A Place I Call Home

My home is situated in the city. It is not too big nor too small, just the perfect size. My family lives in the home. It comprises of my father, mother, sister and grandparents. We live in our ancestral home so my home is very vintage.

It is very old but remains to be super strong. There are six rooms in my home. Each family member has a unique room which they have decorated as per their liking. For instance, my elder sister is a big fan of music, so her walls are filled with posters of musicians like BTS, RM, and more.

Our drawing room is a large one with a high ceiling. We still use the vintage sofa set which my grandmother got as a wedding gift. Similarly, there is a vintage TV and radio which she uses till date.

Adjoining the drawing room is my bedroom. It is my favourite room because it contains everything that I love. I have a pet guinea pig which lives in a cage in my room. We also have a storeroom which is filled with things we don’t use but also cannot discard.

Our lawn in front of the house has a little garden. In that garden , my mother is growing her own kitchen garden. She is passionate about it and brings different seeds every month to grow them out and use them in our food.

The fondest memories I have in a place is my terrace. Our terrace is huge with many plants. I remember all the good times we have spent there as a family. Moreover, we play there a lot when my cousins come over. Thus, every nook and corner of my home is special to me.

Describe Your Idea Of A Perfect Home Or Dream House

Describe your idea of a perfect home or dream house You should say:

Where this place would be? What it would look like? When you would like to live there? Explain why it is ideal for you.

Sample: Describe Your Idea Of A Perfect Home Or Dream House

From the depths of my imagination, I have often visualized my dream house nestled amidst the picturesque mountains of Himachal Pradesh, India. This tranquil region, with its snow-capped peaks and verdant valleys, embodies serenity, making it a perfect location for my haven.

The house itself would be a charming blend of traditional Himachali architecture and modern design. Wooden beams, slanted roofs to ward off the snow, and large bay windows would dominate the facade. Inside, a cozy fireplace would take center stage in the living room, ensuring warmth during those cold winter nights. The interiors would be furnished in soft earthy tones, complementing the natural beauty outside. Expansive terraces would offer panoramic views of the majestic mountains and the valleys below.

Ideally, I’d love to settle in this dream house post-retirement, when the hustle and bustle of city life would have taken its toll, and the lure of a peaceful retreat would be irresistible.

This vision of a home is perfect for me because it aligns with my love for nature and my desire for a tranquil space. Living amidst the mountains, I believe, would provide not only a sensory treat but also a spiritual solace, allowing me to connect with nature, rejuvenate, and reflect on the beauty of life.

Follow-ups: Describe Your Idea Of A Perfect Home Or Dream House

Question 1: do most indian people live in an apartment or house.

Answer:- In India, the type of housing people live in largely depends on the region and socio-economic status. In urban areas like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore, due to space constraints and high population density, apartments are more common. However, in rural areas, people predominantly live in independent houses, often with courtyards and agricultural land. The growing middle class in cities is also increasingly moving towards apartment living for amenities like security and community features. So, while apartments are prevalent in cities, houses are the norm in rural settings.

Question 2: Do young people in your country like to live with their parents or by themselves?

Answer:- In India, it’s deeply rooted in the culture for young people to live with their parents until marriage, and sometimes even after. The joint family system, emphasizing close familial ties, is prevalent. While modernization and urbanization have led some young professionals to opt for independent living in metropolitan areas for job opportunities and privacy, a significant majority still prefer the comfort and support of staying with their parents.

Question 3: Do Indian people like to rent a place to live?

Answer:- In India, both renting and owning property have their place. For young professionals or those who frequently move due to job assignments, renting is often more feasible. In cities, the high real estate prices also make renting a popular choice for many. However, owning a home is a deeply ingrained cultural aspiration in India, and many work towards this long-term goal, valuing it as a symbol of stability and success.

Question 4: Would you live in a foreign country in the future?

Answer:- Certainly, living in a foreign country has always piqued my interest. I am fascinated by the idea of immersing myself in a new culture, language, and way of life. Such experiences broaden horizons and provide opportunities for personal growth. Given the chance, I would love to reside abroad for a few years, not just for professional prospects but also for the enriching life lessons it would offer.

Question 5: How is modern home design in your country different from that of the past?

Answer:- Modern home design in India markedly differs from the past. Historically, Indian homes emphasized courtyards and open spaces, facilitating communal living. Today, with urbanization and space constraints, homes have become more compact. Modern designs lean towards minimalism and functionality. Additionally, while traditional homes were built with local materials, contemporary ones incorporate global influences, blending Indian aesthetics with international trends.

196 Home Essay Topic Ideas & Examples

🌎 writing an outstanding home essay, 👍 good essay topics on home, 🎓 simple & easy home essay titles, ✅ good research topics about home, ✍️ home essay topics for college, 📝 interesting topics to write about home.

You may be required to write a home essay in school or in a variety of higher education programs, particularly those in social sciences.

