Because we love digging into the wisdom of scientists past and present, reminding ourselves why the work we do is so important. We’re sure every passionate early career researcher will agree! “[This is] my favorite quote that I have held onto since graduate school,” says Madison Fletcher , a postdoc at the University of California, Irvine. We can see why, and we love this too.

We love this quote, shared with us by Dr Samantha Murray . It reminds us that our passion for what we do is as important as our ability.

14. “If you know you are on the right track, if you have this inner knowledge, then nobody can turn you off... no matter what they say.” – Barbara McClintock

Maria Diehl shared this wonderful quote from Barbara McClintock, cytogeneticist and winner of the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, with us. A brilliant reminder to always trust our gut instinct, and follow our curiosity.

15. “Above all, don't fear difficult moments. The best comes from them.” – Rita Levi-Montalcini

Another brilliant quote shared by Maria Diehl. Rita Levi-Montalcini won the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with colleague Stanley Cohen for the discovery of nerve growth factor. So we’re definitely inclined to take her advice.

Another great quote that’s one of Paula’s favourites, and one to remember when we feel too scared to ask that burning question. We’re all still learning, no matter how far along our career path we are. That’s the beauty of science.

Yep, this is our third Einstein quote of the article. But you can’t deny the guy knew what he was talking about! This quote shared by our Head of Chemistry Dr Richard Patterson reminds us of the importance of thinking outside of the box.

What better sentiment to end on than this? This is one is our Director of Marketing Dr Sam Roome ’s favorite quote. Because science is sometimes hard, and messy, and complicated, and frustrating… but at its core, it’s absolutely beautiful.

We are in many ways unimaginably small within this universe, yet uniquely special. We have the power to go to space, are self aware, and masters of our own destiny. Yet we are on a small planet circling a very average star, spiraling around a massive galaxy of hundreds of billions of stars. That galaxy, on top of that, is just one of billions of galaxies. Yet we are alive today, and that is a gift no one can undervalue.

The Isaac Newton ( 1642 - 1727) quote above, from Memoirs of the Life, Writing, and Discoveries of Sir Isaac Newton (1885) by Sir David Brewster speaks to the depth of what we have left to discover. This world is grand and there lies an ocean of undiscovered findings that are waiting for eager and curious minds.

2. Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe. - Albert Einstein

This quote, first appearing in Ego, Hunger, and Aggression: a Revision of Freud’s Theory and Method by Frederick S. Perls. Einstein ( 1879 - 1955) is known to have clashed with popular thinking and the limited imagination of fellow scientists and the public.

Sir Fred Hoyle ( 1915 - 2001) , an astronomer, was known for controversial stances on scientific matters and contribution to stellar nucleosynthesis. He often rejected the Big Bang Theory and instead favored a steady state university theory.

Georg Lichtenberg ( 1742 - 1799) was a German experimental physicist known for satire. Science is built upon previous knowledge, which is incredible that what is now common sense mathematics was once never before discovered or thought of.

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473 - 1543) was a Polish renaissance mathematician and astronomer known for proposing that the Sun, in fact, is the center of the universe. Nicolaus' inspirational quote is ripe with anger and condemnation. This reminds us that religion and science have always lived in parallel, sometimes symbiotically, sometimes not.

John Archibald Wheeler (1911 - 2008) was an American theoretical physicist largely credited for reviving dialogue in general relativity. Here, John Wheeler reminds us that in nature and human imagination, anything is possible .

Thomas Chamberlin's inspirational quote above was given during the 1888 University of Michigan Annual Commencement. Thomas Chamberlin (1843 - 1928) was an influential geologist who founded the Journal of Geology.

If you're not inspired out and you haven't yet read The Power Of Positive Thinking , I highly recommend purchasing it or getting a copy from your local library. This self-help book by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale was published in 2003 and profoundly impacted my life, goals, and outlook of my life. Although Peale does rely on religious-based practices, you do not have to be religious to employ the same strategy. Alter the strategy to fit who you are.

This book discusses channeling positive thought and action and not letting negativity and cynicism get in the way. If you find yourself overwhelmed by situations that are present every day, this book allows for positive thinking to defeat negative thoughts and help you aspire to the goals you set forth for yourself. No one owns your mood or thoughts beyond you, this book teaches you how to take control of how situations and people affect your mood. If you do not allow your outlook to be affected by others, you can focus on positive thought and your goals.

This book has brought many dedicated believers and has transformed many people's lives. Lastly, I'll leave you with one of the best TED talks I have ever watched by Amy Cuddy , a social psychologist and Associate Professor at Harvard Business School . Cuddy's TED talk has been viewed more than 32 million times and is the second most viewed TED talk of all time.

Cuddy has spent her life studying how people judge other people and influence each other. She researches stereotypes, discrimination, and much more. In her TED talk Cuddy reveals the power pose and how important postures demonstrating confidence actually affect our mood, testosterone, and cortisol levels in our brain. One's mood can be altered and influenced not only by positive thinking, but also power poses and confident stances. This is a must watch for those looking for a bit more motivation!

