A theme song , also known as a signature tune, is a piece of music specifically written and composed to introduce and represent a film, television show, radio program, video game, or personal brand. Its primary purpose is to convey the general mood, tone, or theme of the content it precedes. It often serves as a musical summary, encapsulating the core spirit and emotion of what follows.

The melody is arguably the most crucial part of a theme. It's the tune that listeners remember and associate with the content. A good melody is catchy, memorable, and creates an immediate emotional response in the listener. 

For example, the short and modern theme song of the TV show Stranger Things instantly captivates with its haunting synth melody.

It should be simple enough to be easily recognizable, yet distinctive enough to stand out from other themes.

Analyzing a Song – So Simple Every Student Can Do It

English teachers, teaching your students how to analyze song lyrics needs to be a “go-to” strategy, a step toward deeper analysis of more complex texts .

Whether you’re teaching poetry, persuasive essays, or some other writing unit, analyzing song lyrics will give your students an opportunity to look at the different ways that language can be used to capture emotions and tell stories .

This close reading process will also help improve their vocabulary and grammar skills while they are having fun!

Here are some tips on how to teach students to analyze song lyrics so that they can gain valuable writing knowledge through a familiar medium they love!

Analysis of Song Lyrics

Taylor Swift makes analyzing song lyrics in the classroom easy peasy. Like her or not, you can count on her to write songs that tell a story, are layered in deep meaning, and littered with Easter eggs that are fun to try and collect (even for the non-Swifties). 

Taylor Swift’s “ Anti Hero” is a fun student-friendly song to bring into the classroom to practice analysis skills.

With callbacks to songs on other albums in lines like “I have this thing where I get older but just never wiser,” you can challenge students to analyze the development of a theme across multiple texts (helloooo higher level DOK and those really tricky to meet standards!).

Lyrics like “I’m the problem; it’s me” coupled with the title setup an opportunity to teach the concept of anti-hero (I especially like the idea of teaching about anti-heroes after teaching about the hero’s journey) and challenging students to analyze how Swift herself could be seen as this archetype by analyzing other songs and conducting online research.

“Anti Hero” also has what appear to be two references to pop culture ( 30 Rock and Knives Out ) that had even the swiftest of Swifties stumped online. These references are an accessible way to introduce the idea of allegory. 

Taylor has really teed up the song analysis practice in English classrooms to be endless with so many rabbit holes to go down at every turn! 

Song Meaning “Hallelujah”

Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” has a deep meaning making it a popular choice for teaching song analysis.  The meaning of Hallelujah is about someone who was deeply in love and is mourning the guilt of the loss of that love .

The song can teach students how to analyze lyrics by pointing out that even though it doesn’t say so explicitly, this is a song about a break-up .

They can also learn other aspects of reading literature, like examining tone and form. Analyzing song lyrics enables students to apply what they’ve learned as they read other texts or songs.

After reading a poem or listening to a song’s lyrics, students should be able to answer questions like: 

• Who is speaking? 
• How do you know? 
• What do you think the speaker’s feelings are?
•  What does this tell you about their personality? 
• Do these feelings make sense for the situation?

Good Songs to Analyze

When choosing good songs to analyze remember these three things:

• Choose a song that tells a story
• A song with a deep meaning or theme that challenges students’ inferential thinking skills works best
• Pick songs that students will know and be excited to listen to (that means that while “We Didn’t Start the Fire” is technically a great song for analysis, it might not be the most engaging for your students)

Here are some songs for teaching song analysis that will not only help you teach important analysis skills but also engage and delight your students:

• “ Pray for Me ” by the Weeknd ft. Kendrick Lamar
• “ Thunder ” by Imagine Dragons 
• “ Bohemian Rhapsody ” by Queen (this one is suitable for older students)
• “ Born This Way ” by Lady Gaga
• “ Getting Older ” by Billie Eilish 
• “ Drivers License ” by Olivia Rodrigo 
• “ This is America ” by Childish Gambino/Donald Glover
• “ Matilda ” by Harry Styles
• “ Victoria’s Secret ” by Jax (does have some profanity – I’ve linked the “clean” version)
• “ Vacation ” by The Dirty Heads (does say “shit”)

How to Analyze a Song

Teaching students how to analyze a song is similar to teaching poetry or literary analysis, but using songs disguises the learning as a fun activity making it really engaging and accessible for all learners.

