  உன் நண்பனைப் பற்றி சொல் உன்னைப் பற்றி நான் தெரிந்து கொள்கிறேன் என்ற பெரியோர்களின்  சொல்படி என்னை பற்றி தெரிந்துகொள்ள என் நண்பனை கண்டாலே போதுமானதாகும். ஏனென்றால் எனது நண்பனின் நல்ல பழக்கவழக்கங்கள் எனக்கும் தொட்டுக் கொண்டு விட்டது எப்போதும் நல்ல பழக்கவழக்கங்களை மேற்கொண்டுவரும் எனது நண்பன் எனக்கு ஒரு ஆசானாகவே  மாறிவிட்டான்.

 முதன்முதலாக பள்ளி வகுப்பறையிலேயே நான் அவரை சந்தித்தேன். படிப்பில் எப்போதும் முதலாவதாக வரவேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் உடைய அவனது பழக்கவழக்கங்கள் என்னை அவன் பால் ஈர்த்தது. இதன் காரணமாகவே அவனை நான் எனது நண்பனாக ஏற்றுக் கொண்டேன். அவனது தந்தை ஒரு ஆசிரியர் என்பதை அறிந்து மிகவும் சந்தோசம் கொண்டேன். ஆசிரியரின் குழந்தைகள் எப்போதும் படிப்பில் கவனமாக இருப்பார்கள் அவருடன் இணைந்தால் எனது படிப்பும் நன்றாக இருக்கும் என்ற எண்ணம் எனக்குள் உருவானது

 படிப்பு மட்டுமல்லாது நல்ல பழக்கவழக்கங்கள் அவனிடம் அதிகம் இருந்ததை எண்ணி நான் மிகவும் சந்தோசம் அடைந்தேன். மேலும் அவன் அதிகப்படியான விளையாட்டு உணர்வையும் கொண்டிருந்தான் மாணவர்கள் இணைந்தது பொழுதுபோக்கிற்காக விளையாடும் விளையாட்டுக்கள் முதல் உடல் தகுதியை மேம்படுத்தும் விளையாட்டுக்கள் வரை அனைத்தும் அவனுக்கு அத்துபடி. பள்ளிகளில் நடத்தப்படும் விளையாட்டுப் போட்டிகளில் அவன் அதிகம் பங்குபெற்று மற்ற மாணவர்களுக்கு முன்னுதாரணமாக திகழ ஆரம்பித்தான். அவன் ஒன்றிணைந்த நண்பனான நான் அவனுடன் இணைந்து சில போட்டிகளில் பங்கு பெற்று என்னைப் பற்றி நானே சரியாக தெரிந்து கொள்ளாத காலத்தில் அவனது பேச்சை கேட்டு போட்டியில் பங்கு பெற்று சிலவற்றில் வெற்றியும் பெற்றேன். இது போன்ற விளையாட்டுகளில் எனக்கு தகுதி இருக்கிறதா என்ற எண்ணம் தவறு என்று அவர் சுட்டிக் காட்டி எல்லா போட்டிகளில் பங்குபெற என்னை ஊக்கப்படுத்தினார்

 இதற்காக நான் எப்போதும் அவனிற்கு கடமைப்பட்டிருக்கிறேன் அவனது குடும்பம் ஒரு  எளிமையான குடும்பம் என்பதை நான் அறிவேன்  இருந்தபோதிலும் அவனது குடும்பத்தை பற்றி அவன் கூறும் செய்திகள் எனக்கு ஆச்சரியத்தை வழங்குகின்றன குறைந்த ஊதியம் உடைய அவனது தந்தையின் வருமானத்தில் அழகாக குடும்பம் நடத்தும் அவனது தாயை பற்றியும் நான் அறிந்து மிகவும் அச்சுறுத்தலுக்கு உள்ளானேன்

 எளிமையான உடை அணிந்து வரும் அவனைக் கண்டால் மரியாதையாக இருக்கும் எனது நண்பன் போல் அனைவருக்கும் நண்பர்கள் கிடைத்தால் அனைவரும் நல்லபடியாக தங்களது படிப்பை தொடர்வார்கள் என்ற எண்ணம் எனக்கு எப்போதும் உண்டு

My best friend is one such person who has been able to make a positive impact on my life. We have been a part of each other’s lives for the longest time and our friendship is still developing. She has been with me through all the thicks and thins. Most importantly, I feel extremely fortunate to have someone as a best friend in my life. In this essay on my best friend, I will tell you about how we became friends and about her best qualities.

