Students pursue their passion for social justice through enhanced leadership, and the transformative opportunity to explore and develop themselves as scholars and practitioners. Kutztown University and Millersville University have partnered to offer their DSW program focused on preparing leaders and educators for career advancement in agencies, government, and higher education. Social Work practitioners with an MSW will be prepared to take on the challenges the industry will face in practice and in preparing future experts in the field. A hybrid program with a residency component at the Pennsylvania campuses, the DSW program is designed with the working professional in mind.

Whether students live in south-central or southeastern Pennsylvania or anywhere beyond, they learn with the best in their profession and prepare to continue to make a difference. The DSW is an applied degree. Research topics are directly related to the needs of the practice community and an optional field work or praxis experience is part of the program. Students complete the program in 3 years. The praxis is an optional, elective field work opportunity for students to work in an academic or agency setting of the student’s choice. Students complete an approved project that is needed in the setting. Hours in the setting are not counted; rather the project and reflections related to it provide assessment measures. Each semester begins with an intensive weekend residency, which is an opportunity to meet faculty and classmates, to learn about program expectations, to gain assistance in meeting personal expectations and to begin studies with a face-to-face classroom experience for each of that semester’s classes.

Doctor of Social Work online

The online Doctor of Social Work (DSW) program at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work offers an advanced practice doctor in social change and innovation for agency and community leaders and entrepreneurs.

The program prepares experienced professionals with the skills to develop practical, applied solutions to large-scale social challenges that directly impact vulnerable, marginalized or otherwise disadvantaged populations.

As a student in our online Doctor of Social Work program, you will develop characteristics of both practitioners and scholars. By adopting the disciplinary habits of scholars through rigorous inquiry and use of methodological tools associated with leading and managing innovation and change, you will become an effective social change leader.

Program Overview

As a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) student, you will complete 42 units of coursework focused on three areas:

• Problem definition within the 12 Grand Challenges for Social Work
• Innovative design
• Executive leadership in human service organizations and community contexts

The DSW degree may be completed along a Standard or Accelerated track.

The Standard Track (42 units):

• Complete in 9 semesters.
• Register for 2 courses (6 units) over 6 semesters.
• Enroll in the Capstone Project for the last 3 semesters.

The Accelerated Track (42 units):

• Complete in 7 semesters.
• Register for 3 courses (9 units) over 4 semesters.

The curriculum includes Design Laboratory for Social Innovation I and II, where you will incorporate models from your courses to address one or more of the 12 Grand Challenges in Social Work, as defined by the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare.

As a student, you will complete a capstone project that demonstrates your abilities and results in a prototype — such as a business plan, large contract proposal, prototype or organizational redesign plan — that is ready for public communication and implementation. This project will require you to demonstrate and apply social innovation in the context of the diverse knowledge and skills you have acquired throughout the program.

Similar to a dissertation, the capstone provides you with a guided opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding that you have acquired throughout your course of study. You are expected to identify a problem of importance connected to the Grand Challenges and develop an innovative proposal for an immediately actionable social change effort in that challenge area.

The University of Georgia PhD Program in Social Work provides the professional social worker the opportunity to gain advanced training in scientific research and program evaluation skills, for the purposes of developing knowledge that promotes social justice. The mission of the PhD Program draws upon two important areas of concern to the profession of social work: evidence-based knowledge about human behavior and social problems, and the applications of such knowledge through practice. Recognizing that MSW education is designed to prepare practitioners for our field, the emphasis of the PhD Program is upon the development and dissemination of evidence-based knowledge to undergird effective practice throughout the profession.

The Ph.D. Program at the UGA School of Social Work began in 1990 and has produced over 90 graduates, most of whom have gone on to assume academic, research or administrative positions. The program prepares social work professionals for careers in academic research settings and for practice in program evaluation and other forms of scientific research in the public and private sectors. The overall goals are to help students acquire the research skills necessary to develop original research studies that have direct applications to social work practice. In addition, we emphasize learning about teaching so that our graduates are able to provide quality instruction to the next generation of social work students.

Curriculum:

The Ph.D. curriculum is a series of required research courses, two research practica, other courses in the School of Social Work, three courses in statistics and advised cognates taken outside the School. Ph.D. students also sign up for course hours that match the following events: Comprehensive Examinations, Prospectus Defense, and Dissertation Defense. While there has been great variance in the length of time needed to finish the program, future full-time students should plan to complete the Ph.D. Program in 3-4 years. We also offer a part-time option that uses individual advisement to plan the student’s program of study.

Social work

We conduct applied research into social work and social care services, including professional identities, service user involvement in social work education and practice, the provision of social work education through distance learning, mental health, learning disabilities, digital literacies and social work history.

Our research is recognised for its innovative approach and academic rigour, with many of our academics internationally renowned as subject experts. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), our submission under the unit of assessment for Social Work and Social Policy was judged world-leading or internationally excellent, a testament to both the world-class research by colleagues and the impact of our research on practice. We contribute to policy debates and developments through the Social Work History Network and NIHR (SSCR).

‘Behind the Blue’: UK grad finds passion for global social work through Explore First

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 3, 2024) —  Cierra Couch, a representative of the University of Kentucky May Class of 2024, is a first-generation college student who came to UK in 2020 with a strong sense of determination, but without a clear roadmap.

As a Robinson Scholar from Hyden, Kentucky, Couch instantly found community through like-minded peers who were also from Eastern Kentucky. As time went on, she began to curate her college journey through resources like UK’s Stuckert Career Center, Student Support Services and her first-generation advisor. These services helped Couch first learn about the multitude of opportunities in the field of social work.

But it was later in her academic journey when Couch stepped into a UK student involvement fair, where, by chance, she learned about Alternative Spring Breaks (ASB), a program that connects UK students to service and learning opportunities across the U.S. and around the world. After becoming involved in ASB, Couch discovered a passion for social work and working with immigrant and refugee populations.

But perhaps Couch’s most transformative experience happened through  Explore First  —  an education abroad program designed and implemented intentionally to equip and empower first-generation students at UK, like Couch. She was part of the inaugural cohort of students to take part in this trailblazing program, which launched in the summer of 2023. Students traveled to London and Dublin for a three-week course, which emphasized career readiness within a global context. Couch says this experience helped her solidify her career goal to work in global social work.
