How to write a KPMG cover letter

When applying for a position at KPMG, your cover letter is an opportunity for you to tell your story, without being stuck in the formatting constraints of the KPMG resume. The best format for writing a cover letter is:

  • Address the employer with a formal salutation. For example, “Dear/Hello (name of the recipient).” If you do not know the name of the recipient, you can refer to them as the hiring manager.
  • The next step is to state the position you are applying for and how you found the opening.
  • Make a brief statement about why you’re interested in the position. Write a paragraph about why you are the perfect candidate for the job.
  • State your skills and work experience. Ensure your skills and experiences are similar to the job position. When highlighting skills, provide the accomplishment you have achieved.
  • Conclude your letter with a forward-looking statement. For example, “I look forward to discussing the position with you further.”

“Dear Ms. Moen,

I am writing to express my interest in the Audit Assistant position now available with KPMG.

I have always been good with math and I love working with numbers, which is why I decide that becoming an auditor was my best career choice. I have a degree in accounting and I have the education, skills and training needed to fill this position. I have worked as a manager for the last four years where my main job was handling general accounting duties such as preparing and making deposits and handling vendors.

I also helped the company to create a budget and found ways for the business to cut back on some of its expenses, without sacrificing quality or customer service. I performed internal audits regularly and located problems before they got out of hand. I also found ways to improve the way the audits were being performed while maintaining efficiency.

I have outstanding computer skills with experience using a variety of different software and MS programs. I work well in a group setting, have excellent customer service skills and have the ability to adapt to changes quickly.

Becoming an Audit Assistant with your company is a huge step in reaching my career goals and I am sure that I will be a great asset to your company. I would like to thank you at this time for considering me for this position and I am confident that you will agree I have the skills needed to handle this job.

I hope to hear from you very soon. Please call (555)-555-5555 to set up an interview.

October 2, 2014

Dear KPMG Recruiter,

I am excited to apply for the Federal Tax Summer Intern position with KPMG, as advertised in the Isenberg Experience system. I am a junior pursuing an Accounting degree in the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and expect to graduate in May of 2016. As my enclosed resume reflects, my exceptional communication, leadership, and teamwork skills in addition to the breadth and depth of my work experience make me an ideal candidate for this position.

Through my experience auditing client files and accounts at Boston Partners Financial Group, I have both an understanding of and an aptitude for advisory and compliance functions. In my time at Captain Famous Pizza, I have successfully been tasked with recording purchase orders and employees’ salary information and examining more efficient ways to allocate inventory expenses.

Becoming a federal tax summer intern with your company is a huge step in reaching my career goals and I am sure that I will be a great asset to your company. I would like to thank you at this time for considering me for this position and I am confident that you will agree I have the skills needed to handle this job.

Sincerely,”

“Dear hiring manager,

I’m writing to apply for the position of Audit Assistant, which I found on the company website in the list of open positions and which seemed to me the most attractive among all the alternatives.

During my education at the Higher School of Economics, I found myself interested in subjects devoted to accounting and auditing. With my educational background and a strong interest in business, I think I will be a great asset to your company. I have pretty good analytical abilities, and that’s what I suppose would help me to meet the requirements of the job I apply for. Also, I feel that I have the appropriate level of English skills to be able to handle conversations on different topics, including special ones.

It seems to me that I have enough intelligence level, enough qualifications and dedication to be essential for this job.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,”

“POSITION: Tax assitant

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing this letter about the VAT assistant vacancy advertised on your website and would like to express my interest in the position.

I am an ACCA Affiliate and I’ve always had a love for numbers and so naturally chose to study accountancy, and whilst studying for the ACCA qualification I had the opportunity to study the tax module, which I very much enjoyed…so much so I chose to sit the optional Advanced Taxation module, which I was also able to pass the first time.

Whilst studying I feel that KPMG offers access to the best tools and opportunities to help me reach my full potential.

