CASE STUDY, by Graeme Macrae Burnet

To get to Primrose Hill from central London, you take the Tube to Chalk Farm Station, exit to your right toward a cafe and an off-license, and climb a path to an overpass above train tracks. The path is called, rather unassumingly, Bridge Approach, and a five-minute walk leads to Primrose Hill. I happened to live in these parts for three years, and I crossed the overpass twice a day most days. Just to the south is the Pembroke Castle pub, where Liam Gallagher of Oasis was once arrested, in 1998. Another neighborhood tippler, Kingsley Amis, favored the Queen’s at the corner of St. George’s Terrace, according to his biographer Zachary Leader, who printed his monthly tab. From my balcony I could see the phone box where Sylvia Plath would desperately call Ted Hughes at his lover’s flat in her last days. It is a quiet neighborhood, but one dense with intrigue and peopled by famous, messy and tortured artistic personages.

The events of Graeme Macrae Burnet’s fourth novel, “Case Study,” are set off by a suicide in the 1960s by a young woman named Veronica, who jumps from the Bridge Approach overpass and is struck by the 4:45 train to High Barnet. (I am not sure that High Barnet trains, rather than Edgware-bound ones, run on this track, nor that the overpass itself, rather than just the path that approaches it, is called Bridge Approach, but these are the sorts of possible slight inaccuracies that Burnet and his not entirely reliable narrators relish.) An investigation into Veronica’s death and the man who might have been responsible for it — her therapist, Arthur Collins Braithwaite, whose office is on Primrose Hill — forms the substance of the narrative. Like Burnet’s previous novel, “ His Bloody Project ” (2016), “Case Study” was nominated for the Booker Prize and consists largely of purportedly found documents.

The would-be Miss Marple of Burnet’s loopy detective story is Veronica’s unnamed younger sister, who, under the alias Rebecca Smyth, becomes Braithwaite’s patient to find out if he drove Veronica to take her own life. Rebecca details her five sessions in notebooks that decades later end up in the hands of a writer named GMB, our frame narrator, who is researching Braithwaite for a potential biography. Now cast into obscurity, the (fictional) therapist was once a figure of note, appearing on BBC chat shows and publishing the books “Untherapy,” a best seller, and “Kill Your Self,” which Rebecca calls “a jumble of incomprehensible sentences, each having no discernible relationship to its neighbors.” Still, we are told by GMB, “Kill Your Self” “captured the zeitgeist,” acquired for its author a cult following from which he drew a lucrative pool of patients, and “if anything, the impenetrability of certain passages only served to confirm the author’s genius.”

“Case Study” consists of a preface, in which GMB explains how he received the notebooks (from Rebecca’s cousin, who noticed a blog post by GMB on Braithwaite); the five notebooks themselves, one of which includes a chapter clipped from “Untherapy” about a patient who is clearly Veronica; five biographical chapters about Braithwaite by GMB, inserted between the notebooks; and a postscript, in which GMB ventures south to pay a visit to the Pembroke Castle. The elegant nested structure is one of the novel’s chief appeals. So is the contrast between Rebecca’s narrative voice, characterized by what GMB calls “a certain kooky élan,” and the cool tone of GMB’s Life of Braithwaite. What emerges is a comedy of identities tried on and discarded. Given the number of suicides that mark the story, it’s a comedy with dark underpinnings.

Rebecca lives with her father, a retired engineer, and their housekeeper, and works as a receptionist for a talent agent. Her mother died when she was 15, falling off a cliff before her eyes, during a family holiday in Devon. Given that Rebecca is the only witness to the fall, and that she admits to fantasizing about pushing someone off the cliff the sentence before recounting her mother’s death, we can’t help suspecting that she might have done it herself. But we have no more reason to doubt it than the rest of her story, and that’s part of the fun: The whole tale might be a hoax.

Unlike Veronica, who was a doctoral student in mathematics at Cambridge, Rebecca is not very ambitious. She’s an erstwhile fiction writer, having given up on writing after the one story she published in Women’s Journal didn’t have editors banging down the door for more. She is a homebody, happy to tend to her father and not be a “Modern Independent Woman.” She attests to being a virgin, and so becoming Rebecca Smyth means becoming someone else: the sort of woman who puts on lipstick, attends glamorous parties and drinks gin with gentlemen at the Pembridge Castle (as she calls the Pembroke Castle). Since she is not really that sort of woman, drinking even a little gin causes her to vomit in the bathroom the first time she tries it.

