With GATE Scores, Candidates Can Apply For PhD Fellowships At IITs, IISc

IIT Bombay announced the result of GATE 2021 on March 19

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has announced the result of the Graduate Aptitude Test For Engineering ( GATE 2021 ) at its official website, gate.iitb.ac.in, on March 19. A total of 1,26,813 candidates have qualified the test this year. The exam is held primarily for admission to MTech programmes and selection for PSU jobs, but direct entry to PhD with the Prime Minister's Research Fellowships (PMRF) in top engineering colleges is also via the GATE.

Institutes offering PMRF include all Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, all Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) and a section of the other centrally-funded technical institutions. In May 2020, Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' had announced significant amendments in the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) scheme. Two channels of entry to the PhD and fellowship programme were created -- direct and lateral. One requires the candidate to have qualified GATE, the other doesn't.

The eligibility criteria for the two paths into PhD with PMRF at the IITs, IISc, IISERs and other CFTIs are given below.

With GATE 2021: Direct Entry

To apply for PMRF through direct entry channel, a candidate must meet the criteria relevant for their group to be eligible:

The candidate should have completed or be in the final year of a Bachelors or Masters degree programme in science and technology at recognised institute or university in India with CGPA of 8 or above and should have attained a GATE score of 650 or above in the relevant subject in the previous three years. GATE 2021 was conducted in 27 subjects.

However, if the candidate obtained their degree from a CFTI, a GATE score is not necessary.

The candidate should have qualified GATE and completed or be pursuing MTech or MS by research at one of the PMRF-granting institutes and must have a minimum CGPA of 8 or above at the end of the first semester with a minimum of four courses.

Without GATE 2021: Lateral Entry

In the lateral entry path, students who are pursuing PhD in PMRF-granting institutions can also apply to become a fellow under the scheme. However, they need to have spent 12 months or 24 months -- depending on whether they joined with a Bachelor's or Master's degree -- in the PhD programme before becoming eligible.

Reduced GATE Score

For students from any recognised institute or university other than IISc, IITs, NITs, IISERs, IIEST, IIITs and CFTIs, the requirement of GATE score is reduced to 650 from 750 apart from a minimum CGPA of 8 or equivalent.

The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) among the top 25 institutions as per NIRF ranking will also be eligible to grant the fellowship.

Minimum Qualifications for admission to Full-time PhD Programmes

Table 1 defines the minimum qualifications required for admission to full-time Ph. D. programmes at IIT Delhi. Please note:

These are Institute minimum requirements and any Department/Centre/School operating through their DRC/CRC/SRC can specify higher short-listing criteria than what is specified here.

This table includes most of the degrees, but each DRC/CRC/SRC is free to specify the qualifications and disciplines acceptable for admission to their programmes.

Candidates in the final year of their programmes and who expect to complete all their qualifying degree requirements before the date of registration are also eligible to apply for admissions. For short-listing purposes, their performance until the preceding semester (preceding year if their programmes are year based) would be considered but their admission would be provisional, subject to their meeting the minimum eligibility criteria after their final qualifying examination results are announced. In any case, all admissions are provisional at first and it is confirmed only after all certificates and previous records are duly checked and verified, a process which may take a few weeks into the starting semester.

Table 1: Minimum Qualification for Admission to full-time PhD Programmes

Exemptions, relaxations and clarifications:.

For SC/ST/PwD category candidates , the minimum performance in the qualifying degree (S. No. 1 & 2 in Table 1) is relaxed from 60% to 55% (CGPA relaxed from 6.00 to 5.50).

For SC/ST/PwD category candidates , the minimum performance in the qualifying degree (Sr. No.3 in Table 1) is relaxed from 70% to 65% (CGPA relaxed from 7.00 to 6.50).

Qualifying degree performance is computed by aggregating performance over all the semesters/years of the qualifying degree, as per the credit or weightage system approved in the institution/ board where the degree has been completed.

Requirement of qualification in GATE / National Exam is waived for the following categories of applicants:

Currently registered students in Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) pursuing B.Tech./B.E./ Integrated M. Tech/ Integrated M.Sc. Programmes (or any other programme of minimum four year duration, admission to which is on the basis of JEE), who have completed 6 semesters or more, and have CGPA of 8.00 or above (on a 10 point scale). For purposes of shortlisting, the primary method of evaluation (i.e., CGPA/CPI, or aggregate percentage, whichever is appropriate) followed by the institution where candidate has obtained his/her qualifying degree will be used by IIT Delhi for determining whether the candidate meets the final shortlisting requirements.

For assistantship purposes only (and not for qualification), candidates with M.B.B.S. qualification will be considered equivalent to M. Tech., for admission to Ph.D. programme in Centre for Biomedical Engineering;

For candidates with M.A. degree in English, a 5% relaxation in marks or 0.5 relaxation in CGPA may be permitted for admission to the Ph.D. programme in Humanities and Social Sciences;

OPPORTUNITIES AFTER GATE For a Mechanical Engineering Students

The biggest question that one must ask himself before the preparation of any exam is that why one should appear for the exam as that reason itself is the motivation for the exam. GATE is conducted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and it tests the basic understanding of undergraduate subjects. GATE is jointly conducted by seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute for Science, Bangalore (IISc, Bangalore). These institutes are responsible for the administrative responsibilities of the exam and not directly concerned with preparing the question paper. This exam is one the most prestigious exam in India and not only because it is conducted by IITs but also because of the plethora of opportunities available after GATE.

