How Saudi Arabia Celebrates Its National Day

Saudi Arabia celebrates its national day every September 23, and 2018 marks its 88th iteration.

Saudi National Day commemorates the name changing of what was previously known as the Kingdom of Nejd and Hejaz to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Here’s your need-to-know guide.

The Kingdom of Nejd and Hejaz was a dual monarchy made up of many dominions and tribes. In the early 1900s, the ruler of Nejd, King Abdul Aziz (known as Ibn Saud – or ‘son of Saud’ in the West), reconquered his family’s ancestral home city of Riyadh and began nearly three decades of conquests in the region. By 1932, his forces managed to gain control over most of central Arabia and he changed the name of his realm to his family name, the House of Saud. Saudi National Day celebrates the passing of this royal decree and is now a public holiday in the Kingdom.

For instance, celebrations in 2009 focused on the launch of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, one of the most ambitious educational initiatives in the country. The university was inaugurated by the late King Abdullah in the presence of a number of heads of state of the world. In 2014, the Jeddah Municipality launched the world’s tallest flagpole to mark the Saudi national day.

This year’s National Day has some of the biggest celebrations

Saudi National Day is increasingly celebrated with folklore dances, traditional festivals and other cultural activities arranged in all major cities in the Kingdom.

This year, the 88th Saudi National Day falls on a Sunday – the event has been extended by a day on the orders of King Salman, meaning that September 24 is also an off day. Celebrations will include a four-day event taking place in Old Jeddah (also one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites), that will host 22 cultural activities including traditional poetry recitations, music concerts, art shows, and film events that will reflect on the country’s history while highlighting the talent and potential it has today.

In Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, a celebration called “Adwaa wa Atya” (Lights and Spectra) has been arranged which includes 3D ‘light’ shows, concerts, art exhibitions, and a pavilion set up that reflects on the country’s cultural heritage.

“It’s really an opportunity to get together with friends or family and just celebrating what our country means to us, how far it has come, and the progress we hope it will make in the near future,” says Faisal Alidarous, a 32-year-old Saudi based in Riyadh. “And these events are a great way for kids to learn about their heritage.”

Roads and buildings throughout the kingdom are also decorated with Saudi flags. Green balloons are handed out in parks and shopping malls and most restaurants and brands offer ‘national day discounts’.

“It’s pretty much just like how any country celebrates its national day, I guess,” says Rahma Mohamed, a 23-year-old Saudi based in Jeddah. “I don’t do much, as such, but driving around and seeing all the flags and people sometimes dressed in green makes me feel pride in my people. It’s just a day to be proud of our heritage. And, for me, it’s a day to sleep in late because it’s a holiday.”

The nearly 10 million immigrants in Saudi Arabia, a country with a total population of around 33 million, also take part in the celebrations and, for many, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about the country’s history.

Emphasis has been placed by the General Entertainment Authority to focus on creating an opportunity to learn about the life and work of King Abdulaziz and how Saudi Arabia came to be. For instance, a public library has rare photographs of the King Abdulaziz from the early 1930s that show him interacting with the youth and tribal leaders of the newly created Saudi Arabia.

Overall, it’s a day to celebrate the heritage of Saudi Arabia, to appreciate its culture, and to promote pride in the country and its rich history.

National Day Celebration

Shirley and Keith were excited. It was National Day, a day to celebrate Singapore’s independence. They had always been excited when it was National Day as they knew that they would be able to watch a spectacular fireworks display.

Just the day before in school, they had celebrated by watching concerts and having some games. The teachers also told them of the hard times early Singaporeans faced helping the country gain independence.

Shirley and Keith were very proud of Singapore’s achievements as well as being Singaporeans. That was why they would always sign up for the celebration in the neighbourhood.

In the evening, after dinner, they brought the flags that they had made and went down to join the crowd. Everyone was dressed in red and white. They sang National Day songs and there were games for every resident to take part. There were also some performances by pupils and residents. It was indeed an entertaining concert.

There was also a mega television screen, showing the actual National Day Parade that was held at the Padang. Everyone cheered when the fireworks display was shown. Over at where they were, there was a smaller scale of fireworks, making the atmosphere livelier

Soon, it was time to go home. Shirley and Keith bade their neighbours farewell. They had a great time and they could not wait for the National Day next year.

While not an official holiday, National Siblings Day on April 10 has gained momentum on social media in recent years.

Every April 10 for several years now, many social media feeds are transformed into a virtual family album of sorts, as friends and acquaintances post photos to mark National Siblings Day.

But unlike many of the unofficial holidays that clutter the calendar year — from Talk Like a Pirate Day to National French Fry Day — National Siblings Day is neither frivolous nor commercially motivated. Instead, it is a holiday born of profound love — and loss.

