India observes Republic Day on January 26, every year. Republic Day marks an important event in India’s history. It commemorates the enactment of the constitution of India which came into effect on January 26, 1950, and made the nation into a republic. The main attraction of the day is the Republic Day parade which begins at Rajpath, Delhi, and ends at India Gate. That year the country will be celebrating its 73 rd Republic day. Due to the spike in Covid-19 cases, there will also be no chief minister who will be gracing the event like last year.

On this day, the President hoists the flag at Rajpath, New Delhi. Ceremonious parades showcase India’s defence, cultural abilities, cultural and social heritage.

Adding to the importance of this occasion, French President Emmanuel Macron will be the honored chief guest, marking the sixth time a French leader has attended and highlighting the strong diplomatic relations between India and France.

The focal point of the Republic Day celebrations is the impressive Republic Day Parade on Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath) in New Delhi. This grand event showcases India's military strength with marching contingents from all three branches of the armed forces, impressive displays of military equipment, and thrilling performances by motorcycle teams.

The parade, however, is not solely centered around military displays. It also features a rich display of India's diverse cultural heritage. Each state presents a tableau, a carefully designed float, depicting its unique culture, traditions, and achievements. Dr BR Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution , had said, “Constitution is not a mere lawyers document, it is a vehicle of life and its spirit is always the spirit of Age” and to commemorate the adoption of this constitution of our country' in 1950, we are gearing up to celebrate India's 75th Republic Day, the highlight of which are the tableaus that show India's rich tradition, cultural heritage, spectacles of the nation's progress and achievements and also airshows by the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. The Republic Day Parade rehearsals and the Beating the Retreat ceremonies are already being practiced in full swing in the capital cities of all Indian states but what is its date, history, significance and theme this year?

India marks its Republic Day annually on January 26. This year, the day falls on Friday, with citizens of the country marking it as the 75th Republic Day.

History and Significance:

Republic Day commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of India on January 26, 1950. While India gained independence from the British Raj in 1947, it wasn't until January 26, 1950, that the Constitution of India came into effect, and the country became a sovereign state, declaring it a republic.

The Constituent Assembly held its first session on December 9, 1946 and the last on November 26, 1949 and then the Constitution was adopted a year later. Dr BR Ambedkar headed the Drafting Committee of the Constitution and on this day, India also marks Constitution Day.

Republic Day commemorates the spirit of independent India as on this day, in 1930, the Indian National Congress proclaimed Purna Swaraj from colonial rule. Republic Day also commemorates Indian citizens' power to choose their government democratically hence, the country marks it as a national holiday to commemorate the establishment of the Indian Constitution.

Celebrations:

Republic Day celebrations are marked with much enthusiasm in the country. On this day, the President unfurls the national flag followed by spectacular military and cultural pageantry.

Additionally, the President of India distributes Padma Awards to the deserving civilians of the country and brave soldiers are awarded Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra and Vir Chakra. Live broadcasts and webcasts of the Republic Day Parade are also made accessible every year to millions of people.

Parade time and theme:

The Republic Day 2024 parade theme is ‘ Viksit Bharat ’ and ‘ Bharat – Loktantra ki Matruka ’, emphasising India’s role as a nurturer of democracy and is scheduled to commence at 10:30 am on Friday, January 26 at Kartavya Path in New Delhi where it is expected to last for approximately 90 minutes. The venue has a seating capacity of 77,000, with 42,000 seats reserved for the general public and the Chief Guest this year will be French President Emmanuel Macron and so, the parade will also feature a 95-member marching contingent and a 33-member band contingent from France.

As the nation is gearing up for the grand celebrations of the 75th Indian Republic Day on 26th January 2024, let’s delve into various aspects of this momentous occasion.

About Republic Day of India

Indian Republic Day is a national festival of India that commemorates the enactment of the Constitution of India , which occurred on January 26, 1950 . It is celebrated annually on 26th January and marks the day when the Constitution of India came into effect, making India a sovereign republic.

Historical Background of Indian Republic Day

The historical context of Republic Day of India goes back to India’s struggle for independence. Though India gained independence on 15th August 1947, it did not yet have its own constitution. Instead, its laws and governance system continued to be based on a modified version of the Government of India Act of 1935.

On 29th August 1947, a resolution was moved in the Constituent Assembly for the appointment of a Drafting Committee to draft a permanent constitution of India. Accordingly, the Drafting Committee was appointed under the Chairmanship of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The Committee introduced the final draft of the Constitution in the Constituent Assembly on 4th November 1948.

