Event Management (MS)

Program description.

The Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality offers the Master of Science in Event Management (MSEM), one of the first degrees of its kind in the country. Its cutting-edge curriculum, focused on the skills event managers need in this fast-growing, globally expanding industry, prepares students for event planning and management careers across private, public, and nonprofit organizations. This comprehensive program of study affords students the benefits and resources of earning an event management degree at NYU , while establishing themselves in New York City—home to venues such as Madison Square Garden and the Jacob Javits Center, and host to iconic events such as the U.S. Open and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The Master of Science in Event Management is a 36-credit program that includes a core curriculum, which provides the critical business skills required of event professionals, in the areas of finance and accounting, marketing, event production, risk management, and data analytics. The program also includes an internship requirement, affording students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the event sector prior to graduation. (This component can be waived if the student has a minimum of two years of relevant, full-time work experience or the equivalent in part-time work.)

The program offers elective classes in three tracks—business development, sport event management, and event operations. Students can select courses from across these tracks, allowing them to tailor the program to their own interests and professional goals. A capstone class provides students with the option to choose between a consulting practicum and an individual thesis.

Taught by faculty members who are leading industry professionals, the program is structured to meet the needs of working professionals and full-time students. Typically, students complete the degree within one-and-a-half years of full-time study or in two to three years of part-time study. Learning occurs in the classroom and in the field. Networking opportunities, lecture series, research projects, and internships provide students with valuable pathways to achieve their professional objectives—whether they are just launching their event career or have been working in the industry for years.

Those individuals with relevant work experience may be eligible to waive a core course with departmental approval. Waivers allow students to take alternative courses in their field of interest; they do not reduce the number of credits required to earn the degree.

All applicants to the School of Professional Studies (SPS) are required to submit the  general application requirements , which include:

  • Application Fee
  • College/University Transcripts
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Degree Requirements
  • Recommendations
  • Kira Talent Assessment
  • Degree-Specific Requirements
  • English Language Assessment
  • Pearson Versant English Placement Test
  • International Transcript Evaluation
  • International Student Visa Requirements

See  degree specific application requirements for instructions specific to this program.

Program Requirements

The program requires the completion of 36 credits, comprised of the following:

Students with at least 2 years of relevant full-time work experience, or the equivalent in part-time work, may qualify for a waiver. Waiving the internship requirements allows students to take an additional 1.5 credits in electives.

Students may select classes across three different tracks. Students may also take up to 6 credits in the MS in Tourism Management, MS in Hospitality Industry Studies, or related programs in consultation with their adviser.

Students are required to complete one of the capstone courses. For the Individual Thesis option, departmental approval is needed after submitting a proposal.

Business Development

Sport event management, event operations, sample plan of study, full-time plan of study, part-time plan of study, learning outcomes.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

  • Analyze the industry; and be able to articulate a nuanced evaluation of its buyers, suppliers, intermediaries, legislative environment and processes.
  • Apply the principles of strategic planning, management and decision-making to common industry processes and challenges.
  • Effectively collect and analyze data, which they will be able to use for critical, evidence based decision making when faced with industry challenges.
  • Evaluate industry principles and trends from a global perspective; by applying concepts to examples and scenarios in different geographical regions, and recognizing global best practice.
  • Apply the business skills expected of contemporary, global event professionals; including finance, sales and marketing, HRM, risk management and business development skills.
  • Articulate their thoughts effectively in a written format, by writing clearly structured and professionally prepared reports, memos, and essays.
  • Present their ideas effectively, by preparing presentations with a professional design and clear structure, and by delivering presentations confidently.
  • Analyze specific and specialized areas of the event industry, by applying concepts from their core curriculum to business development, event operations and/or sport events contexts.

PhD Defence Juliane Schillinger | Untangling the complexity of local water management during armed conflict: Comparative case studies from the Middle East

Untangling the complexity of local water management during armed conflict: Comparative case studies from the Middle East

Juliane Schillinger is a PhD studente in the Department of Governance and Technology for Sustainability. (Co)Promotors are prof.dr. M.A. Heldeweg and dr. G. Özerol from the faculty BMS.

event management phd

Following a comprehensive literature review, the dissertation presents three comparative case studies. Each investigates different facets of local water management during armed conflict, drawing from a set of twelve cases across Iraq, Palestine, Syria and Yemen.

