Dialysis Nurse: In-Demand Specialty for Travel Nursing Jobs

Dialysis nursing is one of the most rewarding, and most challenging, nursing specialties. There are almost 750,000 Americans currently diagnosed with end-stage renal disease, representing nearly 10% of the U.S. population. With that number expected to increase by 5% each year, the need for nurses skilled in medicating, supporting, and monitoring patients on dialysis is growing. At the same time, the United States is anticipating a critical nursing shortage that is felt across all specialty areas.

Because of the unique stresses that dialysis nurses face, travel nurses with high-quality dialysis skills and experience are in particularly high demand: hospitals, dialysis centers, and other healthcare settings rely upon travel nurses to cover short-term healthcare staffing needs — and they provide generous travel nurse salaries as well as the many other benefits that travel nursing offers.

Earn up to $2,300 a week as a dialysis travel nurse. Speak to a recruiter today!

What is a Dialysis Nurse?

Dialysis nurses are registered nurses (RNs) who provide care and support for patients diagnosed with kidney disease. Patients suffering from either acute or chronic renal failure have only two treatment options: kidney transplant or dialysis. Dialysis treatment is a process in which equipment called a hemodialyzer mechanically balances the chemicals in a patient’s blood and removes the waste, salt, and extra water that the body would normally be able to process on its own. Hemodialysis is one of the two types of dialysis available. It usually needs to be completed three times a week and takes about four hours per treatment.

Dialysis equipment can be located in hospitals, transplant centers, and specialized dialysis units, outpatient clinics, in patients’ homes , and in nursing, hospice, and rehabilitation facilities. It can even be found on cruise ships and in resort towns, as the rapidly growing population of patients diagnosed with kidney disease has created a demand for access wherever patients need or want to be. That means that dialysis travel nurses are offered the opportunity to work in all of these settings, and more.

Dialysis RN skills go far beyond the care responsibilities required by the general patient population.

Dialysis nurses need to prime the hemodialyzer and bloodlines and prepare the equipment for each patient, overseeing the treatment from start to finish — including for peritoneal dialysis. They record and monitor patient vital signs, cannulate accesses, administer medications, and remove femoral sheaths, as well as clean and dress both permanent and temporary catheters. They also provide dialysis patients with critical education on how to manage their condition, with particular attention paid to diet, nutrition, and exercise as well as self-medication.

Dialysis nursing offers the unique opportunity to establish relationships with patients.

Because patients have to spend so many hours in dialysis, and are on a regular schedule of treatments, dialysis nurses have a profound exposure to their patients fears, stresses, and anxieties. Improving patients’ quality of life is an important part of their job description, through emotional and mental support as they do in the technical care that they provide.

Dialysis Nurse Salary and Job Growth Potential

The demand for nurses with dialysis experience is expected to increase in the next several years. This need is due in part to the national nursing shortage and the predicted 15% increase in demand according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics as well as the anticipated increase in the number of patients diagnosed with kidney disease.

Conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure contribute to the risk for chronic kidney disease, and so does aging. As America’s population grows older, the need for nurses qualified to provide specialized care for patients with acute and chronic kidney disease will continue to grow.

The average national salary for a dialysis nurse is $133,462 per year.

According to Indeed.com , the average national salary for a dialysis nurse is $133,462 per year, with variables based on years and type of experience, job setting and level of education.

There are significant differences in the salaries offered in different areas of the country. Dialysis nurses are also eligble for overtime pay that can boost their income by an average of $12,750 per year

Compensation is often enhanced by employee benefits, which can include health, dental and vision insurance, life, short-term and long-term disability insurance, vacation and sick leave, and matching contributions to a 401K plan.

Top Paying Cities for Dialysis Nurses in 2021

Dialysis Nurse Education Requirements, Certifications, and Professional Groups

Working in dialysis requires an in-depth understanding of the kidneys and their diseases, as well as of the sophisticated machinery used for patient care. Most dialysis nurses are:

  • Registered Nurses who have earned their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), or
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) who have earned their Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree and who have pursued special certifications in either dialysis or nephrology.

