Professionalism and Work Ethic refers to a cluster of traits that people use to describe a person’s character and behavior.

Professionalism and Work Ethic are obviously tied to success in the workplace. They also play leading roles in our personal lives and sports. In the psychological literature, Professionalism and Work Ethic are associated with the personality construct called Conscientiousness , a cluster of traits related to competence, order, dutifulness, achievement striving, self-discipline, and deliberation.

Standards of Professionalism and Work Ethic are constantly evolving as a result of changes in society, globalization, and technology. For instance, in the U.S. there has been a general move toward more informal attire in business settings. Now it’s common place for a business to allow for casual dress unless you are seeing clients regularly.

Yet there are a few behaviors that are persistently tied to success in the workplace. Promptness is a big one. Employers expect you to show up on time. And of course they expect you to have good hygiene, to listen, and to be respectful to colleagues. Employers also value people who assume responsibility, people who do what it takes to get the task completed. 

Having a strong work ethic–in personality life, sports, and work settings–doesn’t necessarily equate with incessant hard work. While every culture needs worker bees, ideally Worth Ethic involves more than effort, dedication, and a focus on hard work. Rather, a sound work ethic invokes worker smarter and not necessarily harder.

Professionalism & Work Ethic in the Work Place

Not surprisingly, perhaps, intrapersonal competencies, which employers often call “soft skills,” are crucial to professional success in work contexts.

Each year, NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) conducts a survey of its members to explore what prospective employers are looking for from recent college graduates. In its annual survey of the most prized workforce readiness competencies, NACE found U.S. employers rank Professionalism/Work Ethic as the third most important workforce competency (after Critical Thinking and Collaboration) for years 2015 through 2018.

The sample essay from a pharmacy student was written during the student’s sophomore year and before she had experience in the field. Therefore, she chose to highlight her attitude towards and seriousness about her future path of study.  She also discusses pre-pharmacy courses she has already completed and stresses her academic success.

Law School Student Sample

The student applying to law school to study environmental law immediately persuades readers of his commitment by telling a personal story of how environmental law affected his family business. He also traces his educational path from community college to a bachelor’s program, where he completed a technical senior thesis with ties to a government agency. With law schools just as interested in recruiting students with a diverse background and life experience as they are with seeking pre-law majors, this student builds a strong case for himself as a candidate in just one page.

Business School Student Sample

The two business application essays, written by the same applicant, are in response to questions posed by an MBA program, which is especially interested in how candidates take risks and overcome challenges. There are two main things to keep in mind when working on your essay structure: making sure to include the right information in each part, and deciding how you’ll organize the information within the body.

Parts of an essay

The three parts that make up all essays are described in the table below.

Order of information

You’ll also have to consider how to present information within the body. There are a few general principles that can guide you here.

The first is that your argument should move from the simplest claim to the most complex . The body of a good argumentative essay often begins with simple and widely accepted claims, and then moves towards more complex and contentious ones.

For example, you might begin by describing a generally accepted philosophical concept, and then apply it to a new topic. The grounding in the general concept will allow the reader to understand your unique application of it.

The second principle is that background information should appear towards the beginning of your essay . General background is presented in the introduction. If you have additional background to present, this information will usually come at the start of the body.

The third principle is that everything in your essay should be relevant to the thesis . Ask yourself whether each piece of information advances your argument or provides necessary background. And make sure that the text clearly expresses each piece of information’s relevance.

The sections below present several organizational templates for essays: the chronological approach, the compare-and-contrast approach, and the problems-methods-solutions approach.

The chronological approach (sometimes called the cause-and-effect approach) is probably the simplest way to structure an essay. It just means discussing events in the order in which they occurred, discussing how they are related (i.e. the cause and effect involved) as you go.

A chronological approach can be useful when your essay is about a series of events. Don’t rule out other approaches, though—even when the chronological approach is the obvious one, you might be able to bring out more with a different structure.

Essays with two or more main subjects are often structured around comparing and contrasting . For example, a literary analysis essay might compare two different texts, and an argumentative essay might compare the strengths of different arguments.

There are two main ways of structuring a compare-and-contrast essay: the alternating method, and the block method.

Alternating

In the alternating method, each paragraph compares your subjects in terms of a specific point of comparison. These points of comparison are therefore what defines each paragraph.

  • Distance learning: Greater ability to reach out to teacher privately
  • Sum up, emphasize that distance learning introduces more difficulties than it solves
  • Stress the importance of addressing issues with distance learning as it becomes increasingly common
  • Distance learning may prove to be the future, but it still has a long way to go

In the block method, each subject is covered all in one go, potentially across multiple paragraphs. For example, you might write two paragraphs about your first subject and then two about your second subject, making comparisons back to the first.

  • Advantages: Ease of picking up on signs a student is struggling, more personal interaction among students
  • Disadvantages: May be harder for students to approach teacher privately in person to raise issues

An essay that concerns a specific problem (practical or theoretical) may be structured according to the problems-methods-solutions approach.

This is just what it sounds like: You define the problem, characterize a method or theory that may solve it, and finally analyze the problem, using this method or theory to arrive at a solution. If the problem is theoretical, the solution might be the analysis you present in the essay itself; otherwise, you might just present a proposed solution.

The essay overview

In longer essays whose body is split into multiple named sections, the introduction often ends with an overview of the rest of the essay. This gives a brief description of the main idea or argument of each section.

The overview allows the reader to immediately understand what will be covered in the essay and in what order. Though it describes what  comes later in the text, it is generally written in the present tense . The following example is from a literary analysis essay on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein .

Transitions

Transition words and phrases are used throughout all good essays to link together different ideas. They help guide the reader through your text, and an essay that uses them effectively will be much easier to follow.

