How Self Discipline Can Improve Your Whole Life

Most people think of self discipline as something that is only useful in a professional setting. The truth is, though, that better self discipline can improve every aspect of your life. Here are some of the ways that self discipline can help you live a happier and more productive life.

Self discipline is something that many people need to work on. It is all about learning to control yourself and make good decisions. When you have self discipline, you are less likely to give in to temptation or make impulsive decisions.

You can learn and practice self discipline in a number of ways. One way to do this is by setting yourself small goals and then working towards them. Another way to work on self discipline is by using a journal or planner to keep track of your goals and progress. You can also try meditation or mindfulness exercises to help you focus and be in the moment. Some people find that working with a discipline coach helps them get started and keep them on track with improving self discipline.

Some people only exercise self discipline in the parts of their lives they deem as necessities – such as turning up to work on time and getting the job done. But self discipline is a skill that can be applied to every aspect of life. And the rewards can be immense. Here’s how self discipline can improve different aspects of your life.

It Will Help You Reach Your Full Potential

When you have self discipline, you are able to push yourself to achieve things you never thought possible. You set high standards for yourself and then work hard to meet them. This can lead to personal and professional success. It can also help you feel proud of yourself and your accomplishments. Ultimately, it can help you be the best you can be in all aspects of your life.

It Will Help You Achieve Your Goals

Self discipline can help you achieve both short-term and long-term goals. When you have self discipline, you are more likely to stick to your goals and see them through to the end. This is because you are less likely to get sidetracked or give up when things get tough. Whether you want to lose weight, start a business, or save for a house, self discipline can help you achieve your goals.

It Will Help You Be More Productive

Self discipline can help you get more done in less time. When you have self discipline, you are less likely to procrastinate or waste time on things that are not important. This means you can use your time more effectively and get more done. This can lead to greater productivity at work, at home, and in your personal life.

It Will Help You Be Healthier

Self discipline can also help you live a healthier life. When you have self discipline, you are more likely to make healthy choices and stick to them. This means you will be less likely to overeat, smoke, or engage in other unhealthy behaviors. It can also mean you are more likely to exercise regularly and get enough sleep. All of these things can lead to better physical and mental health.

It Will Help You Reduce Stress

Self discipline can also help you reduce stress. When you have self discipline, you are less likely to worry about things that are out of your control. This means you will be less likely to stress about things that you cannot change. This can lead to a reduction in anxiety and a feeling of calmness.

It Will Improve Your Relationships

Self discipline can also help improve your relationships. When you have self discipline, you are less likely to say or do things that you will later regret. This means you are more likely to communicate effectively and resolve conflict in a healthy way. This can lead to stronger and more meaningful relationships. Better relationships could be with your partner, your family members, friends and even your work colleagues.

It Will Help You Succeed At Work Or In Business

Self discipline can also help you succeed at work or in business. When you have self discipline, you are more likely to meet deadlines, stay organized, and follow through with your commitments. This can lead to more success in your career or business. It can also mean you are more likely to get promoted or receive raises and bonuses.

It Will Help You Save Money And Achieve Financial Security

Self discipline can also help you save money. When you have self discipline, you are less likely to make impulse purchases or spend money on things you don’t need. This means you can put more money into savings and investments. It means you’re more likely to make informed decisions about your purchases, and drive money towards things that make sense in the medium to long term, such as investing in your home. This can lead to greater financial security in the future.

It Will Help You Be Happier

Last but not least, self discipline can help you be happier. When you have self discipline, you are less likely to dwell on negative thoughts or engage in self-destructive behaviors. This means you will be more likely to focus on the positive and enjoy your life. This can lead to a greater sense of happiness and wellbeing.

So, as you can see, self discipline can improve your whole life. If you want to be more successful, productive, and happy, then start working on your self discipline today.

Why Self-Discipline is Important (11 Key Reasons)

Have you ever wondered why self-discipline is important?

This article is going to help answer that question. I am going to go over:

  • WHAT self-discipline is
  • Why self-discipline can be CHALLENGING
  • Why self-discipline is IMPORTANT

Including providing 11 huge reasons WHY self-discipline is IMPORTANT, and can transform your life!

What Self-Discipline Is

Here is the definition of self-discipline according to a few sources:

“The ability to make yourself do things when you should, even if you do not want to do them.” ( Cambridge Dictionary )

“Discipline and training of oneself, usually for improvement.” ( Dictionary.com )

“The ability to control one’s feelings and overcome one’s weaknesses; the ability to pursue what one thinks is right despite temptations to abandon it.” ( Oxford Dictionary )

“The ability to make yourself do things that should be done.” ( Merriam-Webster )

Common Themes Across Definitions

Although the definitions vary a bit, a few key themes emerge.

Self-discipline is about…

  • Controlling yourself
  • Making yourself do things
  • Self-improvement

The Meaning of Self-Discipline

Here is a definition which ties all these themes together:

Self-discipline is about learning to control yourself so you can work towards your goals, even when no one is forcing you to do so.

Why Self-Discipline Can Be Challenging

Why is it that self-discipline can be challenging for a lot of people?

Controlling Yourself is the Hard Part

The “controlling yourself” aspect is the big challenge.

You often know what you need to do to achieve a goal. (Or at least you have the capacity to learn the knowledge and skills which are required).

But despite knowing what you need to get done, consistently working towards your goals without procrastinating or getting distracted can be difficult.

Imagine if you were a character in a video game, and you were controlling yourself. Self-discipline wouldn’t be an issue.

You simply would click a button and you would do whatever you needed to get done.

  • Make your video game self take a programming course
  • Make your video game self apply for fancy tech jobs with super high salaries
  • Don’t let your video game self get discouraged and sit in pajamas all day re-watching all The Lord of the Rings movies
  • Make your video game self stick to a diet
  • Make your video game self exercise
  • Don’t let your video game self give up and binge on Doritos and ice cream until four in the morning

Just imagine how successful your actual self would be if you treated yourself the way you would treat your video game self?

The problem is, in real life, there are a few challenges that you don’t have in the video game scenario.

Real-Life Challenges to Being Self-Disciplined

  • Needing to mentally and/or physically exert yourself
  • Dealing with emotions , such as worry, doubt, or fear
  • Conflicting priorities that make it difficult to determine what to focus on
  • Having a vague sense of what you need to do, but not knowing the specific steps involved or how to get started
  • Being impacted by tough life events or going through bad ruts that make self-discipline even harder

These are enormous obstacles, but are possible to overcome.

11 Reasons Why Self-Discipline is Important

Although self-discipline can be hard, it is worth developing, because it is capable of transforming your life in monumental ways.

Here are 11 reasons why self-discipline is important to develop.

Why Self-Discipline is Important – Reason #1: Self-Discipline Helps You Achieve Your Goals

One of the biggest reasons to learn self-discipline, is that it will help you follow through with your goals.

Although there are some things you can get done without self-discipline, most goals require self-discipline to accomplish.

For most things in life, no one is going to be there to force you to follow through with those things every step of the way.

When you are a kid, you can get by without self-discipline because your parents and teachers tell you to do things.

But at some point, you need self-discipline to get things done.

The amazing thing about self-discipline, is once you build it, you can use it to accomplish any goal you want.

Whether that is:

  • Getting in better shape
  • Advancing your career
  • Forming stronger connections with people
  • Starting a business
  • Learning an instrument
  • Writing a book

Or whatever else you dream of doing.

