School dropout is a major problem as it has negative impacts that result in high social costs. A learner can be called a dropout when the learner fails to enroll in school despite having reached the mandatory school age. This paper aims to identify the root causes of school dropouts in the Philippines, specifically in all regions for the years 2008 and 2013. The secondary data on the proportion of population 6 to 24 years old who are not attending school from the website of the Philippine Statistics Authority were used. The data were analyzed using R version 4.2.1. This paper employed descriptive statistics, namely frequency and percentage to identify the root causes of dropping out in the Philippines when grouped according to region and year. Percentage change (increase and decrease) were explored to track changes in the causes of school dropouts. The findings indicated that the high cost of education, and student employment or when the student is seeking employment were the root causes of dropouts in the Philippines for the years 2008 and 2013, respectively. Based on the findings, it is recommended that the Philippine government, through the Department of Education, should prioritize programs that will address the root causes of the school dropouts with the goal of decreasing the dropout rate in general.

One of the great problems of Ethiopia for the educational arena is retention. Averagely 8.07% of each year of the secondary education students is repeated due to lack of achievement in this country. The percentage of retention in a country shows what proportion of students is regularly repeated in the same grade and who are, therefore, committing different crimes and misbehaved behaviors. Grade retention predicts many negative student outcomes: the frustration and humiliation associated with repeating the curriculum, combined with one's physical size, may result in an increase in aggression and oppositional behavior. The main purpose of this study was to investigate some of the causes that contribute to grade nine students' grade retention in general secondary schools of Dabat district. It has attempted to identify the major factors under two headings: in-school and out-of-school factors to present separate area of intervention. In order to attain the objectives, the study was carried out in two general secondary schools which were selected using comprehensive sampling techniques. The study involved 264(M=106 & F=158) grade repeaters and 44 teachers and 2 principals. The data gathered were analyzed using percentage, mean, Spearmen rank order correlation coefficient and t-test. Based on the result of the analysis, among the in-school factors, the highest percentages were observed for difficulty of language of instruction, students' failure to study hard, poor quality of teaching, lack of guidance and counseling and frequent absenteeism of students were in-school related. On the other hand, low level of family income, parent (pupils) health problem, lack of parents support and child labor were identified as the major out-of-school causes for grade retention in grade nine secondary schools. It was also found out that the combined effect of both in-school and out-of-school factors was important in explaining students' grade retentions in the secondary schools of the district. The incidence of the problem is relatively higher among girls than among boys.

ABSTRACT TITLE : A COMPREHENSIVE INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOR MANAGING SCHOOL PROBLEMS Name of Researcher : Ana Rosa R. Rabanal KEY CONCEPTS : Comprehensive Intervention Program Behavioral Problems Academic Problems Academic Performance DEGREE : Doctor of Philosophy in Education SPECIALIZATION : Educational Management RESEARCH ADVISERS : Dr. Gabriel G. Uriarte Dr. Jose M. Ocampo This study attempted to assess the academic and behavioral problems of Public High School students in the Division of City Schools of Quezon City and to determine the possible relationship of behavioral and academic problems to academic performance. Results of the findings served as the basis of the comprehensive intervention program. Using a Descriptive –developmental method of research, this study involved five hundred student-respondents from five public high schools in the Division of City Schools, Quezon City who answered the Mooney Problem Checklist (MPCL) and Taylor Academic Problem Identification Check List (TAPICL). The results from MPCL by Mooney helped in assessing the behavioral problems, while the (TAPICL) by Taylor (1998) pointed out possible academic problems encountered by public high school students. Results of the study revealed that the common behavioral and academic problems of public high school students are on areas of home and family, adjustment to school work, and finances, living conditions and employment. The students’ greatest concerns are family quarrels, too many financial problems, being slow in Mathematics and worrying about examinations. It also revealed that their most predominant academic problems are on areas of problem solving, productivity, and academic skills. Further, they also have problems especially on study habits, organization, efficiency, planning, reading, spelling, and hearing vocabulary. The study further found out that these academic and behavioral problems are significantly related to academic performance in Mathematics and English, owing to the finding that the higher/ the more the behavioral problems, the higher/the more the academic problems encountered, and vice versa. These findings served as the springboard for the development of Comprehensive Intervention Program (CIP) to address these concerns and help high school students reach their potentials, which were later on tried out in one school to establish its effect on the problems identified. The study offers recommendations, especially on further research to try out the CIP on a larger scale with focus on other problem areas among students, such as relational, social, and technological.

The advocates of the School Learning Program (SLP), lay claim on relationship between teachers and students to improved performance of school and minimized learning difficulties. The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of performance and learning difficulties in Jomvu Primary. The study is guided by the following objectives: To find out methods used by teachers in teaching students with learning difficulties, to establish teaching resources, to find out the relationship of teachers, staff members and the students and to find out causes of the learning difficulties in Jomvu primary. The researcher will use conceptual framework to demonstrate the relationship between the dependent variable and independent variables. The study will target Jomvu primary schools in Mombasa County. The sample size will be 52. The study will use primary data which will be collected through use of questionnaires. A modified Likert scale and chi-square test were also used to measure the strength of relationship between different variables. A pilot study will be carried out to refine the instrument. The quality and consistency of the study will further be assessed. Data analysis will be performed on a PC computer using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS Version 22) for Windows. Analysis will be done using frequency counts, percentages, means and standard deviation, regression, correlation and the information generated will be presented in form of graphs, charts and tables.
