School Life is the best time of our life as we make new friends, learn new things and build our career there. School time is the only time which we enjoy most, and when we enter college, we always miss our school life. School life teaches us lots of new things and prepares us to face all the challenges of life. I love my school life and really enjoy it. I have lots of friends, and all my teachers love me. I love my school and enjoy going there every day to meet my friends and learn new things. 

Everyone keeps on saying that school life is the best time of your life. When listening to these phrases from their elders, the school students think about what is good about this life. All we do in the entire day is to attend the classes and to do the homework. But once school life gets over, the students realise that school life was the best time of their life.

Apart from learning great things in school, you make new friends, play different sports and create memories for the rest of your life. The students also learn many life skills like teamwork, good manners, etc., and understand what they want to become in their life.

About My School and School Life

I study in the reputed private school in my city, and I am glad to be a student of this school. My school is one of the most renowned schools in my town. It is very beautiful and huge. My school has all the facilities for sports, study and other activities. Built-in a three-storey building, it is a Co-Ed and Senior Secondary School having Science, Arts and Commerce stream. The atmosphere at my school is delightful. We have a huge playing ground where we all students play different games like Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, etc. We have a separate Basketball and Tennis court, as well as a small and beautiful garden for kids.

The students practice these sports every day. The school also has a big swimming pool and sports area for indoor games. In this area, the students can play Table Tennis and Chess. There is also a big skating rink. Different physical training teachers train us for all these sports. These sports not only keep us fit but also increase our stamina and coordination.

School life is not just limited to studies and sports. There are also other activity rooms such as the music room, art room, and dance room. The Art room is a big hall with lots of colourful charts and various types of paints. The students can portray their imagination and can create beautiful art here. Dance and music are also very important in school life as they help the students express themselves in a new manner. The different movements in dance help the students in unwinding themselves.

My school has a big library where we all read different kinds of books, novels and comics. Apart from the library, my school has well-equipped scientific labs where we all practise various experiments of Chemistry, Physics and Biology. I have learned a lot of things in these labs. My school also has a big computer lab with trained technical staff that help us to learn everything about computers. I love playing on the computer and learning new things in the computer lab. In the computer lab, the students learn about using MS Word and PowerPoint. The computer lab is also called the ICT lab. The ICT teacher teaches the students about the internet and how to use it safely.

All the staff at my school are very polite, educated and experienced. Our teachers not only teach us but also prepare us for various competitions, and every year, my school wins many prizes in various competitions. I have even represented my school in a hockey championship and scored the second position.

The classrooms are big and decorated beautifully with different artwork done by the students. Various projects and models are kept in the classroom for the students to keep on revising their concepts. The teachers use smartboards, and every day a new word is taught to enhance the students’ vocabulary. Every day one student presents the ‘Thought for the Day’. These positive thoughts keep us motivated.

All the teachers at my school are very dedicated and punctual. They always teach us discipline and ask us to come to school on time. Our teachers love us, and they teach us in a very simple and easy way. Whenever we fail to understand anything, they try to make us understand it again without shouting at us. They give equal attention to all the students, and that is why my school has an excellent academic record. 

The teachers are well qualified. They use different techniques to teach us the concepts. The atmosphere in the school is fun-filled and fruitful at the same time. The school’s entire staff, from the security guard to the teachers, is very helpful and polite.

We learn many life skills also in school. Discipline, hard work, and punctuality are some of them. During sports classes, we learn teamwork and work together to win.

The best part of my school is its auditorium where all the school events and competitions take place. Our school auditorium is one of the best auditoriums in the town with a great sound and light facility. It is fully air-conditioned with lots of seats. Every year, my school organises an annual cultural festival which lasts for two days. Many cultural events take place within these two days like singing, dancing, debate competition, etc. I love to participate in a poem writing competition every year, and many times I have won prizes as well. Every year, the toppers of our school get awarded on this annual cultural day and we all students love to participate in various events of the annual cultural day.

We also have school assemblies in our Auditorium. Sometimes the students from other schools come and participate in the different competitions organised in our schools. These events are called inter-school competitions. These events are very good as we get to learn new things from other students and make many new friends.

Apart from the annual cultural day, my school is famous for organising one of the biggest annual sports meets. I love this annual sports meet because sports are my favourite. In this annual sports meet, various sports competitions are organised, and almost 50 schools participate in these competitions and win multiple titles. Me, my friends, and our seniors also participate in these competitions and make our school proud by winning in them. My school has great teachers, excellent faculty and all the facilities that one student needs to excel in his/her life.

The biggest reason behind the success and fame of my school is our Principal Sir. He is 50 years old, yet very active and disciplined. He has an attractive personality, and his knowledge is commendable. He loves all the students and always spare some time from his busy schedule to monitor the progress of all the students. I admire his personality and principles. He always encourages us to take part in various extracurricular activities, and it is the result of his support & dedication that the students of my school always perform better in all the competitions. We all are fortunate to have him as our Principal.

