P LANNING, PARAGRAPHING AND POLISHING: FINE-TUNING THE PERFECT ESSAY

Essay writing is an essential skill for every student. Whether writing a particular academic essay (such as persuasive, narrative, descriptive, or expository) or a timed exam essay, the key to getting good at writing is to write. Creating opportunities for our students to engage in extended writing activities will go a long way to helping them improve their skills as scribes.

But, putting the hours in alone will not be enough to attain the highest levels in essay writing. Practice must be meaningful. Once students have a broad overview of how to structure the various types of essays, they are ready to narrow in on the minor details that will enable them to fine-tune their work as a lean vehicle of their thoughts and ideas.

In this article, we will drill down to some aspects that will assist students in taking their essay writing skills up a notch. Many ideas and activities can be integrated into broader lesson plans based on essay writing. Often, though, they will work effectively in isolation – just as athletes isolate physical movements to drill that are relevant to their sport. When these movements become second nature, they can be repeated naturally in the context of the game or in our case, the writing of the essay.

Planning an essay

The Boys Scouts’ motto is famously ‘Be Prepared’. It’s a solid motto that can be applied to most aspects of life; essay writing is no different. Given the purpose of an essay is generally to present a logical and reasoned argument, investing time in organising arguments, ideas, and structure would seem to be time well spent.

Given that essays can take a wide range of forms and that we all have our own individual approaches to writing, it stands to reason that there will be no single best approach to the planning stage of essay writing. That said, there are several helpful hints and techniques we can share with our students to help them wrestle their ideas into a writable form. Let’s take a look at a few of the best of these:

BREAK THE QUESTION DOWN: UNDERSTAND YOUR ESSAY TOPIC.

Whether students are tackling an assignment that you have set for them in class or responding to an essay prompt in an exam situation, they should get into the habit of analyzing the nature of the task. To do this, they should unravel the question’s meaning or prompt. Students can practice this in class by responding to various essay titles, questions, and prompts, thereby gaining valuable experience breaking these down.

Have students work in groups to underline and dissect the keywords and phrases and discuss what exactly is being asked of them in the task. Are they being asked to discuss, describe, persuade, or explain? Understanding the exact nature of the task is crucial before going any further in the planning process, never mind the writing process .

BRAINSTORM AND MIND MAP WHAT YOU KNOW:

Once students have understood what the essay task asks them, they should consider what they know about the topic and, often, how they feel about it. When teaching essay writing, we so often emphasize that it is about expressing our opinions on things, but for our younger students what they think about something isn’t always obvious, even to themselves.

Brainstorming and mind-mapping what they know about a topic offers them an opportunity to uncover not just what they already know about a topic, but also gives them a chance to reveal to themselves what they think about the topic. This will help guide them in structuring their research and, later, the essay they will write . When writing an essay in an exam context, this may be the only ‘research’ the student can undertake before the writing, so practicing this will be even more important.

RESEARCH YOUR ESSAY

The previous step above should reveal to students the general direction their research will take. With the ubiquitousness of the internet, gone are the days of students relying on a single well-thumbed encyclopaedia from the school library as their sole authoritative source in their essay. If anything, the real problem for our students today is narrowing down their sources to a manageable number. Students should use the information from the previous step to help here. At this stage, it is important that they:

●      Ensure the research material is directly relevant to the essay task

●      Record in detail the sources of the information that they will use in their essay

●      Engage with the material personally by asking questions and challenging their own biases

●      Identify the key points that will be made in their essay

●      Group ideas, counterarguments, and opinions together

●      Identify the overarching argument they will make in their own essay.

Once these stages have been completed the student is ready to organise their points into a logical order.

WRITING YOUR ESSAY

There are a number of ways for students to organize their points in preparation for writing. They can use graphic organizers , post-it notes, or any number of available writing apps. The important thing for them to consider here is that their points should follow a logical progression. This progression of their argument will be expressed in the form of body paragraphs that will inform the structure of their finished essay.

