Institute for Natural Language Processing

The Institute for Natural Language Processing (IMS) carries out teaching and research at the interface between language and computation, unifying the disciplines of linguistics and computer science.

Computational linguistics -- the computational processing and analysis of human language -- is a broad interdiscplinary area of research and development. Our institute aims at bridging the gap between foundational research into language and the development of technologies for society. With 6 professors, over 50 scientists and 200 students in the study programs B.Sc. Maschinelle Sprachverarbeitung and M.Sc. Computational Linguistics, IMS counts among the largest hubs of computational linguistics in Germany and Europe.

Doctoral Studies (PhD)

Our department hosts many PhD students from all over the world. Language Science and Technology at Saarland University offers a vibrant environment which is internationally known for its innovative research in computational linguistics and natural language processing, psycholinguistics, linguistics, phonetics and speech technology. Over the past 25 years, the department has grown into one of the largest centers in computational linguistics in Europe. The department also closely collaborates with the German Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), which develops cutting-edge language technology applications.

Our doctoral students usually work as research assistants in research projects such as the Collaborative Research Center "Information Desity and Linguistic Encoding" ( SFB 1102 ). An alternative is to apply for PhD grants at various foundations ( Research in Germany ; funding opportunities may also exist through agencies in your home country). Admission to our department's PhD program depends primarily upon finding an appropriate supervisor, who must have the status of professor or independent research group leader. This means that you must find a supervisor who is sufficiently familiar with the area in which you would like to pursue your PhD.

Students admitted to pursue a PhD degree do not pay any tuition fees, regardless of their nationality. PhD student wages usually follow the TV-L 13 scale.

All formal requirements are contained in the regulations for doctoral degree studies ( Promotionsordnung ).

PhD position in Neural Machine Translation (CIS, LMU Munich), German required

Main navigation.

  • Publications

I am expanding my research group, which is located at the Center for Information and Language Processing at the University of Munich (LMU).

This is a fully funded position for doing a PhD on my ERC Starting Grant. Unlike most other positions in my research group, it requires strong knowledge of German.

Candidates will focus on cutting edge research into using deep learning techniques to solve machine translation (neural machine translation). The group is a well-known machine translation research group with strong interests in related natural language problems. The working language of the group is English, but the research topic for this particular position requires knowledge of German, as the focus will be on integrating linguistic information into neural machine translation for translation to and from German.

Candidates will have possibilities to teach, supervise bachelors/masters students, and to collaborate on grant applications.

CIS has an active community working on cutting-edge natural language processing. There will be significant interaction with the research groups of Hinrich Schütze (deep learning and a variety of NLP problems) and Helmut Schmid (neural machine translation, parsing, tagging, morphology). We also have several active collaborations with colleagues at other universities.

The University of Munich is one of the top research universities in Europe. It was the highest ranked institution on several measures in the Exzellenzinitiative funding program organized by the German national science foundation in 2012.

Munich and the Upper Bavaria area are among the regions in Europe with the highest quality of living. The area is also home to a large number of high-tech, service and manufacturing companies, including many that use NLP technology.

If you are interested in applying please send me: * a cover letter. Clearly indicate which position you are applying for and include possible starting dates. * a CV * a statement of research interests * the names and addresses of two references * transcripts

The deadline for applications for this position is November 23rd, 2018. Note that a Masters degree in a relevant subject is required.

LMU is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the diversity of its staff. We strongly encourage applications from qualified women. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of equally qualified candidates.

Thanks, Alexander Fraser -- Prof. Dr. Alexander Fraser University of Munich (LMU) Center for Information and Language Processing Oettingenstrasse 67 80538 Munich Germany

Graduate School Empirical and Applied Linguistics Graduate School Empirical and Applied Linguistics

University of münster • münster.

  • Course details
  • Costs / Funding
  • Requirements / Registration

Courses are held in German (50%) and English (50%). PhD students can choose to write the dissertation in either language.

31 May (winter semester) 30 November (summer semester)

The Graduate School Empirical and Applied Linguistics offers promising young researchers an interdisciplinary PhD programme with a focus on linguistics. Professors are drawn from the following broad range of subjects, thus ensuring multidisciplinary collaboration:

  • General Linguistics (Typology, Language Documentation and Description, Theoretical Linguistics)
  • Second Language Acquisition / Applied Linguistics
  • German Linguistics
  • English Philology
  • Romance Linguistics (French)
  • Romance Linguistics (Italian)
  • Romance Linguistics (Spanish)
  • Dutch Philology
  • Scandinavian Studies
  • Slavic Studies
  • Indo-European Studies
  • Greek Philology
  • Byzantine Studies
  • Latin Philology
  • Medieval and Modern Latin Philology
  • Psychology (Psycholinguistics)
  • Anthropology

Doctoral students in the PhD programme Empirical and Applied Linguistics can write their dissertation on any linguistic subject area, including applied linguistics, second language acquisition, and a linguistic topic within the framework of a specific philology. Students can choose whether to focus on a more theoretical or a more practical topic, provided that the dissertation has a solid empirical basis. The goal of the PhD programme is to ensure that the doctoral student is proficient in various methods of linguistic data collection and analysis and can therefore use these methods in a critical and reflective way.

