  • After COVID-19 slumps, the global entertainment industry is set to rebound, a new PwC report says.
  • Online data consumption spiked 30% during pandemic.
  • Many consumption patterns and consumer habits learned during the pandemic will become embedded.
  • Live music and cinema are expected to bounce back.

How often did you hear the lament, during the worst of the COVID-19 induced lockdowns, ‘I think I’ve watched everything on Netflix’?

That surge in popularity for film and TV content delivered over the internet (known as “over-the-top”, or OTT) was one bright spot in an otherwise difficult year for the global entertainment and media industry – worth $2 trillion annually.

The industry, which saw a contraction in revenues due to the pandemic, is projected to rebound strongly and grow by more than a quarter by 2025 according to a new report from the global consulting firm PwC .

The analysis, based on consumer and advertising spending trends from 53 middle and higher-income countries, surveyed 14 sectors from book publishing, newspapers and traditional TV advertising, to spending on internet access, VR technology, and e-sports.

this graph shows that industry revenues are predicted to bounce back strongly

1. Pandemic consumption patterns are here to stay

Trends evident in the media and entertainment industry prior to COVID-19 – such as the growing market dominance of digital sales, streaming services, gaming and user-generated content – were hastened by the pandemic.

While the industry expects some kind of a return to normal, consumption patterns and consumer habits learned during the pandemic will become embedded, according to the analysis.

Sectors in decline suffered greater losses in the battle for market share. These included traditional TV and home video, newspapers, and consumer magazines, although print books bucked the trend in some markets.

Have you read?

Game on: how covid-19 became the perfect match for gamers, covid-19 has upended the media industry. this is how it can come back stronger, media and entertainment in flux: it's time for the close-up.

Areas seeing above-average growth over the past year, aside from OTT video, include video games, internet advertising, and virtual reality – projected to be the fastest-growing area over the next few years.

this graph shows that steady growth in spending is fuelled by digital formats

2. Connectivity is driving growth

It’s become something of a truism to say that internet access is now a basic and essential utility across the developed and developing worlds. But it’s also a driver of growth.

With so many consumers stuck at home, the surge in downloaded and streamed content led to some internet service providers reporting a 60% spike in data usage, and an overall figure of 30% more data consumed.

While smartphone connections are projected to continue their global growth (from 4.6 billion connections in 2020) an increasing number of consumers invested in fixed broadband internet connections during the year taking the total to 1.1bn households.

The combined data consumption projections are a whopping 26.9% growth per year, meaning that upgraded infrastructure, including the long-promised 5G technology, is likely to move from desirable to essential for much of the world.

this graph shows that mobile will increase its share of internet access across revenue

3. Live experiences will live on

It’s no secret that the pandemic hit live and in-person entertainment experiences hard and the live music business – almost entirely shut down in most countries around the world – lost 74.4% in revenues compared to the year before.

Workarounds such as drive-in concerts offered some semblance of the experience but there is a widespread expectation – and some evidence already – that the demand for live events will rebound strongly.

But caution will remain due to uncertainty over further COVID variants, and globally, stark inequities over vaccine distribution.

a graph showing how live music was hit hardest by COVID-19

4. Cinema’s not dead yet

Cinema saw an unprecedented 70.4% decline in 2020 – and the pandemic prompted a rethink in the movie industry.

With very few theatres open, OTT platform Disney+ released Mulan as a premium digital product, and studios including Warner Bros followed up with simultaneous streaming and cinema releases for movies including the latest Marvel movie Black Widow.

this chart shows the predicted growth across a variety of different sectors

The PwC report says signs of a cinema revival are already underway, though, with the sector expected to rebound from 2020’s slump. Cinemas around the world are reopening and demand for filmed entertainment remains high.

And further in the future? It is likely both will co-exist. Research published in the Harvard Business Review suggests that the market expands when there is more choice and fears that digital will kill off cinema could be overstated .

Controversial Issues in Entertainment Expository Essay

Controversial issues in entertainment paper, nature of controversy, mass media messages on the controversy, new technology and how it affects news and advertising.