After many deliberations and some modifications, the Draft Constitution was declared as passed by the Constituent Assembly on 26th November 1949. A few provisions of the Constitution came into force on 26th November 1949 itself. However, the major part of the Constitution came into force on 26th January 1950. It was on that date that India truly became a sovereign republic. The occasion on 26th January 1950 was marked by a salute of 21 guns and the unfurling of the Indian National Flag by Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Thereafter, 26th January was recognized as the Republic Day of India.

26th January was specifically chosen as the ‘date of commencement’ of the Constitution because it was on this day in 1930 that Purna Swaraj Day was celebrated, following the resolution of the Lahore Session (December 1929) of the INC.

Chronological Order of Events during Republic Day Celebrations

Though Indian Republic Day is celebrated across the country, the main event takes place in the national capital – New Delhi. A series of events unfold as the celebrations proceed. These events are listed below chronologically:

The events planned and the themes they are based upon promise to be a grand celebration of the country’s progress, democracy, and rich cultural heritage.

Themes of Republic Day Celebrations 2024

• The themes of the 75th Republic Day 2024 are: ‘ Viksit Bharat’ and ‘Bharat – Loktantra ki Matruka ’.
• These themes have been selected in line with the honorable PM Shri Narendra Modi’s views that ‘India is truly a mother of democracy’.
• These themes will be reflected in the tableaux presented by various states and government departments, showcasing India’s progress in various sectors like technology, infrastructure, and cultural heritage.

Major Highlights of the 75th Indian Republic Day Celebrations 2024

A women-centric republic day parade.

• The 75th Republic Day 2024 Parade at Kartavya Path will be women-centric and women marching contingents will form the major chunk of the parade.
• For the first time, the parade will commence with 100 women artists playing Indian musical instruments such as Sankh, Naadswaram, Nagada, etc.
• The parade will also witness an all-women Tri-Service Contingent marching down Kartavya Path for the first time.
• The CAPF contingents will also consist of women personnel.
• Overall, the India Republic Day Parade 2024 has been designed in a manner to showcase the best representation of women in the Republic Day Parade to date.

French Participation in the Republic Day Parade

• A 33-member band contingent and 95-member marching contingent from France will also take part in the 75th Indian Republic Day Parade 2024.
• Along with the aircraft of the Indian Air Force, the French Air Force, with its one Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft and two Rafale aircraft, will also participate in the fly-past this year.

Farmers as Special Guests

• They consist of farmer representatives of Farmers Producers Organisations (FPOs), beneficiaries of PM-KISAN and micro irrigation schemes.
• This invitation has been extended keeping in line with the Government’s vision of Jan Bhagidari.
• The objective of inviting the farmers is to provide people from all walks of life an opportunity to take part in the national festival.
• A total of 25 tableaux from 16 States/UTs and 9 Ministries/Departments will participate in the parade.

Textile Installation ‘Anant Sutra – The Endless Thread’

• As part of the Republic Day Celebrations 2024, the Ministry of Culture will be showcasing a textile installation named ‘Anant Sutra – The Endless Thread’ at Kartavya Path.
• As a visually stunning tribute to the Indian Saree, this unique installation will showcase nearly 1,900 sarees and drapes from across the country.
• The textiles so installed will have QR codes that can be scanned to know the details about weaving and embroidery arts used in them.

Commemorative Coin & Stamp

• The Ministry of Defense will release a Commemorative Coin and Commemorative Stamp during the celebrations.

National School Band Competition

• As part of the Republic Day Celebrations 2024, a National School Band Competition was conducted at the All-India level.
• It was aimed to evoke feelings of patriotism, unity, and national pride among the school children.

Vande Bharatam 3.0

• The organization of Vande Bharatam 3.0, the third edition of the Vande Bharatam dance competition, also formed a part of Republic Day Celebrations 2024. Groups of women artists selected from this competition will carry out a performance at the Kartavya Path during the Republic Day Parade 2024.

Veer Gatha 3.0

• The Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Ministry of Education organized the third edition of Project Veer Gatha as a part of Republic Day Celebrations 2024.
• A total of 100 school students, called ‘Super-100’, have been declared winners, who will attend the 75th India Republic Day Parade 2024.
• Veer Gatha is a pan-India initiative that was introduced at Azadi ka Amrit Mohatsav to educate school children about the valorous deeds and sacrifices made by the armed services.

Bharat Parv

• The Ministry of Tourism will organize ‘Bharat Parv’ at the Red Fort, Delhi.
• Reflecting the ‘Jan Bhagidari’ theme, it will showcase Republic Day Tableaux, cultural performances, performances by the Military Bands, Crafts Bazaar as well as Food Courts serving pan India cuisines.

