Essay on Population Growth for Students and Children

500+ words essay on population growth.

There are currently 7.7 billion people on our planet. India itself has a population of 1.3 billion people. And the population of the world is rising steadily year on year. This increase in the population, i.e. the number of people inhabiting our planet is what we call population growth. In this essay on population growth, we will see the reasons and the effects of this phenomenon on our planet and our societies.

One important feature of population growth is that over the last century it has shown exponential growth. When the pattern of increase is by a fixed quantity, we call this linear growth, for example, 3, 5, 7, 9 and so on. Exponential growth shows an increase by a fixed percentage, for example, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and so on. This exponential growth is the reason our population has seen such an immense increase over the past century and a half.

Causes of Population Growth

To fully understand the phenomenon, in this essay on population growth we will discuss some of its causes. Understanding the reasons for such exponential growth will help us better understand how to plan for the future. So let us begin with one of the main causes, which is the decline in the mortality rate.

Over the last century, we have made some very significant and notable advancements in medicine, science, and technology. We have invented vaccines, found new treatments and even almost completely eradicated some life-threatening diseases. This means that people now have a much higher life expectancy than their ancestors.

Along with the decrease in mortality rate, these advancements in medicine and science have also boosted the birth rates. We now have ways to help those with infertility and reproductive problems. Hence, birth rates around the world have also seen massive improvements. This coupled with slowing mortality rates has caused overpopulation.

Often the lack of proper education is also stated as the culprit of rampant overpopulation. People around the world need to be made aware of the ill-effects of global overpopulation. Values of family planning and sustainable growth needs to be instilled not only in children but adults also. The lack of this awareness and education is one of the reasons for this growth in population.

Effects of Population Growth

This exponential population growth that our planet has experienced over the last 150 years has had some severe negative effects. The most obvious and common impact is that overpopulation has put a great strain on the natural resources of the earth. As we know, some of the resources available to us come in limited quantities, for example, fossil fuels. When the population explosion happened, these resources are becoming rarer and will one day run out completely.

The increased population had also lead to increased pollution and industrialization . This has adversely affected our natural environment leading to more health problems in the majority of the population. And as the population keeps growing, the poorer countries are running out of food and other resources causing famines and various such disasters.

And as we are currently noticing in India, overpopulation also leads to massive unemployment. Overall the economic and financial condition of densely populated regions deteriorates due to the population explosion.

Essay on Population Growth

One of the major problems the world is facing is the problem of the exponential growth of the population. This problem is the greatest one. Most countries in the world are showing a steep rise in population figures. The world’s resources are limited and so they cannot support a population beyond a certain limit. There has been news about the scarcity of food grains and the paucity of jobs mounting across the world. The number of human beings is multiplying at a steady rate. The world population has already crossed the six billion mark and it is expected to double in the next three or four decades.

If the population continues to grow at this rate then the economy of the overpopulated countries will be unable to cope up with the growth of the population. Every attempt to bring peace, comfort and welfare to everybody’s door will be thwarted and misery will become prominent if the population is not kept within proper limits. Except for a few countries, all countries are facing a population boom. Currently, the largest populated country in the world is China and India is the second-largest populated country. India represents 17% of the world’s population. Other countries like Bangladesh, Japan, Indonesia and some countries of Europe are threatened to be burst into the seams by population explosion.

Causes of Population Growth

The major cause of population growth is the decrease in death rate and rise in the life span of the average individual. Earlier, there was a balance between the birth and death rate due to limited medical facilities, people dying in wars, and other calamities. The rapid spread of education has made people health conscious. People have become aware of the basic causes of diseases and simple remedies for them.

Illiteracy is another cause of an increase in population. Low literacy rate leads to traditional, superstitious, and ignorant people. Educated people are well aware of birth control methods.

Family planning, welfare programs, and policies have not fetched the desired result. The increase in population is putting tremendous pressure on the limited infrastructure and negating the progress of any country.

The superstitious people mainly from rural places think that having a male child would give them prosperity and so there is considerable pressure on the parents to produce children till a male child is born. This leads to population growth in underdeveloped countries like India, Bangladesh.

