1. The Spirit of Education

Spirit of Education by Norman Rockwell

For almost fifty years, the visionary artwork of Norman Rockwell captivated the imaginations of Americans and resonated with their experiences. His iconic pictures that regularly graced the cover of the Saturday Evening Post brought to life the unique spirit of American art and culture. As an illustrator, Rockwell used a combination of vivid colors, intricate details, and lifelike figures to create a unique art experience that would eventually become known as "Norman Rockwell Americana." To kick off today’s theme, we are proud to present Rockwell’s masterpiece, “The Spirit of Education” from 1934. This portrait-style painting captures the beauty of education in a unique and vibrant manner and is certainly a must-see for any art enthusiast.

2. The Music Lesson

The Music Lesson by Johannes Vermeer

The Music Lesson by Johannes Vermeer is an incredibly beautiful and emotive painting that immerses viewers in a wholly unique art experience. This painting, created between 1662 - 1665, has been the subject of much debate among experts in regard to its intended purpose - to show a music lesson in play or a more intimate moment. The painting is set in Vermeer's studio, and he has carefully chosen objects to decorate the room. Some of the objects he owns, such as the ebony mirror which reflects the young woman’s face and the foot of his easel, while others he does not, such as the virginal and the marble floor. Regardless of the painting's intended purpose, it is undeniable that Johannes Vermeer created a stunning piece of art that offers both viewers of the past and our, times a unique art experience that continues to inspire today!

3. America’s Great Migration by Jacob Lawrence

education theme drawing

In 1941, renowned African-American artist Jacob Lawrence created a 60-panel series titled “The Migration Series” as part of his art experience which chronicled America’s Great Migration. This prolific series of works revealed the challenges, triumphs, and changes faced by many African Americans as they ventured forth from the American South in the hopes of finding a better life in the industrial North. “Panel No. 58” addressed how, after resettlement, children had greater access to public education and knowledge. Lawrence’s powerful visuals, coupled with his vibrant colors, conveyed the idea that the Great Migration was as much of an opportunity to develop a better life as it was a tragedy of leaving one home for another. “The Migration Series” is considered to be one of Lawrence's major accomplishments and provides us with a lasting insight into African-American life during this unprecedented period of upheaval and change.

4. London Visitors

London Visitors by James Tissot

James Tissot’s 1874 painting “London Visitors” offers viewers an interesting glimpse into the culture of the National Gallery of Art in London. In the painting, we see several school-age guides dressed in the uniform of nearby Christ’s Hospital School. By providing these students the opportunity to act as guides, the National Gallery of Art is offering tourists an immersive art experience . By dressing the students in the school uniform, it implies that the hospital is dedicated to providing education to those who may not have access to it, a philosophy shared by the National Gallery of Art. Through art, both institutions have been able to enrich the lives of their visitors and provide invaluable learning experiences.

5. The Dance Class

The Dance Class Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas is a renowned artist who has left a widespread impact on the world of fine art through his ballet paintings. His piece “The Dance Class” encompasses a pausing moment in such an energetic atmosphere. The painting, completed in the span of 1873 to 1876, captures a moment of a dance lesson led by the famed Paris dancer and choreographer, Jules Perrot. Interestingly, Degas and Perrot had become friendly acquaintances which is believed to have added a unique perspective to this painting.

The warm hues of the painting, mixed with its nostalgic feel, create a beautiful art experience. It allows for viewers to imagine themselves in the class, with Perrot leading the choreography as if time has suddenly stopped. In a way, “The Dance Class” illuminates the impact of cultural change over time, with Perrot, who had been absent from the Paris Opéra for almost 3 decades, being a part of the painting itself. Through “The Dance Class”, Degas was able to remind viewers watching it of the ever-changing dynamic of the world, as well as how history shapes the present.

6. The Red School House

The Red School House by Winslow Homer

The Red School House by Winslow Homer is a truly captivating work of art that provides us with an experience of the life of a schoolteacher at the turn of the 19th century. This 1873 painting shows us a young teacher making her way home, in the fading light of an exquisite evening sky. Homer has employed a masterful technique, using his unique perspective to capture the beauty of the natural landscape and provide us with an intimate glimpse into the everyday life of a schoolteacher. The Red School House is a remarkable testament to Homer's artistic genius, representing a truly singular and intimate art experience for viewers.

