as those interested in pronunciation and vocabulary specific to Spanish as it’s spoken in Spain. Unlike Duolingo, WLingua doesn’t offer all of its content for free and requires a paid subscription for full access. That said, you will still be able to get quite a bit of practice for free. WLingua also has some pretty great grammar practice — something you won’t find so much of with Duolingo. Though we haven’t had the chance to fully test the course, this grammar practice matched with the resource’s spaced repetition and logically progressing lessons make it worth considering.

The founder of 1001 Reasons to Learn Spanish is Juan Fernández, an ex-professor of Spanish at the University of London who now dedicates himself to creating quality resources online. Juan is from Spain, and so his courses use and teach Spanish as it’s spoken in Spain, but the lower level material will be mostly relevant for all learners. Juan is an animated, skilled teacher, and he’s produced a ton of content for Spanish learners, including two other courses, a podcast, YouTube videos, and a graded reader series. His teaching is all in Spanish, but he uses props and gestures to make material that’s suitable for learners of all levels.

Busuu is a digital language-learning app with over 90 million registered users. The resource offers vocabulary and grammar practice through short, self-paced study exercises. It also has a social aspect that allows users to get writing and pronunciation feedback from native speakers. It is available on the web, iOS, and Android.

Spanish With Paul Course

Spanish with Paul is a video course that has over eighty hours of content to work through. The in-depth explanations will certainly give you a great foundation and understanding of Spanish grammar, vocabulary and sentence structures. While the course is not that fun and you don’t get any speaking practice, I’d say it is definitely an effective way of learning the language if you are a serious and dedicated learner who doesn’t get bored easily.

The freshman dorm quality varies but upperclassmen dorms are top notch. D1 sports (esp basketball scene) is hard to come by at a small school. The career services are unmatched. When applying for internships, I feel I always have an advantage just because of all our seminars, workshops, and on-site cover letter and resume editing. Freshman: Tufts is an excellent school with lots of freedom to explore your passions. The professors are excellent and care about each student individually. There are lots of clubs to choose from and people are always welcoming. The campus vibe is very nice and laid back generally. Everyone is very passionate about some subject which is inspiring to be around. The dining halls are not amazing but Kindelvan and the other cafes are very convenient. Some of the activities can be hard to join as freshmen because it can be competitive but gets easier to get involved in later years. The dorms are not fancy but they certainly aren’t bad in general. People are quirky and a little nerdy but it keeps it interesting. In my experience, financial aid is also one of the best available. Overall I highly recommend going to Tufts! ... Read 1,075 reviews

Free Spanish courses online not only help you learn new Spanish vocabulary, but also train your ear to the sound of Spanish. Check out these 10 awesome resources.

Loecsen’s free Spanish course online is ideal for beginners. They cover about 20 topics, so it’s perfect to get started and listen to Spanish. They teach phrases that are easy to memorize. If you’re looking for Spanish courses with audio to practice your listening, this is a great option.

Every topic has vocabulary read by a native Spanish speaker and includes cute drawings for new words. You enter the site, choose an interesting topic, and start learning right away! 

Take a quiz to see how much you’ve learned and progressed. This user-friendly option is perfect to learn the basics for free.

2. Learn Practical Spanish Online

Learn Practical Spanish Online is an interactive program with classes based on your skill level. The site is free and requires no membership. It focuses on conversational Spanish, which is ideal if you’re looking to speak Spanish for travel and real-world scenarios. 

Learn Practical Spanish Online offers lessons for beginners, as well as intermediate and advanced students. Review nouns, adjectives, sentence structure, possessives, verbs, and other useful topics. Their free Spanish lessons include reading exercises to test your knowledge.

3. Future Learn

Future Learn is another free Spanish course online that’s ideal for those who know no Spanish at all. It requires you to sign up for a free account. They add new courses on a regular basis. The site also has intermediate content to broaden your Spanish vocabulary. 

Palma Mackenzie runs this course, and she has been teaching Spanish for over 14 years. The beginner course takes about 4 weeks to complete. 