Poverty is another main reason for this. Poor people believe that the more people in the family, the more will be the number of persons to earn bread. Hence it contributes to the increase in population.

Continuous illegal migration of people from neighbouring countries leads to a rise in the population density in the countries.

Religion sentiment is another cause of the population explosion. Some orthodox communities believe that any mandate or statutory method of prohibition is sacrilegious.

Impact Due to Population

The growth of the population has a major impact on the living standards of people. Overpopulation across the world may create more demand for freshwater supply and this has become a major issue because Earth has only 3% of freshwater.

The natural resources of Earth are getting depleted because of the exponential growth of the population. These resources cannot be replenished so easily. If there is no check on the growth of population then there will be a day in the next few years when these natural resources will run out completely.

There is a huge impact on the climatic conditions because of the growth of the population. Human activities are responsible for changing global temperature.

Impact of Overpopulation on Earth’s Environment

The Earth's current population is almost 7.6 billion people, and it is expanding. It is expected to surpass 8 billion people by 2025, 9 billion by 2040, and 11 billion by 2100. The population is quickly increasing, far surpassing our planet's ability to maintain it, given existing habits.

Overpopulation is linked to a variety of detrimental environmental and economic consequences, including over-farming, deforestation, and water pollution, as well as eutrophication and global warming. Although many incredible things are being done to increase human sustainability on our planet, the problem of too many people has made long-term solutions more difficult to come across.

Overpopulation is mostly due to trends that began with a rise in birth rates in the mid-twentieth century. Migration can also result in overcrowding in certain areas. Surprisingly, an area's overcrowding may arise without a net increase in population. It can happen when a population with an export-oriented economy outgrows its carrying capacity and migratory patterns remain stable. "Demographic entrapment" has been coined to describe this situation.

Some Major Effects of the High Population are as Follows

The rapid growth of the population has caused major effects on our planet.

The rapidly growing population in the world has led to the problem of food scarcity and heavy pressure on land resources.

Generating employment opportunities in vastly populated countries is very difficult.

The development of infrastructural facilities is not able to cope up with the pace of a growing population. So facilities like transportation, communication, housing, education, and healthcare are becoming inadequate to provide provision to the people.

The increasing population leads to unequal distribution of income and inequalities among the people widened.

There will be a large proportion of unproductive consumers due to overpopulation.

Economic development is bound to be slower in developing countries in which the population is growing at a very fast rate. This also leads to low capital formation. Overpopulation makes it difficult to implement policies.

When there is rapid growth in a country then the government of that country is required to provide the minimum facilities for the people for their comfortable living. Hence, it has to increase housing, education, public health, communication and other facilities that will increase the cost of the social overheads.

Rapid population growth is also an indication of the wastage of natural resources.

Preventive Measures

To tackle this problem, the government of developing countries needs to take corrective measures. The entire development of the country depends on how effectively the population explosion is stemmed.

The government and various NGOs should raise awareness about family planning and welfare. Awareness about the use of contraceptive pills and family planning methods should be generated.

The health care centres in developing and under-developed countries should help the poor people with the free distribution of contraceptives and encourage the control of the number of children.

The governments of developing countries should come forward to empower women and improve the status of women and girls. People in rural places should be educated and modern amenities should be provided for recreation.

Education plays a major role in controlling the population. People from developing countries should be educated so that they understand the implications of overpopulation.

Short Summarised Points On Population Growth

Based on the number of deaths and births, population growth might be positive or negative.

If a country's birth rate outnumbers its death rate, the population grows, whereas more ends result in a drop.

There are 7.7 billion people on the earth, and India, with 1.3 billion people, is the second-most populous country after China.

Mumbai, the Bollywood capital, is India's most populous city, with a population of 12 billion people. Delhi, India's most populous city, comes in second with 11 billion inhabitants.

The advancement of knowledge in science, medicine, and technology has resulted in lower mortality and higher fertility, resulting in population rise.

Factors contributing to India's population expansion, such as mortality and fertility rates, child marriage, a lack of family planning, polygamy marriage, and so on, have wreaked havoc on the ecosystem.