As NPR's Science Desk explores the science of siblings , we decided to reach out to Claudia Evart, the woman who conceived the holiday. She grew up with an older brother and sister. They were her first best friends, her support and her mentors, she says.

The origin story of National Siblings Day

Tragically, both of Evart's siblings died at young ages in separate accidents. Her sister, Lisette, was just 19 when she was killed in a car accident, alongside their father. Evart was 17. Fourteen years later, Evart's brother, Alan, died after hitting his head in a fall.

"You always think they'll be there," she says. "And I took them for granted, and I didn't realize how much they meant to me. Until you lose them, [then] you realize what you lost. "

In 1995, a decade after Alan's death, Evart says she was celebrating her own birthday in late March when she was struck by an overpowering sense of sadness and loneliness. "I came to the realization that I would never again celebrate my birthday with my beloved siblings . "

The Science of Siblings Series

At the heart of this cozy coffee shop lies a big sister's love for her little brother.

"It's the most powerful relationship you ever have in your life," she says, adding, "It's a very hard thing to lose your siblings. The void is just so intense."

Evart says she created National Siblings Day both to honor her own siblings' memories and to encourage widespread recognition of the unique bond between siblings. It's on April 10 every year because that is Lisette's birthday. "We have Mother's and Father's Day. Why not have your siblings recognized?"

While National Siblings Day isn't a federal holiday, former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama have all issued letters recognizing the day, according to the Siblings Day Foundation , which Evart founded.

Evart says she'd like to see people mark the day by taking the time to cherish their siblings. "Whether you're reliving childhood memories, planning an outing or simply spending quality time together, let's make this day special. Reach out to your siblings, near and far, and let them know how much they mean to you."

As for those photos and heartfelt messages that will likely flood social media again this year? "It's the greatest thing," she says.

National Maritime Day, celebrated annually in India on April 5, honours those who spend months at sea, contributing to India’s trade. It also commemorates the inaugural voyage of the first Indian-owned ship. This year, the Government of India will celebrate the National Maritime Day alongside the Merchant Navy Week from March 30 to April 5. The National Maritime Day offers an opportunity to emphasise the role of the maritime industry in India’s economic growth and highlights the sacrifice of seafarers who not only run the trade but also partake in national security by deterring pirate attacks.

History and Significance

The National Maritime Day was first celebrated in 1964 by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways. This year will mark the 61st National Maritime Day. The day not only celebrates India’s maritime might, but also commemorates the inaugural voyage of the first Indian-owned ship, SS Loyalty from Mumbai to London on April 5, 1919.

The maiden voyage of SS Loyalty symbolised India’s aspiration of becoming a key stakeholder in the maritime sector. The SS Loyalty also put a dent in the monopoly of the British shipping companies.

The day serves as a platform to highlight issues affecting the maritime industry such as ocean pollution, lack of global cooperation to ensure safe voyages, and improving working conditions for ship and port workers.

How it is celebrated

The National Maritime Day celebrations are held across the country, but major ports such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Kandla, and Visakhapatnam see special government-supported events such as seminars, medical camps, and blood donation drives.

The National Maritime Day celebrations include observing the Merchant Navy Flag Day and the Wreath Laying Ceremony to honour the sailors who lost their lives in the First and Second world wars.

On National Maritime Day, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways presents the Sagar Samman Awards to those who display “exceptional and outstanding all-round and leadership” and “outstanding bravery” in the maritime sector.

The awards include the Sagar Samman Varuna Award, which is the highest category of award, the Sagar Samman Award for Excellence, and the Sagar Samman Award for Gallantry.

The best Indian ship-owning companies, maritime training institutes, and Indian Ports are also recognised with a number of awards.

India’s growth as an emerging maritime superpower

Today, India has become the 16th largest maritime country in the world, supported by about 200 non-major ports and 12 major ports.

As per a March 2024, press release by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, “over the last 9 years, the number of seafarers has increased by 140 per cent.”

Additionally, the Indian seafarers “occupy 12 percent of international seafaring jobs”. By 2023, the ministry wants this figure to touch 20 per cent.

There's also video of a man who had not seen his sister for 24 years was shocked when she appeared in a photo behind him, in a surprise visit arranged by his family.

In another clip, a man who moved to the U.S. from Ivory Coast to pursue tennis was reunited with his sister at the airport for the first time in four years.

What is National Siblings Day?

Also referred to as Sibling Day, the annual observance falls on April 10 and is meant to honor one's siblings.