Parakram Diwas

• The organization of the event named Parakram Diwas at Red Fort by the Ministry of Culture is also planned as part of the India Republic Day Celebrations 2024.
• It will be based on the life of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
• Various activities planned during the event include 3-D projection mapping/light & sound show, projection mapping with plays/dance performances, etc.

Beating Retreat Ceremony

• The culmination of the 75th Republic Day 2024 Celebrations will be marked by the Beating Retreat Ceremony, to be held at Vijay Chowk on January 29, 2024
• It will witness all Indian tunes being played by bands of the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, and CAPFs.
• As part of the Beating Retreat Ceremony, an online competition will be held wherein people can sing or play Indian tunes, highlighting the patriotism and sacrifices of soldiers, and upload them on MyGov Portal. Top entries will be given rewards.

Chief Guest of the 75th Indian Republic Day 2024

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has been invited as the chief guest at India’s Republic Day Celebrations 2024. This is the 6th time that a French leader will be the chief guest on the Indian Republic Day.

My Dear Fellow Citizens,   Namaskar!

My heartiest greetings to all of you on the eve of the 75th Republic Day! My heart is filled with pride when I look back and see how far we have travelled despite adversities. The 75th year of the Republic is truly a historic milestone in the journey of the nation in many ways. This is an especially festive occasion, just as we celebrated the unique greatness and diverse culture of our nation during the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, when we completed 75 years of Independence.

Tomorrow is the day when we celebrate the commencement of the Constitution. Its Preamble begins with the words “We, the People of India”, highlighting the theme of the document, namely, democracy. In India, democratic system is much older than the concept of western democracy. That is the reason why India is called the “mother of democracy”.

After a long and difficult struggle, on 15th August, 1947, India became free from foreign rule. Yet, the task of framing the principles and processes that would govern the country and unleash its true potential was still a work in progress. The Constituent Assembly spent nearly three years holding detailed discussions on all aspects of governance and produced the great founding document of our nation, the Constitution of India. Today, the nation gratefully remembers the leaders as well as the officials who contributed to the framing of our splendid and inspiring Constitution.

The nation is in the early years of Amrit Kaal, the period leading to the centenary of Independence. This is the time of an epochal transformation. We are given a golden opportunity to take the country to new heights. Contribution from every citizen will be crucial to achieve our goals. For this, I will appeal to all my fellow citizens to abide by our Fundamental Duties enshrined in the Constitution. These duties are essential obligations of every citizen towards making Bharat a developed nation when it completes 100 years of independence. Here, I think of Mahatma Gandhi who had rightly said, “No people have risen who thought only of rights. Only those did so who thought of duties.”

My Dear Fellow Citizens,

Republic Day is an occasion to recall our foundational values and principles. When we contemplate any one of them, we are naturally guided to the rest. Democracy implies diversity of culture, beliefs and practices. Celebrating diversity implies equality, which is upheld by justice. Freedom is what makes it all possible. The totality of these values and principles is what makes us Indian. Guided by the sagacity of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the spirit of the Constitution, imbued with these foundational values and principles, has led us invariably on the path of social justice to put an end to all kinds of discrimination.

I would like to mention here that the celebration of the birth centenary of a tireless champion of social justice, Shri Karpoori Thakur Ji, concluded yesterday. Karpoori Ji was one of the greatest advocates of backward classes who dedicated his life for their welfare. His life was a message. I pay my tribute to Karpoori Ji for enriching public life through his contributions.

The ethos of our Republic brings together more than 1.4 billion of us to live as one family. For this largest family in the world, co-existence is not an imposition of geography but a source of happiness, which finds expression in our Republic Day celebrations.

Earlier this week, we witnessed the historic consecration ceremony of the idol of Prabhu Shri Ram in the glorious new temple constructed at His birthplace in Ayodhya. When this event will be seen in the wider perspective, the future historians will consider it a landmark in India’s continued re-discovery of its civilisational heritage. The construction of the temple commenced after the due judicial process and the decision of the highest court of the land. Now it stands as a grand edifice, giving a befitting expression not only of people’s faith but also as a testament to people’s enormous trust in judicial process.

Our National festivals are momentous occasions when we together look back and look ahead. If we look at the year since the last Republic Day, there is much to be pleased about. The successful organising of the Group of 20 Summit in the capital, under India’s presidency, was an unprecedented achievement. What was all the more noteworthy was the way the people were involved in the G20 events. The ideas and inputs travelled not downwards from the top but upwards from the bottom. The magnificent event provided lessons for all in making citizens participants in strategic and diplomatic matters that are, in the final analysis, going to shape their own future. The G20 Summit also boosted India’s emergence as the voice of the Global South, adding a necessary element to the international discourse.