All doctoral students will receive individual supervision from two faculty members. In order to enable a well supervised and efficiently completed PhD programme, a written supervision agreement detailing the student's goals and time frame will be drawn up before the doctoral student takes up her or his studies.

Studying at the Graduate School thus involves a constant exchange of ideas with the other doctoral students and exposure to the everyday workings of scientific enquiry. Because of its flexibility, the programme can accommodate each student's individual interests and plans for the future.

All doctoral students will meet on a regular basis in an informal type of colloquium or workshop in order to discuss methodological and theoretical issues. On three different occasions, they also have to attend the more formal Colloquium of the Doctoral Students where they have to report on the progress of their dissertation research and preparation:

  • Proposal defence, usually at the end of the first semester
  • Mid-term review, usually towards the end of the third semester
  • Thesis defence at the end of the fifth semester

In addition to these obligatory courses, the programme comprises elements that can be tailored to meet each student's individual preferences and needs:

  • An individually planned obligatory study programme covering 10 ECTS points
  • An elective course from the element Teaching, Lecturing, Publishing that comprises at least 8 ECTS points
  • An elective course from the element Organisation of Scientific Activities and Supplementary Studies equalling at least 12 ECTS points
  • International guest lecturers
  • Specialist literature in other languages
  • Language training provided

Students must pay a semester contribution fee of 316.98 EUR per semester. This includes a "semester ticket" covering public transportation in the greater Münster area as well as the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

You can find more information here: https://www.uni-muenster.de/studieninteressierte/en/einschreibung/semesterbeitrag.shtml

We recommend that students budget at least 900 EUR per month to cover personal expenses (accommodation, living expenses, health insurance).

The Graduate School Empirical and Applied Linguistics does not offer scholarships for the entire duration of the doctoral studies. However, there is the possibility to receive financial support for international conferences and stays abroad.

University degree: Master's or Magister or an equivalent degree (Diplom, Staatsexamen, Maîtrise) For details regarding applications, see: http://www.uni-muenster.de/Promotionskolleg-Sprachwissenschaft/en/index.html

All students should at least understand written and spoken German and English well enough to be able to follow lectures and to read scientific papers. Should these language skills be missing, intensive language courses should be taken in order to meet these minimum requirements as quickly as possible.

Being able to actively speak German and English is not mandatory because you can meet all of the course and study requirements, including writing the dissertation, with just one language. However, without some basic communicative skills in spoken German, life in Münster will not really be fun.

E-mail: [email protected]

As in all popular university cities in Germany, accommodation is in high demand and is not easy to find in Münster – but it’s not impossible either!

Please contact the International Office (Bachelor's and Master's students) or the WWU Graduate Centre (doctoral candidates) for advice. Please also note that the University of Münster (like most German public universities) does not have its own student halls of residence.

Doctoral Programme

The Institute of Applied Linguistics and Translatology (IALT) offers PhD candidates two options. You can either follow your own path and complete your doctoral thesis on an individual basis, or you can follow the path laid out in the Structured Doctoral Programme in Translatology and Applied Linguistics. The programme offers a curriculum of lectures and seminars parallel to the doctoral thesis. Credit points will be awarded for giving lectures and other contributions.

enlarge the image: Mehrere Promovierende sitzen am runden Tisch und diskutieren.

Structured Doctoral Programme in Translatology and Applied Linguistics

The programme is designed to support the completion of a doctoral thesis in one of the subject areas IALT has in its research and teaching portfolios. It also gives candidates an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in teaching internships.

Generally, it takes three years (six semesters on-campus) to complete the structured doctoral programme. The total workload amounts to 180 credit points.

Admission requirements

General admission requirements:

  • You have earned a master’s degree in a consecutive study programme (master’s degree after bachelor’s degree), or
  • You have earned a degree in a university programme that is relevant to the subject you intend to pursue in your doctoral thesis. The programme must have had a standard period of study of at least 8 semesters, or you have completed the necessary state exam for the programme.