Principal sir awards the students who participate and win in different cultural and sports events. He has a good memory and remembers the name of every child. The students feel proud when Principal sir calls them by their names.

After each term, assessments are also being conducted in the school. The teachers prepare us for these assessments, and the results are also shared with the parents. The assessment is a good system as students understand the learning gaps and can work on them. The teachers are very helpful as they assist the students wherever it is required.

I love my school and my school life. Every day I learn new things here and enjoy it with my friends. All my teachers love me and always support me. I have learned discipline and punctuality from my teachers, and it will help me a lot in my future. I am proud to be a student at this school, and I will always miss my school after leaving it. My school life has taught me many things and given me some best friends who will be my friends forever. I wish all the success to my school and love everything about my school life. 

The different experiences which the students get in school life help them to become better human beings. When they leave school, they are not just taking the memories with them, but they take many friends, a career and good manners for life. It is the first place where the students come out of their family circles and create a new one with their teachers and friends. 

One should also remember that everyone is not privileged enough to get an education. If one gets this opportunity, then be grateful and work towards being a better human being. Cherish your school life and stay motivated.

It was a cloudy day when I took my first step into the compound of my school. I was carrying a new backpack that was filled with notebooks. Though the backpack was a bit heavy, instead of focusing on the weight, I was excited about the beginning of my journey on my first day in school.

My classroom was at the end of the corridor. As I entered my classroom, my class teacher introduced me to the class and made me feel welcome. Activities like reading, solving problems in groups, and sharing our lunch boxes slowly and steadily transformed the new student with a sense of belonging.

The whole day progressed with mixed excitement as well as emotions. As the bell rang, declaring the end of the school day, the school felt like a world of possibilities where the journey was more than textbooks.

It was a sunny day and the sun was shining brightly. With my new and attractive backpack, I was moving through the school gate. It was my first day in school and I was filled with nervousness and excitement. From the tower of the building to the playground everything was bigger than life. The corridor was filled with the echo of students. As I entered the classroom, wearing a mix of curiosity and excitement, my classmates and class teacher welcomed me with a warm smile. My first day in school started by stepping onto the school bus with a bag full of books and a heart full of curiosity. It was like I was starting a new chapter in my life. After travelling a long way back, I stepped at the gate of my school. The school gate welcomed me with open arms and greeted me with a sense of excitement as well as nervousness.

As I entered the classroom, I found many new faces. Arranging my stuff on the seat, I sat next to an unknown, who later on turned into the best friend of my life. I entered my class with a welcoming smile, and later on, I turned everything in with ease. During our lunchtime, the cafeteria was filled with the energy of students. 

At first, I hesitated to interact with the children, but later on, I was a part of a group that invited me to join the table. At lunchtime, I made many new friends and was no longer a stranger. After having delicious food and chit-chatting with friends, we get back to our respective classrooms. Different subjects such as mathematics, science, and English never left the same impact as they did on the first day of school. 

The teacher taught the lessons so interestingly that we learned the chapter with a mix of laughter and learning. At the end of the day, we all went straight to the playground and enjoyed the swings. Moreover, in the playground, I also met many faces who were new to the school and had their first day in school, like me.

While returning home, I realised that my first day was not just about learning new subjects; it was about making new friends, sailing into new vibrant classrooms, and settling myself as a new student. The morning, which was full of uncertainty at the end of the day, came to an end with exciting adventures and endless possibilities. With new experiences, I look forward to new academic and personal growth in the wonderful world of education.

Introduction: Childhood days are very special to every person. A human child is born in a very helpless and weak form. Parents raise the child with utmost care and unconditional love. The School: I was admitted to school at the age of five. The school was a very short distance from our house. I clearly remember my first day at school. I got up early in the morning, put on a white shirt and blue pants, and went to school with my father. In school, I met my teachers and classmates. My classmates were friendly and nice to me. My teachers also loved me very much.

Market and Park: Sometimes my parents took me to the market. At the market, they bought me dresses, chocolates, toys, balls, and other necessary items. They also took me to parks. We had a merry-go-round and other kinds of rides in the parks.

George Orwell's schooldays

T here are two St Cyprians. One is a martyr of the early church – a third-century bishop of Carthage who was put to death in AD258 by a proconsul of the emperor Valerian after refusing to pay obeisance to the pagan gods. The other, now regarded by scholars as a mythological figure and expunged from the Vatican's martyrology, was Saint Cyprian of Antioch. According to legend, he was a pagan sorcerer who converted to Christianity but secretly carried on with his magical practices. He is regarded as the patron saint of necromancers.