Why Self-Discipline is Important – Reason #2: Self-Discipline Benefits Your Future Self

There is a theory called Present Bias which states that most of the time we do things to benefit our Present Selves, and we discount the effects our actions have on our Future Selves.

For example, you eat a cookie because it tastes good in the moment.

Even though you know that in the future too many cookies can negatively impact your health.

Self-discipline gives you the power of delayed gratification . Which means you can resist short-term rewards in favor of long-term benefits.

And the best thing about self-discipline is you don’t ALWAYS have to delay gratification.

Your Present Self matters too.

But self-discipline puts you in charge. So you have the ability to do things which are hard in the moment, but benefit your Future Self.

Why Self-Discipline is Important – Reason #3: Self-Discipline Involves Forming Good Habits

Habits can be extremely powerful.

Habits are about getting things so ingrained into your routine that you consistently do them without giving them a second thought.

A big part of self-discipline involves forming good habits that enable you to stick with your goals for the long-run.

Why Self-Discipline is Important – Reason #4: Self-Discipline Helps You Break Bad Habits

On the flip side of good habits, are bad habits.

Examples include:

  • Maintaining a bad sleep schedule
  • Wasting more time than you want to on the internet or social media
  • Eating too much junk food

Keep in mind, some bad habits are very personal and what is bad for one person might not be bad for another.

For example, I know people who spend large periods of the day playing video games and are perfectly happy.

But there are other people who want to reduce how much time they devote to video games , so they have more time for other stuff.

Whatever you consider you bad habits, self-discipline will help you control them – by either reducing the amount of time you spend on them or eliminating them entirely.

Side note, here are a few resources on how to break bad habits you may find helpful:

  • Moderating Behavior —> Using The Who What When Where Why Method : A full, in-depth guide on how to control bad habits, which you get if you signup for my newsletter (for free).
  • How to Cure Your Phone Addiction : Figure out how to BREAK your phone addiction using several POWERFUL strategies which have helped me cure my own phone addiction.

Why Self-Discipline is Important – Reason #5: Self-Discipline Helps You Stop Procrastinating

Another reason why self-discipline is important, is that it helps you stop procrastinating.

Procrastination is the act of putting something off that you need or want to get done.

Self-discipline helps you reduce the amount of time you spend procrastinating, and helps you get started with the things you have been postponing.

Side note – Here is an article with more information on how to stop procrastinating .

Why Self-Discipline is Important – Reason #6: The Spillover Effect

The Spillover Effect is the idea that sometimes progress in one area (even if really small) can lead to a series of exponential breakthroughs in other areas of your life.

This effect is really strong when it comes to self-discipline.

Since as you build self-discipline in one area of your life, you often start seeing positive changes in other areas of your life as well.

For example, I used to have zero self-discipline in all aspects of life. Work, school, exercise. You name it.

But I finally had a breakthrough when it came to working out.

Not only was that amazing in its own right, but once I found out how to be disciplined when it came to working out, it started becoming easier to get disciplined in OTHER areas of my life as well.

My discipline in exercise eventually led me to be more disciplined in a ton of other areas.

  • And finances

Plus, it boosted my confidence which helped my self-esteem and social life.

Sometimes all it takes is becoming self-disciplined in ONE area of your life to spark a SERIES of positive life changes.

Side note – If you are interested in more on exercise, check out my article on how to stick to a workout schedule .

Why Self-Discipline is Important – Reason #7: Self-Discipline Gives You Confidence

As you start to build self-discipline, you will start to gain confidence in yourself.

There are two reasons for this.

First, as you get more self-disciplined, you will start making progress towards your goals, which will give you a sense of accomplishment.

Second, you will start to create a positive feedback loop, which looks like this:

  • Achieving more goals —> Increased confidence
  • Increased confidence —> Achieving more goals
  • The initial goals you accomplish increase your confidence and belief in yourself.
  • Which make it easier to accomplish even more goals.
  • Which then leads to even more confidence.

Why Self-Discipline is Important – Reason #8: Self-Discipline Improves Your Time Management Skills

Time management is about regulating how much time you spend on specific goals or tasks, in order to accomplish your goals in the most efficient manner possible.

Learning self-discipline and time management go hand-in-hand, as a big part of self-discipline is figuring out how to manage your time effectively.

Self-discipline involves learning how to allocate your time to different goals, and how to execute them as efficiently and productively as you can.

Why Self-Discipline is Important – Reason #9: Self-Discipline Allows You to Follow Through with Your Great Ideas

Have you ever had a brilliant idea, but then never did anything with it?

We’ve all had those ideas we regret never following through on.

Self-discipline will help you make your ideas a reality.

I’m not saying they are going to all work out. But at the very least, with self-discipline, you will give them a shot.

For instance:

  • If you have a business idea, self-discipline will help you do what you need to do to start that business.
  • If you have an idea for a novel, self-discipline will help you write your story.

Whatever your great idea is, self-discipline will help you execute it – and not just keep telling yourself you are going to get to it “eventually.”

Why Self-Discipline is Important – Reason #10: Self-Discipline is Important Because it is Within Your Sphere of Influence

There are so many things in life which are outside of our control:

  • Where you are born
  • Who your family is
  • How tall or short you are

But self-discipline is one of the few things that is within your sphere of influence. And that makes it all the more important to develop.

Why Self-Discipline is Important – Reason #11: Self-Discipline Can Help You Find Your Sense of Purpose

As you build self-discipline, you will start making progress towards your goals.

And as you progress, some of those goals may send you in a direction you couldn’t have even imagined your life would go in.

You may discover a career you want to pursue. A hobby you are passionate about. Or even a person you fall in love with.

You don’t necessarily have to have one single sense of purpose.

But as self-discipline opens up new doors through a continued process of self-improvement and self-discovery, you may find layers of meaning somewhere along your journey.

Argumentative Essay: The Importance of Discipline

Discipline is something that we have all experienced personally in different forms, seen used on others, and is also something that many of us will go on to use later in life, both in the form of self-discipline and as something to keep children and even employees in check. It is essential to life as we know it, and we need it in its many different forms in many different situations.

The first reason that discipline is so important is that we all need to exercise self-discipline to be successful in life. Self-discipline can mean very different things to different people; for students, for example, self-discipline is often about motivating yourself and making yourself concentrate on your studies and get your assignments in on time. For working people, it can be as simple as getting up on time every morning, however tired you may be and how much you may hate your job, getting to work on time and doing your job. Without this kind of self-discipline, people would not be able to enjoy academic success, or be successful in their careers either.

Self-discipline is also required for dieters and anyone doing regular exercise, because given the chance, most of us would prefer to be lazy rather than get up and exercise, and eat burgers and fries rather than healthy food. Without it, even more people would be fat and unhealthy, and a lack of self-discipline in some people certainly contributes to the obesity crisis.

Discipline is also something that needs to be used on others where necessary. If parents didn’t discipline their children when they were naughty, children wouldn’t grow up knowing right from wrong, or be able to become productive members of society who contribute to the system. Equally, schoolteachers need to be able to dish out punishments to children who don’t behave themselves. Without discipline in the classroom, there would be a great deal of disruption and nobody would ever learn anything. Indeed, teachers who struggle to command the respect of students and who fail to use discipline effectively will often have trouble even making themselves heard in a classroom.

