"Change is the law of nature." A journey by train is very pleasant if the berths are reserved before, but it is very uncomfortable if the berths are not reserved before. We should always plan our excursions and get our seats reserved before undertaking the journey.

During the last summer vacation, my father and I traveled from Ludhiana to Shimla by train. We got comfortable seats because we had got our seats reserved.

Our compartment was packed to the full. There were all sorts of people--rude, polite, shy, and talkative. Some passengers were playing cards.

Some were smoking cigarettes. Some were sitting quietly, while others were reading newspapers.

At Rajpura, a poor, blind beggar came into our compartment. He sang a very sweet song and begged for alms. Some kind people gave him a little money. Then a vendor came in. He sold some sweets, cold drinks, and other eatables.

I amused myself by looking out of the window. The scenery was very charming. There were green fields on either side. Here and there I saw boys playing and cattle grazing. At some places, farmers were plowing their fields.

We passed many stations on the way. After about three hours we reached Ambala Cantt. There the train stopped for about ten minutes. There was a great rush. The cries of the vendors were very amusing. We had some fruit and sweets by way of lunch. After about two hours the train reached Chandigarh. It was quite a big station.

Then the train started and entered the mountainous region and reached Kalka. At Kalka, we boarded a small train. Near it are the Shivalik hills. It passed through several tunnels in the hills. It went uphill in a zigzag way rising higher and higher. It was a lovely view. The green fur-clad hills in the distance looked very beautiful. This scenery was very charming. Every turn of the rail track revealed new views. My heart left with joy.

At last, the train reached Shimla and we got down and went straight to my uncle's house. It was a very pleasant journey.

Introduction:- I went Mumbai in December, 20XX to attend the marriage of my cousin. I had booked my ticket for Rajdhani Express which left New Delhi at 5:00 pm.

Preparations:- I started packing 3 days before so that I might not forget to keep all the essential items. I checked the ticket and put it in the wallet along with ID card.

Scene at the Platform:- On the day of journey, I booked a taxi and reached the railway station an hour earlier. The railway platform was full of passengers along with loads of luggage. Vendors were trying to sell their items like tea – biscuits, samosas, bananas etc.

Scene in the Train:- Finally, the train arrived, people rushed to get into their coach and set the luggage. My ticket was confirmed so I waited patiently. Among my co-passengers there was a group of students who were talking and joking loudly. Some people were reading the newspaper, others were busy with their family.

The End of the Journey:- The train took 14 hours to reach Mumbai. In the morning at 7:00 am, I got down and saw my cousin standing at the platform. We went out and got into his car to reach his home comfortably.

Conclusion:- I enjoyed the journey very much. It was a nice experience for me.

When and why was journey performed :- My friend invited me to come to him in Delhi. I accepted his invitation happily and I started towards the Meerut railway station on 20th May, this year. I purchased a general ticket for Delhi.

Journey by Bus Essay – Normally, we most of the time believe that, as far as sightseeing is concerned, a journey by boat is the most pleasurable, because such a journey generally allows us to enjoy the natural scenery with ease of mind. But a journey is concerned more with feeling than with observation. And much can be enjoyed and felt when a sense of motion is combined with the process of observation and enjoyment. The dimension of motion, indeed, can add new elements of pleasure to a journey. Looked at from this angle of view, a journey by bus can be thought of as a source of immense pleasure and experience. And undoubtedly it is. Now I would like to give a specific account of such a journey I took several months ago.

It was the month of Agrahayan. We decided to go to my maternal uncle’s home at Bagerhat from Rupsha.

Instead of going there by train, as usual, we this time decided to enjoy a different experience of going there by bus. It will be a good journey, we thought and will be enjoyable, therefore. We bought four tickets for a luxury bus service. One morning my parents, my younger sister and I set out for the journey.

Our bus started for Bagerhat at nine O’clock in the morning. It was a bright sunny morning. Our bus was running along the well-paved smooth road at an alarming speed.

Speed gives man a different type of pleasure—a mixed feeling of adventure, smoothness, tension, and briskness.

In the beginning, I was afraid suspecting any danger that might be caused by the horrible speed at which the bus was running. But after some time I was accustomed to it. Not only that, I must frankly say that the speed was giving me some amount of intoxication. I got a seat by the window. So I could easily see things on one side of the road. On each side of the road there were thousands of trees of various kinds so close to one another that their shadows covered the entire road. It seemed to me that all those trees, houses, fences and other things that stood on each side of the road were all moving backward. I could not look at anything for long. But that was no regret of mine . Taking a mere birds eye view of many things at a time, especially of natural scenery, gives much pleasure.

All the way I enjoyed my time. There was natural scenery; there was music as well as songs. All seemed very interesting to me because seldom had I taken such a journey before.

We reached our destination at 2 p.m. On reaching Bagerhat, I though I would find a seat by the window of the other side during our return journey.

Many vehicles are the invention of modern science. The bus is one of the gifts of science. Nowadays, a bus journey is an enjoyable and comfortable experience. It is always a pleasure for human beings.

We live in the port city of Chittagong. Nowadays we feel bored in the noisy atmosphere of the town. We want to enjoy the pleasures for a while and we have decided to spend a weekend in a pleasant surrounding for a change. One of my friends proposed to us to go to Cox’s Bazar for the pleasure trip.

We four friends, with the permission of our guardians, booked ourselves for the trip. On the fixed day, we reached the bus terminal at 7 a.m. The bus would start there at 7.30 a.m. The passengers were limited. We got comfortable seats.

The time was the summer vacation. The weather of the day was suitable for our journey. The bus started punctually. We crossed the Shankha Bridge’. Then our bus began to run through rural areas. We enjoyed the charming scenery of the paddy fields in the country-side. The bus ran at a stretch without stopping for about two hours. Then it stopped at Amirabad. There was a restaurant by the wayside. We took some light tiffin and all the passengers also took their tiffin. Then the bus started again at full speed. Sometimes we had pleasant talks with our fellow passengers. There were several passengers of our age. They sat beside us. Some of the passengers were sleeping and some of them were busy reading newspapers or magazines. But the natural beauty was so attractive and charming that I could not turn (take) my eyes away from it.

At about 11.30 a.m. we reached our destination, Cox’s Bazar. The bus finally stopped. We got down from the bus. The Bay of Bengal and the beautiful sea-beach came into view.

Thus our journey by bus came to an end. To me, that journey is an unforgettable experience in my life. In fact, it was a pleasant and enjoyable journey for me. It will remain ever fresh in my memory.

Introduction: Bus is a wonderful invention of science and technology. On many an occasion, I made a journey by bus. The journey I am going to describe is an exceptional one.

Occasion : I had no definite or particular occasion to make this journey. One day while I was amidst a gossiping with some of my friends, one of them put up the case of a divine Fakir named Azahar. Description of the journey: With the signal, the bus started slowly, I kept casting my eyes at the things through the window. The zigzag road runs through the villages up to Isapura, my destination, and the bus ran along it at a speed of not less than 30 km per hour. The trees, houses, fields, markets and all seemed to be running backward. When the bus was on the bridge, the houses below it looked little. Many land vehicles were running along the rugged road from the opposite direction. The bus, where was loaded with mostly unknown passengers. The hawkers in the bus attracted the passengers’ attention towards their hawking goods. Some passengers bought goods from them. With a very dramatic art, each hawker appeared before the passengers. I could not help buying two pieces of chocolates. When the bus stopped at the stoppages, a few hawkers were hawking goods. They flattered many lady passengers with a dramatic shouting.

Scene outside the bus : I saw many things outside the bus. I saw men and women working together in the field. Children and young boys were seen bathing, swimming and playing hide and trick in the water. Cowboys were tending cattle. The day was sunny. The whole field was full of green grains. I saw a brick-field beside the road through which the bus was going/running. So far as I could collect data that all passengers would go to Isapura.

In the bus : The bus danced up and downplaying along the ragged and zigzag road. In the bus, some passengers were killing time in reading newspapers, magazines, and periodicals. Some passengers were gossiping, some were under the soporific influence, some were vomiting etc.

A heart-rending sight : Suddenly the bus stopped and the driver got down. To our surprise, we looked through the window. There was a small gathering of the crowd a little far ahead. I went there with some other passengers. I saw a capsized truck beside the road and à dead body lying mashed on the heap of blood. He was a van puller. The scene was very heart-rending. When our driver found a scope he drove the bus. The bus went on running towards its destination. The bus took a turn to the left. We saw a vast potato field around us. The green leaves of potatoes looked greener. It charmed us very much. The bus crossed the potato field and there was our destination.

Destination: W e also saw many patients on the way to Fakir Bari. When the bus stopped, we got down. And thus my bus. journey came to an end.

Conclusion: A journey by bus is both interesting and pleasing. It is not so costly. It is the speedy vehicle on the land. People can go to their goals so easily by bus. It is a blessing of science. However, the impact of the journey will remain ever fresh in my mind.

 A journey by train is an interesting experience. Last Sunday I had an occasion, since I with my friend Satish had planned to visit Vaishnav Devi Mati at Jammu. We reached Delhi Railway Station well in advance and after staying in the queue for about half an hour we got the tickets. When we stood on the platform to wait for the train there were thousands of passengers with lot of luggage; children, women, youth and old were all eager to board the train for Jammu. It was really horrifying. How and where to get a seat. I asked a coolie for help. He demanded a hundred rupees to get proper seats for us. I agreed and the train stopped before us. It was a mad rush. Everyone tried to catch hold of a seat. The coolies know the knack of the job. All my efforts to board the train failed. It was impossible. My coolie managed to enter through a window and put our luggage on a seat. Anyhow we reached there and sat down. All around the passengers were standing. There was not any space to move around. The things started to settle down when the train moved. We had a breath of fresh air. The train moved at high speed and we were soon out of Delhi. It was much pleasing outside. The lush-green fields and trees seemed to welome everywhere. The train passed through many villages, towns and cities. It was very interesting to observe the rural life of India. It was very nice to see men, women and children working in the fields. The rural India seemed to be prosperous with all urban facilities available with them. Good houses, roads, schools and colleges, markets and bazars were seen everywhere. The people seemed happier than the urbanites probably because the life did not seem to be so complex as we experience.

The train stopped at many stations. We took many cups of tea and enjoyed some seasonal fruits sold there. We had an occasion to make friends with some boys in the cabin. They were also going to Vaishnav Devi Mata. We shared some eatables and it was good to converse with them. One of them was from Bangalore doing a course in Engineering and the other studying law in Delhi. We spent a good time and at last late in the evening the train reached Jammu. One of our friends there received us at the station and he took us to his home. Being very tired, we had a good meal and went to bed immediately.

A Journey by Train Paragraph: A journey keeps a man away from the monotony of everyday’s routine bound life. Once I had the opportunity to enjoy a journey by train from Dhaka to Chittagong.

My annual examination was over. I feel like having rest and recreation for some days. One of friend DK Palash requested me to attend his sister marriage ceremony at Chittagong and I agreed. Two other friends also joined with us.

On the appointed day at about 7.00 AM. We started from our residence to the Kamlapur railway station . The station was very crowded. Somehow, we managed to purchase tickets and got on the train. At 8.00 AM the train started to move.