You may be required to describe your hometown and how it affected your childhood and adolescence. Alternately, the essay may cover your dream house and what you would like to see in it.

Such essays generally appreciate originality and cleverness, and you should make them interesting and engaging. However, you should not go overboard with additions and expressions, as some of them may be excessive or unnecessary.

This article will help you understand what you should and should not do when writing a home essay of either variety. When discussing the topic of your hometown, you should consider a variety of aspects, as this sort of essay is not solely about yourself.

Your family biography would be a good choice among various home essay topics to provide background to your childhood and describe your upbringing.

Prominent memories would also be helpful, as your perception of your childhood tends to be the primary focus of this variety of essay. As such, you should not discuss factors that you learned about later on unless they are directly relevant to the story.

You should also try to avoid letting such knowledge twist what you remember of the circumstances. You may note that you later learned that the reality was different from what you remember as a child, but you should always mention the latter.

When discussing your ideas of a perfect house, you will want to cover a variety of aspects. The physical parameters, such as location, size, design, color scheme, and many other options you have to consider when furnishing your home are important topics.

However, the essay will want you to provide a more complete picture, including your idea of your future family and other inhabitants.

Examples of what you can use include what pets you would like to have, possibly with details such as breed and gender, and other home essay titles.

However, you should generally not reveal too many private details and be non-specific about your family. The essay is primarily about yourself, and the family should be described in basic details such as the number of children.

Here are some additional tips for your writing process:

  • When you are writing an essay about your home in school, you will usually want to concentrate on its current state. Discuss your family and possibly contemplate how your neighborhood changed throughout your upbringing.
  • Try to avoid overly concentrating on any one aspect of your dream house at the expense of others. The purpose of the essay is to create a comprehensive picture of your ideal. As such, you want to talk about many different things that will come to your head.
  • The essay is personal and not scholarly, and so you do not have to write in a formal academic style. You are free to separate it by topics and use section titles if you wish, provided the paper is long enough. However, you should still avoid colloquialisms and other non-literary language.
  • Many people will have similar ideas of their ideal living conditions, ones close to the overall societal norm. It is not necessary for everyone to introduce outlandish ideas just to be different from the rest, as the small differences are more important.

Envisioning the perfect home is a deeply personal exercise, one that reflects our desires, aspirations, and life experiences. In the IELTS speaking cue card segment, candidates are often asked to describe their idea of a perfect home, a topic that invites a blend of imaginative thinking and articulate expression. Crafting a description for such a space is not just about stating preferences; it's an exploration of one's identity and values.

My idea of a perfect home transcends the physical structure to become a sanctuary of comfort, creativity, and memories. It would be a quaint cottage nestled in the countryside, surrounded by lush greenery and a tapestry of flowers that color every season with their bloom. The exterior, with its ivy-clad walls and rustic charm, would speak of timelessness and warmth.

Upon crossing the threshold, one would step into a world that balances modern elegance with vintage grace. An open floor plan would combine the living room, dining area, and kitchen, fostering a sense of togetherness. Natural light would flood in through skylights and large windows, creating an airy and inviting atmosphere. The living area, with a cozy fireplace, would be the heart of the home, where stories and laughter would resonate during family gatherings.

Each room would mirror a chapter of life, adorned with souvenirs from travels and pictures of loved ones. The bedrooms would be havens of tranquility, with soft hues and luxurious linens, ensuring restful slumber. My study, lined with bookshelves and featuring a bay window overlooking the garden, would be my retreat for reflection and creativity.

Technology would seamlessly integrate into the home, offering both convenience and sustainability. Energy-efficient appliances, smart climate control, and a home automation system would provide comfort while minimizing the ecological footprint.

The perfect home, however, is incomplete without the sound of children playing in the backyard, the aroma of meals being prepared with love, and the presence of family and friends. It's not just about the aesthetics; it's about the life that unfolds within its walls.

Q1: How does the design of your perfect home reflect your personality?

A1: The blend of countryside charm with modern amenities mirrors my appreciation for tradition and my embrace of innovation. The presence of a study reflects my introspective nature and love for learning, while the open communal space signifies my belief in togetherness and shared experiences.

Q2: What role does technology play in your perfect home?

A2: Technology in my ideal home is a silent enhancer of life's quality and sustainability. It brings convenience and efficiency, allowing more time for family and creative pursuits, and underscores my commitment to living in harmony with the environment.

Q3: Why is the location in the countryside important to you?

A3: The countryside represents a peaceful escape from the urban frenzy. It's a place where one can reconnect with nature, indulge in gardening, and experience the simple joys of life, resonating with my desire for a serene and grounded lifestyle.

Tips 1: Engage with vivid storytelling. Your description should transport the examiner into your world, allowing them to visualize your perfect home.

Tips 2: Use a diverse vocabulary. Avoid repeating words and phrases, and instead, employ synonyms and descriptive terms that paint a detailed picture.

