About the PhD in Epidemiology Program

The doctoral program in Epidemiology is anchored in public health and population research and analysis. Students approach research using epidemiologic methods to understand complex human health problems. The PhD requires two years of coursework followed by two (or more) years of research. Students are required to complete a teaching training curriculum and serve as a teaching assistant for methods and topical courses. Additionally, students must complete a written comprehensive exam, a practice oral exam, a preliminary exam, multiple oral and poster presentations, and a final dissertation including presentation and defense.

Research Tracks

The Department's current research tracks in the PhD program include:

Cancer Epidemiology offers a rich, vibrant and dynamic environment for masters and doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows to actively participate, learn, explore and conduct cancer-related population-based and clinical research. The track has a long and successful history of training masters and doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. Past students continue to conduct population-based cancer research and have made successful transitions to positions in academia, government and private sector organizations.

Cardiovascular and Clinical Epidemiology focuses on the use of epidemiologic methods in clinical research and practice as well as interdisciplinary training on the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease. The program integrates knowledge on all aspects of the disease: biology, behavior, treatment, and prevention. Training emphasizes active participation in research and translational epidemiology using a collaborative approach, which is enhanced by the close relationships between the Department of Epidemiology and clinical departments of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Clinical Trials and Evidence Synthesis offers students a unique educational experience in clinical trial and evidence synthesis methodology. Methods are applied to a variety of clinical areas including respiratory-, eye- and infectious diseases, and mental health. Student-faculty discussions, journal clubs, research-in-progress meetings, seminars and active participation in research add to both the depth and breadth of the program.

Environmental Epidemiology concentrates on the impact of environmental exposures on health and disease states in human populations. This track integrates epidemiological methods, assessment of environmental exposures and understanding of specific disease processes to identify the health consequences of environmental exposures. Environmental Epidemiology provides basic information for risk assessment, risk communication, and environmental health policy decisions and has a central role in identifying, implementing and evaluating strategies for the prevention and control of environmental exposures. Training in Environmental Epidemiology emphasizes active participation in large population research projects, with close collaborations across the School and with national and international collaborators.

Epidemiology of Aging focuses on the determinants of physical and cognitive health, disease, and function in older adults. Offers multidisciplinary training in methods and theories needed for the study of older populations. Strong ties exist with several multi-departmental training grants and programs. This training program also is connected to numerous large research projects.

General Epidemiology and Methodology offers research and training opportunities in almost all areas of chronic disease epidemiology, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diseases of childhood and includes advanced methodology training in epidemiologic methods as well as providing individualized or customized training in statistical epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology and social epidemiology.

Genetic Epidemiology focuses on the study of genetic and environmental factors, and their interaction in disease and normal variation. Emphasis is on understanding the methodology and approach to designing, executing and analyzing genetic studies. Training is broad-based and collaborative and encourages participation in research from faculty in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Institute of Genetic Medicine, and the School of Medicine.

Infectious Disease Epidemiology provides training in the fundamentals of infectious disease epidemiology with an eye toward preparing graduates to work in teaching, research and practice. The program emphasizes principles and methods that can be used to understand the dynamics and control of transmissible diseases by all classes of organisms. The curriculum builds on the faculty's extensive and diverse experience researching and combating infectious diseases, ranging from hospital acquired infections, to neglected tropical diseases and sexually transmitted infections.

College-level math through pre-calculus, a biology course, and one additional science course

Not required, but highly recommended

Prior Work Experience

One year of full-time work experience in a related field

Standardized Test Scores

Standardized test scores are  not required and not reviewed  for this program. If you have taken a standardized test such as the GRE, GMAT, or MCAT and want to submit your scores, please note that they will not be used as a metric during the application review.  Applications will be reviewed holistically based on all required application components.

All full-time PhD students will receive the following support for the first four years of the program: full tuition, individual health insurance, University Health Services clinic fee, vision insurance, and dental insurance.