The train was running very fast. It seemed to me that the houses, trees and everything on the road side were running backward. When the train started from Feni station, I saw the hills of Chittagong. The journey thus proved tedious and I could not enjoy it. The journey lasted for right hours.

It was 4 PM when we reached Chittagong railway station. A friend was waiting for us at the station. I felt thrilled remembering the charms of that journey. This journey will remain every fresh in my heart.

During the last few days, I also happened to visit the Lahore Railway Station in order to receive my friend who was coming from Karachi by ‘The Shalimar’. The train was due at 10:00 p.m. and I reached the respective platform at 9:50 p.m. in a jubilant mood as my friend was coming to me for at least after two years. I was quite eager and curious to see him and observe the physical changes that might have taken place in his personality. There was a great hustle and bustle all over the platform. Men, women, and children have thronged the place. Passengers who wanted to travel to different destinations were buying tickets and many were waiting for their respective trains while standing along with their luggage.

The Koppenberg hasn’t always smiled on Mathieu van der Poel . In November 2018, still a few months away from transferring his cyclocross talents to top-level racing on the road, the Dutchman endured a torrid afternoon on its slopes at the Koppenbergcross.

After lumbering home in 21st place, an almost unthinkable four minutes down on the day’s winner, Van der Poel could only shake his head in resignation. Even though he had won the race the year before, his relationship with the steep cobbled climb at its heart was always an uneasy one. “No,” Van der Poel said that afternoon. “This is not my climb.”

At the Tour of Flanders on Sunday, by contrast, the Koppenberg, like the race itself, belonged to Van der Poel alone. The combination of vertiginous gradient and rain-slicked cobbles forced almost the entire field to unclip and walk, but Van der Poel, inevitably, made light of the climb and the conditions, forging his record-equalling third Ronde victory on its slopes.

With a shade over 44km remaining, the world champion made what proved to be the race-winning attack by launching a seated acceleration on the steepest pitches of the Koppenberg. Behind, only Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease A Bike) and Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) made it up the climb without unclipping, but they were already competing in a different race to Van der Poel.

“I knew once it started raining that the Koppenberg would be chaos,” Van der Poel explained when he took a seat in the press conference afterwards. “When all the other teams started attacking us, I asked my team to create a controllable situation until the Koppenberg, because I knew from there I would be alone anyway. I think they did an amazing job.”

By his telling, Van der Poel hadn’t even intended to attack on the Koppenberg. But these days, in the midst of his imperial phase on the road, the Dutchman gives the disquieting impression that he is able to ride away from his rivals without even realising it. Once he glanced over his shoulder at the summit and saw he had a 10-second buffer over Jorgenson, the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider seemed to figure he might as well win it there and then.

“We’ve all seen the images of the Koppenberg from the past and what a chaos it is when it’s wet. And I also knew from cyclocross what it’s like when it’s a bit muddy there, so I knew it would be a crucial point,” Van der Poel said.

“I started in front at the steepest part of Koppenberg just to stay out of trouble. It was super slippery and really difficult to get traction there. It was not really the plan to be alone from there on, but yeah, there was no way back.”

Seemingly condemned by his raw strength to attack from distance, Van der Poel quickly established an insurmountable lead over his pursuers. He had 24 seconds by the time he crested the Steenbeekdries, and that gap yawned out to a minute atop the Taaienberg. By that point, Van der Poel was no longer racing against his contemporaries, but against history itself as his lead inched towards the two-minute mark, a margin unseen since the days of Eddy Merckx.

There was, however, a mild sting in the tail for Van der Poel, whose efforts finally began to take their toll after he had hauled himself up the Kwaremont and Paterberg for the final time. For a moment, he even feared a hunger flat of the kind that saw his challenge unravel in the rain at the Yorkshire Worlds in 2019, but he righted himself beneath the deluge to reach Oudenaarde more than a minute clear.

“I was crawling towards the finish, I wasn’t even close to the powers I normally ride in the end,” Van der Poel said. “It makes me think a bit of Harrogate, to be honest. The circumstances were a bit the same. I was quite empty and that was maybe the hardest Ronde I’ve ever done.

“There were attacks from far, the first hour was quite fast, there were rainy conditions, we had to go full on every climb… It was a really hard one. I don’t think I was ever so happy to see the last kilometre.”

As well as the lingering threat of a  fringale , Van der Poel had to negotiate an unruly home crowd on the Kwaremont, where he was doused in beer and jeered by some spectators, as he had been at the cyclocross in Hulst last winter. He shook off the incident when asked about it afterwards. “I was busy with winning the race,” he said, “so I couldn’t care less, to be honest.”

Van der Poel lined up at this Tour of Flanders as the overwhelming favourite for victory, but the absence of the injured Wout van Aert arguably complicated his task here, given that the weight of controlling the peloton fell entirely on his Alpecin-Deceuninck team.

It proved to be a most unruly race, with contenders Jorgenson and Pedersen already tested the waters with 110km remaining, but the world champion never really looked like being outflanked. His flex on the Valkenberg, when he stitched the race back together with a solo effort, had the feel of an early admonishment to his rivals.

“We knew already other teams would start attacking from super far away,” Van der Poel said. “My team did a super job keeping it under control. That’s all I asked for today, because I knew at a certain point the strongest would have to battle it out.”

Van der Poel’s third Tour of Flanders victory sees him equal the record jointly held by Achiel Buysse, Fiorenzo Magni, Eric Leman, Johan Museeuw, Tom Boonen and Fabian Cancellara. The outright record looks firmly within the grasp of a man who has now placed on the Ronde podium five years in succession, and never finished lower than fourth. Next Sunday, meanwhile, Van der Poel has the chance to complete a Ronde-Roubaix double in the rainbow jersey, like Rik Van Looy in 1962.

“Records are not something that keep me occupied, my career is already way more than I would have expected,” Van der Poel said. “I’m really fucked right now, so it will take time to realise what I’ve done. It’s something I could never have dreamed, to win the Ronde as world champion. That’s something special.”

The conditions were fitting for the the second Monument of the season—arguably the best of the bunch. The 2024 Ronde van Vlaanderen brought more thrills as we continue to chug through the best part of the cycling season.

Here’s how both the men’s and women’s races played out at the 2024 Tour of Flanders.

Van der Poel captures record-tying third Flanders victory

Mathieu van der Poel won the 2024 Tour of Flanders, making his definitive move with 43 kilometers to go, and once he did, he left no doubt about it.

It was a vintage cycling scene up the brutal cobbled Koppenberg with 43km to go in the race. It was there that it was all blown apart. Van der Poel laid waste to the rest of the field up the treacherous climb, that gets as steep as 22% at its worst. While many of the riders had to dismount their bikes and try to run up the hill, van der Poel (have you heard he’s a cyclocross star?) stormed ahead. His advantage only grew after that, and it quickly became apparent that it was a race for second.

The world champion and Alpecin-Deceuninck leader solo’d for the last hour of the race. It’s van der Poel’s third win at the Tour of Flanders, tying six others for the most wins in the Momument’s history.

Pedersen tried some interesting tactics to try and steal it from van der Poel. The Ghent-Wevelgem winner from a few weeks ago gapped the peloton with over 86km to go. He was able to establish an advantage over 25 seconds, but was eventually reeled back in before the Paterberg.

Luca Mozzato (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) was a surprise second place, out-sprinting a strong field of riders at the end to grab a podium spot, 1:02 behind van der Poel. Nils Politt (UAE Team Emirates) was third in the same time with Michael Matthews (Team Jayco-AlUla) relegated.

9 years after her first Flanders victory, Longo Borghini wins for a record second time

While the men’s race lacked drama in the final hour, the women’s race packed a ton of action into the last 45 kilometers, once the riders got on the nasty Koppenberg. In the end, Elisa Longo Borghini sprinted to the win—with the help of a teammate—to win the Tour of Flanders for the second time in her career, nine years after winning the race in 2015.

Longo Borghini won a three rider sprint to the finish over her Lidl-Trek teammate Shirin van Anrooij and Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon–SRAM). Van Anrooji provided the leadout for Longo Borghini, who seized the opportunity at the end and out-sprinted Niewiadoma for the victory.

Longo Borghini is the fifth rider to win the Tour of Flanders twice. No rider has ever won three. It was a 1-3 finish for the Lidl-Trek squad to cap off a big day for the team.

The Koppenberg proved to be a pivotal moment in the race. The unbelievably steep climb—made no easier by wet and rainy conditions—claimed many victims. It broke the race apart, with two-time defending champion Lotte Kopecky, as well as her SD Worx-Protime teammate Demi Vollering, among many others losing ground

Those two, along with van Anrooij, were able to make their way back to the lead group. Van Anrooij wasted no time and launched an attack off the front when the chasers rejoined the lead group. From there, she was able to gap the field.

With 12km to go, Longo Borghini and Niewiadoma caught van Anrooij, and the chase group—including Kopecky, Vollering, and Marianne Vos—didn’t have the power to bridge the gap to the three leaders and it set up to be a three-rider race to the finish.

Longo Borghini handled the Koppenberg well, and rode arguably the most consistent race of the other contenders in the race. Surely, that helped her in the end, as she was able to catch van Anrooji for the run into the finish, and sprint to the win.

There was no three-peat for the world champion Kopecky, who won Flanders in 2022 and 2023. Going for a record third win in the classic, she spent much of the latter part of the race chasing down gaps. Vos took fourth, winning the sprint of the best of the rest on the day.

The Blue Route runs to the south and west of Oudenaarde and is the shortest ride of the three signposted routes. But if you want to get straight into those famous cobbled climbs then start here because within the first hour or so you will have encountered none other then the cobbles of the Oude Kwaremont, the Paterberg and the famous Koppenberg climb – a short sharp welcome to a Flanders cycling route!

Having conquered these initial bergs you can’t help but feel captivated by Flandrien cycling and this part of the world – you feel you’ve arrived somewhere very special.

This ride also gives you your first introduction to a well used and worn cobbled road namely Mariaborerestraat – pan flat for nearly 2.4 kilometres and a completely different challenge to riding uphill as you’re travelling more quickly and as such balance and bike handling skills become more of a factor.

We felt the Blue loop was the perfect introduction to a cycling tour of Flanders and later celebrated with a bottle or two of the local Kwaremont beer which incidentally contains 6.6% of alcohol and apparently matches the gradient of a particular part of the climb!

All metrics in this article are approximate.

The high point for us can be summed up in one word – Koppenberg. We had heard so much about it, read about it, seen it each year on television and watched numerous videos about those famous 682 cobbled meters. We both felt our heartbeat increase and the hairs on our neck stand on end as we approached the village of Melden. And there it was – very understated and lacking any form of fanfare – a simple sign, white on brown that simply said ‘KOPPENBERG’. With a rush of adrenaline, we swung into the climb thinking of Cancellara, Sagan, van Avermaet and Boonen.

That was before the gradient hit, our speed decreased to a virtual standstill and our legs started screaming with every pedal stroke…

But around four (long) minutes later there was huge relief and exhilaration as we stopped at the summit. We had conquered the Koppenberg – and it felt great.

NB Incredibly, local professional Dries Devenyns of Quickstep took only 1 minute 40 seconds to complete the Koppenberg climb and at the time of writing holds the record. It took us “a little” longer.