Sexual content in the media which is at times awfully explicit and insulting has been around for along period of time. It is worth mentioning that major occurrences in the world are controlled by the media. Sexual content in various media sources such as print and electronic has increased over the years and decency has become a style of the past.

Take an example of a half dressed female musician during performances. Such an individual is respected by teens as evident in several revelations that highlight the role model status attained by such musicians. The image of such a person is synonymous to the thoughts of our country’s general populace and that of people across the world.

A high percentage of such sexual content portrayed all over the media mostly affects the female population. An illustration is evident in the pressure exerted on women especially the young girls through advertisements, movies among others avenues. This is to encourage them to be attractive sexually and ultimately achieve the status of sexually activity.

The National Eating Disorder Association has conducted research on the effects of the media on women. It reports that in every four television commercials, one will send a message on attractiveness and this communicate to the viewers that one thing is attractive and another is not in a definite manner (Vivian 2009).

It has become a common thing in video games to see the characters dressed scantly, others barring breasts, cleavage while others expose their stomachs, thighs and midriffs. In advertizing, provocative images of women who are half naked or just naked is no longer an issue. A number of entities and individuals in their defense argue that these pictures grab their customers’ attention and in the process increase the volume of sales.

What most do not realize however is that by linking naked women to products, an impression that women are sexual objects is achieved. For example, a media activist Jean Kilbourne notes that bearing women’s bodies in parts gives the impression that women are not human beings but objects.

It is not everyone who views the sexual content in the media negatively. A number of researchers indicate that such sexual exposure of women can grant them the much needed liberation. An example is how Laurie Abraham of Elle magazine views the controversy. She says that one of the biggest problems with most women magazine is lying about sex.

She says that such lies keep on cultivating the idea that the sexuality of women is there to serve men. Nicole Krassas conducted a study on the playboy and cosmopolitan magazine and found that both the male and female magazines depict a woman’s sexuality to serve the purpose of satisfying men sexually therefore attracting them (Cope & Kunkel n. d).

In such modern days it is very saddening and disturbing to see the amount of misinformation and media stereotypes available to every one including the teens. Research has shown that a lot of teens turn to the media to teach them about sexuality and sexual relationships.

Another controversial issue that relates to sexuality is the over representation of unbelievably thin women in the media as physically and sexually attractive. Messages like how to lose weight in ten days or get the body of a goddess and keep your man are on the rise as evident in several magazines.

It is not surprising to find a movie which is not even rated showing men and women making out. This is not an exceptional situation but is taking the form of a norm. Some researchers are recommending that instead of condemning sexual content in the media and the media houses responsible for such an action, people should encourage the youth to first find their own authentic and unique sexuality and not portray sex as sinful.

It is not only women who are affected by the sexual content in media but also men. Masculinity has become a hot spot in today’s entertainment industry. The media has portrayed and shaped different and mostly wrong attitudes concerning masculinity in men.

The media has also portrayed various male stereotypes that most growing young men want to emulate. Stereotypes like the joker are common scenarios in the television. There are various consequences both positive and negative associated with this type of stereotype. An example is seen when teens assume that men should not portray emotions.

Another very common stereotype is the big shot. This can be both misleading and advantageous as it portrays the man as a powerful both economically and socially. It portrays that a real man has to be successful in both aspects to earn respect from fellow men and adoration by women (Brown & Keller 2000).

Sexual Content used in the Media and the difference it would make if such content was eliminated.

Most educators are not free to talk about contents that are sexually explicit to their students. What they do not understand is that many advertisers only understand the language of making sales and in their understanding, sex sales.

They believe that displaying their products with a little sexiness makes their products sale like hot cakes. For example music videos without half naked girls barring open their breasts and backsides would not sale as much the ones with such girls also movies with sex scenes, sale much faster than those without (Brown & Keller 2000).

Therefore most entertainment industry investors use sexuality as a marketing strategy for their products and most believe that this is the only strategy strong enough to make them enough profits (Vivian 2009). Most religious groups and parents associations are against the use of sexual material as a way to promote products.