Industrialization, deforestation, urbanisation, and unemployment have all been exacerbated by population expansion. These causes degrade our environment and contribute to societal health issues.

Pollution, global warming, climate change, natural catastrophes, and, most importantly, unemployment are all caused by the population.

To keep population increase under control, individuals must have access to education and be aware of the dangers of overpopulation.

The government must raise public awareness about illiteracy and educate individuals about the need for birth control and family planning.

Overpopulation may lead to many issues like depletion of natural resources, environmental pollution and degradation and loss of surroundings.  All countries must take immediate steps to control and manage human population growth.

Essay on Population for Students in English | 500+ Words Essay

December 20, 2020 by Sandeep

Essay on Population: The total number of lives living in a particular area is referred to as a population. The population of a particular region provides us with information about the estimated resources they require. India has the second largest population after China. A growing population requires a fast and growing economy, and its needs also change rapidly with time.

Essay on Population 500 Words in English

Below we have provided an essay on Population, suitable for class 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 school students.

The total number of persons residing in a geographic area is called the population. The evaluation of the population consists of gathering and analyzing data on the number of people in a geographic area. Thus, the population census is the headcount of all persons who live in a particular area at a given period.  It helps to determine the size and rate of population growth. It helps to access the standard of living. It reveals the rate of migration and determines the rate of unemployment . There has been a huge increase in population in the world. This is a major issue as there is the scarce of natural resources . It is necessary to control the population to limit their usage and save them for future generations.

India’s Population Crisis

India’s population is continuously increasing. This is creating various problems for future generations. India has a large population of approximately 138 crores. It is the second-largest populated country and is expected to overtake China by 2027. However, India’s population is steadily decreasing since the past decade. The average woman had five children fifty years ago; nowadays, this number is two. In 2019, BJP MP Rakesh Sinha launched a bill called as regulation bill 2019. It is focused to take action against people having more than two children. This bill seeks denial of financial benefits and food to such people. India has spent 7500 crores in family planning.  The population is a liability, not an asset. The huge population of India provides extensive workforce resources if appropriately utilised, which can increase the economic condition of India.

Causes of Population Growth

Technology is drastically changing human life. It is also affecting the population. In 1850, there were only 1 billion people on the planet. In 2011, our population reached 7 billion. This surge in growth came because of movements in agriculture and medicines. We have to take important steps to control it as the population is growing at a fast rate of 1 percent every year. Causes of population increase are-

  • Poverty is one of the most significant contributing factors in the growth of the population. It causes a lack of educational resources, thus leading to an increase in population.
  • Immigration rates are not calculated properly. This has led to an uncontrolled increase in population and is very problematic for the countries.
  • Due to the huge advancements in research and medicine, the death rates have been lowered down. The diseases are easy to detect, and faster techniques are deployed to control them. Though death rates fall, birth rates are increasing at a constant rate, leading to a surge in population.
  • The birth rates are continuously increasing. Many fertility treatments are available, which increases contraception. This causes pregnancies with fewer complications and much safer.
  • People are not aware of family planning. Illiteracy rates are also a big reason for the increase in population. Getting married at an early age increases the chances of more kids.

Effects of Population Growth

There are various harmful effects of population growth. Few of them includes:-

  • On Earth, we have a definite amount of resources like water, petroleum, etc. As populations are increasing every year, there are fewer resources for everyone. It can also cause conflicts between countries for resources.
  • As our population increases, there is a shortage of natural resources leading to their exploitation. It causes more pollution. It causes climate change and global warming . This is a huge environmental problem.
  • When the country becomes overpopulated, a deficiency of jobs takes place. It leads to poverty and financial instability.
  • When there are more people and fewer resources, the cost of living increases. The price of food, shelter, and healthcare goes high. This means people have to pay more for a good quality of life, causing an upsurge in poverty.

Government Role in Controlling Population

Some steps were taken by the government to control the population are-

  • The government has set a minimum age of marriage. It is 21 years for men and 18 years for women.
  • Education changes the thinking of people. It leads to better family planning and fewer children by educated families. Most educated men and women do marriages late and plan children according to the norms of government.
  • Proper supply of contraceptives has been enhanced, and now contraceptives are available easily online and offline both to control the number of births and unexpected pregnancies.
  • Over 150 family planning clinics had been opened for implementing family planning programs to control the growth of the population.

