Can Entrepreneurs and Governments Team Up to Solve Big Problems?
In 2017, Shield AI’s quadcopter, with no pilot and no flight plan, could clear a building and outpace human warfighters by almost five minutes. It was evidence that autonomous robots could help protect civilian and service member lives. But was it also evidence that Shield AI—a startup barely two years past founding—could ask their newest potential customer, the US government, for a large contract for a system of coordinated, exploring robots? Or would it scare them away? Harvard Business School professor Mitch Weiss and Brandon Tseng, Shield AI’s CGO and co-founder, discuss these and other challenges entrepreneurs face when working with the public sector, and how investing in new ideas can enable entrepreneurs and governments to join forces and solve big problems in the case, “Shield AI.” Open for comment; 0 Comments.

Model-based financial regulation challenges for the net-zero transition

Inequality in economic shock exposures across the global firm-level supply network
Thurner and colleagues explore how economic shocks spread risk through the globalized economy. They find that rich countries expose poor countries stronger to systemic risk than vice-versa. The risk is highly concentrated, however higher risk levels are not compensated with a risk premium in GDP levels, nor higher GDP growth. The findings put the often-praised benefits for developing countries from globalized production in a new light, by relating them to risks involved in the production processes

Mason Thieu is a third-year undergraduate at Princeton University studying economics, with minors in applied and computational mathematics; statistics and machine learning; and computer science. He is currently working on a junior research paper investigating the effect of extracurricular involvement on juvenile delinquency. Mason is very grateful for his mentors, Professor Stephen Redding and Professor Zachary Bleemer, for whom he works as a research assistant, and Professor Leeat Yariv and Professor Nobuhiro Kiyotaki, who taught him the joys of microeconomic and macroeconomic theory respectively. His primary research interests are in applied microeconomics, the economics of education, and health economics. After graduation, Mason hopes to go to graduate school directly or work as a predoctoral researcher at the Federal Reserve, Opportunity Insights, or wherever allows him to apply his economics knowledge for good. He enjoys reading, running, and playing clarinet!
The Cost of Money is Part of the Cost of Living: New Evidence on the Consumer Sentiment Anomaly
Unemployment is low and inflation is falling, but consumer sentiment remains depressed. This has confounded economists, who historically rely on these two variables to gauge how consumers feel about the economy. We propose that borrowing costs, which have grown at rates they had not reached in decades, do much to explain this gap. The cost of money is not currently included in traditional price indexes, indicating a disconnect between the measures favored by economists and the effective costs borne by consumers. We show that the lows in US consumer sentiment that cannot be explained by unemployment and official inflation are strongly correlated with borrowing costs and consumer credit supply. Concerns over borrowing costs, which have historically tracked the cost of money, are at their highest levels since the Volcker-era. We then develop alternative measures of inflation that include borrowing costs and can account for almost three quarters of the gap in US consumer sentiment in 2023. Global evidence shows that consumer sentiment gaps across countries are also strongly correlated with changes in interest rates. Proposed U.S.-specific factors do not find much supportive evidence abroad.