They feel that other marketing strategies can do the trick and that in the absence of sexually explicit materials in the media less teens would not be mislead. A lot of people will agree with the fact that most materials about sex found in the media can be helpful and educating. But the question is are the teens understanding the message in these materials in the right way, is the message in the material correct, or is there any information left out?

Different sources give different views concerning sexual content in today’s entertainment industry. For example different schools have resulted in forming lessons plans to teach and introduce kids to the prevalence and the use of sexuality in the entertainment industry.

For example students are taught that in the marketing world sex and sexuality sells and also making sure that the students understand what sex is. The educators explain sex in different aspects like sex as a biological aspect, as a spiritual and also as an emotional or physical aspect (Vivian 2009).

In doing this the educator seeks to make the students understand the different aspects of sexuality, the students are also able to understand the different ways in which the media uses sexuality as a marketing strategy to sell their products and finally the students are taught about the value systems underlying the sexualized messages (Connie 2009). Other sources have different views on the sexual content in the media. Some view the media including television, magazines and movies as vital parts of sex education.

Though the media is seldom concerned with the effects of their ‘sexual lessons’, and are only concentrate on profit margins some researchers argue that they still contribute to attaining important information on sexuality and sex.

Though they do this irresponsibly, the researchers suggest that the media are important sex educators today and that the situation is not likely to change in the future. Unlike the schools and parent associations, researchers suggest that the media remains to be the best source of sexual material and that the media should be shaped to offer better and well informed messages on sexuality (Brown & Keller 2000).

Another source suggests that sex, showing nude scenes and pictures does not portray films positively to the viewers. In short, sex does not impress viewers neither does it lead to an increase in the volume of sales. This is a different way of viewing things. It does not conform to the old cliché that sex in film sells. The study shows that the most fetching movies contained very little sex scenes like Shrek 2, the lord of the rings among others.

Craig Detweiler a director of entertainment at Pepperdine University says that the audience has seen everything and nothing has been left for their imagination (Raezler 2009). Things that would have stirred big controversies like Madonna kissing Britney do not stir any kind of shock to the audience. These things have become the norm and no one is willing to pay an extra cent go an extra mile to see anything ‘normal’.

With the eruption of new technology like internet, blogs, my space, face book and other online services, the process of advertising has become easier. The advertisers can put their messages all over these provisions making it easier for a number of teens and young adults to access the messages.

It is now easier for viewers to access sexual contents and information online since mobile phones are designed to access the internet. More and more viewers are being exposed to this information regardless of their location. It has become normal and actually a fashion to access such contents. It is argued that the up surge of the new technology is not making situations any better. This is actually giving viewers a way to access such contents freely (Vivian 2009).

This essay about Justin Theroux examines his multifaceted career in Hollywood, not just as an actor but also as a screenwriter and director. It explores how his diverse roles and projects contribute to his net worth, highlighting that his earnings reflect not only his mainstream appeal but also his involvement in critically acclaimed works. The piece discusses the importance of versatility in the entertainment industry and how Theroux’s career choices demonstrate a balance between artistic integrity and financial success. By analyzing Theroux’s net worth, the essay underscores the complexities of valuing artistic work in monetary terms, emphasizing that his financial standing is a testament to his dedication, talent, and creative vision.

How it works

In the realm of Hollywood, where the dazzle of celebrity life often overshadows the artistic endeavors that underpin it, Justin Theroux stands as a multifaceted figure whose contributions span acting, screenwriting, and directing. His journey through the entertainment industry offers a fascinating lens through which to explore the confluence of talent, perseverance, and the monetary value that society attaches to artistic success. This exploration delves into Theroux’s net worth, not as a mere figure but as a testament to his career’s breadth and depth.

Justin Theroux’s career trajectory defies the one-dimensional portrayal often seen in tabloid headlines. From his early roles in off-Broadway plays to his breakthrough in film and television, Theroux has consistently showcased a range of skills that belie the notion of the actor as merely a face on the screen. His foray into screenwriting and directing, with notable successes such as “Tropic Thunder” and “Iron Man 2,” further cements his status as a creative force in Hollywood. These accomplishments, while impressive in their own right, also contribute significantly to his financial standing in the industry.