In the workplace, discipline is also essential to maintaining a hierarchy and dealing with employees who do not follow company policies and procedures, regularly arrive late or not at all, or treat their co-workers unfairly. Then, you have to consider that without discipline, there would be no law enforcement. Murderers would be roaming the streets and everybody would be stealing from each other, because there would be no consequences for their actions.

Discipline acts as a vital deterrent to stop children being naughty, people from missing work, and even potential criminals from stealing and killing, and for this reason it is vital in human society.

Essay on Self Discipline 1000+ Words

Self-discipline is like a superpower that can help us achieve our goals and dreams. It’s the ability to control ourselves, stay focused, and do what needs to be done, even when it’s hard or tempting to do otherwise. In this essay, we will explore the importance of self-discipline and how it can positively impact our lives.

Self-Discipline Builds Character

Self-discipline is not just about getting things done; it’s about building good character. When we practice self-discipline, we learn values like responsibility, determination, and perseverance. It’s like strengthening a muscle – the more we use it, the stronger it gets. According to a study by psychologists, people with strong self-discipline tend to be more honest, hardworking, and dependable.

Achieving Academic Success

In school, self-discipline is crucial for academic success. It means setting aside time to study, even when there are fun distractions. Research shows that students who practice self-discipline tend to get better grades and perform well in exams. For instance, a study conducted at a prestigious university found that students who consistently followed a study schedule achieved higher grades compared to those who didn’t.

Pursuing Personal Goals

Self-discipline is not limited to academics; it’s essential for achieving personal goals too. Whether it’s learning a musical instrument, excelling in a sport, or becoming a better artist, self-discipline plays a vital role. Look at the story of Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb. He said, “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration,” highlighting the importance of hard work and self-discipline in achieving great things.

Just what exactly is self discipline and how can it relate to students? Self discipline means regulating oneself and making corrections to one’s thoughts and behaviors in order to improve oneself.

For students, this can mean: keeping yourself focused on assignments or in classes, not getting yourself distracted during lectures or times of study and making sure that you’re on track with deadlines. This is especially important once you enter college, where you will need to rely on yourself and only yourself to meet your academic goals.

1. know your strengths and weaknesses.

Are you always avoiding essays but hit the ground running when it’s time for a lab assignment? If you can recognize what subjects or types of projects you enjoy and the ones you don’t, you can start to make strategies for self discipline.

Start by anticipating that you may have struggles through a specific class or project, and preemptively make plans to limit distractions, increase reward systems and schedule non-negotiable study times into your weekly agenda.

2. Know When You Are Motivated

If you are feeling great and jamming along to an assignment no problem, take a moment to notice what makes it easier for you and write that down. Is it your current music playlist? The time of day? The amazing breakfast you had time to eat because you woke up early?

Take notice of these factors that increase your motivation and productivity. Then, you can make plans to add these motivation factors to whenever or whatever you are studying!

3. Recognize Your Downfalls

When you find yourself getting distracted, make a note of the circumstances so that you can avoid the same pitfalls again.

For example, if your roommate always gets home in the early evening and you find yourself chatting away and losing focus, try not to schedule your study time for that hour. Or if you notice that skipping lunch has your head in a fog, make sure to eat at the proper time. Try to limit screen time distractions as well, or allow yourself a break, but set timers for your distraction times.

4. Stay Positive

If you feel yourself slipping, don’t lose hope! If you feel you are losing control of your actions and find yourself falling for the distractions again, instead of getting discouraged just take notes about it and challenge yourself to not let it happen again. Think positive and use your mistakes to your advantage! A positive mind and attitude go a long way towards your success as a student.

5. Get Support

A great way to stop study distractions is by starting or joining a study group, where the whole focus is getting assignments done or going over readings/lectures. You can also let your family members, friends, and housemates know when you’ll be studying so they won’t distract you.

Finally, use your technology to support you. You can set up calendars on your phone with deadlines and reminders. You can also set screen time limits for certain phone applications so that you don’t spend too much time on social media when you should be studying.

6. Get Better at Time Management

Great time management can help you limit procrastination and stress, achieve your goals, and make your free time more enjoyable because you won’t be worried about what else you could be getting done. Make it a point to improve your time management skills in order to increase your self discipline as a student.

They understand the importance of exercise and indulge in the same regularly. They have complete self-control and do not give in to temptations. They can very well control the urge to have junk food.

On the other hand, those who lack self-discipline procrastinate and avoid exercise. They do not have self-control and give in to temptations easily. They often end up eating junk food in large quantities only to regret later.

Correlation between Self Discipline and Healthy Eating Habits

Self-discipline helps in inculcating healthy eating habits. Healthy eating habits help in promoting self-discipline. The two are correlated. Success at Work

Procrastination is one of the biggest hindrances in achieving success at work. A self-disciplined person does not procrastinate. He practices self- control and concentrates on work instead of just whiling away time. He does not give in to distractions and temptations. He knows that work comes first and other things can wait. He does not hesitate to put his mobile phone aside as he sits to work.

He also resists the temptation of being a part of unnecessary office gossip. He indulges in productive tasks that can help him achieve success at work. He is particular about the deadlines as well as the quality of work. He completes and submits his work on time and ensures good quality.

A person who practices self-discipline does not waste much time viewing television or chit chatting on his mobile. He rather prefers reading a book or joining a part-time course to enhance his skills and knowledge. All this helps in moving up the success ladder.

Family Bonding

A person who practices self-discipline can maintain work- life balance. This is because he makes good use of his time. Working without any distractions helps in completing the tasks quickly. So, he can devote enough time to his family too. He also understands that when he is with his family, he does not just have to be present physically but also mentally.

Unlike, most people who are engrossed in their mobiles or television sets even as they sit with their close ones; a self-disciplined person puts these distractions aside. He focuses on one thing at a time. When he is with his family he makes sure he gives his undivided attention to them. Such a person is thus able to bond well with his family members. He builds happier and healthier relationships.

Time for Self

A self-disciplined person understands the importance of spending time with himself. He takes out time to practice meditation. This helps him connect with his inner self. It is possible to bond well with others and perform well at work only when one is connected to his inner self. It also helps in combating unnecessary stress and aids in making better decisions.

A self-disciplined person never procrastinates or hesitates when it comes to putting efforts to maintain good physical and mental health. He indulges in exercise regularly. He also eats healthy food and dons a positive attitude.

Everyone around us lays stress upon leading a life of discipline. We often hear about the benefits of self-discipline. ‘Ways to Inculcate Self Discipline’

Self-discipline comes naturally to some people while others can achieve it with some effort. The effort made is worth it as it changes life for the better. Self-discipline doesn’t mean one has to be too harsh towards himself/herself. It just means exercising self- control. A person who stays in control has the ability to take charge of his/her actions and reactions.

The below mentioned points can be helpful in inculcating self-discipline:

The first step towards leading a disciplined life is to set goals. Goals give you a clear idea about what needs to be achieved. You must always set a timeline for your goals. This serves as a driving force and motivates you to work hard. It is a good idea to set both short term and long term goals and create a well thought out plan to achieve them.

  • Get Rid of Distractions

In this technology- driven world, there are numerous things that can distract us and take charge of our lives. Our mobile phones, television, and chatting apps are some of the new age things that are a big hindrance in practicing self-discipline. No matter how determined we are to study, work or sleep on time, we tend to get distracted at the beep of our phone.