First, a systematic mapping of direct and indirect conflict impacts on water management, utilizing the social-ecological systems framework, shows the breath of relevant dynamics and potential feedback loops. It reveals patterns of conflict-affected water management across different countries and types of conflicts, highlighting the crucial role of financial mechanisms in upholding water management throughout conflict and the importance of enforcing international humanitarian law on the protection of civilian infrastructure.

Second, the research zooms in on the topic of urban water services and infrastructure resilience during conflict. It analyzes conflict impacts and coping strategies in five Middle Eastern cities, pinpointing how communities develop decentralized alternative water supply systems that prioritize short-term resilience over long-term sustainability and can come at the cost of health risks and high water prices.

Third, an actor-based analysis investigates key water governance processes in territories under the control of non-state armed groups. It sheds light on the interplay of state and non-state actors in local water service provision, infrastructure development and policy-making, as well as on the role of international organizations as potential gatekeepers of the financial resources and technical expertise needed to effectively engage in water governance processes during armed conflict.

The results emphasize that in order to understand the complexity of water management during armed conflict, we need to look beyond the immediate, easily visible conflict impacts such as infrastructure destruction, to also consider long-lasting reverberating effects that can undermine the functionality and sustainability of a water system long after the conflict subsided. The insights won from this research can support humanitarian programming and policy-making at multiple levels and be an entry point to strengthen the humanitarian-development-peacebuilding nexus. They also have important implications for the application of international humanitarian law on the protection of civilians, civilian infrastructure and the environment, and for ongoing efforts to strengthen the climate resilience of conflict-affected communities.

From commencement to construction: Graduate student aims to make his mark in Miami

From commencement to construction: Graduate student aims to make his mark in Miami

By Madison Brinnon 05-17-2024

Daniel Cutimanco's recent graduation from the University of Miami marks not just the end of his academic journey but the beginning of a promising career in a booming industry. Having graduated from the Thomas P. Murphy Master of Construction Management program, Cutimanco is poised to blend creativity, business acumen, and practical construction knowledge in his future endeavors.

When asked what drew him to the MCM program, Cutimanco shared, "I was looking for a program that captured the essence of multiple disciplines—the creative mindset of architecture, the business perspective of project development, and the construction criteria of aligning vision with execution. The University of Miami provided this unique mix, along with a diverse study plan that allowed me to expand my vision."

One of Cutimanco's favorite academic experiences was participating in leadership seminars led by Professor Bob Reynolds. He also found profound value in Professor Brandon Moore's Project Management class, citing it as a singular experience that deepened his understanding of the profitable construction industry in South Florida. Cutimanco also benefited from a hands-on internship with the university’s Office of Design and Construction, where he collaborated on significant campus projects like the Frost Institute and the soon-to-open Centennial Village.

Beyond academics, Cutimanco was honored as the student speaker during the 2024 Graduate Commencement Ceremony. Reflecting on the experience, he said, "It was truly one of the best experiences of my life! From the weeks of preparation to the moment I stood before the crowd, every aspect was unforgettable. It was a moment to reflect on the lessons and memories from my time at UM and express my gratitude to the university, the faculty, my peers, and my parents who traveled far to share this moment with me."

Following graduation, Cutimanco will join Coastal Construction, a firm known for its innovative, sustainable, and people-first approach. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such an incredible company," he stated. "I look forward to continuing to learn and grow, aiming to make a meaningful contribution to the company's mission and legacy." This next step is further fueled by his receipt of the prestigious Thomas P. Murphy Academic Achievement Award, a testament to his hard work and dedication throughout his academic career.

The Thomas P. Murphy Master of Construction Management program offers a practice-oriented graduate degree with a blend of construction and business management courses. It is designed to develop leaders and managers for complex building projects, with mastery in best practices related to resiliency, sustainability, building information modeling, project delivery and decision-making.