The Cause and Effect of the Growing Population Essay

Introduction, population growth cause traffic congestion and air pollution, population causes water pollution, population growth and the ecosystem, works cited.

The increase in the number of species over a certain ecosystem over a given period is itself population growth. Numerous factors cause population growth either in human beings or in animals. Nevertheless, the increase in population has its own advantages and disadvantages.

While population growth can lead to cheap labor in human beings, it can also lead to pollution, ecosystem change and competition over minimal resources. Population growth varies from one place to another depending on the economic status of the inhabitant species. For example, in areas where poverty dominates, the level of births is arguably high while in industrialized countries, birth control mechanisms exhibit, leading to controlled population growth.

Population growth increases proportionally with the existing opportunities like food, water and shelter. Nonetheless, when population is high, people tend to fight over resources like water, food, oil and other natural resources. Consequently, all manner pollution, environmental degradation and contamination result.

Environmental consequences can cause diseases and sometimes death of species. It is therefore good for any government to act in a manner that will control population growth in their respective countries. Some of the elements used to normalize population growth include death and birth rate control.

Where population growth is high, so are death rates. Sometimes death rates can act as a population control measure. However, this element is not an effective control measure. The most effective population control measures comprise of enactment of birth control policies. The paper examines the causes and effects of population growth in human beings.

Population growth has many negative than positive effects. For example, high population means many people own cars. This is a positive effect since; cars increase comfort and ease traveling from one place to another. However, with the increase in the number of cars on roads, traffic congestion occurs. Under this scenario, transport system becomes a burden to many who want to reach their workplaces earlier enough.

Moreover, exhaust fumes from the high number of cars lead to air pollution hence, environmental degradation. Additionally, these cars emit thick and cloudy fumes full of dangerous gases responsible for ozone depletion. Statistics carried out by environment ministries and non-governmental organizations indicate that, since 1990s, population growth has led to overcrowding of cars on roads hence terrible traffic jams.

Furthermore, these people own cars that fume dangerous gases to the atmosphere hence air pollution. For example, environmental scientists record high percentages of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon monoxide (CO2) gases released from cars as responsible for global warming.

In addition to global warming, these gases are dangerous to human health. They create fatal respiratory diseases and some people can contract cancerous diseases, which affects their health status. Transport researchers note that, when there is traffic congestion, cars release high percentage carbon monoxide due to low traveling speeds. (Lewyn, Para 1-6).

In any living scenario, water is one of the most important basic needs. Human beings have varied water use demands. For example, people use water to generate electricity, to transport goods from one place to another, do recreational and use it in other commercial transaction rationales. For these reasons, water becomes part of human living. However, there is a problem with water when population growth occurs.

This is because; water consumption rate increases and consequently, pollution result. Water pollution is a state where human beings perform activities, which end up contaminating water with other dangerous particles. For example, increased population numbers rely on agriculture for survival. In agricultural practices, people use chemicals like pesticides, fertilizers and other herbicides to protect crops-predators.

During rainy seasons, rainwater sweeps these chemicals into water catchments thus, polluting water. On the other hand, reliance of industries to create a living to the growing population has adverse water effects. On many occasions, the release of industrial sewerage into rivers and lakes cause water pollution.

Domestic activities like bathing, washing of clothes, washing of utensils and other household equipments lead to water pollution as well. Furthermore, the problem enhance when water users become many, thus creating competition. Even in flushing toilets, the scarcity of water caused by overpopulation can lead to waterborne diseases, which in turn, affect human beings negatively. (Krantz, Kifferson Para. 1-10).

Because of population growth, all manner waste products; biological, chemical and mechanical lead to ecosystem change. Human practices within a certain environment lead to ecosystem change. The high numbers of human beings consume the available vegetation leaving an ecosystem changed.

Likewise, in order to create shelter, people cut trees and build houses thus, destroying vegetation. On the other hand, building manufacturing industries change the ecosystem of a given place, in addition to air and water pollution. Human activities like road construction, charcoal burning, and pollution change the ecosystem of a certain place. (Green Facts Para. 1-19).