We can safely assume that it was the first Saint Cyprian – patron saint of North Africa, by the way – after whom the Eastbourne prep school the young Eric Blair attended was named. But from his account of his time there before and during the first world war – published many years later when he was better known as George Orwell – you'd be forgiven for imagining that it was the second saint.

The title of the long essay " Such, Such Were the Joys " – taken from Blake's rhapsodic Song of Innocence "On the Echoing Green" – is bitterly ironic. Orwell hated his time at prep school – or, at least, seemed to have decided that he hated it by the time he came to recall it in print. "Whoever writes about his childhood," he says, "must beware of exaggeration and self-pity. I do not claim that I was a martyr, or that St Cyprian's was a sort of Dotheboys Hall ." Disclaimer issued, he does exactly that, in a performance of grotesque literary effectiveness.

To think of his schooldays is, he says, "to breathe in a whiff of something cold and evil-smelling – a sort of compound of sweaty stockings, dirty towels, faecal smells blowing along corridors, forks with old food between the prongs, neck-of-mutton stew, and the banging doors of the lavatories and the echoing chamber-pots in the dormitories".

St Cyprian's, Orwell writes, was "an expensive and snobbish school which was in process of becoming more snobbish, and, I imagine, more expensive". Its horrible headmaster Mr Wilkes and his still more horrible wife – they were nicknamed "Sambo" and "Flip" – presided over the school like cruel gods, fawning over the richer children and constantly reminding Orwell (a scholarship boy) of his second-class standing and the relative poverty of his parents.

It was a place of arbitrary and humiliating punishment, of extreme (and, he concedes, effective) physical cruelty: a dim boy is described as being flogged towards a scholarship exam "as one might do with a foundered horse", and of comical disgustingness. Under the overhanging rims of the porridge bowls, he writes, "were accumulations of sour porridge, which could be flaked off in long strips. The porridge itself, too, contained more lumps, hairs and unexplained black things than one would have thought possible, unless someone were putting them there on purpose."

The plunge-bath was "slimy", the towels "always-damp … with their cheesy smell" and on a rare winter visit to the local baths he sees in the "murky seawater" there is "floating a human turd". He writes of remembering a "pretty, mother's darling of a new boy" about whom the first thing he noticed was the "beautiful pearly whiteness of his teeth": "By the end of that term his teeth were an extraordinary shade of green."

More than physical disgust, Orwell is at pains to evoke a world of profound moral unease. "Such, Such" opens with a description of the seven-year-old narrator being beaten with a riding crop for wetting the bed, and then – because he was overheard telling another boy afterwards that "It didn't hurt" – being beaten again with such savagery that the riding crop broke: "The bone handle went flying across the room. 'Look what you've made me do!' the teacher "said furiously, holding up the broken crop".

The tears Orwell shed then, he writes, were not of anger or grief but of shame – "a conviction of sin and folly and weakness such as I do not remember to have felt before": "I can still recall my feeling as I saw the handle lying on the carpet – the feeling of having done an ill-bred clumsy thing, and ruined an expensive object. I had broken it: so Sambo told me, and so I believed. This acceptance of guilt lay unnoticed in my memory for 20 or 30 years."

Above all, then, Orwell zeroes in on the idea that here was a regime (the term seems apt) whose assumptions about the order of the universe are contradictory and unjust – yet at the same time unquestioningly internalised by its subjects. He hated Flip and Sambo and yet knew them to be his benefactors. He had no control over his bedwetting – though he prayed fervently for it to stop – yet was conscious of it as sin: "This was the great, abiding lesson of my boyhood: that I was in a world where it was not possible for me to be good."

"Such, Such" was never published in Orwell's lifetime. He himself said he thought it probably too libellous to print, and lawyers agreed: Secker & Warburg's libel report red-flagged more than 30 paragraphs of its 15,000-odd words. When Malcolm Muggeridge visited Secker & Warburg in early 1950, and talk turned to the possible inclusion of "Such, Such" in a collection of posthumous essays, publisher Roger Senhouse dismissed it as "full of self-pity". Muggeridge conceded the point, but likened it to a "dehydrated" version of David Copperfield . It only saw unexpurgated publication in the UK in 1968, after Mrs Wilkes was safely in her grave.

It is a very odd piece of writing. As a literary performance it takes its place alongside works such as Alec Waugh's The Loom of Youth and Cyril Connolly's Enemies of Promise – to which Orwell likely intended it as a sort of reply or companion piece. It is powerfully evocative, nakedly tendentious, and – as Senhouse noted – absolutely sodden with self-pity. What is perhaps oddest is that while you might expect it to show Orwell in analytical mode – a meditation on the way in which the private school system internalises expectations to do with class and hierarchy – you find none of that detachment. It hints at those themes but it is agonisingly personal, a howl of grievance when it is not a yelp of derisive laughter.