Braithwaite is also someone who puts on new identities, but at the same time he’s a recognizable English type: the humble boy from northern England who goes down to Oxford after the war and reinvents himself as a kind of romantic rogue. “Case Study” has a lot in common with the novels of Vladimir Nabokov and Roberto Bolaño, in which invented characters pass through tumultuous episodes of literary history that never quite happened, though it seems as if they should have. Braithwaite brushes against real-life figures, engaging in hostile correspondence with the psychiatrist R.D. Laing and becoming a confidant of the actor Dirk Bogarde. After an overblown scandal consumes his therapeutic practice and sets him off on a bender, he winds up back at the home of his father (another suicide) in the North, where he writes his unpublished memoir, “My Self and Other Strangers.” It is the source, we are told, of GMB’s biographical reconstructions.

“Case Study” is a diverting novel, overflowing with clever plays on and inversions of tropes of English intellectual and social life during the postwar decades. As such, it is not exactly an excursion into undiscovered literary terrain. Reading Burnet’s doubly mediated metafiction of North London neurotics and decadents, I often longed to turn back to the shelf for the real thing: fictions by Doris Lessing, Kingsley and Martin Amis, Muriel Spark, Jenny Diski, Julian Barnes, Alan Hollinghurst, Zadie Smith or Rachel Cusk; biographies of Plath and Hughes; films of kitchen-sink realism starring Bogarde and Laurence Harvey, with scripts by Harold Pinter; or even the documentaries of Adam Curtis, in which Laing often makes a cameo. It’s a compliment to put “Case Study” in that company and no insult to say that Burnet must have done his homework to get there. I imagine he lives in a flat full of piles of yellowing copies of The Times Literary Supplement, every issue a catalog of obscurities from across time. Humble children from the provinces who want to reinvent themselves have to get the stuff of their daydreams from somewhere.

by Graeme Macrae Burnet ‧ RELEASE DATE: Nov. 1, 2022

A brisk and engaging novel that wears itself thin on the grindstone of its own conceit.

A provocative send-up of midcentury British mores and the roots of modern psychotherapy.

Toward the end of 2019, GMB, a character with the author's initials, receives an email from one Martin Grey, who has in his possession several notebooks he believes GMB might find of interest. Mr. Grey asserts that the notebooks were written by his cousin about Collins Braithwaite, the notorious and now largely forgotten “ enfant terrible of the so-called anti-psychiatry movement of the 1960s,” on whom GMB has recently published a blog post. According to Grey, the notebooks contain evidence of near-criminal misconduct concerning Braithwaite’s involvement in the suicide of the diarist’s older sister, Veronica. GMB’s research assures him of the notebooks’ authenticity, if not their veracity, and he presents their contents verbatim, interspersed with sections of his own outline of Braithwaite’s salacious life and ignoble death. From the plinth of this metatextual introduction, the book dives into the “kooky élan” of a thoroughly middle-class young woman—the diarist—as she infiltrates Braithwaite’s office under the nom de guerre Rebecca Smyth. Rebecca is bent on uncovering the truth about Braithwaite’s therapeutic practice though she’s unsure what purpose this truth would serve. However, over the course of the five notebooks, Rebecca’s rapid descent into true depression coupled with her increasing difficulty in keeping her original identity separate from her assumed self become the driving narrative. As the novel progresses, the author’s layering of his fictional characters’ unverifiable testimony, frank deception, and self-aggrandizing half-truths with significant historical figures of the time—like R.D. Laing and Dirk Bogarde—and GMB's omnipresent frame narrative overlap to the extent that it's hard to tell not just whose perception to trust, but which among all these counterfeit identities is real. As beguiling as Rebecca’s wry domestic critique can be, the book’s star is clearly the carefully constructed unreliability Burnet imbues at every level of his writing. This results in a novel that strives toward the biggest of questions—in the absence of the Cartesian ego Braithwaite seeks to slay, is there anything at all underneath our masks?—but lacks the character-driven empathy that would encourage us to care about the answer.

New York Times Bestseller

by Kristin Hannah ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 6, 2024

A dramatic, vividly detailed reconstruction of a little-known aspect of the Vietnam War.

A young woman’s experience as a nurse in Vietnam casts a deep shadow over her life.