Need-Based Relocation Grants Students who  are admitted to PhD programs at JHU   starting in Fall 2023 or beyond can apply to receive a $1500 need-based grant to offset the costs of relocating to be able to attend JHU.   These grants provide funding to a portion of incoming students who, without this money, may otherwise not be able to afford to relocate to JHU for their PhD program. This is not a merit-based grant. PhD in Epidemiology

The PhD in epidemiology is offered through Emory’s Laney Graduate School . This program trains students to become independent investigators and to obtain skills to be successful in PhD-level positions in academia, government, and the private sector.

What You Will Learn and Do

The Doctoral Program in Epidemiology at Emory University trains students in the methods of epidemiology and the application of these methods to a broad scope of public health and medical problems. Areas of study include, but are not limited to, cancer, cardiovascular disease, maternal and child health, diet/nutrition and physical activity, epidemiologic methods, infectious diseases (including HIV/AIDS), genetics and molecular epidemiology, social epidemiology, and health disparities.   The goal of the program is to graduate epidemiologists with the knowledge, skills, and philosophy to be influential lead researchers (principal investigators), teachers of epidemiology, and public health officials.

Graduates of the department have gone on to find work at settings such as: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pharmaceutical companies (such as Humana, Amgen), nonprofit organizations (such as The Task Force for Global Health and American Cancer Society), and colleges and universities.

Our Faculty

Students learn from our department's faculty, as well as faculty from the Hubert Department of Global Health, the Department of Environmental Health, and the Emory School of Medicine. Students' dissertation committees often include faculty from organizations outside of the School and University, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Cancer Society.

  • Statement of purpose: In 500 words or fewer, please tell us about your previous research experiences or training leading you to apply to this program. Please share your research interests, how this program addresses your interests, and your long-term goals after earning a doctoral degree.
  • Unofficial transcripts from each post-secondary institution you have attended.
  • For international students: TOEFL scores are required.
  • For applicants with post-secondary degrees from a non-US institution, a course-by-course credit evaluation is strongly recommended. We accept credential evaluations from Educational Credential Evaluators, Educational Perspectives, and World Education Services. Admission Tips

The Department receives more than 200 applications a year for ten to fourteen spaces. Admitted students most often have:

  • An advanced degree in epidemiology or a related field
  • A clear, concise statement of purpose
  • Defined research interests
  • Outstanding recommendations from faculty and supervisors
  • Some professional/research experience
  • Strong GRE scores

International Applicants

In addition to these requirements, all departments require international students to submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores.

TOEFL scores should be at least 100 or higher on the Internet-based test. International applicants who earned an undergraduate or two year graduate degree from an institution within the United States are waived from the TOEFL requirement.  If an international applicant is currently completing a two year degree in the United States at the time of application, the TOEFL does not need to be submitted.  For example, if an international student is currently pursuing a two year MPH that will be completed prior to matriculation in the PhD program, the TOEFL is not required.

A World Education Service ( WES ) course-by- course report is STRONGLY recommended of all students who have received a baccalaureate and/or advanced degree from a non-US institution. This does not include students who completed a semester study abroad as part of a US degree.  This process takes weeks to complete and applicants are encouraged to start this process very early.

After the Department of Epidemiology reviews applications, a portion of applicants will be invited for an virtual visit day. It is very unlikely that an applicant not invited to visit would receive an offer of admission. Visit day is most often Friday within the first two weeks of February.  

Admitted students are later invited to an on-campus Admitted Student's Day hosted in Atlanta, GA in March.

All admitted PhD students receive merit-based support packages consisting of full tuition scholarships each year. The first two years students are typically funded from institutional support from Laney Graduate School or Training Grants (pending satisfactory progress in the program). In years three through five, students in good standing are funded through mentor grants, training grants, pre-doctoral training fellowships, etc. The stipends are set at the NIH pre-doctoral training level.  As of 2023-2024, doctoral students receive annual stipends of $36,376. 

Training grants currently support some EPI PhD students with the following interests and research areas:  1) Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology, 2) Molecules to Mankind (M2M), and 3) Health Disparities in Cardiovascular Disease . Laney Graduate School also offers Professional Development Funding and Training (to attend conferences and for research).