QIAGEN (QGEN) Boosts Cancer Research Suite With New Launches

QIAGEN N.V. ( QGEN Quick Quote QGEN - Free Report ) recently announced a sequence of new products to augment cancer research further and to enable urine collection and stabilization as a new approach for liquid biopsy. The three new products, coupled with the IVD version of QIAGEN's digital PCR platform QIAcuity, are planned to be released in mid-2024.

The new products are likely to be featured at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in San Diego, California, from Apr 5-10.

Product Details

The first product introduced is QIAcuity dPCR PanCancer Kits. The kits will enable researchers to use QIAGEN's QIAcuity dPCR technique to detect several EGFR and BRAF signature mutations simultaneously and with high sensitivity. The technology has the potential to be adapted to identify other genes associated with cancer risks.

To advance research on how the immune system interacts with cancer, QIAGEN has introduced the QIAseq Targeted RNA-seq Panel for T-cell receptors. With great precision and sensitivity, this library prep kit will expedite research in several areas, including the potential biomarker applications of the T-cell receptor repertoire in cancer and the enhancement of tumor-infiltrating T-cell repertoire knowledge.

Later this year, PreAnalytiX, a joint venture between QIAGEN and BD, will introduce the PAXgene Urine Liquid Biopsy Set. It will bridge existing preanalytical workflow gaps for cell-free DNA in urine (ucfDNA) and offer a simple, non-invasive collection method for liquid biopsy.

Aside from showcasing its digital PCR technology growth from research to the clinical arena, QIAGEN will also highlight the impending debut of the QIAcuity system for IVD testing during the AACR meeting. Along with IVD functionality, the QIAcuityDx system offers a customized assay development environment.

Benefits of New Launches

Per QIAGEN management, the company is thrilled to share its most recent breakthrough in digital PCR, NGS, non-invasive sample collection and DNA stabilization with the research community. This will allow the community to acquire significant insights into cancer.

The new QIAcuity PanCancer kits will improve understanding of EGFR- and BRAF-driven tumors. At the same time, the QIAcuity IVD system, set to emerge this summer, will turn cancer research into clinical applications and precision diagnostics.

The company also stated that its innovative solutions for urine liquid biopsy and targeted RNA-sequencing provide researchers with new efficient tools that could help them discover minimal residual disease, track therapy response, and uncover novel therapeutic targets.

Per Grand View Research , the global cancer diagnostics market size was estimated at $107.45 billion in 2023 and is expected to witness a CAGR of 6.16% from 2024 to 2030. The growth of this industry is attributed to the growing prevalence of cancer, technological advancements in diagnostics procedures, and rising initiatives undertaken by private and public organizations.

Other Notable Highlights

In January 2024, QIAGEN announced a collaboration with Penn State University, United States, to create a shared research and education facility for fast-developing microbiome sciences. The company will provide instruments and kits for preparing and processing microbial samples for the flagship project at Penn State’s Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, ‘One Health Microbiome Center,’ to support faculty and students.

Earlier in November 2023, QIAGEN expanded its sample technologies portfolio with the introduction of two new products aimed at supporting researchers in managing diverse materials such as bone, tissue and soil samples. Most americans favor legalizing marijuana for medical, recreational use, legalizing recreational marijuana viewed as good for local economies; mixed views of impact on drug use, community safety.

Pew Research Center conducted this study to understand the public’s views about the legalization of marijuana in the United States. For this analysis, we surveyed 5,140 adults from Jan. 16 to Jan. 21, 2024. Everyone who took part in this survey is a member of the Center’s American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATP’s methodology .

As more states pass laws legalizing marijuana for recreational use , Americans continue to favor legalization of both medical and recreational use of the drug.

An overwhelming share of U.S. adults (88%) say marijuana should be legal for medical or recreational use.

Nearly six-in-ten Americans (57%) say that marijuana should be legal for medical and recreational purposes, while roughly a third (32%) say that marijuana should be legal for medical use only.

Just 11% of Americans say that the drug should not be legal at all.

Opinions about marijuana legalization have changed little over the past five years, according to the Pew Research Center survey, conducted Jan. 16-21, 2024, among 5,14o adults.

The impact of legalizing marijuana for recreational use

While a majority of Americans continue to say marijuana should be legal , there are varying views about the impacts of recreational legalization.

About half of Americans (52%) say that legalizing the recreational use of marijuana is good for local economies; just 17% think it is bad and 29% say it has no impact.

More adults also say legalizing marijuana for recreational use makes the criminal justice system more fair (42%) than less fair (18%); 38% say it has no impact.