When we learn that the farewell party in the opening scene is for Frances “Frankie” McGrath’s older brother—“a golden boy, a wild child who could make the hardest heart soften”—who is leaving to serve in Vietnam in 1966, we feel pretty certain that poor Finley McGrath is marked for death. Still, it’s a surprise when the fateful doorbell rings less than 20 pages later. His death inspires his sister to enlist as an Army nurse, and this turn of events is just the beginning of a roller coaster of a plot that’s impressive and engrossing if at times a bit formulaic. Hannah renders the experiences of the young women who served in Vietnam in all-encompassing detail. The first half of the book, set in gore-drenched hospital wards, mildewed dorm rooms, and boozy officers’ clubs, is an exciting read, tracking the transformation of virginal, uptight Frankie into a crack surgical nurse and woman of the world. Her tensely platonic romance with a married surgeon ends when his broken, unbreathing body is airlifted out by helicopter; she throws her pent-up passion into a wild affair with a soldier who happens to be her dead brother’s best friend. In the second part of the book, after the war, Frankie seems to experience every possible bad break. A drawback of the story is that none of the secondary characters in her life are fully three-dimensional: Her dismissive, chauvinistic father and tight-lipped, pill-popping mother, her fellow nurses, and her various love interests are more plot devices than people. You’ll wish you could have gone to Vegas and placed a bet on the ending—while it’s against all the odds, you’ll see it coming from a mile away.

JAMES

by Percival Everett ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 19, 2024

One of the noblest characters in American literature gets a novel worthy of him.

Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as told from the perspective of a more resourceful and contemplative Jim than the one you remember.

This isn’t the first novel to reimagine Twain’s 1885 masterpiece, but the audacious and prolific Everett dives into the very heart of Twain’s epochal odyssey, shifting the central viewpoint from that of the unschooled, often credulous, but basically good-hearted Huck to the more enigmatic and heroic Jim, the Black slave with whom the boy escapes via raft on the Mississippi River. As in the original, the threat of Jim’s being sold “down the river” and separated from his wife and daughter compels him to run away while figuring out what to do next. He's soon joined by Huck, who has faked his own death to get away from an abusive father, ramping up Jim’s panic. “Huck was supposedly murdered and I’d just run away,” Jim thinks. “Who did I think they would suspect of the heinous crime?” That Jim can, as he puts it, “[do] the math” on his predicament suggests how different Everett’s version is from Twain’s. First and foremost, there's the matter of the Black dialect Twain used to depict the speech of Jim and other Black characters—which, for many contemporary readers, hinders their enjoyment of his novel. In Everett’s telling, the dialect is a put-on, a manner of concealment, and a tactic for survival. “White folks expect us to sound a certain way and it can only help if we don’t disappoint them,” Jim explains. He also discloses that, in violation of custom and law, he learned to read the books in Judge Thatcher’s library, including Voltaire and John Locke, both of whom, in dreams and delirium, Jim finds himself debating about human rights and his own humanity. With and without Huck, Jim undergoes dangerous tribulations and hairbreadth escapes in an antebellum wilderness that’s much grimmer and bloodier than Twain’s. There’s also a revelation toward the end that, however stunning to devoted readers of the original, makes perfect sense.

After 35 years as an academic, I have come to the conclusion that there is a magic in the way Harvard cases are written. Cases go from specific to general, to show students that business situations are amenable to hard headed analysis that then generalize to larger theoretical insights. The students love it! Hertz CEO Kathryn Marinello with CFO Jamere Jackson and other members of the executive team in 2017

Top 40 Most Popular Case Studies of 2021

Two cases about Hertz claimed top spots in 2021's Top 40 Most Popular Case Studies

Two cases on the uses of debt and equity at Hertz claimed top spots in the CRDT’s (Case Research and Development Team) 2021 top 40 review of cases.

Hertz (A) took the top spot. The case details the financial structure of the rental car company through the end of 2019. Hertz (B), which ranked third in CRDT’s list, describes the company’s struggles during the early part of the COVID pandemic and its eventual need to enter Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The success of the Hertz cases was unprecedented for the top 40 list. Usually, cases take a number of years to gain popularity, but the Hertz cases claimed top spots in their first year of release. Hertz (A) also became the first ‘cooked’ case to top the annual review, as all of the other winners had been web-based ‘raw’ cases.

