Top Tips for writing your Student Ambassador Cover Letter

Here are our top tips to help you write your cover letter for the role of Student Ambassador.

Plan: Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to plan, draft, proof and finalise your cover letter.

What are we looking for in your cover letter? We are trying to understand how you meet our essential and desirable criteria, therefore when answering the questions make sure you are writing how you meet each criteria. This is our first interaction with you, so make sure your cover letter stands out. We are looking for quality over quantity,  examples are the key. The cover letter should be no more than one side of A4

Use Examples: When you are showing us how you meet the criteria, back up your statements with examples, this can be previous work experience, clubs and societies, group assessment, and previous education experiences etc.

Use the STAR technique to help structure your answer – this is also a really good structure to use if you are successful to interview when providing us answers.

  • Situation: Briefly describe the context of the situation
  • Task: Explain the task that had to be completed
  • Action: What actions did you take to ensure the task was complete
  • Result: If possible what the outcome was and why your actions benefited the situation.

Using AI: We have seen an increase in use of AI in applications, AI can help provide an initial structure and ideas for applications, but it means that the cover letters look very similar and aren’t showcasing what you can bring to the role and make you stand out from all our other applications (300+).  The information you provide in the cover letter must be true and authentic. Authenticity is a really important part of being a Student Ambassador and how we want you to share your student experience.

What's The Best Structure For Ambassador Cover Letters?

After creating an impressive Ambassador resume , the next step is crafting a compelling cover letter to accompany your job applications. It's essential to remember that your cover letter should maintain a formal tone and follow a recommended structure. But what exactly does this structure entail, and what key elements should be included in a Ambassador cover letter? Let's explore the guidelines and components that will make your cover letter stand out.

Key Components For Ambassador Cover Letters:

  • Your contact information, including the date of writing
  • The recipient's details, such as the company's name and the name of the addressee
  • A professional greeting or salutation, like "Dear Mr. Levi,"
  • An attention-grabbing opening statement to captivate the reader's interest
  • A concise paragraph explaining why you are an excellent fit for the role
  • Another paragraph highlighting why the position aligns with your career goals and aspirations
  • A closing statement that reinforces your enthusiasm and suitability for the role
  • A complimentary closing, such as "Regards" or "Sincerely," followed by your name
  • An optional postscript (P.S.) to add a brief, impactful note or mention any additional relevant information.

Cover Letter Header

A header in a cover letter should typically include the following information:

  • Your Full Name: Begin with your first and last name, written in a clear and legible format.
  • Contact Information: Include your phone number, email address, and optionally, your mailing address. Providing multiple methods of contact ensures that the hiring manager can reach you easily.
  • Date: Add the date on which you are writing the cover letter. This helps establish the timeline of your application.

It's important to place the header at the top of the cover letter, aligning it to the left or center of the page. This ensures that the reader can quickly identify your contact details and know when the cover letter was written.

Cover Letter Greeting / Salutation

A greeting in a cover letter should contain the following elements:

  • Personalized Salutation: Address the hiring manager or the specific recipient of the cover letter by their name. If the name is not mentioned in the job posting or you are unsure about the recipient's name, it's acceptable to use a general salutation such as "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear [Company Name] Recruiting Team."
  • Professional Tone: Maintain a formal and respectful tone throughout the greeting. Avoid using overly casual language or informal expressions.
  • Correct Spelling and Title: Double-check the spelling of the recipient's name and ensure that you use the appropriate title (e.g., Mr., Ms., Dr., or Professor) if applicable. This shows attention to detail and professionalism.

For example, a suitable greeting could be "Dear Ms. Johnson," or "Dear Hiring Manager," depending on the information available. It's important to tailor the greeting to the specific recipient to create a personalized and professional tone for your cover letter.

Cover Letter Introduction

An introduction for a cover letter should capture the reader's attention and provide a brief overview of your background and interest in the position. Here's how an effective introduction should look:

  • Opening Statement: Start with a strong opening sentence that immediately grabs the reader's attention. Consider mentioning your enthusiasm for the job opportunity or any specific aspect of the company or organization that sparked your interest.
  • Brief Introduction: Provide a concise introduction of yourself and mention the specific position you are applying for. Include any relevant background information, such as your current role, educational background, or notable achievements that are directly related to the position.
  • Connection to the Company: Demonstrate your knowledge of the company or organization and establish a connection between your skills and experiences with their mission, values, or industry. Showcasing your understanding and alignment with their goals helps to emphasize your fit for the role.
  • Engaging Hook: Consider including a compelling sentence or two that highlights your unique selling points or key qualifications that make you stand out from other candidates. This can be a specific accomplishment, a relevant skill, or an experience that demonstrates your value as a potential employee.
  • Transition to the Body: Conclude the introduction by smoothly transitioning to the main body of the cover letter, where you will provide more detailed information about your qualifications, experiences, and how they align with the requirements of the position.