Degree Requirements

Through required coursework, students receive a strong foundation in epidemiological methods and biostatistics and become proficient on how, when, and why to use specific tools or methods. All students are required to select six hours of EPI electives to gain content knowledge and experience in applying epidemiologic methods within a particular area. All PhD students must participate in the Teaching Assistant Training and Teaching Opportunities (TATTO) program. Students receive an orientation to effective teaching and a course on teaching techniques in the field and gain experience working as supervised teaching assistants and/or classroom instructors or co-instructors.  More about TATTO

Research Assistantships

All EPI PhD students participate in two at least two, 200-hour research assistantships during their time enrolled during the program (usually during the first two years). Research Assistantships may include (but are not limited to) literature review, survey design, primary data collection, data management and analysis, and manuscript development. 

Dissertation

All PhD students are required to complete and defend a dissertation. Students are encouraged to begin exploring potential research topics as soon as they enter the program by meeting with faculty . 

The doctoral dissertation must meet the requirements of both the department and Laney Graduate School. In particular, the dissertation must make a new contribution to the student’s field of study, or present a unique new interpretation on existing knowledge. Students are required to pass an oral defense of the dissertation proposal.

Jones Program in Ethics

Students receive training in ethics in research both through the Department of Epidemiology and the Laney Graduate School.  Within the required Epidemiology PhD coursework, students may gain exposure to topics such as ethics in human subject research, data management, and scientific writing.  The Laney Graduate School sponsors numerous seminars and workshops on scholarly integrity.

Student Life

All EPI PhD students participate in a weekly doctoral seminar during lunchtime in the fall and spring semesters.  This provides an opportunity not only to review and critique current literature but also to foster camaraderie among students and faculty. In addition, PhD student representatives organize social activities for students on a monthly basis.

PhD in Public Health Sciences

The Brown School’s PhD program in Public Health Sciences prepares students to think critically as public health scientists, succeed as independent investigators, and understand and address public health challenges for the nation and the world. It provides hands-on research experiences and mentoring from day one in the program; a curriculum that builds methodological and analytical skills, and deep knowledge of the field’s theoretical and conceptual underpinnings, philosophy and history; and professional acculturation and network building. Graduates transition to leadership roles in academia, policy research, and public health settings to make a difference locally, nationally, and globally.

Doctoral students complete innovative coursework in public health foundations, statistical analysis, an array of research methodologies, and substantive offerings in their individualized areas of interest. Students also engage in mentored research and teaching experiences.

Students develop individualized areas of study through mentored training opportunities with our highly collaborative faculty working at the intersections of artificial intelligence, child and maternal health, chronic disease prevention, community-based research, dissemination and implementation science, environmental science, epidemiology and biostatistics, global health equity, health disparities, health policy, mental health, nutrition, urban design, systems science, violence and injury prevention, etc.

The PhD curriculum includes three units of required research and teaching practica. These practica typically occur after the first semester in our program and round out the individualized curriculum plan. Research practica provide opportunities to engage in different aspects of the research process and increase a student’s capacity for completing independent research. Teaching practica ensure students are well-trained in substantive content and pedagogy as they prepare for independent teaching at the graduate level. Additional opportunities for research development are available within specific research fellowship programs, faculty laboratories and research centers .

We are dedicated to providing our doctoral students full-tuition scholarships, four-year stipends, and professional development accounts. Base stipends for students are five years at $35,000 in the program, and additional funding is possible through paid research, teaching fellowships, and other internal and external support sources.

Our doctoral program provides the nation and the world with some of the profession’s best scholars, teachers and researchers, and as such, is highly competitive. We review all applications holistically, assessing an individual’s overall preparation for rigorous doctoral study.

Applicants to the PhD in Public Health Sciences must have a master’s degree in public health or related discipline. Applications are accepted through  SOPHAS – the centralized application service for public health . The application deadline is  December 1 .