"There is this feeling at the bottom of it," says Orwell's biographer DJ Taylor , "and Orwell makes this point himself about Dickens writing about the blacking factory in David Copperfield , that deep at the heart of this is not so much a complaint that small boys are made to endure all this, but that I, George Orwell, or I, Charles Dickens, was made to endure all this."

The personal nature of the essay, then, should sound a note of caution. With as many Old Etonians in David Cameron's cabinet as were in Asquith's when Orwell went to St Cyprian's, and with Michael Gove bringing the squeak of chalk on blackboard back to the classroom, it is tempting to make claims for the contemporaneity of "Such, Such". Those parallels should be somewhat resisted.

In the first place, the sort of school that Orwell's essay describes – the single-sex boarding prep school staffed by sadists and reeking of gym socks, boiled cabbage and pederasty – is now distinctly on the wane. Few, even among the traditional upper classes, now dispatch their children to boarding school at the age of six or seven.

And there is a good deal of evidence to suggest that Orwell's account of his prep-school days was – how to put this? – a load of utter bollocks. Orwell's childhood friend Jacintha Buddicom said that the "I" of "Such, Such", "just was not Eric at all". She remembered him as a happy child, and such railing against St Cyprian's as she recalled was warmly humorous rather than bitter or aggrieved. Among several who left records of their time there, none strikes the same note. The golfer and sports writer Henry Longhurst said that Orwell's hated Mrs Wilkes was "the outstanding woman of my life", and when a dinner in her honour was given in 1951, 250 former pupils turned out.

"Unquestionably, Orwell intended it to be taken as literally true, which equally unquestionably, it is not," Taylor writes in his biography. He adds now: "It's a very literary performance. It's not reportage. It's very considered writing – looking back in time 25 years and very structurally coherent."

So what was going on? Did Orwell fabricate a miserable childhood? Or – in the trowelling on of improbably damning detail – was there a more general literary project in hand? Taylor points to the bizarre paranoia of one episode – in which the young Orwell, having sneaked out to buy chocolate from a sweet shop a mile or more from the school, emerged and took fright at a "small sharp-faced man who seemed to be staring very hard at my school cap".

"There could be no doubt who the man was," Orwell writes. "He was a spy placed there by Sambo! I turned away unconcernedly and then, as though my legs were doing it of their own accord, broke into a clumsy run. But when I got round the next corner I forced myself to walk again, for to run was a sign of guilt, and obviously there would be other spies posted here and there about the town."

A society in which one could be guilty without doing anything deliberate, in which surveillance was assumed to be total, and in which shame and fear and humiliation were profoundly internalised – it is, as Taylor suggests, more than plausible that "Such, Such" evinces a cross-contamination with Orwell's most famous novel.

"It is a fascinating piece," says Taylor, "because of the connections between it and Nineteen Eighty-Four . If you go back and read the descriptions of O'Brien, he is described as being first like a priest and then like a schoolmaster. It's almost like Winston Smith is the boy he is trying to reform. And I'm interested by all the totalitarian language in "Such, Such". Which piece came first – you can argue either way. In some ways the chronology isn't even important."

He adds: "The other point I'd make about it is how very alone the writer is – this tremendous sense of isolation. This is what Orwell does with his novels: he creates this almost entirely alone and friendless character at the mercy of vast and unappeasable forces that he or she has no way of comprehending or dealing with – and then the walls close in. That's the plot of all the five novels – I'm not counting Animal Farm – reaching its climax in Nineteen Eighty-Four . And exactly the same trick is played here ."

"Such, Such" may be a distorting mirror, but it is a mirror nonetheless. Many of us will still recognise aspects of it – whether in the structures and assumptions Orwell describes, or simply in the childhood sense of being powerless in an alien institution. And, certainly, it is almost a truism that the sort of school, of which Orwell's St Cyprian's was an example – and the public schools which they fed – were and are instruments of social indoctrination. Here are little microcosms of the sort of authoritarian and hierarchical society that their products were expected to go on and govern. The cliche that the battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton nods at this.

I didn't attend a boarding prep school, but I did go to Eton. I am younger than David Cameron and wasn't in his house (or "hice", as we Etonians like to pronounce it) so have no memories of our future leader. I do remember Damian Lewis as Wackford Squeers in a school production of Nicholas Nickleby , though – with Smike affectingly played by Rory Stewart , now MP for Penrith and the Border. The Eton I attended didn't ostensibly resemble Orwell's St Cyprian's, however, any more than it resembled Dickens's Dotheboys Hall.

That said, its forms and hierarchies were easily internalised. I attribute to my education not only an uncountable number of advantages and privileges, but some of the characteristics I find least attractive in myself. I have a craven teacher-pleasing tendency: a deference to authority and a desire to excel within parameters established by others rather than to challenge those parameters. I am a more conventional – sometimes timid – thinker than I would like.