Route notes

1. oudenaarde to oude kwaremont and koppenberg: 0-23 km.

The first few kilometres are flat and gentle and are perfect for getting into the ride. At just under 10 kilometres you leave the river path and swing left to approach the Oude Kwaremont.

Oude Kwaremont – this is a 2.5 km semi-cobbled climb at an average gradient of 3% with a maximum of 11%. 

It is also one of the most famous Flemish hills due to the fact that it is often ridden three times during the Tour of Flanders so it is seen more than most climbs on television. The Oude Kwaremont climb is not the steepest of climbs, but the third ascent is strategically placed towards the end of the race. The road then meanders north through narrow and twisting country roads and lanes and within the space of the next 10 kilometres or so you will encounter:

Kalkhoveb erg – 250m asphalt descent at 14% (max 18%)

Paterberg – 361m cobbled climb at 12% (max 20%)

There is a 60 cm rainwater gutter that runs all the way up the left-hand side of the Paterberg. If you need a short break from the bone-shaking cobbles, then it’s an option! Unfortunately for the professionals, in the race, the crowd barriers are placed in this area meaning there is no escaping from the cobblestones.

The locals tell you that the reason the Paterberg was eventually included in the Tour of Flanders was that a wealthy farmer who lived on the berg was irritated that all the action and publicity in the race was centred on the nearby Koppenberg, so he decided to turn the Paterberg into a cobbled climb with a ferociously steep gradient! His wish came true as in 1986 the parcours of the Ronde van Vlaanderen first included the Paterberg and it has now become a regular feature in the race, with the second and final pass of the climb being only 13 kilometres away from the finish in Oudenaarde.

Koppenberg – 682m cobbled climb at 9% (max 19%)

Also known locally as the “Bump of Melden” (it’s just outside the village of Melden), we’d suggest a better name would be “Koppenberg Mountain”. In any event, Belgium’s Koppenberg has been listed as a national monument, is a highlight of the Ronde Van Vlaanderen and is considered by many cyclists from all over the world as ‘holy ground’. It’s recognised as one of the toughest cobbled climbs in Belgium. It has seen many trials and tribulations over the years with many crashes and accidents. If you watch the classics on TV, you will often see professional riders walking up to the top of the climb, as after a crash the gradient makes it impossible to remount and continue.

There is usually a race to the bottom of the hill purely for position. You are faced with a 90 degree turn in the village of Melden as you are about to enter the berg, so the pace slows to almost a standstill with riders funnelling onto the climb, all searching for the right gear.

The gradient increases sharply from 12 to 20% within the first 200 metres as you pray that the wheels in front don’t slow or stop because of the narrowness of the lane and as such if you get baulked then your momentum is likely lost.

2. Koppenberg to Taaienberg and ronse: 23-44 km

The cobbled fun continues as the route winds north and then turns abruptly south where just before the town of Maarkedal you are faced with Mariaborrestraat which is a 2.4kilometres stretch of flat cobbles which will test both your body and suspension (read our tips on riding the cobbles, here !). The climbs then come thick and fast as you head further south towards the town of Louise Marie;

Steenbeekdr ies – 700m cobbled climb at 6% (max 7%)

Stationsberg – 900m cobbled descent at 3% (max 10%)

Taaienberg – 530m cobbled climb at 6% (max 15%)

The Taaienberg, another listed monument, is known locally as “Boonenberg” after three-time Tour of Flanders winner Tom Boonen who used to use the Taaienberg to launch attacks upon his rivals in the race. As with the Paterberg there is a rainwater gutter (right-hand side) that can be used to climb this berg as an alternative to riding on the cobblestones.

Muziekberg – 625m asphalt climb at 5% (max 10%) 

This climb takes you through the Muziekbos Forest and up to high ground overlooking the town of Ronse. You will probably be glad to reach the Muziekberg as it is quite refreshing to actually get back to ascending on asphalt and giving yourself some temporary respite from the effect of the jarring cobbles.

Kanarieber g – 1050m asphalt descent  at 9% (max 13%)

Another famous berg, but on this occasion, you will be hurtling downhill as you continue your route into Ronse. Before you descend, however, you have the chance to stop at the Bistro Boekzitting for refreshments – it sits at the very top of this climb.

3. Ronse to Oudenaarde: 44-78 km

Ronse’s beautiful market square and surrounding art-deco houses provide a number of cafés and restaurants for a sit-down meal or simply to refuel (more details below).

As you leave the town the Kruisberg then hits you straight away, a 1875m cobbled climb which will test your legs after a café stop at an average gradient of 4% with a maximum of 9%. Four asphalt climbs remain as the journey takes you west to the River Schelde and back north to your starting point.

Hoogberg – 2975m asphalt climb at 3% (max 8%)

Knokteberg – 1100m asphalt descent at 8% (max 13%)

Mont de l’Enclus – 1025m asphalt climb at 7% (max 12%)

Kluisberg – 925m asphalt descent at 6% (max 14%)

A word of warning about Mont de l’Enclus, the penultimate climb of the day – it is a real leg tester. At a whisker over one kilometre long, it has an average pitch of 7% with a maximum of 12%. You will need to hold something in reserve but, once negotiated, you can enjoy a relatively flat 20 kilometres ride back into Oudenaarde where you’ll want to celebrate with a nice, cold Koppenberg beer!

  • We suggest using the town of Ronse as an opportunity to refuel. The Flanders countryside is made up of country lanes, farmland and small rural communities – there are not that many places to stop to eat and drink and we found plenty that were closed when we were there on weekdays in the middle of March.
  • Remember when picking your lines on the cobbled roads that they are open to normal vehicular traffic. Often the best line may appear to be on the other side of the road or even on the crown – so you need to remain vigilant.
  • The Koppenberg is also very famous in the cyclocross world, for the Belgian Koppenbergcross which takes place each year here.

Average gradient.

The ‘bump’ of Melden, as the Koppenberg is locally known, is guaranteed to add suspense to the Ronde, every year. Not surprisingly it has been listed as a national monument. This hill and over 100 acres of surrounding countryside add up to one the most beautiful natural hotspots in the Flemish Ardennes.

The Koppenberg is also probably the most difficult climb in the region, combining maximum gradient of 20% with rutted, worn cobbles and a constantly greasy surface. There's no shame in having to stop. Better men than us have had to walk up here. Legend has it that the climb was introduced to the Tour of Flanders organisers by 2 time winner Walter Godefroot, but only after he'd retired so he wouldn't have to race up it.

Fans of the Tour of Flanders will be denied another showdown between Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease A Bike) this year, after the Belgian sustained multiple fractures in a heavy crash during Dwars door Vlaanderen.

It leaves Van der Poel as the clear favourite, with on-song Dane Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) stepping into the breach as the rider most likely to challenge the imperious Dutchman.

With reigning champion Tadej Pogačar from this year's startlist, the two men will feel more confident. But a Classics win is always reliant on a certain amount of luck, and Van der Poel and Pedersen certainly won't have it all their own way.

Meanwhile the women's race is also something of a clash of the titans, with two-time winner and defending champion Lotte Kopecky and her SD Worx-Protime team-mate forming a potent pairing who will nevertheless have to contend with the likes of Dwars door Vlaanderen winner Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease A Bike) and British hopeful Pfeiffer Georgi (dsm-firmenich PostNL) among others.

This year sees Antwerp take over from Bruges as the alternating host city of the race. The route remains broadly similar to previous years, with greater use of wider roads early on to help prevent crashes being the only change.

For the men, the first berg of 17 will be the Oude Kwaremont, tackled after 137km of racing, while the Wolvenberg at the 72km point is the first of 12 such tests in the women’s race. The Wolvenberg is where both men's and women's races converge, after which the climbs come thick and fast.

It's the final one-two punch of Oude Kwaremont and the Paterberg that often proves the most decisive. Controversial when first devised in 2012, particularly as it meant the omission of the iconic Muur van Geraardsbergen, this finale has since won fans over with its own unique character, which is also influenced by the double punch of the long, gradual Kwaremont and the short yet ultra-steep Paterberg.

This year's men's race continues the annual trading game between Bruges and Antwerp, with the latter hosting the start on Sunday. Riders will find bigger roads than before waiting for them as they begin the long haul south-west towards berg country.

The fun begins with the first of three passes of the Oude Kwaremont, and the climbs come thick and fast after that as the race follows a spaghetti-like parcours around the hills of Flanders just south-east of the finish town of Oudenaarde. On the way they take in famous climbs including the Wolvenberg, Molenberg, Berendries and the Koppenberg on the way to a total 17 climbs, finishing with the one-two of the Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg with 13 flat kilometres to the line.

The women begin in Oudenaarde, where both races finish. They first head north-east away from the city to complete a circuit of the flatter terrain around Zottegem, looping back towards Oudenaarde to begin the day's climbing at 72km with the Wolvenberg. A similarly serpentine route to that of the men sees them tackle a total 12 classified climbs, including the Molenberg, Berendries and the Koppenberg, along with that final Kwaremont/Paterberg one-two at the end.

Tour of Flanders 2024: Riders to watch

Mathieu van der Poel Alpecin-Deceuninck ***** The Dutch rider looks imperious this season – always at or near the head of affairs in every race he has ridden and with a win at the E3 Saxo Classic and second at Gent-Wevelgem under his belt already. He's had a mercurial last couple of seasons, but covered himself in glory in the Classics last year and seems to be set to repeat the feat this time around. The fact that Wout van Aert has now been ruled out – albeit in very unfortunate circumstances that VDP would not have wished for – won't exactly hurt his chances either.

Tiesj Benoot Visma-Lease A Bike *** With Benoot's team-mate and compatriot Wout van Aert recovering from a nasty crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen and other team-mates like Dylan Van Baarle having been ill, this could be Benoot's opportunity to step up from nearly man to winner at Flanders. He has been fifth here before – back in 2015 – and won Strade Bianche in 2018 . With a following wind and a bit of luck a podium, or even a win, here is not beyond him.

Mads Pedersen Lidl-Trek **** The Dane was third here last year and eighth the year before that. Considering that he seems to be in the form of his life – and the absence of one of his main Classics rivals, Wout van Aert – what's to say that Pedersen cannot finally achieve victory in what is one of the most revered one-day races of the season. Pedersen proves himself to be ever-more versatile, with overall wins in the Etoile de Bessèges and Tour de la Provence stage races, plus the more recent Gent-Wevelgem already this season.

Lotte Kopecky SD Worx-Protime ***** Of all the cards the Belgian team could play, right now Kopecky looks like the most likely to bring them success. She has been a playmaker in pretty much every race she has entered this season and already has four wins under her belt, including Strade Bianche . Riding alongside her, and even for her, will be at least four other potential victors – Demi Vollering, Marlen Reusser and Lorena Wiebes – ready to take over if Kopecky falters.

Elisa Longo Borghini Lidl-Trek **** The Italian has amassed a huge palmarès across Classics and stage races alike, despite spending most of her career riding in the company (under the shadow?) of greats like Annemiek van Vleuten and Anna van der Breggen. She has Lotte Kopecky to deal with these days, but that hasn't stopped the 32-year-old from putting in a solid shift so far this season already, with podiums at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Strade Bianche, and a win at Trofeo Oro in Euro.