7. A School for Boys and Girls

A School for Boys and Girls Jan Steel

This impressive painting by Jan Steen , "The School for Boys and Girls" (1670), is an example of how art can provide a unique and powerful experience for the viewer. Not only does the piece capture the chaotic energy of a classroom at the time of its creation, but Steen has deliberately imbued the painting with meaning through the placement of certain items throughout the scene. One such example is the boy with two glasses in his hands attempting to give them to the owl, which is symbolic of the popular Dutch saying, "What use are glasses or light if the owl does not want to see". This proverb likely serves as a commentary on the idea that knowledge cannot always be obtained through physical means, and many of the other items in the painting have similar implications. It is through this clever utilization of symbolism that Steen is able to communicate a message about the educational environment of the era in such a vivid and engaging way. Even more impressive is that these hidden artistic details still hold relevance to modern viewers, making it a truly timeless and thought-provoking work of art.

8. The Problem We All Live With.

The Problem we All Live With Norman Rockwell Look Magazine

The art experience of 1963 and 1964, when Norman Rockwell left the Saturday Evening Post and began to paint for LOOK Magazine, was considerable, with his covers focusing on societal issues and current events. His 1964 piece, “The Problem We All Live With,” depicted Ruby Bridges's famous walk to her first day of school in 1960 and is seen by many as an iconic representation of the Civil Rights Movement. In that painting, Bridges is seen walking against the backdrop of a wall with a broken bottle of tomato juice symbolizing the destructive nature of the racism she was facing. Although Rockwell created the artwork, the painting also showed the unity of six white figures, representing the many Americans who supported Ruby and her cause. “The Problem We All Live With” became so significant, that it was even moved to the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, where it can still be found today.

9. “The School of Athens

The School of Athens, Raphael

The School of Athens fresco is an impressive work of art and an unforgettable experience for visitors to the Vatican Museums. Painted by Renaissance master Raphael between 1509 and 1511, it is a true masterpiece in the Raphael Rooms . In the painting, Raphael sought to capture the spirit of the great Ancient Greek thinkers including Aristotle, Plato, mathematicians, and many more. What's more, the artist depicted himself in the piece – he can be seen in the far-right corner as one of the figures in the painting. Not only is the painting beautiful to look at, but it also offers a rare glimpse into the thoughts and opinions of the world-famous philosophers and provides a cultural insight into the Ancient Greek world. Visiting The School of Athens is an experience unlike any other. It is an incomparable art experience that will stay with visitors long after the painting itself.

10. Henri Matisse - The Music Lesson

Henri Matisse - The Music Lesson

Visiting the museum to explore Henry Matisse’s works can be an eye-opening and enriching experience. Not only do these paintings display a variety of techniques and artistic styles, but they also allow viewers to gain greater insight into the past. With every passing moment that is spent looking at Matisse’s works, one is able to gain an understanding of the context in which it was created, the story behind it, and the message it conveys. In order to gain more out of one’s art experience, one should not hesitate to take the time to learn about a particular painting and discover what histories and stories it holds. Oftentimes, when learning about art, the experience can be even more powerful and meaningful. Explore Themes in Art

Explore the common themes that link artworks across time periods in American history. What might a portrait from the 18th century have in common with a 20th century multi-media sculpture? Examining artworks thematically allows for the examination and development of these subjects that transcend historical eras. Themes enable students to understand that certain topics are not wholly obscure and can be as relevant today as they were two hundred years ago. These themes are especially useful for Language Arts educators, who are looking to use an artwork to address a literary theme. Click on a theme to discover the related artworks that address the theme.

The Year 2023, has been a memorable one in the life of the College of Education and External Studies. The college has made a number of salient achievements, notwithstanding the challenges which when solved made us stand high as a prime graduate teacher training facility in the region and Uganda in particular.

This year’ s annual report 2023 presents the key activities, achievements, networks and challenges registered the college as it embarked back on the journey towards the second epoch of Makerere ’s centenary celebrations in 2022 and existence.

With its tripartite mission of: Teaching, Research and Community outreach, the following have been registered:

The year begun with council approving the Makerere University Institute for Teacher Education and Research (MITER). MITER was incepted with a goal of contributing to the University Research Agenda cognizant of the current strategic direction of Makerere University which is skewed towards research led university. MITER was also meant to contribute to the National Teacher Policy (NTP, 2019) – which aims at professionalizing teacher education in Uganda through research.

To achieve its prime goal of professionalizing teacher education in Uganda, CEES, through MITER and in collaboration with the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) has initiated a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to incept the desired critical pedagogy which is not only of importance to secondary education, but is key to revitalizing university and tertiary education in Uganda. The college is ever grateful to the Vice Chancellor Prof. Nawangwe Barnabas, the Deputy Vice Chancellor- Academic Affairs Prof Kakumba Umar and the Director NCDC Dr Baguma K. Grace. who have linked up Makerere University with The National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) which is a body responsible for the development of educational curricula for Pre-primary, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions in Uganda. Cognizant of the fact that CEES –School of Education mainly serves the constituents of Pre-primary, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions in Uganda.

