Academic Practice MA AP | PGDAP | PGCAP – Online Course

Develop your academic practice and gain global perspectives on higher education with this professional postgraduate teaching qualification designed to enhance your career in higher education.

What is academic practice?

Academic practice is the term used to define any work that uncovers, researches, and teaches information, knowledge and learning materials. Academic practitioners include researchers, higher education and university lecturers, professors, teachers, analysts, librarians, and academic laboratory technicians – their contributions go toward providing students in higher education with a better standard of knowledge within their field.

The University of Liverpool’s online Master of Arts in Academic Practice is a qualification for those who wish to enhance their academic practice and develop their higher education teaching career, providing students with invaluable teaching methods and techniques, informed by global pedagogical viewpoints.

Our online academic practice programme benefits students from diverse backgrounds by providing those with or without prior experience teaching in higher education (HE) an opportunity to develop their academic practice, academic leadership, and scholarship-related knowledge and skills to enhance their careers and support students’ learning.

There are three study awards for the programme – starting with the Postgraduate Certificate Academic Practice (PGCAP) and progressing to the Postgraduate Diploma Academic Practice (PGDAP) and full Master of Arts Academic Practice (MA AP).

The online PGCAP programme has two pathways depending on a student’s background. For those who do not hold a substantive teaching position in higher education, our first pathway is a route to gaining a PGCAP that will provide an excellent grounding in the theory and practice of teaching and supporting learning in higher education in a global context.

For those students who do hold a substantive teaching position which would enable them to demonstrate Descriptor Level 2 of the Professional Standards Framework (PSF 2023), our second pathway enables you to earn a PGCAP and simultaneously gain recognition as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) through our unique partnership with Advance HE , the UK’s foremost agency for driving excellence and developing leadership in higher education.

The Postgraduate Diploma Academic Practice builds on learning from both pathways of the PGCAP to further develop academic leadership, scholarship, and pedagogic research in preparation for progression to the MA AP which gives participants the opportunity to complete a supervised academic practice project.

Active learning plays a fundamental part in the programme structure on all awards. You will have opportunities to demonstrate your understanding of educational concepts and barriers to learning and your ability to apply pedagogical theory from varied global perspectives to the classroom. Furthermore, you will be encouraged to utilise international educational frameworks to design lessons, set assignments and design learning outcomes that can be applied to your own context or to a global teaching space.

The online interaction with international peers and those working within higher education will also provide you with opportunities to give and receive feedback relevant to academic practice and develop your knowledge from peers who may have different experiences across a variety of educational contexts. By the end of your studies, you will be prepared to take your practice to the next level within the ever-changing higher education sector.

Download a prospectus for more details on this programme including module information.

This programme consists of the following modules. Participants are required to complete 60 credits to achieve the PGCAP (both pathways), 120 credits to achieve the PGDAP and 180 credits to complete the MA AP.

Under all pathways, students will be encouraged to contribute to learning, providing case studies and perspectives from their local contexts. This will create a strong global and active learning experience and a global network of contacts.

PGCAP Award

Students without relevant experience teaching in higher education will complete all modules, including one optional module, in PGCAP Pathway One (Standard Pathway). Applicants with relevant experience currently teaching in higher education will complete all modules in Pathway Two (FHEA Pathway) and be required to demonstrate Descriptor 2 of the Professional Standards Framework (PSF 2023) to achieve PGCAP and FHEA.

PGDAP and MA AP Awards

Students on both pathways progress to the same modules for the PGDAP and MA AP. Students who progress to the final award, the MA AP, will engage in an Academic Practice Project relevant to their higher education careers and develop their scholarship of learning and teaching.

For more information on the modules, including syllabus and learning outcomes, please  download our programme booklet .

All applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you want to discuss your previous qualifications and experience before applying, please contact us now via LiveChat.

For both PGCAP pathways, applicants must have:

  • A degree equivalent to an upper-second class UK bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

For pathway two leading to Fellowship (FHEA), applicants must also:

  • Hold a teaching position in a higher education institution with sufficient depth and breadth of practice with learners that enables them to demonstrate all Dimensions of the Professional Standards Framework (PSF 2023).

Accreditation

All UK universities are regulated and monitored by a government body, the QAA. Some of the older, well-established UK Universities have been awarded a Royal Charter. The Royal Charter was granted to the University of Liverpool in 1903; it is a sign of proven academic quality and allows the University to independently award Bachelors, Masters, and to doctorate degrees.