The number of paragraphs contained in an essay will depend on a number of factors such as word limits, time limits, the complexity of the question etc. Regardless of the essay’s length, students should ensure their essay follows the Rule of Three in that every essay they write contains an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Generally speaking, essay paragraphs will focus on one main idea that is usually expressed in a topic sentence that is followed by a series of supporting sentences that bolster that main idea. The first and final sentences are of the most significance here with the first sentence of a paragraph making the point to the reader and the final sentence of the paragraph making the overall relevance to the essay’s argument crystal clear. 

Though students will most likely be familiar with the broad generic structure of essays, it is worth investing time to ensure they have a clear conception of how each part of the essay works, that is, of the exact nature of the task it performs. Let’s review:

Common Essay Structure

Introduction: Provides the reader with context for the essay. It states the broad argument that the essay will make and informs the reader of the writer’s general perspective and approach to the question.

Body Paragraphs: These are the ‘meat’ of the essay and lay out the argument stated in the introduction point by point with supporting evidence.

Conclusion: Usually, the conclusion will restate the central argument while summarising the essay’s main supporting reasons before linking everything back to the original question.

ESSAY WRITING PARAGRAPH WRITING TIPS

●      Each paragraph should focus on a single main idea

●      Paragraphs should follow a logical sequence; students should group similar ideas together to avoid incoherence

●      Paragraphs should be denoted consistently; students should choose either to indent or skip a line

●      Transition words and phrases such as alternatively , consequently , in contrast should be used to give flow and provide a bridge between paragraphs.

HOW TO EDIT AN ESSAY

Students shouldn’t expect their essays to emerge from the writing process perfectly formed. Except in exam situations and the like, thorough editing is an essential aspect in the writing process. 

Often, students struggle with this aspect of the process the most. After spending hours of effort on planning, research, and writing the first draft, students can be reluctant to go back over the same terrain they have so recently travelled. It is important at this point to give them some helpful guidelines to help them to know what to look out for. The following tips will provide just such help: 

One Piece at a Time: There is a lot to look out for in the editing process and often students overlook aspects as they try to juggle too many balls during the process. One effective strategy to combat this is for students to perform a number of rounds of editing with each focusing on a different aspect. For example, the first round could focus on content, the second round on looking out for word repetition (use a thesaurus to help here), with the third attending to spelling and grammar.

Sum It Up: When reviewing the paragraphs they have written, a good starting point is for students to read each paragraph and attempt to sum up its main point in a single line. If this is not possible, their readers will most likely have difficulty following their train of thought too and the paragraph needs to be overhauled.

Let It Breathe: When possible, encourage students to allow some time for their essay to ‘breathe’ before returning to it for editing purposes. This may require some skilful time management on the part of the student, for example, a student rush-writing the night before the deadline does not lend itself to effective editing. Fresh eyes are one of the sharpest tools in the writer’s toolbox.

Read It Aloud: This time-tested editing method is a great way for students to identify mistakes and typos in their work. We tend to read things more slowly when reading aloud giving us the time to spot errors. Also, when we read silently our minds can often fill in the gaps or gloss over the mistakes that will become apparent when we read out loud.

Phone a Friend: Peer editing is another great way to identify errors that our brains may miss when reading our own work. Encourage students to partner up for a little ‘you scratch my back, I scratch yours’.

Use Tech Tools: We need to ensure our students have the mental tools to edit their own work and for this they will need a good grasp of English grammar and punctuation. However, there are also a wealth of tech tools such as spellcheck and grammar checks that can offer a great once-over option to catch anything students may have missed in earlier editing rounds.

Putting the Jewels on Display: While some struggle to edit, others struggle to let go. There comes a point when it is time for students to release their work to the reader. They must learn to relinquish control after the creation is complete. This will be much easier to achieve if the student feels that they have done everything in their control to ensure their essay is representative of the best of their abilities and if they have followed the advice here, they should be confident they have done so.

Besides this, efforts continue to execute works of common benefit for the village community, such as village roads, tanks, gas plants, technical know-how centers, and adult education units in the rural sector. The community development program has shown excellent results during the Five Year Plans. Primary health centers and veterinary health care units are roaring with improved life and livestock. A new awakening has now dawned upon village people heading for a bold advance in the new set-up. Village boys and girls are now teeming with the latest information on various topics touching on science, politics, and life itself.

An essential aspect of community development is the Panchayati Raj has been introduced in all the provinces. The panchayat system has been thought necessary to decentralize and democratize community development administration. The system envisages a far-reaching change in the structure of local administration and rural development.