Social media platforms, chatting apps and web series are extremely addictive and hamper work. In order to practice self-discipline, it is important to stay away from these distractions. Put your phone on silent or keep it at a distance when you sit to study or work. Similarly, just put your phone away at bedtime and instead pick a book to read.

Meditation is one of the best ways to channel our energy in the right direction. It helps maintain focus, acquaints us with our inner self and furthers better self- control. It is the stepping stone for a disciplined life. Meditating for half an hour every day can help in inculcating self-discipline.

  • Keep a Check on Your Eating Habits

No matter how hard pressed you are to follow your to-do list and accomplish your goals, you may not be able to do so if you are not eating right. Oily, fried and sugary food can drain your energy and make you feel lethargic. Junk food is a hindrance to leading a disciplined life. It is important to eat healthy food to inculcate self-discipline.

  • Reward Yourself

Reward yourself for every goal you achieve. This will motivate you to work harder to achieve more. The reward can be anything from watching your favourite movie to going out with your friends. This is a good way to trick your brain to inculcate self-discipline.

  • Set a Routine

Those who set a routine and follow it daily lead a more disciplined life. It is suggested to list all the tasks that you require accomplishing in a given day. Write them in the order of their priority, set a timeline for each and act accordingly. This is a good way to lead an organized and disciplined life.

You can inculcate self-discipline only when you are well rested. So, it is essential to sleep for eight hours each night. Maintaining a good sleep cycle is also essential. This means that you should try sleeping and waking up at the same time each day. A power nap during the afternoon can help further.

  • Stay Positive

Many people want to inculcate self-discipline but are unable to because they somehow believe that it is difficult to achieve. They feel that it is too much to ask for and that they shall not be able to practice it. This is the wrong approach. You can achieve anything in life if you stay positive and believe in yourself. So, you should stay positive. It is a pre-requisite for inculcating self-discipline.

Achieving self-discipline may be difficult but it is important to lead a healthy personal and professional life. We must thus make some effort to achieve it. The above mentioned points can help in this direction.

  • How to Develop Self-Discipline to Succeed

Success starts with self-mastery, and at the core of this mastery is self-discipline.

Did you know the most successful people have gotten to where they are today because they have learned to practice self-discipline?

Becoming a self-disciplined person involves understanding what self-discipline means, learning the skills to develop it, and making a consistent effort to apply it in all areas of your life.

Many of the most successful individuals credit their achievements to their ability to practice self-discipline, which has significantly contributed to their well-being and success.

If you’re ready to take control of your actions and thoughts, let’s explore self-discipline together and set the stage for your greatness.

What Is Self-Discipline?

Let’s start with the basics.

The word self-discipline is actually made up of two parts. The noun “discipline” means “training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character” ( Merriam-Webster Dictionary ).

The ‘self’ means you have the willpower to do these things on your own, without someone telling you to do them.

So self-discipline means you control your feelings and even do hard things so you can be better and have more prosperity.

More than one self-discipline definition can help us understand the concept better, though. Consider these dictionary definitions:

  • Self-discipline is “the ability to control one’s feelings and overcome one’s weaknesses; the ability to pursue what one thinks is right despite temptations to abandon it.” Oxford Languages Dictionary
  • Self-discipline is “the ability to control yourself and to make yourself work hard or behave in a particular way without needing anyone else to tell you what to do.”  Collins Dictionary

You can also use different words in place of self-discipline to better understand their meaning. Some synonyms are:

  • Self-control
  • Self-regulation
  • Self-mastery
  • Firmness of purpose
  • Self-restraint

My favorite definition of self-discipline, though, is this: “ Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you should do when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not.”

To be completely truthful, it is easy to do something when you feel like it. However, it’s when you don’t feel like doing something and you force yourself to do it anyway is when you move your life and career onto the fast track.

Controlling our feelings in the moment so we can have something better later takes hard work. It involves delayed gratification, which is not acting on your impulses.

It is doing what you have to do now so you can do what you want to do later.

As psychologist Arden Mahlberg explains in one of his self-discipline quotes: “Discipline really means our ability to get ourselves to do things when we don’t want.”

Disciplining one’s conduct leads to success in anything you want to accomplish. Apply the principles of self-discipline to both your personal and professional life.

The Importance of Self-Discipline

Mastering the art of self-discipline is a gateway to numerous advantages. When you demonstrate regular self-discipline, you streamline and focus your path toward achieving your aspirations. This focused approach minimizes distractions and paves the way for substantial progress towards your goals.

Self-discipline is beneficial because it:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety , which often come from procrastination, wasting time, or not having a plan to follow.
  • Makes you feel more confident in your abilities to accomplish things , which leads to living a happier life to becoming your best self.
  • Accelerates personal improvement in all areas of our lives , including physical and mental health, education, career, financial independence , and relationships.
  • Helps students gain more knowledge , make fewer careless mistakes, and perform better than those who do not, regardless of IQ,
  • Can help those in the workplace achieve higher income , the feeling of achievement in one’s career, and a higher rate of accomplishing one’s goals.
  • Enhances relationships and is seen to correlate with stronger, more enduring personal relationships.
  • Fosters resilience, enhancing your ability to recover from setbacks and further strengthening your control over impulses.

Recognizing the Signs of a Self-Discipline Deficit

So how do you know if you lack self-discipline?

There are some self-sabotaging behaviors to look for. One sign is that you find yourself making excuses for your behavior and falling short on things.

For example, promptness requires self-discipline. If you are often late to appointments, work, or other commitments but blame it on traffic, hitting the alarm too many times, or staying up late to finish a project, you likely lack self-discipline. Instead, you should take personal responsibility for leaving earlier, getting up on time, or not procrastinating at the start of your project.

Another sign you need to build self-discipline is if you give in to temptation and just can’t seem to reach your goals. That could be eating too much so you cannot make your ideal weight or not advancing in your career because you give in to the temptation of spending some of your free time on social media instead of taking an online course.

One more sign that you need to improve your self-discipline is that you wait to feel motivated before doing something. For example, if you want to write a book and are waiting until the right moment when you feel energized to do it, you will probably never accomplish it.

The power of self-discipline gets you out of your comfort zone and lets you soar to new and unimaginable heights.

7 Steps to Develop Self-Discipline

When you have the determination to improve self-discipline, you open up many doors to new opportunities.

But it takes more than willpower to improve your ability to achieve self-discipline within yourself. You need to develop skills by learning and training yourself to practice self-control until self-discipline becomes a habit.

Follow these seven steps to success.

1. Decide What You Want

You have a lot of ideas floating around in your head. The first step to improving your future self-discipline is to organize your thoughts and figure out what you want.

As Napoleon Hill puts it in one of his self-discipline quotes:

“Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don’t control what you think, you can’t control what you do. Simply, self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward.”

Decide exactly what it is you want in each part of your life.

Do you need to increase your knowledge of the trends in your industry so you can advance to a higher position?

Do you want to adopt healthy habits like exercising and healthy eating so you feel better, improve your physical health, increase your self-confidence, and open yourself up to more opportunities?

Is learning a new language or skill something you want to do to open new doors professionally or personally?

Tap into your self-awareness and think about what you want to do and be. Become a “meaningful specific” rather than a “wandering generality.”

What decisions do you need to make today to start moving toward the top of your field?