PhD in Health Policy and Management

The doctoral program in Health Policy and Management (HPM) is designed to develop scholars that are able to apply theoretical frameworks from the social sciences (such as economics, political science, organizational theory and management, sociology) to address pressing health policy and management research questions. The program is purposefully interdisciplinary and seeks to prepare students for research careers in academics as well as in public and private sector agencies and organizations. Students complete courses in a broad set of health policy and management areas, biostatistics and econometrics, and a selected area of depth (i.e., economic theory and application, political and policy analysis, and organizational theory and management). Students in the department of HPM take qualifying examinations in:

  • health policy and management
  • quantitative methods
  • their chosen area of depth.

In addition, students work directly with a specific faculty member on an individualized readings course on which they will also take a qualifying examination. The program typically requires 4-5 years to complete, including 2 years of coursework followed by 2-3 years to complete and defend the doctoral dissertation. Individuals applying to this program usually have a master’s degree and/or relevant research experience, however the minimum requirement is a bachelor’s degree.

This program requires General GRE test scores. Please send them to institution code 3987 (there is no department code).

Program Overview

The maternal and child health doctoral program provides interdisciplinary training in research, theory, policy and practice relevant to health and well-being as well as services for women, children, and their families. Graduate students learn about health disparities, the life course perspective, mental health, obesity, childhood injury, family and health policy, adoption, domestic and child abuse, family support, epidemiology, and research methods.  Students graduate with the skills and knowledge for professional work in educational, governmental, and clinical settings.

Upon graduating with a PhD in Maternal and Child Health, students will be able to:

  • Describe the independent and interdependent determinants of health, disease, and disparities; including individual, familial, social, cultural, racial/ethnic, medical and environmental factors.
  • Design a study to test hypotheses on an MCH issue. Review literature, select appropriate design, data, methodology and methods, analyze data, draw appropriate conclusions, and summarize findings for publication.
  • Identify, analyze, and evaluate U.S. health care policy, program, and data surveillance systems.
  • Synthesize and translate MCH knowledge into understandable information to advance health literacy.
  • Formulate advocacy strategies to implement MCH policy while balancing interests of diverse stakeholders.

The MCH Ph.D. curriculum requires 57 graduate credit hours beyond the master’s degree public health core (15 credits), including maternal and child health core courses (20 credits), research methods courses (16 credits), electives (6 credits), research internship (3 credits), and dissertation credits (12 credits). Please consult with your advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies as individual study plans may differ. Students in the Ph.D. program advance to candidacy after completing required coursework and passing a written qualifying examination. After advancement to candidacy, students must complete a dissertation proposal and oral defense, followed by the doctoral dissertation and oral dissertation defense.

PhD in Public Health

The curriculum is organized into four modules: The preparatory, methods, and concentration modules stimulate students to generate research hypotheses in the context of risk factors, vulnerable populations, and disease outcomes. Finally, the research module demands the engagement of acquired methodological skills toward discoveries that advance a fundamental understanding of the determinants of health and strategies. The program culminates in the submission and defense of a dissertation on original research. 

Our curriculum is designed to prepare students to formulate hypotheses, design and conduct public health research and evaluate research findings in the context of risk factors, vulnerable populations, and health outcomes. Doctoral students in our program will acquire the research skills necessary to make discoveries that advance understanding of the biopsychosocial determinants of health and intervention strategies to improve health and prevent disease.

The degree program requires a total of 72 units: six preparatory core courses, four methods courses, four courses specific to each concentration (Biobehavioral Mechanisms of Health, Disease Prevention, or Global Health), and additional units for dissertation research. More detailed information on our curriculum is available in our  PhD Handbook , and links to sample courses can be found below.

Our program maintains a close mentor model and each student is assigned a faculty advisor who will guide the student toward developing a curriculum plan, initiation of research, and selection of the members of the dissertation committee. Our doctoral students typically complete most course requirements during the first two years and advance to doctoral candidacy during the third year. Advancement to candidacy requires mastery of required courses and successful oral defense of an original research proposal. Finally, upon completing their dissertation research students submit and defend a written doctoral dissertation.

Qualifying Exam

The qualifying examination consists of two parts. The first part is submission of a written research proposal to a Candidacy Committee of five faculty members consisting of four members with formal appointments in Public Health, and an external member. The second part is a public presentation and oral defense of the student’s dissertation research proposal before the same committee. Advancement to doctoral candidacy is contingent on passing both parts of the qualifying examination, as judged by the Candidacy Committee. The dissertation proposal must be at a level of quality such that its execution will advance knowledge and have the potential to yield original peer-reviewed publications.