However, Americans have mixed views on the impact of legalizing marijuana for recreational use on:

• Use of other drugs: About as many say it increases (29%) as say it decreases (27%) the use of other drugs, like heroin, fentanyl and cocaine (42% say it has no impact).
• Community safety: More Americans say legalizing recreational marijuana makes communities less safe (34%) than say it makes them safer (21%); 44% say it has no impact.

Partisan differences on impact of recreational use of marijuana

There are deep partisan divisions regarding the impact of marijuana legalization for recreational use.

Majorities of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say legalizing recreational marijuana is good for local economies (64% say this) and makes the criminal justice system fairer (58%).

Fewer Republicans and Republican leaners say legalization for recreational use has a positive effect on local economies (41%) and the criminal justice system (27%).

Republicans are more likely than Democrats to cite downsides from legalizing recreational marijuana:

• 42% of Republicans say it increases the use of other drugs, like heroin, fentanyl and cocaine, compared with just 17% of Democrats.
• 48% of Republicans say it makes communities less safe, more than double the share of Democrats (21%) who say this.

Demographic, partisan differences in views of marijuana legalization

Sizable age and partisan differences persist on the issue of marijuana legalization though small shares of adults across demographic groups are completely opposed to it.

Older adults are far less likely than younger adults to favor marijuana legalization.

This is particularly the case among adults ages 75 and older: 31% say marijuana should be legal for both medical and recreational use.

By comparison, half of adults between the ages of 65 and 74 say marijuana should be legal for medical and recreational use, and larger shares in younger age groups say the same.

Republicans continue to be less supportive than Democrats of legalizing marijuana for both legal and recreational use: 42% of Republicans favor legalizing marijuana for both purposes, compared with 72% of Democrats.

There continue to be ideological differences within each party:

• 34% of conservative Republicans say marijuana should be legal for medical and recreational use, compared with a 57% majority of moderate and liberal Republicans.
• 62% of conservative and moderate Democrats say marijuana should be legal for medical and recreational use, while an overwhelming majority of liberal Democrats (84%) say this.

Views of marijuana legalization vary by age within both parties

Along with differences by party and age, there are also age differences within each party on the issue.

A 57% majority of Republicans ages 18 to 29 favor making marijuana legal for medical and recreational use, compared with 52% among those ages 30 to 49 and much smaller shares of older Republicans.

Still, wide majorities of Republicans in all age groups favor legalizing marijuana at least for medical use. Among those ages 65 and older, just 20% say marijuana should not be legal even for medical purposes.

While majorities of Democrats across all age groups support legalizing marijuana for medical and recreational use, older Democrats are less likely to say this.

About half of Democrats ages 75 and older (53%) say marijuana should be legal for both purposes, but much larger shares of younger Democrats say the same (including 81% of Democrats ages 18 to 29). Still, only 7% of Democrats ages 65 and older think marijuana should not be legalized even for medical use, similar to the share of all other Democrats who say this.

Views of the effects of legalizing recreational marijuana among racial and ethnic groups

Substantial shares of Americans across racial and ethnic groups say when marijuana is legal for recreational use, it has a more positive than negative impact on the economy and criminal justice system.

About half of White (52%), Black (53%) and Hispanic (51%) adults say legalizing recreational marijuana is good for local economies. A slightly smaller share of Asian adults (46%) say the same.

Criminal justice

Across racial and ethnic groups, about four-in-ten say that recreational marijuana being legal makes the criminal justice system fairer, with smaller shares saying it would make it less fair.

However, there are wider racial differences on questions regarding the impact of recreational marijuana on the use of other drugs and the safety of communities.

Use of other drugs

Nearly half of Black adults (48%) say recreational marijuana legalization doesn’t have an effect on the use of drugs like heroin, fentanyl and cocaine. Another 32% in this group say it decreases the use of these drugs and 18% say it increases their use.

In contrast, Hispanic adults are slightly more likely to say legal marijuana increases the use of these other drugs (39%) than to say it decreases this use (30%); 29% say it has no impact.

Among White adults, the balance of opinion is mixed: 28% say marijuana legalization increases the use of other drugs and 25% say it decreases their use (45% say it has no impact). Views among Asian adults are also mixed, though a smaller share (31%) say legalization has no impact on the use of other drugs.

Community safety

Hispanic and Asian adults also are more likely to say marijuana’s legalization makes communities less safe: 41% of Hispanic adults and 46% of Asian adults say this, compared with 34% of White adults and 24% of Black adults.

Wide age gap on views of impact of legalizing recreational marijuana

Young Americans view the legalization of marijuana for recreational use in more positive terms compared with their older counterparts.

Clear majorities of adults under 30 say it is good for local economies (71%) and that it makes the criminal justice system fairer (59%).

By comparison, a third of Americans ages 65 and older say legalizing the recreational use of marijuana is good for local economies; about as many (32%) say it makes the criminal justice system more fair.

There also are sizable differences in opinion by age about how legalizing recreational marijuana affects the use of other drugs and the safety of communities.
