Description.

The Finds Research Group is a forum for people interested in or researching artefacts of the Anglo-Saxon, Viking, medieval and post-medieval periods.

The Finds Research Group (FRG) provides a means by which all can all communicate and discuss topics relevant to the subject of finds identification and interpretation.

The main activities of the FRG include themed day conferences and meetings, and the production of information sheets on different types of objects (The Finds Research Group Datasheets).

The aim of The Finds Research Group (FRG) is to promote the study of artefacts dating from the post-Roman period up to 1950 by:

  • holding meetings to exchange ideas;
  • viewing and identifying finds;
  • encouraging research on the material culture dating to this period;
  • disseminating that research through the publication of Datasheets;
  • supporting research through The Geoff Egan Prize for Finds Research and The Finds Research Group Fund.

Membership is open to everyone interested in finds of the period.

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

The UK’s gender investment gap has widened as more young men choose to invest while women hold on to cash due to risk aversion and a lack of confidence, according to a survey.

Investment research house Boring Money found the gender investment gap rose by £54bn to £567bn between January 2023 and January 2024. Men have £1.01tn invested versus £450bn for women. The figures include personal investments but exclude workplace pensions.

The difference has grown due to more men between the ages of 25 and 44 putting their money to work for the first time compared with women in the same age bracket, according to the study, which questioned 6,486 adults across the UK. Young women also tend to be more risk-averse and less confident about investing than their male counterparts.

“The gender investment gap remains stubbornly and frustratingly high and has got worse in 2024,” said Holly Mackay, Boring Money’s chief executive. “Shockingly, it’s higher than the gross domestic product of Poland or Argentina.”

Just 19 per cent of women aged 25 to 44 were investors in January 2024, up 1 percentage point from the previous year. Meanwhile, the proportion of British men of the same age who had invested rose from 28 per cent to 34 per cent.

The gap is even more pronounced for 18 to 24-year-olds, where 9 per cent of women invest compared with 22 per cent of men.

Bar chart of % showing More than twice as many men than women in the UK aged 18-24 invest

In Scotland and Wales, men under 44 are three times more likely to invest than women.

The average amount held by male investors is £102,000, compared with £66,000 for women. If invested amounts by gender were spread across all men in the UK, men would have on average £40,000, while women would have £16,000.

The survey also highlighted disparate attitudes to risk, with women of all ages — even those who invest — less tolerant of it than men. Only 18 per cent of women would choose a higher-risk pension in comparison with 33 per cent of men.

Men’s preference to invest in cryptocurrencies may also contribute to the gap. According to HM Revenue & Customs, 13 per cent of men own the asset compared with 6 per cent of women.

Learn how to make smarter money decisions and supercharge your personal finances in this six-part newsletter series with the FT’s Claer Barrett. From saving and investing to property and pay rises, she’ll inspire you to get more confident with your money.

This lower appetite for risk, as well as lower average wages, drives women to keep more of their assets in cash. Female investors keep 29 per cent of their assets in cash, compared with 25 per cent for male investors.

“This gender gap comes into play at an early age, even before the typical culprits of childcare and pay gaps appear,” McKay said.

“Our research has found that with this younger group, this is all about confidence, brand awareness and social norms and expectations of what an investor looks like.”

Although the interest rates that savers can earn on cash have increased since the Bank of England began to raise interest rates in December 2021, investing in shares has offered a greater return in the long term. Vanguard data shows that the average inflation-adjusted returns for shares over 120 years is above 5 per cent, compared to cash returns of 1 per cent.

Women are also more likely to get financial advice from their mothers than fathers, according to data from Hargreaves Lansdown published on Tuesday. A quarter of women say their parents have had the most influence on their attitude to money and, of those, 35 per cent said their mother had the most influence.

Only one in three said their relatives educated them about investment when they were growing up, compared with two in three who said their family taught them about personal finance, such as budgeting.

Study Finds That Children Born In September Are More Likely To Be Smarter Than Their Counterparts

A study titled " School Starting Age and Cognitive Development ", published in the National Bureau of Economic Research suggests that September-born kids are generally smarter than others [1] .

According to the study, since children born in September are usually the oldest in their year group which in turn means they have a year ahead of all the others to develop. The study was focused on estimating the effects of being relatively older in school on a child's academic performance. It compared the cognitive development of kids born in September, who are at the older end of the spectrum of kids in their year, to kids born in August, who are usually the youngest.

Across 1.2 million students between the ages of 6 and 15 in Florida, it was discovered that September-born kids tend to have a higher cumulative average score each year in school. They had twelve additional months for cognitive, social, and emotional development before they are enrolled in school.