The discussion of Theroux’s net worth inevitably invites a broader conversation about the economics of the entertainment industry. In a world where blockbuster earnings and streaming deals can catapult actors into the financial stratosphere, Theroux’s earnings are reflective of a career that balances mainstream appeal with critically acclaimed projects. His involvement in the HBO series “The Leftovers,” for example, showcased his ability to navigate complex characters and narratives, earning him critical acclaim and solidifying his position as a versatile actor. These roles, while not always the most lucrative in terms of immediate financial return, contribute to a sustained and diverse revenue stream over time.

Beyond the numbers, Theroux’s net worth encapsulates the value of artistic versatility in Hollywood. In an era where typecasting and marketability often dictate career paths, Theroux’s body of work challenges the notion that actors must remain within narrowly defined boundaries to achieve financial success. His ability to traverse different genres and mediums, from indie films to blockbuster franchises, not only enriches his portfolio but also enhances his market value. This versatility, coupled with a keen sense of project selection, has allowed Theroux to build a career that is both artistically fulfilling and financially rewarding.

Finally, examining Justin Theroux’s net worth reveals the intricacies of valuing artistic work in monetary terms. While the figure itself provides a snapshot of financial success, it barely scratches the surface of the dedication, skill, and creative vision required to carve out a lasting career in the competitive landscape of Hollywood. Theroux’s journey underscores the importance of versatility, artistic integrity, and the pursuit of projects that challenge and fulfill, rather than those that simply promise a lucrative paycheck.

In conclusion, Justin Theroux’s net worth is more than a testament to his financial acumen; it is a reflection of a multifaceted career built on a foundation of diverse talents and a commitment to artistic excellence. As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the entertainment industry, Theroux’s career serves as a reminder of the enduring value of versatility and the profound impact of pursuing one’s artistic vision, irrespective of the monetary rewards.

RIP Metaverse

An obituary for the latest fad to join the tech graveyard

essay topics for entertainment industry

The Metaverse , the once-buzzy technology that promised to allow users to hang out awkwardly in a disorientating video-game-like world, has died after being abandoned by the business world. It was three years old.

The capital-M Metaverse, a descendant of the 1982 movie "Tron" and the 2003 video game "Second Life," was born in 2021 when Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg changed the name of his trillion-dollar company to Meta. After a much-heralded debut, the Metaverse became the obsession of the tech world and a quick hack to win over Wall Street investors. The hype could not save the Metaverse, however, and a lack of coherent vision for the product ultimately led to its decline. Once the tech industry turned to a new, more promising trend — generative AI — the fate of the Metaverse was sealed.

The Metaverse is now headed to the tech industry's graveyard of failed ideas. But the short life and ignominious death of the Metaverse offers a glaring indictment of the tech industry that birthed it.

Grand promise

From the moment of its delivery, Zuckerberg claimed that the Metaverse would be the future of the internet. The glitzy, spurious promotional video that accompanied Zuckerberg's name-change announcement described a future where we'd be able to interact seamlessly in virtual worlds: Users would "make eye contact" and "feel like you're right in the room together." The Metaverse offered people the chance to engage in an "immersive" experience, he claimed.

These grandiose promises heaped sky-high expectations on the Metaverse. The media swooned over the newborn concept: The Verge published a nearly 5,000-word-long interview with Zuckerberg immediately following the announcement — in which the writer called it "an expansive, immersive vision of the internet." Glowing profiles of the Metaverse seemed to set it on a laudatory path, but the actual technology failed to deliver on this promise throughout its short life. A wonky virtual-reality interview with the CBS host Gayle King , where low-quality cartoon avatars of both King and Zuckerberg awkwardly motioned to each other, was a stark contrast to the futuristic vistas shown in Meta's splashy introductory video .