Start by having students listen to their song twice .

• Instruct them to listen through for the first time just for enjoyment and to follow along with the printed lyrics (or digital if you have a way for students to access the lyrics online).
• Then have them listen a second time but this time have them highlight and circle words and phrases that they think are important and interesting. 

Challenge students to consider the following questions during their second time listening and to annotate the lyrics as they go:

• Who’s telling the story? What’s their perspective? How do they feel? What’s making them feel that way?
• What’s the mood of the song? Do the lyrics or the music contribute more to the mood?
• What figurative language do you notice in the lyrics? Why might the songwriter have chosen to include that figurative language?
• What could the songwriter be saying about human nature or society through their lyrics? How could you write a theme statement about these lyrics?

Once you’ve gotten your students started with the analysis process, make sure to involve your students. Ask them what they notice and use their insights to build discussion. Have them write a summary of the song or write a detailed analysis or work on a more creative, visual response.

Thinking through these ideas with easily-accessible texts makes transferring their skills and knowledge to literature (ya know, the kind with the capital L ) easier.

They’ll have practice analyzing craft moves like figurative language and allegory, but they’ll also have practice with those more complex reading strategies like making inferences and connections .

Olympic opening ceremony drag performance resembling Last Supper rankles conservatives

PARIS — The extravagant opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics has caused fury among the populist and religious right in the United States and elsewhere, with critics especially unhappy about an apparent depiction of the Last Supper featuring drag performers.

A fashion show at the ceremony included a scene that resembled a modern re-creation of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting, French actor and singer Philippe Katerine appeared as the Greek god Dionysus, painted blue and wearing little more than a bunch of flowers covering his modesty.

While some fans loved this unabashed display of French camp and kitsch, others — particularly those who espouse conservative or Christian beliefs — were not happy with it.

“In this scene from the Olympic opening ceremony, the famous painting of The Last Supper is recreated, but Jesus is replaced with an obese woman, while queer and trans figures (including a child!) depict her apostles,” Jenna Ellis, former 2020 campaign attorney to Donald Trump, told her 1 million followers on X.

She described the ceremony as containing “overt pagan and satanic symbolism.”

The Last Supper refers to the final meal that Jesus Christ shared with his 12 apostles before he was crucified. It’s also a popular subject in Christian art, most famously depicted by da Vinci, who painted a scene that captured the apostles’ reaction to Jesus’ announcement of his betrayal.

Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the opening ceremony, defended the production when asked at a news conference Saturday about some of the backlash. Jolly said he was unaware of the criticism and wanted to display “inclusion.”

“When we want to include everyone and not exclude anyone, questions are raised,” he said at an International Olympic Committee media briefing.

“Our subject was not to be subversive. We never wanted to be subversive. We wanted to talk about diversity. Diversity means being together,” he continued. “We wanted to include everyone, as simple as that. In France, we have freedom of creation, artistic freedom. We are lucky in France to live in a free country. I didn’t have any specific messages that I wanted to deliver. In France, we are republic, we have the right to love whom we want, we have the right not to be worshippers, we have a lot of rights in France, and this is what I wanted to convey.”

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker called the depiction “crazy” in a post on Instagram and quoted the New Testament book Epistle to the Galatians, warning that “for what things a man shall sow, those also shall he reap.” Butker sparked accusations of sexism and homophobia over a commencement speech in May in which he told a class of college graduates that one of the “most important” titles a woman can hold is homemaker.

Bishop Emmanuel Gobillard, a spokesperson representing the Holy See for the 2024 Paris Olympics, told NBC News that the depiction of the Last Supper left him “deeply hurt.”

“The fact that our religion should be mocked is usual and we are used to blasphemy in France, but the context isn’t the same,” he said. “In an event that brings together all or part of the population, I found this staging hurtful and out of place.”

Far-right French politician Marion Marechal-Le Pen said in a post on X that the performance was “not France that is speaking but a left-wing minority ready for any provocation.”

Elon Musk responded to and amplified several memes decrying the “wokeness” of the event. And Kyle Becker, a former Fox News producer with more than half a million X followers, said the Games had “gone full Woke dystopian.”

This ignited debates, held in varying levels of good faith, on social media.

