‘Anyone Home?’ Review

Stars: Monique Gabriela Curnen, Kathy Baker, Luke Ganalon, Jon Jon Briones, Keram Malicki-Sánchez, Maree Cheatham, Jasper Cole, Victoria Cruz, Jill Jordan, Cici Lau | Written by Patrick Cunningham, William Day Frank | Directed by Patrick Cunningham

Genre movies based in the home usually take one of a few routes. They can be a haunted house tale, they can be a home invasion movie or they can be something else. Anyone Home? s its nicely in that ‘something else’ category.

It centres on a single mum, Camila (Monique Gabriela Curnen), who is struggling financially and mentally while bringing up her son. She thinks her luck has changed though when she gets a job house-sitting a model home. All she has to do is decorate the house to look good for when would be buyers look round. But it doesn’t take too long for even that to be too much for her.

Anyone Home?  doesn’t sound like your typical horror movie and in truth, it’s not but it does build to a creepiness I did not expect. At first, you wouldn’t call it ‘scary’. The horror of it is how much this woman is struggling with life and how you see her mind just fall apart. She, very quickly, becomes more and more insane; and you feel like she kind of knows what is happening to her but just goes along with it.

It’s a near perfect performance from Curnen in the role. She’s an experienced actress, previously starring in The Dark Knight, The Following, Contagion and much more, and she proves a great casting choice for the lead. You completely believe her when the character goes crazy… she plays it so well. And you can see the point at which she completely loses it,when she starts caring about her child less and less.  Anyone Home? is pretty much a one woman show but Curnen is good enough to hold it altogether.

Despite like I said earlier, this not being your normal genre movie it does feature plenty of horrific moments. Much of it is psychological fear and some brilliantly built tension (although we even get a masked killer by the end of the movie). There’s a scene with a hammer that build and builds until you’ll be screaming at the screen! The low budget doesn’t effect things either with first time director Patrick Cunningham (who also co-wrote the movie) using the less is more approach expertly. There are deaths, and there is a little blood but we simply don’t need to see lots of gore to understand the horrifying nature of what is going on.

There’s some nice cinematography and use of barren land around these new build houses that, alongside the score, creates an unsettling atmosphere throughout. You always feel a little on edge while watching Anyone Home? Interestingly there’s a dark comedy to almost every part of the film, small moments here and there that get a quick smile out of the viewer. Whether it’s one-liners, quirky characters or just that uneasy smile when something is so wrong and ridiculous that you can’t help yourself.

Patrick Cunningham will definitely be someone to watch in the future, this is a unique type of movie that tackles mental illness, the pressure of bringing up a child and owning your own house and creates an unnerving horror film from it. It’s a highly impressive debut.

not completely successful but much better & much more original & interesting than 98% of the random tubi horror stuff i throw on my watchlist.

there is one 'how did that happen' moment that i didn't get at all, & the ending didn't completely satisfy, but credit where it's due: this isunique & at times kind of depressing & even distressing. made me feel bad for that kid.

a bit of a downer, or at least it was to me, but if you're looking for something a bit different, this is a cut above most of the low budget stuff you're going to stumble upon.

This was a good movie, acting was good and a weird and different storyline. Only thing I didn’t like was the use of bipolar disorder to demonise the mother. Thought that was really inappropriate.

movies that make you go "huh? what?"

I wasn't offended by the mental illness theme; it felt like they were laughing with us, not against us, you know?

I was left with some questions and it kinda felt like half a story, but the cinnamontography was tasty, so I'll forgive it.

This was truly disappointing and quite insulting for those who have Bi-Polar. We see the main character in her worse form and the directors and writers demonized her because of her mental disorder and turned her manic behavior into a horror movie, and that’s not ok.  The acting was pretty good but the subject—Writers and directors, do better about supporting those with Bi-polar and not making them into those who should be feared.

A thirtysomething woman(Monique Gabriele Curnen[THE DARK KNIGHT,FAST & FURIOUS]) and her young son(Luke Ganalon[OUT OF THE BLUE[2013],BLESS ME ULTIMA]) move into a new remote Southern California home, where they each become terrorized by lurking spirits that yearn to take full bodily possession of them amid a series of gory murders that occur(and are caused by a ceramic mask sporting killer) in this incredibly terrible and downright boring horror yarn from director/co-writer Patrick Cunningham that is chock full of sluggish performances(from the cast),horrible storyline, and pitiful helming that pretty much does in this complete celluloid turkey very early.,

Anyone Home? (2018)

Anyone home.

A haunting psychological thriller, Anyone Home? explores the little-known practice of “live-in staging,” where recently evicted families are recruited to live in unsold properties. Curnen plays Camila, a single mother who begins to entertain dangerous fantasies while “staging” a model home in an otherwise empty development. Baker is the weary realtor who grows increasingly suspicious—and alarmed—at Camila’s behavior.

‘Anyone Home?’ (2019): An American Dream Turned Nightmare – Movie Review

Brandon January 16, 2020 Movie Reviews , Reviews Comments Off on ‘Anyone Home?’ (2019): An American Dream Turned Nightmare – Movie Review

Real life mental illness can be a horror story all on its own for those who struggle with psychological disorders. Treatment isn’t always available and, when it is, medication can bring on undesirable side effects. The latter is the bane of a single mother’s existence as she strives for a better life in Writer/Director Patrick Cunningham’s directorial debut, Anyone Home? (previously named Model Home ).