The University of Liverpool is also funded by the Government (Department of Education and Science) via the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). HEFCE established the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) to oversee the quality of degrees in HEFCE-funded universities.

The US and Canada are happy to accept the standard of degrees awarded by universities in the UK as equivalent to their own corresponding degrees.

The degrees offered via the Internet through Laureate Online Education are fully recognised Master's degree programmes of the University of Liverpool with exactly the same status and standing as other Masters level degrees of the University.

  • Complete your research degree (MPhil/PhD) in a Faculty known for its internationally-acclaimed research
  • Explore scholarship opportunities
  • Benefit from expert supervision and researcher training
  • Enjoy excellent facilities and great employment connections

Each year, each Faculty provides the University Research Degrees Committee with a summative report on the progress of all its eligible postgraduate research students.

Throughout your studies, you will also have the support of LJMU’s Graduate School which offers expert advice and guidance to those enrolled on MPhil and PhD programmes.

How learning is monitored on your programme

To cater for the wide-ranging content of our courses and the varied learning preferences of our students, we offer a range of assessment methods on each programme. Assessment techniques vary from module to module to reflect relevant assessment approaches and the key learning points of each topic.

Final examination for both the MPhil and the PhD is by thesis and oral examination.

The MPhil differs from the PhD in terms of the depth of study required and the extent of your personal contribution to knowledge. It requires competence in conducting an independent enquiry as well as in the use of appropriate research methods and techniques. Examiners will expect you to display satisfactory background knowledge of the subject.

To gain a PhD you are expected to show mastery of a special field and to have made an original personal contribution to the understanding of a problem, the advancement of knowledge, or the generation of new ideas. Examiners will expect you to be at the forefront of understanding in your chosen topic.

If you are studying for an MPhil you may be able to progress to a PhD, via written and oral assessments in Year 2 (for full-time students) or Year 3 (for part-time students).

The Graduate Market in 2024 report surveys 100 of the UK’s largest graduate employers, gaining their views on the graduate labour market, recruitment activity, and industry trends.

This year, Liverpool ranked 20th out of more than 140 universities in the UK when graduate employers were asked which campuses they regularly engaged with to recruit.

The annual report by High Fliers surveys 100 firms that are featured in the Times Top 100 Graduate Employers guide, which includes companies such as Accenture, Apple, the BBC, Goldman Sachs, Google, IBM, Teach First, NHS, Tesco, Unilever and the UK Civil Service.

This research, conducted during January 2024, provides an assessment of graduate recruitment in 2023 and looks ahead to how many vacancies are available for new graduates in 2024.  It also analyses the latest starting salaries on offer to new graduates, reviews the promotions employers have been using to publicise their vacancies during the 2023-2024 recruitment season, and the number of job applications employers have received so far.

Zambia visit shows SSW’s global impact

A UNC School of Social Work delegation saw how their research helped a nonprofit create jobs in rural areas.

A small delegation from the UNC School of Social Work visited the growing rural town of Solwezi (population 90,000) in the North-Western Province of Zambia in March. They came to learn about the impact of local women’s savings and credit groups and their financial literacy training.

The trip was coordinated by Gina Chowa and Rain Masa from the school’s center for  Global Social Development Innovations in partnership with longtime collaborator Mathias Zimba, executive director of  Rising Fountains Development Program in Zambia.

“As partners, we work together to identify ideas and practices that will change lives for the better,” Masa said. “Researchers and graduate students at the school can help build the evidence needed to demonstrate to policymakers, officials and the business community what is needed to  improve the lives of rural Zambians .”

Improving lives in six countries

Masa is an associate professor who also serves as GSDI’s research director. He has worked collaboratively on both economic security and HIV treatment projects with Rising Fountains, a Zambian nonprofit dedicated to improving the livelihoods of women and children in rural areas.

Masa emphasized how community involvement localizes these economic programs and increases their chance of success and relevance.

“Economic security is the focal point of our work,” said Masa. “We provide funding and, maybe more importantly, we are available to Mathias and his team for ongoing capacity support as well.”

Paving career paths

During the visit to her native Zambia, Chowa was visibly moved at the end of a day spent at a teen center and a church. The delegation heard from over a dozen enthusiastic groups of about 20 women each and the men who had joined in support of them.

“These people. This is why I do the work I do,” Chowa said.

Following the presentations, the delegation went to see the small business owners in action. These included a man who bought spare parts for just one bicycle and now runs a repair shop with several assistants, craftswomen who purchased a sewing machine and yarn to create and sell clothing, and a woman who uses a mobile phone and SIM cards to help townspeople make financial transactions.