The British writer and broadcaster David Aaronovitch was among those to point out that the Last Supper has been “pastiched, parodied and altered tens of thousands of times” since da Vinci painted it in the 1490s.

Nonetheless, Bishop Robert Barron, of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester, in Minnesota, asked his 280,000 X followers: “Would they ever have dreamed of mocking in this gross, public way, a scene from the quran?” He responded that “we all know the answer.”

French freedom of expression has not been aimed solely at one religion, however. In 2015, gunmen killed 12 people to avenge controversial cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in an attack on the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. The publication even republished the controversial caricatures five years later to mark the start of the attackers’ trial.

This “deeply secular postmodern society knows who its enemy is, they are naming it, and we should believe them,” Barron said in a video message. “We Christians, we Catholics should not be sheepish. We should resist. We should make our voices heard.”

How to Present Lyric Sheets, Lead Sheets and Band Charts

Don’t get too excited. It’s time for post containing what I like to call Dadvice. You know what I’m talking about. Advice that’s mostly mundane but eminently practical. The kind of resent precisely because you know it’s worth bearing in mind.

Our subject is how you present your work. It’s no secret that the most important thing is doing quality work, but presentation is important too.

Imagine your bank writes to you in Comic Sans. Imagine your doctor turns up in sweatpants. Imagine that limo you hired arrives covered in a fine layer of dirt.

Presentation counts. It’s a stamp of quality. It’s a subtle way of showing what you value.

In songwriting well-presented work says ‘I’m proud of what I make’. It says ‘I want other people to engage with what I make’. It says ‘I’m a professional and value presenting myself well to other professionals’. Wholesome qualities pertaining to Dadvice of all kinds.

When you’re putting your work either before a professional who might be able to open doors for you or before musicians and singers who are going to perform and record it, it’s in everyone’s interest that they’re focusing on your work and not the way you’ve presented it. And that’s what good presentation does: it’s done so well you don’t notice it. You feel that mark of quality. In fact, when I coach a new writer, 90% of the time I can tell almost instantly what stage they’re working at from a quick glance at how their work is presented on the page. Professional work goes hand in hand with professional presentation.

It’s especially important for getting your work performed. Time is always tight in rehearsal or in the studio. The more attention your performers have to give to working out what you mean by all the assorted squiggles and improvised repeat marks on the page, the less attention they’ll give to nailing your work. Spending the extra time investing in clear presentation always pays off later.

Good presentation is all about clarity, and clear presentation comes down to three things: it’s simple, accurate and clean.

Simple because the less complicated something is the easier it is to understand. Accurate because any mistakes on the page mean mistakes in performance or time wasted in rehearsal. Clean because because until we evolve beyond needing to read information from a screen or page, anything that’s a distraction to the eye is a distraction from understanding what the writer is trying to say.

Different genres use different conventions for notating lyric sheets, chord sheets, lead sheets and/or instrumental parts. But they all come back to the same principle – clarity – and sub-principles – simplicity, accuracy, and I guess the noun would be cleanliness. So you’re at liberty to find your own house style that suits your genre: the best way to achieve this is to get your hands on pro versions of what you’re trying to create (not published versions – they have their own conventions) and adopt whatever presentational choices work for you.

Ok. Let’s turn our amps up to eleven with some practical Dadvice tips.

Lyric Sheets

Just plain ol’ words. No notes, chords or other distractions. If you’re working from these copies in the rehearsal room or recording studio, presumably you’ve sent your singer a demo recording already.

• Let’s work with the assumption your lyric sheets will be typed. Handwritten drafts are great for album artwork, but in performance clarity is key.
• Fancy fonts are nice, but simple, clear fonts are practical. Times, Arial, Georgia never fail.
• Some people capitalize all of the lyrics, some people just use normal capitalization. I don’t recommend the practice of capitalizing only the hook: the singer doesn’t really need to know it’s the hook and it looks weird. It’s like when my Grandma writes text messages in capitals and it sounds like she’s shouting.
• I recommend including the section names (Chorus, Verse, Bridge) either in a column to the left or above each section. You don’t have to go into immaculate detail about what each section means, but a few clues will help your singer understand the song’s shape and help out when you say ‘Let’s take it from the Bridge’.
• Punctuation can be tricky in lyrics – in a poem you can use punctuation to make your meaning clear, but no one can hear punctuation when words are sung. So it’s always worth keeping it simple. Basic punctuation on your lyric sheet will help the singer understand what he or she is singing.
• Important things like the title, writer credit and copyright notice are worth including, as well as mundane things like the title and page number in the header on every page.
• Tedious as it might seem, I recommend writing out every section every time it comes back – having your singer dart backwards and forwards because you wrote REPEAT PRE-CHORUS then CHORUS can be distracting. The extra paper you use is more than made up for by ease of performance.