Its chief purpose is to involve all the people living in rural areas to work for their own development and betterment. Because of this massive program launched under different names by different financial institutions, the face of the Indian villages is quickly changing. The government of the day appears to be alive to its duties towards the vast rural population in the country. India, it has been rightly saying, lives not in its towns but in its villages. Therefore, the village uplift program is being taken up as the top priority.

That is why that plans are always afoot to see that the farmer gets a proper price for his produce and all the inputs required by him are made available to him at a subsidized price.

The village uplift program is poised for a bold advance. Much, however, remains to be done. Prosperity has, no doubt, percolated to villages. But the landless agricultural laborers are still a neglected lot. Red tape and unscrupulous and dishonest officers are blocking the roads to the prosperity of villages.

Dirty politics has also crept into the fabric of village life. Vices like drinking, gambling, and litigation still play havoc with the lives of the people in villages. It is time that village people recognized their new role in the new set-up and managed their affairs. Rural employment, health, education, sanitation, cooperative farming, storage of wheat and rice, and an increase in agriculture and industrial production are the areas that still demand their attention. Let us hope that villages in India regain their old glory, health, and prosperity.

The problem of air, noise, and water pollution assumes serious proportions. Increasing industrialization is playing havoc on the environment. Industrial waste, smoke, and other gases are polluting the air in a big way. Apart from industries, traffic density also contributes to air pollution.

The emission of smoke and toxic chemicals has been raising the level of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere. The permissible limits of noise pollution have been exceeded in the cities of Kolkata, Delhi, and Mumbai. Air pollution is responsible for respiratory ailments, T.B., skin allergy, eye ailments, cancer, and mental retardation in children. The proliferation of chemical industries has accentuated the problem. There are even more dangerous chemicals in use in the country than the MIC of the Union Carbide factory at Bhopal.

River waters have been mainly polluted because of the discharge of untreated industrial wastes, municipal sullage, and drainage of pesticides and fertilizers. All these have adversely affected their self-purifying mechanism by destroying their natural aquatic species.

Exhaust from automobiles is a significant source of air pollution. Many vehicles emit three to four percent of carbon monoxide, which is dangerous to health. An increase of chemicals in the atmosphere causes acid rains hundreds of miles away. These rains damage the soil and destroy vegetation and aquatic species in rivers and seas. They also corrode buildings.

The thin layer of ozone in the atmosphere is a form of life-sustaining system. It cuts out ultra-violet rays and allows the heat-generating infrared rays to reach the earth. But due to industrialization and consequent pollution, the ozone layer’s depletion rate is large. Its inability to absorb ultra-violet rays may lead to the “greenhouse” effect and widespread cancer incidence.

Marine pollution is yet another problem caused by the discharge of sewage and harbor waste in coastal waters. Oil pollution arises from tanker accidents, refinery effluents, and oil pipelines. This results in the destruction of marine life and threatens our ecosystem.

Nuclear pollution threatens life more than any other pollution today. Accidents can happen in nuclear plants, and when these happen, they can be catastrophic for large sections of the people. Nuclear radiation endangers the entire life-support system — plants, vegetation, animals, water, air, and human health.

Apart from all these pollutions, outer space pollution creates a severe threat to the globe. Space debris has become a reality because of the litter and garbage of thousands of space objects, dead satellites, spent rockets, motors, nuts, and bolts.

The release of gases by rockets has adverse effects. Re-entry of large objects into the atmosphere may also affect radio communication. Thus the ultimate victim of every kind of pollution, directly or indirectly, is man himself. Humanity today stands puzzled. A disaster threatens mankind shortly.

Air may become unfit for breathing in just a hundred years, while water may become unfit for human consumption. Scientists today are busy finding ways and means to fight this terrible pollution hazard but have not so far succeeded in their mission.

In the recent past, the Supreme Court of India has noted increasing pollution in the country. Several judgments announced by The court had directed the people to see that pollution of air and water is avoided as far as possible. Vehicles of all types have been required to conform to certain fixed norms regarding the gases added to the air.