Kasia Niewiadoma Canyon-SRAM **** The reigning gravel world champion was left heartbroken after missing out on a podium spot at Strade Bianche earlier this month. That was her most recent result, and one she may be eager to atone for at the Tour of Flanders this weekend. She was fifth here last year – the latest in a litany of top-10s stretching back 10 years. The Polish rider looks to be on form, with five top-seven finishes out of six race days this season, though there is of course the small matter of the SD Worx team standing between her and a win at Flanders.

Koppenberg in the big ring – A first-timer’s perspective of the Tour of Flanders

Cyrus Monk's first Monument was an eventful one.

“Sorry about the music,” says Cyrus Monk as he steps off the Q36.5 team bus in the backstreets of central Antwerp. Inside the bus, frantic Euro beats are blasting – a stark contrast to the relative quiet in this part of town. It’s around 9am on Easter Sunday.

Finding the Q36.5 team bus wasn’t easy. Where the biggest teams have prime real estate, their buses parked alongside the Scheldt river, right near the Tour of Flanders start line, Monk’s smaller, second-division team is in a secondary parking area with a few other smaller teams, a few blocks away, on the fringes of Antwerp’s red light district.

This is a big day for Monk. It’s his first Tour of Flanders and indeed his first Monument.

“It’s pretty incredible to be here,” the 27-year-old Aussie tells me, smiling broadly. “If you had have told me a few years ago that I’d be here racing Tour of Flanders … Having lived in Belgium for so many years, been here racing, scrapping away in some far less glamorous races, to now be here is pretty incredible.”

Monk describes himself as a “regular guy” who just happened to find himself racing some of the biggest races on the planet. That’s not entirely true, of course – the Victorian is in his second year with the ProTeam-level Q36.5, after many years spent slogging away at the Continental level. But being a Flanders newbie does mean he’s had to lean on the experience of others to prepare for Belgium’s biggest race. The main difference between this race and others? De Ronde’s 270 km length.

“I think the intensity has been so high in all the races we’ve done and from what others have said the intensity is actually a little lower here but the length is so much longer that everyone’s completely dead at the end anyway, so they can’t quite go as hard,” Monk says. “But the way things have been recently in the cycling world I’m not banking on the intensity being that much lower. I think everyone can just ride full gas everywhere now.”

Monk isn’t one of the highest-profile riders in the Tour of Flanders; far from it. But to those familiar with his journey, he’s known as a breakaway specialist, a tireless worker for his teammates, a musician , a science communicator … and the proud owner of one of the peloton’s finest mullets. This spring he’s found himself racing a full Classics program, most visibly with a ride in the breakaway at Gent-Wevelgem . Getting up the road is something he’s hoping for again at the Tour of Flanders.

“[Our] Classics team has just been decimated by injuries so we’ve lost our leaders so the goals have had to change a little bit,” Monk says, his arms crossed to keep himself warm in the morning chill. “Just get that exposure in the front … and also it gets you further into the race if you’re just getting that head start on the best guys before they light it up on the climbs. So I’ll definitely be trying but I think about 100 guys will be doing the same thing.”

Talking to Monk it’s hard not to notice the sizeable scabs he’s sporting. A big one on his shin, a bunch on his hands.

“I crashed at the start of E3 with about half the peloton,” he says. “It wasn’t on TV so no one saw that one but yeah it has taken a lot of riders out of the Classics as well. But it’s just part of the sport now. It’s not something I like but it’s just something that happens.”

Recovering from that crash has made for a rather suboptimal lead-in to De Ronde. And it’s not just road rash he’s had to overcome. 

“[With] the long day in Gent I’ve just worn out one of the tendons in my leg so it hasn’t been ideal and not good timing for it,” he says. “I’ve been doing a lot of work with the docs and physios and it’s felt alright the last few days. I’m just hoping it holds up for six hours today.”

And while breakaway is a big goal, just making it through the entirety of the race’s six hours will be challenge enough.

“Really just to finish for me would be amazing,” he says. “For me to finish will mean that I have to be active in the race, I think, because if you’re just trying to follow wheels, you get too far behind the race when there’s splits and crashes and that kind of stuff. So both goals sort of tie in together and yeah, to finish the first Monument and such a hard Monument would be pretty crazy.”

Monk is one of the first riders up to the startline a short time later, reserving his place at the front to maximise his chances of getting in the break. After a small group gets up the road not long after the start, TV coverage shows Monk on the front on the peloton, trying to get away, trying to bridge across. 

“Plenty of teams there were trying to do the same, so we were in effect just shutting each other down,” Monk tells me a few days later. “And then other teams were happy with the break and trying to shut us down. So there was a lot of energy spent for not much there, which is a bit frustrating. 

“Last year, it took 100 km for the break to go so the direction from the sports directors was stay pretty calm for the first 20 km,” he adds. “‘Don’t use all your energy then because that’s when all the idiots will be jumping straight away’ and basically something stronger will go after that. And then of course 2 km into the race a group of eight were gone.”

Monk spends a good chunk of time dangling off the front of the bunch, trying to coax others to come with him, to bridge across. But to no avail.

“The peloton just slowly made its way back and by then I was completely spent and the gap had just been hovering between 20 and 30 seconds for so long,” he recalls. “I knew that if I was to keep going like that, then I wasn’t going to make it to the 50 km mark, let alone the end of the race. So then it was just time to switch the goals to the next objective.”

That next objective is helping his teammates get good position into the race’s crucial cobbled climbs. After retreating into the peloton for a time to recoup some energy, Monk spends around 20 km on the front of the bunch on approach to the Oude Kwaremont. As the climb approaches and the pace increases, Monk finds himself drifting back through the bunch a little.

“There was a small crash just in front of me which I stopped behind and then enough people behind me decided they wanted to take a risk and try and ride through it,” he recalls. “They ended up just riding straight into the back of me and breaking my bike.”

With Q36.5 being one of the lowest-ranked teams in the peloton, Monk’s team car is way back in the peloton. The wait for a spare bike is lengthy.

“I had to wait for all of the peloton to come past then all of the convoy and there’s nowhere to pass on that small road right at the bottom,” he says two days later. “It was about two minutes waiting for the bike and then got the spare bike. Mine’s obviously in the middle of the car, because I wasn’t one of the protected riders, so it was the hardest one to get to. And then got going again. By that stage I was last rider on the road.”

Monk rides up the Oude Kwaremont alone and starts to make his way back to the bunch. But every few kilometres he’s caught behind a crash, or a bunch of team cars attending to those who have fallen. He spends 40 or 50 km trying to rejoin the bunch, angry that his day has gone the way it has, through no fault of his own. By the time he reaches each cobblestone climb, fans are all over the road, hampering his progress. And worse, the gears on his spare bike have started to fail. What started as a nice day in Antwerp with blue skies, has turned into a thoroughly rain-drenched edition of De Ronde .

“I think just because it was so wet and filthy, I actually got stuck in the big ring,” he recalls. “So I did manage to ride like Paterberg and the Koppenberg in the big ring. But by that stage, it was pretty freezing cold and wet and each time I got to an intersection, police were trying to pull me off just for my own safety.”

Soon enough, Monk’s race is over and he’s back in the team bus, now parked near the finish in Oudenaarde. In the immediate aftermath, he’s upset at not being able to give it everything. In the days that follow though, he starts to see things a little differently.  

“I was really happy I was able to contribute quite a lot to to the team,” he says now. “And more so to have the contributions recognised. It’s the kind of job that I do so often for the team, positioning them into key sectors and also just fighting for the break, making sure that we’re present in these big races. But it doesn’t get shown often because they don’t show the first half of these races. And then suddenly everyone’s actually watching the first half of this.

“I was getting all these really, really nice comments and messages, because people are actually noticing the work that I’ve put in. So it is good to get that recognition.”

As Monk watches on in the bus, his teammate Kamil Małecki takes 14th place: “one of the team’s best results in the Classics,” Monk says, “considering how decimated we’ve been by injuries and illnesses.” The Australian’s efforts earlier in the race have contributed to a satisfying result for the team.

When we speak a few days after Flanders has finished, Monk has just finished a ride and is looking ahead to his next race: Wednesday’s Scheldeprijs, a semi-classic traditionally contested by the sprinters. More bad weather is forecast and again Monk finds himself with a sub-optimal lead-in. “I’ve been changing wound dressings because I managed to knock off all the wounds in that crash [at Flanders],” he says.

He’s not trying to look too far beyond Wednesday’s race, but all going well, there could be another Monument in his near future.

“It looks like it’s gonna be crosswind, a bit of chaos, so won’t be an easy sprint day, necessarily, like it has been in the past,” he says of Scheldeprijs. “So that’ll be a tough one. And then at the moment I’m also on the list for Paris-Roubaix, which will be super-exciting, but I don’t like to get too far ahead because anything can happen in these races.

“At the moment the main focus is for tomorrow and then as long as I get through that unscathed, then I’ll be going to hell on Sunday.”

Done in the Ronde van Flaanderen edition of 2024 (159km) in the rain and also the day before in dry training. From the village below Melden when you see it, it looks like a trampoline rising up through the forest. With rain (and mud) and people putting their foot down in the race you don't do it. You don't even do it if it's dry but the post office truck comes towards you :-)

Fatto nell'edizione Ronde van Flaanderen del 2024 (159km) con la pioggia e anche il giorno prima in allenamento con asciutto. Dal paesino di sotto Melden quando lo vedi sembra un trampolino che si innalza nel bosco. Con la pioggia (e il fango) e le persone che in gara mettono il piede in terra non si fa. Non lo si fa neppure se è asciutto ma ti arriva incontro il camioncino delle poste :-)

At the foot of the climb, at first you don't understand why this climb is described as tough, but as soon as you cycle into the forest you hit a wall of cobblestones and it becomes stomping uphill, where you have to keep sufficient pace to avoid getting stuck with your front wheel in between the shot-and-skewed cobblestones. I cycled the climb in dry weather, but would discourage anyone from riding it in wet conditions. As you come out of the forest, don't forget to take a look back as the views are stunning!

Aan de voet van de klim begrijp je eerst niet waarom deze klim als zwaar wordt omschreven, maar zodra je het bos infietst rijd je tegen een kasseien muur aan en wordt het stoempen naar boven toe, waarbij je voldoende tempo moet houden om niet met je voorwiel tussen de schots-en-scheve kasseien tr blijven steken. Ik heb de klim met droog weer gefietst, maar zou eenieder ontraden om deze klim met een nat wegdek te rijden. Vergeet als je het bos uitkomt niet om even achterom te kijken want het uitzicht is prachtig!

What a killer this is. As if the steepness wasn't enough, there are also the bad stones. Keep the front wheel on the ground and keep pushing. Once over the steepest part you see another small wall. Don't lose heart here and keep pushing and you will be there.

Wat een killer is dit toch. Alsof de steilte nog niet genoeg is, komen er ook nog eens de slechte stenen bij. Voorwiel op de grond houden en blijven duwen. Eenmaal over het steilste stuk zie je nog een klein muurtje liggen. Hier de moed niet verliezen en nog even doorbijten en je bent er.