Besides introducing students to the complicated financing required to maintain an enormous fleet of cars, the Hertz cases also expanded the diversity of case protagonists. Kathyrn Marinello was the CEO of Hertz during this period and the CFO, Jamere Jackson is black.

Sandwiched between the two Hertz cases, Coffee 2016, a perennial best seller, finished second. “Glory, Glory, Man United!” a case about an English football team’s IPO made a surprise move to number four.  Cases on search fund boards, the future of malls,  Norway’s Sovereign Wealth fund, Prodigy Finance, the Mayo Clinic, and Cadbury rounded out the top ten.

Other year-end data for 2021 showed:

  • Online “raw” case usage remained steady as compared to 2020 with over 35K users from 170 countries and all 50 U.S. states interacting with 196 cases.
  • Fifty four percent of raw case users came from outside the U.S..
  • The Yale School of Management (SOM) case study directory pages received over 160K page views from 177 countries with approximately a third originating in India followed by the U.S. and the Philippines.
  • Twenty-six of the cases in the list are raw cases.
  • A third of the cases feature a woman protagonist.
  • Orders for Yale SOM case studies increased by almost 50% compared to 2020.
  • The top 40 cases were supervised by 19 different Yale SOM faculty members, several supervising multiple cases.

CRDT compiled the Top 40 list by combining data from its case store, Google Analytics, and other measures of interest and adoption.

All of this year’s Top 40 cases are available for purchase from the Yale Management Media store .

What are Consulting Casebooks?

Consulting casebooks are documents that MBA consulting clubs put together to help their members prepare for consulting case interviews. Consulting casebooks provide some case interview strategies and tips, but they mostly contain case interview practice cases.

While consulting casebooks contain tons of practice cases, there is quite a bit of variety in the sources and formats of these cases.

Some practice cases are taken from actual consulting interviews given by consulting firms. These are the best types of cases to practice with because they closely simulate the length and difficulty of an actual case interview. Other practice cases may be written by the consulting club’s officers. These cases are less realistic, but can still offer great practice.

The formats of the practice cases in consulting casebooks also vary significantly.

Some practice cases are written in a question and answer format. This type of format makes it easy to practice the case by yourself, without a case partner. Other practices cases are written in a dialogue format. These cases are better for practicing with a case interview partner.

How do I use Casebooks to Practice Case Interviews?

How you should use consulting casebooks depends on whether you are practicing cases by yourself or practicing cases with a case partner.

Practicing Cases by Yourself

If you are trying to practice cases by yourself, you will need to find cases that are written in a question and answer format. Only in this format can you read the question, answer it, and then move onto the next question without getting any case spoilers.

To practice cases by yourself, read the case background. Then, summarize the case information out loud, verify the objective to yourself, and then ask clarifying questions out loud.

You likely won’t be able to answer any questions that you have by yourself, but talking to yourself out loud is good practice because it simulates what you would do in a real case interview.

Afterwards, take a few minutes to write out your case interview framework. Treat this like a real case interview, so don’t give yourself unlimited time to think about how you would structure your approach. When you have your framework written out, talk through it like you are explaining it to an interviewer.

Next, move onto the first case question. For each case question, talk through your thinking out loud as if you were in a real interview. If there is math involved, make sure you talk through your calculations out loud.

Once you have finished answering each case question, provide your final recommendation out loud. Make sure to suggest potential next steps.

Now that you have finished the case, you can review your answers and compare them to the sample answers. Try to identify areas of improvement or things that you could have done better.

For a comprehensive guide on how to practice case interviews by yourself, without a case partner, read this article .

Practicing Cases with a Case Partner

If you are practicing with a case partner, decide who is going to be giving the case and who is going to be receiving the case.

If you are giving the case, read the entire case information carefully. It may be helpful to read through everything twice so that you are familiar with all of the information and can answer any question that your partner asks you to clarify.

As the person giving the case, you need to be the case expert.

You should become familiar with the overall direction of the case. In other words, you should know what the major questions of the case are and what the major areas of investigation are. This will help you run the mock case interview more smoothly.

Depending on whether you want the case interview to be interviewer-led or candidate-led, you will need to decide how much you want to steer the direction of the case.

If your partner gets stuck and is taking a long time, you may need to step in and provide suggestions or hints. If your partner is proceeding down a wrong direction, you will need to direct them towards the right direction.