Hired as a live-in caretaker of an unsold house, Camila (Monique Gabriela Curnen: The Dark Knight 2008) is mesmerized by this place she and her son, Jaime (Luke Ganalon: Bless Me, Altima 2012), will call home. However, the single mother hides a condition from her new employer, Brenda (Kathy Baker: Edward Scissorhands 1990), for fear of losing this opportunity. As her young son dutifully monitors her daily medication, which consists of a handful of pharmaceuticals, it’s clear that Camila struggles with a serious mental illness… just how serious it is, we are about to find out.

Utilizing the vacancy while working a side gig in telecommunications for a home security company, Camila finds herself stumbling over words as her medicated mind has difficulty remembering what to say. With pressure rising and constantly dodging questions from Brenda, Camila stops her medication in hopes of alleviating the unwanted side effects. From here, this single mother enters a downward spiral of mental health deterioration as she frequents a nearby craft store to create a world of delusion as her reality melts away. With his mother losing her sanity, things become more than what Jaime can handle as the neglected child finds himself on his own in this deserted wasteland of suburbia.

Cunningham immediately sets an eerie tone for his feature debut with a desolate landscape full of empty houses and a street that lacks any signs of life. With the exception of a Buffalo Bill-type recluse (Jasper Cole: American Horror Story franchise) living out of a nearby RV, there is clearly not a single soul for miles. Though this seems like the setup to a traditional slasher flick, Cunningham artistically tackles the subject matter of mental health combined with chasing the American Dream. This puts the spotlight almost entirely on Curnen, who gives an outstanding portrayal of a layered character seeking to reach new heights, achievements and opportunities despite the challenges she faces.

From the beginning, Curnen builds sympathy for her character as someone who wants what we all want: a happy and successful life for her and her child. One cannot help but feel for Camila as she struggles to overcome her clouded thoughts and hide her physical tremors to reach a life glamorized in magazines and advertisements. As her character gradually becomes more dangerous as she loses touch with reality, Curnen maintains the delicate balance of likability while unmasking the unnerving side of a neglected mental illness.

anyone home movie review

Ganalon gives an equally impressive performance as a young boy who carries far too big of a burden for his age solely out of fear. Conveying a sense of loneliness and longing for a life far more simple than his mother’s dream, Jaime shows a certain level of sadness. However, this quiet melancholy turns into suspenseful terror as chaos threatens his safety and well-being.

Infusing a touch of dark humor with some bizarre situations, Anyone Home? offers some WTF moments that would work wonderfully … if the topic material wasn’t so serious. Don’t get me wrong: this humor isn’t in poor taste, nor does it turn mental health into a laughing matter. It doesn’t even work against the film. However, it does take away from the heavy topic of mental health and the materialistic drive in the society in which we live.

anyone home movie review

Watch Anyone Home? Now

Humor gripes aside, this unique psychological dramatic horror is a fantastic debut by Cunningham. Backed by strong cast performances, Anyone Home? showcases a story with depth. Not only is it a terrifying look into mental illness, but it is also a tale of losing oneself to the social standards of materialism. In lesser words, Anyone Home? is a horrific depiction of the American Dream masking an American Nightmare.

What to Know

Slick direction and a pair of tremendously watchable stars make Anyone But You a passably fizzy diversion despite a less than scintillating story.

‘Anyone But You’s Big Sex Scene Finds Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell Steaming Up a Shower

Dermot mulroney jokes ‘my best friends wedding’ poster left him unemployed for a year: “if you’d made me a little bigger, maybe i could have gotten a job”, ‘easy a’ director will gluck gave us another iconic natasha bedingfield moment in ‘anyone but you’, glen powell says sydney sweeney affair rumors helped sell ‘anyone but you’: “it worked wonderfully”.

The bland-as-a-cracker rom-com landscape has been very incredibly eye-candied thanks to Anyone but You (now streaming on Netflix, in addition to VOD services like Amazon Prime Video ), which puts Sydney Sweeney ( Euphoria , Reality ) and Glen Powell ( Top Gun: Maverick , Everybody Wants Some!! ) in several states of undress as they kindle their chemistry. That may explain why the film was a sneaky theatrical hit, earning $189 million worldwide, its audiences actually growing from week to week, presumably because word got out that we get to see how some hot young stars have been ’scaping various parts of their bodies. So yes, Anyone but You is horny, but it’s also funny, silly, sweet and stupid enough to be more than just an excuse to ogle the beef ‘n’ cheese.

ANYONE BUT YOU : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: The setting: a cafe. Bea (Sweeney) has to PEE. Like, really bad. But as by-the-book baristas in movies always are, she won’t let Bea use the can without buying something first, and the line makes the Great Wall of China look like the anthills on your sidewalk. Thankfully, Ben (Powell) is next in line, witnesses the exchange and acquires the bathroom key for our full-bladdered protagonist. This is the Meet Cute, of course. The movie gets right to it. No wasting time. Gotta appreciate that. Bea and Ben start bantering, and you’re no doubt thinking, has she forgotten the feeling of intense pressure down there? But then you’re realizing, aha, she’s experiencing a different pressing feeling down there. Who can blame her? This guy is a sexy hunk of sex.

