To create an impact, PowerPoint presentations need the right kind of media. Here are 30 sites and resources where you can find free sound effects, videos, animations, clipart, and funny cartoons for all your presentation needs.

It already has the ability to suggest design ideas through Designer and draw up an outline for your content with QuickStarter . What else do you need?

Well, you still need to create a memorable presentation . And that still takes some doing.

Communication expert Garr Reynolds who is also the author of the best seller Presentation Zen has a three-step advice. Prepare, Design, and Deliver . In the design phase, he nudges presenters to use video and audio when appropriate.

Using video clips to show concrete examples promotes active cognitive processing, which is the natural way people learn.

The idea is to sidestep the corny and use the right kind of media to create a visual story. A good multimedia asset changes the pace of your presentation and can immerse the audience in your storytelling. Of course, keep it short and sharp around your main theme.

I wanted to end one of my presentations with a "Beam me Up, Scotty" sound clip from Star Trek. I got the 11 KB file from here. The site still has that classic old look, but it is a rich dump of sound clips from movies, TV, commercials and some special effects types too.

The site has a search page, so it is easy to get to your sound clip if you know exactly what you are searching for. The separate tabs for sound clips from movies, TV, commercials, and FX should make your job easier.

This is a crowdsourced music site featuring remixes and samples licensed under Creative Commons licenses . It includes many tracks with non-commercial sharing licenses and some under sampling licenses. Dig into the experimental genres for themes and looping backgrounds.

The site features excellent organization with a bunch of categories and filters. Just be sure to credit the musician with the correct Creative Commons attribution . It's not for the run-of-the-mill presenter but more for the guy who knows what he is doing with his music.

The site hasn't changed its look. But behind the old façade, it has kept on updating its collection of effects. From prankish sounds (give the farts a miss in your PPTs) to cool sound effects, this site has a good collection. With the tiny sound clips you can add sound effects to your buttons or transitions. Sound clips fall under royalty-free and free sounds.

There's plenty to choose from the world's largest reservoir of free videos. It is so big that other videos websites often host their collections on YouTube itself. You just have to do three things – think about the right kind of video to showcase on a slide. Then, search YouTube to find the aptest video. Finally, download the YouTube video and embed it in your presentation.

Remember, Microsoft PowerPoint 2016 makes it easy to insert a YouTube video. If you didn't know it yet, you can also use the Insert Video field to search for a video from within the PowerPoint itself.

  Internet Archive

If you are thinking of an educational PowerPoint slide, then try the Internet Archive . Okay, try it for everything else too because it holds classic full-length films, alternative news broadcasts, cartoons, concerts, and many other archival materials behind its vault doors.

The 1654 videos pale in comparison to YouTube but do check it out if you are lookingfor historic videos under a Creative Commons license.

Try the Pixabay search engine for free public domain resources of all kinds. No attribution is required. The collection is small, but the videos relate to specific stock footage categories. Scroll down to the foot of the page to filter by category. They include everything from Animals to Vacation.

You will find that most of the assets are hosted on Vimeo and therefore are high resolution.

Pexels has borrowed a leaf from the Pixabay playbook. They have a growing database of full-HD or at least HD quality that you can edit or change for personal and even for commercial projects.

Again, no attribution is required. Pexels has a good site search followed by neat tagging which makes it easy to find the right video.

A community of videographers upload their work and you can grab them for free. Videezy is a site for free HD stock videos and other kinds of footage. Do check the license under each video before you use it in your presentation. Enter keywords or browse by category to find the clip.

Add Comic Strips for Humor

I would pick cartoons from Dilbert to add a bit of fun to my somber business slides. But Scott Adams would drag me to court for using cartoons without his permission. The burden to add that spice of humor at exactly the right place in your slides falls on these free comic strip sites which all use Creative Commons licenses.

Randall Munroe is the first name that pops up when we think of free webcomics and cartoons. His work is licensed under a "use it but don't sell it" Creative Commons license. The comics are a sarcastic take on the world with some geekdom thrown in.

Now, if you are wondering what the title of the website means – don't. According to Randall, it is just a word with no phonetic pronunciation.

Crimes Against Hugh's Manatees

This weekly comic strip needs an acronym. But then, you wouldn't bother enough to find out what a manatee is. I have always found a Tumblr blog difficult to search, so I follow the tags instead.

The webcomic has been created by Hugh D. Crawford and his yen for dark humor. All his work is under a Creative Commons License and needs appropriate credit.

Mooselake Cartoons

Cartoons about anything and everything. The important distinction is that they are separated into neat categories like Art & Culture, Business, Education etc. Total them all up and you have 980 ways to draw a chuckle from your audience. Feel free to use them with a Creative Commons license.

Animation and ClipArt for PowerPoint

I wouldn't use animations in professional PowerPoint slides too much. But animations can do their duty in educational slides inside the classroom. Animations and GIFs are not for memes alone . They can be instructional if used with the right context. Look at the idea of software instructions with explainer GIFs.