Chord Sheets

Just chords, mapped out measures and maybe a stylistic instruction. For when you’re working with players who know how to groove.

• Again, let’s work with the assumption your Chord Sheets will be typed in a simple, plain font. It can be easier to do this stuff handwritten, but printed is almost always clearer and all it takes is some wizardry with the Tab key in Microsoft Word.
• Decent players can realize whatever you write just from chords and how long each chord lasts. It’s definitely worth giving some structural signposts – the Chorus groove is likely to be different from the Verse groove. It can also be helpful to give some little lyric clues at new sections – not because decent players need them, but because if rehearsal time is tight as a performer those little reassurances that you’re in the right place can mean a lot.
• Evenly spaced measures will help your performers understand what’s going on. The standard is to put four or eight measures per line and have a blank line between sections. If there are multiple chords per measure, it’s worth spacing the chords out proportionally (i.e. do they change on the second, third, fourth beat?).
• As well as including a title, credit, copyright notice etc on the first page, it’s essential to say a few words about the tempo, time signature/meter and style of the song. It doesn’t need an essay, but the more specific you are the less general a groove you’ll get. Obviously if you have a specific groove you can demonstrate in the room you can do that too.
• Again, I’d recommend writing out repeating sections (like the chorus) once for every time they’re played. You performers might need to vary what they play slightly when sections come back and you’ll make it easier for them to make notes and keep tabs of this.

Lead Sheets

Everything in one place: melody, chords and lyrics. Not always necessary for all performers, but definitely the most comprehensive and useful way to notate your song if you can. The melodic contour is useful even for singers who don’t read notation. Everyone gets a copy of the same thing which makes rehearsal so much more straightforward.

• All the usual things still apply: typeset (Sibelius and Finale are the industry standard), clear titles, credits, copyright notice and page number and title on every page.
• It’s common wherever possible to put four measures per line, because at least in most popular music 4-bar lines or phrases are most common.
• It’s definitely worth including section titles, because they serve as awesomely convenient rehearsal marks. It’s conventional to use double bar lines at the end of each section.
• Some people object to including measure numbers, but they can’t hurt. Often they’re included on every measure (saves counting back from the start of the line) and they might need to go under each measure and left aligned to avoid clashing with chord symbols.
• Chord symbols are essential. Fret diagrams aren’t generally necessary, unless you’re a guitarist and have very specific suggestions for chord voicing.
• There’s something of an art to splitting up multi-syllable words under two or more notes. What’s important is that you’re consistent in your policy. Generally I split words on the hard consonant or new vowel which starts the next syllable. Sounds more complicated than it is: dir-ty, lit-tle, na-ive, con-so-nant, split-ters. But when a word is made of individual parts that are words in themselves, I usually override this rule if it means not splitting up the root word: cheat-ing, truck-er, re-mark-a-ble.
• I recommend adding a slur on melismas (more than one note per syllable) as it serves as an extra visual reminder as to what’s going on.
• It’s possible to specify on your lead sheet which instruments play where, and what you’d like them to play, if you’re able to be specific about it. The Italian word tacet is usually used to mean don’t play. Details are usually included above each section, sometimes in a box. You can also use ‘+’ and ‘-‘ to indicate where you want instruments to enter and drop out.

Instrumental Parts

For when you really want to be specific about what your players do.

• Virtually everything that applies to Lead Sheets applies here too. Measure numbers or at least clear section headers are all the more important for rehearsal because everyone’s part will look different. You’ll also want to include the part name on each part: if you drop a big pile of unbound parts you don’t want to spend forever working out what goes where.
• It’s not uncommon for instrumental parts to vary between being really specific and offering more general instructions. Guitar parts might have riffs notated, or might just have chord symbols over blank measures.
• Page turns are worth thinking about: most players need a few seconds to turn. If the part is on three pages it’s possible to tape them all together. Otherwise it’s worth laying the parts out so they can turn quickly: it’s better to have two staves of music on a page because it makes a turn possible, rather than cram everything together to save space and have your players drop out for eight bars because they have to turn.
• If you’re using parts in for recording, it’s worth binding with masking tape over staples or binders or anything else. You can stick the pages together in a concertina and it’ll make turning quietly much easier to do.

