The spread of South Korean popular culture across the globe, known as the Korean Wave, has signalled a significant challenge towards the traditional one-way flow of media culture. This study applies agenda-setting effect, which has been largely applied to political communication, to the domain of mass-produced popular culture. It explores how Korean media’s news coverage of the popularity of Korean TV drama in China influences not only the first and second agenda-setting effect but also Koreans’ perception of Chinese audiences. The findings suggest that the Korean Wave could serve as a form of reversed cultural diplomacy by promoting soft power in East Asia.

In the current article, I examine the continuing fascination with the outstanding success of Korean popular culture beyond national and regional borders, known as the Korean Wave or Hallyu, through the mediatized emotions of shock and surprise. More specifically, by studying emotions, I employ Erving Goffman's seminal work on stigma and its management to understand the ambivalent reception of this so-called global success. For this purpose, I follow the media coverage of Korean popular culture by one of the mainstream media stages, the New York Times, measuring the emotional tone of its 112 items between 2002 and 2021. By identifying and analyzing three major categories-(1) enchantment with a cultural "miracle"; (2) fascination with fans; and (3) disenchantment because of global success but local failure-I question the celebration of non-Western alternative cultural globalization from the margins as, by definition, an ambivalent and partial project.

The purpose of this article is to introduce and discuss Korean communication with an emphasis on mass media research in the context of globalization. The American influence on this discipline will be focused on, and the current discussion between indigenization and globalization will be introduced. Lastly, some weak and strong signals for the future of the discipline will be proposed. The main sources are major Korean journals related to the theme in the last few years.

This article examines the changes and developments of the Korean government’s attitude to the Korean Wave, connecting with the notion of cultural diplomacy. It investigates presidential speeches and statements as well as other governmental documents between 1998 and 2014 because they represent and establish guidelines applying to cultural policies. By analyzing presidential statements with the notion of cultural diplomacy, it explores the government’s reinterpretation of this transnational, hybrid cultural content into national products, thereby appropriating them as tools of improving national images. Throughout the research, this article connects presidents’ viewpoints with their subsequent cultural policies, thereby finding fundamental perspectives framing cultural policies vis-a-vis the Korean Wave.

This article analyzes several distinctive Hallyu contents to determine whether "transnational proximity" based on similar sociocultural experiences, including social inequality, youth culture, and fascinating choreography in the late-stage capitalist society, instead of traditional cultural proximity, works as a major frame in understanding the global popularity of the Korean Wave. Here I articulate whether transnational proximity works as a new theoretical framework for explaining the nascent flow of Korean popular culture in the global cultural sphere.

Korean popular culture and its digital technologies are everywhere. From Japan and China in East Asia, the U.S. and Canada in North America, and to Chile, Argentina, and Brazil in Latin America, many global fans currently enjoy Korean television dramas, films, popular music (K-pop), and digital games. Once small and peripheral, Korea has now emerged as one of the most significant non-Western hubs for the production and circulation of transnational popular culture and digital technologies. Taking on non-Western local forms, Korean cultural and digital creations have rapidly become global sensations, as is especially illustrated by the music group BTS’s worldwide success towards the end of the 2010s and the early 2020s.