Similarly, factories and other commercial units have also been asked to stick to the government’s anti-pollution norms. Local bodies have been asked to use better hygienic conditions. All these steps are likely to go a long way in fighting the menace of pollution, but a lot remains to be done.

Brain Drain is an oft-heard expression used in India. This refers to exporting or going from India’s Indian brains to foreign countries. We term it a drain of the brains because it is believed that, with the going out of these best brains, we, as a country, are at a loss. With our best brains working for other countries, we are left only with mediocre and lesser brains to work and develop with.

At the outset, let us analyze why there is so much of this exodus of brains from India and, without making much of a hullabaloo about the brains, try to check the drain. It is, however, a matter of pride for all of us Indians to realize that the world has, as of today, recognized the Indian brain among the best brains in the world. This is why foreign countries encourage importing the Indian brain.

On the other hand, our brains are also happy to go out because they get a congenial working atmosphere out there. There, in foreign lands, there is an appreciation of good work, and the work environment is friendly, unlike the prevailing conditions in India. Besides this, the handsome pay packets are no match to the slim counterpart of a paid return here in India. With this situation in which the Indian brains and the foreign countries find the business lucrative and very satisfying; how and why should it be stopped?

Regarding the why of the question, I feel it should be curtailed if not stopped because, if the best go out, what are the prospects of development in our own country? For this, again, we, ourselves, are to blame. If we make the atmosphere healthier for good work, I feel at least some of the brains may stay back in India. With all their expertise going out, we have to accept that India is at a loss, but we cannot blame the people going out as, who do not want to improve their standard of life.

The fact of their going out does, on the face of it appear to be unfair to India for, when we have the know-how, the expertise, why should we not reap the benefit of it all; however, to take this advantage of the brains, we have to do something to lure them to stay within, for which I daresay, India has to do a lot of work.

The solution is not simply regarding how this brain drain can be stopped, but it is not impossible. The Government must see that the working environment and appreciation be given to exemplary work.

The pay packets can also be enhanced to attract at least a few brains who may be less ambitious and patriotic. For, I believe that several brains may prefer to stay back in India if the requisite changes are made for them in the the entire system of working patterns.

Thus, to prevent a brain drain from India, it is not sufficient to just shout about it and make an issue of it. We must work towards the goal of providing them with at least the near amenities to them as what they would get in any of the foreign lands they may choose to go to. If we try this, we may succeed in holding back at least a few of them from helping us to develop India.

The brain drain may be causing concern to us as the best of our Indian brains go out of the country. However, there is not only a black cloud of missing out on our best but there is also a silver lining to the drain. The brains that go out of India are by now such a substantial number that they form a vast community in themselves, called the Non-Resident Indians.

These goals are a constant source of income for India in terms of foreign exchange. With their remittances home, they contribute substantially to building up the country’s foreign exchange.

Thus, this brain drain is and will continue unless we put a stopper by providing them with more working facilities at home and giving them more than the other ordinary brains in terms of pecuniary benefits. As long as we can’t do this for them or don’t do this for them, the brain drain cannot be stopped, and the best Indians will continue to find homes abroad.

While they continue to go out, we, the Indians, will have to continue being happy with the fact that they have at least become a force to reckon with, and they get a lot of name and fame.

10th grade English Language Arts skills: Find out what you need to know for your student

Want to help your 10th-grader with reading and writing? Here are some of the skills your teen will be learning in the classroom.

Reading & writing

Rich and challenging texts

Read closely from rich and challenging ninth grade-level texts, with guidance when text is particularly demanding. By the end of 10th grade, read grade-level texts closely, proficiently, and independently.

Some sample texts for ninth and 10th graders:

• "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck
• "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe.
• “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe
• “Gettysburg Address” by Abraham Lincoln
• “I Have a Dream: Address Delivered at the March on Washington, D.C., for Civil Rights on August 28, 1963” by Martin Luther King, Jr.
• “Classifying the Stars” by Annie J. Cannon.

Citing evidence

Cite evidence (facts, figures, quotes, or other information) that best supports what a literary or informational text says, as well as what it implies or suggests.

Analyzing theme development

Analyze the way an author develops the theme or central idea of a text, and which details shape and refine it. Summarize the text objectively.