The Metaverse also suffered from an acute identity crisis. A functional business proposition requires a few things to thrive and grow: a clear use case, a target audience, and the willingness of customers to adopt the product. Zuckerberg waxed poetic about the Metaverse as "a vision that spans many companies'' and "the successor to the mobile internet," but he failed to articulate the basic business problems that the Metaverse would address. The concept of virtual worlds where users interact with each other using digital avatars is an old one, going back as far as the late 1990s with massively multiplayer online role-player games, such as "Meridian 59," "Ultima Online," and "EverQuest." And while the Metaverse supposedly built on these ideas with new technology, Zuckerberg's one actual product — the VR platform Horizon Worlds, which required the use of an incredibly clunky Oculus headset — failed to suggest anything approaching a road map or a genuine vision. In spite of the Metaverse's arrested conceptual development, a pliant press published statements about the future of the technology that were somewhere between unrealistic and outright irresponsible . The CNBC host Jim Cramer nodded approvingly when Zuckerberg claimed that 1 billion people would use the Metaverse and spend hundreds of dollars there, despite the Meta CEO's inability to say what people would receive in exchange for their cash or why anyone would want to strap a clunky headset to their face to attend a low-quality, cartoon concert.

A high-flying life

The inability to define the Metaverse in any meaningful way didn't get in the way of its ascension to the top of the business world. In the months following the Meta announcement, it seemed that every company had a Metaverse product on offer, despite it not being obvious what it was or why they should.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella would say at the company's 2021 Ignite Conference that he couldn't "overstate how much of a breakthrough " the Metaverse was for his company, the industry, and the world. Roblox, an online game platform that has existed since 2004, rode the Metaverse hype wave to an initial public offering and a $41 billion valuation. Of course, the cryptocurrency industry took the ball and ran with it: The people behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT company conned the press into believing that uploading someone's digital monkey pictures into VR would be the key to "master the Metaverse." Other crypto pumpers even successfully convinced people that digital land in the Metaverse would be the next frontier of real-estate investment . Even businesses that seemed to have little to do with tech jumped on board. Walmart joined the Metaverse. Disney joined the Metaverse.

Companies' rush to get into the game led Wall Street investors, consultants, and analysts to try to one up each other's projections for the Metaverse's growth. The consulting firm Gartner claimed that 25% of people would spend at least one hour a day in the Metaverse by 2026. The Wall Street Journal said the Metaverse would change the way we work forever . The global consulting firm McKinsey predicted that the Metaverse could generate up to "$5 trillion in value," adding that around 95% of business leaders expected the Metaverse to "positively impact their industry" within five to 10 years. Not to be outdone, Citi put out a massive report that declared the Metaverse would be a $13 trillion opportunity .

A brutal downfall

In spite of all this hype, the Metaverse did not lead a healthy life. Every single business idea or rosy market projection was built on the vague promises of a single CEO. And when people were actually offered the opportunity to try it out, nobody actually used the Metaverse.

Decentraland, the most well-funded, decentralized, crypto-based Metaverse product (effectively a wonky online world you can "walk" around), only had around 38 daily active users in its "$1.3 billion ecosystem." Decentraland would dispute this number, claiming that it had 8,000 daily active users — but that's still only a fraction of the number of people playing large online games like "Fortnite." Meta's much-heralded efforts similarly struggled: By October 2022, Mashable reported that Horizon Worlds had less than 200,000 monthly active users — dramatically short of the 500,000 target Meta had set for the end of 2022. The Wall Street Journal reported that only about 9% of user-created worlds were visited by more than 50 players , and The Verge said that it was so buggy that even Meta employees eschewed it . Despite the might of a then-trillion-dollar company, Meta could not convince people to use the product it had staked its future on.

The Metaverse fell seriously ill as the economy slowed and the hype around generative AI grew. Microsoft shuttered its virtual-workspace platform AltSpaceVR in January 2023, laid off the 100 members of its "industrial metaverse team ," and made a series of cuts to its HoloLens team . Disney shuttered its Metaverse division in March, and Walmart followed suit by ending its Roblox-based Metaverse projects. The billions of dollars invested and the breathless hype around a half-baked concept led to thousands — if not tens of thousands — of people losing their jobs .

