ASSISTANT RESIDENCE HALL DIRECTOR (GRADUATE ASSISTANT) TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT Position Title: Assistant Residence Hall Director (ARHD) – Graduate Assistant Department: Auxiliary Services & University Housing

Reports To:

Residence Hall Director (RHD)

Position Objective: The Assistant Residence Hall Director (Graduate Assistant) position is a live-in, part-time para-professional position that includes some weekend and evening hours. The ARHD assists the Residence Hall Director (RHD) with enhancing student learning and academic success through the creation of a community environment that supports the overall development of students. Qualifications: The Assistant Residence Hall Director must have completed an undergraduate degree and have relevant experience in student leadership. The ARHD must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student as defined by Governors State University and have a successful criminal background check.

Dimensions of Position : Assist the Residence Hall Director in training, supervising, and evaluating the paraprofessional staff. Assist and advise students in matters related to academic support, crisis intervention, referral, programming, discipline, conflicts, personal development, and leadership opportunities. Provide leadership for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the reception desk and night security staff in the residential building. Scope of Authority: In consultation and collaboration with the Residence Hall Director, the ARHD has the authority to act independently and in compliance with department and University policy and state law in the resolution of problems, concerns, and goal accomplishments.

Terms of Employment:

1. The ARHD must remain enrolled for at least six credit hours each semester in a degree-granting program at Governors State University during the time of his/her employment. The ARHD course credit load may not exceed twelve (12) credit hours per semester without prior approval from the Director, Auxiliary Services & University Housing.

2. The ARHD must maintain a cumulative and semester grade point average of 3.00 or above. ARHDs who fail to maintain a 3.00 grade point average may be subject to probation and/or termination.

3. The Department of Auxiliary Services & University Housing expectation is that the ARHD position is one’s primary employment focus. To that end, the ARHD will be involved in no other employment while under continuing appointment with the Department of Auxiliary Services & University Housing, unless written permission has been granted. Requests for outside employment must be made in writing to their respective RHD and the Director of Auxiliary Services & University Housing. The department reserves the right to limit or deny any outside employment requests. ARHDs must be in good academic and job standing in order to pursue this request.

4. The ARHD must be available for, and attend, August and January training periods, opening and closing of the residence halls, and available for duty periods, if needed.

5. The ARHD must be available twenty (20) hours per week and maintain a work schedule designed to maximize accessibility to students and staff.

6. The ARHD will participate in on-call duty coverage.

7. ARHDs are allowed at least five (5) weekends away per semester. ARHDs will need to work with their RHD and the Assistant Director of University Housing to arrange this time away so as not to disrupt day-to-day activities within the residence hall and the area’s duty rotation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The principal ARHD duties are as follows. It is not possible to list all-inclusive duties:

1. Assist the Residence Hall Director in the supervision, training, selection, and evaluation of Resident Assistants within their assigned hall.

2. Assist in the development and implementation of community and educational initiatives in the hall to help address the needs of students in a living-learning environment.

3. Oversee the day-to-day operations of the reception desk and night security staff in the residence hall. This includes, but is not limited to: mail and package delivery; key/access control; work requests, etc.

4. Coordinate and support the recruitment, selection, hiring recommendations, and training of residence hall desk student staff.

5. Assist in the opening and closing of the residence halls in accordance with outlined procedures and instructions.

6. Support, implement, enforce, and interpret University policies and procedures.

7. Assist, as needed, with recruitment and retention presentations and programs for current and prospective students and parents.

8. Be available twenty (20) hours per week and maintain a work schedule designed to maximize accessibility to students and staff. The ARHD will work in collaboration with his/her supervisor to determine the exact number of office hours and other hours of availability.

9. Coordinate and supervise timely completion of all appropriate paperwork and reports including, but not limited to, student conduct reports, major incident reports, community activities paperwork, room condition reports, weekly reports, no-show information, and room/hall changes.

10. Attend all required residential community meetings, as outlined by the residence hall Director.

11. Participate and attend all RA training programs, RHD/ARHD training programs, RA selection processes, and other programs sponsored by the department. Dates to be determined.

12. Participate in on-call duty coverage.

13. Meet with residents throughout the year regarding social, educational, and academic concerns; initiate appropriate referrals and communicate University policies, procedures, and resources.

14. Advise students with personal concerns, or refer them to other appropriate campus resources and/or community agencies.

15. Assume additional responsibilities and perform special tasks as assigned.

ARHD Compensation:

  • The ARHD appointment for the fall semester will begin August 16, 2024 and continue through December 15, 2024.
  • The ARHD appointment for spring semester begins January 16, 2025 and ends on May 15, 2025. ARHDs that are not reappointed to their position (i.e., resignation, non-renewal, graduation) are required to move out of the apartment no later than May 15, 2025.
  • The monthly academic year (Fall/Spring) stipend for Graduate Assistantship in University Housing (ARHDs) for 2024-2025 is $824/month for 20 hours of work/week. The ARHD will receive additional compensation in the form of a stipend for any time worked over the winter or spring break period or summer session ($200/week).
  • As part of the employment package with the Department of Auxiliary Services & University Housing, ARHDs are also provided:
  • A private bedroom in a 2-person apartment. The ARHD can identify a GSU student to be their apartment mate, or one will be assigned as an apartment mate.
  • Full graduate student tuition waivers for their semesters of appointment (i.e., fall/spring; summer if employed).
  • Parking permit for a reserved lot adjacent to Prairie Place.
  • $75/week (fall/spring) to be placed directly on the student’s myONECard account (maximum of $1200/semester).

In order to be eligible for reappointment, the graduate assistant/ARHD must maintain a 3.0 grade point average, must continue to make satisfactory progress toward the graduate degree, and satisfactorily perform assigned duties. The graduate assistant/ARHD will be evaluated at the end of each term by his/her assigned supervisor.

Preferred Qualifications

We prefer ARHD candidates to have good interpersonal and organizational skills and overall potential for leadership contribution to the GSU community. Candidates must have a willingness and ability to serve as a University representative and enforce policies.

Candidates will possess a willingness to work with diverse people and perspectives as well as demonstrate good oral and written communication skills. Successful candidates should have experience working on or with a team of people. Staff must be able to work nights, weekends and on occasion holidays.