Please find attached my CV, which includes further details of my qualification, skills and experience. If you require further information I am happy to discuss this with you via telephone or email.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely”

Resume tips

Man using computer

The primary purpose of a resume is to create interest about yourself so that you are selected for an interview - it is a marketing document of your candidacy! Campus recruiters receive hundreds of resumes so it’s very important to create a simple and clear snapshot of your experiences and what you have to offer.

There is no standard format for a resume, but make sure you include the following key areas:

  • Include your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address.
  • Include school(s) attended, major(s), minor(s), GPA, and graduation date.
  • Relevant coursework and academic awards are helpful, but not critical.
  • Include work experience and activities where you developed skills that are applicable to the opportunity.
  • Include the position held, name and location of organization, and dates of employment.
  • Help us paint a picture of your achievements; use action verbs to describe your responsibilities with emphasis on specific skills and tasks, and be sure to quantify your experiences and accomplishments (e.g., lead a team of four; increased sales by 5%).

Activities, leadership roles, and interests

  • Share self-led projects, volunteer positions, extracurricular activities, and professional organizations; don’t just list them, but share what you accomplished within those roles.
  • Recruiters are typically looking for transferable skills such as: leadership, teamwork, communication, organization and client-facing skills.

General resume tips

  • Be concise. Try to keep your resume to one page.
  • Tailor the content of your resume to the role that you are applying to.
  • Keep it neat, attractive, organized and easy to read.
  • Ensure formatting is consistent.
  • Deliver on the firm’s expectations. Read the job description thoroughly and submit your application before the deadline.
  • Be professional and appropriate in your language.

Interview tips

You may think that an interview is just a chance for the firm to assess if your skills and experiences match their hiring needs. However, it is also an opportunity for YOU to determine if the firm and position is the right opportunity for you.

Research the firm to learn more about the interviewers (if information is provided), culture and career paths available. Preparing questions in advance is important, as it shows your keen interest in the firm. Also, familiarize yourself with the job description.

Perform a self-assessment by reviewing your resume thoroughly, noting your strengths, weaknesses, and key skills, and how they relate to the opportunity. Know the image that you want to portray to the interviewer. There is no need to be nervous as the topic of conversation is YOU!

Practise, practise, practise!

Prepare potential interview questions based on the role and practise your interview responses. Make sure your responses are structured, answer the question directly, and relate your past accomplishments back to the role that you are interviewing for. Because this is a two-way conversation, don’t forget to prepare questions at the end to ask your interviewers!

How to use the STAR Method to answer behavioural interview questions:

  • S - Situation: Describe the event or situation that you were in
  • T  - Task: Explain the task you had to complete
  • A  - Action: Describe the specific action you took to complete the task
  • R  - Result: Close with the result of your efforts

Interview attire

Dress confidently and comfortably, but always maintain a professional image. We recommend dressing business casual.

The interview

A good interview allows both the interviewer and the candidate the opportunity to gather information they need to make an informed decision.

Remember to:

  • Highlight key accomplishments and experiences
  • Listen to the interviewer and the questions being asked
  • Don’t use prepared examples if they don’t relate to the question
  • If you need to organize your thoughts, pause; silence is better than no structure to your response
  • Know your strengths and identify areas of improvement
  • Ask questions, including the hiring timeline and next steps
  • Thank the interviewer and ask for a business card or email address.

After the interview

Send a personal thank you to your interviewer no later than one day after the interview. Be concise, gracious, and reaffirm your interest in joining the firm.

Virtual interview tips

  • Dress professionally
  • Keep your background tidy or use a virtual background
  • Find a quiet place with minimal disruption
  • Use headphones

Rather than focus only on rebuilding prisons, it is time to focus on reforming the system

kpmg internship cover letter

Florida's prison system, according to a study by KPMG, needs $2.2 billion "for immediate fixes." The Florida Legislature has approved $100 million in recurring funds, well short of what is needed.

KPMG was paid $2 million by lawmakers to develop a 20-year plan. It found that a third of the state’s correctional facilities were in critical or poor condition. In essence, these aging facilities are falling apart. And more prisoners are on the way. The situation is bad enough to post a security risk for inmates as well as guards.