Various different relationships can be expressed by transition words, as shown in this example.

Because Hitler failed to respond to the British ultimatum, France and the UK declared war on Germany. Although it was an outcome the Allies had hoped to avoid, they were prepared to back up their ultimatum in order to combat the existential threat posed by the Third Reich.

Transition sentences may be included to transition between different paragraphs or sections of an essay. A good transition sentence moves the reader on to the next topic while indicating how it relates to the previous one.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The way you structure your essay is crucial to presenting your argument coherently. A well-structured essay helps your reader follow the logic of your ideas and understand your overall point.

Comparisons in essays are generally structured in one of two ways:

  • The alternating method, where you compare your subjects side by side according to one specific aspect at a time.
  • The block method, where you cover each subject separately in its entirety.

It’s also possible to combine both methods, for example by writing a full paragraph on each of your topics and then a final paragraph contrasting the two according to a specific metric.

You should try to follow your outline as you write your essay . However, if your ideas change or it becomes clear that your structure could be better, it’s okay to depart from your essay outline . Just make sure you know why you’re doing so.

Re “ How ‘Professionalism’ in the Medical World Can Be a Minefield ” (Science Times, March 19):

Doctors and nurses have answered a calling to care — specifically, in healing the sick. They don’t think about whether their off-duty attire meets traditional definitions of appropriateness, even though some people think that is what defines or constitutes “professionalism.”

But larger questions remain. How do we train medical professionals to be leaders in their field — to commence difficult conversations about death, to manage C-suite demands and requests, to work as a team with others, or to assuage patients’ concerns in a way that fosters compassion and trust?

Hospital executives and medical staff leaders who invest in professionalism training will be rewarded with happier, healthier patients, and doctors and nurses who bring joy and love to their work.

Regulating professionalism in medical school is challenging. While it’s crucial to instill traits like reliability and responsibility in future physicians, professionalism can also feel like a weapon wielded arbitrarily.

Some people of color worry over seemingly trivial matters like hairstyle, influenced by the prevailing notion that white people’s hair is the standard for a polished and professional look.

Personally, as an Iranian Canadian, I straightened my naturally curly hair for medical school interviews. One friend — a Black classmate who wore braids — confided that he also considered altering his appearance for interviews but decided against it, realizing he wouldn’t want to attend a school that deemed his appearance unprofessional. Another friend, a South Asian man with well-kempt but long, curly hair, was told he looked unprofessional by a clinical examiner.

Fortunately, our medical school ultimately acknowledged that professional standards shouldn’t be based on white norms around appearance. Now, as a practicing physician, I proudly wear my hair curly all the time.

Re “ NBC News Undoes Hire of McDaniel ” (Business, March 27), about the abrupt dismissal of Ronna McDaniel, the head of the Republican National Committee under former President Donald Trump:

Ms. McDaniel, who was hired by the network as an on-air political contributor, engaged in questionable and probably illegal behavior in Michigan after the 2020 election. Furthermore, she continues to profess that the election was rigged.

Those two facts alone would disqualify her from any journalistic assignment anywhere. The only conclusion to this episode is that NBC erred in its decision to hire her in the first place.

And we know that the same corporate apologists who pushed the failed policies of the past will seize on any excuse to try to drag us backward.

This reminds me that these wild animals are not intruding on us, but rather that we, in occupying their lands, are the real intruders. They were all here long before we occupied their lands.

Professionalism in the Workplace Expository Essay

The evidence of professionalism at the place of work is through many aspects such as the manner in which employees treat each other and the way through which the management treats its employees and other stakeholders of the firm.

In a business entity, you will find professionals from different fields and they all work with one central goal being customer satisfaction, sustaining the business and ensuring profitability. For the business to thrive, it is important for the individuals working herein to understand the roles each other plays.

It is not a wonder for one to find people working in the same organization yet they do not realize how each of their roles contributes to the success of the business and their success as well. In a hospital setup for example, one cannot help but appreciate the roles each one plays in that organization. It is easy to disregard the security guard, the secretary the people doing the laundry or the ones who are behind the scenes.

“They hardly interact with the clients” one would think, so why are they so important to the business? In a business organisation, the success of one professional is built on the platform of the other professionals he or she works with. Teamwork is the foundation for success in any workplace (Schmidt 293). A professional is always keen to, share ideas and to help other team members as needed.

As team players, the leaders to various groups in the teams at the place of work should take the initiatives to recognize the efforts of other members of the team especially regarding the success of the firm in terms of its outputs. It is imperative to realize that one’s skills, expertise, long experience are not enough to sustain the organizations success. Every individual plays a key role towards the final success of the company.

Teamwork allows companies to blend the strengths and perspectives of all their employees so that they can achieve organizational goals, increase productivity and guarantee that their clients’ needs are met (West 188). Inevitably, you will always encounter friction, as individuals in the team are different in the way they think and behave. There are instances when you remain silent yet you could use your voice to move the work forward.

This is because one must appreciate the reality that you are dealing with adults. However, it is a key learning point that to be effective in a team one needs to be an assertive communicator. Each team-member needs to seek out, to listen to, and to learn from one another.

According to (Nielsen 63) assertiveness refers to each one’s willingness to offer information with confidence, yet valuing and supporting the views of his or her teammates. The cooperation and assertiveness of each member means that decisions are made based on consensus which is reached by the full participation of every team member (Beeghley 162).

As a result of relating to other professionals in a team, one grows interpersonally and fully appreciates that together, everyone achieves more. Employees are expected t portray a positive approach towards their work despite the daily challenges that they may encounter in the course of executing their duties.

The mistakes that are committed by other members of the group provide a good learning environment for the rest of the members (Nielsen 90).