To become a Certified Dialysis Nurse by the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission , you must hold a full and unrestricted license as an RN and have completed a minimum of 2,000 hours in nephrology nursing care for patients needing dialysis, as well as twenty contact hours of continuing education in nephrology nursing within two years of submitting the exam application. To be certified as a Nephrology Nurse the requirements increase to a minimum of 3,000 hours, while APRN Nurse Practitioners who wish to be certified as Nephrology Nurse-Nurse Practitioners (CNN-NP) also require at least 2,000 hours practicing in nephrology.

Dialysis nurses often benefit from membership in the American Nephrology Nurses Association , which provides education, advocacy, networking, and science throughout the nephrology nursing spectrum.

travel assignment dialysis

Table of Contents

Dialysis nurses fill an essential role - providing life-preserving care for those suffering from kidney failure. Their skillset, compassion, and attention to detail can significantly improve quality of life and longevity. If you want to become a dialysis nurse and advance your career, specialized education and certification are key. With the proper education, certifications, and opportunities, you can have a successful career as a travel dialysis nurse. This guide explores dialysis nurses' daily responsibilities, steps to gain qualifications, rewarding aspects of this meaningful role, opportunities for career growth, and how to leverage travel nursing to expand your nursing expertise. Let's dive into everything aspiring and current dialysis nurses need to know about pursuing this specialty.

Understanding the Role of a Dialysis Nurse

Dialysis nurses play a critical role in providing life-sustaining care to patients with kidney failure and end-stage renal disease. As a dialysis nurse, your responsibilities involve managing all aspects of your patients’ dialysis treatments. This includes:

Reviewing Patient Medical Histories and Lab Results

Dialysis nurses carefully review patients' medical histories and lab results to understand individual health profiles. This step is essential for tailoring dialysis treatments to each patient's specific needs.

Preparing Dialysis Machines and Verifying Proper Function

Before each session, dialysis nurses meticulously prepare dialysis machines, ensuring they are in optimal working condition. This includes verifying the functionality of equipment to provide a seamless and effective treatment.

Cannulating Access Sites and Initiating Dialysis Treatment

Dialysis nurses skillfully cannulate access sites, initiating the dialysis treatment process. This involves connecting the patient to the dialysis machine, allowing for the efficient removal of waste products and excess fluids from the blood.

Monitoring Vital Signs and Making Adjustments as Needed

Throughout the dialysis session, nurses closely monitor vital signs, making real-time adjustments as necessary. This proactive approach ensures patient safety and the effectiveness of the treatment.

Administering Intravenous Medications and Fluids

Dialysis nurses may administer intravenous medications and fluids to address specific medical needs, contributing to the overall well-being of patients.

Assessing Dialysis Adequacy and Troubleshooting Any Issues

An integral part of their role, dialysis nurses continually assess the adequacy of dialysis treatment and troubleshoot any issues that may arise during the session.

Recording Detailed Treatment Information in Electronic Medical Records

Accurate record-keeping is vital in healthcare, and dialysis nurses meticulously record detailed treatment information in electronic medical records. This helps maintain a comprehensive patient history and ensures continuity of care.

Educating Patients on Diet, Medications, and Self-Care

Dialysis nurses actively engage in patient education, providing valuable insights on dietary restrictions, medication management, and self-care practices. Empowering patients with knowledge enhances their ability to manage their health outside of the clinical setting.

The Importance and Impact of Dialysis Nurses

With over 500,000 Americans relying on life-sustaining dialysis treatments, skilled dialysis nurses are indispensable. As a dialysis nurse, each treatment you oversee maintains homeostasis and removes waste from patients’ blood when their kidneys can’t. By helping patients manage chronic kidney disease through education and attentive care during treatments, you empower them to take an active role in protecting their health. Dialysis nurses have a profound effect on both the longevity and quality of life for those with kidney disease.