Caveats to Using MBA Consulting Casebooks

In general, MBA consulting casebooks are great resources because they are free and provide tons of practice cases to hone your case interview skills. However, there are several caveats that you should be aware of.

1. Similarity to Real Case Interviews

Some cases in MBA consulting casebooks are not representative of actual case interviews because they are written by consulting club officers instead of interviewers from consulting firms.

For example, some cases may be too short or too long in length. Some cases could also be too technical or may require you to have specialized knowledge. If you come across a case that is way too complicated or way too simple, keep in mind that the case may not be representative of an actual case interview.

2. Quality of Sample Answers

While consulting casebooks provide sample solutions, these answers are often not the best or highest quality answers. If you use the answers in casebooks as your benchmark for what a great answer looks like, you may not be learning the best way to answer case interview questions.

3. Ease of Use

Consulting casebooks are all written in different formats and by different people. Therefore, it can be challenging to find cases that you can consistently use to practice cases by yourself or with a partner.

Case information may be written in an unorganized way. The main questions of the case may be hidden in the case background information or in the answers. You’ll have to learn the best way to read and digest each case in each casebook.

Recommended Case Interview Prep Resources

Here are the resources we recommend to learn the most robust, effective case interview strategies in the least time-consuming way:

  • The Ultimate Case Interview Workbook (available on Amazon): Perfect for intermediates struggling with frameworks, case math, or generating business insights. No need to find a case partner – these drills, practice problems, and full-length cases can all be done by yourself.

Harnessing the power of books

In November, our Group Ethics and Compliance team met in Oxford for its biennial conference, bringing together colleagues from 13 different countries. At the conference, the team participated in a volunteering event with our charity partner, Book Aid International .

We are proud to have a long-standing charity partnership with Book Aid International, whose mission is to ensure that everyone has access to books to enrich, improve, and change their lives for the better. Last year, we donated almost 185,000 books to Book Aid International, supporting them to send more than 1.1 million books to over 180 partners in 26 countries across the world. These donations provided educational and enrichment opportunities to readers in thousands of schools, libraries, universities, refugee camps, prisons, and hospitals.

Speaking about the partnership, Clair Bradley , Trusts and Corporates Manager at Book Aid International, said:

‘The books from OUP have incredible value for everyone we send them to. They make an amazing difference to people's lives...they support education and healthcare, but also bring joy to people. We know books spark imagination and inspire people - and it's all with the help of OUP which is amazing.’

After learning about the impact and reach of Book Aid International’s work, our Group Ethics and Compliance team stamped and packed 1,000 books to be distributed to communities in need. Included with the books were hand-made bookmarks and handwritten notes for the recipients.

We look forward to continuing our support for Book Aid International in the future, as they work towards delivering sustainable change and creating more opportunities for people to access books, regardless of their location or circumstances.

‘It goes to the heart of our mission, and I'm so pleased the team had the opportunity to see and feel our products, and experience first-hand the impact these books have on people's lives.’

Case based research in tourism, travel, hospitality and events: Rethinking theory and practice

Publisher: springer, book editors.

  • Prof Marianna Sigala, University of Piraeus, Greece
  • Dr Marcela Fang, William Angliss Institute
  • Mrs Anastasia Yeark, Kaplan Business School
  • Dr Julia N. Albrecht, University of Otago
  • Dr Oscar Vorobjovas-Pinta, Edith Cowan University

Aims of the book

After the successful implementation of the first book (Sigala, Yeark, Presbury, Fang & Smith, 2021) titled Case-based research in tourism, travel, hospitality and events , the case study project is back with the aim to produce a second book in 2022. The repercussions of COVID-19 on tourism have magnified the need and urgency to use case studies as a research and pedagogical method. Case based research empowers scholars to investigate issues in greater depth in order to explore, challenge and update the applicability and validity of existing theories and knowledge. Case-based instructional methods can also better equip tourism, hospitality and events graduates in the post-COVID-19 era with industry-specific and transferable skills by understanding and relating theories to practice (Sigala, 2011). In addition, by disrupting and transforming all tourism stakeholders, the pandemic has generated numerous opportunities for ‘case studies’ to be explored.