To realize and fulfill its networking mandate, the college has signed a number of MoUs for example: IODeL signed an MOU with MS Seed Global Health to provide e-Learning and e-Content Development Training for Lira University academic staff members. Forty (40) staff trained and developed e-content for their respective courses. The college also signed an MoU with Uganda police to train Uganda Police officers and men in soft skills. The college through CLL has continued to train and reach out to the most disadvantaged mostly girls through its collaboration with Love Binti International https://us.lovebinti.org “ Love Binti pushing Women empower Project and eyes” on helping their basic needs for sanitary pads and clothing by teaching them tailoring and other sift skills not requiring credited academic programmes.

This year, a number of memorial lectures, conferences, workshops and educational webinars have been arranged in the course of the year for example: Nsumba Lyazi Memorial Lecture of “the unforgettable education Legacy, the Prof. Senteza Kajubi memorial lecture where Senteza was eulogized for enormous contribution towards the education sector. The college also on July 24, 2023, hosted the Distance Education and Teacher Training in Africa (DETA) Conference. In the conference: Researchers discuss transformation of e-learning with a call to embrace distance and e-learnings and address the challenges associated with emerging Information and Communication Technologies. The Centre for Teaching and Learning Support, CEES in collaboration with the University College London, UK organized an Educational webinar entitled: Omissions in Sloane’s Jamaican collections: African slave trade and modern slavery building shared futures. The college also organized a dissemination workshop on ‘Increasing Access to Inclusive and Quality Business, Technical, Vocational Education and Training through Open, Distance and e-Learning.

The project was funded by the Government of Uganda under the Makerere University Research and Innovations Fund (Mak-RIF). The college is ever grateful to the government of Uganda and the Ministry of Education and Sports. Staff in the College of Education and External Studies have embarked on a number of micro and macro educational research projects either sponsored by Makerere ’s development partners or the government of Uganda through Mak-RIF. The college received a number of foreign students and vising scholars for example: CEES hosts 21 students from University of Agder, Norway. It also hosted professors from the university of Hiroshima, Japan. At the same time a number of faculty went for post-doctoral studies in USA, Finland and Norway. The Malmo- Makerere University staff and student mobility program has been renewed. It is hoped CEES –ECD/ECCE staff and students will benefit from the mobility to Malmo –Sweden. The college will this year present close to 939 students for graduation, 370 of them male while 569 are female. This number excludes the graduate students who are still defending their study projects. The college is very proud of its undergraduate students who incepted a project called “Teachers on the drive to keep Makerere University clean and off liters “.

As we enter the new year, 2024, the college of education is embarking of transforming its face and to refine its facilities to meet the national and international standards for Increased Access to Inclusive education, given its ever increasing numbers of special needs students. This year in the academic year 2023/24 the college received a pumper harvest of close to 1200 undergraduate BA. ED and BSc. ED student intake. It also saw an approximately 60% increase in the number of its graduate student and PGDE numbers.

The college also hopes to enhance its national and international visibility in e-pedagogical practice and research through IoDEL. The college given its strategic direction drawn from the Makerere University -research –led mantle, which pivots on enhanced staff and student’s capacity in educational research. CEES hopes to expand and grow the EASHESD by setting up a modern graduate training Centre with facilities such as smart and educational PhD conference study rooms at CEES-book bank.

The college hopes to increase its visibility in Uganda’s primary and secondary school education space since the DSTVE staff who are key in Ugandan STEM terrain have been oriented on the New Lower Secondary School Curriculum by NCDC staff courtesy of the CARNEGIE (CECAP) departmental grant. The college in the year 2024 also hopes to realize its dream of having the Early Child Study and Child support Centre built.

I do thank the entire College team for work well done in the year 2023. Specifically I thank Associate Professor Ronald Bisaso, the Deputy Principal for steering the academic mantle of the College, the Deans, Assoc. Prof. Mathias Mulumba, Dr. David Onen the out-going Dean East African School of Higher Education Studies and Development (EASHESD), Dr. Twine Bananuka , the outgoing Dean School of Distance and Lifelong Learning (SoDLL), Dr. Harriet Nabushawo , the incoming Dean SoDLL, Prof. Julius Kikooma who pacified the EASHESD, the various Heads of Departments (Dr. Nicholas Itaaga, Dr. Muhammad M. I would also wish to thank the staff who have carried out the teaching mission of CEES.

The College Leadership, staff and students do thank the University Council for providing the pedagogical and non-pedagogical facilitation requisite for their work. Specifically, they thank the Chair Council Mrs. Lorna Magara and her team who took time to visit and talk to the staff of CEES in this particular year ending. Such visits are not taken for granted, they boost staff and cause meaningful accountability on part of staff and the College Leadership.