The Opportunities Available After GATE

Postgraduate (M.Tech) Entrance :-   The GATE score is considered a mandatory requirement for admission to post-graduate programmes in different IITs and National Institutes of Technology (NITs). The process for recruitment for M.Tech programs involves qualifying for the GATE exam and clearing the cut-off for the respective college and then undergoing an interview stage for final admission.

Different benefits of the M.Tech program are:

Better job opportunities

Higher pay packages

Subject specialization

Handsome stipend

GATE scorecard is valid for M.Tech admission for three years.

Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) Entrance :-   GATE exam gained much popularity after various public-sector units (PSUs) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with IITs for recruitment through GATE. So, clearing GATE can also help you get direct government sector jobs.

The most lucrative aspects of PSU jobs are:

High pay packages (above Rs 50,000 per month)

Work-life balance

Extra benefits such as oil or electricity at a subsidized rate

Support for higher education such as MBA

The recruitment procedure for PSU is a valid GATE score of the current year and then a round of Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). The weightage given to GATE score is between 75 percent to 85 percent. Different PSUs that recruit through GATE include PGCIL, NTPC, NHPC, IOCL, BHEL, etc.

In a recent interaction with some students, Shiksha.com found that PSU recruitment is one of the most important reasons why students appear in GATE. As stated by the students, the majority of the students aim to get shortlisted for the recruitment done by different PSUs. However, if they got selected for M. Tech, they take admissions to the programme and start preparing for the GATE to be conducted next year. The only motive behind it is to get selected for the PSUs.

Why there is so much stress on getting selected for the PSUs? The major reasons behind doing a job in PSU contain a very good salary, job stability, benefits other than salary, and good social stature. In addition to that, candidates also focus on various exams conducted by different PSUs other than GATE. This exam includes the other PSU recruitment exams also like ISRO, DRDO, BARC, etc. with GATE

Fellowship Program in Management (FPM)

It is a five-year program run at IIMs. This program has the following features:

A monthly stipend of Rs 29,000-30,000 is offered

No tuition fees for four years and nine months

For students who live off-campus will get a house-rent allowance (HRA) of Rs 8,000 for a single student and Rs 13,000 for married students

Post Graduate Diploma in Management

National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) offers various courses in PGDM such as:

Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering (PGDIE)

Post Graduate Diploma in Manufacturing Management (PGDMM)

Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management (PGDPM)

For all the above Programs, the applicant should have valid GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score as on June 15, with 60 percent aggregate marks (relax able by five per cent in case of SC/ST/PD (Physically Disabled) candidates) at graduation in Engineering/Technology.

MS Program :-   If you wish to go for higher studies abroad then you need not worry about exams  such as GRE and TOEFL. There are some universities which consider GATE score for admission of Indian Students such as National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

GATE score must be within three years or less from the date of application and the GATE percentile must be above 90.

State Electricity Boards :-   Earlier different state electricity boards used to conduct independent exams but nowadays many of them are collaborating with IITs to recruit through GATE. Some of the state boards that recruit through GATE are West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDC), Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) and Odisha Power Generation Corporation Limited (OPGEN).

For recruitment, you have to apply with your GATE registration number on their respective websites.

Research Opportunities

There are certain research positions available through GATE in Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC). However, BARC conducts its examination for recruitment. Also, industries like ISRO conduct their exams on a similar pattern as GATE.

So, I guess now you must have gotten a basic idea of opportunities after GATE and as the name suggests this exam is a doorway or gate to multiple career options. Hence, I wish all the best to those who wish to prepare for GATE.

Can i give GATE exam after admission in PhD? If yes, will I get GATE scholarship also?

Dear student,

Yes, it is possible to take the GATE exam even after being admitted to a PhD program (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). You can take the GATE exam while earning your PhD if you want to increase your score or use it for future applications because GATE results are valid for three years.

However, the specific policies of the institution and the funding agency would determine whether you can still receive a GATE scholarship for your PhD program after retaking the exam.

Here are some things to think about:

GATE Score: Three years after the exam year, your GATE score is still valid. As a result, even if you are accepted into a PhD program, you are still able to retake the GATE exam in an effort to raise your score.

GATE Scholarship: Candidates who receive a high GATE score and enroll in M.Tech programs or comparable postgraduate programs at universities that are a part of the scholarship program are typically granted GATE scholarships. Scholarships have nothing to do with getting a PhD.

Scholarships and support for PhD programs are frequently made available through a variety of methods. While GATE scores may raise your chances of getting a PhD, the scholarship application process for PhD candidates may differ and depend on things like your research plan, academic standing, and the availability of research grants.

Institutional Policies: This may be distinct from the GATE scholarship program, however certain universities may provide PhD candidates with additional financial aid or fellowships based on their performance.

Contact the Institution: It is preferable to get in touch with the organization where you were admitted if you are looking for financial assistance or scholarships for your PhD program. They can give you precise details on the funding possibilities available to PhD candidates.

External Scholarships: A wide range of external fellowships and scholarships are also offered to PhD candidates by various financing organizations, both governmental and non-governmental. You could get more money for your studies by looking into and applying for these options.

Keep in mind that regulations can differ from institution to university and from funding agency to funding agency. I advise getting in touch with your institution's PhD program office or academic affairs office if you're considering obtaining a PhD and need financial assistance to learn more about the scholarships and funding options available to PhD students.