Advancement to doctoral candidacy is contingent on passing the qualifying examination. We expect students to sit for the qualifying examination by the beginning of their third year in the program.

Dissertation

Ph.D. completion requires submission of an acceptable dissertation and oral defense. The normative time to degree is six years, and the maximum time permitted is eight years. Students will enroll in at least three quarters (or minimum of 12 units) of PUBHLTH 296 (Doctoral Dissertation Research and Writing) under the supervision of the Chair of the dissertation committee.

Students enrolled in the Ph.D. in Public Health are required to serve as Teaching Assistants in public health courses for two quarters during their graduate study. If English is not the student’s first language, the student must pass a campus-approved oral English proficiency exam prior to serving as a teaching assistant. Teaching is an important component of graduate training, as it helps graduate students learn how to communicate effectively about their field of knowledge. In addition, teaching experience is valuable to those planning for a career in academia. Graduate students with comparable prior teaching experience (e.g., through postgraduate degrees earned at UC Irvine or other comparable institution) may request a waiver of the teaching requirement. Each quarter a student serves as a Teaching Assistant, they must enroll in PubHlth 399: University Teaching.

UW School of Public Health ranks No. 7 in U.S. News & World Report Rankings

#7 ranking in US News

The University of Washington School of Public Health (UW SPH) continues to offer some of the best public health graduate education in the country, according to the 2024 rankings released by U.S. News & World Report . UW SPH ranked No. 7 among public health graduate schools and remains among the top 3 public schools in the annual rankings.  

UW SPH tied with Boston University for No. 7. The School’s programs also ranked highly, with five programs in the top 15: biostatistics (No. 7), environmental health sciences (No. 7), epidemiology (No. 9), health policy and management (No. 14), and social behavior (No. 14).  

The rankings of public health schools and programs are based on opinion surveys that are sent to deans, program directors, and other peers.  Learn more about U.S. News’ methodology here.  

The UW School of Law and the UW School of Medicine withdrew from the U.S. News rankings in 2022 and 2023, respectively, citing concerns that some of the methodology in the rankings for those specific disciplines incentivize actions and policies that run counter to the schools’ public service missions.  

UW leaders continue to work with U.S. News and other ranking organizations — to the extent they are open to it — to improve their methodologies. And schools, colleges and departments continually reevaluate the benefits and potential shortfalls of participating in specific rankings. 

This past year, UW SPH ranked No. 5 in the world on the Global Rankings of Academic Subjects lists for 2023, a widely used ranking conducted by researchers at the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. 

2020 marked the 50th anniversary of the UW School of Public Health. The School opened in 1970, becoming the first school of public health in the Pacific Northwest, and grew rapidly in the 1970s and ‘80s to become a research powerhouse and sought-after training destination. 

The School houses five departments, four interdepartmental programs, and more than 30 centers and institutes. The School’s 11,000+ alumni work to improve the health and well-being of communities in Washington state and around the world.

Johns Hopkins graduate programs again ranked among nation's best

'u.s. news & world report' includes 38 jhu programs among the top 10 in the u.s. in its annual rankings, including no. 1 ranked programs in nursing and public health.

Johns Hopkins University has 38 graduate schools, academic programs, and specialties ranked among the top 10 in the nation, including nine with No. 1 rankings, according to the latest edition of "Best Graduate Schools" from U.S. News & World Report , published earlier today.

Two schools at Hopkins—the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the School of Nursing —earned No. 1 rankings overall, and the School of Education entered the top 10, according to U.S. News & World Report .

Portions of the publication's annual list were released today but rankings for schools of medicine and engineering were delayed and will be released at a later date.