One aspect of that school's setup – the prefect system – still seems to me a stroke of ideological genius: an object lesson in co-option. There, as in St Cyprian's and any comparable institution, "virtue consisted in winning": the strong and beautiful attracted hero-worship. So the apex prefect body, "Pop", is self-elective: the most popular boys – ie those most in a position to lead others astray – are also the most thoroughly bought and sold.

Their special privilege is to peacock about in coloured waistcoats – and for this, they will dutifully and without pay perform tedious prison-trusty duties such as spending hours in the rain on Windsor bridge preventing younger boys sneaking to the pub. What is cleverest is that they wear the price at which they've been bought – shiny buttons and a swatch of brightly coloured cloth – on their chests.

We can certainly see about us those – need we mention names? – to whom politics seems to be the continuation of private school by other means. For those for ever striving to regain the intoxication of having been a gilded god at 18, a cabinet post shines as the equivalent of election to Pop, and the prime ministerial job as the ultimate combination of head boy and victor ludorum .

At the same time there is a strong tradition of public schools acting on certain temperaments to produce absolutely the opposite: rebels whose anti-establishment zeal seems to have been fired by exposure to the rituals of that establishment at an early age. From Shelley (Eton) to Paul Foot (Shrewsbury), Tam Dalyell (Eton) to  Tony Benn (Westminster), many prominent figures on the left have been public schoolboys.

"A school could be conducive to that, if you have a certain kind of mind, because it is a sort of oppressive dictatorship in miniature," says Karl Marx's biographer and Private Eye stalwart Francis Wheen . "Some of us found it so oppressive that we rebelled against it. I hated Harrow so much that I ran away when I was 16 and left a note for my parents saying: 'I've gone to join the Alternative Society' and scampered off to London and lived in a squat. It's fair to say in my case that my politics was formed in reaction to Harrow."

Talking about the current schisms in the Socialist Workers party, Wheen points out that the party's leader Alex Callinicos , grandson of the 2nd Lord Acton, was educated at a top private school and another senior leader, Charlie Kimber, is the Old Etonian son of a baronet. Also prominent in the brouhaha has been Dave Renton, an Old Etonian barrister related to a former Tory chief whip: "It sometimes reads like a conversation between Old Rugbeians and Old Etonians about the main British Trotskyist party. It's quite bizarre."

There is a popular school of thought, indeed, that holds that the treachery of the Cambridge spy ring was a reaction against their public school educations – an idea explored psychologically in (Old Wykehamist) Julian Mitchell's fine 1981 play Another Country . Lindsay Anderson's film If … , meanwhile, dramatised the idea of the public school rebel as a sort of violent dream.

Yet for all "Such, Such" might suggest this conclusion, Orwell himself – who had no complaint about his time at Eton – can't, on its evidence, be planted straightforwardly in the tradition of the public-school lefty. "No, no," says Taylor. "He's always much too idiosyncratic for that kind of thing. The thing about Orwell, which has become almost a cliche, is that he was a conservative in everything except for politics … It's very easy with Orwell to make it all teleological and work back – but in some ways he was very conventional. I don't think he was at all radicalised until the 1930s."

"Such, Such Were the Joys", then, remains a riddling and fascinating document. Rather than describing the formative experience for Orwell's vision of totalitarianism it may, instead, have been a description itself formed by that vision. To repurpose Eliot's line: "We had the experience but missed the meaning, / And approach to the meaning restores the experience." It is a black magic of which the mythical St Cyprian might have approved.

These Delaware grade schools were honored by Federal judges in Law Day essay contest

To celebrate Law Day, local federal judges honored grade-school children who won an essay contest on the importance of the right to a jury trial.

Children from throughout Delaware were invited to submit essays, which were judged by a panel of judges from Delaware District and Bankruptcy courts.

The four winning classes were honored in Judge Maryellen Noreika’s court in Wilmington Monday where they read their essays in the presence of Noreika, Judge Sherry Fallon, Judge Christopher Burke and Bankruptcy Judge Kate Stickles.

"All essay submissions were outstanding and reflected the thoughtfulness and effort the students and teachers dedicated to this contest," Delaware District Court officials wrote in a press release.

Winners were selected from the following schools:

  • Vanessa Gallaher’s fourth grade class from the Bayard School
  • Jamie Henry’s fifth grade class from Mispillion Elementary School
  • Vanessa Johnson’s sixth grade class from Dover Middle School of Excellence
  • Joy Schwab’s seventh grade class from the Newark Charter School

The unexpected explanation for why school segregation spiked

On eve of the 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, a study finds policy choices explain the rise in segregated schools.

It’s well documented that after falling for years, school segregation has risen again in the United States. But why? New research by academics at the University of Southern California and Stanford University concludes that some popular theories are not to blame.