Tips 3: Focus on fluency and coherence. Practice speaking without hesitation and use connectors to link your ideas naturally.

Tips 4: Personalize your answer. Share unique details about why certain features of your perfect home are important to you.

Tips 5: Mind your pronunciation and pace. Speak clearly and at a natural speed to ensure the examiner understands you without difficulty.

Tips 6: Be prepared for follow-up questions. Examiners often probe deeper based on your initial response, so think broadly about the subject.

Tips 7: Stay calm and composed. If you feel stuck, take a brief pause to collect your thoughts instead of panicking.

My House Essay

It would be fantastic to live in my perfect home with my parents and sisters. In my view, a home ought to include all the facilities, including practical bathrooms, kitchens, and spacious rooms. I always dream of a home that makes me feel content, safe, and a part of something. Here are a few sample essays on "my house".

My House Essay

100 Words Essay On My House

My wonderful home is on the outskirts of the city. Our house is situated on a spacious lot with lots of room for gardens and picturesque surroundings. There are three bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, and a living room in my house. On top of a tall compound wall that completely encloses the area, we grow decorative creepers. Our home feels spacious and has lots of natural light thanks to the huge windows in each of our living spaces. Every morning when we eat breakfast, we are treated to a lovely view of the lawn and flowers in the backyard. A variety of materials, including bricks, cement, tiles, marble, and wood, were used to build the house. My house is the most amazing place in the world, and my friends love coming over.

200 Words Essay On My House

Description of my house.

My house was built close to where my neighbourhood is. My family and I had been living in a government-provided flat during my father's time in the military. However, my parents decided amicably to relocate to our town and stay there only for the duration of the service term. Our home was already in my village. We have five bedrooms, a kitchen, and a spacious veranda. There is also a little cottage for us. It is the ideal spot to reside in the summer. In metropolitan settings, the size of the building is more significant than the homes. The fields close to my house are a wonderful shade of green. It made us more aware of how lovely our home was.

Spaces Outside My House

There is a lot of open space in front of our house because my house was built on a pitch. My father built modest animal shelters for cows and dogs in this area and used them for gardening. For the same, some construction work was also done. We set up food and water for the local wildlife and birds. Together with my family, these activities turned my home into the cutest place to live. One of my favourite parts of the entire house is this location.

500 Words Essay On My House Essay

I reside in a beautiful home part of a colony in a tiny town adjacent to the city. Our home was just built recently, and we just moved in. Four rooms total two stories, including a living room, kitchen, dining room, terrace, and basement. Within the compound, we have enough room to create a garden. Our garden has a wide variety of vegetables and blooming plants planted.

My room offers a large balcony on the first level with a panoramic view. It also allows me to set up my telescope and see the night sky comfortably. We have a sizable kitchen with a door leading to the backyard garden. My parents enjoy their tea on the lawn every evening in the kitchen garden.

Our terrace is my favourite feature of my home. The top of our home has a sizable open area that is tastefully furnished for relaxing. On the balcony, there is a big swing that I enjoy using to spend my evenings reading my favourite books. Occasionally, I will invite my friends to play catch on the terrace. The open terrace is stunning to look at at night. I can see the moon and all the stars when the sky is clear. I prefer to lie down and count the stars on such clear evenings.

Our home is situated in a lovely and warm neighbourhood. My father often gets fruits and veggies from a small market nearby. We have excellent neighbours as well. They are generous and compassionate people who are always willing to lend a hand. I adore my brand-new home and all of its exquisite amenities. I prefer to spend time at home somewhere else.

My Dream House

We currently reside in a little house; thus, my future dream is to own my own home. To live with my parents, sisters, and me in my ideal home would be fantastic. A house should have all the amenities, such as functional bathrooms, kitchens, and spacious rooms. Instead of a large mansion, I always dream of a place that makes me feel happy, secure, and a part of something.

Space and Ventilation: There would be enough space throughout my home and sufficient ventilation. This will also contribute to making the house feel alive and airy.

Garden Space: In my home, there would be room for gardening because plants assist in purifying the air and look nice.

Balcony: My room would have a patio that led out to the exterior, giving me a view of the outside of my home. My ideal home would have a nice front view of a playground or a park.

Living Room: My home will have vibrant rooms thanks to the employment of various colour tones. I wish to have a reading area constructed in my house.

The ideal place to provide us with security, love, and affection is at home. We feel the most at ease and liberated there. I adore my home and the lovely family members who make it their own.

Finding furniture to remember a parent, growing up without a fixed address, and more

Every week, Curbed publishes Personal Space, a column of first-person essays about how our homes define us and reflect our relationships. Below, we present 10 of our favorites from 2019, all with original illustrations by Natalie Nelson.

I bought a house—and then moved into a van

By britany robinson.