And so Bea and Ben – Bea and Ben, Ben and Bea, Bea and Ben, it just rings with alliterative charm, doesn’t it? – end up back at his place not doing it yet. It’s too soon! Gotta build some of that sexy tension, you know. He makes grilled cheese sandwiches and they stay up for hours talking, and end up snuggling, still dressed, above the covers. He’s a finance bro who probably doesn’t even use one of the four ovens in his kitchen. She’s a law student who isn’t so sure if she wants to be a lawyer. They’re just oozing explosive lava charm together, Bea and Ben, Ben and Bea. But. Bea wakes up and sneaks out, and when she realizes she shouldn’t have done that, turns around and heads back and overhears Ben, honked off that she split without saying goodbye, tells his bestie Pete (GaTa) that she’s a mess and was just another notch on the ol’ bedpost.

Pissed, Bea walks away and the movie ends and nobody ends up in Australia in various states of undress at all. No! I’m lying! As luck, fate and/or the screenwriter’s omnipotent hand would have it, Bea’s sister Halle (Hadley Robinson) ends up engaged to Pete’s sister Claudia (Alexandra Shipp), and a year or two or whatever after their magically cute night together, Bea and Ben find themselves on the same plane to koala country for for one of those no-expense-spared destination weddings. I mean, it’s on a damn isthmus jutting into the ocean. Shit’s expensive , bro. And it’s totally miserable, especially if you’re Bea and you’re stuck next to Ben or if you’re Ben and you’re stuck next to Bea, and you all hate each other. They spit-fire word-daggers at each other, like “You’ll always be my rock bottom,” stuff like that. There’s no way they will ever get over their mutual disgust and smush genitals. No way . Might as well turn the movie off right now.

But in case you don’t, let it be known that there are other characters in the movie complicating everything: There’s Bea’s parents (Dermot Mulroney and Rachel Griffiths), who are pushy and overbearing and don’t yet know that she dropped out of law school, and they invite her ex-fiancee Jonathan (Darren Barnet) along, hoping they’ll get back together. There’s also Claudia’s mother and stepfather (Michelle Hurd and Bryan Brown), and Ben’s ex Margaret (Charlee Fraser), who broke his heart, and is now dating Beau (Joe Davidson), a Thor-like slab o’ not enough brain cells. Some of these characters worry that Bea and Ben’s bickering will ruin the wedding weekend, so they conspire to make them fall in love; meanwhile, Jonathan and Margaret’s nearbyness complicate Bea and Ben’s feelings. Sigh – this is really starting to feel like 5-D CHESS, I tell you. Hijinks ensue, of course, and since there’s a thin line between the one thing and the other thing, inevitably someone will trip over that line, and probably show their ass while doing it, literally.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Between the surprisingly charming and funny Anyone but You and the similarly surprisingly charming and funny No Hard Feelings , one can’t help but hope we’re in the middle of a rom-comaissance. (We might need a third R-rated sex comedy released by Sony before we can officially declare it, though.)

Performance Worth Watching: Powell and Sweeney each carry a beaker full of liquid and when they pipet droplets into the same canister, the resulting concoction fizzes nicely, like a seventh-grade science experiment.

Memorable Dialogue: Even the script knows these people are acting like junior-high dopes:

Ben: Making her jealous isn’t gonna work. We’re not in seventh grade. Bea: Trust me, bro. We’re all in seventh grade when it comes to this stuff.

Sex and Skin: Some butts, some boobs, some pubes, a fairly steamy sex scene and one incidence of close-up comedy peen.

Our Take: Hint: It’s best if you consider Anyone but You a full-on Daffy-Duck-wearing-polka-dots-and-a-flower-face screwball romp, because the less seriously you take it, the more you’ll enjoy it. Directed by Will Gluck ( Easy A ), who co-wrote with Ilana Wolpert, the film is allegedly inspired by Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing . As much as I’d like to brush that off with a yeah-whatever eyeroll, that fact encourages us to consider the movie folly for folly’s sake, a loose and silly lark that embraces rom-com cliches while poking a bit of gently satirical fun at them. Coincidences and contrivances abound in this dumbass plot, but it at least seems as if the filmmakers are aware that they’re fiddling with formula – and making sure the characters are aware too, albeit in a manner that’s more infectiously silly than gratingly self-referential.

Understanding the tonal needle Gluck threads here is key to our acceptance of numerous ridiculous scenes, e.g., the one where Ben rips all his clothes off after Bea puts her hand in his shorts and pulls out a spider the size of an IHOP flapjack. The movie inevitably delivers predictable slapstick hijinks involving rescue helicopters and dropped wedding cakes, all set against picturesque backdrops – Aussie nature walks, dinner cruises on the harbor, etc. – that look especially amazing with a bare, nicely bronzed set of glutes in the foreground. Gluck shows commitment to the type of slick visuals we haven’t really seen in rom-coms for the last decade-and-a-half or so, and he not only inspires snappy comic timing from his cast, but generates some as well with clever angles and slam-bang edits.

None of this would work if Powell and Sweeney didn’t show a little bit of that je ne sais quoi, and by that I don’t mean abs and cleaves, but actually maybe I do mean it, because they look pretty great up there on the screen, dripping with pheromones in evening wear and bathing suits (or less), generally representing the human species’ ideal physical form, and stoking our desire to see them break and enter each other like thieves. They also exchange high-octane burns convincingly enough to make the inevitable earnest breakthrough feel legit, or at least legit enough for a high-gloss rom-com that’s about absolutely nothing except the most superficial qualities of crazy stupid human love. That we even give two-thirds of a shit whether or not they get together in the end is a testament to this movie’s ability to erode our cynicism towards the familiarities of the genre. Which is to say, if you don’t like Anyone but You , a little too much of your curmudge may be showing.