The implication of this is that they generally act more mature than their younger classmates. They can handle school and their academic work much better, and they tend to relate more easily with others. The little ones are usually less attached to their parents and are more enthusiastic about going to school.

These advantages may give them an edge relative to their younger classmates. The study also suggests that September-born kids have higher chances of getting into good colleges, and even have lower rates of incarceration for juvenile crimes.

Leveling up to the Smart September

Other factors that may contribute to a child's progression in school include maternal influence, ethnicity, affluence, socio-economic status, and then, later on, age.

The study states that affluent families sometimes redshirt their children in a bid to put them at a higher cognitive advantage when the next school year rolls around [1] . This means to delay the enrollment of the kids into school for about a year, giving them more time to develop mentally, socially, and emotionally.

Gut Doctor Warns To Stop Eating These 4 Inflammatory Foods Immediately (and What She Eats Instead)

It is estimated that between 4% and 5.5%  of children in the United States delay entry into kindergarten [2] . The study explains that some families practice redshirting to put their child at a higher academic advantage. The extra year is intended to allow them to mature further both physically and mentally. According to the research,

" While the more affluent families tend to redshirt their children to give them a competitive advantage, families that are unable to do this – either due to lack of awareness or resources – are surrogated by the schooling system, which retains their children in grades prior to testing. This differential remediation also helps explain why we find larger kindergarten readiness gaps for lower SES [socioeconomic status]children that then vanish at the time of testing ."

Some parents may withdraw their kids from the first class in kindergarten before or after the first year ends. This is usually done when the child is found to be struggling with academic work. They may be enrolled in pre-school or special programs to develop further and acquire some knowledge before being returned to school.

Essentially, if a child is held back (retained) or is voluntarily redshirted by their parents, the outcome is the same. That delay (retained or redshirted) to kindergarten can have positive effects.

Your September-born may already be showing signs of being a Smart Alec

If you've got a September-born, perhaps the best is yet to come. According to this study (1) they may end up coming home with impressive report cards, have higher chances of getting into good colleges, and they may even be less likely to face juvenile incarceration. So is it about the month YOU are born or the month that school begins? It seems likely to be the latter.

Despite the fact that this study had a large sample size, it does not show cause and effect. There are always acceptions to the rule, sometimes many of them. If you or your children are not born in September, don't fret. If we raise them properly with sufficient attention, love, and care, they'll turn out just fine.

Medication abortions rose in year after Dobbs decision, report finds

Medication abortions rose in the year after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade , according to a report published Tuesday by the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports access to abortion.

In 2023, the first full calendar year since the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson ruling , there were about 642,700 medication abortions, accounting for about 63% of all abortions in the country, up from 492,210 medication abortions, or 53%, in 2020, according to the report.

“This increase is indicative of the fact that people are overcoming barriers to get the care they need,” said Amy Friedrich-Karnik, the director of federal policy at the Guttmacher Institute. "Abortion is health care."

New RU-486 Pill Now Available

Following the Dobbs decision, 14 states completely ban abortion , which includes medication abortion. Another handful of states require patients to see doctors in person before they can get prescriptions for the drugs needed for medication abortion or ban shipping the medication by mail.

Medication abortion became available in the U.S. in 2000 when the Food and Drug Administration approved mifepristone, one the drugs used in the regime, for use in early abortions. A second drug, misoprostol, is taken one to two days later.

Since 2020, medication abortion has been the most common method for ending early pregnancies in the U.S., according to the Guttmacher report.

It’s also once again on the judicial chopping block.

Next week, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case that could decide whether mifepristone will remain easily accessible.

The numbers in the Guttmacher report account only for people who got medication abortions through the U.S. health care system, such as through in-person visits with health care providers. People can also get the pills outside the health care system, such as through community networks or in the mail via online pharmacies.

Dr. Michael Belmonte, a fellow at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said many of his patients prefer medication abortion because it provides them with a level of privacy.

“I’m not surprised to see that medication abortion continues to play a growing role,” he said.

Even with the Supreme Court case imminent, the drugs appear to be more available. Earlier this month, CVS and Walgreens announced that they would start dispensing mifepristone .

The report also looked at abortions overall and found that there were an estimated 1,026,690 last year — either through medication or surgery — a 10% increase from 2020 and the first time since 2012 that the number of abortions surpassed 1 million.

States without complete bans on abortions recorded a 25% increase in abortions last year compared with 2020.

The sharpest increases, however, were in states that border those with complete bans, such as New Mexico, which borders Texas and Oklahoma; and Illinois, which borders Missouri and Kentucky.