Prerequisites and Education Requirements for a Dialysis Nurse

To qualify for a dialysis nursing career, you must first become a registered nurse (RN) through completion of an accredited nursing program. Dialysis nursing requires aptitude in advanced clinical skills, a detail-oriented approach, emotional intelligence, and unwavering empathy. Specialized training and certification in nephrology nursing also expand competency in providing dialysis care.

Steps to Becoming a Dialysis Nurse

Step 1: completing an approved nursing program.

You must graduate from a state-approved nursing program, like an Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). BSN programs include additional coursework to strengthen clinical expertise. Obtaining a BSN is required for advanced nursing positions. Both ADN and BSN graduates are qualified to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) licensing exam to practice as an RN.

Step 2: Gaining Experience through Internships and Job Roles

Of the 2-4 years of clinical experience required for dialysis nurse roles, it’s ideal to complete nursing internships specifically focused on nephrology and dialysis patient populations during school. Once licensed, pursue nursing roles in related specialties like medical-surgical, critical care, or nephrology to develop your skills. Organizations often provide extensive on-the-job dialysis training.

Step 3: Earning a Certification in Nephrology Nursing

The gold standard in dialysis nursing is earning your Certified Nephrology Nurse (CNN) credentials from the Nephrology Nursing Certification Board (NNCB). Eligibility requires a current nursing license and 3,000 hours of experience across nephrology areas within 3 years before submitting an application.

Being a certified dialysis nurse demonstrates your dedication by attaining specialized expertise to better care for kidney patients. Some employers may cover costs for exam fees and study materials. Recertification through continuing education requirements sustains best practice standards.

Challenges and Rewards in Dialysis Nursing Career

Dialysis nursing can be physically and emotionally taxing due to its fast pace and the chronic nature of kidney disease. However, your nursing expertise has the potential to significantly extend and enrich patients’ lives. The bonds you form through regular care during ongoing treatments can be deeply meaningful. Barriers like dietary restrictions and dialysis side effects are easier to overcome with an advocate guiding the way.

As dialysis techniques, policies, and regulations evolve, your focus on continuing education ensures you can provide the most current treatments. Joining communities like the American Nephrology Nurses Association connects you with resources and fellow nurses. While demanding, dialysis nursing offers immense fulfillment through clinical excellence and compassion.

The Importance of Continuous Learning and Recertification in Dialysis Nursing

The dynamic nature of healthcare necessitates that dialysis nurses prioritize continuing education. Pursuing a graduate degree, certification in another nursing specialty, teaching roles to mentor others, and attending conferences broadens your perspective.

Through researching evidence-based techniques and the latest technology, you constantly refine your clinical skills. This cultivates a deeper appreciation for the multifaceted factors that enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction. Recertification also ensures your practice stays current with the latest safety protocols, dialysis methods, patient education, and nephrology advancements.

Career Growth and Advancement Opportunities for Dialysis Nurses

With specialized skills and direct patient care experience, talented dialysis nurses have options to advance professionally. You can pursue roles managing a clinic, educating new dialysis nurses, consulting for corporations developing dialysis products and equipment, or conducting research that progresses treatment efficacy and best practices. With the increasing popularity of travel nursing, opportunities are available for those seeking a dynamic and diverse nursing career. Travel nursing allows dialysis nurses to experience different healthcare settings, broaden their skill sets, grow their careers, and enjoy the benefits of exploring new locations.

Average Dialysis Nurse Salary

Understanding the average salary for a dialysis nurse in the U.S. involves considering several key factors:

  • Experience and Expertise: Seasoned nurses command higher wages.
  • Educational Attainment: Advanced degrees and certifications contribute to increased earning potential.
  • Location and Facility Type: Areas with higher living costs and prestigious facilities offer higher salaries.