So there we go. Some thoughts on making your work shine. Ultimately, it’s up to you to find your house style and figure out how you can present your work at its clearest. Once it’s become a habit you won’t even need to think about it. And after you’ve spent all that time crafting great material, it’s the least you and songs deserve.

With an ambitious and unique opening ceremony , the 2024 Paris Olympics got under way when thousands of Olympians, including Team USA athletes , cruised along the Seine River on Friday night.

The city’s iconic landmarks provided a stunning backdrop for the parade of nations. Athletes from around the world, including Team USA flag bearers LeBron James and Coco Gauff , floated on boats for the six-kilometer route that traveled east to west across Paris from the Pont d’Austerlitz to the Trocadero.

Who lit the Olympic Cauldron?

The Olympic Cauldron was lit by Teddy Riner, a three-time Olympic champion in judo, and Marie-Jose Perec, a three-time Olympic champion in track and field.

Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams carried Olympic torch

In an Olympics opening ceremony surprise, Rafael Nadal carried the Olympic torch once it reached the Eiffel Tower. Nadal might as well have honorary French residency after winning a record 14 French Opens. He won four in a row from 2005-2008, five in a row from 2010-2014, another four in a row from 2017-2020 and his final one in 2022. He is 112-4 all-time at Roland Garros. A statue of him was erected outside the stadium in 2021. Nadal has 22 Grand Slams total.

The tennis theme in the Olympic torch relay continued when Amelie Mauresmo, the only French player to be No. 1 in the Open era, took the torch after it arrived off the boat. Tony Parker, who paved the way for French players in the NBA and won four titles with the San Antonio Spurs, took the handoff from Mauresmo. Team USA's LeBron James, Coco Gauff not slowed by rain

The rain wasn’t spoiling the party for LeBron James, Coco Gauff and the rest of the U.S. Olympic team.

“Representing the red, white and blue, there’s no better time,” James said during an interview with NBC’s Maria Taylor during the parade of nations. “We’re here for the USA and ready to go out and compete at a high level.”

The NBA superstar and the Grand Slam champion were selected as flagbearers by the rest of the U.S. team. Flagbearers held their country’s flags aloft as the team boats floated down the Seine while other athletes waved smaller flags. But Gauff and James also took time to pose for photos with others on the boat – including the captain – and take in the sights of Paris.

“Seeing a lot of water, first off,” Gauff said. “But also some amazing people, a lot of amazing athletes and we’re all excited to represent Team USA.”

Asked if the steady rain put a damper on their special moment, James said no.

Axelle Saint-Cirel performs French national anthem on Grand Palais roof

On the roof of the Grand-Palais and wearing colors of the French flag, Axelle Saint-Cirel, the Choeur and the Maîtrise de Radio France performed the French national anthem, called The Marseillaise. It was composed in 1792 by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle, who was an officer for the French Engineers. It was declared the national anthem in 1795. As the national anthem was performed, the Republic Guard raised the flag at the Trocadéro. Composer Victor le Masne musically rearranged the national anthem for the opening ceremony.

What country has the most athletes in the Olympics?

There are 10,714 athletes from 206 different countries scheduled to take part in this year's Olympic Games. The United States  will have the largest national delegation at the Summer Games in Paris with 593 athletes. Host nation France is second with 573, followed by Australia (460), Germany (427), Japan (404), Italy (403), China (388), Spain (382), Great Britain (327) and Canada (318) rounding out the top 10.

Once again, Russia is technically banned from appearing at the Olympic Games . Yet once again, Russian athletes will compete under a different name − a handful of them, at least.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics , which begin this week, 15 athletes from Russia − and 18 from neighboring Belarus − are slated to compete as "Individual Neutral Athletes," or AINs for short, according to the most recent statistics released by the International Olympic Committee on Saturday . The AIN classification means that Russian and Belarusian flags, national anthems and uniforms will be absent from the Paris Games. Rachael Raskovich, Amanda Mason-Sekula and Kelly Holmes arrived at the opening ceremony wearing American flag themed hats, red white and blue glasses and sequin USA jackets with "Proud American" stitched on the back.