Our Call: Powell and Sweeney work hard to sell Anyone but You ’s sexy-sweet-funny formula – and I’m buying. STREAM IT.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell in "Anyone But You."

Anyone But You finally made its Netflix streaming debut, which is exciting news for rom-com fans everywhere. As you watch the movie, you might be wondering where Anyone But You was filmed and if you can visit the breathtaking beaches, cliffs, and other locations in real life.

Loosely adapted from Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” Anyone But You stars Glen Powell as Ben, a finance bro who has an incredible first date with Bea (Sydney Sweeney), a law student uncertain about her career. After spending the night, Bea panics and leaves without telling him. When she realizes she made a mistake and returns to his apartment, she overhears Ben saying that she is a “nothing” to him.

Years later, they unexpectedly reunite at a destination wedding in Australia for Bea’s sister, who is marrying Ben’s friend. When their exes show up, they pretend to be a couple—and the rest is history. The film was directed and co-written by Will Gluck, the filmmaker behind rom-coms like Easy A and Friends with Benefits . It was released in December and had an impressive run at the box office, surpassing $88 million domestically and $219 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo .

After its release, the movie went viral on TikTok as audience goers reacted to the film’s credit sequence, which features the cast dancing and singing to Natasha Bedingfield’s nostalgic 2004 hit “Unwritten,” a song highlighted throughout the film. There were also rumors of an off-screen romance between Powell and Sweeney that helped promote the film, as well as the actors’ flirty publicity tour and Sydney Sweeney’s SNL monologue .

Now, Anyone But You is back in the limelight after the film was released on Netflix on April 23, quickly becoming the No. 1 movie on the platform in the U.S. after just one day.

Anyone But You was filmed in parts of Australia around New South Wales and Sydney. Director Will Gluck told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted the film set in Sydney because he had “really fallen in love with the city” and liked it so much he moved his family there.

“Almost every time you shoot a movie in Sydney, you have to pretend it’s somewhere else and frame out the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. For Anyone But You , I thought, “Why do that?” We actually wrote this movie 100 percent for Sydney — very specific to the destination,” Gluck wrote.

The director continued, “We flew helicopters all over — seeing the city from that vantage point is stunning — and landed one at the Opera House, shut down the Harbour Bridge, filmed at the Queen Victoria Building, and shot for two weeks overlooking Bondi Beach,” he said. “We spent a week on a boat in Sydney Harbour shooting a scene where they’re stranded on a buoy, but you can’t have humans in the water without a shark cage, so we had to have one the whole time. You pinch yourself. It’s so unbelievable we were actually doing these things.”

Here are a few specific Anyone But You filming locations you can visit in person.

Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is a focal point in Anyone But You. The 20th-century architectural landmark serves as a gorgeous backdrop for big moments, including the end scene when Ben passionately kisses Bea, who is standing at the top of the steps. You can visit the performing arts center for special events and tours.

Marks Park, Bondi

Located in Sydney's northern suburbs, the wedding scene in Anyone But You was filmed at Marks Park overlooking Bondi Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The cliff-top park is open to the public and has fitness stations, a playground, and some shaded areas.

Many of Anyone But You ’s breathtaking beach scenes were filmed around Palm Beach. Director Will Gluck told THR that one of the best parts of filming was on location in Palm Beach, a suburb in the Northern Beaches.

“Our caravans were parked right on the water, and Glen and Sydney and I decided to live there the whole time. We’d shoot all day and all the crew would go home, then we’d jump in the water and have a swim, go to our trailers and have dinner sitting outside,” he said. “It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world, and you normally wouldn’t be allowed to sleep there. It was probably the most fun I’ve ever had filming.”

Jones Bay Wharf

Screen Rant

Where was anyone but you filmed.

The romantic comedy Anyone But You stars Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney as a couple who pretend to date for a wedding – where was the movie filmed?

  • "Anyone But You," loosely based on Much Ado About Nothing, was filmed in Australia.
  • The film features fake dating tropes leading to real feelings, filmed in Terrey Hills, Marks Park, and Palm Beach in New South Wales.
  • Iconic scenes at a yacht party in Sydney Harbor, Sydney Opera House, and Sydney Cricket Ground contribute to the rom-com's charm.

Not only are romantic comedies making a comeback, but so are destination ones, including Anyone But You , which was filmed and takes place in Australia. The 2023 rom-com, directed by Will Gluck, is loosely based on William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing (adding to the list of Shakespeare-inspired rom-coms, like 10 Things I Hate About You ). Anyone But You revolves around Glen Powell's Ben and Sydney Sweeney's Bea, a couple whose spark quickly dwindles after first date misunderstandings. But they are reunited when Ben's sister and Bea's sister plan an Australian wedding, where Ben and Bea pretend to date.

Ben and Bea concoct their fake dating plan when their exes — Margaret and Jonathan, respectively — appear in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia for the wedding. Anyone But You 's fake dating trope has been used numerous times in various movies and television shows (but somehow fails to get old), and, as it always goes, Ben and Bea begin to develop feelings for one another. However, drama ensues (of course), and it all takes place in New South Wales, where the entirety of the cast of Anyone But You , including Powell and Sweeney, shot the film.