Programme-specific admission requirements:

  • You have a topic for your thesis and a letter confirming their supervision from a professor at the Institute of Applied Linguistics and Translatology.
  • You have language skills for the language that will be the main subject of your doctoral project. A level of C2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference is required. You do not need to provide proof of language competence, if the language in question is your native language.
  • If German is not your native language, you must provide a certificate of German language proficiency according to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference. If German is your native language, you do not need to provide proof of language competence.

Application

You can apply to join the doctoral programme in the winter semester (application deadline June 1) and in the summer semester (application deadline February 1). The Institute of Applied Linguistics and Translatology’s examination board will consider your application and decide whether or not you will be accepted.

Study Linguistics in Germany: 30 Universities with 54 English Degree Programs

All important info for international students in germany (2024/2025).

Linguistics traditionally means the scientific study of language, including the areas of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics - how language is produced and what it means. Many degrees take this very wide theoretical view, but linguistics degrees can also focus on one or more particular languages (typical offerings in Germany include German- and English-language linguistics). In addition, the relatively new field of “computational linguistics” connects traditional linguistics with computer science and artificial intelligence, aiming both to solve problems in linguistics through computer processing and make machines more able to (naturally) communicate with humans. In short, this well-established field is far from boring - check out our diverse list of programs and get shortlisting!

Welcome to our incoming Ph.D. students!

We are excited to introduce our incoming Ph.D. cohort, who will be joining the department in the fall of 2024! Please give them all a warm welcome – we’re so glad you’re joining us!

Below are the students’ self-provided profiles:

Tilden "Tilly” Brooks

I come to Stanford from Yale University, where I received a BA in linguistics in 2023 and where I am concurrently pursuing a JD. I am broadly interested in two areas: the language of law and the law of language. I focus both on the effects of law and policy decisions on marginalized linguistic communities (the law of language) and the application of linguistic theories, research methods, and tools to interpretive legal processes (the language of law). My linguistic interests are concentrated in formal semantics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics, though I have a background in historical linguistics and a growing interest in computational methods.

Junseon Hong

I received my B.A. and M.A. in English Language and Literature from Seoul National University. My research interests lie in formal semantics and pragmatics, particularly how conventional meaning interacts with discourse context in non-canonical sentence forms. My thesis investigates the semantics and pragmatics of English rising declaratives, and I look forward to broadening my scope to encompass other languages and exploring other non-canonical sentence forms in my future work.

Aslı Kuzgun

I completed my BA in English Language Teaching at İstanbul Bilgi University, where I met the field of linguistics and went on to earn an MA in Linguistics at Boğaziçi University in İstanbul, Turkey. I am mainly interested in the morpho-syntax of Turkic languages with a focus on case, agreement, and nominalizations. I am also an NLP enthusiast with research and professional experience in the development of various linguistic corpora in Turkish and English. I am looking forward to combining my two interests together at Stanford by continuing research in theoretical linguistics while equipping myself with the computational tools available at Stanford.

Kim Tien Nguyen

I grew up in Vietnam and earned my BA in Linguistics from Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany. In my BA thesis and a subsequent study, I experimentally investigated the pragmatic effects of topicality encoded by intonation and sentence structure on scope interpretation in German. Alongside pursuing my primary research interests in semantics/pragmatics and psycholinguistics, I also look forward to delving into computational linguistics during my graduate studies. By combining insights from formal linguistic analysis, psycholinguistic experimentation, and computational methods, I seek to explore language production and comprehension as fundamentally probabilistic processes. I am very excited to embark on my PhD journey and become a part of the Stanford community!

Nathan Roll

I'm a Bay Area local who graduated with a B.A. in Linguistics and Economics from UC Santa Barbara in 2023. (My senior thesis tested how speech-to-text models can be modified to automatically detect intonation units in conversational speech.) I've since focused on developing variation-robust language technologies as a research assistant at the University of Cambridge while also working as a freelance data scientist. At Stanford, I'm excited to collaborate on projects related to sociophonetics, prosody, and NLP, while also exploring connections to cognitive science and economics.

Yuka Tatsumi

I graduated from Middlebury College in May 2022 with degrees in Neuroscience (major) and Linguistics (minor). For the past two years, I have been working as a lab manager at the Center for Language Science at Pennsylvania State University. Broadly, I am interested in acoustics, phonetics, and psycholinguistics. Since my sophomore year, I have been intrigued by the perception and production of emotional prosody, and to what extent it is universal and language/culture-specific. I am excited to continue exploring this topic through various approaches—behavioral, computational, and neural—at Stanford. My other research projects include: the production effect in lexical memory processing, cross-linguistic comparison of pragmatic particle acquisition, and acoustic adaptation in interactive speech. I am thrilled to be joining the Stanford Linguistics community!