It was founded in 1995 by Claudia Evart as a way to honor and celebrate siblings. According to the National Day Calendar , Evart had lost two siblings early in life in separate accidents. Evart created the Siblings Day Foundation and chose April 10 as the day of observance in honor of her sister, Lisette's birthday.

If you're an only child, fret not: Only Child Day is April 12, just a few days after National Siblings Day. There are also separate Brothers Day and Sisters Day in May and August, respectively.

Gazans Find Little to Celebrate as Eid al-Fitr Begins at the End of Ramadan

The holiday used to be a joyful time in Gaza. But with Israel’s military offensive and famine threatening the enclave, Palestinians there feel far from any sense of festivity.

As Eid al-Fitr approached, Amani Abu Awda’s four children began asking her for new clothes and toys — festive items that Muslims customarily buy to celebrate the holiday that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan .

But Ms. Abu Awda, a mother of four from northern Gaza, is now displaced with her family in a tent in the southern city of Rafah, far from any sense of festivity and the home that once hosted large family gatherings.

“Oh, God, I couldn’t get anything for them because of the high prices,” she said Saturday, days before most Muslims worldwide would celebrate Eid al-Fitr. “I had to go try and find used clothing. In normal days, we would never buy such things. But I couldn’t even find any used clothes.”

Eid al-Fitr — the three-day celebration beginning Wednesday that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan — used to be a joyful time in Gaza. But with famine threatening Gaza amid Israel’s continuing military offensive, Palestinians there say there is little to celebrate.

Ms. Abu Awda’s family managed to take some clothes when they fled their home in Jabaliya two months ago. But at a checkpoint, Israeli soldiers made them throw away everything they were carrying as they walked along a dangerous road where some Palestinians had disappeared into detention and others were killed in Israeli airstrikes, she said.

“What kind of Eid is this?” Ms. Abu Awda said, adding, “We have lost so much. We have lost family and loved ones. We have lost our homes and we have lost safety. The feeling of death is with us in every moment, and the smell of death is everywhere.”

More than anything, Ms. Abu Awda said, they want a cease-fire for Eid.

Much as Ramadan , a month of daylong fasts and religious observance, was marked by bittersweet remembrances of how it used to be observed before Israel’s war in Gaza, Eid will be characterized by longing comparisons for how different the occasion was just a year ago.

Before the war, malls would be packed with families buying new clothes for the holiday and sweets to offer all the relatives that would come by to visit in the days leading up to Eid.

Now those relatives are almost all displaced, packed into small homes with others or sweltering tents made of plastic sheeting.

Many Muslims in the Middle East visit the graves of their loved ones on Eid. But with so many killed since the war began in October and with many of them buried in makeshift graves or yet to be recovered from under the rubble, holding on to that tradition now is impossible for most.

The Gaza Ministry of Health says that more than 33,000 people have been killed in Gaza over six months of Israeli bombardment.

In Gaza City, some people have strung small lights or paper decorations in the streets. But it has done little to improve the overall grim feeling, said Alina Al-Yazji, a 20-year-old university student.

“The streets, instead of smelling like cookies and mamoul and sumaqia and faseekh and all these wonderful smells,” Ms. Al-Yazji said, naming some of the traditional sweet and savory dishes eaten during Eid, “instead, the streets smell of blood and killing and destruction.”

As she spoke, the sound of an Israeli fighter jet roared overhead.

Sitting in her tent in Rafah, Muna Daloob, 50, couldn’t help but remember past holidays, before her family fled its home in Gaza City.

She said she wasn’t making any Eid cookies or mamoul or faseekh because she didn’t have cooking gas and because all the ingredients, including flour and sugar, were too expensive or in short supply.

She held out hope that she could at least find — and afford — the smallest of gifts to bring a smile to her grandchildren: a lollipop.

For 22-year-old Mohammad Shehada, as for other Palestinian men, Eid comes with the expectation to give monetary gifts, called eidiya.

In most Muslim cultures, adults give small eidiyas to children. But Palestinians give the money to both children and adult female relatives. Even before the war, some Palestinian men in Gaza struggled to afford to give the eidiya as a result of a 17-year land, air and sea blockade imposed on Gaza by Israel and supported by Egypt. Now, in the middle of war, the eidiya will be all but impossible for most people.

“The cheer of the kids gathering around you when you give them an eidiya, we’re not able to give it this year, and we’re going to feel ashamed,” he said.

Mr. Shehada hoped that some mosques, most of which have become shelters for the many displaced Gazans, would still hold morning Eid prayers. He hoped that he would be able to eat faseekh, a fermented fish dish, the simplest of Eid enjoyments, he said.

“I have a lot of hopes for Eid,” he said, “but firstly for them to end this revolting war.”