I did this on a very wet day. Despite taking pressure out of my tyres, I simply could get no traction on the rear wheel so ended up walking! even that was difficult! I saw a car do the same and had to slide/ reverse backdown!Crazy but fun!

I personally think this is the toughest climb in Flanders. I've done it about six times already, still remains a tough one. Just get going and rake to the top.

Ik vind dit persoonlijk de zwaarste klim in Vlaanderen. Ik heb hem al een zestal keer gedaan, blijft toch een zware. Gewoon er aan beginnen en harken tot boven.

Climbed in August 2022, with my 6 year old daughter on the bike (front seat) and a bag on the carrier. Not easy to find the balance, between the front wheel lifting due to the excessive slope, and the rear wheel skidding on the cobbles. It was a close call, but it passed, with a 30*25 gear ratio (you don't have to put everything on the left side, to stay on the cobbles). Even harder than the Patterberg, but really enjoyable when you get to the top. A unique experience in a cyclist's life.

Grimpé en août 2022, avec ma fille de 6 ans sur le vélo (siège avant) et un sac sur le porte bagage. Pas évident de trouver la l'équilibre, entre la roue avant qui se soulève du fait de la pente excessive, et la roue arrière qui patine sur les pavés. C'est passé de justesse, mais c'est passé, avec un braquet de 30*25 (nécessité de ne pas tout mettre à gauche, pour rester en prise sur les pavés). Encore plus dur que le Patterberg, mais vraiment jouissif quand on arrive en haut. Expérience unique dans la vie d'un cycliste.

The Koppenberg starts quietly but quickly becomes very steep, especially when you ride into the forest. The cobbles are so bad there that it looked like I was climbing a flight of stairs. Start calmly, put enough pressure on your front wheel on the steep part, break and above all enjoy!

De Koppenberg begint rustig maar wordt al snel heel erg steil, met name als je het bos in rijdt. De kasseien zijn daar zo slecht dat het leek alsof ik een trap aan het oprijden was. Rustig beginnen, genoeg druk op je voorwiel geven op het steile stuk, kapot gaan en vooral genieten!

I was surprised to be able to climb this mythical climb without having to put my foot down because I had already done a good 100kms. This climb is a bit harder than the Paterberg at a few kms because it is a bit longer and the very steep parts are longer. The surface is slippery. I climbed it on a dry day after a few nice days. I don't think I would venture up it in winter or after rainy days, it would be too slippery.

Je me suis étonné de pouvoir gravir cette côte mythique sans devoir mettre pied à terre car j'avais déjà fait un bon 100kms. Cette ascencion est un peu plus dure que le Paterberg à quelques kms car elle est un petit peu plus longue et les parties très raides sont plus longues. Le revêtement est glissant. Je l'ai monté par un jour sec après quelques beaux jours. Je ne pense pas que je m'y aventurerais en hiver ou après des jours d'averse, ce serait trop glissant.

Yesterday 22 July 2021 I took on the ultimate challenge, climbing the Koppenberg with my recumbent Challenge Hurricane. It was a hell of an undertaking but I managed to get up anyway, my toughest climbing challenge so far. I have climbed many times before but always with a racing or a trekking bike, it was time to try it with the recumbent. I've climbed a lot with the girder and I had prepared myself by cycling up other very steep mountains (e.g. Schapenberg, Kluisberg, Mont-Saint-Aubert) and cobblestone hills (e.g. Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg). The steepest part of the Koppenberg with its 22 % and slippery cobblestones was a real test which I could barely manage at a slow 5 km per hour but with the necessary perseverance and character I managed. It tastes like more to do this first experience again. Unfortunately there was no one around to film the exploit, so I took a selfie at the bench just before the summit while cycling back down, perhaps even more challenging than cycling up these cobblestones with such a steep gradient. I thought I'd earned a bit of a breather from the hard work and the beautiful view.

Gisteren 22 juli 2021 de ultieme uitdaging aangegaan, de Koppenberg opgeligfietst met mijn ligfiets Challenge Hurricane. Het was een helse onderneming maar ik ben toch al fietsend bovengekomen, mijn zwaarste klimuitdaging tot nu toe. Al dikwijls opgefietst maar altijd met een koersfiets of een trekkingfiets, het werd tijd om het met de ligger te proberen. Met de ligger heb ik al heel wat geklommen en ik had me voorbereid door het omhoog fietsen van andere heel steile bergjes (o.a. Schapenberg, Kluisberg, Mont-Saint-Aubert) en kasseibergjes (o.a. Oude Kwaremont en Paterberg). Het steilste stuk van de Koppenberg met zijn 22 % en schots en scheef liggende gladde kasseien was een ware beproeving die ik amper aan een slome 5 km per uur kon nemen maar met het nodige doorzettingsvermogen en karakter toch gelukt. Het smaakt naar meer om deze eerste ervaring nog eens over te doen. Jammer genoeg was er niemand in de buurt die het exploot kon filmen, dan heb ik maar een selfie genomen aan het zitbankje vlak voor de top bij het terug naar beneden fietsen, misschien nog uitdagender dan omhoog fietsen op deze kasseien met dergelijke steiltegraad. Daar een beetje uitblazen van de zware krachtinspanning en genieten van het prachtige uitzicht had ik naar mijn gevoel wel verdiend.

I've ridden it dozens of times, in dry weather I've always made it to the top, in wet weather however I had to put my feet up a few times because of a pattering rear wheel, the mountain is pretty unrelenting when the cobblestones are wet for a racing bike with thin smooth tires, especially on the steepest part, once the rear wheel starts to slip you can forget it, tires with a rough profile like a mountain bike are recommended. You can also break your equipment if you have to use too much power, once I had a derailleur that went off at an angle and ended up right in the spokes. It's a ruthless calf biter that attracts and repels at the same time.

Al tientallen keren opgereden, bij droog weer altijd boven geraakt, bij nat weer daarentegen een paar keer vanwege een patinerend achterwiel de voeten moeten aan de grond zetten, de berg is wanneer de kasseien nat liggen voor een koersfiets met dunne gladde bandjes behoorlijk onverbiddelijk, zeker op het steilste stuk, éénmaal het achterwiel begint te slippen mag je het vergeten, banden met ruw profiel zoals van een mountainbike zijn dan aan te raden. Je kan er ook je materiaal op stuk rijden als je teveel kracht moet zitten, één keer een scheefgeslagen derailleur gehad die vlak in de spaken terechtkwam en één keer het binnenblad vooraan gewoon geplooid van de krachtinspanning, toen stond ik natuurlijk ook te voet. Het is een meedogenloze kuitenbijter die tegelijk aantrekt en afstoot.

This cobblestone wall is in my opinion the most difficult climb of the Flemish Ardennes. The Koppenberg is so bad that it is almost impossible to get a decent grip on the road surface. I rode it when there was a light rain shower and my rear wheel kept skidding. The steepest part is on the tree-covered part of the climb. Very tricky if you add this one at the end of a long ride.

Deze kasseimuur is in mijn ogen de moeilijkste beklimming van de Vlaamse Ardennen. De Koppenberg ligt er zo slecht bij dat het haast onmogelijk is om ergens deftige grip op het wegdek te krijgen. Ik reed hem toen er juist een lichte regenbui gepasseerd was waardoor mijn achterwiel steeds weg slipte. Het steilste stuk ligt op het met bomen overdekte deel van de klim. Enorm lastig als je deze op het einde van een lange rit er nog bij neemt.

A terrible hump of a monument where after a courageous first 250m you virtually come to a standstill. The cobblestones are bumpy and bad, you'd rather ride here on your own because the chance that you'll end up stumbling is big. Avoid in crowded and wet weather, but one that you must have done.

Een vreselijke bult van een monument waar je na een moedige eerste 250m zo goed als stil komt te staan. De kasseien liggen bol en slecht, je rijdt hier liever op je eentje want de kans dat je gaat zwalpen is groot. Vermijden bij drukte en ook bij nat weer, maar wel eentje die je moet gedaan hebben.

If you are alone the Koppenberg is doable ... However, forget it on the day of the cyclo of the Tour of Flanders, then you have to walk because of the crowds. To be honest, when I started cycling it took me a while to get the hang of it. It was mainly about learning technique and gaining strength. Practised a bit Now I go over it smoothly. But I don't do it that often. On the steepest part, the cobblestones are too bad and your wheel goes from here to there. I usually make the jump from Paterberg to Taaienberg via Kortekeer...

De eerlijkheid gebiedt me te zeggen, dat het toen ik begon te fietsen even geduurd heeft om hem onder de knie te krijgen. Het was vooral leren techniek trainen en kracht winnen. Een beetje geoefend Nu ga ik hem vlotjes over. Maar ik doe hem zelf niet zo vaak. Op het steilste stuk liggen de kasseien te slecht en kets je wiel van hier naar daar. Meestal maak ik de sprong Paterberg richting Taaienberg via Kortekeer...

This weekend I cycled the Kwaremont-Paterberg-Koppenberg trio again. I'm a local, but it's still great to look down on that cobblestone wall. The message is to start slowly, because you need all your strength on the steepest part. When you're past that, it's not over yet. I've already seen people get off at the last bend because the sponge was empty. This is by far the toughest climb in Flanders.

Rustig beginnen is de boodschap, want op het steilste stuk heb je alles nodig. Als je daar voorbij bent, is het nog niet voorbij. Ik heb al volk zien afstappen bij het zien van het laatste knikje omdat de spons leeg was. Dit is met voorsprong de zwaarste klim in in vlaanderen.

The Koppenberg is so hard, I've climbed it several times and never got past the part between the woods. When you're almost at the top, there is a small part that is a bit easier and you can switch on there and do that last part of 14%.

For me the hardest climb in Flanders! I have to prepare myself physically and mentally before each climb to get to the top. I did Koppenberg on a quiet day and needed the whole track. Don't understand how you ever get on top among a group of other cycling enthusiasts :p After the steepest part, there's a long suffering road until the asphalted part...

Voor mij de moeilijkste beklimming in Vlaanderen! Moet mij telkens voor de klim fysiek en mentaal voorbereiden om boven te raken. Koppenberg gedaan op een rustige dag en had de hele baan nodig. Snap niet hoe je ooit boven raakt tussen een groep andere fietsliefhebbers :p Na het steilste stuk volgt nog een lange lijdensweg tot het geasfalteerd gedeelte..

The view is super when you come biking with the trees tilted at the steep part. There is hardly any traffic.

But don't be mistaken about the steepness in the middle of the climb. I didn't give enough pressure to my front wheel and that was not an option on these cobblestones,...

This is really one of the must do's in the Flemish Ardennes. Cobblestones are moderate, hope for dry weather. Steep part in the forest is tricky, but do not overlook the wall that comes after.

Special climb... The rear wheel regularly slips in the joints, it's almost impossible to stand on the pedals because the rear wheel comes up and you lose all your speed. Just sit and stomp but be proud when you finally reach the top.

Bijzondere klim... Achterwiel wat regelmatig wegglijdt in de voegen, het bijna niet kunnen staan op de pedalen omdat het achterwiel dan omhoog komt en je alle snelheid verliest. Gewoon blijven zitten en stoempen maar wel trots zijn als je dan eindelijk boven bent.

Yeah, this is a tough one. It starts with the view. No idea how to conquer it. Yes, light resistance and just keep pedaling. Sometimes with a slight slip of the rear tyres. At the top really exhausted. A real dragon of a climb.