Navigating the resume landscape without experience

It's not uncommon for candidates lacking direct experience to secure entry-level positions. Their resumes often share these characteristics:

  • They opt for a functional or skill-based format, emphasizing strengths over chronological work history.
  • Transferrable skills, gleaned from diverse life and work experiences, take center stage.
  • The objective section melds career highlights, the motivation behind the application, and the unique value proposition for the role.
  • Skills are tailored to meet basic job prerequisites while also spotlighting any specialized expertise.
  • Resume Without Work Experience
  • Resume Job Description

Highlight what sets your experience apart. Incorporate metrics, feedback, and the tangible value you've added to organizations. This specificity ensures your resume remains pertinent and memorable.

Recruiters hiring for student ambassador roles are always keen on hiring candidates with relevant technical and people talents.

Hard skills or technical ones are quite beneficial for the industry - as they refer to your competency with particular software and technologies.

Meanwhile, your soft (or people) skills are quite crucial to yours and the company's professional growth as they detail how you'd cooperate and interact in your potential environment.

Here's how to describe your hard and soft skill set in your student ambassador resume:

  • Consider what the key job requirements are and list those towards the top of your skills section.
  • Think of individual, specific skills that help you stand out amongst competitors, and detail how they've helped you succeed in the past.
  • Look to the future of the industry and list all software/ technologies which are forward-facing.
  • Create a separate, technical skills section to supplement your experience and further align with the student ambassador job advert.

Find the perfect balance between your resume hard and soft skills with our two lists.

If the job emphasizes team or organizational culture, dedicate a section of your resume to underscore your strengths and achievements. Top-tier student ambassador candidates also highlight their alignment with a company's values and culture.

Your education section is a testament to your foundational knowledge and expertise.

  • Detailing your academic qualifications, including the institution and duration.
  • If you're still studying, mention your anticipated graduation date.
  • Omit degrees that aren't pertinent to the job.
  • Highlight academic experiences that underscore significant milestones.

For student ambassador roles, relevant education and certifications can set you apart.

To effectively showcase your qualifications:

Best certifications to list on your resume

I'm sorry for the confusion but as of my knowledge cutoff in 2021, there aren't typically any specific certifications required for a Student Ambassador job. This role often requires personal skills like communication, leadership, and enthusiasm rather than technical qualifications. However, having leadership training or relevant experience can certainly be beneficial.

Listing your relevant degrees or certificates on your student ambassador resume is a win-win situation. Not only does it hint at your technical capabilities in the industry, but also at a range of soft skills, including perseverance, adaptability, and motivation.

  • Expected Graduation Date Resume
  • Activities Resume for College

Many student ambassador candidates ponder whether to include a resume summary or objective.

Here's a breakdown:

  • A Resume objective outlines your career aspirations. It tells recruiters why you're applying and the value you can bring.
  • A Resume summary offers a snapshot of your significant achievements, giving a quick overview of your expertise.

New professionals might lean towards an objective, while seasoned experts might prefer a summary. Whichever you choose, ensure it's tailored to the role.

For inspiration, review examples from established student ambassador professionals.

Make sure to highlight these in your cover letter. 3. Show Enthusiasm for the Brand: A big part of being a Brand Ambassador is being passionate about the brand you're representing. Show your enthusiasm for the brand in your cover letter. This could be through demonstrating knowledge about the brand, its products or services, or its values. 4. Provide Examples: Use examples from your past experiences to demonstrate your skills. For instance, if you've worked in retail, you might have experience in promoting products to customers. If you've been involved in clubs or societies at school or university, you might have experience in representing a group and influencing others. 5. Show Willingness to Learn: If you're new to the role, employers will want to see that you're willing to learn. Make sure to express this in your cover letter. 6. Keep it Professional: Even though the role of a Brand Ambassador can be fun and social, remember to keep your cover letter professional. This means using a professional tone, checking for spelling and grammar mistakes, and keeping it concise. 7. Tailor Your Cover Letter: Finally, make sure to tailor your cover letter to each job you apply for. This means addressing the specific requirements listed in the job description and showing how you can meet these. Remember, everyone has to start somewhere. Even if you don't have experience as a Brand Ambassador, you can still write a strong cover letter that highlights your relevant skills and enthusiasm for the role.