Ahead of the 70th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision, a study being released Monday shows a pronounced increase in school segregation since 1988, particularly in large school districts with significant numbers of Black students.

Overall, school segregation between Black and White students has increased by 25 percent since 1991 in the 533 large districts serving at least 2,500 Black students — a significant increase but nowhere near the decline that occurred in the aftermath of Brown , according to the study. (Of note: the paper makes clear that most of the school segregation in the United States is driven by demographic differences between districts , not within them.)

A school district that was entirely segregated would score 1.0 on the researchers’ segregation scale, whereas a perfectly integrated district, where every school perfectly matched the overall district’s demographics, would score 0.0.

Looking at the nation’s 100 largest districts, segregation was 0.45 in 1968. That fell to 0.17 by 1986 and then rose to 0.28 by 2019, researchers found. So while schools are nowhere near as segregated as they were before courts began enforcing the Brown decision, segregation has risen in recent decades.

Researchers offered the example of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools system in North Carolina, where segregation was absolute — a score of 1.0 — in 1950, before Brown . By 1968, it remained a still-high 0.66 — at that time, the average White student’s school was 10 percent Black, while the average Black student’s school was 76 percent Black (the difference between 10 and 76 produces the score of 0.66).

Then, in 1971, after the courts ordered a desegregation plan in another landmark court case, this one involving the Charlotte-Mecklenburg district , the segregation score there shrank to just 0.03. (The average White student’s school was 31 percent Black; the average Black student’s school was 34 percent Black.) By 1991, it was still low at 0.10 before rising again. In 2022, segregation had reached 0.44.

The study finds that the rise nationally was not driven by increasing housing segregation. Housing segregation certainly helps explain school segregation. But since 1991, housing has become less segregated.

The study also finds that rising school segregation is not driven by racial economic inequality because racial economic inequality also declined over this period.

Both of these trends “would have led to lower school segregation, had nothing else changed,” said the paper by Ann E. Owens, a sociologist at USC, and Sean F. Reardon, a professor of poverty and inequality in education at Stanford.

So what does explain the rise?

Rather than systemic forces that are difficult to change, these trends are driven by policy choices, they conclude. The researchers point to two specific policies: federal courts releasing school districts, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg, from obligations to desegregate schools beginning in significant numbers in the late 1990s; and school-choice policies that let parents pick what school their children attend.

“It’s not these big structural factors that are outside the school districts’ control that are driving this,” Reardon said in an interview. “It’s things that are under the control of the educational system.”

Court-ordered desegregation plans implemented based on the Brown decision had reduced segregation. But then judges began lifting those orders. “If you switch from an active desegregation effort and go back to neighborhood schools, school segregation is going to go up a lot,” Reardon said.

Had those court orders not been lifted, the study estimates that school segregation would have grown 20 percent less than it did.

At the same time, choice systems such as the introduction of charter schools allowed parents more control — and many used that to choose schools with students like their own. The new study specifically looked at the growth of charter schools and found that if charter schools had not expanded, school segregation would have grown 14 percent less.

These two factors account for all of the rise in school segregation from 2000 to 2019, the paper found.

The rising segregation numbers “appear to be the direct result of educational policy and legal decisions,” the paper concludes. “They are not the inevitable result of demographic changes — and can be changed by alternative policy choices.”

And the Winner Is: Kendrick Lamar. And Old-School Hip-Hop.

The rap battle between Drake and Kendrick Lamar is about more than whatever personal beefs these two men have with each other. As many have noted , it is a significant moment in hip-hop history, and not just because Mr. Lamar’s diss track “ Not Like Us ,” released last week, has become the hip-hop song with the most plays on U.S. Spotify in a single day — surpassing the high set previously by Drake and Lil Baby.

What sets this rap battle apart from previous high-profile hip-hop feuds is its magnitude and implications for popular music. Hip-hop, born as an underground movement, has long been a global phenomenon, leading certain artists to blur the lines between authenticity and commercialization. The global pop audience has always been more drawn to a simplified hip-hop sound devoid of the complex lyrics and politicized messages that characterize “conscious” rap.

Mr. Lamar’s victory signals a resurgence of lyrically rich rap — and a return to the roots of hip-hop culture — all while establishing a new template for relevance in an era when content can go viral instantly on social media and streaming platforms. If Drake, who has become the face of rap’s mainstream pop faction, has lost this battle, that setback is not his alone.

Mr. Lamar’s ability to write layered and intricate lyrics has long been lauded. But this battle has brought new attention and enthusiasm to the particular artistic element at which he excels. Fans have scrambled to decipher his complex verses with each new release. (The website Genius , where users annotate lyrics, crashed from the volume of visitors investigating this feud.) Mr. Lamar’s apparent decision to remove copyright protections for “Not Like Us” has also enabled a wide dissemination of the track, allowing content creators to monetize posts featuring the song.