A psychic in upstate New York once told me I’d meet the love of my life on the road. That’s not why I moved into my campervan just two years after buying my first home. But I can’t say I didn’t consider the romantic possibilities of life in motion. I was broke and bored, terrified of settling for the wrong place or person, and looking in all directions for an alternative.

The roommates who taught me to love being alive

By jessica gross.

I moved into the small upstairs room, for which I paid $1,000. (It was 2009.) Valerie lived there the previous year and had painted the whole thing baby blue, except for one wall of thick black-and-white stripes. I would never do something so bold—to date, I’ve kept the walls in all other apartments white—but when she moved to one of the bigger bedrooms and I took over the balcony, I kept the paint. I hoped something of it would enter me through osmosis, and transform me. And it did, though of course it wasn’t the paint. The decor only expressed what seemed obvious from a moment spent in Valerie and Elena’s company: They loved being alive.

Finding the perfect furniture to remember my dad

By amy plitt.

When he was alive, Dad and I spoke almost every day; he was always overprotective, and when I moved away for college his calls just to check in became a part of my nightly routine. Those calls (and, eventually, emails) continued long after I graduated. We were incredibly close, and without him, I felt unmoored.

So I obsessed over this task, believing that if I found just the right piece of furniture—something that Dad himself might have picked out—it might lessen my grief and keep him with me. I didn’t have my dad anymore, but I had his stuff, and that was something.

When DIY becomes D(on’t)IY

By tove danovich.

My husband and I bought our first house three years ago and I’ve checked most of those items off my wish list. We’ve repainted almost every room of our 2,400-square-foot home. I stenciled the walls of the guest room and dining room by hand—at least 24 hours of work. I repainted the gazebo and then reroofed it with some help from my in-laws. And I did feel accomplished. I felt proud. The home that I’d seen in my head when we made the offer was a little closer to reality.

But my head pounded from paint fumes (the windows of our 1930s house had been nailed shut so the previous owners didn’t have to deal with changing out the storm windows) and my back felt immovable as a board from hours sanding or holding a paint roller over my head. I started to wonder whether that homeowner’s pride was because it was done or because I’d done it myself.

I grew up without a fixed address

By bobbi dempsey.

I grew up poor, living in an estimated 70 places before I graduated high school. For many of these pit stops, there’s no proof I was ever there. For me, and others like me, impoverished and lacking stability, entire chunks of my childhood don’t officially exist. My family lived in a sort of “constant temporary” state. We moved almost nonstop. Often, this was because we couldn’t afford rent. But sometimes it was also for our safety: For a long portion of my childhood, when my mother was trying to leave my father or after my parents’ divorce when I was 8, my mother and siblings and I were trying to stay under the radar so we couldn’t be found by my often violent father, who had routinely violated orders of protection.

Housesitting made me want a life I thought I didn’t need

By logan scherer.

I was writing a dissertation about 19th-century spinsters and widows who opted out of normative life, becoming hermits, and I wanted to bring what I saw as their ascetic queerness to my own life. I wanted to be simple, with as few desires as possible, to reject the amenities I associated with heterosexual domestic life. My apartment was spare—a faux-suede green recliner, a mattress, a TV, a little table built into the kitchen, nothing on the walls—and I loved it. My cozy, minimalist hideout gave me the thrill of self-possession, control over expressing my identity.

The dark side of living in a unique historic home

by Giulia Pines

Our tiny, quaint apartment, with its faded pastel wallpaper and paint-spattered double windows, held few remnants of this sad past. It was in one of the old guards’ houses left standing around the prison’s perimeter. But in a 21st-century Berlin still obsessed with the parts of its history hiding in plain sight, it had all the markings of a great find: a facade riddled with World War II bullet holes, a private garden cultivated with lilac trees and strawberry plants, and an address that didn’t make sense to Google Maps, right near the main train station.

It was historic, it was romantic, and it was also really, really annoying.

Why I declutter my home via Craigslist

By lauren rothman.

My Gmail history tells me that since 2014, I’ve posted 73 times, giving away everything from a lavender-scented terrycloth eye pillow (I never used it) to a French language workbook (I completed most of it) to a half-empty bottle of Tresemme hair conditioner (it didn’t work for my poofy, frizz-prone curls). At least in New York, where the cost of living is sky-high and inhabitants are constantly looking for creative ways to budget-trim, it’s possible to get rid of just about anything.

Learning to make my bed and lie in it

By briallen hopper.

A few years ago I got tired of feeling the slats underneath me through the thin foam, but I wasn’t earning enough money to buy anything better. I loved my low-paid teaching job, but I was always worried about losing it. I was scared to be in my late 30s and still unable to afford rent without roommates. When I inherited another thin mattress from a roommate who moved out, I stacked it on top of the first one like the princess and the pea. I felt simultaneously more comfortable and more precarious: The mattress on top would slip and slide in the night. I would dream about falling and wake up clinging to the edge.

My new home came with chickens

By sarah anne lloyd.