But the Metaverse was officially pulled off life support when it became clear that Zuckerberg and the company that launched the craze had moved on to greener financial pastures. Zuckerberg declared in a March update that Meta's "single largest investment is advancing AI and building it into every one of our products." Meta's chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, told CNBC in April that he, along with Mark Zuckerberg and the company's chief product officer, Chris Cox, were now spending most of their time on AI. The company has even stopped pitching the Metaverse to advertisers , despite spending more than $100 billion in research and development on its mission to be "Metaverse first." While Zuckerberg may suggest that developing games for the Quest headsets is some sort of investment, the writing is on the wall: Meta is done with the Metaverse.

Did anyone learn their lesson?

While the idea of virtual worlds or collective online experiences may live on in some form, the Capital-M Metaverse is dead. It was preceded in death by a long line of tech fads like Web3 and Google Glass. It is survived by newfangled ideas like the aforementioned generative AI and the self-driving car. Despite this long lineage of disappointment, let's be clear: The death of the Metaverse should be remembered as arguably one of the most historic failures in tech history.

I do not believe that Mark Zuckerberg ever had any real interest in "the Metaverse," because he never seemed to define it beyond a slightly tweaked Facebook with avatars and cumbersome hardware. It was the means to an increased share price, rather than any real vision for the future of human interaction. And Zuckerberg used his outsize wealth and power to get the whole of the tech industry and a good portion of the American business world into line behind this half-baked idea.

The fact that Mark Zuckerberg has clearly stepped away from the Metaverse is a damning indictment of everyone who followed him, and anyone who still considers him a visionary tech leader. It should also be the cause for some serious reflection among the venture-capital community, which recklessly followed Zuckerberg into blowing billions of dollars on a hype cycle founded on the flimsiest possible press-release language. In a just world, Mark Zuckerberg should be fired as CEO of Meta (in the real world, this is actually impossible ).

Zuckerberg misled everyone, burned tens of billions of dollars, convinced an industry of followers to submit to his quixotic obsession, and then killed it the second that another idea started to interest Wall Street. There is no reason that a man who has overseen the layoffs of tens of thousands of people should run a major company. There is no future for Meta with Mark Zuckerberg at the helm: It will stagnate, and then it will die and follow the Metaverse into the proverbial grave.

Miss USA, Miss Teen USA resignations: A reminder of beauty pageants' controversial history

essay topics for entertainment industry

The reigning Miss USA and Miss Teen USA this week said they are handing back their crowns , another reminder for pageant spectators that the tradition, with all its extravagance and glamor, has been beset by a long series of controversies.

Noelia Voigt announced on Monday that she was stepping down after having won the Miss USA title in September 2023 and participating in Miss Universe later that year. Without describing the details of what led her to resign, Voigt told her Instagram followers: “Never compromise your physical and mental well-being. Our health is our wealth.”

Two days later, UmaSofia Srivastava said she was resigning from the Miss Teen USA title as well, citing disagreement with the organization.

It’s the latest trouble in an industry that in recent years has faced harsh criticism about its effects on women and girls, a decline in viewership and participation and a troubling reputation for sexism. Meanwhile, experts say some of the biggest U.S. pageants have made strides at reform, and many participants find great benefits in their confidence and opportunities.

“It is a very mentally, physically, emotionally taxing thing” to be catapulted into the spotlight as a winner of a major pageant, said Hilary Levey Friedman, the author of “Here She Is: The Complicated Reign of the Beauty Pageant in America” and the daughter of Miss America 1970.

The rise – and fall – of pageants in the US

Beauty pageants have an inextricable link to the path of feminism in the U.S., Levey Friedman said. Miss America was started the year after women got the right to vote, and the iconic sashes worn by participants in pageants large and small come from the sashes worn by suffragettes, according to Levey Friedman, who teaches a course on beauty pageants in American society at Brown University.

