Vital for both physical and mental wellbeing, co-curricular activities such as sport are also seen as important for boosting transferable skills and ultimately a student’s future success. For while exam results may gain that place to university or job interview, increasingly employers and universities are looking for the added extras – the participation in a sports team, dramatic arts or Duke of Edinburgh Award’s Scheme – to separate one candidate from another.

Gordon’s, a non-selective, state boarding school in Surrey has long believed in a holistic approach to education. Long days (day students do their prep and have supper at school along with the residential boarders) and a rigorous academic timetable.

But there is also a strong focus on the co-curricular. Every student has the opportunity of playing a sport at least once a day or indulging in one of the 128 plus activities on offer from the Arts or Brazilian Jujitsu to board games or robotics.

Many students choose to join the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) in the Army, Navy or Air Force and the school also boasts a higher than average number embarking on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme with over 100 signed up for the Bronze Award this year. In addition, to these co-curricular activities, as the national memorial to Victorian war hero General Charles Gordon, all the students march and take part in around eight parades every year.

For the skills of leadership, problem-solving, confidence and perseverance acquired on the games field, trekking as part of a Duke of Edinburgh Award, performing in a school play or orchestra, or marching in a parade along Whitehall in London, are ones that will sustain them through not just their school career but entire life.

Further life skills, in critical thinking, effective communication as well as independent research and teamwork can be gained by seizing the opportunities for public speaking and debating through mediums such as MUN (Model United Nations), Young Enterprise and speaking competitions.

Students at Gordon’s also have the chance to study for an Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) industry-recognised qualification, which not only aids them in leadership roles at school but in the working world.

Every student belongs to a House and competitions between Houses, from debating to dancing, are fiercely contested. The inter-house competitions allow every student the opportunity to play representative sport at school or take part in an arts competition, promoting a ‘have a go’ attitude. Similarly, all students can play a part in the school’s numerous stage productions, whether acting, singing, dancing or behind the scenes directing, sourcing costumes or managing the sound system, it’s a team effort.

All the major sports are represented at Gordon’s as well as equestrian ; golf; karting and cycling. The new sports hall, completed in 2020 alongside another all-weather sports pitch, enables sportsmen and women at the school to compete in even more disciplines such as futsal; badminton, indoor cricket , athletics, football and basketball whatever the weather.

In September 2020 the school also welcomed the first clutch of students on the Harlequins DiSE (Diploma in Sporting Excellence) programme, which provides a pathway for 16-18 year olds pursuing a professional career in rugby .

The commitment to sports extends to the school’s staff. Many of them have excelled in their fields, ensuring the highest level of coaching and commitment. The impressive line-up includes Pakistan Olympic Hockey player Muhammad Irfan together with former GB hockey player David Mathews; Olympic Gold hockey medallist with 188 caps for GB and England, Susannah Townsend MBE; former Wales International and ex-Chelsea player Gareth Hall and former GB national and Olympic coach Alan Inns.

Some students leave Gordon’s for American universities on scholarships for golf and football. Others are set to tread a path to becoming a professional sportsman or woman in this country. But all take part in some form of competitive sport, whatever their ability.

Activities offered to minot public schools students.

Minot’s public schools offer dozens of extracurricular activities for their students, of which one of the most popular is band. The abundance of musical activities brings in many students interested in music, from jazz band to marching band.

“Minot Public Schools offers band to all 5-12 grade students,” said Jeremy Meinert, co-director of the sixth grade Ramstad Band.. “Jazz band is offered to seventh-12th grade students who are already in band. Summer band is open to students who are just starting out (going into fifth grade band) and is also offered to those students who are intermediate to advanced. The summer lessons are held one hour daily, for two weeks starting in mid-June.”

All students are involved in band practice at school with their band teachers and have many opportunities to perform.

“Students who are in fifth grade band have weekly lessons with their band teachers,” Meinert said. “Starting in sixth grade, band class is held daily and students will have a lot of playing opportunities, including two concerts, solo and ensemble festival and honor band.”

As students get older and have more and more experience and practice, the opportunities to perform only grow.

Performance opportunities include solo and ensemble, Jazz Band, Pep Band, Marching Band and festivals.

Meinert also co-directs the ninth-12th grade bands at Minot High School Central Campus.

“I will be involved in many of the spring concerts,” he said. “The most well attended concert will probably be Chuck Full of Music (fundraiser) held April 15 at Minot High School, where all seven-12 grade bands, choirs, and orchestras will perform a variety of music.”

The ninth-12th grade band will play selections from “Star Trek” and “Lord of the Rings.” Meinert will co-direct with Evan Meiers, who has been the main director at Minot High School for the past three years.

“The nine-12 band will be marching in the Bismarck Band Night on Friday, May 10. All of the Minot Public School jazz bands will be performing in the Spring Jazz Concert at Minot High School as well,” Meinert said.