When I pictured my early days of homeownership, I thought I’d be digging up lawns, putting together makeshift planting systems, and setting myself up for a growing garden the next year, maybe eventually upgrading to small livestock. Instead, overnight, I became the caretaker for an overgrown vegetable garden, a packed greenhouse, and six chatty, social chickens—coop and all.

How to Write the Perfect Essay

06 Feb, 2024 | Blog Articles , English Language Articles , Get the Edge , Humanities Articles , Writing Articles

Student sitting at a desk writing in a notebook

You can keep adding to this plan, crossing bits out and linking the different bubbles when you spot connections between them. Even though you won’t have time to make a detailed plan under exam conditions, it can be helpful to draft a brief one, including a few key words, so that you don’t panic and go off topic when writing your essay.

If you don’t like the mind map format, there are plenty of others to choose from: you could make a table, a flowchart, or simply a list of bullet points.

Discover More

Thanks for signing up, step 2: have a clear structure.

Think about this while you’re planning: your essay is like an argument or a speech. It needs to have a logical structure, with all your points coming together to answer the question.

Start with the basics! It’s best to choose a few major points which will become your main paragraphs. Three main paragraphs is a good number for an exam essay, since you’ll be under time pressure.

If you agree with the question overall, it can be helpful to organise your points in the following pattern:

  • YES (agreement with the question)
  • AND (another YES point)
  • BUT (disagreement or complication)

If you disagree with the question overall, try:

  • AND (another BUT point)

For example, you could structure the Of Mice and Men sample question, “To what extent is Curley’s wife portrayed as a victim in Of Mice and Men ?”, as follows:

  • YES (descriptions of her appearance)
  • AND (other people’s attitudes towards her)
  • BUT (her position as the only woman on the ranch gives her power as she uses her femininity to her advantage)

If you wanted to write a longer essay, you could include additional paragraphs under the YES/AND categories, perhaps discussing the ways in which Curley’s wife reveals her vulnerability and insecurities, and shares her dreams with the other characters. Alternatively, you could also lengthen your essay by including another BUT paragraph about her cruel and manipulative streak.

Of course, this is not necessarily the only right way to answer this essay question – as long as you back up your points with evidence from the text, you can take any standpoint that makes sense.

Step 3: Back up your points with well-analysed quotations

You wouldn’t write a scientific report without including evidence to support your findings, so why should it be any different with an essay? Even though you aren’t strictly required to substantiate every single point you make with a quotation, there’s no harm in trying.

A close reading of your quotations can enrich your appreciation of the question and will be sure to impress examiners. When selecting the best quotations to use in your essay, keep an eye out for specific literary techniques. For example, you could highlight Curley’s wife’s use of a rhetorical question when she says, a”n’ what am I doin’? Standin’ here talking to a bunch of bindle stiffs.” This might look like:

The rhetorical question “an’ what am I doin’?” signifies that Curley’s wife is very insecure; she seems to be questioning her own life choices. Moreover, she does not expect anyone to respond to her question, highlighting her loneliness and isolation on the ranch.

Other literary techniques to look out for include:

  • Tricolon – a group of three words or phrases placed close together for emphasis
  • Tautology – using different words that mean the same thing: e.g. “frightening” and “terrifying”
  • Parallelism – ABAB structure, often signifying movement from one concept to another
  • Chiasmus – ABBA structure, drawing attention to a phrase
  • Polysyndeton – many conjunctions in a sentence
  • Asyndeton – lack of conjunctions, which can speed up the pace of a sentence
  • Polyptoton – using the same word in different forms for emphasis: e.g. “done” and “doing”
  • Alliteration – repetition of the same sound, including assonance (similar vowel sounds), plosive alliteration (“b”, “d” and “p” sounds) and sibilance (“s” sounds)
  • Anaphora – repetition of words, often used to emphasise a particular point

Don’t worry if you can’t locate all of these literary devices in the work you’re analysing. You can also discuss more obvious techniques, like metaphor, simile and onomatopoeia. It’s not a problem if you can’t remember all the long names; it’s far more important to be able to confidently explain the effects of each technique and highlight its relevance to the question.

Person reading a book outside

Step 4: Be creative and original throughout

Anyone can write an essay using the tips above, but the thing that really makes it “perfect” is your own unique take on the topic. If you’ve noticed something intriguing or unusual in your reading, point it out – if you find it interesting, chances are the examiner will too!

Creative writing and essay writing are more closely linked than you might imagine. Keep the idea that you’re writing a speech or argument in mind, and you’re guaranteed to grab your reader’s attention.

It’s important to set out your line of argument in your introduction, introducing your main points and the general direction your essay will take, but don’t forget to keep something back for the conclusion, too. Yes, you need to summarise your main points, but if you’re just repeating the things you said in your introduction, the body of the essay is rendered pointless.

Think of your conclusion as the climax of your speech, the bit everything else has been leading up to, rather than the boring plenary at the end of the interesting stuff.