Outlining arguments

Outline the argument and specific claims in a text. Evaluate whether the reasoning is valid and whether there is enough relevant and meaningful evidence to support the claims. Identify misleading statements and faulty reasoning.

Tip: Discuss the news.

Help your child become a more discerning consumer of news and information. Have an ongoing discussion with her about how you get your news and how you decide which sources to trust. Point out examples of misleading information you see, such as in ads, so that your child learns to be skeptical of some sources. Have her look for corrections in the local newspaper so that she sees examples of how news can be misreported. Bookmark some Internet sites that you consider reliable and that she can use as reference or information sources.

Understanding vocabulary

Read and understand ninth and 10th grade vocabulary, and analyze the way an author’s use of language (including word choices and imagery) affects the meaning and tone of a text.

How does the language suggest a sense of time or place in a literary text? How is the language of a court opinion different from the language of a newspaper?

Tip: Use technology to build vocab.

As your child progresses through high school, specialized vocabulary becomes increasingly important in many of her classes. If your child uses a smartphone or iPad, help her locate apps that focus on vocabulary development for specific subjects. There are many versions of digital flashcards that can help your child expand her vocabulary.

Using new words and phrases

Use different strategies to understand new words and phrases; for example, use context as a clue; use related words as a clue ( conceive, conception, conceivable ); consult a dictionary or thesaurus online or in print.

Developing arguments

Write arguments to support claims on important topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. Develop claims and counterclaims fairly, providing evidence for each while also pointing out their strengths and limitations.

Informative papers

Write informative or explanatory papers that examine a topic and express ideas by carefully selecting and analyzing information. Use precise language and content area vocabulary to express ideas.

Creating stories

Write stories or narratives about real or imaginary experiences. Set out a problem, situation, or observation; establish one or more points of view; and develop story elements such as characters, a well-sequenced plot, and descriptive details.

Supporting evidence

Include evidence from text to support thinking and research.

Producing and publishing

Use technology to produce and publish writing, to work with others on writing, and to link to new information.

Basic rules of English

Use basic rules of English grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling in written work.

• Use parallel structure ( Joseph likes to walk, to work, and to eat. )
• Use phrases and clauses to add variety and interest to writing.
• Use colons and semicolons correctly.

Listening & speaking

Class discussion

Initiate and participate in class discussions about complex 9th and 10th grade topics, texts, and issues. Be prepared to draw on textual or research evidence when expressing ideas, to respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives, and to make new connections based on evidence and reasoning that others present.

Evaluating points of view

Listen to and evaluate another speaker’s point of view, reasoning and use of evidence. Identify faulty reasoning or misleading evidence.

Giving a presentation

Give a well-organized presentation, expressing information, research findings, and supporting evidence clearly, concisely, and logically.

Research & inquiry

Research projects

Conduct short and long research projects to answer a research question, including a self-created question, or to solve a problem. Combine information from multiple print and online sources, showing an understanding of the subject.

Tip: Encourage longer writing projects.

The long days of summer are perfect for teen writers to take on bigger projects. Challenge your high schooler to uncover the stories of relatives, neighbors, or friends and to turn those stories into a published history project. For example, she might investigate who has lived in the neighborhood the longest, how the street has changed, or what happened when relatives moved to their current home. Start by helping your teen develop a list of questions. She can then interview these relatives and neighbors to find out some interesting facts and stories and write up the findings as a narrative, a poem, or even in question/answer format. Finally, she can illustrate or take photographs to make the history come alive!

Tip: Include writing in your family traditions.

Help your child be a part of your family holiday traditions and include writing at the same time. Have her interview elderly family members or friends about their traditions in celebrating the holidays. She can then turn the information from these interviews into several kinds of writing, from photos with captions to illustrated stories to poems. These writings could turn into a special and much-valued gift to the family member or friend.

Locating information

Locate information efficiently; use advanced search methods online.

Evaluating sources

Evaluate the usefulness of each source in answering the research question, and use information selectively. Cite sources appropriately to avoid plagiarizing or copying.

Descriptive composition.

A descriptive composition describes people, animals, places or things that really exist or are imaginary.

Sample topics with guidelines for writing

1. An unusual person

Note down some details about this person.