Terrey Hills

The beach house.

According to an article from The Hollywood Reporter that Anyone But You director Will Gluck wrote, the scenes at the beach house where most characters stayed in the days leading up to the wedding were filmed at an inland home in Terrey Hills. Terrey Hills is a suburb of Northern Sydney located about 15 miles north of Sydney, and the house itself was about an hour's drive from the city. As Gluck pointed out, the production team needed a "really, really big house," so they had to look outside Sydney for the best location for the beach house scenes.

Anyone But You: 12 Rom-Com Easter Eggs & Shakespeare References

The wedding.

Aside from the beach house scenes, one of the other important moments in the R-rated movie Anyone But You is the wedding sequence. Of course, almost the entirety of the 2023 film is leading up to Claudia and Halle's big day, and the cast and crew captured these scenes in Marks Park, Tamarama, Sydney, per Elle . Tamarama is one of Sydney's eastern suburbs, and Marks Park is located on top of a cliff overlooking breathtaking views of Australia's coastline and the Pacific Ocean, making it the perfect location for a wedding.

Beach Scenes

Since the home where the cast and crew of Anyone But You filmed the beach house scenes was inland, production had to find an adequate beach to shoot the beach sequences, and they landed on Palm Beach, a Sydney suburb 15 miles north of the city. According to director Will Gluck, the cast and crew spent 10 days in Palm Beach capturing scenes for Glen Powell and Syndey Sweeney's rom-com box office success . Gluck called Palm Beach "one of the most beautiful places in the world," and it's where Powell, Sweeney, and the director stayed during all of production.

Anyone But You director Will Gluck revealed that the cast and crew would jump in the water and swim in Palm Beach after wrapping filming for the day.

Sydney Sweeney's New Movie Could Not Be More Different From Anyone But You

Sydney harbor, yacht scene.

Before the 2023 romantic comedy's climax (aka the shower scene in Anyone But You and its aftermath), the characters enjoy a yacht party, filmed in Sydney Harbor in Port Jackson. These scenes included Ben and Bea's recreation of an iconic Titanic moment, Bea falling into the water and Ben diving in after her, and the two characters having a heart-to-heart talk on a buoy while waiting for a helicopter to rescue them.

The Sydney Opera House can be spotted numerous times throughout the 2023 rom-com, but its most significant use was during Anyone But You 's ending.

In the Hollywood Reporter article, Will Gluck revealed that the cast and crew spent a week in Sydney Harbor capturing these scenes. However, a shark cage was needed for the shoot because sharks populate the waters. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly , Gluck explained:

"Initially they wouldn't give us permission because [Sydney Harbor] is a huge shark area, and people get hurt by sharks all the time there ... A shark tank is these floating buoys with a cage. It was a little bit scary and strange at three in the morning with our actors swimming into a shark tank, knowing that they're at a place where sharks like to hang out."

Sydney Cricket Ground

Airport scene.

Even though it's a brief sequence, Pete picking Ben and Bea up from the airport in Anyone But You was filmed at a significant location — the Sydney Cricket Ground, a sports stadium in Moore Park, a suburb of Sydney. The scene between Glen Powell, Sydney Sweeney, and Ga-Ta's characters was captured in the lobby of the stadium, which houses cricket, football, and rugby games. So, while the moment in Anyone But You may look like it was shot at an airport, it was actually at the famous Sydney Cricket Ground.

6 Ways Anyone But You 2 Could Work If Glen Powell & Sydney Sweeney Return For A Sequel

Sydney opera house, ending scene.

The Sydney Opera House can be spotted numerous times throughout the 2023 rom-com, but its most significant use was during Anyone But You 's ending . After Claudia and Halle's wedding, Bea retreats to the Sydney Opera House, and Ben chases after her. The couple have their big declaration of love moment before kissing, and the Anyone But You moment is captured in front of the iconic performing arts center in the heart of Sydney.

Anyone But You is available to stream on Netflix.

Anyone But You

Anyone But You is a romantic comedy by director Will Gluck starring Sydney Sweeny and Glen Powell. Sweeny and Powell star as Bea and Ben, two strangers with an incredible first date that goes sour following one incident at the tail end. Thinking the worst is behind them, the two are roped into a destination wedding in Sydney, Australia, where they'll have to pretend to be a couple despite absolutely hating each other.

Home viewing charts inspire deja vu: “Anyone but You,” a hit as a PVOD release, just debuted at Netflix (under Sony’s deal to provide initial streaming rights, usually four months after theatrical release). It knocked out Netflix’s expensive “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver” from first place after two weeks, falling to #6.

Similarly, “ Dune: Part Two ” returned for its second week as #1 at both iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (which calculates by revenue).

Two new home-play debuts also made top 10 lists. “Cash Out” (Saban) is #9 at iTunes, renting at $6.99; starring John Travolta, the critically reviled title may be getting as much attention for its little-known director Ives. That’s a pseudonym for controversial producer Randall Emmett, perhaps best known as a former fiance of a “Vanderpump Rules” cast member and the subject of a scorching LA Times expose. “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part Two” (Warner Bros.), an animated DC Comics original, is #6 at Fandango for $19.99.