Ja, dit is een pittige. Het begint al bij het aanzicht. Geen idee hoe je hem moet bedwingen. Ja, licht verzet en gewoon doortrappen. Met soms een lichte slip van de achterbanden. Boven werkelijk uitgeput. Met recht een draak van een klim.

Done this one twice today. First along the side coming from the N60 on asphalt (warm-up) and then via Melden (the infamous cobblestones). A tip for those who ride this via Melden: if you have to stand on your pedals, lean back as far as possible. That way your weight is on the back wheel and you have less chance of your back wheel slipping.

Vandaag deze 2x gedaan. Eerst langs de zijde komende van de N60 op asfalt (opwarmer) en dan via Melden (de beruchte kasseien). Een tip voor als je via Melden deze oprijdt: als je toch moet staan op je pedalen, leun dan zo ver mogelijk naar achter. Zo komt je gewicht op het achterwiel te staan en heb je minder kans op door slippen van je achterwiel.

Last Sunday, we climbed the Koppenberg. This was the last climb on the list of our RVV loop. Must say tough at the end. Especially because it was cold and there was a lot of wind the whole day. I must say I found the Koppenberg the toughest in this loop. This is mainly because of the high percentages and the cobblestones. With these percentages you can't develop high speeds, and in combination with the cobblestones certainly not. It's like raking uphill. It's also harder to stand up on the pedals on cobblestones. Which makes it harder. Personally, I found the wall of huy harder, but that's just asphalt, but it bolts better and it suits me better too.

We hebben afgelopen zondag de koppenberg beklommen. Deze stond als laatste op het lijstje van onze RVV lus. Moet zeggen pittig tegen het einde. Zeker ook omdat het koud was en er heel veel wind stond de ganse dag. Ik moet zeggen dat ik de Koppenberg wel de zwaarste vond in dit rondje. Dit heeft voornamelijk met de hoge percentages en de kasseien te maken. Bij deze percentages kan je zoiezo al geen hoge snelheden ontwikkelen, en in combinatie met die kasseien al zeker niet. Het is naar boven harken. Zoiezo kan je ook moeilijker rechtstaan op de pedalen op kasseien. Wat het lastiger maakt. Persoonlijk vond ik de muur van huy wel zwaarder, maar dat is wel gewoon asfalt, bolt wel beter en lag me beter ook.

What struck me about the Koppenberg is that it's actually not the terribly steep part in the middle itself that makes it so hard, but mainly the fact that after this steep part you lose all speed and you have to wring out your legs completely to get your gear around. And you will feel that in the next few kilometers!

Wat mij opviel bij de Koppenberg is dat het eigenlijk niet het vreselijk steile stuk in het midden zelf is dat hem zo zwaar maakt, maar vooral dat je na dit steile stuk alle snelheid kwijt bent en je je benen volledig moet uitwringen om je verzet nog rond te krijgen. En dat ga je in de komende kilometers nog stevig voelen!

The Koppenberg is the most horrible hill I've ever cycled. In the autumn, with leaves, mud and wetness, it's not doable. I even had to put my feet on the floor. Compared to this hell on earth I found the Paterberg peanuts.

De Koppenberg is de meest verschrikkelijke heuvel waar ik ooit op gefietst ben. In de herfst, met blaadjes, modder en nattigheid is hij niet te doen. Ik moest zelfs met de voetjes aan de vloer. Vergeleken bij deze hel op aarde vond ik de Paterberg peanuts.

Last day of a weekend in Flanders I did the Oude Kwaremont, the Paterberg and the Koppenberg. And the Koppenberg is the most vicious and explosive. Sat completely broken at the end but a great climb. It's quite a shock when you see that extremely steep wall of cobblestones when you start.

A Closer Look At Flanders: The Koppenberg

There are very few climbs in modern bike racing that can bring a bike racer to his knees. With the evolution of intelligent gearings, the steepest climbs have been tamed, well, as much as they can be. The Koppenberg, however, defies all technological advances and takes us back to a time when plodding upward on foot was just as common of a means of forward movement as pedaling.

The Koppenberg’s stats are, objectively speaking, nothing to go home crying about. I know, sacrilege, you howl. Hear me out. There are climbs that are steeper, longer, even harder. It’s only 600 meters long, it averages just under 12%, and its steepest section is 22%. I’m not saying these are paltry figures, but climbs like the Zoncolan and Angliru manage figures like that for ten thousand meters. They’re debilitatingly hard, but so is the Koppenberg. There are a few things that are very, very different about the Koppenberg that set it well apart from the horror climbs of the Zoncolan and the Angliru, namely: cobbles, cobbles, cobbles, and the Ronde van Vlaanderen.

It’s not only the cobbles, but everything about Vlaanderens Mooiste (Flanders’s Most Beautiful) that makes this climb a terror. The basic nature of the race makes for a bloc racing almost from the start, and it never really lets up for over 250 kilometers. Wind, tiny, winding Flandrian roads, hellingen, flat pave sections, and the basic knowledge that this is the biggest day in Belgian cycling each year, makes for a race like no other.

It certainly doesn’t allow for climb specific gearing, nor would it be necessary for the world’s best over such a short climb. You’re never going to see a rider walk up to the start in Brugge on Easter Morning with a compact crankset.

Even if this theoretical rider (who is making present readers and purists grimace and moan as you read this) did, that might not be enough to keep him going. The steepest part of the climb is in a deep, moist trench between two fields and two fences. The moisture never seems to go away on these cobbles, and when the mixture is brewed just right, the surface is nigh unrideable. Really.

It’s not even just the numerical difficulty of the climb or that it comes 200 km into what many would say is the most difficult one day race of the year. It doesn’t matter how much gas, how much power the best racer has left when the rider in front teeters over and puts a foot down. A superstar receives the same sentence with no hope of remounting unless an eager fan helps him up and pushes him onward. For most, it’s the way of the foot.

A Climb To Be Feared Those reasons are all well and good, but when you factor in the kind of race that the Tour of Flanders is and where the Koppenberg fits into the race’s dynamics, it makes a beastly wall all that much worse.

Italian Classics specialist, BMC’s Manuel Quinziato, speaks of the Koppenberg with an almost reverence, “It’s doubtless the hardest climb in the Tour of Flanders. Above all, because it arrives after two other really hard climbs, the Oude Kwaremont and the Paterberg. The three climbs in rapid succession makes it really hard.”

Quinziato has had a fair bit of experience with the Koppenberg, and though he has never suffered the ignominious fate of clip clopping up it on foot, he lets on that it is always a worry. After all, isn’t it one of the biggest fears in a bike race next to injury, crashing, or suffering a mechanical?

“The Koppenberg is an impressive wall. You have to look at it with respect, because if it’s even a little bit wet, you can’t be sure you’ll get to the top without walking.”

Tire Pressure: A Big Deal I’ve had the pleasure of riding the Koppenberg a few times, in every type of weather. From bright and sunny with temperatures in the 70’s, to driving rain with temperatures in the 40’s, to the worst of all – a recent rain on previously dry stones. I’ve had to walk once, but it was the manner in which I was forced to walk, which was unnerving: my tires had no traction on the stones. It was like I was riding up a 22% wall of bumpy, frozen river. I got off my bike, scratched my head, and wondered – how is it possible to get up this thing when it’s wet?

I got my answer a little while later in the form of former racer, director, and general cycling genius, Scott Sunderland. Sunderland encountered the Koppenberg as a racer on more than a few occasions and then dealt with it again as a director. I asked Scott the day after my curious experience – how do they get up it in the wet? He smiled a knowing smile and said, “We’ve ridden pressures as low as 3-3.5 bar on bad days there.” Quinziato agrees on the lower pressure, but does not concede as much: “6 bars (87psi) on the front and 6.5 (94psi) on the back. Any more than that in wet conditions, and you’ll have no grip.”

But What Is It Like? With tire pressure adjusted to the conditions that await you, let’s take an imaginary trip up the legendary wall. The first time you turn the corner to see the climb in front of you is one a cycling fan will never forget. It’s beautiful. It’s everything you imagine when you see it on tv, but bigger, narrower, perfect. Some places don’t live up to expectations when you see them in person, but the Koppenberg does, and it does emphatically.

The cobbles are objectively some of the worst on the route of the Ronde van Vlaanderen, and they start early, as you bounce through the tiny town of Melden. The grade starts out moderately enough, but something like climbing out a bowl, it just gets steeper and steeper. As you push forward and upward, and as the grade steepens, you head into the trench – the climb is cut into the hillside. It lies deep below green fields and underneath two parallel rows of regal trees that stand as permanent spectators for the masses, both great heroes and weekend warriors alike, that ply the rough pathway.

The climb hits its peak at about the 22% mark, and soon after, you emerge out of the dark, dank trench and the climb’s most difficult middle section. Gradually, the Koppenberg regains some semblance of a reasonable grade, the sky becomes visible again, and the wet stones that wreaked havoc just meters before are now dryer, more reasonable.

Don’t think it’s done yet though – the climb pitches again ruthlessly toward the top, and from there, you still have a few more meters of continually uphill cobbles, before you finally reach smooth pavement again. From there, it’s a quick, wind blasted section across the top of the climb, before you head down a screaming descent and the knowledge that you’re still getting started in the Tour of Flanders’s hellingen sweepstakes.

A Brief History Of The Koppenberg The climb we see today is, believe it or not, a tamer, more civilized version of the monster that ruled over the Tour of Flanders in the 70’s and 80’s with a battle hardened fist. The Koppenberg was first introduced to the Ronde van Vlaanderen in 1975. The next thirteen years were a heyday for the climb. It enjoyed a spot of infamy not known to any other climbs the year over. It was a crap shoot whether even the winner would be riding up the Koppenberg. The road, almost a path, was disturbingly narrow, far narrower than it is today (and it’s very narrow even now), and the road surface was laughably atrocious. The road was almost constantly wet, muddy, and subsequently slick, and combined with the narrow road and drunken cobblestones – it was a show stopper.

In 1987, the Koppenberg very nearly stopped the show. In its 13th year on the Ronde route, the simmering pot of ridiculous reached a boil. Jesper Skibby would be the victim of the final straw. Skibby broke away early in the 1987 edition of Vlaanderens Mooiste. He had a two minute cushion when he hit the road that rises straight out of the tiny village of Melden. The gap was falling quickly, and Skibby would be falling momentarily as well.

At the steepest, nastiest section, Skibby teetered over. Normally, this wouldn’t be a huge problem, except the race commissaire’s car was hot on his heels and had nowhere else to go with the field just moments behind. Luckily for Skibby, he fell into the grass embankment that makes a war-like trench of the Koppenberg. It was lucky because the commissaire’s car was not stopping – it just kept right on going. Skibby’s bike did not survive the altercation, but at least I’m not reporting on a dead bike racer mowed down by an official vehicle worried about disrupting a bike race.

The harrowing debacle assured an extended vacation for the Koppenberg. The Koppenberg went into a dormant state for the next 15 years. It did not return to professional bike racing again until the 2002 edition of the Tour of Flanders, but not before significant renovations, which included widening and repaving the vile stretch.