Whatever it is, make a decision now, and then get started. This single act alone can change the whole direction of your life.

Understand that any new endeavor you take on will take effort and a willingness to delay gratification. But enduring temporary discomfort is always worth the reward of long-term gain.

2. Identify and Remove Temptations

Distractions are the enemy of accomplishment and discipline. Your ability to resist temptation will turn bad, unhealthy habits, into good habits.

One of the wisest things you can do to resist temptations is to simply remove temptations as much as possible.

If checking your social media feed has become a time-waster, reduce your screen time by setting limits on your smartphone, turning off notifications, scheduling specific times when you can check your accounts, or deleting the apps that do not contribute to your goals or overall well-being.

If you are easily distracted by how readily accessible entertainment is, remove things like television, video platforms, or subscription streaming services from your environment.

Do the same with tempting foods, people who are a negative influence, or anything else that is impeding your progress.

Your environment sets you up for success. Being honest with yourself about what those distractions are is key to your success.

Fewer distractions have a tremendous impact on accomplishing your goals.

Self-denial may seem difficult at first, but when one’s desires are tempered, it allows for blossoming into a newer and better version of oneself.

Conduct a time audit to identify your temptations and time wasters. Over the next several days, keep track of what you do all day. Writing it down will allow you to analyze how you spend your time and change it into how you want to spend your time.

Removing temptations is liberating.

As Harvey Dorfman, a mental skills coach, puts it, “Self-discipline is a form of freedom. Freedom from laziness and lethargy, freedom from the expectations and demands of others, freedom from weakness and fear — and doubt.”

3. Find an Accountability Partner

Sometimes it’s hard to stay disciplined when you’re working in silence.

Having someone to share your goals and keep you accountable can help keep you on track and motivated to stay disciplined.

An accountability partner can help you overcome the challenge of making the changes you need to restrain your impulses and make better decisions.

Setting a specific goal makes you 10% more likely to achieve it. But committing to someone else that you will do it increases your success rate by 65%, and making an appointment to report back to that person raises it even higher to 95%.

An accountability partner is someone with whom you agree to help each other stay on track toward achieving your goals.

In your effort to improve self-discipline, knowing that you need to report your actions to someone else will help you stay motivated, and you will do the same for them.

An ideal accountability partner is someone who is working toward similar goals as you. For example, if your goal is to start your own business, choose an accountability partner who shares the same entrepreneurial goal. In this way, you can learn together, brainstorm solutions, and share helpful insights on the training each other is receiving.

You should also choose someone who wants to be held accountable — a person as interested in building self-discipline as you are.

The right accountability partner is trustworthy and will keep your discussions confidential. They are kind and encouraging yet will also ask you difficult questions and give constructive criticism to help you stay on track.

Share your goals with your accountability partner, be honest about your progress, and stay connected regularly. Set daily, weekly, and monthly check-in appointments, and keep these sessions short and on-topic.

Communicate in a way both of you are comfortable with, such as email, text, phone calls, in-person meetings, or a combination of several modes of communication.

The positive reinforcement and encouragement you receive from your accountability partner — and in turn, give to them — can make all the difference in overcoming the roadblocks you have been experiencing and catapulting you toward making your hopes and dreams a reality.

4. Write Your Goals Down

Always think on paper — or an electronic device. A goal that is not in writing is not a goal at all. It is merely a wish and it has no energy behind it.

Write your goals down, clearly and in detail. The most successful goals are SMART goals : specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

Define your long-term goals, but then set small goals and work your way to bigger ones. Baby steps are easier to visualize and achieve. They help you overcome your challenges more effectively than focusing on broad goals that take time to reach.

Reaching your smaller goals will motivate you to continue on the road to progress.

If your goal is to eat healthier, for example, start by adding one new healthy food to your diet each week. You don’t have to eliminate all unhealthy food at once. Going slowly will help you stay motivated.

It takes a tremendous amount of willpower to make a total, sweeping change all at once. But making gains step by step will be training your mind to exercise self-control in manageable increments until it becomes a habit and you no longer have the desire to return to old ways.

Use these examples of SMART goals as inspiration to write down your own:

  • I will increase business sales from repeat customers by 5% by the end of the quarter by gathering contact information at the point of sale and following up with strategies that make them feel valued.
  • I will decrease the number of times I complain to once every other day by May 31st to improve my mental health by taking 10 seconds to think about my words before sharing them.
  • I will continue to lose weight by adding exercise to my morning routine by walking for 30 minutes before eating breakfast for the next three weeks.
  • I will learn to play the major chords on the guitar by my birthday by watching tutorial videos and practicing for 15 minutes per day.
  • I will improve my academic performance on class assessments by 10 percentage points by the mid-term exam by recording lectures, listening to them on my commute, and outlining notes from each lecture within two days of hearing them.

5. Make To-Do Lists

Keep yourself on track daily by making a to-do list of everything you can think of that you are going to have to do to accomplish your goal. This is one of the most important things you can do to help you be productive and feel happier.

Lists serve as visual reminders that you are on a path toward excellence. Checking off each task as you complete it provides instant motivation to keep moving forward.

When you think of new tasks and activities, write them on your list until your list is complete.

Revisit your goals regularly to make sure you are on track. If you need to change a word or sentence in your goal to make it more precise, relevant, or achievable, do so without compromising your progress. The key is to create and follow goals that will get you closer to the existence you want, never farther away.

At the end of each day, make your list for the next day. Small habits like this will keep your mind focused on taking the right actions toward exercising self-control.

Be sure to set deadlines for all of your goals and sub-goals. This will help you work hard and achieve results promptly.

6. Organize Your Lists

Organize your lists into a plan.

Decide what you will have to do first and what you will have to do second. Decide what is more important and what is less important. And then write out your plan on paper, the same way you would develop a blueprint to build your dream house.

Group the important tasks on your list into related items. This will help you save time and effort if you complete similar items in the same period. Your mind will be in tune and your workspace will be organized with what you need.

Avoid multitasking. While it may seem like you are busy doing more, multitasking actually serves as a distraction as you cannot devote the right amount of mental energy to a single task. Tackle one item at a time then move on to the next one.

The challenge of disciplining yourself will become easier as you develop purposeful routines like these.

7. Create an Action Plan

Do something every single day that moves you in the direction of your most important goal at the moment.

Develop the time management discipline of doing something 365 days each year that is moving you forward. You will be absolutely astonished at how much you accomplish when you utilize this formula every single day.

Internalize Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s inspiring words on taking action: “If you can’t fly, run. If you can’t run, walk. If you can’t walk, crawl, but by all means, keep moving.”

Action is imperative to progress.

Research shows that those who use an implementation intention plan are more successful in creating new habits and becoming more self-disciplined.

An implementation intention is an if-then strategy used in disciplining oneself to make the right decisions at the moment. You plan for what you will do when faced with a temptation or distraction.

To use this strategy, complete this sentence with words that apply to what you are trying to overcome:

“When X situation arises, I will respond with Y. ”

Using this plan forces you to be more self-disciplined and cultivate mental toughness.