One recent VOD release with limited theatrical play that’s seen little interest is Woody Allen’s French-language “Coup de Chance” (MPI). The Parisian production received good reviews and debuted as a $6.99 rental, but it hasn’t shown up on any chart in its two weeks in release (iTunes lists 30 films).

At Netflix, Sony’s 2017 animated release “Smurfs: The Lost Village” debuted at #2. Top Netflix original this week at #3 is the documentary “Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut.” If you want to know what bowel movements say about you, this is the film to watch.

Here are 15 notable new movies you can stream right now:

'Anyone But You'

Like a young Tom Hanks with eight-pack abs, new king of the rom-com Glen Powell stars with Sydney Sweeney in this cheeky revamp of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" as two attractive folks who hate each other but pretend they're together to make their exes jealous at a destination wedding.

Where to watch: Apple TV+ .

'Bob Marley: One Love'

So good as Malcolm X in "One Night in Miami," Kingsley Ben-Adir notches another biopic highlight as reggae superstar Bob Marley . He's effective at capturing the musician even if the movie meanders with a narrative set during the 1970s, as Marley tries to use his songs to bring together a politically divided Jamaica.

Where to watch: Hulu .

'Late Night With the Devil'

David Dastmalchian has a hell of a role in this retro horror flick, starring as a 1970s late-night TV host in desperate need of ratings. For a Halloween special, he brings on a girl supposedly possessed by a demon in a gambit that brings in eyeballs but spirals supernaturally out of control for everyone involved.

Where to watch: Shudder , AMC+ .

'Lisa Frankenstein'

A horror rom-com about reanimated undead love and body-robbing shenanigans, "Lisa" is a playful and bloody teen-movie reimagining of the "Frankenstein" mythos . Kathryn Newton plays a 1980s goth girl and Cole Sprouse is a Victorian corpse resurrected amid lively characters and clever, sardonic dialogue.

'Frankenstein' forever: 'Lisa Frankenstein,' Oscar fave 'Poor Things' reclaim Mary Shelley's feminist mythos

'Migration'

In the animated comedy, Mack (voiced by Kumail Nanjiani) is the overprotective dad of a duck family who reluctantly agrees to a Jamaican getaway with his wife (Elizabeth Banks) and kids. However, they get sidetracked and wind up in New York City, where they meet a streetwise pigeon (Awkwafina) and a vicious chef.

Rudy Mancuso co-writes, directs and stars in this delightfully clever romantic comedy as a creative New Jersey man with synesthesia, experiencing melodies and rhythms around him in extraordinary fashion. It exacerbates problems with an ex (Francesca Reale) yet fascinates a new love interest (Camila Mendes).

Where to watch: Prime Video .

'Rebel Moon − Part Two: The Scargiver'

Do you live for slow-motion scenes of people harvesting grain? Then director Zack Snyder has the sci-fi sequel for you. The first "Rebel Moon" was derivative and the second one is just dull, with ex-warrior Kora (Sofia Boutella) leading a band of underdogs and farmers against the invading army of the villainous Imperium.

'The Stranger'

So, yeah, Quibi turned out to be pretty much a streaming disaster. Still, the content was pretty good and is now finding new homes as real movies, not a piecemeal experiment: Director Veena Sud's thriller ratchets up the suspense with Maika Monroe playing a rideshare driver and Dane DeHaan as the creepiest passenger ever.

'Talk to Me'

The best horror movie of last year was this haunting Australian indie chiller that introduced a new top-tier scream queen, Sophie Wilde, and a memorable scary-movie artifact: a mysterious embalmed hand that teens use to livestream freaky possessions that, of course, go terrifyingly awry.

Where to watch: Paramount+ .

A tune-filled, big-hearted storybook fantasy that's chock-full of Disney references. The animated musical features Ariana DeBose as an idealistic youngster who runs afoul of her kingdom's narcissistic ruler (Chris Pine) and befriends an energetic star to help rescue her people's wishes.

Where to watch: Disney+ .

'The Zone of Interest'

Director Jonathan Glazer 's best picture nominee centers on a German family going about their daily business. This banality, though, happens next door to Auschwitz, where gunshots, screams and the industrial sounds of ovens are the unnerving soundtrack that the characters ignore but you simply can't in this disturbing yet essential Holocaust drama.

Where to watch: Max .

Now streaming on:

"Home Alone" is a splendid movie title because it evokes all sorts of scary nostalgia. Being left home alone, when you were a kid, meant hearing strange noises and being afraid to look in the basement - but it also meant doing all the things that grownups would tell you to stop doing, if they were there. Things like staying up to watch Johnny Carson, eating all the ice cream, and sleeping in your parents' bed.

"Home Alone" is about an 8-year-old hero who does all of those things, but unfortunately he also single-handedly stymies two house burglars by booby-trapping the house. And they're the kinds of traps that any 8-year-old could devise, if he had a budget of tens of thousands of dollars and the assistance of a crew of movie special effects people.

The movie's screenplay is by John Hughes , who sometimes shows a genius for remembering what it was like to be young. His best movies, such as " Sixteen Candles ," " The Breakfast Club ," " Ferris Bueller's Day Off " and " Planes, Trains and Automobiles ," find a way to be funny while still staying somewhere within the boundaries of remote plausibility. This time, he strays so far from his premise that the movie suffers.