In the past, pageants were a way for a woman to boost her academic and occupational opportunities in ways she couldn’t otherwise, though they were first started by men to make money off women’s bodies, she said. Fame and scholarships awaited winners in some contests; a small-town girl could make it big on the stage with a boost from a pageant win. Today, barriers to jobs and college educations have eased, and women don’t need pageants to make those moves, Levey Friedman said. But over the years, participation in pageants has fallen off.

More: How a 1968 Miss America protest propelled the women's movement into national spotlight

Viewership has also plummeted, and once widely televised competitions have gone off the air . Pageants have faced waves of criticism for seeming to hyperfocus on women’s appearances and bodies, causing some rebranding over the years, including the introduction of all women judges for competitions like Miss Universe.

Industry has shifted gears, somewhat

In 2018, then-Miss America board chairwoman and former title holder Gretchen Carlson announced the organization was axing its bathing suit judging round: “We are no longer a pageant. We are a competition,” she told Good Morning America . Focus shifted to on-stage interviews of the participants.

Miss USA is a separate competition, and still features a bathing suit round . At the local level, pageants for young girls and women across the country fall into different categories, some called “glitz pageants” that focus more on physical beauty, and others that have an emphasis on interviews and academic scholarship prizes.

Today, “there’s much more of a focus on, ‘this is for women, and not for the male gaze.’” Levey Friedman said. “On the ground, it seems less sexist, but I don't think the public narrative has changed.”

Experts say beauty pageants can also have negative impact on the mental health and body image of not just participants, but also spectators.

Brandyn Churchill, a professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, found in a study published last year that there was a link between increased media coverage of pageant winners in their home states and increased body image issues in young girls in those states between the 1990s and early 2000s.

“It’s extending a pretty strong signal about what is the ideal body type that … does contrast with what individuals are viewing when they look in the mirror,” Churchill said.

The study found that in the home states of Miss America or Miss USA winners, there was increased media coverage of the pageants, and at the same time, young women and girls were more likely to report they were trying to lose weight or have a skewed image of their own weight. Teen girls were also 5% more likely to report taking steps to try and lose or maintain their weights. The results were more pronounced in the South and Midwest, Churchill said.

Toddler girls to adult women across the U.S. participate in pageants. From a young age, participants don elaborate outfits and makeup. As they get older, hair extensions, fake nails and even dental veneers come into play, Levey Friedman said. Some girls are told they are beautiful while looking far from their natural selves.

“That sort of dissonance, I think is potentially very damaging as well,” Levey Friedman said.

Miss USA 2019 Cheslie Kryst died by suicide in 2022 and her family said she struggled with depression behind the scenes of her pageant wins.

Why pageant culture stays strong in many communities

Still, pageant participants often cite the benefits they get from participating, including increased public speaking skills, confidence and opportunities to receive academic scholarships or professional connections, Levey Friedman said.

The Miss America and Miss USA organizations didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment, but their websites both say they provide opportunities for women to empower themselves and become leaders.

“(W)e celebrate beauty, intelligence, and empowerment,” the Miss USA website says.

Leilanni Redd is a 28-year-old Californian who participated in pageants from the time she was 6 years old. She now works full time as a coach, training school-age girls on aspects of competitions including their wardrobes and pageant routines. Her students are from all over the country, and she said pageant culture is particularly strong in southern states like Alabama and in Texas.

“Growing up, I was a very shy kid,” she said. “It did give me confidence that I didn't know I could have when performing.”

Redd said she never felt some of the negative pressures on her self-esteem that the industry is known for, but she knows her experience isn’t universal. Though she said her body never looked like the other girls competing, “I never once felt uncomfortable. I never once wanted to change my appearance because I saw other people look a certain way.”

Her students may go on to compete on a national stage, but their paths are wide open and many will pursue other opportunities and treat pageantry similarly to other kids who play a sport. Still, Redd said it’s hard to see so much turmoil in the industry.

“It's a little tough right now to see that these girls are stepping down, because a lot of girls work for the title of Miss USA and Miss Teen USA,” Redd said. “To see it crumbling at the moment is a little heartbreaking, because it's like, what's the future going to look like for these girls?”