Case study based research has been long recognised as a robust and solid research methodology for not only understanding and critically analysing industry practices but also for theorising and building new knowledge. Since their first article (Brodie et al, 2008) arguing the importance to build theories by linking theory and practice, a series of papers have emerged (e.g. Brodie & De Chernatony, 2009; Brodie & Gustafsson, 2016; Brodie et al., 2011; George, 2019) showing the value of combining the theoretical language and perspectives with those of industry professionals for advancing research and theorising in various contexts such as branding, strategy, service research, marketing and service-dominant logic.

Case-based research and industry case studies form an important part of educational practice. As an instructional method, learning from and through case studies is more engaging, attractive and interesting. Such learning method can also enable students to better understand the theory, develop their critical and analytical skills, and advance their problem-solving and theory-development skills (Bryan & Clegg, 2019). As an assessment method, case studies can reinforce active and constructivist learning approaches. It also prevents students’ passive memorising and academic misconduct issues. In this vein, case studies as a learning evaluation instrument is an ideal method both in blended and virtual educational contexts.

This book aims to exploit the fertile research ground that the COVID-19 pandemic has created for case-based research and education. The book specifically calls for case studies that aim to rethink tourism theory and practice in the next normal. However, the book is not dedicated only to COVID-19 related research. The book will also consider and publish worthy cases relating to any aspects pertaining to the current wider tourism industry (i.e. tourism, travel, events, festivals, cruising, destinations, hotels, resorts and hospitality), but all cases would need to reflect how their findings and implications relate to the post-COVID-19 tourism reality. To that end, the book is looking for case studies that investigate topical and contemporary industry challenges and practices, and debate their implications in the next normal. The published cases should help us advance tourism research and enrich our instructional and pedagogical practices.

Case studies and their teaching notes, will be published as book chapters in a book to be published by Springer later in 2022. The case study publication project is endorsed and supported by CAUTHE .

Submission guidelines

Case studies need to focus on the tourism, travel, hospitality and events sectors. Case studies can refer to any subject area and/or disciplinary field (e.g., marketing, strategy, human resources, operations, technology, and finance). Case studies should reflect the specific theme of the book (i.e. rethinking of theory and practice) and debate why such rethinking is required due to current changes such as the COVID-19 repercussions.

All case studies and teaching notes will undergo a double-blind peer review process by two or more reviewers. Authors can submit more than one case study, however, all case studies must be original work. Case studies are not eligible for consideration if published previously in either abstract, paper, or manuscript format, nationally and internationally. The editors may use authentication software for checking the originality of submissions received.

Submissions must include a Case Study and associated Teaching Note . Each research Case Study should be limited to 5,500 words. Teaching Note should be limited to 1,000 words and provide instructions to scholars on how to use the case study for educational purposes.

Case studies must be factual, and be developed from multiple sources, including primary sourced data (e.g., observations, interviews). Case studies can also refer to a fictional company, destination, organisation and/or other stakeholders. Case studies referring to real cases should be accompanied by a release form signed-off by the involved company/stakeholder providing permission to use and publish proprietary and/or personal content. Secondary-source cases would need to make a significant contribution beyond the initial secondary sources.

The accompanying Teaching Note should apply recent theoretical perspectives to the appropriate learning activities detailed.

Submissions must be prepared in accordance with the following guidelines specifying the structure and content of case studies and teaching notes. Submissions must not exceed 6,500 words in total, including a bibliography and any appendix.

Case Study requirements

  • Maximum 5,500 words
  • Abstract (150 words)
  • Keywords: maximum of 7
  • Outline the purpose of the case study
  • Provide a scenario of the case study
  • Describe the field/context of research (e.g., an overview of the company)
  • Outline the issues and findings of the case study without the specific details
  • Identify the theory that will be used
  • Introduce the protagonist(s) facing a decision dilemma
  • Note any assumptions made (e.g., it has been assumed that…)
  • Check that the opening paragraph contains information on what, who, why, where and when
  • Identify the problems found in the case
  • Each analysis of a problem should be supported by facts given in the case together with the relevant theory and course concepts
  • Search for the underlying problems and not only the symptoms
  • It can be divided into sub-sections, one for each problem
  • Tell the whole story in a chronological order
  • Explain and give details of the issues faced by the firm
  • more than one side to the story
  • revolves around at least one major issue that is easy to identify but not necessarily easy to resolve
  • uses quotations from interviewees or stakeholders of the case
  • Write neutrally
  • Do not provide any diagnosis or prognosis
  • Use sub-headings to allow the reader to follow the story and find information easily
  • Do not provide any analysis or ‘lessons learned’ in the case. Leave that for the teaching note.
  • Summarise the major problem(s)
  • Identify alternative solutions/scenarios/dilemmas to this/these major problem(s) (there is likely to be more than one solution per problem)
  • Briefly outline each alternative solution and then evaluate it in terms of its advantages and disadvantages
  • No need to refer to theory or coursework here
  • Sum up the main points from the findings and discussion
  • Graphic or visual aids such as budgets, organisational charts, mission statements or technical specifications
  • Press releases
  • (online) Videos
  • Interviews, podcasts