Our Friendship

Our friendship started when my best friend came in as a new admission to our class. Both of us were hesitant to talk to each other at first, but gradually we developed a bond. I remember the first time my best friend tried to talk to me; I rolled my eyes because I thought there was no use and we wouldn’t hit it off. However, to my surprise, we became best friends by the end of the session year.

We learned so many things about each other and found out that our taste in music and fashion was so similar. Since then, there was no stopping us. We spent all our time together and our friendship became the talk of the class. We used to help each other out in studies and visited each other’s homes as well. We made sure to have lunch together on Sundays. We also used to watch movies and cartoons together.

On our summer break, we even went to summer camp together and made a lot of memories. Once during the summer holidays, she also accompanied me to my maternal grandparents’ home. We had a fabulous time there. Moreover, we even invented our own handshake which only both of us knew. Through this bond, I learned that family doesn’t end with blood because my best friend was no less than my family. Friendship is one relationship that you choose, unlike all other relationships.

Qualities of My Best Friend

I feel one of the main reasons why I formed such a bond with my best friend was because of the qualities she possesses. Her courage always inspired me to raise my voice against injustice as she always stood up to her bullies. She is also one of the smartest minds in class who doesn’t only excel academically but also in life. I have never seen a dancer as good as my best friend, the accolades she has won are proof of her talent.

Above all, I feel the quality that appeals to me the most is her compassion . Whether it’s towards humans or animals, she always keeps the same approach. For instance, there was an injured stray dog that was wailing in pain, my best friend did not only get him treated but she also adopted him.

Similarly, she saw a poor old woman on the streets one day and she only had money for her lunch. My best friend did not hesitate once before giving all of it to the poor lady. That incident made me respect her even more and inspired me to help the underprivileged more often.

Man is a social being and by instinct seeks companionship of others. In our journey through life we meet countless people, but with everyone we do not make friends. This is because the essential condition of friendship is affinity of mind, tastes and temperament. The few in who we discover the affinity, we make friends with and they carve out an abiding place in our hearts.

Ram is my best friend. He is my class- mate and neighbour. He has a lovable character, charming personality and enviable manners. He is son of a farmer. His mother is also a farmer and as such he has been brought up in a very healthy environment. He is the single child of his parents and hence the apple of their eye. Right from our early childhood, we played together and enjoyed each other’s company. I cannot recollect my first meeting with Ram. He is most obedient to his parents and does not like to make them angry in any case.

Ram is a gem in his studies. He is always first in our class. All the teachers are proud of his abilities as there is not a single question which he cannot answer or a single sum which he is not able to solve. He is a past master of English language. He speaks very fluently and writes a good hand. He is a top class debater and can speak on every topic with full confidence. He won many prizes in debates, competitions and quiz programmes.

Ram has one more quality worth the name. he has a high taste for music and singing. He knows by heart almost all the filmi and on- filmi songs. He does not like pop songs. Gazals are his favourite field.

Ram is not without weakness. He does not take part in any games and sports. he never visits the playground. I have never seen him with a football , cricket bat or a hockey in his hand. He says it is not his field. He goes for long walks in the mornings but is not a sportsman. His ambition in life is to become a teacher. He wants to be real teacher, a benefactor of students and a storehouse of knowledge and ability and I am sure his ambition will be fulfilled some day.

I am proud of my friend and try to follow his footsteps in every field. I wish that our friendship should last forever because it is very difficult to find a real friend.

It was during those days that I came to know about his family and the difficulties they face surviving on the meager earning of one person, that is his father, the watchman, Mr. Irfan.

When I knew that he even faced difficulties arranging to pay for his school books, I requested my father to help him by donating his books. Though, initially I a little hesitant, to my surprise, my father accepted and called Mr. Irfan for inquiring about the cost of Aftab’s books.

I felt immense joy and couldn’t wait to tell this good news to my friend. On listening this, he was also very happy and thanked my father from the bottom of his heart.

The concept of friendship goes beyond the demographic differences of caste, creed, religion, social status and financial backgrounds. It is a relationship that dwells in hearts and communicates through soul, which could be of two different persons living on two different horizons.

Joy is often the most well dressed boy in the class, wearing well cleaned and well ironed dress with well polished shoes. I don’t know when, but this wonderful dressing sense of his has impressed me and I also started caring for my uniform to be impeccably clean and tidy.

Moreover, the politeness and confidence with which, Joy conducts himself in class, with friends, with teachers etc, has a deep impression on me. Somewhere inside me, I also wanted to be the same as him, in terms of personality. Therefore, I had started copying him and it has worked in my favour only. People have started recognizing my confidence and communication skills lately, thanks to Joy.

