PhD Position in Self-Supervised Deep Learning and Computer Vision
Job Information
Offer description.
Deep learning is entering a new era. More fundamental questions are being raised comparing human-level performance with that of AI-powered machines. Current deep learning systems are data-hungry and require substantial supervision rendering them inefficient in many practical circumstances. They also illustrate significant performance degradation under data domain changes. In contrast, humans learn fast from only a handful of samples under weak or no supervision at all. Self-supervised learning sits at the core of a new learning paradigm that can potentially enable machines to learn meaningful abstractions of the world, allowing them to act more swiftly and responsibly.
In this PhD project, you will be conducting research and developing self-supervised learning algorithms applied to domain adaptation and zero/few-shot learning in the context of deep learning and computer vision. We are interested in both theoretical and applied research especially in the realm of remote sensing and satellite imagery data where redundancy and abundance of data gives rise to learning meaningful self-supervised representations. What makes this PhD project even more exciting is its connection with real-life industrial applications as well as a designated industrial internship opportunity given the dual affiliation of Dr. H. Jamali-Rad.
The project will be carried out in the research group of Dr. H. Jamali-Rad within the Computer Vision Lab (CV Lab) led by Dr. J. van Gemert, in collaboration with researchers at the faculty of EEMCS, the intelligent systems (INSY) department and the Pattern Recognition Lab (PRB Lab) at TU Delft. You will be offered flexibility in exploring and substantiating your research direction, hence candidates eager to learn and grow as scientific researchers are preferred. You will also be collaborating closely with other senior PhD researchers in the group and will supervise master and bachelor theses.
Requirements
We are looking for candidates with the following criteria:
- A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or other fields closely related to the research topic;
- A strong mathematical background in statistical learning and optimization theory.
- A solid understanding in one of the following areas: deep learning and computer vision.
- A background in graph neural networks is a plus, but not mandatory;
- Experience in programming in Python and hands-on experience in building deep learning pipelines in Pytorch (or Tensorflow);
- A good command of English (written and oral);
- Ability to work independently and in a team and a deadline-oriented attitude.
Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. For more details please check the Graduate Schools Admission Requirements .
Additional Information
Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2541 per month in the first year to € 3247 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. The TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme is aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills.
The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. PhD student position in Computer Vision
The Department of Ancient Civilizations of the University of Basel invites applications for one PhD student position (100%) in Computer Vision for 3 years on the topic of offline to online conversion of historical handwritings within the SNSF-funded research project 'Egrapsa: Retracing the evolutions of handwritings in Greco-Roman Egypt thanks to digital palaeography'. Deadline for application: April 23, 2024. Beginning of the position: September 01, 2024 (ideally). Work place: Basel (Switzerland) Salary: approx. 50'000 Swiss francs per year The interviews are expected to take place beginning of May online via Zoom. The project Papyri preserved by the dry climate of Egypt are an unparalleled source of information about the Ancient World. However, their large number, diversity and current dispersion have impeded a comprehensive grasp of their nature and content. In particular, palaeography, the study of handwritings that has the potential to unveil where, when, and by whom a text was written, still relies on experts' assertions that rarely reach consensus. New technological advances in Computer Science, notably in Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing now allow building the big picture of the writing culture of Greco-Roman Egypt and developing scientific analyses of scripts. Funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation for five years, the Starting Grant project EGRAPSA (literally “I have written” in Ancient Greek) aims at providing a new theoretical framework to the palaeography of Greek papyri. Starting from sound evidence, it aims at retracing the evolutions of handwritings, generating a model that, in turn, can contribute to organizing the papyrological documentation in a coherent panorama, improving the solidity of dates and writer identifications made on palaeographical grounds. The ground-breaking dimension of the project is to encompass the entire papyrological documentation in its full complexity to measure similarities and explain evolutions by focusing on the reconstruction of the dynamics of writing , thus to literally re-trace handwritings. For further information, see the project website https://d-scribes.philhist.unibas.ch/en/ .
Your position The PhD student will be fully funded for a period of three years, be registered as a PhD student at the University of Basel, and work under the co-supervision of Prof. Isabelle Marthot-Santaniello (Department of Ancient Civilizations) and of Prof. Ivan Dokmanić ( Department of Mathematics and Computer Science ) with support from the Center for Data Analytics ( CeDA ). The PhD dissertation project will focus on how to experimentally capture hypothetical ductus (stroke order and direction of writing) reconstructed by experts and to design deep learning pipelines as well as experimental protocols to acquire and compare ductus reconstitutions. In addition, the PhD student will take part in the team's discussions on the history and evolutions of Greek handwritings across a millennium. She/he will help organize – jointly with the team – a number of workshops and conferences, participate in outreach activities of the project and present her/his research at scientific meetings.