To return to Of Mice and Men once more, here’s an example of the ideal difference between an introduction and a conclusion:

Introduction

In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men , Curley’s wife is portrayed as an ambiguous character. She could be viewed either as a cruel, seductive temptress or a lonely woman who is a victim of her society’s attitudes. Though she does seem to wield a form of sexual power, it is clear that Curley’s wife is largely a victim. This interpretation is supported by Steinbeck’s description of her appearance, other people’s attitudes, her dreams, and her evident loneliness and insecurity.
Overall, it is clear that Curley’s wife is a victim and is portrayed as such throughout the novel in the descriptions of her appearance, her dreams, other people’s judgemental attitudes, and her loneliness and insecurities. However, a character who was a victim and nothing else would be one-dimensional and Curley’s wife is not. Although she suffers in many ways, she is shown to assert herself through the manipulation of her femininity – a small rebellion against the victimisation she experiences.

Both refer back consistently to the question and summarise the essay’s main points. However, the conclusion adds something new which has been established in the main body of the essay and complicates the simple summary which is found in the introduction.

What is an essay?

Generally speaking, an essay designates a literary work in which the author defends a point of view or a personal conviction, using logical arguments and literary devices in order to inform and convince the reader.

So – although essays can be broadly split into four categories: argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive – an essay can simply be described as a focused piece of writing designed to inform or persuade. 🤔

The purpose of an essay is to present a coherent argument in response to a stimulus or question and to persuade the reader that your position is credible, believable and reasonable. 👌

So, a ‘good’ essay relies on a confident writing style – it’s clear, well-substantiated, focussed, explanatory and descriptive . The structure follows a logical progression and above all, the body of the essay clearly correlates to the tile – answering the question where one has been posed.

But, how do you go about making sure that you tick all these boxes and keep within a specified word count? Read on for the answer as well as an example essay structure to follow and a handy step-by-step guide to writing the perfect essay – hooray. 🙌

Sometimes, it is helpful to think about your essay like it is a well-balanced argument or a speech – it needs to have a logical structure, with all your points coming together to answer the question in a coherent manner. ⚖️

Of course, essays can vary significantly in length but besides that, they all follow a fairly strict pattern or structure made up of three sections. Lean into this predictability because it will keep you on track and help you make your point clearly. Let’s take a look at the typical essay structure:

#1 Introduction

Start your introduction with the central claim of your essay. Let the reader know exactly what you intend to say with this essay. Communicate what you’re going to argue, and in what order. The final part of your introduction should also say what conclusions you’re going to draw – it sounds counter-intuitive but it’s not – more on that below. 1️⃣

Make your point, evidence it and explain it. This part of the essay – generally made up of three or more paragraphs depending on the length of your essay – is where you present your argument. The first sentence of each paragraph – much like an introduction to an essay – should summarise what your paragraph intends to explain in more detail. 2️⃣

#3 Conclusion

This is where you affirm your argument – remind the reader what you just proved in your essay and how you did it. This section will sound quite similar to your introduction but – having written the essay – you’ll be summarising rather than setting out your stall. 3️⃣

No essay is the same but your approach to writing them can be. As well as some best practice tips, we have gathered our favourite advice from expert essay-writers and compiled the following 7-step guide to writing a good essay every time. 👍

#1 Make sure you understand the question

#2 complete background reading.

#3 Make a detailed plan

#4 Write your opening sentences

#5 flesh out your essay in a rough draft, #6 evidence your opinion, #7 final proofread and edit.

Now that you have familiarised yourself with the 7 steps standing between you and the perfect essay, let’s take a closer look at each of those stages so that you can get on with crafting your written arguments with confidence .

This is the most crucial stage in essay writing – r ead the essay prompt carefully and understand the question. Highlight the keywords – like ‘compare,’ ‘contrast’ ‘discuss,’ ‘explain’ or ‘evaluate’ – and let it sink in before your mind starts racing . There is nothing worse than writing 500 words before realising you have entirely missed the brief . 🧐

Unless you are writing under exam conditions , you will most likely have been working towards this essay for some time, by doing thorough background reading. Re-read relevant chapters and sections, highlight pertinent material and maybe even stray outside the designated reading list, this shows genuine interest and extended knowledge. 📚

#3 Make a detailed plan

Following the handy structure we shared with you above, now is the time to create the ‘skeleton structure’ or essay plan. Working from your essay title, plot out what you want your paragraphs to cover and how that information is going to flow. You don’t need to start writing any full sentences yet but it might be useful to think about the various quotes you plan to use to substantiate each section. 📝

Having mapped out the overall trajectory of your essay, you can start to drill down into the detail. First, write the opening sentence for each of the paragraphs in the body section of your essay. Remember – each paragraph is like a mini-essay – the opening sentence should summarise what the paragraph will then go on to explain in more detail. 🖊️