To help you stay on top of your action plan, consider remembering or writing down one of my favorite quotes that relate to self-discipline:

“Mental toughness is many things and rather difficult to explain. Its qualities are sacrifice and self-denial. Also, most importantly, it is combined with a perfectly disciplined will that refuses to give in.” ( Vince Lombardi )

Speech on Self Discipline and Its Importance for Students in English

Self-Discipline, contrary to popular belief, is not a severe or limited behaviour or a restrictive lifestyle. In its most basic form, Self-Discipline is the ability to do what needs to be done even when you don't want to. Self-Discipline is required at all times, whether you are happy or sad. It's just that when you're feeling good, happy, and motivated, you don't have to work as hard to maintain your self-control.

In today's fast-paced world, Self-Discipline is crucial for success. With rising distractions and reducing attention spans, it is very easy to be left behind in a world that operates at a neck-breaking pace. Self-Discipline forms a routine that manages time and resources efficiently. This leads to conservation of energy and free time needed to unwind in your busy lifestyles.

Without discipline in your life, you can be pushed to the brink that might leave you exhausted, helpless, and stressed. This is completely avoidable by taking a few small steps on a regular basis towards an organized lifestyle. Self-Discipline helps you achieve that and all your other goals in life. You must cultivate the habit to feel responsible for all your actions. With discipline in your lifestyle, you are taking charge of your decisions and empowering yourself with more confidence.

For students in school and students about to enter their college life, Self-Discipline is key. Currently, the students are in a protected environment nurtured by the care of parents and the guidance of teachers. But the world waiting for students outside the schools and colleges, tests everyone's mental and physical stamina, even grown-ups of all ages. Hence, Vedantu has provided both long and short ‘Self-Discipline and its importance’ speech for students of Class 1 to 12.

Long and Short Self-Discipline and its Importance Speech

Today, I am here to deliver a speech on Self-Discipline and its importance. Self-Discipline is one of the most important steps in becoming a better person.  Many people believe that Self-Discipline is only important for those who want to pursue a career in academia and become doctors or scientists, but this is not true.

Self-Discipline is important for everyone. If you are creative and want to be a singer, dancer, actor, or painter, or if you want to go into any field, you must be Self-Disciplined. Self-Discipline is essential for both those at home and those at work.

Our mother gets up early in the morning and prepares breakfast for us, as well as packs our lunch, bags, bottles, and so on. When we get home, she feeds us, cleans our uniforms, and prepares them; she also assists us with our homework and prepares our dinner. She is able to accomplish all of this because she is also Self-Disciplined. Indeed, it teaches us to love and care for both ourselves and others.

Self-Discipline, on the other hand, is important for everyone and at every stage of life; it can be learned at an early age. Because the young mind is fresh and eager to learn, anything taught at this age becomes a habit for people later on.

Many children, on the other hand, dislike being given instructions because they believe they are being forced to do so.

As a result, parents and teachers must exercise extreme caution when instilling the habit of Self-Discipline in children. They should be taught the benefits and significance of Self-Discipline in someone's life through examples.

Children and young adults are drawn to actors, singers, players, and so on. Instructors can use examples of famous figures, players, actors, dancers, and so on to persuade students that their dream of becoming famous requires rigorous training and practice. And even when they become popular, they maintain their Self-Discipline and focus.

Students who want to pursue sports as a career must be Self-Disciplined because only then will they be able to succeed.

Some very common expectations from such students include waking up early, exercising regularly, eating healthy and on time, drinking enough milk and juice, drinking water, and so on. These practices are impossible to achieve if no one is Self-Disciplined in life.

Self-Discipline is also important because it allows people to control their emotions and become more practical in life because such people are more centered in life.

It is also significant in life because it provides individuals with the proper approach and attitude toward life and aids in the fulfillment of someone's decision through thick and thin. Self-Disciplined people do not have mental fluctuations, and they achieve their goals in a long time.

Self-Discipline essentially helps to strengthen your inner strength, eliminates weakness, laziness, procrastination, and addictions, and instead helps you stay fit, timed, and energetic.

Everyone needs the Self-Discipline to lead a happy, stress-free life.

Short Speech on Self-Discipline and its Importance

Today, I am here to deliver a short speech on Self-Discipline and its importance. The ability to control one's own behavior, habits, and etiquette is referred to as Self-Discipline. It is significant in someone's life because it assists in overcoming weaknesses and living a useful life.

Self-Discipline is required to help you live a successful and fruitful life. Discipline can be imposed from without, whereas Self-Discipline is the determination to remain disciplined. Discipline, no matter how difficult it may appear, is an important part of our lives because it is required at any age.

Discipline is not only imposed on children; being an adult is also important for being Self-Disciplined; whether it is at home, the office, the playground, the gym, or anywhere else for that matter, it teaches us to respect the times and times of our time. Self-Discipline is also necessary for living a healthy life because we must eat and drink on time.

When children are young, they are expected to explain everything, such as brushing, bathing, hand washing, eating, doing homework, and so on. However, as they grow older, they begin to do all of these things on their own, which is referred to as Self-Discipline. Discipline aids in distinguishing between what is right and wrong and instills in people a sense of responsibility.

Self-Discipline comes naturally to some people. And with a little effort, some people can do it. The effort is worthwhile because it improves people's lives. It simply means exercising self-control. A person who maintains control is able to control his or her actions and reactions.

Self-Discipline is practiced by some of the world's most powerful people. They claim that one of the main reasons they have attained high status is due to Self-Discipline. They didn't start out high, but they made the most of what they had and rose through the ranks.

Failure, defeat, ruined relationships, health issues, obesity, and thus unhappiness can all result from a lack of Self-Discipline. Self-Discipline will motivate you to select and then commit to the thoughts, actions, and attitudes that contribute to success and progress. It will also provide you with the ability and inner strength to overcome life's addictions, laziness, and procrastination, which are major roadblocks in one's life.

10 Lines on Self-Discipline and its Importance Speech

Discipline means living life with proper rules and regulations.

It includes rules, regulations, manners, and etiquettes that shape our lives.

Discipline in life aids in the improvement of our habits and personalities.

Discipline guides us to follow the right principles and achieve success in our lives.

It is also believed that in order to be a good citizen of the country, one must live a disciplined life.

It promotes self-esteem and self-control in our lives.

Getting up early, exercising, eating healthy foods, and avoiding bad habits are all aspects of living a disciplined life.

Eating habits that are disciplined also help us to stay fit and healthy.

The principle is to respect others and to be obedient.

The first type of discipline is "Induced Discipline," which we learn from other people's indiscipline. The second is “Self-Discipline,” which is generated in our own minds and assists us in controlling our behavior.

We can conclude that discipline is an essential part of everyone's life. To be a good and ideal citizen, as well as a good human being, we must cultivate discipline in our lives. Self-Discipline may be difficult to achieve, but it is critical for leading a healthy personal and professional life. A Self-Disciplined person makes the best use of his or her time. As a result, he can accomplish more and do more work than someone who is not Self-Disciplined.

In times of social media taking over the lives of students as well as adults, Self-Discipline is the need of the hour. Mindless scrolling on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook has reduced the student's attention span drastically.

Reduction in attention span leads to more difficulty in focusing on due tasks. Performance goes down due to the fact that students are getting easily distracted. It's becoming more difficult to finish studying and working in one go without feeling the urge to look at a phone screen.

Therefore, Self-Discipline acts as a friend in need and a systematic push to help students keep distractions, boredom, and laziness at bay. It instills commitment in the students' minds to remain concentrated on their goal until they achieve it. This builds a sense of self-validation of emerging victorious in their daily battles.