For travel nurses in dialysis, the earning landscape is enhanced.

  • Competitive Pay Rates: Exceeding the national average.
  • Bonuses and Incentives: Including signing bonuses and referral bonuses.
  • Housing and Travel Stipends: Additional financial support for relocation.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: These vary depending on the agency you work with.

Four American-trained, board-certified doctors and their assistants prescribe medications and provide diagnostic outpatient services and lab work. Introduction to Travel Allied HCP

What is a travel allied hcp.

Allied healthcare professionals are individuals who work in the healthcare area but do not have anything to do with medicine and nursing. Many diverse professions qualify as allied health, but the most frequent include

  • Experts in oral hygiene.
  • Audiologists and Speech Therapists.
  • Therapists who specialize in the treatment of occupational disorders.
  • Healthcare professionals who specialize in physical therapy.
  • Practitioners of respiratory therapy.
  • Dieticians.
  • Diagnostic medical sonographers and radiographers.
  • Experts in the field of medical technology.

What do travel allied HCPs do?

Traveling in the allied health field is very similar to traveling as a nurse. As with travel nurses , allied health professionals also take temporary assignments at hospitals and clinics all throughout the country. These positions are available for a variety of reasons, including:

  • The medical staff is short one doctor due to maternity leave.
  • There has been an unexpected demand for seasoned experts.
  • Changes in population that occur seasonally in a certain city.
  • A worldwide epidemic.

Hospitals and other medical centers often work with staffing firms to find qualified allied health professionals for temporary roles. Also, allied health workers have more leeway in deciding where they wish to work because they are typically contracted through a staffing agency rather than directly by a healthcare provider.

What are allied health travel specialists important?

There is no way to overstate the value of Allied Health Professionals in the healthcare system. As therapists, scientists, technologists, administrators, managers, and assistants in fields like radiology, cardiology, and surgery, among others, it is their responsibility to ensure that patients are completely satisfied with the care they receive.  Allied health is a great option for people who want to help others but don’t want to go to medical school because it allows them to do so without spending as much time and money on their education.

High Demand for Travel Allied HCPs

There is a significant need for skilled temporary workers to satisfy fluctuating labor force levels. Many traveling allied workers also receive housing allowances that are exempt from taxation. Most professionals can make significantly more money by traveling rather than working in one place permanently.

Assignment Duration

The length of travel assignments depends on the particular role.  Generally speaking, most assignments are 13 weeks . However, some contracts range anywhere from 8 weeks to 9 months.

Life of Travel Allied HCP

Aside from the obvious financial benefits, traveling allied health professionals enjoy more flexibility in their schedules, get to experience new places, and often have more rewarding experiences overall than their counterparts in permanent professions.

Working Conditions

Traveling in the allied health field is very similar to traveling as a nurse. Short-term vacancies in healthcare facilities across the country can be filled by traveling allied health professionals for a variety of reasons, including seasonal population shifts, maternity absences, vacations, and worldwide pandemics.

Traveling healthcare workers (traveling therapists, traveling nurses, traveling pharmacists, etc.) fall under the umbrella term “allied health” and can be any licensed healthcare practitioner who chooses to practice in a different location.

Working in the travel industry is a great way to see the country and get a decent living wage at the same time. Like travel nurses, allied health professionals who work on the road tend to make more money than their permanent hospital counterparts.

Higher Pay and Benefits

Pay for allied health travel employment varies greatly due to the diversity of the field. Even so, jobs in the field of therapy, for instance, typically pay around $1,600 per week.  Keep in mind that many employers provide accommodation, meals, and incidental allowances to their traveling allied health employees. Overall, travel specialists have high pay and benefits they can enjoy.