It is apparent to note that; population growth has adverse effects on the environment. Through population growth, there is an increase in the number of cars on roads, which end up causing traffic congestion and air pollution. Traffic congestions force vehicles to move at relatively low speeds thus, emitting dangerous gases to the atmosphere.

These gases are air pollutants, which participate in global warming. On the other hand, human activities through water lead to water pollution while on the other hand; other human activities geared to economic stability can cause ecosystem change. It is therefore the responsibility of any sitting government to enact policies aimed at controlling population growth for the good of the few living species.

Introduction

Population of the World is increasing day by day and it is becoming a huge concern for the world. As per latest data, population is already crossed 7.6 billion in the world. Increase in population affects the economic, environmental and social development of the world.

Different Country with Different Population

Population growth is not uniform in all the countries of the World. Some Countries have high growth while some are having moderate or a very low increase in their population. It creates lot of challenges as countries with high growth are suffering with poverty, more expenses, unemployment, lack of fresh water, food, education, depletion of resources etc as a consequence of population explosion, while countries with low population growth have lack of manpower, an increased old to young ratio , hampering the Country’s growth.

Effects of Population Growth

Let’s see how population affects a country in various ways:

Introduction.

The concept of population refers to the total number of individuals inhabiting a particular area or space. It is a vital study field in disciplines such as sociology, economics, and environmental science, providing insights into human behavior, resource allocation, and environmental impacts.

Population Growth and Its Implications

Population growth is a phenomenon that has significant implications on a global scale. Rapid population growth often leads to overpopulation, straining resources and infrastructure. This strain can lead to challenges such as food scarcity, inadequate healthcare, and environmental degradation.

Population Control Measures

To counter these challenges, population control measures are crucial. Family planning, education, and women’s empowerment are some effective strategies. These measures can help in controlling the population by reducing birth rates and promoting sustainable living.

Population and Economic Development

The relationship between population and economic development is complex. On one hand, a larger population can provide a larger labor force, potentially leading to economic growth. On the other hand, if not managed effectively, a large population can lead to unemployment and poverty.

In conclusion, understanding population dynamics is critical for sustainable development and resource management. While population growth can present challenges, effective population control measures and strategic planning can turn these challenges into opportunities. The study of population thus remains a key area of focus for sustainable future planning.

500 Words Essay on Population

Population refers to the total number of living beings residing in a specific region at a particular time. It encompasses all species, including humans, animals, plants, and microorganisms. However, in common parlance, when we refer to ‘population,’ we usually mean the human population. This essay focuses on the human population, its growth, impacts, and the challenges it presents.

Population Growth and Its Causes

The human population has witnessed a tremendous increase over the centuries. From approximately 1 billion in the 1800s, it surged to over 7.8 billion in 2020. This exponential growth can be attributed to several factors. Advancements in medical science have significantly reduced mortality rates, while improvements in agriculture and food production have ensured better sustenance. Simultaneously, industrialization and urbanization have led to better living conditions, further contributing to population growth.

Impacts of Population Growth

Population growth has both positive and negative impacts. On the positive side, a larger population means a larger workforce, which can lead to economic growth. It also leads to cultural diversity and the exchange of ideas, fostering innovation and progress.

However, the negative impacts often overshadow the positive ones. Overpopulation leads to increased demand for resources, causing environmental degradation. It also exacerbates social issues like unemployment, poverty, and inequality. The strain on public services like education, healthcare, and infrastructure is another significant concern.

Challenges and Solutions

The challenges posed by population growth are manifold. The most pressing issue is the sustainable management of resources. With a growing population, the demand for resources like water, food, and energy is escalating, leading to their depletion and increased pollution.

Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive strategies. Family planning and education can help control population growth. Simultaneously, sustainable practices in agriculture, industry, and energy production can ensure resource conservation. Furthermore, policies promoting social equity can mitigate some of the adverse social impacts of population growth.