We also progressed further towards the ideal of gender equality, when the Parliament passed the historic Women’s Reservation Bill. I believe the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam will prove to be a revolutionary tool of women’s empowerment. It will also go a long way in improving the processes of our governance. When more women will be involved in the matters of collective importance, our administrative priorities will be more in tune with the needs of the masses.

It was also the year when India went to the moon, becoming the first to land on the lunar south pole region. After Chandrayaan-3, the Indian Space Research Organisation rolled out a solar mission as well. Recently, Aditya L1 was successfully put into the halo orbit. We began the new year with the launch of our first X-ray Polarimeter Satellite called XPoSat which will study space mysteries like black holes. Many more space missions are planned in the current calendar year. I am happy to add that India’s space journey is slated to cross new milestones. Preparations for the Gaganyaan mission, our first human spaceflight programme, are proceeding smoothly. We have always been proud of our scientists and technology experts, but now they are aiming far higher than before and delivering too. India’s space programme is aimed at expanding and deepening the role of science and technology for the benefit of the entire humanity. The amount of enthusiasm we see in the country for the ISRO’s initiatives is heartening. New achievements in this area have fired the imagination of the young generation. More children, I am sure, will become interested in science and cultivate a scientific temper. It will also inspire more youngsters, especially young women, to pursue careers in science and technology.

India is moving ahead with confidence, which comes from and is also reflected by the robust health of the economy. Our GDP growth rate has remained the highest among major economies in recent years, and we have all reasons to believe that this extraordinary performance will continue in the year 2024 and beyond. What I find particularly noteworthy is that the same farsighted planning that fuels the economy has also given a push to the welfare drive to make the development inclusive in every sense of the term. The government had increased the scope of schemes to provide free food to the weaker sections of society during the pandemic days. These measures were later continued to extend a helping hand to the vulnerable population to come out of that crisis. Expanding the scope of that initiative, the government has decided to provide free food grains to over 81 crore people for five years. This may be the biggest welfare initiative of its kind in history.

Moreover, there have been a number of mission-mode schemes to increase the ease of living for all citizens. From the availability of safe and adequate drinking water at home to the security of having one’s own home, these are basic minimum requirements, not privileges. These matters are beyond any political or economic ideology and must be seen from a humanitarian perspective. The government has not only expanded and enhanced the welfare schemes, but it has also redefined the idea of welfare itself. It will be a proud day for us all when India becomes one of those few countries where homelessness is a rarity. Similarly, the National Education Policy gives adequate thrust to bridge the digital divide and create a uniform educational structure for the benefit of the underprivileged students. The expanding insurance cover of the Ayushman Bharat scheme aims to bring together all beneficiaries under its umbrella and provides a great reassurance to the poor and the vulnerable.

Our sportspersons have raised India’s profile on the international stage. In the Asian Games held last year, we made history with a record-breaking tally of 107 medals, and we won 111 medals in Asian Para Games. We are glad to see that women are making very impressive contribution to our medal tally. Our sports-stars have inspired children to take up diverse sports and games, helping them boost their self-confidence. I am sure that our sportspersons, who are infused with this new confidence, will deliver an improved performance in the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Dear Fellow Citizens,

In recent times, many conflicts have emerged around the world and several parts of it have been suffering from violence. When each of the two conflicting sides believes that it is right and the other is wrong, the way out should be found in the light of reason. Unfortunately, instead of reason, fears and prejudices have fueled passions, leading to relentless violence. There have been a series of humanitarian tragedies on a large scale, and we feel aggrieved over the human suffering. In such times, we recall Lord Buddha’s words:

न हि वेरेन वेरानि, सम्मन्तीध कुदाचनम्   अवेरेन च सम्मन्ति, एस धम्मो सनन्तनो

“Not at any time are enmities appeased here through enmity but they are appeased through non-enmity. This is the eternal law.”

From Vardhaman Mahavir and Samrat Ashok to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, India has time and again shown that non-violence is not just an ideal that may be difficult to achieve but it is a distinct possibility – in fact, it is a lived reality for many. Let us hope that the regions embroiled in conflicts will find a peaceful way to resolve conflicts and bring about peace.

India’s ancient wisdom can also help the world find a way out of the global environmental crisis. I am glad to see India at the forefront of promoting renewable sources of energy and taking a leadership position in global climate action. India has launched the ‘LiFE Movement’ for adoption of environment-conscious lifestyle. The global community has appreciated our country’s emphasis on individual behaviour-change for dealing with the issues of climate change. People everywhere can and must contribute by bringing their lifestyle in tune with Mother Nature. That will not only help save the planet for the generations to come but will also enhance the quality of life.