The trio of friends met in law school and said they will spend the next week or so hopping around to events around the city. Doris Ng of Chicago was among the U.S. spectators who were still searching for a good spot from which to view the ceremony in the hour before it began.

"We thought we were going to be on time," she said. "I think everybody else beat us to the punch already."

Not every local was in a festive mood

One man saw my media credential and wanted to make sure — despite barely speaking English — that he was upset over a rumor Celine Dion had been paid 2 million Euros to perform one song at the opening ceremony. Another woman, an American who has lived in Paris for 15 years, said property taxes went up and yet Parisians were not given much access to events or even public spaces to watch the festivities despite the financial and social burden being put on them.

But even when the rain began falling, people did not scatter to look for shelter. Instead they powered through, trying to get a better look at the bleu, blanc and rouge streaks being left in the sky by an airplane flyover.

Restaurants, which don’t have televisions here, were generally not busy. If you were going out to eat Friday night, it’s because you didn’t care to watch the show live. But inside one of them in a residential area near the Eiffel Tower, you could hear the singing of La Marseillaise, the French National Anthem. Team USA opening ceremony outfit

Team USA’s opening ceremony outfit is a modern take on a tailored look. On top, a tailored single-breasted wool blazer with red and white tipping is worn over a striped oxford shirt. The bottom is a more casual tapered jean and classic suede buck shoe fit. 

Ralph Lauren works closely with Team USA and the goal, as always, is to “do something graphic and uniquely American,” chief brand and innovation officer David Lauren said.

Coco Gauff opens up on being U.S. flag bearer, making Olympic debut

Coco Gauff is making her Olympic debut in Paris and she is one of two U.S. flag bearers . “(Competing) in the  Olympics  has always been up there with winning a Grand Slam, like top goals,” Gauff told USA TODAY Sports this summer.  Read our full feature on Gauff .

On the opening ceremony red carpet, Serena Williams was asked about Gauff being the flag bearer. "Isn't that great. I'm so excited to see her tonight. I'm just so happy for her," the tennis legend said.

Paris 2024 Olympics: Celine Dion’s comeback brings new emotion to real-life, tragic love between an athlete and France’s most famous singer

“If the sky should fall into the sea, and the stars fade all around me …” so begins France’s most famous song about love: “L’hymne à l’amour.”

On the night of the Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games , the sky was stormy with rain clouds, the River Seine replaced the sea and any possible stars were overshadowed by the glittering Eiffel Tower, yet Edith Piaf ’s timeless tribute to a lost love sounded just as poignant as the first time it was heard more than half a century ago.

Standing on the balcony of the Eiffel Tower, the Olympic rings affixed to its iron sides, world-renowned singer Celine Dion serenaded more than 300,000 spectators, including an estimated 6,800 athletes, in an emotional comeback from illness .

Her powerful performance marked the first time that Dion has sung live since she was diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome in 2022 . The rare neurological disease causes muscle spams and rigidity in the torso and limbs. Most devastating for Dion, the disease has also made it hard for the Canadian singer to control her vocal cords.

Seventy-five years before Dion's appearance at Paris 2024, another legendary singer, Piaf, performed the cult song for the first time, the same raw emotion in her voice.

The French icon composed the lyrics to “L’hymne à l’amour" in a house she shared with French-Algerian professional boxer and world middleweight champion Marcel Cerdan as a tribute to their love.

The singer and athlete met in New York in 1948 during Piaf's tour of the United States. Love at first sight quickly became a whirlwind affair.

That love story met a shattering end on 28 October 1949 when Cerdan’s plane crashed in the mid-Atlantic. The 33-year-old boxer was on his way to North America to meet Piaf at her request.

Her lover's fatal accident sent Piaf into a downward spiral of grief and guilt, which she tried to smother with morphine and alcohol. She never recovered from it and died a few days before the 14th anniversary of Cerdan’s death, in 1963.

Three-quarters of a century on, five kilometres from the house where Piaf wrote her love hymn 's tragically prophetic lyrics, they rang out from the balcony of the Eiffel Tower as a timeless tribute to the City of Love and the passion for life.

And as the song's last notes brought the Opening Ceremony of Paris 2024 to a close, the banks of the River Seine — witnesses to many real-life love stories — erupted in cheers.