Joy is also an excellent sportsman and looking at him playing games like table tennis, football and cricket, I also got interested in the games and started playing them. This has wonderfully improved my stamina and has made me more physically and mentally fit. For this improvement in my personality and life I will always be thankful to Joy. He is also a good listener and always patiently listens to what I have to say; though, he might be in a hurry.

My friend Joy is like a book, which teaches me so many wonderful lessons on life and personality that has literally turned my life around for good. I wouldn’t be wrong to say that joy is the real joy in my life.

My best friend is Alankrita. She had been by class mate for three years and we know each other as sisters. In fact, people who don’t know that we are friends, often think that we are sisters. Alankrita – A Friend in Need

You must have heard the proverb “A friend in need is a friend indeed”. It fits so well with regards to Alankrita, that it perfectly describes her character. There never had been a time when she had turned me down whenever I had sought her help or advice. She had always been by my side, even in the worst of situations hardly imagined. To give an example, once during a mathematics exam, I was so nervous that I forgot my math book on the desk; I was writing the examination paper.

During routine checkup, the invigilator, spotted the book and asked me to leave the class room, threatening me to bar from the examination. I was all tears; just then Alankrita stood up and told the invigilator that the book had been mistakenly left by her, when we were discussing paper together. Initially the invigilator was reluctant, but Alankrita’s persistence made him to be softened. He left both of us with warning and a little scolding.

The courage that Alankrita displayed in a situation like that to defend me could only be done by someone who really cares for you and love you. That day onwards, I started respecting her more than before.

God forbids that she should ever caught in a situation like that, but whenever she will, I will be more than obliged to help her as she had helped me. There had been a number of other incidents when Alankrita had helped me, mostly by going out of way and I will always be indebted to her for her friendship.

Friendship is something that is better experienced that explained. Unless you have a friend, who is always eager to help you and with whom you like to spend your time, you will never know what a friend is like. A good friend could play various roles in your life- a savior, motivator, care taker, protector etc. My friend is also like the best gift God has bestowed me with.

This was the beginning our friendship. Slowly our friendship grew and two years have passed since we met and today we are best friends.

Our friendship is talk of the class and everyone; even the teachers know that we are best friends. I and Ankit do almost everything together. We practice for inter-school football tournament together; we study in the library together, discussing the question papers and subjects; we eat lunch together and in recess are most likely to be found together.

My Friend’s Qualities

It would be difficult to describe the qualities of my best friend Ankit in few words; nevertheless I will try. One of the qualities of Ankit that I most admire is his honesty. He is too the core honest in our relationship or to anyone else for that matter.

Whenever he doesn’t like anything about me he straightaway let me know it. No if, no buts and no hesitation, he just says it on my face, in my best interest only. Moreover, as far as I know, he is extremely honest even to a complete stranger.

Another quality of Ankit is that he is a very good sportsman. He is an excellent football player and is the only one who ignited my own interest in the game. Before I met him, I had absolutely no interest in football or any other game and I was a kind of lethargic person. But, Ankit turned me around and made me a footballer; something for which I would always be grateful to him.

I know that finally, I and Ankit have to part our ways when we move out of school, yet one thing we both are sure of is that our friendship will continue forever. With the passage of time it’s only going to get more and more strong and beautiful.

Saying Goodbye to My Brilliant Friend, the Poetry Critic Helen Vendler

One makes so few new friends in older age — I mean, real friends, the ones you bond with and hold dear, as if you’d known one another since childhood.

Old age often prevents, or at least tempers, such discoveries. The joy of suddenly finding someone of compatible tastes, politics, intellectual interests and sense of humor can be shadowed, if tacitly, by the inevitable prospect of loss.

I became friends with Helen Vendler — the legendary poetry critic who died last week — six years ago, after she came to a talk I gave at Harvard about my 1965-66 Fulbright year in Ireland. Our friendship was close at the outset and was fortified and deepened by many letters between us, by our writing.

Some critics gain notice by something new they discover in the literature they examine. Helen became the most important critic of the age by dealing with something old and basic — the fact that great poetry was, well, lovable. Her vast knowledge of it was not like anyone else’s, and she embraced the poets she admired with informed exuberance.

The evening we met, Helen and I huddled together for an hour, maybe two, speaking of the great Celtic scholar John Kelleher, under whom we had both studied; of Irish poetry; and of our families. Helen was born to cruelly restrictive Irish Catholic parents who would not think of her going to anything but a Catholic college. When Helen rebelled against them, she was effectively tossed out and never allowed to return home.