If YouTube has a lifetime of videos, then GIPHY has the market for animated GIFs. Look past the funny GIFs you send with WhatsApp at the thousands of instructional animations on the site. Or just try the useful search engine on the site. I just searched for "internal combustion engine" and guess what – I got nearly 7000 hits!

You can't stop Reddit when it is on a roll. Searching for just the right GIF can be a chore, but at least try it once on this sub-Reddit which houses educational GIFs of all kinds. Take a glance to the right and there are two sub-Reddits called gifrequests and makemeagi f you can tap for some friendly assistance.

Surprised? Wikipedia is a rabbit hole for information and nearly 40 million freely usable media files hosted on Wikimedia. Supporting many of their pages are explainer GIFs under a Creative Commons license. For instance, try this comet impact GIF next time with a space topic.

The 10 Best Movies and TV Shows to Watch This Weekend

I f my Twitter feed is any indication of the world at large, the whole planet is chomping at the bit to see Luca Guadagnino’s Zendaya-starring sexy tennis movie. That’s probably not the case, but Challengers has been getting great buzz anyway. Why wouldn’t it? Most mainstream movies lately have felt so much more sterile than hot — pretty people passionately making out is exactly what we need this season! Speaking of which: There’s also that Sydney Sweeney–Glen Powell rom-com hitting Netflix this weekend, if you need double the oomph. But what if you, for some weird reason, want to watch something that doesn’t have young people kissing on the lips? Well then, here’s a handful of other offerings (some of which are even PG) that’s streaming this weekend.

Springtime is for Zendaya. Hot off of Dune: Part Two , she’s leading director Luca Guadagnino and writer Justin Kuritzkes ’s sexy tennis drama as Tashi Donaldson, a rising star who burns out after sustaining a career-ending injury. Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor join her to create the film’s unofficial throuple (Faist plays her husband-pupil and O’Connor is her rugged ex-boyfriend). It’s fun, it’s sweaty, it’s sexy — and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s score just slays. It’s an awesome time at the movies.

We’re Here season 4

A reality show with a bit of Queer Eye ’s sensibilities, We’re Here brings RuPaul’s Drag Race drag queens to mostly rural and more conservative cities across America to uplift their queer communities. After three seasons with Bob the Drag Queen, Shangela, and Eureka, the new season of We’re Here is adding new hosts Sasha Velour, Jaida Essence Hall, Priyanka, and Latrice Royale as they visit Tennessee and Oklahoma.

Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story

Split into four episodes, The Bon Jovi Story is exactly that: a Bon Jovi documentary. All the band members, past and present, including front man Jon Bon Jovi, come together to discuss their journey. It seems like typical nostalgia fodder with a few extra treats for fans from unreleased demos and personal footage.

Dead Boy Detectives

Dead Boy Detectives has that unmistakable Netflix sheen that lets it perfectly sit next to shows like The Umbrella Academy and The Sandman . (As it happens, this new series is adapted from a Neil Gaiman comic and set in The Sandman universe, so that also helps explain it.) Our titular detectives are a pair of ghosts (George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri) who, instead of going to the afterlife, stay behind on earth and solve paranormal mysteries with the help of a living medium (Kassius Nelson).

With the Sonic films doing pretty well, Paramount is naturally expanding the Sonic cinematic universe. Next on the docket is Knuckles (Idris Elba), the tough-as-nails echidna who we last met in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 . Now he’s getting his own television show as he teams up with Adam Pally’s sheriff, Wade Whipple.

Lights, Camera

Back in Theaters

That’s right, we can see Sigourney Weaver kick alien ass on the big screen again! Ridley Scott’s influential sci-fi flick is celebrating its 45th anniversary in theaters this weekend. Now if only we can get Weaver’s Ripley and Alien back at Disney World …

Finally Streaming

From director Lila Avilés comes a lovely and bittersweet story of a young girl as she and her family celebrate her ill father’s last birthday. After a brief run in theaters, Tótem will exclusively be on the Criterion Channel, so you can dive into Avilés’s beautiful little drama at home.

Double Feature

7 days in hell.

If you’re looking for another tennis movie with two hot guys fighting it out on the court this weekend, then look no further. In the mockumentary 7 Days in Hell , Andy Samberg and Kit Harington (in probably his best role ever) hilariously duke it out during the longest tennis match in history. Samberg plays the golden-haired bad boy (and adopted son of the Williams family), and Harington becomes his foil, an uptight and stressed-out British boy. Look out for talking-head cameos from Serena Williams, Fred Armisen, Lena Dunham, Jon Hamm, David Copperfield, and more.

WATCH: Biden attends 2024 White House Correspondents’ Dinner hosted by Colin Jost

WASHINGTON (AP) — An election-year roast of President Joe Biden before journalists, celebrities and politicians at the annual White House correspondents’ dinner Saturday butted up against growing public discord over the Israel-Hamas war, with protests outside the event condemning both Biden’s handling of the conflict and the Western news’ media coverage of it.