‘Firework’ by Katy Perry: Meaning and Analysis

‘Firework’ is one of Katy Perry’s best-known songs, and its lyrics were inspired by a classic work of literature, so we thought we’d consider Katy Perry’s song from a broadly ‘literary’ perspective. What is the meaning of the song’s lyrics? And which literary classic influenced the writing of those lyrics?

‘Firework’: song meaning

The song’s meaning can perhaps best be summarised as follows: it’s am inspirational song addressed to anyone and everyone who has ever felt fragile and insignificant. Perry encourages these people to discover (or re discover) that ‘spark’ within themselves which is their true spirit or essence, the thing which will bring them alive and show the world what they are capable of.

The song’s opening verse contains some powerful imagery, although it’s a risky strategy for any song to open by comparing someone to a plastic bag (other than in jest). Whether this image was inspired by a scene in American Beauty or not, it does nevertheless convey the idea of someone who feels themselves to be both worthless and aimless, drifting or floating along, passively letting the elements dictate their direction for them.

The image of being ‘buried deep’ is a clever image which hints at the idea of being both overlooked and overwhelmed by life, and this phrase nicely epitomises the song’s meaning as a whole.

But the song is much darker than this. Being already buried deep suggests being dead already: they are alive, but only in name. They feel dead. Indeed, the idea of being ‘six feet under screams’ reinforces the idea of being buried alive, given the connotations of being ‘six feet under’.

The song’s bridge provides the way out for such people who are living-yet-dead (or dead-yet-living). They just need to find that mysterious spark within themselves and set light to it, and they will explode into life again like a beautiful firework being set off on Independence Day. (Indeed, Perry’s choice of the Fourth of July even summons the idea of relocating one’s independence when one finds that inner spark.)

The chorus doesn’t necessarily add much to the song’s meaning, at least in terms of its lyric content. However, the crescendo that the song reaches at this point obviously reinforces the explosive quality of this new-found energy and creative expression.

The song’s second verse reinforces the meaning of the first, emphasising everyone’s originality and irreplaceability. Perry also reassures her (generic) addressee that after a storm comes a beautiful rainbow, with the colourful sky-covered image visually echoing that of the firework exploding into its many colours.

‘Firework’: analysis

Katy Perry’s song is fundamentally a paean to self-empowerment. Written by Perry herself along with Ester Dean and the song’s producers, Stargate and Sandy Vee (the latter of whom is perhaps best-known for co-producing Rihanna’s ‘ Only Girl (In the World) ’), the song can be categorised as an anthem.

The song’s lyrics may not be especially complex, and the sentiment they express is familiar and well-trodden ground. Such inspirational anthems are ten-a-penny, although ‘Firework’ is a catchy number. Perhaps the song’s greatest asset, then, is its memorable – and highly visualisable – central image of a person unleashing their full potential being likened to a firework exploding high in the sky.

But where did this image come from? Was it (aptly enough) inspiration, which simply came to Perry and her fellow songwriters from the ether, a la the Romantics?

Well, not quite. For what is less well-known is that ‘Firework’ was partly inspired by Jack Kerouac’s novel On the Road . Kerouac’s book is about freedom over conformity, with the novel’s free-spirited characters rebelling against the clocklike regularity of the workaday world by taking a series of trips across the United States. So the meaning of Perry’s ‘Firework’ and the central ‘thrust’ of On the Road are not that different from each other.

The song’s bridge and chorus, with their talk of igniting the light until everyone goes ‘Oh, oh, oh’ (clearly having been rendered speechless by such a pyrotechnic display of self-affirmation), can be compared with a passage in Kerouac’s book.

In his 1957 novel, Kerouac talks of ‘the mad ones’ who ‘burn, burn, burn’ like yellow roman candles (in other words, like fireworks). For Kerouac, such people explode ‘like spiders across the stars’, and when everybody sees such an eruption they respond by going, ‘Awww’.

It’s likely that Perry’s husband at the time of ‘Firework’ (which was released on her 2010 album Teenage Dream ) helped to inspire the Kerouac allusion. Russell Brand is a fan of Kerouac’s work and it’s probable that Katy Perry was either paying indirect tribute to Brand through her allusion to On the Road , or even that Brand introduced Perry to this passage from the novel.