We, in a very special way thank the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe and his team for always providing an understanding ear to our challenges and providing prompt solutions as well as providing the necessary mentorship to us all. Thank you very much.

I do thank the government of Uganda and the various national and international agencies which have funded our teaching, research and enabled us to network as our mandate dictates. We do thank you all and always will count on your support.

As We Build for the Future.

Government Asked to Make Fine Art Compulsory in Secondary Schools

Group photo of workshop participants. Launch of findings of the pilot report for the Visual Arts Curriculum Review by the College of Education and External Studies (CEES) on 17th April 2024, E-Learning Centre, Frank Kalimuzo Central Teaching Facility, Makerere University, Kampala Uganda, East Africa.

Government through the Ministry of Education and Sports has been called upon to find ways of popularizing the subject of art and crafts in lower and higher secondary education.

Prof. Anthony Muggaga, the Principal of the College of Education and External Studies at Makerere University , said yesterday that the government should explore measures including making the subject compulsory.

“We should have at least a module for one term like we have General Paper or computer,” he said.

Prof. Anthony Muwagga Mugagga.

Prof. Mugagga believes that without popularizing Fine Art, the education sector will continue churning out students who lack critical thinking.

“Fine Art is what will cultivate a critical mindset amongst our learners. That is why we encourage children in nursery school to draw; we are trying to bring out what is in their minds,” he said.

“It is the same reason that art is considered therapy for mental health patients. When they draw, they express what is taking place in their minds.”

Prof. Mugagga was speaking at the launch of the findings of the pilot report for the Visual Arts Curriculum Review.

Dr. Julius Ssegantebuka.

Dr Julius Ssegantebuka from Makerere University College of Education and External Studies and the lead researchers said the curriculum review project is intended to prepare secondary school art and design teachers, by equipping them with practical skills and values that match the modern world.

“During this second phase of the project, we had trial lectures and discussions with the teachers. We also embarked on removing obsolete content and replaced it with new content and also separated some of the art disciplines that were formally combined,” he said.

The updated curriculum he said, puts emphasis on research, group discussions, and field studies among others.

Dr. Grace Baguma, Director NCDC.

Speaking as chief guest at the launch, Dr Grace K Baguma, the Director National Curriculum Development Center commended the initiative.

“I commend Dr Ssegantebuka and the team for this initiative, which is aimed at contributing to the development of quality curricula that employ modern pedagogies that respond to societal needs,” she said.

On her part, Dr Moreen Muwanga from Kyambogo University called for the integration of ICT in the teaching of visual arts.

“Many of us have a phobia of handling a computer. Yet the students we are teaching are flexible and conversant with ICT,” she said.

Develop Theme-Based Lessons for a More Authentic Experience

When writing lesson plans, most teachers start with the objective: What will the student be able to do? The objective might include concepts ranging from the elements and principles of design to art techniques or even art materials. Usually, it is only after the objective is in place that a theme is presented. For example, a common objective at the high school level is gaining an understanding of perspective. In order to demonstrate that the objective was learned, the students might be asked to draw within the theme of a cityscape.

Theme teaching, on the other hand, presents the same information but reverses the order, simulating the way many artists work.

Artists rarely begin by asking themselves, “I’ll work in 1 point perspective today. What should I create?” Instead, they may be inspired to create a cityscape after a trip to New York City. Then, they may select 1 point perspective as a means of accomplishing that goal.

Theme teaching begins by presenting the student with a question or topic to inspire thought. The student considers the theme and then generates a series of possible solutions. From these possibilities, the student selects a final idea for his or her project.

It is only after the final idea has been determined that the student considers what materials to use and the techniques he or she may need to learn.

Theme teaching puts a student in charge of his or her own learning.

It transforms his or her thinking from that of a student to that of an artist. Below are three different ways you could present themes in your art room, from simple to more complicated.

ThemeBased

Descriptive Themes

Descriptive Themes are basic, making them a nice starting point. Descriptive themes pose more concrete questions to students.

Examples include:

1. What’s behind the door? 2. It happened one night… 3. The bus ride home…

Abstract Themes

Abstract themes are less concrete and even more open-ended.

1. Play 2. Systems 3. Autobiographical

Postmodern Principles

Postmodern Principals are themes that require higher level thinking, making them a good choice to try once you’re feeling more comfortable with presenting projects this way.

1. Juxtaposition 2. Layering 3. Interactivity

So tell us, have you tried theme teaching before?

Can you see theme teaching working at younger grade levels?

What themes do you think would be most inspiring for students?