She told me all this at our very first meeting. And I told her the sorrows of my own life — the untimely death of my daughter, Amy, and the seven-plus years my wife, Ginny, and I spent helping to rear her three children. And I told Helen unhappy things about my own upbringing. The loneliness. I think we both sensed that we had found someone we could trust with our lives.

I never asked Helen why she had come to my talk in the first place, though I had recognized her immediately. After spending a life with English and American poetry — especially the poetry of Wallace Stevens — how could I not? The alert tilt of her head, the two parenthetical lines around the mouth that always seemed on the verge of saying something meaningful and the sad-kind-wise eyes of the most significant literary figure since Edmund Wilson.

And unlike Wilson, Helen was never compelled to show off. She knew as much about American writing as Wilson, and, I believe, loved it more.

It was that, even more than the breadth and depth of her learning, that set her apart. She was a poet who didn’t write poetry, but felt it like a poet, and thus knew the art form to the core of her being. Her method of “close reading,” studying a poem intently word by word, was her way of writing it in reverse.

Weeks before Helen’s death and what would have been her 91st birthday, we exchanged letters. I had sent her an essay I’d just written on the beauty of wonder, stemming from the wonder so many people felt upon viewing the total solar eclipse earlier this month. I often sent Helen things I wrote. Some she liked less than others, and she was never shy to say so. She liked the essay on wonder, though she said she was never a wonderer herself, but a “hopeless pragmatist,” not subject to miracles, except upon two occasions. One was the birth of her son, David, whom she mentioned in letters often. She loved David deeply, and both were happy when she moved from epic Cambridge to lyrical Laguna Niguel, Calif., to be near him, as she grew infirm.

Her second miracle, coincidentally, occurred when Seamus Heaney drove her to see a solar eclipse at Tintern Abbey. There, among the Welsh ruins, Helen had an astonishing experience, one that she described to me in a way that seemed almost to evoke Wordsworth:

I had of course read descriptions of the phenomena of a total eclipse, but no words could equal the total-body/total landscape effect; the ceasing of bird song; the inexorability of the dimming to a crescent and then to a corona; the total silence; the gradual salience of the stars; the iciness of the silhouette of the towers; the looming terror of the steely eclipse of all of nature. Now that quelled utterly any purely “scientific” interest. One became pure animal, only animal, no “thought-process” being even conceivable.

One who claims not to know wonders shows herself to be one.

She was so intent on the beauty of the poets she understood so deeply, she never could see why others found her appreciations remarkable. Once, when I sent her a note complimenting her on a wonderfully original observation she’d made in a recent article, she wrote: “So kind of you to encourage me. I always feel that everything I say would be obvious to anyone who can read, so am always amazed when someone praises something.”

Only an innocent of the highest order would say such a beautiful, preposterous thing. When recently the American Academy of Arts and Letters awarded her the Gold Medal for Belle Lettres and Criticism, Helen was shocked.

“You could have floored me when I got the call,” she wrote to me, adding: “Perhaps I was chosen by the committee because of my advanced age; if so, I can’t complain. The quote that came to mind was Lowell’s ‘My head grizzled with the years’ gold garbage.’”

She was always doing that — attaching a quotation from poetry to a thought or experience of her own, as if she occupied the same room as all the great poets, living with them as closely as loved ones in a tenement.

Shelley called poets the “unacknowledged legislators of the world.” I never fully got that famous line. But if the legislators’ laws apply to feeling and conduct, I think he was onto something. If one reads poetry — ancient and modern — as deeply as Helen did, and stays with it, and lets it roll around in one’s head, the effect is transporting. You find yourself in a better realm of feeling and language. And nothing of the noisier outer world — not Donald Trump, not Taylor Swift — can get to you.

In our last exchange of letters, Helen told me about the death she was arranging for herself. I was brokenhearted to realize that I was losing someone who had given me and countless others so much thought and joy. Her last words to me were telling, though, and settled the matter as only practical, spiritual Helen could:

I feel not a whit sad at the fact of death, but massively sad at leaving friends behind, among whom you count dearly. I have always known what my true feelings are by whatever line of poetry rises unbidden to my mind on any occasion; to my genuine happiness, this time was a line from Herbert’s “Evensong,” in which God (always in Herbert, more like Jesus than Jehovah), says to the poet, “Henceforth repose; your work is done.”

She closed her letter as I closed my response. “Love and farewell.”