Next, it's time to write the bulk of your words and flesh out your arguments. Follow the ‘point, evidence, explain’ method. The opening sentences – already written – should introduce your ‘points’, so now you need to ‘evidence’ them with corroborating research and ‘explain’ how the evidence you’ve presented proves the point you’re trying to make. ✍️

With a rough draft in front of you, you can take a moment to read what you have written so far. Are there any sections that require further substantiation? Have you managed to include the most relevant material you originally highlighted in your background reading? Now is the time to make sure you have evidenced all your opinions and claims with the strongest quotes, citations and material. 📗

This is your final chance to re-read your essay and go over it with a fine-toothed comb before pressing ‘submit’. We highly recommend leaving a day or two between finishing your essay and the final proofread if possible – you’ll be amazed at the difference this makes, allowing you to return with a fresh pair of eyes and a more discerning judgment. 🤓

How to Write an Essay Introduction | 4 Steps & Examples

Published on February 4, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on July 23, 2023.

A good introduction paragraph is an essential part of any academic essay . It sets up your argument and tells the reader what to expect.

The main goals of an introduction are to:

  • Catch your reader’s attention.
  • Give background on your topic.
  • Present your thesis statement —the central point of your essay.

This introduction example is taken from our interactive essay example on the history of Braille.

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability. The writing system of raised dots used by visually impaired people was developed by Louis Braille in nineteenth-century France. In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Step 1: hook your reader, step 2: give background information, step 3: present your thesis statement, step 4: map your essay’s structure, step 5: check and revise, more examples of essay introductions, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about the essay introduction.

Your first sentence sets the tone for the whole essay, so spend some time on writing an effective hook.

Avoid long, dense sentences—start with something clear, concise and catchy that will spark your reader’s curiosity.

The hook should lead the reader into your essay, giving a sense of the topic you’re writing about and why it’s interesting. Avoid overly broad claims or plain statements of fact.

Examples: Writing a good hook

Take a look at these examples of weak hooks and learn how to improve them.

  • Braille was an extremely important invention.
  • The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability.

The first sentence is a dry fact; the second sentence is more interesting, making a bold claim about exactly  why the topic is important.

  • The internet is defined as “a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities.”
  • The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education.

Avoid using a dictionary definition as your hook, especially if it’s an obvious term that everyone knows. The improved example here is still broad, but it gives us a much clearer sense of what the essay will be about.

  • Mary Shelley’s  Frankenstein is a famous book from the nineteenth century.
  • Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is often read as a crude cautionary tale about the dangers of scientific advancement.

Instead of just stating a fact that the reader already knows, the improved hook here tells us about the mainstream interpretation of the book, implying that this essay will offer a different interpretation.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

Next, give your reader the context they need to understand your topic and argument. Depending on the subject of your essay, this might include:

  • Historical, geographical, or social context
  • An outline of the debate you’re addressing
  • A summary of relevant theories or research about the topic
  • Definitions of key terms

The information here should be broad but clearly focused and relevant to your argument. Don’t give too much detail—you can mention points that you will return to later, but save your evidence and interpretation for the main body of the essay.

How much space you need for background depends on your topic and the scope of your essay. In our Braille example, we take a few sentences to introduce the topic and sketch the social context that the essay will address:

Now it’s time to narrow your focus and show exactly what you want to say about the topic. This is your thesis statement —a sentence or two that sums up your overall argument.

This is the most important part of your introduction. A  good thesis isn’t just a statement of fact, but a claim that requires evidence and explanation.

The goal is to clearly convey your own position in a debate or your central point about a topic.

Particularly in longer essays, it’s helpful to end the introduction by signposting what will be covered in each part. Keep it concise and give your reader a clear sense of the direction your argument will take.

  • Vague sentences

As you research and write, your argument might change focus or direction as you learn more.

For this reason, it’s often a good idea to wait until later in the writing process before you write the introduction paragraph—it can even be the very last thing you write.

When you’ve finished writing the essay body and conclusion , you should return to the introduction and check that it matches the content of the essay.

It’s especially important to make sure your thesis statement accurately represents what you do in the essay. If your argument has gone in a different direction than planned, tweak your thesis statement to match what you actually say.

To polish your writing, you can use something like a paraphrasing tool .

You can use the checklist below to make sure your introduction does everything it’s supposed to.

Checklist: Essay introduction

My first sentence is engaging and relevant.

I have introduced the topic with necessary background information.

I have defined any important terms.

My thesis statement clearly presents my main point or argument.

Everything in the introduction is relevant to the main body of the essay.

You have a strong introduction - now make sure the rest of your essay is just as good.

  • Argumentative
  • Literary analysis

This introduction to an argumentative essay sets up the debate about the internet and education, and then clearly states the position the essay will argue for.

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts is on the rise, and its role in learning is hotly debated. For many teachers who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its critical benefits for students and educators—as a uniquely comprehensive and accessible information source; a means of exposure to and engagement with different perspectives; and a highly flexible learning environment.