Other states, like South Carolina, had huge increases in out-of-state abortions because of their proximity to states with complete abortion bans, including many states in the South. (For much of 2023, South Carolina allowed abortions up to 20 weeks. A law banning abortion after six weeks went into effect in May but was blocked just days later ; it was reinstated in August .)

Friedrich-Karnik said almost 1 in 5 people are traveling to other states to get abortion care. “All of that impacts the type of care that they’ll be able to receive,” she said.

Arthur Caplan, the head of the Division of Medical Ethics at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, said he expected the number of medication abortions would have increased last year, even without the challenge to the FDA’s approval of mifepristone. Medication abortions have been on a steady upswing since it was approved in 2000, according to the Guttmacher report.

“Nothing surprises me about this shift,” Caplan said of the Guttmacher findings. “It’s less burdensome to use a pharmaceutical agent than surgery, and it’s cheaper.”

A Supreme Court decision to restrict access to mifepristone would have huge ramifications for women, he said.

It would be “absolute utter nonsense,” he said. “Were the court to buy into it, it would clearly bring abortion by pill to an end around the country, which would lead immediately to an enormous black market.”

Dr. Kristyn Brandi, an OB-GYN in New Jersey and the former board chair for Physicians of Reproductive Health, an advocacy group for reproductive rights, said medication abortion is often the only option for marginalized communities, including people with disabilities who can’t travel. The medications will become even more common, she said, unless the Supreme Court makes them less accessible.

“That will affect the vast majority of people seeking abortion,” she said.

Belmonte said he is worried about his patients.

“Every patient should be able to choose which abortion option is right for them, without bans, restrictions or burdens,” he said.

10% of Netflix Users Are Still Borrowing Someone Else’s Password — Study

Netflix’s password-sharing crackdown is working. Well, it is and maybe it isn’t.

According to a new study of more than 2,500 U.S. households performed by Leichtman Research Group (LRG), 10 percent of Netflix users are still borrowing the service. If that feels low, it is — according to recent history, at least. In 2022, LRG found that 15 percent of Netflix users were borrowing someone else’s paid account; the rate was 14 percent in 2020 and 16 percent in 2018.

A Netflix rep did not immediately respond to IndieWire’s request for comment on LRG’s findings. Related Stories Hugh Grant Talks Fascism, Bad Sex, and Being Terrified of Kate Winslet for ‘The Regime’ David Dastmalchian Recalls Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve Asking Questions About Each Other on Set: ‘I’m a Tiny Little Thread Between Them’

No wonder Disney+ , Hulu, Max, and certainly others are or will be following suit to block outside-the-home access to their platforms. Netflix’s “paid-sharing” (it’s internal, kinder term for the sting operation) started as a trial in Latin America before migrating to Canada. By May 2023 it had been rolled out in the U.S. and more than 100 other countries. It would go global that summer.

In that April-June 2023 quarter, the streamer added 5.9 million global paid subscribers, an eight percent improvement from the same three-month period in 2023. And that was with (a little less than) half-a-quarter of meaningful paid sharing.

In its first two full quarters following the large-scale rollout, Netflix added 8.8 million global subscribers (Q3, +10.8 percent) and 13.1 million (Q4, +12.8 percent), respectively. The fourth-quarter growth was Netflix’s best ever for October-December.

Netflix’s January 23, 2024 letter to shareholders read, in part: “Our healthy top line growth reflects the benefits of paid sharing, our recent price changes and the strength of our underlying business driven by a strong slate.”

Yeah, paid sharing was number one — ads weren’t even mentioned.

finds research group

But that’s just one streaming-video service (though yes, it’s the biggest). Eighty-eight percent of U.S. households have at least one SVOD service, Leichtman found, and 53 percent have four or more DTC (direct-to-consumer) streaming video services. Most of them are appropriately used, but not all.

LRG found that 73 percent of all DTC services are fully paid for and are not shared with others outside the household. So, what about the other 27 percent?

Well, 4 percent are platforms that are freebies packaged with some other service. No theft there. Of the remaining 23 percent, 11 percent are used and paid for by those that also share them with someone outside the household, 10 percent are used in one household but are borrowed from another household that is paying for the service, and 2 percent are used by multiple households that share costs.

The younger you are, the more DTC services you likely have. Adults 18-44 average 5.1 DTC services; those 45-54 average 4 flat, and those ages 55 and older average 2.8.

Also the younger you are, the more DTC services you likely steal. Seventeen percent of the DTC services used by adults 18-34 are borrowed from someone else. For those age 35 and older, the rate is seven percent.

Ask Netflix: Streamers find 100 percent of the sharing to be 100 percent uncool.