Your profile Applicants should hold a Master's degree in Computer Vision or related fields with grades above average (Master's thesis must be completed by the start of the position), be highly motivated to conduct innovative transdisciplinary research at the intersections of Artificial Intelligence, Kinematics, Digital Humanities and Ancient History, have an excellent command of at least English, and be able to work autonomously within an internationally and institutionally diverse environment.
We offer you The project is based in the Department of Ancient Civilizations and conducted in collaboration with the Center for Data Analytics led by Prof. Ivan Dokmanić at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science . The collaborative nature of the project ensures that the successful candidate will be immersed in a stimulating machine learning research environment, with cutting-edge infrastructure for high-performance computing provisioned by sciCORE – the Center for Scientific Computing . The salary and employment conditions will be those of PhD students at the University of Basel.
Application / Contact We look forward to receiving your complete application. Applicants should submit a motivation letter, a current CV (including a list of publications if applicable), a text sample of a research paper (MA-thesis or other), and a copy of their academic degrees via the online application portal of the University (see button below) until 23 April 2024. Please also indicate the name and address of two possible referees. Applications that are not submitted via the University's online application portal will not be considered. Questions about the position can be addressed to Prof. Isabelle Marthot-Santaniello, SNSF Project leader Egrapsa, University of Basel, Petersgraben 51, CH - 4051 Basel ( [email protected] ). www.unibas.ch

Position Description
Autonomous Vehicles at the Intersection of Computer Vision, Machine Learning and Human Factors
About the project
Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) is the leading transportation research centre in the UK and one of the Top 10 global leaders in the field. The centre currently has 60+ research staff and PhD students in multi-disciplinary areas of Human Factors, Computer Vision, AI and Machine Learning, Behavior Modeling, Psychology, and Transportation Safety.
Highly automated vehicles (AVs) also known as Level 4 vehicles can operate in self-driving mode in most circumstances and the driver is allowed to involve in any sort of non-driving activities, even sleeping. However, the automated driving mode is only expected to perform in limited spatial areas (geofenced) and under specific legislations; therefore, a human driver still has the option of getting ready to resume the driving control, whenever required.
This project aims at promoting public trust in automated driving based on scientific investigations and findings on the role of Computer Vision Technology and Human Factors in a smooth technology adaptation and transition. Using machine learning, computer vision, and human factors, the research should investigate whether the driver is ready to safely and swiftly take over the control of the vehicle? What are the major contributing human factors in taking over scenarios and to what extent? Under what circumstances the sensors and autonomous mode can perform safer than a human driver and vice-versa?
The research may involve in-cabin situation awareness such as driver behaviour monitoring (eye, head pose, and body pose modelling), as well as road hazard perception and traffic condition understanding (vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists’ detection & tracking).
While in this research we put more weight in Computer Vision part of the research, the PhD candidate is encouraged to perform joint research within our great interdisciplinary team of psychologists and human factor experts in ITS.
The PhD student is expected to contribute towards one of the following research pathways with a clear and feasible research plan and proposal for a 3.5-year PhD journey.
Possible Research Plans/Directions: • Development of appropriate methodologies, models, tools, and frameworks to increase automation levels of driving and driver comfort using real-world visual datasets and human factors.
• Using Leeds University Driving Simulator facilities/datasets for eye tracking, driver awareness monitoring, situation awareness monitoring and driver-pedestrian interactions.
• Decision making and risk assessment for switching between human and the automated driving mode, based on real-world visual datasets and sensory information in different driving scenarios.
• Driver behaviour monitoring using visual and psychological measures based on eye and head pose tracking, body pose estimation, and activity recognition.
• In-depth understanding of sensor technologies including Vision, RGB-D, Lidar, Radar, and multi-sensor data fusion research for traffic monitoring and hazard perception.
Entry requirements: – A Masters Degree in a relevant subject e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, AI, Machine Learning. – Solid background in applied Computer Vision and Machine Learning – Demonstrated competency in Math and Statistics – Demonstrated Programming proficiency (Python and/or C) – Minimum IELTS Score of 6.5 (no band less than 6.0)
Desired competencies: – Ability to teamwork in a multidisciplinary research group – Willingness and plans for joint research in human factors, safety, public trust, and social impact of the research. – Prior publications in the field
Country Eligibility: UK/EU/International