The period of Amrit Kaal is also going to be the period of unprecedented technological changes. Technological advances like Artificial Intelligence and machine learning have moved from headlines into our daily lives at a breathtaking speed. There are numerous areas of concern in the foreseeable future, but there are also exciting opportunities ahead, especially for the youth. They are exploring new frontiers. We need to do all we can to remove hurdles from their path and let them unleash their full potential. What they want is equality of opportunity. What they want is not the same old rhetoric of equality, but the realisation of our cherished ideal of equality.

It is, after all, their confidence that is building the India of tomorrow. Moreover, the mind of the youth is shaped by teachers, who are the real architects of the nation’s future. I would also like to make a thankful mention of our farmers and labourers who toil silently and make a mighty contribution to creating a better future for the nation. On the eve of this auspicious occasion, India also gratefully salutes the members of our Armed Forces, Police and Para-military Forces, without whose valour and vigil we would not have scaled the great heights we have.

Before I conclude, let me offer my greetings to the members of the judiciary and civil services. My Republic Day greetings to the officials of India’s missions abroad and the diaspora community! Let us all dedicate ourselves to serve the nation and fellow citizens in every way we can. My best wishes to all of you in this endeavour.

REPUBLIC DAY The Republic Day of India commemorates the date on which the Constitution of India came into force replacing the Government of India Act 1935 as the governing document of India on 26 January 1950.

CELEBRATIONS GALORE Republic Day is celebrated every year with much enthusiasm all over the country and to mark the importance of this occasion, a grand parade is held in the capital, New Delhi, from Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's House), along the Rajpath, past India Gate and on to the historic Red Fort.

The event begins with the Prime Minister of India laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, commemorating all the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. Soon, a 21 gun salute is presented. The President unfurls the National Flag and the National Anthem is played. This marks the beginning of the parade.

The President is accompanied by a notable foreign Head of State - who is the invited Chief Guest at the celebration. The Parade begins with winners of gallantry awards passing the President in open jeeps. President of India, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the INDIAN ARMED FORCES, takes the salute at the grand parade. The Indian Military also showcases its latest acquisitions such as tanks, missiles, radars, etc.

After this, helicopters from the armed forces fly past the parade area showering rose petals on the audience.The military parade is followed by a colourful cultural parade. India's rich cultural heritage is depicted in the form of tableaus from various states. Each state depicts its unique festivals, historical locations and art. This exhibition of diversity and richness of the culture of India lends a festive air to the occasion.

Tableaus from various government department and ministries of India are also presented displaying their contribution towards the progress of the nation. The most cheered section of the parade is when the children who have won NATIONAL BRAVERY AWARDS ride past the dais on elephants. School-children from all over the country also participate in the parade showcasing folk dances and singing to the tunes of patriotic songs.

The parade also includes displays of skilful motor-cycle rides, by the Armed Forces personnel. The most eagerly awaited part of the parade is the fly past, put on by the Indian Air Force. The fly past marks the conclusion of the parade, when fighter planes of the IAF roar past the dais, symbolically saluting the President.Celebrations, though on a relatively smaller scale, are also held in all state capitals, where the Governor of the state unfurls the Tricolour. Similar celebrations are also held at district headquarters, sub divisions, talukas and panchayats.

PM RALLY The Republic Day celebration is a three day extravaganza and post this celebration at India Gate, on the 27th January, a Prime Minister's Rally is held by a crème of N.C.C cadets displaying various breath-taking performances and drills.

LOK TARANGThe Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in association with seven Zonal Cultural Centres organise LOK TARANG - National Folk Dance Festival every year from 24th to 29th January. This festival provides a unique opportunity for people to witness colourful, vibrant and authentic folk dances drawn from various parts of the country.

BEATING THE RETREAT Beating The Retreat officially denotes the end of Republic Day festivities. It is conducted on the evening of January 29, the third day after the Republic Day. The ceremony starts by the massed bands of the three services marching in unison, playing popular marching tunes. The drummers also give a solo performance (known as the Drummer's Call). They also play ABIDE WITH ME (which is said to be GandhiJi's favourite). The chimes made by the tubular bells, placed quite at a distance, create a mesmerising ambience. At exactly 6 pm, the buglers sound the retreat and the National Flag is lowered, and the National Anthem is sung, bringing the Republic Day celebrations to a formal end.

All important Government Buildings are beautifully decorated with lights every evening from 26th to 29th.