The Koppenberg was welcomed with open arms, as the race picked up a decisive climb that had the ability not to decide the winner, but to jettison any also-rans, to severely cripple any riders not going well, and to give an early launching pad for the riders looking to win in Ninove.

The Front: The Only Place To Be The reintroduction of the Koppenberg in 2002, and its use every year in general, underlines, highlights, shouts, screams, texts, moans – communicates very effectively – one of the mantras of bike racing: get to the front. Anyone that has ever raced a bike has heard those painful words: you gotta get to the front.

Countless eyes have rolled in response to the most basic of directives, but never is it more important than on a climb like the Koppenberg. Positioning is crucial on a climb where you’re not guaranteed the ability to ride up the climb if you’re outside of the top 20. Indeed, most years, only the top 30 manage to make it through unscathed. The poor, suffering masses at the rear are left hobbling up the cruel berg as the leaders howl down the descent en route to the Mariaborrestraat and the Steenbeekdries at speeds close to 60 mph.

The importance of being to the fore on the Koppenberg is unquestioned, but Manuel Quinziato points out that the battle for position on the Koppenberg is actually solidified two climbs before – on the winding, narrow run-in to the Oude Kwaremont: “What really matters is the position you have on the Oude Kwaremont…If you are in the first part there, you’ll be in the first part also on the Paterberg and Koppenberg.”

Garmin-Cervelo’s Andreas Klier laughs off that idea though: “A good position on the Oude Kwaremont is important, but you have to continue to fight and continue to ride well to keep at the front. You can lose every bit of work with one slip up.”

One of the underlying themes of the Tour of Flanders is one of the domino effect – once one things goes wrong, it’s highly likely that more bad things will occur, leading, eventually, to a rider’s demise on the day. A poor position on the Koppenberg could lead to walking, and after that, the slings and arrows continue – there’s a feed zone before heading into the next stretch of cobbles. There’s maybe a 3 minute section of solace on the main road. If a rider is frantically chasing, the feed zone suddenly becomes slightly less important, with regaining the field much higher on the to do list. Missing a feed at 200 km though? Disaster. Not getting that crucial food down? Disaster. Never seeing the front end of the race again? Disaster. And so on, and so forth. So many things can go wrong, and for most of the field, they often do.

How Important Can It Be At Only 200k In? The years from 2002 to 2006 were a welcome return to the meanest climb in the Vlaamse Ardennen, but 2006 saw yet another nasty situation, and the organizers were left with their hands in their pockets looking with interest at the floor, singing an embarrassed tune as most everyone in the race was forced to walk – only a small, very elite group led by the violent pedal strokes of Tom Boonen made it to the top in their saddle. Many of the walkers returned to the fold, but a huge box of matches was lit to return to the head of the race.

The following year, 2007, was to be another vacation year for the Koppenberg. The deteriorating road surface was cited as the reason, and once again, the road was reworked over the year before making yet another triumphant return in 2008.

The racers once again found themselves luckless. 2008 offered up some of the worst weather seen at the Tour of Flanders in quite a long while. Riders saw everything from rain to sleet to snow to hail to bright sunshine. Of course, the Koppenberg was a mess, and everyone save for the top 30 enjoyed a stroll up the hill. Some of those walkers managed to reintegrate into the race, but at what cost?

2009 wasn’t a major walking year, but the Koppenberg still managed to leave its mark on the race – both in the high speeds at the front and the distinctly slow speed of one rider in particular. At the front, Tom Boonen and Filippo Pozzato showed that they were in a class unto themselves. The two rivals set a ridiculous pace up the 600 meters of cobbles and left the rest of the field trailing in their wake. Neither Boonen or Pozzato continued the effort over the top, but their statement had been made. They were the two strongest in the race. Pozzato and Boonen’s dominance, which ensured that all eyes were transfixed on their every move, along with Pozzato’s unwillingness to work with Boonen, essentially took the two out of the race. This set the stage for the enigmatic Stijn Devolder to take his second straight Ronde van Vlaanderen victory.

Behind the impressive display of force at the front of the race, one rider waded up the climb on foot, took a moment to throw his bike at the trench wall, walked some more, then stopped to show to the world what had derailed him. Fabian Cancellara fell victim to a broken chain on the steepest section of the climb. Cancellara had already had a rough spring beset by illness, but still harbored hopes of a big ride in a race that he confessed openly as one of his big dreams.

Cancellara would have his revenge in 2010. He summited the climb unscathed, safely in the midst of the favorites, while, once again, Tom Boonen was showing his power at the front. Cancellara quietly bided his time before unleashing first on the 10th climb of the day, the Molenberg, and then again on the Muur. The rest is etched in our minds…

And now, after his display of utter dominance on Saturday at the E3 Prijs Vlaanderen, one has to wonder just what Cancellara has in store for the hallowed hellingen of Flanders and his assembled rivals.

'A nightmare' – Koppenberg brings havoc to Tour of Flanders

E ven the longest races can be distilled to the shortest stretch of road. The Tour of Flanders of 2024 was defined by the wicked slopes of the Koppenberg. Already notorious in the lore of this event, the sharp wall of cobbles outside Oudenaarde added another line to its lengthy rap sheet in Sunday’s rain-soaked edition.

For most, the Koppenberg is a climb to be endured rather than attacked. Here, it was the launchpad for Mathieu van der Poel’s race-winning acceleration with 44km to go as well as the moment most of his rivals’ challenges ground literally to a halt.

There were already murmurs from various pre-race reconnaissance rides that the Koppenberg was liberally bathed in mud this Spring, and the situation wasn’t helped by the deluge that poured over Flanders for much of the afternoon. And besides, even at the best of times, the 20% gradients have been known to compel hardened professionals to dismount and walk.

The tone was set here by Ivan Garcia Cortina (Movistar), who led the race onto the 600m climb after slipping clear of the front group a few kilometres earlier. The Spaniard took on the lower slopes with gusto, only to come to a stop when his tyres lost traction on the steepest section. On dismounting, he tried to release some pressure from his tyres, fearful that the issue would repeat itself later in the race.

“I had no grip, nothing at all. I tried to lower my pressure a bit, but there was nothing I could do. It was impossible,” Garcia Cortina explained with a rueful shake of his head when he arrived in the mixed zone. “I said if I didn’t do that in the Koppenberg, I would probably have that same problem later in the Paterberg.”

As Garcia Cortina grappled with his tyre pressure in the gutter, Van der Poel was settling into the seated acceleration that would carry him to victory. The Koppenberg hasn’t always been to the world champion’s liking during his cyclocross career, but he made relative light of its vicious slopes here, maintaining as brisk a rhythm as the circumstances allowed.

The chasing Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease A Bike) also managed to ride all the way to the top as he battled gamely to limit his losses to Van der Poel, a feat also achieved by Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) despite his exertions off the front earlier in the race.

Behind them, however, came a litany of riders unclipping and walking their bikes up the hill in a desperate attempt to stay in the hunt for a podium spot. They must already have guessed, of course, that Van der Poel’s rainbow jersey would not be seen again before the finish in Oudenaarde.

Indeed, the vast majority of those hunting Van der Poel didn’t even catch sight of him on the climb itself. The Tour of Flanders tends to have that effect, and this was a particularly extreme edition, bedevilled by miserable conditions and constant attacking. By the last 100km here, most riders were wearily chasing the race rather than actively participating in it.

Matteo Trentin (Tudor), 19th, counted himself among their number when he reached the finish of what he cheerfully described as “a bit of a shit day.” Despite his chattering teeth, the Italian paused briefly in the mixed zone to talk reporters through the Koppenberg, though he was unaware at that point that anyone had managed to ride up it.

“With the rain and the mud, you can’t get up. There’s not much you could do,” Trentin said. “I don’t know if anybody managed to get up on their bike. With the mud there was nothing to do, and we were all exhausted by then too. I think everybody was. With the mud, there was nothing you could do. And to be honest, with a race as fast as this, the legs are what they are. Everything was slipping – even the shoes.”

The steepest pitches of the Koppenberg proved too much, too, for the tyres of Magnus Sheffield (Ineos), but the American reorganised himself well over the other side, picking his way through the carnage over the remainder of the race. He eventually battled his way up to the group chasing Van der Poel, helping himself to sixth in Oudenaarde.

Like everybody else who trudged muddied and dazed through the mixed zone afterwards, Sheffield recognised that the Koppenberg had been the turning point of the entire day. A Monument briefly became a footrace, and it was every man for himself.

“There’s the Koppenberg cyclocross race, I think that’s the best way you can describe it,” Sheffield smiled. “Honestly, with road shoes, they’re not meant to run up cobbles, and we were trying to get up as quickly as possible. As soon as I saw guys remount, I tried to do the same. I think at that point Mathieu had already attacked, and from there, we were just trying to chase as best as possible.”

Van der Poel

The Koppenberg didn’t wreak quite as much havoc in the women’s race, won by Elisa Longo Borghini , as it did last year when only two riders rode all the way up. This time, the first ten or so riders managed to grind their way to the top aboard their bikes, though a crash involving Chloé Dygert forced most of the rest of the field out of the saddle and onto their feet, including world champion Lotte Kopecky .

“Koppenberg, we knew we going to be a nightmare,” said Pfeiffer Georgi. “Unfortunately, my running isn’t as good as I’d like. This is only the second year we’ve had it in our race. It's not nice, like when, like last year, only two people didn’t walk up it. It’s obviously an iconic climb, but it’s not the nicest for us when we have to run.”

 The Koppenberg was first introduced in the men’s race in 1976, though it was removed from the route again after the 1987 edition when Jesper Skibby fell on the climb and suffered the indignity of having a race commissaire’s car run over his rear wheel. That incident saw the Koppenberg banished from the Ronde for the next fifteen years, returning only after it had been widened and repaved.

It spent another year on the sidelines in 2007, but it has enjoyed an unbroken run in the Ronde ever since. It remains to be seen if Sunday’s scenes will prompt Flanders Classics to rethink its inclusion in the years ahead, given that the race organiser had already seen fit to remove the Kanariebeg and Kortekeer from the 2024 edition due to safety concerns.

Garcia Cortina, the first man to put his foot down, shook his head when the idea was to put to him in the mixed zone. “No, it’s just like this, it’s the same for everyone,” he said. “I think it’s part of the history of the sport.”

Hardly surprisingly, the thought was echoed by Van der Poel when he sat down with reporters after landing his record-equalling third Ronde victory. He has had a sometimes-vexed rapport with the Koppenberg throughout his cyclocross career, but he was in a race of his own once the gradient bit here.

 “It was super slippery on the Koppenberg, I also had difficulty to get the power down,” Van der Poel said, before dismissing the idea that its place in the Ronde should be scrutinised.

 “I don’t think so. I mean, after a while you can get rid of everything. The road to the new climb, the Kappelleberg, was maybe more dangerous that the roads we did last year. The problem is the riders, not the roads, in my opinion.”

Lotte Kopecky's hat-trick hunt at the Tour of Flanders was snuffed out as SD Worx had a rare off day on the Flemish cobbles. The Belgian was the clear favourite after winning the last two editions but was off the pace as Lidl-Trek duo Elisa Longo Borghini and Shirin van Anrooij got away with Kasia Niewiadoma. Longo Borghini claimed the win, her second at the race, after a thrilling finale.