If "Home Alone" had limited itself to the things that might possibly happen to a forgotten 8-year-old, I think I would have liked it more. What I didn't enjoy was the subplot involving the burglars ( Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern ), who are immediately spotted by little Kevin (Macaulay Culkin), and made the targets of his cleverness.

The movie opens in the Chicago suburbs with a houseful of people on the eve of a big family Christmas vacation in Paris. There are relatives and kids everywhere, and when the family oversleeps and has to race to the airport, Kevin is somehow overlooked in the shuffle. When he wakes up later that morning, the house is empty. So he makes the best of it.

A real kid would probably be more frightened than this movie character, and would probably cry. He might also try calling someone, or asking a neighbor for help. But in the contrived world of this movie, the only neighbor is an old coot who is rumored to be the Snow Shovel Murderer, and the phone doesn't work. When Kevin's parents discover they've forgotten him, they find it impossible to get anyone to follow through on their panicked calls - if anyone did so, the movie would be over.

The plot is so implausible that it makes it hard for us to really care about the plight of the kid. What works in the other direction, however, and almost carries the day, is the gifted performance by young Macaulay Culkin, as Kevin. Culkin is the little boy who co-starred with John Candy in " Uncle Buck ," and here he has to carry almost the whole movie. He has lots of challenging acting scenes, and he's up to them. I'm sure he got lots of help from director Chris Columbus , but he's got the stuff to begin with. He's such a confident and gifted little actor that I'd like to see him in a story I could care more about.

"Home Alone" isn't that story. When the burglars invade Kevin's home, they find themselves running a gamut of booby traps so elaborate they could have been concocted by Rube Goldberg - or by the berserk father in " Last House on the Left ." Because all plausibility is gone, we sit back, detached, to watch stunt men and special effects guys take over a movie that promised to be the kind of story audiences could identify with.

Anyone Home?

Suburbia?  More like disturbia!  Sometimes that American Dream that we all chase can become a living, breathing nightmare.  Don’t believe me? Just watch the social criticism that is the backbone of first time director Patrick Cunningham ’s new independent horror film, Anyone Home? , now on VOD.

The terror on the screen here is deeply psychological and intense and, thanks to its domestic situation as one single mother struggles to keep up with the Joneses due to her own fantasies, it all comes home to roost in a completely satisfying and unsettling manner.

Co-written with William Day Frank , Cunningham ’s movie explores the fear that resides in desolation as actresses Monique Gabriela Curnen ( The Dark Knight ) and Kathy Baker ( Picket Fences ), alongside actors Luke Ganalon ( Grey’s Anatomy ) and Jon Jon Briones ( Sons of Anarchy ), give charged performances that echo out into the sand dunes of mental illness as one woman goes for broke in living the life she sees in magazines. {googleads}

Anyone Home? (also known as Modern Home ) is a psychological thriller that is unlike most horror releases on the VOD market.  The pressure placed on one single mother, who is living in an unsold model home that is nestled in a tiny desert town and is expected to keep it ready for show at all times, is unending and impacts her own son.  Jaime ( Ganalon ), tragically enough, has to monitor her own prescriptions for her bi-polar disorder when he is not tracking down a lone dog in the wilderness or playing with whatever he finds tossed aside in the vacant development.

Times are hard for both of them.  Add to that the dangers lurking on the outskirts of town, thanks to the focused fetish charge of an RV-dwelling strange character played by Jasper Cole ( American Horror Story ) and you have a recipe for horror . . . except this new breed of horror comes from some unexpected places.  That’s how exclusionary the American Dream is - especially for minorities.

Anyone Home?

And, alongside some disturbing images from Cunningham ’s own camera, Camila simply snaps inside a reclusive suburbia that is not yet even begun.  From some powerful hallucinations to the epic surrealism captured thanks to the desert location, she can’t deal with the pressure and begins throwing up the pills, diving headfirst into a pretend life that is counter to the one she’s already struggling to be involved in.

Thick with trippy visuals and a Twin Peaks -soaked atmosphere, this thriller packs a hard-hitting punch right in the gut as it extends its reach right to your very own door.  Anyone Home? is now on VOD and Digital HD by Gravitas Ventures .

A man in a short-sleeve dark blue shirt stands next to a woman in a floral bikini top and shorts around a table full of pastries.

Greetings, Polygon readers! Each week, we round up the most notable new releases to streaming and VOD, highlighting the biggest and best new movies for you to watch at home.

This week, Monkey Man , the new action thriller starring and directed by Dev Patel, makes its debut on VOD. That’s not the only recent release coming to streaming this week, as the sapphic crime thriller Love Lies Bleeding starring Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian is also available to purchase and rent this weekend. The romantic comedy Anyone but You and the dark comedy drama Miller’s Girl come to Netflix, while the debut horror thriller Humane , directed by Caitlin Cronenberg, arrives on Shudder.

Here’s everything new that’s available to watch this weekend!

New on Netflix

Anyone but you.

Where to watch: Available to stream on Netflix

A man and a woman cling to a buoy in a bay with the Sydney Opera House visible in the background.

Genre: Romantic comedy Run time: 1h 44m Director: Will Gluck Cast: Sydney Sweeney, Glen Powell, Alexandra Shipp

Sydney Sweeney ( Euphoria ) and Glen Powell ( Top Gun: Maverick ) star in this romantic comedy loosely based on William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing as Bea and Ben, two young singles who become cold toward one another after an otherwise great first date. After unexpectedly being reunited at a destination wedding in Australia, the pair agree to pretend to be dating in order to ward off their exes. Shenanigans ensue!