Overcoming your demons like lethargy, distorted focus and mood swings with Self-Discipline in this age of social media is a rewarding feeling. It is vital to multitask easily without feeling burnt out, finish work before the deadlines and enjoy free time with loved ones.

Self-Discipline builds character that helps lead a well-balanced, rejuvenating lifestyle.

FAQs on Speech on Self Discipline and Its Importance

1. Do you need the Self-Discipline to do well in creative careers?

Most people with successful careers in creative fields were not born artists. In fact, many artists lead a very Self-Disciplined life from a very young age. Crafting one’s art form, mastering the craft and honing his or her skills with changing trends requires regular practice.

Without Self-Discipline, the dedication required to practice daily cannot be attained.

2. How to Develop Self-Discipline in life?

The following are a starter towards becoming Self-Disciplined:

Be self-aware to form a plan that uses your strengths to overcome your weaknesses.

Avoid distractions at any cost with willpower and by rewarding yourself if you are able to resist temptations.

Prioritize your goals and channel all your thoughts, energies and actions towards accomplishing them.

Get a trusted guardian, mentor or even friend involved in your growth process who can motivate you.

Use realistic targets, efficient deadlines, To-Do lists and well-planned schedules to achieve tasks.

3. How to get Self-Disciplined to fight social media addiction?

The following ways are instrumental to curb social media addiction with Self-Discipline and willpower:

Develop an ‘out sight, out of mind’ thought process by keeping your phone away

Turn off the notifications to prevent getting distracted by the beeping sounds

Keep aside multiple hours of your day for ‘Digital Detox’

Download apps that restrict access to social media if the daily screen time is crossed

Mark your work table or study room as a ‘No Phone Zone’

4. Is maintaining Self-Discipline tough?

Many people wrongly believe Self-Discipline to be tough to maintain. This mindset is deceiving. It’s not tough to be Self-Disciplined in the long run. It’s tough to not favor short-term gains over long-term gains.

This is because one tends to feel that it’s tiring and unfair that the present self is working hard whereas the future self is gaining the benefits. This isn’t true. One must realize that long-term benefits are more important than short-lived gains.

5. Can one stop being Self-Disciplined after becoming successful?

Self-Discipline is not just the key to achieving success, but also the key to preventing a downfall after success. It is imperative to continue to be disciplined even after reaching the peak as relieved nerves may lead to a laid-back attitude. This can undo years of hard work, patience, and perseverance. Therefore, Self-Discipline not only helps prevent failure but also grows manifolds to even more fulfilling forms of success.

The Most Important Thing I Teach My Students Isn’t on the Syllabus

what is the self discipline essay

By Frank Bruni

Mr. Bruni is a contributing Opinion writer and the author of the forthcoming book “The Age of Grievance,” from which this essay is adapted.

I warn my students. At the start of every semester, on the first day of every course, I confess to certain passions and quirks and tell them to be ready: I’m a stickler for correct grammar, spelling and the like, so if they don’t have it in them to care about and patrol for such errors, they probably won’t end up with the grade they’re after. I want to hear everyone’s voice — I tell them that, too — but I don’t want to hear anybody’s voice so often and so loudly that the other voices don’t have a chance.

And I’m going to repeat one phrase more often than any other: “It’s complicated.” They’ll become familiar with that. They may even become bored with it. I’ll sometimes say it when we’re discussing the roots and branches of a social ill, the motivations of public (and private) actors and a whole lot else, and that’s because I’m standing before them not as an ambassador of certainty or a font of unassailable verities but as an emissary of doubt. I want to give them intelligent questions, not final answers. I want to teach them how much they have to learn — and how much they will always have to learn.

I’d been on the faculty of Duke University and delivering that spiel for more than two years before I realized that each component of it was about the same quality: humility. The grammar-and-spelling bit was about surrendering to an established and easily understood way of doing things that eschewed wild individualism in favor of a common mode of communication. It showed respect for tradition, which is a force that binds us, a folding of the self into a greater whole. The voices bit — well, that’s obvious. It’s a reminder that we share the stages of our communities, our countries, our worlds, with many other actors and should conduct ourselves in a manner that recognizes this fact. And “it’s complicated” is a bulwark against arrogance, absolutism, purity, zeal.

I’d also been delivering that spiel for more than two years before I realized that humility is the antidote to grievance.

We live in an era defined and overwhelmed by grievance — by too many Americans’ obsession with how they’ve been wronged and their insistence on wallowing in ire. This anger reflects a pessimism that previous generations didn’t feel. The ascent of identity politics and the influence of social media, it turned out, were better at inflaming us than uniting us. They promote a self-obsession at odds with community, civility, comity and compromise. It’s a problem of humility.

The Jan. 6 insurrectionists were delusional, frenzied, savage. But above all, they were unhumble. They decided that they held the truth, no matter all the evidence to the contrary. They couldn’t accept that their preference for one presidential candidate over another could possibly put them in the minority — or perhaps a few of them just reasoned that if it did, then everybody else was too misguided to matter. They elevated how they viewed the world and what they wanted over tradition, institutional stability, law, order.

It’s no accident that they were acting in the service of Donald Trump, whose pitch to Americans from the very start was a strikingly — even shockingly — unhumble one. “I alone can fix it,” he proclaimed in his 2016 speech accepting the Republican Party’s nomination for president; and at his inauguration in January of the following year, the word “humbled,” which had been present in the first inaugural remarks of both Barack Obama and George W. Bush, was nowhere to be found. Nor were any of its variants. That whole sentiment and politesse were missing, as they had been during a campaign centered on his supposed omniscience.

There are now mini-Trumps aplenty in American politics, but anti-Trumps will be our salvation, and I say that not along partisan or ideological lines. I’m talking about character and how a society holds itself together. It does that with concern for the common good, with respect for the institutions and procedures that protect that and with political leaders who ideally embody those traits or at least promote them.

Those leaders exist. When Charlie Baker, a former Massachusetts governor, was enjoying enormous favor and lofty approval ratings as a Republican in a predominantly Democratic state, he was also stressing the importance of humility. He was fond of quoting Philippians 2:3, which he invoked as a lodestar for his administration. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit,” it says. “Rather, in humility value others above yourself.”

That’s great practical advice for anyone in government, where most meaningful success hinges on teamwork and significant progress requires consensus. Governing, as opposed to demagoguery, is about earning others’ trust and cooperation. Exhibiting a willingness to listen to and to hear them goes a long way toward that.

“Insight and knowledge come from curiosity and humility,” Mr. Baker wrote in a 2022 book, “Results,” coauthored with his chief of staff, Steve Kadish, a Democrat. “Snap judgments — about people or ideas — are fueled by arrogance and conceit. They create blind spots and missed opportunities. Good ideas and interesting ways to accomplish goals in public life exist all over the place if you have the will, the curiosity, and the humility to find them.”

Humble politicians don’t insist on one-size-fits-all answers when those aren’t necessary as a matter of basic rights and fundamental justice. Humble activists don’t either. The campaign for same-sex marriage — one of the most successful social movements of recent decades — showed that progress can be made not by shaming people, not by telling them how awful they are, but by suggesting how much better they could be. Marriage-equality advocates emphasized a brighter future that they wanted to create, not an ugly past that they wanted to litigate. They also wisely assured Americans that gay and lesbian people weren’t trying to explode a cherished institution and upend a system of values, but instead wanted in.