This introduction to a short expository essay leads into the topic (the invention of the printing press) and states the main point the essay will explain (the effect of this invention on European society).

In many ways, the invention of the printing press marked the end of the Middle Ages. The medieval period in Europe is often remembered as a time of intellectual and political stagnation. Prior to the Renaissance, the average person had very limited access to books and was unlikely to be literate. The invention of the printing press in the 15th century allowed for much less restricted circulation of information in Europe, paving the way for the Reformation.

This introduction to a literary analysis essay , about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein , starts by describing a simplistic popular view of the story, and then states how the author will give a more complex analysis of the text’s literary devices.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is often read as a crude cautionary tale. Arguably the first science fiction novel, its plot can be read as a warning about the dangers of scientific advancement unrestrained by ethical considerations. In this reading, and in popular culture representations of the character as a “mad scientist”, Victor Frankenstein represents the callous, arrogant ambition of modern science. However, far from providing a stable image of the character, Shelley uses shifting narrative perspectives to gradually transform our impression of Frankenstein, portraying him in an increasingly negative light as the novel goes on. While he initially appears to be a naive but sympathetic idealist, after the creature’s narrative Frankenstein begins to resemble—even in his own telling—the thoughtlessly cruel figure the creature represents him as.

Your essay introduction should include three main things, in this order:

  • An opening hook to catch the reader’s attention.
  • Relevant background information that the reader needs to know.
  • A thesis statement that presents your main point or argument.

The length of each part depends on the length and complexity of your essay .

The “hook” is the first sentence of your essay introduction . It should lead the reader into your essay, giving a sense of why it’s interesting.

To write a good hook, avoid overly broad statements or long, dense sentences. Try to start with something clear, concise and catchy that will spark your reader’s curiosity.

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

The thesis statement is essential in any academic essay or research paper for two main reasons:

  • It gives your writing direction and focus.
  • It gives the reader a concise summary of your main point.

Without a clear thesis statement, an essay can end up rambling and unfocused, leaving your reader unsure of exactly what you want to say.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

(Educational Institution) In our current society, we are trained by entertainment to thirst for comfort in exotic and expensive places. Our dreams are supposed to be riddled with fantasies of eclectic castles or white sand beaches. Clearly, that programming skipped right over me. One place that always makes me completely content is home. I know it may seem like a very simple answer, however, it suits me best. Though it may come off as very boring, understand that being content requires a significant amount of comfort. What place is more comfortable than home? All of the memories that have been made there are automatic therapy. The smell of my home as I walk through the front door is one-of-a-kind. That scent automatically eases me. When I go home, love will always live there. It is a place where amity never dies. I will always be welcomed there with open arms. No matter what calamity is occurring in the world, home is always my place of peace. It is a sanctuary of familiarity. I will be able to see the faces of those that care about me. For that fact alone, being at home is invaluable. At home, I can just sit in the backyard and feel perfectly satisfied. Home is definitely my ground zero, the place where I can always find happiness. To some, a fancy getaway, adorned with gorgeous scenery and exotic animals is probably an ideal place. But for me, I love being at a place that allows me to be myself. I am only required to be exactly who I am, and I will always be accepted just like that. I know where everything is located and I do not need to call on any stranger to help me. It may not be a lavish mansion from a magazine, but it has always been exactly what I needed. I never want to find myself sacrificing comfort for luxury. Glitz and glamour is not everything. I do not need money to enjoy home. Everything is free. I can just sit around, laugh, and have the best time ever. When all of my family is there, we reminisce on the good times and always seek to make new ones. A simple nap in a place of comfort is also one of the simple pleasures in life. I do not have to worry about some weird person popping up in my room and watching me sleep. I know it sounds odd, but thoughts like that bother me when I am not at home. I experience such serenity there. That is the place that will always keep me safe from the cruel world. The love that I experience there is my strength and solace. I am also completely familiar with the places around my home. I do not have to worry about ending up lost. I know the ins and outs of my area. That makes me able to move around on my own and not be nervous about ending up in an unsafe place. Surely I can’t control each and every thing that occurs around my neighborhood, but I do know that I can navigate around safely and end up where I want to be. In the shops and businesses in my neighborhood, everyone knows me. I feel safer that way because the people around me are then able to be my eyes and ears when I am out and about. That is extremely important. Safety can make all of the difference when it comes to being comfortable and content. This fact is probably debatable, but for me, it is very high on the priority list. All in all, as the saying goes, “home is where the heart is”. This rings too true with me. I will always be happy when I am at home, and around the people that love me completely. The best things in life do not have a price tag. The beautiful faces that have spackled every good memory to date, are all at home. I enjoy vacations and gorgeous destinations as much as the next person; but I will always just love being at home. When it comes to comfort and contentment, my home has no formidable rival.