Arguments in favor of spending more money on prisons aren't popular in Tallahassee, and $100 million seems like quite a lot of money. Lawmakers' views on the subject would no doubt be more favorable toward more spending were ever have been to prison, or had a relative sent to prison.

"A vast majority of legislators will never step foot inside of a prison to visit during their entire eight years of office,” Jeff Brandes, a former Republican state lawmaker from St. Petersburg tells Daytona Beach News-Journal reporter Mark Harper, who wrote Sunday's cover story on the subject. Brandes started a think tank, the Florida Policy Project.

Harper spoke with prison advocates about the problems. Families of inmates. Mothers, sisters, daughters, fiancées and other loved ones. Also former inmates themselves.

Jackie Dunn of Fernandina Beach is a data analyst, Mark writes. The arrest and conviction of her son in a fatal DUI wreck disrupted her life in multiple ways, but mostly by opening her eyes to the challenges of the corrections system.

Florida's criminal justice and corrections system needs changes, she says, "but lawmakers are not brave enough to make the moves."

It seems that one of the best approaches to spending less on prisons would be to have fewer prisoners.

Harper writes that Florida is the far-and-away leader  of states with inmates serving life sentences. And that lawmakers have not put in place major reforms such as implementing access to parole or rescinding the 1990s-era "two-strikes-you're-out" law.

Those are issues that seem to demand further attention.

One example Harper points out is the story of Steve Brana who had been in prison for nearly 25 years of a life sentence, a young man who dreamed of becoming a Navy diver. Instead, in 1997, he was convicted of armed robbery, his second strike under Florida’s then-new Prison Releasee Reoffender Law.

In the 1990s, “three-strikes-you're-out" laws were all the rage. Prison experts In recent years have been rethinking the wisdom of those policies, which take the power of sentencing out of the hands of judges. Florida lawmakers decided to go even further and pass a two-strikes law.

That means judges must give enhanced sentences to people convicted of felonies within three years of their release from prison after first being convicted of a felony carrying at least a one-year sentence. For some felonies, that means 30 years without the possibility of parole. For others, it could result in life, Harper writes.

Brana was arrested at age 16, and charged with a string of burglaries. He was convicted as an adult and served nearly four years in prison. A year after his release, he was convicted of armed robbery. Two strikes. Life sentence at age 22.

You can easily argue Brana could have avoided jail by not committing a crime, but is a life sentence necessary?

The Florida Campaign for Justice Reform argues that the state's criminal justice system is structured to punish individuals rather than to rehabilitate them. Maybe it is time to focus more on reforms than incarceration.

Sample cover letter for Internship position at KPMG

Internship-taxation.

I am a first-year student at (omitted) School of Law and I write to apply for a summer internship. I am particularly drawn to KPMG because I have a strong interest in taxation and corporate finance law, long fostered by constant exposure to personal wealth management, my family’s business. Through my work with my family’s company and as a banking policy analyst in Washington DC, I developed a keen interest in tax and financial law. I plan on beginning the MBA portion of the JD/MBA degree next fall, and my goal is to work in tax with a focus on mergers, acquisitions, and restructuring.

As I entered law school with the purpose of practicing taxation and financial law, I sought opportunities to learn all I can in these practice areas. During my first month of school, I helped found the (omitted) Law Society, and I currently serve as secretary, providing an excellent avenue to interact with tax lawyers and professors and gain their insights into the practice area.

I realize it is atypical for a first-year law student lacking an educational background in accounting or business to seek an internship with your company. While my legal education will serve me well, it is my interest in business that drives me. I wish to be surrounded by and learn from professionals at your company, because I will gain a great deal of knowledge and experience in the taxation field, and also be able to explore other areas within the industry.

I enclose a copy of my resume and appreciate your consideration. I hope to have the opportunity to visit with KMPG in person to explore internship possibilities. Thank you, in advance, for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.