Miller’s Girl

An older man (Martin Freeman) sitting close next to a younger woman (Jenna Ortega) holding a cup.

Genre: Black comedy drama Run time: 1h 33m Director: Jade Halley Bartlett Cast: Martin Freeman, Jenna Ortega, Dagmara Domińczyk

Martin Freeman ( The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ) and Jenna Ortega ( Wednesday ) star in this thriller about a high school writing teacher who is seduced by a rich, bored, and manipulative young student. Things obviously go very, very badly.

From our review :

What Miller’s Girl does best — and what gives Ortega the chance to absolutely own this movie — is capture the particular era of adolescence where girls can easily swing back and forth between adulthood and childhood without warning. Ortega gets the chance here to play an outright predatory vamp and a giggling, shy schoolgirl without the sense that either one is a front or a put-on for Cairo. Her adult personality isn’t fully formed yet, and while she’s trying out faces the way she tries out words like “vituperative” in her writing, they’re still all part of her — and they’re all part of the reason Mr. Miller should know better than to engage with her as anything but a student.

New on Shudder

Where to watch: Available to stream on Shudder

A group of concerned-looking men and women seated at the far end of a kitchen island.

Genre: Horror Run time: 1h 33m Director: Caitlin Cronenberg Cast: Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Sebastian Chacon

The feature debut from Caitlin Cronenberg is a horror thriller worthy of the family name. Set during a worldwide ecological collapse, Humane follows estranged siblings who learn that their father and mother have chosen to take part in a nationwide euthanasia program as a form of public service. When things go awry, the family will have to choose one of their own to offer up as a substitute participant. Naturally, things get personal.

New to rent

Where to watch: Available to rent on Amazon , Apple , and Vudu

An angry man scowling from behind a pair of velvet drapes.

Genre: Action thriller Run time: 2h 1m Director: Dev Patel Cast: Dev Patel, Sharlto Copley, Pitobash

Dev Patel stars in his directorial debut as an unnamed street kid who, years after his village was burned to the ground, earns a living as a monkey-masked fighter in an underground boxing club. He embarks on a campaign of brutal violence to exact revenge on the men responsible.

When Monkey Man finally shifts into gear for its action scenes, there’s a clearer vision at work — though perhaps “clear” isn’t the word for it. Patel, working with fight choreographer Brahim Chab and cinematographer Sharone Meir ( Whiplash ), shoots the fights up close and personal with a frenetic handheld camera that judders and whip-pans with the force of every blow, and deftly stitches these shots together into head-spinning, unbroken runs of movement. Influenced by Korean, Indonesian, and Bollywood action movies , what the style sometimes lacks in clarity it makes up in ferocity and impact. The desperation of Kid’s first bathroom battle with Rana is brilliantly conveyed (Kher is fantastic in an old-school heavy role), and the extended climax is intermittently stunning, although the editing sometimes struggles to maintain focus when things get busy.

Love Lies Bleeding

Two women sitting next to one another holding beer bottles in a boxing ring.

Genre: Romantic thriller Run time: 1h 44m Director: Rose Glass Cast: Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brian, Jena Malone

The new thriller from Saint Maud director Rose Glass follows Lou (Kristen Stewart), a reclusive gym manager who falls in love with Jackie (Katy O’Brian), an ambitious bodybuilder who passes through town on her way to a Las Vegas competition. When Jackie runs afoul of Lou’s criminal father (Ed Harris), the two must find a way to escape their precarious situation in hopes of building a better life together.

Arthur the King

Where to watch: Available to rent on Amazon , Apple, and Vudu

A man sitting outside next to a dog.

Genre: Adventure Run time: 1h 47m Director: Simon Cellan Jones Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Simu Liu, Juliet Rylance

Mark Wahlberg stars in this new adventure thriller as Michael, a professional adventure racer desperate for one last chance at winning. After convincing a sponsor to back him, he and his team of fellow adventurers embark on a grueling 435-mile endurance race through the Dominican Republic. Pushed to his limits, Michael befriends a wounded stray dog he nicknames Arthur, who inspires him to press forward when all hope of winning seems lost.

Housekeeping for Beginners

Two men in a suits and two women in formal attire seated across two older gentlemen at a table with a larger ledger in-between.

Genre: Drama Run time: 1h 47m Director: Goran Stolevski Cast: Anamaria Marinca, Alina Serban, Samson Selim

This family drama from Of an Age director Goran Stolevski follows the story of Dita (Anamaria Marinca), a woman who promises her ailing partner Suada (Alina Serban) on her deathbed to raise her children. Having never wanted to be mother before, Dita is nonetheless faced with the challenge of opening her heart and forging a bond with her new family.

A young girl looks sullen over a cake topped with lit candles.

Genre: Drama Run time: 1h 35m Director: Lila Avilés Cast: Naíma Sentíes, Montserrat Marañón, Marisol Gasé

This heartfelt family drama centers on Sol (Naíma Sentíes), a 7-year-old girl spending the day at her grandfather’s house while her mother, aunts, and relatives prepare a surprise birthday party for her father. As the day wears on, Sol slowly realizes that the tragic truth under the otherwise joyous occasion, and is forced to reckon with how her life and world are about to change forever.