Population growth is a complex issue with far-reaching implications. While it presents opportunities for economic growth and cultural diversity, it also poses significant challenges in terms of resource sustainability and social equity. Therefore, managing population growth requires a balanced approach, encompassing not just population control, but also sustainable practices and equitable policies. The future of our planet depends on how effectively we can navigate this intricate issue.

The population is the total number of individuals living in a particular area at a given time. It is a crucial factor that affects various aspects of human life, including economic growth, social stability, environmental sustainability, and public health. The population of the world has been increasing at an exponential rate over the past few centuries, and this trend is expected to continue in the future.

Additionally, better living standards, access to education, and improved economic conditions have resulted in an increase in birth rates.

The consequences of a rapidly growing population can be both positive and negative. On the positive side, a larger population can stimulate economic growth by creating more demand for goods and services, which can result in increased employment opportunities and a boost in consumer spending. Moreover, a larger workforce can help to address labour shortages in certain industries and contribute to the development of new technologies.

On the negative side, population growth can put significant strain on natural resources, particularly in areas where resources are already limited. It can lead to deforestation, water shortages, and soil degradation, which can negatively impact the environment and undermine sustainability. Additionally, a large population can exacerbate issues related to public health and social inequality, particularly in developing countries where access to healthcare and other essential services may be limited.

In conclusion, population growth is a complex and multifaceted issue that has significant implications for human well-being and the environment. While a larger population can bring many benefits, it is essential to ensure that population growth is sustainable and does not put undue strain on natural resources or social and economic systems. Governments and policymakers must implement effective strategies to address the challenges of population growth and ensure a prosperous and sustainable future for all.

Essay On Overpopulation

Essay on Overpopulation: Today, there are a total of 8.1 billion people in the world. This is a result of overpopulation and studies suggest that in the next 25 years, this number will reach 10 billion. This is overpopulation or overabundance, where our environment cannot offer resources to such large amounts of people. Overpopulation is not limited to humans only. It can be of any species living in a particular habitat.

population growth essay 500 words

India, China, and the USA are the three most populated countries in the world, which account for a total of 40% of the global population. Population plays a major role in a country’s development. However, if there is overpopulation, it will hamper developmental activities and there will be fewer resources available. This will eventually lead to higher food prices, making survival difficult for everyone.

Causes of Overpopulation

There are various causes of overpopulation, such as lack of education, high birth rates, primitive medical facilities, illiteracy, lack of employment opportunities, etc. Most of these factors are prevalent in developing and underdeveloped countries.

High birth rates contribute significantly to overpopulation. Factors such as lack of access to family planning, cultural norms, and a high infant mortality rate can encourage families to have more children.

Lack of education and poverty lead to higher population growth. People belonging to communities where education is limited, are not aware of or have access to family planning methods.

In many places, cultural and religious beliefs influence reproductive choices. Some families have several children, which is part of their social norm or is encouraged by religious teachings.

Another major cause of overpopulation is migration. People move to areas with better economic prospects, leading to population density issues in those regions.

Consequences of Overpopulation

In one way or another, all the problems the world is facing today are related to overpopulation. Say it war, overuse of resources, slow developmental activities, carbon emission, global warming, etc.

Natural resources are depleting at a faster rate than ever. As the population increases, the demand for food and energy resources also increases. Overpopulation contributes to climate change, loss of biodiversity, and other environmental issues.

As humans, we need houses, which are established by cutting down forests and other natural resources. This results in a loss of biodiversity. Rapid urbanization causes problems such as inadequate housing, insufficient infrastructure, traffic congestion, and increased pollution in urban areas.

A rapidly growing population can outstrip job opportunities, resulting in high levels of unemployment. This can lead to social unrest and economic instability.

How to Deal With Overpopulation

Educating people about the causes and effects of overpopulation is one of the best ways to deal with overpopulation. Studies show that people who have access to proper medical and healthcare facilities have better family planning measures.

Promoting and educating women and girls about reproduction is very important. Educated women tend to have fewer children and this will make them socially and economically more empowered. Encouraging women to participate in the workforce and decision-making processes can be another way to deal with overpopulation.

Offering job opportunities and promoting green sustainable development will allow people to understand the effects of overpopulation on the environment.