Biden, like most of his predecessors, used the glitzy annual White House Correspondents’ Association banquet to jab at his rival, Donald Trump. He followed the jokes with solemn warnings about what he said would happen if Trump won the presidency again.

With hundreds of protesters rallying against the war in Gaza outside the event and concerns over the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the perils for journalists covering the conflict, the war hung over this year’s event. But speakers inside made only passing mention of the conflict despite some having to run a gauntlet of demonstrators. Biden’s speech, which lasted around 10 minutes, made no mention of the ongoing war or the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

“Shame on you!” protesters draped in the traditional Palestinian keffiyeh cloth shouted, running after men in tuxedos and suits and women in long dresses who were holding clutch purses as guests hurried inside for the dinner.

Chants accused U.S. journalists of undercovering the war and misrepresenting it. “Western media we see you, and all the horrors that you hide,” crowds chanted at one point.

Other protesters lay sprawled motionless on the pavement, next to mock-ups of flak vests with “press” insignia .

Ralliers cried “Free, free Palestine.” They cheered when at one point someone inside the Washington Hilton — where the dinner has been held for decades — unfurled a Palestinian flag from a top-floor hotel window.

Criticism of the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s six-month-old military offensive in Gaza has spread through American college campuses, with students pitching encampments in an effort to force their universities to divest from Israel. Counterprotests back Israel’s offensive and complain of antisemitism.

Biden’s motorcade Saturday took an alternate route from the White House to the Washington Hilton than in previous years, largely avoiding the crowds of demonstrators.

Biden’s speech before nearly 3,000 people was being followed by entertainer Colin Jost from “Saturday Night Live.” Academy Award winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm and Chris Pines were among other stars.

Kelly O’Donnell, president of the correspondents’ association, opened the event by reminding the audience of the important work that journalists do but noting that the dinner is happening at “a complex moment for our nation,” and in a decisive election year.

O’Donnell went on to list the scores of journalists who have been imprisoned across the world, including Americans Evan Gershkovich and Austin Tice. The families of those journalists were in attendance as they have been at previous dinners. She briefly mentioned journalists killed in the war between Israel and Hamas.

Biden began his roast with a direct focus on Trump, calling him “sleepy Don,” in reference to a nickname Trump had given the president previously. He went on to note that despite being similar in age, the two presidential hopefuls have little else in common.

“My vice president actually endorses me,” Biden said. Former Vice President Mike Pence has refused to endorse Trump’s reelection bid.

The president made a grim speech about what he believes is at stake this election, saying that another Trump administration would be even more harmful to America than his first term. “We have to take this serious — eight years ago we could have written it off as ‘Trump talk’ but not after January 6,” Biden told the audience, referring to the supporters of Trump who stormed the Capitol after Biden defeated Trump in the 2020 election.

Law enforcement, including the Secret Service, have instituted extra street closures and other measures to ensure what Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said would be the “highest levels of safety and security for attendees.”

The agency was working with Washington police to protect demonstrators’ right to assemble, Guglielmi said. However, “we will remain intolerant to any violent or destructive behavior.”

Protest organizers said they wanted to bring attention to the high numbers of Palestinian and other Arab journalists killed by Israel’s military since the war began in October.

More than two dozen  journalists in Gaza wrote a letter  last week calling on their colleagues in Washington to boycott the dinner altogether.

“The toll exacted on us for merely fulfilling our journalistic duties is staggering,” the letter states. “We are subjected to detentions, interrogations, and torture by the Israeli military, all for the ‘crime’ of journalistic integrity.”

One organizer complained that the White House Correspondents’ Association — which represents the hundreds of journalists who cover the president — largely has been silent since the first weeks of the war about the killings of Palestinian journalists. WHCA did not respond to request for comment.

According to a preliminary investigation released Friday by the Committee to Protect Journalists, nearly 100 journalists have been killed covering the war in Gaza. Israel has defended its actions, saying it has been targeting militants.

“Since the Israel-Gaza war began, journalists have been paying the highest price— their lives—to defend our right to the truth. Each time a journalist dies or is injured, we lose a fragment of that truth,” CPJ Program Director Carlos Martínez de la Serna said in a statement.

Sandra Tamari, executive director of Adalah Justice Project, a U.S.-based Palestinian advocacy group that helped organize the letter from journalists in Gaza, said “it is shameful for the media to dine and laugh with President Biden while he enables the Israeli devastation and starvation of Palestinians in Gaza.”

In addition, Adalah Justice Project started  an email campaign targeting 12 media executives  at various news outlets — including The Associated Press — expected to attend the dinner who previously signed onto a letter calling for the protection of journalists in Gaza.

“How can you still go when your colleagues in Gaza asked you not to?” a demonstrator asked guests heading in. “You are complicit.”