“I don’t want to disparage shouting and demands — everything has its place,” Evan Wolfson, the founder of the pivotal advocacy group Freedom to Marry, told me when we revisited the movement’s philosophy and tactics. At times, he acknowledged, champions of a cause “need to break the silence, we need to push, we need to force.”

“But I used to say, ‘Yes, there’s demanding, but there’s also asking,’” he recalled. “And one is not the enemy of the other. People don’t like being accused, people don’t like being condemned, people don’t like being alienated. It’s a matter of conversation and persuasion.”

That’s consistent with the message delivered by Loretta Ross, a longtime racial justice and human rights advocate, through her teaching, public speaking and writing. Troubled by the frequent targeting and pillorying of people on social media, she urged the practice of calling in rather than calling out those who’ve upset you. “Call-outs make people fearful of being targeted,” she wrote in a guest essay for Times Opinion . “People avoid meaningful conversations when hypervigilant perfectionists point out apparent mistakes, feeding the cannibalistic maw of the cancel culture.” Instead, she advised, engage them. If you believe they need enlightenment, try that route, “without the self-indulgence of drama,” she wrote.

She was preaching humility.

She was also recognizing other people’s right to disagree — to live differently, to talk differently. Pluralism is as much about that as it is about a multiracial, multifaith, multigender splendor. That doesn’t mean a surrender or even a compromise of principles; a person can hold on to those while practicing tolerance, which has been supplanted by grievance. Tolerance shares DNA with respect. It recognizes that other people have rights and inherent value even when we disagree vehemently with them.

We all carry wounds, and some of us carry wounds much graver than others. We confront obstacles, including unjust and senseless ones. We must tend to those wounds. We must push hard at those obstacles. But we mustn’t treat every wound, every obstacle, as some cosmic outrage or mortal danger. We mustn’t lose sight of the struggle, imperfection and randomness of life. We mustn’t overstate our vulnerability and exaggerate our due.

While grievance blows our concerns out of proportion, humility puts them in perspective. While grievance reduces the people with whom we disagree to caricature, humility acknowledges that they’re every bit as complex as we are — with as much of a stake in creating a more perfect union.

SEATTLE (AP) — A former Washington state police officer wanted after killing two people, including his ex-wife, was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a chase in Oregon, authorities said Tuesday. His 1-year-old baby, who was with him, was taken safely into custody by Oregon State Police troopers.

The troopers began chasing the ex-Yakima officer, Elias Huizar, when they saw him driving southbound on Interstate 5 near Eugene, Oregon, at about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Oregon State Police Capt. Kyle Kennedy said at a media briefing Tuesday evening that Huizar fled after a trooper tried to pull over his vehicle.

Troopers pursued Huizar’s vehicle at high speeds and at one point exchanged gunfire with him, according to Kennedy. The pursuit, over about 25 miles (40 kilometers), ended when Huizar’s vehicle hit a commercial vehicle that was stopped on the interstate because of an unrelated crash.

Huizar’s vehicle spun and became immobile in the median, and when troopers tried to make contact with him, he shot himself and died at the scene, Kennedy said. The 1-year-old was uninjured and removed from the vehicle, Kennedy said.

He additionally said he didn’t believe anyone was hurt during the exchange of gunfire with police.

“All day our thoughts have been how to rescue this young boy and we’re thankful for the outcome that occurred,” Kennedy said.

Huizar went on the run Monday afternoon after killing two people, including his ex-wife, Amber Rodriguez, 31, whom he shot eight times outside a West Richland elementary school in front of their 9-year-old son and other witnesses, police said. Rodriguez had recently obtained a protection order against Huizar.

Rodriguez worked at the school, while Huizar had recently worked as a substitute teacher in the Richland School District, the district confirmed in a Facebook post Tuesday.

Police did not identify the other victim, whose body was found later Monday at Huizar’s house, except to say she was Huizar’s girlfriend.

According to court records, Huizar, 39, had at least until early this year been living with a 17-year-old girl whom he met when she was 11 and he was a middle school resource officer in Yakima. He impregnated her when she was 15; their baby recently turned 1, Rodriguez wrote in seeking a protection order against Huizar.

The Yakima Police Department said in a Facebook post Tuesday that Huizar left the department in 2021 “after receiving discipline.” It did not provide any other information.

In February, the 17-year-old girl reported to police that Huizar sexually assaulted a 16-year-old friend, who had passed out at their house. Huizar was charged with rape of both the teen and her friend. He was out on bail pending trial, authorities said.

Rodriguez wrote in her petition for a protection order that her divorce from Huizar became final last year and that she had not been aware that he was having a relationship with the same teen he had met as a resource officer until he was charged with rape.

She said she feared for the safety of her children and that she would be seeking a modification of their parenting plan. She filed for the modification last Friday, court records show. The protection order was issued in February and was to remain in effect for a year; under it, Huizar was barred from possessing firearms.

The Richland School District said it terminated Huizar’s employment following his arrest in February. It said it had received recommendations from the Yakima School District before hiring him in 2022, and that he had passed background checks.

“We are extremely disheartened that information about Mr. Huizar’s past was not disclosed to us through the various processes we have in place to vet RSD candidates for employment,” the district said. “It is the expectation for individuals who apply for employment with RSD to be forthcoming and truthful in their applications.”

Thiessen reported from Anchorage, Alaska. AP reporter Lisa Baumann contributed from Bellingham, Washington.

‘Self Discipline: Important for a Healthy Life’

Self-discipline is a skill that can be achieved with practice and patience. If one is determined to inculcate self-discipline, he can do it with some effort. It may seem difficult initially and one may be tempted to quit but the key is to try a little harder and achieve it. Self-discipline is important to lead a healthy life.

Self Discipline Furthers Healthy Habits

Many people understand and acknowledge the importance of self-discipline but are not ready to make efforts to achieve it. Some try and give up too early. Others feel it is overrated and does not make any effort to achieve it. Self-discipline is very important. It would not be wrong to say that self-discipline promotes good health.

People who lead a disciplined life make sure they sleep on time each day and have adequate sleep. They wake up fresh and can take better charge of their day.

A person who is self-disciplined understands the importance of eating healthy and has enough self- control to let go of the urge to eat junk food. So, self-discipline helps in inculcating healthy eating habits that in turn aids in keeping fit.

Likewise, a person who eats healthy food is able to take better charge of his day and feel in control. He stays energized throughout the day and stands a better chance to accomplish his goals. On the other hand, someone who consumes oily and sugary food feels lethargic and out of control. He feels too low on energy and even as he wants to accomplish his goals he is too tired to do so.

Self-discipline is essential for leading a healthy life. People struggling to quit addictions such as smoking and drinking should try to practice self-discipline. This will give them the power to take control of their life and get rid of these habits.

‘Self Discipline Promotes Wholesome Living’

Self-discipline is essential for leading a wholesome life. A person who imbibes this quality enhances his chances of success at work. He also leads a more fulfilling personal life. This quality is rare but essential.

But unfortunately, no one teaches us how to inculcate self-discipline and lead a disciplined life. There should be an exclusive period in schools where students should be taught how to imbibe self-discipline to lead a better life. Likewise, parents must also help their kids attain self-discipline.

Long Essay on Self Discipline and its Importance (600 Words) – Essay 5