“This is not about politics,” said one Solwezi community leader. “I stand in the middle in support of our people helping better their lives and those of their families.”

At the end of the visit, local residents piled baskets full of sweet melons, gourds and pineapples at the front of a small church as parting gifts.

“The bounty and generosity of spirit of the nearly 150 people of Solwezi whom we visited with earlier this month made a lasting impression,” said Alice Washington, a longtime member of the school’s advisory board.

Texas A&M Blazes Trail In Semiconductor Education And Training

Artist's rendering of a CPU

From powering mobile phones to safeguarding national defense, semiconductors have become increasingly vital in today’s world. The growing demand for skilled professionals calls for semiconductor training.

Starting in fall 2025, Texas A&M University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will introduce a new Master of Science program focused on microelectronics and semiconductors. This program will blend digital and analog integrated circuit design with semiconductor manufacturing, ensuring students are proficient in both areas and can collaborate effectively between design and fabrication processes. The development of this program is made possible by a $1 million gift from Samsung Austin Semiconductor .

Before its launch, the program must receive approval from the state’s Higher Education Coordinating Board and undergo authorization within Texas A&M University.

“We at the Texas A&M System recognize the importance of a highly educated workforce that understands microelectronics and semiconductors,” said Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp. “I think you will see Aggies leading the way as the country increases the amount of domestic semiconductor manufacturing.”

The new degree is in addition to the semiconductor efforts already underway within The Texas A&M University System. The Texas A&M System is at the forefront of semiconductor research and training, establishing the  Texas A&M Semiconductor Institute  in May 2023 to focus on the need for trained semiconductor professionals and coordinate efforts in response to federal and state CHIPS initiatives. The institute, in conjunction with the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES), is committed to collaborating with semiconductor companies, coordinating system member research and fostering workforce training.

Also, beginning in fall 2024, electrical and computer engineering will offer three certificates to address the state and national need for trained experts in the field of semiconductors. The certificates are in response to the 2022 U.S. Congress CHIPS and Science Act, a strategic approach for the country to be a leader in domestic manufacturing, create more employment opportunities, fortify supply chains and accelerate future research directions.

“As the demand for semiconductor expertise rises, we remain committed to training the next generation of skilled professionals in this critical sector,” said Dr. Robert H. Bishop, vice chancellor and dean of engineering and director of TEES. “Through collaboration with industry partners and the Texas A&M Semiconductor Institute, we are poised to make significant strides in semiconductor research and education.”

The certificates include digital integrated circuit design, semiconductor manufacturing and electromagnetic fields and microwave circuit design.

The digital integrated circuit design certificate will be for graduate students in electrical and computer engineering and focus on the design stage of digital integrated circuits (IC). These are circuits designed to perform specific tasks, like signal processing and machine learning computing. After the design stage, the corresponding IC chips are fabricated by the manufacturer.

The semiconductor manufacturing certificate will focus on manufacturing semiconductor chip products and will be offered to electrical and computer engineering undergraduate and graduate students. Students will learn the process by which devices or chips are created, including photolithography (layering transistors and metal wires on silicon wafers), assembly and packaging.

The electromagnetic fields and microwave circuit design certificate will be for any engineering or science graduate student who wants to focus on high-frequency circuit analysis, design and implementation.

“We have proposed new certificates related to semiconductors given the growth of the industry as well as insufficient workforce development,” said Dr. Jiang Hu, a professor in the electrical and computer engineering department.

The Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering will offer a safety in semiconductor processing certificate, which will be available to all engineering and science graduate students.

This certificate will be integrated with the  Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center . The center’s primary role is to spearhead the integration of safety principles into chemical, oil and gas processing and, now, semiconductor manufacturing and energy transition.

“ This certificate program gives engineers a new tool to add to their existing portfolio so they can learn how to safely deal with chemicals and processes in the semiconductor manufacturing sector,” said Dr. Sreeram Vaddiraju, an associate professor in the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering.

The electrical and computer engineering and chemical engineering departments also have two additional certificates in the planning stages: chip design verification and analog chip design.

The integration of the Master of Science degree, certificates and training programs in microelectronics and semiconductor manufacturing serves to bolster the entire spectrum of semiconductor companies in Texas, including GlobalWafers, Samsung Austin Semiconductor, Texas Instruments, NXP, Maxim, Silicon Labs, Cypress and more.