Among the new rankings released today:

The School of Nursing's DNP program ranked No. 1 for the third year in a row. Its master's degree programs tied at No. 1, up from No. 2 last year. In gerontology, the school moved up two spots to No. 1 for primary care, and up one spot to No. 2 for acute care. In other specialty areas, the School of Nursing's doctoral programs ranked:

  • Psychiatric/mental health: No. 1
  • Family: No. 3 (tied)
  • Leadership: No. 4 (tied)
  • Nursing Anesthesia: No. 36 (tie)

Public Health

The Bloomberg School retained its longtime No. 1 overall ranking among public health programs—it has held the top spot since 1994, the year the rankings began. In specialty areas, the Bloomberg School ranked:

  • Environmental Health Sciences: No. 1
  • Epidemiology: No. 1
  • Health Policy and Management (Public Health): No. 1
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences: No. 1
  • Biostatistics: No. 2

Johns Hopkins tied at No. 8 in the Education category, up from No. 13 last year. The school also tied at No. 23 in higher education administration programs.

Public Affairs

Overall, Johns Hopkins programs in public affairs tied at No. 39. In subcategories, Johns Hopkins tied at No. 6 in Health Policy and Management (Public Affairs), No. 11 in International/Global Policy and Administration, and tied at No. 35 in Public Policy Analysis.

U.S. News & World Report updates some of its rankings each year and republishes the most recent rankings in other areas. Among the republished rankings for Hopkins, which are still current:

Biological Sciences

Hopkins is tied for No. 6 overall with six top 10 specialty rankings:

  • Molecular biology: No. 3 (tie)
  • Cell biology: No. 4
  • Neuroscience: No. 4 (tie)
  • Immunology: No. 5
  • Genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics: No. 6 (tie)
  • Biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology: No. 8

Biostatistics

Hopkins is ranked No. 1 (tie) for Biostatistics at the doctoral level. (Note: U.S. News & World Report also ranks biostatistics as a sub-category of public health, where Hopkins is No. 2.)

The university is tied at No. 20 in Chemistry and ranks No. 9 in the Biochemistry subcategory.

Computer Science

The university is tied for No. 24 overall and tied at No. 21 in the specialty of Artificial Intelligence.

Earth Sciences

The university is tied at No. 30 in Earth Sciences.

Johns Hopkins' program in economics is tied at No. 22.

English tied at No. 13 overall with the following specialty rankings:

  • Literary criticism and theory: No. 3
  • British literature: No. 10 (tie)
  • American literature after 1865: No. 17

Health Care Management

The university is No. 7.

Johns Hopkins ranks No. 10 overall, with the following specialty rankings:

College of Public Health rankings soar in U.S. News & World Report - breaking the top 10 for graduate nursing programs

The George Mason College of Public Health has achieved major advancements in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings, marking a moment of recognition for its commitment to academic excellence and innovation in health education. The institution proudly announces that two distinguished graduate degrees—the Master of Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)—securing positions within the top 10 -- and five of its programs are now ranked among the top 100 in their respective fields.

Melissa J. Perry, Sc.D., MHS, Dean of the College, emphasized, "At Mason, our focus is clear: to foster excellence and innovation in public health education, research, and practice. As the pioneering College of Public Health in Virginia, we are setting t he standard for interprofessional education in this vital field. Our programs are designed to equip the next generation of health professionals with the knowledge and skills to address the complex health challenges of our time."  

Peterson Hall

The report showcases the remarkable progress for the College as well as specific programs. The College ranks #53 for public health schools, climbing 23 spots from last year. The DNP program has climbed 37 places to rank #2 nationally and claim ed the top position among public institutions. The MSN program now stands at #10 nationally and #4 among public universities, reflecting significant strides forward in these categories. The  MSW ranked #67 nationally, up 12 positions, signaling continuous growth and impact in the realm of public health and social work education.  

  Furthermore, the College's Master of Health Administration (MHA) program maintains its strong position at #32, consistently ranking within the top 50—a status last affirmed in the 2023 rankings .  

  As a pioneering institution for public health education, George Mason College of Public Health offers an extensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs, including five undergraduate degrees, 13 graduate degrees, and eight certificate programs. This diverse range of offerings underlines the College’s commitment to developing a workforce that is well-prepared to address the evolving challenges in public health and beyond.