Removing these kind of constraints on the distribution of the song signals a new and savvy approach to marketing and sales in the music industry. It’s another facet of Mr. Lamar’s victory — enlisting countless unseen collaborators to spread his message and join his crusade.

Drake has been doing his best to counter and innovate. His second volley in the battle, “Taylor Made Freestyle,” incorporated A.I. to enlist two iconic figures from West Coast hip-hop: Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg. (Drake removed the song from social media after objections from Mr. Shakur’s estate .) Drake also took direct aim at Mr. Lamar’s supposed lyrical prowess, taunting him to respond with a “quintuple entendre.”

Underestimating Mr. Lamar — who won a Pulitzer Prize for his album “DAMN.” — was a questionable move. Mr. Lamar’s response, “ Euphoria ,” arrived with the precision and effectiveness of a heat-seeking missile. The title “Euphoria” nods not only to the feeling but to the HBO series on which Drake has been an executive producer — a show known for its controversial portrayal of teenage sexuality, a parallel that underscores Mr. Lamar’s allegations that Drake harbors inappropriate infatuations.

In the arena of rap battles, entendres are wielded precisely because they imbue words with layers of meaning. Nowhere is this more evident than in the stark contrast between love and hate, the poles around which rap oscillates. In a pivotal moment in “Euphoria,” Mr. Lamar adopted the persona of the late rapper DMX, who in 2012 aired his grievances about Drake on “The Breakfast Club,” a radio show that was a cornerstone of hip-hop media. On the track, Mr. Lamar echoes DMX as he snarls at Drake, “I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress.”

Drake parried by questioning Mr. Lamar’s authenticity, characterizing his portrayal of Black empowerment as superficial and insincere. But Mr. Lamar swiftly retaliated, targeting Drake’s alleged cultural appropriation. Authenticity in hip-hop is often tied to a rapper’s ability to embody the distinctive sound of their hometown — something Drake, a Canadian of ambiguous racial identity, has skillfully transcended, crossing geographical and musical boundaries and incorporating regional sounds from across the United States, particularly the South.

In the closing lines of “Not Like Us,” Mr. Lamar zeros in on what he sees as Drake’s vulnerability. Mr. Lamar’s artistry shines through as he seamlessly weaves together social commentary and catchy rhythms. He begins by evoking the painful legacy of Black Americans in chains, then highlights Atlanta’s historical significance as a hub for the slave trade in the South — before drawing parallels to Drake’s exploitation of Southern rap culture for personal gain. His indictment culminates with a damning accusation: “You run to Atlanta when you need a few dollars,” he says. Drake is not a “colleague,” he’s a “colonizer.”

Through his incisive lyrics Mr. Lamar exposes the complexities of cultural identity and power dynamics within the rap industry — all while carrying the banner of lyrical rap. His verbal offensive proves the depth and staying power of hip-hop’s history and culture, with its legacy of lyrical dexterity and complexity.

Armed with these tools and talents, Mr. Lamar managed to topple Drake, and in the process has shown himself, by calling on hip-hop’s traditions, to be more relevant to the current moment. At least until the bell sounds to signal the next round.

The modernity of any civilization is not being judged appropriately.

Every character in the story plays a significant role." The little boy" is the protagonist of the story. He is curious about learning new things. He is a Creole language speaker. His mother is a caring and warm-hearted woman. She wants to fulfill every wish of her children. The little boy's teacher presumes himself as a missionary who has a responsibility to educate native uncivilized society. He believes in the French model of the deliverance of education. The Director of the school never talks to children but to punish them for their mistake.

The story is written from the third person's viewpoint. The story starts with the little boy's excitement to go to school as his elder siblings go. First, he attends nursery school. Here, the teacher is kind and helps the little boy to feel comfortable. He feels good to learn new things. The little boys' curiosity for learning is going to be satisfied here. He makes new friends and makes his life much more entertaining than the previous one.

Later, he attends real school. Here, his experiences are different. This school is not on the line for which he is expected. The teacher has inappropriate behavior against Creole students. Students are being harassed in front of the class. Students are being taught the French language which is practically very difficult for the students of Creole civilization background. On the other hand, the little boy enjoys playing with friends. A special break for drinking milk is also an adventurous time for the little boy in school. Ultimately, his sensible approach to read a lot and rewrite the stories through his imagination helps him to become a good writer.

The native culture of Creole people has become subordinate to the French rule. It shows the subjugation of identity of Creole people in the colonial period. No student is allowed to communicate in their mother tongue in the school. The self-identity of Creole people and the glory of their ancient culture have been given no importance. The teacher always expresses that Europeans are a superior race. The little boy is unable to understand how his culture is inferior to the French civilization. Cultural differences, preoccupation in the human mind, problems with the system of the deliverance of knowledge, class discrimination have been expressed in the story.