While the courses are free, an optional certificate of achievement costs $59. Learn how to greet others, talk about your career, discuss where you’re from, and gain other useful information in the course.

4. StudySpanish.com

StudySpanish.com is a language-learning site that offers free courses in Spanish pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, verb tenses, travel help, word of the day, and more. Their free Spanish courses online have three levels. Their audio lessons include a transcript to help train your ear to the rhythm of Spanish. 

They also include cultural notes, verb drills, and audio assistance, which is perfect if you’re new to the language. They offer one-on-one classes and a free 7-day trial.

5. FSI Spanish

FSI (Foreign Service Institute) was developed in the 1950s to give American diplomats an understanding of the Spanish language before going to work in Spanish-speaking countries. This comprehensive course is now free and available to download.

The material is somewhat dates, so it is ideal to combine with additional material or Spanish classes. Nevertheless, the audio content is worth checking out. FSI’s courses are in-depth, free, and easy to download. 

Memrise is one of the most popular free Spanish courses online. This course is for those looking to brush up on your Spanish if you’ve studied before but didn’t keep up with the language. It helps students build a strong vocabulary by using flashcards and repetition. 

The site’s user-friendly platform covers topics such as useful phrases chosen by native speakers, videos, and memory techniques. As one of many resources to become a Spanish speaker, Memrise offers high-quality free material. They offer a premium course for $59 per year, but the free material is enough to get started. 

7. Language Transfer

Language Transfer is a free language-learning site for beginners looking to find out how Spanish works. They have 90 audio lessons that last about 10 minutes each. The topics include vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. 

During the Spanish audio lessons, the teacher narrates the content, and the language is explained in depth. It is not a traditional method, but it does go deep into Spanish explanations. If you’re an auditory learner, this is perfect for you.

edX offers an open free Spanish course provided by MIT and Harvard. They offer customized courses for students’ individual needs. If you’re looking to improve your employability, this option is perfect because these courses culminate in professional certificates. While the courses are free, you do have to pay for a certificate if you choose to get one.

If you’re looking to study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country, they have a unique travel course. The intermediate to advanced free Spanish courses online focus on pronunciation, grammar, conversational skills, and structure. 

9. University of Texas 

The University of Texas at Austin offers a vast index of free Spanish resources for beginner, intermediate, advanced, and superior levels. Every lesson has videos, grammar, vocabulary, phrases, and podcasts. 

The beginner material contains 15 tasks. Each includes an interview so that you can listen to native speakers of Spanish. For more advanced students, the material focuses on role plays. This course includes a comprehensive grammar index with an emphasis on expression, grammar tips, and pronouns. All the resources are completely free. 

10. The Spanish Experiment 

The Spanish Experiment is an engaging website that offers language classes, as well as children’s stories like Three Little Pigs and Chicken Little. Read the Spanish translation of classic stories. These courses help you practice your Spanish speaking skills and learn familiar phrases and words in Spanish. What’s more, they offer free Spanish audio lessons where you can review greetings, question words, definite and indefinite articles, adjectives, weather vocabulary, plurals, and much more.

The professional minor in business Spanish is intended for students who wish to consolidate and improve their knowledge of Spanish in several business areas. The main aim of the minor is to teach students how to use specific business terms in Spanish and to handle selling techniques, negotiation strategies, product presentations, commercial activities, marketing and business correspondence in Spanish. Students acquire a greater knowledge of Spanish as well as deeper understanding of Spanish or Hispanic societies and their business cultures.

The minor comprises one linguistic component, one elective component, one translation/interpretation component and three profession-specific linguistic components.

Minimum Grades

A student must receive a minimum grade of “C-” for course credits to count toward any major or minor in the Department of FLLC   .

Illinois teen entered college at 10, now has doctorate at 17 from Arizona State

Dorothy Jean Tillman II’s participation in Arizona State University’s May 6 commencement was the latest step on a higher-education journey the Chicago teen started when she took her first college course at age 10.

In between came associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

When Tillman successfully defended her dissertation in December, she became the youngest person — at age 17 — to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health at Arizona State, associate professor Leslie Manson told ABC’s “Good Morning America” for a story Monday.