Amstel Gold Race 2024 preview, schedule, how to watch live: Mathieu van der Poel goes for third win in three weeks

Mathieu van der Poel will look for a remarkable road cycling treble this weekend as he aims to regain the Amstel Gold Race crown he last won in 2019.

The Dutchman has won the Tour of Flanders and Paris–Roubaix Monument classics back-to-back, and has the chance to make it three wins in as many weeks in the first of the Ardennes classics on Sunday (14 April).

This race was one of the 29-year-old's first major breakthrough wins back in 2019, and it's no surprise he is one of the favourites.

But how can you watch the races? What is the route? What time does it begin? Find out below.

With many other big names missing through injury , and defending champion Tadej Pogacar focusing on the Giro d'Italia, perhaps Van der Poel's biggest challenges will come from INEOS Grenadiers' Tom Pidcock – incidentally also a rival of his in mountain bike and cyclo-cross – and France's Benoît Cosnefroy .

Belgium's Jasper Philipsen , who was second to Van der Poel last week in Roubaix and won Milano–Sanremo earlier this season, is also a perennial threat in the one-day races.

American Matteo Jorgenson of Team Visma - Lease A Bike has also shown he can be someone to watch, having won the semi-classic Dwars door Vlaanderen at the end of March.

On the women's side, Demi Vollering of SD Worx is the defending champion; her teammate Lotte Kopecky – Van der Poel's road race world champion counterpart – enters as the winner from last weekend's Paris–Roubaix Femmes.

Another SD Worx rider, Vollering's fellow Dutchwoman Lorena Wiebes , has five wins to her name this season and is also in good form.

Other challengers include the veteran Marianne Vos , Tour of Flanders winner Elisa Longo Borghini , and Katarzyna Niewiadoma – who was runner-up behind Longo Borghini in Flanders.

Amstel Gold Race 2024: Race routes

Both the men's and women's races begin in Maastricht and end in Berg en Terblijt. However, the women's race goes around a circuit following the first passage of the famed Cauberg climb – which is summitted four times in a 157.6km (97.9mi) race. There will be a total of 1812m (5945ft) of climbing.

Meanwhile, the men's route heads further south, reaching the German border at Aachen before doubling back north. The Cauberg is only climbed twice in the race, but there is far more ascending across the many punchy hills – the peloton will gain 3290m (10,794ft) of elevation across 253.6km (157.6mi) of racing.

Amstel Gold Race 2024: Women's and men's race schedules

The women's 2024 Amstel Gold Race begins at 10:00 local time (08:00 UTC). The first ascent of the daunting Cauberg is estimated at 12:12 local time (assuming an average speed of 37 km/h), with the final climb at 14:10 and the finish at 14:15.

Meanwhile, the men's peloton sets off at 10:45 local time (08:45). The first climb of the Cauberg comes 171.8km into the race, estimated at 14:50 local time (at an average speed of 42 km/h); it is only climbed one more time at 16:20 with 18.6km to go. The expected finish time is at 16:47.

The men's and women's Amstel Gold Races will be broadcast live around the world, including on Eurosport and Discovery+ in Europe and the United Kingdom.

HARELBEKE, Belgium (VN) — The Koppenberg climb at the Tour of Flanders will be a “big casino” according to Ellen van Dijk.

The brutal 600-meter cobbled berg has been included in the women’s race for the first time this year with many riders tackling it for the first time this week in their pre-Flanders recons.

Peaking at a leg-sapping 22 percent, the narrow climb will likely have a major impact on the race. However, van Dijk is not yet sure just how much of an impact it will have on the final result, but the jostling for position will make for a very chaotic moment some 44 kilometers from the finish.

“The Koppenberg is definitely a new thing in the course and it’s going to be very challenging. It will definitely break up the race, I’m sure of it,” van Dijk said in a team press conference Friday. “It’s quite early in the final. It’s hard to expect if it’s really going to make the race already, but for sure. Something will happen there. And positioning will be key, and everybody knows that, and everybody wants to be in the front. So, it’s kind of a big casino, I think.”

Teammate Elisa Longo Borghini agrees about van Dijk’s assessment of the climb. Positioning will be very important because riders can lose a lot of time on their rivals if they get caught too far back.

She’s happy, though, that the fans will get to watch the women racing it for the first time.

“In the end, it just makes the race harder, and positioning will be the key. I think also it’s going to be nice for the spectators to see us on the Koppenberg,” Longo Borghini said. “It’s a key point in the race and you need to be upfront and you just have to be in a good position. If you’re out of position and you’ll lose time and it’s going be really hard to chase back and be back at the front of the peloton.”

Trek-Segafredo has options

Trek-Segafredo has been one of the dominant teams so far this month, thanks in part to the finishing speeds of world champion Elisa Balsamo. The Italian has embraced her move to the WorldTour and has not looked burdened by her rainbow jersey.

Her recent wins at the Trofeo Alfredo Binda and Gent-Wevelgem in particular have catapulted her towards favorite status for Sunday. The Tour of Flanders is a much harder challenge than what she’s had so far this year, but she’s ready to take it on.

“It’s a hard race and I think it’s also going to be very colder and maybe wet and so it is going to be harder,” Balsamo said. “I also think that a lot of teams really want to make the race full gas because they don’t want a sprint. I’m going to fight and try to survive on the last hills, and we will also have different riders that can make the race and so I don’t feel a lot of pressure about that. I only try to do my best.”

Balsamo will have the support of two former De Ronde winners in van Dijk and Longo Borghini this weekend. Longo Borghini has pulled herself out of the potential contenders’ list as she continues to recover from sinusitis, but van Dijk is a very strong “Plan A.2” for Trek.

Van Dijk has been a key part of Trek-Segafredo’s victories over the last month and she is in strong enough shape to go for glory herself. With plenty of teams hoping to form a break, van Dijk knows she and others in the team have to be ready to take their own initiative.

“Flanders is not a race where you can just wait all day long,” she said. “But we have a different team this year with Elisa Balsamo as an option. So for sure, it’s not like it’s never like we cannot do anything in a race besides bringing a Balsamo to the finish. For sure with this option you know that’s the best card to play in a sprint. But as we know Flanders doesn’t always end up in a sprint. So yeah, we will see what the race will bring us.

“But we know lots of teams want to get rid of Balsamo, but I know how strong she is so I say good luck with that.”

          I had always been curious about a boating excursion and yearned to have one. The opportune time came last Sunday when early in the morning, my friend, Satish, came to me with a proposal. I at once accepted the proposal and thus grabbed the opportunity.

          Satish, an extrovert as he is had roped in two more of our common friends, Dinesh and Naresh. We all four moved towards the river Yamuna. To my surprise and delight, Satish had already settled the terms with a boatman and he was there on the bank of the river waiting for us.

          It was late in the afternoon. We embarked the boat most jovially and inquisitively. Satish took out his flute and started playing it as the boat moved. Then ripples in the water were a wonderful sight as I discovered and particularly so, as the moon soon appeared in the sky and spread its silvery beams on water. The waves and ripples in the river seemed to be playing with the beams of the sun.

          As if in a sudden fit of frenzy, Dinesh got up and started dancing. Perhaps subconsciously not desiring to be left behind, we all joined him in his frenzied movements arising out of sheer joy and freedom from anxiety and worldly concern that the moments offered us.

          Having enjoyed ourselves and after finishing all the fruits, chocolates, and other stables that we had brought with us, we asked the boatman to start the journey backward. I can never forget this happy journey in the company of my best friends in life.

A Journey By Boat

A journey by boat is not a common thing for me. I have sat on a boat once in my life. so it was full of interest for me.

Once I had to go to Allahabad to join a ceremony. Many other relatives had come. It was bathing day. So we decided to go for a bath in the Ganga. We deiced to go on a boat from Baluaghat to Sangam. The idea was liked by all. So we started on foot on Baluaghat. We were 16 in number. Many boatmen requested us to sit in their boats. We chose a small boat painted in blue. The wages were settled and we sat in the boat. There were two boatmen. They asked us to sit properly on both the sides of the boat.

The boat sailed. It moved gently. We saw the building on the banks. It was a pleasant sight. We were going down the current. So the boatmen had not to work hard. We passed by the side of the famous fort of Allahabad. It was built by Akbar. In about an hour we reached the Sangam.

We took off our clothes. Then we took bath in the water. The water was not very deep. There was a large number of tortoises. Children feared them. As soon as we had taken our bath, we got into the boat again. The evening was drawing near. We wanted to return home quickly.

The return journey was difficult. The boat was going against the current. The boatmen had to work hard at the oars. We saw the glorious sunset. It was a beautiful sight. The sun’s rays made everything red. The weather was clear when we started. Boats of different shapes and sizes passed up and down the river. Men, women, and children were taking bath on ghats. The breeze was blowing. Some boats with worshipping materials were also there so that one can worship Ganga Mata. The sun was going to set. It was a lovely scene.

Now suddenly, the sky in the west became dim. The boatmen cried ‘ A storm’. They seemed to be frightened. So we became more frightened. The storm was growing furious. We were in the middle of the river. The water rose high. It dashed against the boat. The boat shook from side to side. Some of us moved from their places. The balance was disturbed. The boatmen stopped us. They asked us to sit still and repeat ‘Ram, Ram’. The boatmen worked harder and harder. But it was now quite dark. We lost the home of life.

Suddenly the boatmen cried ‘ the bank, the bank’. We had reached the bank. We thanked Goel for saving us. We got down quickly and put our feet on the ground. We paid fifty rupees to the boatman. My wife also gave him twenty rupees. It was a singular experience. It was an adventurous and charming journey. I still remember the scenes of this journey. They were so beautiful,    they recollect in my mind again and again. I have never seen such scenes again. It became a memory journey.

A Boating Excursion

Picnics and boating often go hand in hand. People usually select places for recreation near rivers, lakes, or dams. Boating makes a person feel relaxed. The sight of large watery areas soothes the frayed nerves.

The boat for city dwellers is associated with a sense of freedom. When they sit in a boat the cool winds and the peaceful expanse of water make them forget the daily routine. They feel at peace with themselves.

As the boat moves forward, people often ask the boat mar to sing a song. The old boatmen usually sing old folk songs. These songs take a person away to the forgotten lands, where there were happiness and prosperity and no worries. These songs remind us of full rivers and lush fields. They bring to mind, happy people.

The boat ride on a full moon night transports a person into a fairyland. The waters of the lake or a river swell gently due to the attraction from the moon. The rays of the moon dance merrily on the water. The ripples produce by the boat and the waves lapping against the hull of the boat produce a soothing effect. The silvery water mirrors the trees and the monuments surrounding the lake or the river. They give an impression of a nether world, waiting to be discovered.

Such boat rides are also good for health. They increase the digestive capacity of the body and make one feel hungry. They also calm the mind and relax the tense muscles. This helps a body to rejuvenate itself. Frequent boat rides are also a good exercise, for the person who is rowing them.

Boating is also a good hobby, which can later be taken up as a sport. It increases a person’s awareness of the natural elements and sharpens his skill of survival in the alien environment. It also gives a person an opportunity to contemplate.

In all boating as a hobby or as a sport is good for the health and peace of a person