Our son died by suicide 2 years ago. We’re still waiting for him at the dinner table

When death arrives at your home, there is no option to deny entry. At 1:25 a.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2022, we were awakened by two New York City police officers. As we opened the front door, the life we had known and loved so dearly ended. Our 17-year-old son Jack had died by suicide while away at school. Confronted with this sudden, out-of-order, tragic loss, it felt as if we were falling backwards through space with no sense of time or place.

A dark indelible line divides our world into two planes: before death (B.D.) and after death (A.D.). Every moment now falls into one of these two eras. We loved life with our children. And then deafening silence arrived. Death swept in unexpectedly and it took our child and left behind traumatic and complicated grief. It’s exceedingly painful to acknowledge we have now spent two years on this Earth without our son.

A grief journey is as unique as fingerprints. No two are the same. For us, much of the first year was spent trying to uncover the truth of Jack’s death. We knew he had been bullied unmercifully for over a year and had been dealing with false rumors that were also spread about him online. Before the bullying began, he was a happy and well-adjusted teenager with a strong support system that included his friends and devoted family. We never imagined that our happy child could be driven to take his own  life. His birthday, Thanksgiving and Christmas all passed as we watched numbly. We endured.

In our second year without Jack, we realized that you never master the pain of losing a child. You carry it everywhere, in your heart, head, body and soul, forever. Such grief is lonely and isolating. And deeply personal. The second time Jack’s birthday arrived without him, the permanence of his loss began to set in.  The numbing of trauma slowly faded and the pain intensified. Deep unbearable pain. As described by Stephen Colbert on Anderson Cooper’s podcast , it’s as if a tiger has moved into our home, following us from room to room and swiping at us without warning.

Traumatic grief is both physical and emotional. Sudden exhaustion, chest pains, insomnia, nightmares, racing heart, panic. It feels as if the air is vacuumed out of your lungs, your throat and tongue burning with a charred sensation that no drink can quench or cool. As Bessel van der Kolk describes in “The Body Keeps the Score,” his bestselling book, traumatic experiences “leave traces on our minds and emotions, on our capacity for joy and intimacy, and even on our biology and immune systems.” And there is no cure because there is no disease. As the saying goes, grief is the price we pay for loving.  

After Jack died, everything in our life changed in an instant. Our family of four became a family of three at every meal. The “empty chair” is a powerful symbol of grief. It’s also real. At restaurants, the waiter asks if we are waiting for a fourth before clearing away the extra utensils. Yes, we are waiting. Forever. The home you shared with your family now has ghosts, memories of happy times that flash in your mind when you enter a room. We have grief friends who moved apartments or to new states or countries to escape. And then moved again. And again. Grief always follows. We are trying to stay put, in our home — in Jack’s home.

After tragic loss, a sense of isolation enters your life. Friends may have no idea what to say to you or worry about invading your privacy. We love talking about our son. But it is as if the school bus of parents and kids driving through life drops you at the curb and you watch them and their children ride away to graduate from high school and attend college, moving further and further into the future. Our son will forever be 17, only a junior in high school. Each of us is unique, but as humans we all want to be seen, listened to. 

Much of your old life simply evaporates after a loss like this. And it is hard, very hard, to start again and create new friendships, unless you can connect with other grieving parents. We are fortunate to have been able to do that.  

There is no “getting over” tragic loss. There is only surviving. You can find joy again, but grief never leaves. We are human — we love, laugh, care, speak and live with intensity and purpose. We have meaning and a mission. We are surviving. But whatever we do, or however we appear, there is no “channeling” this grief into something else. It coexists with everything else. We hold it all simultaneously.

There are far too many parents who understand our grief. And there are far too many children at risk. Teenage mental health has never been worse . There are unprecedented epidemics of teen suicide , loneliness , anxiety and depression . Dangers like bullying lurk at school and as our children spend more and more time on social media, they’re increasingly exposed to dangerous content and individuals.

We started the Jack Reid Foundation to raise public awareness about the dangers of bullying. We have been championing the enactment of legislation requiring anti-bullying programs in all schools — not just public ones. With the scourge of bullying and harassment reaching crisis levels, we need programs that protect all students. More so, we need to begin rebuilding communities for students to learn and connect, by encouraging empathy and compassion, and leading with kindness. If children do not feel safe, they cannot learn and grow.

We hope to change the way we approach bullying and cyber-bullying, and through change create a healthier learning environment for children. Most of all, we want to advocate for more kindness in the world, something Jack passionately believed in. Our relationship with our son has not ended. It has changed. By working to help other victims of bullying we keep him and his memory alive. We share these words from our broken, feeling hearts. With love.