“It’s a wonderful celebration, and we hope … that Dorothy Jean inspires more students,” Manson said. “But this is still something so rare and unique.”

Tillman, called “Dorothy Jeanius” by family and friends, is the granddaughter of former Chicago Alderwoman Dorothy Tillman .

When most students are just learning to navigate middle school, her mother enrolled Tillman in classes through the College of Lake County in northern Illinois, where she majored in psychology and completed her associate’s degree in 2016, according to her biography.

Tillman earned a bachelor’s in humanities from New York’s Excelsior College in 2018. About two years later, she earned her master’s of science from Unity College in Maine before being accepted in 2021 into Arizona State’s Behavioral Health Management Program.

Most of her classwork was done remotely and online. Tillman did attend her Arizona State commencement in person and addressed the graduating class during the ceremony.

Tillman told The Associated Press on Tuesday that she credits her grandmother and trusting in her mother’s guidance for her educational pursuits and successes.

“Everything that we were doing didn’t seem abnormal to me or out of the ordinary until it started getting all of the attention,” said Tillman, now 18.

There have been sacrifices, though.

“I didn’t have the everyday school things like homecoming dances or spirit weeks or just school pictures and things like that … that kind of create unity with my peers,” she said.

She has found time to dance and do choreography. Tillman also is founder and chief executive of the Dorothyjeanius STEAM Leadership Institute. The program includes summer camps designed to help young people in the arts and STEM subjects.

She said her plans include public speaking engagements and fundraising for the camp, which Tillman said she hopes to franchise one day.

Tillman is motivated and has innovative ideas, said Manson, adding, “And truly, I think what is inspiring is that she embodies that meaning of being a true leader.”

Jimalita Tillman said she is most impressed with her daughter’s ability to show herself and her successes with grace, but to also understand when to “put her foot down” when choosing between social outings and her education.

College Football Playoff locations: CFP National Championship headed to Las Vegas in 2027, per report

The game will mark the first time that las vegas hosts the biggest game of the college football season.

The 2027 College Football Playoff National Championship is expected to take place in Las Vegas where a national champion for the 2026 season will be crowned, according to The Action Network . The decision has not yet been made official by the College Football Playoff, but "Sin City" playing host to the game is reportedly a "lock." 

Las Vegas will be the 11th site to host a CFP National Championship and the fourth in the Western part of the United States. Others include Los Angeles, Phoenix and the Bay Area. The 2025 and 2026 title games are set for Atlanta and Miami, respectively, both of which represent returns to previous title game sites. 

Many aspects attracted the CFP to Las Vegas, headlined by the pristine Allegiant Stadium, which opened in 2020. The city boasts cheap travel and nearly unlimited hotels and venues, making logistics far easier. The Super Bowl traveled to Allegiant Stadium for Super Bowl LVIII in February, which saw the Kansas City Chiefs topple the San Francisco 49ers in a 25-22 thriller. The 2028 Men's Final Four will also take place in Las Vegas.

The CFP hoped to land in Vegas for the 2025 title game, according to the report. However, Vegas hosts the massive Consumer Electronics Show, a major event in the city that brings 200,000 people and gobbles up hotel rooms. The expanded College Football Playoff should bring more flexibility around the dates. 

The Las Vegas site comes with some controversy due to the city's history with gambling. College athletics has been dealing with the rise in gambling over the past several seasons, headlined by a group of Iowa and Iowa State players getting suspended for gambling on their own teams in 2023. NCAA president Charlie Baker has loudly come out in support of eliminating prop betting on college athletes. 

All levels of sports have slowly started to come around to Vegas as a destination, however. The location boasts both NFL (Raiders) and WNBA (Aces) franchises and is expected to add MLB's Athletic's in the coming years. The Pac-12 and Mountain West have also played conference championship games in Vegas, and the Big 12 plans to host its 2024 media days in "Sin City."

While Las Vegas is almost finalized, sites for the following three years are still under negotiation, according to the report. The Vegas title game will represent the first under the new television contract, which kicks off during the 2026 season. The format for the College Football Playoff field has not been decided but will include at least 12 teams.