His/her name; interesting features; achievements

What makes him/her different from the average person

Qualities of the person; humble, kind, talented, exceptional, famous, notorious, modest

2. You are staying in a hostel and have made a few good friends. Write a letter to your parents, describing one of those close friends in about 350-400 words. You may follow the guidelines provided.

Your relationship with the person – relative or friend

How did you become acquainted?

Qualities of the person; warm, kind, generous, understanding, jovial, admirable, interesting, helpful

Other qualities – a willingness to teach you many things. (You may decide to state the qualities directly or you may prefer to give instances of things the person did or said to demonstrate the qualities you mentioned.)

Your own feelings towards the person.

3. You are writing a letter to your pen friend. In your letter you describe your neighbourhood.

General impression of location, appearance, and occupation of residents.

Your relationship with neighbours – friendly, helpful, interfering, indifferent, quarrelsome. Give a few examples of how attitudes are shown.

Your feelings about living in this neighbourhood

Your idea of an ideal neighbourhood.

Sample descriptive composition topics

• Describe an occasion when you found yourself in an awkward position.
• Write about an occasion when you did not heed advice that was given to you.
• A person I admire very much.
• Describe some of your experiences as a member of a study project.

Narrative composition

A narrative composition tells a story. It may be about something fictitious or it may be about a real event.

Sample topics with guidelines

1. You are trapped on the tenth floor of a burning building. Write an exciting narrative with yourself as the main character. Give your story a title.

You may start like this:

About ten in the morning, we were alarmed by shouts of ‘fire’ in the building. We made a dash for the stairs but found that the smoke was too thick. The emergency exit, for some unknown reason, was sealed. Someone telephoned the fire brigade….

2. Complete this story about a girl who was leaving home. Make sure that there is conflict and an unexpected outcome.

Where was Farah going?

Why was she leaving home?

What thoughts and feelings were running through her mind as she sat in the train?

Did her parents know she was leaving? How did she feel about it?

What decision did she make in the train?

What happened in the end?

You may begin like this.

At 6.30 that Monday morning, Farah slipped out of the house with her suitcase and walked into the drizzle. By seven she was sitting in the train bound for…..

Sample narrative composition topics

Expository composition

The expository composition deals more with facts and ideas rather than with personal impressions. The main skills involved are describing, explaining and interpreting.

Tips for Writing and Delivering a Speech

Research your topic thoroughly.

• Use reliable sources of information, such as books, articles, websites, or videos, to gather facts, statistics, examples, and quotes that support your main points.
• Cite your sources properly and avoid plagiarism.

Organize Your Speech Logically

• Use a clear and coherent structure that consists of an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. 
• In the introduction, state your topic, purpose, and thesis statement. In the body, develop your main points with supporting details. 
• In the conclusion, summarize your main points and restate your thesis statement.

Use Appropriate Language and Style

• Choose words and phrases that suit your topic, audience, and purpose. 
• Use simple and clear sentences that convey your meaning effectively. 
• Avoid jargon, slang, or idioms that may confuse or offend your listeners. 
• Use transitions to connect your ideas and create a smooth flow.

Common Mistakes in English Speeches

Mixing up “lend” and “borrow.” These verbs have opposite meanings: “lend” means to give something temporarily to someone else; “borrow” means to take something temporarily from someone else. 

Example-1: 

• Can you lend me your pen? (correct) 
• Can you borrow me your pen? (incorrect)

Confusing “me too” and “me either.” These expressions are used to agree with someone else’s statement: “me too” is used for positive statements; “me either” is used for negative statements.

Example-2: 

• I like pizza. Me too! (correct) 
• I don’t like pizza. Me either! (correct) 
• I like pizza. Me either! (incorrect) 
• I don’t like pizza. Me too! (incorrect)

Saying, “I have 20 years old” instead of “I am 20 years old”. In English, we use the verb “be” to talk about age; we don’t use the verb “have.” 

Example-3:

Using Double Negatives

Misplacing Modifiers

A modifier is a word or phrase that adds information or description to another word or phrase; it should be placed as close as possible to the word or phrase it modifies; otherwise, it can cause confusion or ambiguity.

• He saw a dog walking down the street with a red collar. (incorrect; it sounds like the person was walking with a red collar.)
• He saw a dog with a red collar walking down the street. (correct)