Teaching Note requirements

  • Maximum 1,000 words
  • a brief description of the case and its context
  • 2-4 specific objectives
  • explain why these are important and relevant for the course
  • target group, courses or class level/ level of difficulty for which the case was written
  • identify specific prerequisites (what are the students assumed to master before the case is taught). If multiple target audiences, discuss different teaching strategies
  • ask ‘good’ trigger questions
  • provide suggestions for group work, student assignments, role-playing, case study based exam etc
  • provide suggestions for a teaching plan: suggested class time, broken down by topics, an indication of the case’s demands on course time-tabling
  • Provide an update of ‘what actually happened’, if this is known
  • Provide examples of REAL sample answers, both outstanding ones and marginal ones (or even incorrect ones)
  • A case may not have a single correct answer. Try to highlight the diversity of opinions and approaches
  • The analysis should offer comprehensive answers to the list of questions and should, at least, be as thorough as one would expect from the best student
  • If the case includes quantitative data, it might suggest ways of utilising the data, and should ideally include the details of any spread-sheet analysis. At the very least it should indicate the techniques to be used for analysing the data.
  • suggested additional readings should be listed if it is necessary (or helpful) for students to read text or other material in conjunction with the case
  • If the case study has been used for educational purposes already, then it should indicate how the case worked with different student groups, where possible indicating the case’s suitability for written assessment or examination, role-playing, or other forms of use
  • Where known, it might also include the actual outcome of the case situation and some follow-up facts

Submission platform

  • Submit the Case Study and the Teaching Note as a single file .
  • Make sure the file does not include any author(s) details as it will be used for the blind peer review process.
  • Submit your case study and teaching note at Easychair .

About the author

Linda anne silvestri.

As a child, I always dreamed of becoming either a nurse or teacher. Initially, I chose to become a nurse because I wanted to help others, especially those who were ill. Then I realized that both of my dreams could come true: I could be both a nurse and a teacher. So I pursued my dreams.

I received my diploma in nursing at Cooley Dickinson Hospital School of Nursing in Northampton, Massachusetts. Afterwards, I worked at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts and cared for clients in acute medical-surgical units, the intensive care unit, the emergency department, pediatric units, and other acute care units. Later, I received an associate degree from Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, Massachusetts, my BSN from American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts, and my MSN from Anna Maria College, Paxton, Massachusetts, with a dual major in Nursing Management and Patient Education. I received my PhD candidacy status in Nursing at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and I am doing research related to success on the NCLEX®. I am also a member of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key International Honour Society, the Western Institute of Nursing, and the Eastern Nursing Research Society.

As a native of Springfield, Massachusetts, I began my teaching career as an instructor of medical-surgical nursing and leadership-management nursing at Baystate Medical Center School of Nursing in 1981. In 1989 I relocated to Rhode Island and began teaching medical-surgical nursing and psychiatric nursing to RN and LPN students at the Community College of Rhode Island. Later in 1994, I began teaching nursing at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island and remain there as an adjunct faculty member.

My experiences as a student, nursing educator, and item writer for the NCLEX exams, aided me as I developed a comprehensive review course to prepare nursing students and graduates for the NCLEX examination. In 1991, I established Professional Nursing Seminars, Inc., and in 2000, I established Nursing Reviews, Inc. Both companies are dedicated to conducting review courses for the NCLEX-RN and the NCLEX-PN examinations and assisting nursing graduates to achieve their goals of becoming Registered Nurses and/or Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses.

Today, I conduct review courses for the NCLEX examinations throughout New England and am the author of numerous successful review products published by Elsevier. I hope that you will use these review products and join me with your journey to success in testing for nursing examinations and for the NCLEX® examination!