Benefits of being a Travel Allied HCP

The ability to see the country (or world) while doing meaningful work is noted most frequently as a motivating factor by those who choose to work as an allied health travel professional. This benefit, together with the greater pay and the chance to see the world, is what draws many people to the profession of travel nursing, along with the following:

Great Travel Opportunities

Allied health professionals who travel can advance their careers by working in a variety of medical institutions and gaining experience with cutting-edge technology. When you travel, you develop personally and acquire new talents at the same time.

Work Flexibility

Additionally, you get the opportunity to try your hand at a variety of jobs. It is a wonderful opportunity to figure out the location in which you would like to settle down permanently.

Fantastic Growth Opportunities

One of the perks of being a travel nurse is getting to work in some of the finest medical centers in the country or the world. As a result of their ability to potentially visit multiple of these in a single year, they can add an impressive amount of experience to their resume. Despite the many positives and exciting aspects of becoming a travel nurse, it is clear that the profession is hard.

Full Support From Stability Healthcare

Here at Stability Healthcare, our nurses always come first. As a company, we’ve always been focused on making it easy and helpful for travel nurses to find jobs. Our foundation is in technology, and from there, we’ve developed a user-friendly platform and a dedicated team to assist you at every turn. That means you can spend less time looking for work and more time fulfilling your travel nursing ambitions.

Becoming a Travel Allied HCP

Opportunities for healthcare professionals in the field of travel are not restricted to nurses. You can also get similar benefits through working in a traveling allied health capacity.  If you’re looking for a job in the allied health field, you’ll need the same schooling as any other medical professional. Still, beyond that, there are really only two main requirements:

  • Your field may need you to get a certain license or certification before you can begin employment.
  • Experience in the field, preferably in a hospital setting, of one to three years.

In addition, some employers seek candidates who have completed industry-standard training or earned professional certifications in areas like Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. As a traveling medical staff member, you’ll stand out more if you have as many relevant credentials as feasible.  Beginning a job in travel allied health also requires a drug test, background check, and proof of vaccinations.  The process of finding travel jobs as a healthcare practitioner is simplified when working with a company that caters specifically to this industry.

Certifications and Credentials

The Enhanced Nursing Licensure Compact is in place to assure uniformity of requirements across the states and to facilitate the use of a single license to practice nursing in over 25 of them. To work as a nurse in certain jurisdictions, you’ll need a license that’s valid there.

After passing the necessary exams and receiving your license, most hospitals demand that a traveling healthcare worker has worked in an acute care setting for at least a year.

The American College of Emergency Nurses Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (PALS) or Advanced Women’s Health Nursing (AWHONN) certification may also be necessary.

While not all nursing or allied health travel specializations call for certification, it can be quite helpful in establishing your credibility as an expert in your chosen profession.

Becoming an International Travel Allied HCP

You should expect increased interaction, quicker responses, and individualized contracts. You can count on being heard and having your well-being (personal and professional) regularly assessed.  Living abroad as a travel allied health specialist can change your life, and if hired by our team at Stability Healthcare, then you’ll get all the necessary benefits.

Finding Travel Allied HCP Jobs

As the name implies, travel allied health professionals are healthcare specialists who get paid extremely well to work 13-week contracts in different locations across the country.  It’s up to you to pick and choose between available travel allied health jobs and the locations and shift schedules that you like. However, if you want to compete for the top jobs in the travel allied health industry, you’ll need a solid plan.

  • Processing papers.
  • Contact the hospital on your behalf.
  • Assisting you in finding a place to live, among other things.

Traditional Recruiters

Online platforms, blended online platforms with support, how to find the best agency.

Since many hospitals and businesses have established relationships with travel nursing agencies, they are willing to give competitive salaries and excellent working conditions in order to attract and retain the most qualified candidates. The greater the number of contracts such as these an agency has, the better the opportunity will be for allied health travel nurses.  When considering a nursing placement agency, it is always a good idea to get the opinion of other nurses regarding the kind of assignments the agency typically offers. Be sure to inquire about the assignment length, the range of specializations available, and the level of care provided by the institutions they partner with.

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.