The world is our home and we are its protector. Overpopulation is putting a lot of strain on the natural environment, and it needs to be addressed in a civilised way. We need to make sure there is enough for everyone and that we are fulfilling our duty to Mother Nature.

Ans: The major causes of overpopulation are high birth rate, lack of education and illiteracy, poverty, cultural and religious beliefs, etc.

Ans: Some of the least populated countries are Iceland, Suriname, Mongolia, San Marino, Liechtenstein, and Palau.

Ans: Overpopulation is a phenomenon where a particular species exceeds the carrying capacity of the environment. The global population has increased by 1.2 billion in the last 20 years. This was the biggest population boom, putting a heavy strain on the natural environment. Overpopulation is majorly caused in developing countries, because of factors like lack of education and illiteracy, higher birth rates, poverty, etc. Proper government actions are required to address overpopulation, such as educational and family planning programs, women empowerment, job opportunities, etc.

Population Explosion Essay

500+ words population explosion essay.

Population explosion means a sudden increase in the number of individuals in a particular species. The term is used to refer to the world’s human population. In India, the Population explosion has become a severe matter of concern because the increase in population leads to poverty and illiteracy. In this situation, it is difficult to cope with the economy of the country with the rapid growth of the population. The Government of India is now looking into the matter seriously, and many states have framed laws to tackle the problem of population explosion.

Major Causes of Population Explosion

1. increase in birth rate.

One of the major causes for the growth of the population is the high birth rate. During the 1891-1990 period, the birth rate declined from 45.8 per thousand in India, but it is still considered high. So, unfortunately, in India, the birth rate has not seen a decrease in spite of the framing laws in terms of family planning, population education, campaigns, etc.

2. Decrease in Death Rate

In recent years, the decrease in the death rate has been another factor contributing to the rapid growth of the population. In 2001, the death rate in India was about 8.5 per thousand. The death rate has seen a decrease due to advancements in the medical field. For example, chronic diseases like typhoid, chickenpox, etc., are no longer dreaded. Even the infant mortality rate has decreased because of proper sanitation facilities, cleanliness, and better prenatal and postnatal care.

3. Early Marriage

Early marriage is also an essential factor in the rapid increase in population. In India, the marriage age of a girl is 18, which is very low compared to other countries, which is about 23 to 25 years. It leads to a longer span of reproductive activity.

4. Religious and Social Reasons

In India, marriage is considered a compulsory social institution, and every person should marry. Every individual in a joint family takes equal responsibility and has access to an equivalent level of consumption. So, people don’t hesitate to increase their family size to a joint family. In India, most people think that one male child is necessary, and in the expectation of getting a male child, they increase their family size.

Another major cause of the population explosion is poverty. In most families, children become the source of income. From a very young age, children start working for their families instead of going to school, and they become a precious asset to the family. So, every individual becomes an earning member and additional income for the family.

6. Standard of Living

It is seen that people with a low standard of living wish to have additional children as it will be an asset for them rather than a liability. As we know, most of India’s population is uneducated, so they don’t understand the importance of family planning. They are unaware that they can enjoy a better quality of life with a small family.

7. Illiteracy

In India, 60% of the population is either illiterate or has minimum education, which leads to minimal employment opportunities. So, due to the high illiteracy rate and belief in social customs, child marriage and preference for a male child still prevail. As a result, there is a rapid population growth rate in India.

Effects of Population Explosion

1. the problem of unemployment.

An increase in population leads to a vast army of the labour force. But, it is difficult to employ such extensive labour working force due to a shortage of capital resources. Disguised unemployment in rural areas and open unemployment in urban areas are fundamental features of an underdeveloped country like India.

2. More Pressure on Land

Overpopulation creates more pressure on land. It adversely affects the economic development of the country. On the one hand, per capita availability of land goes on diminishing and on the other, the problem of subdivision and fragmentation of holdings increases.

3. Environmental Degradation

Extensive use of natural resources and energy production of oil, natural gas, and coal negatively impacts the planet. An increase in population also leads to deforestation, which directly affects the environment, and it also degrades the soil’s nutritional value and causes landslides and global warming.

So, at last, we can wrap up the essay by stating that overpopulation is considered one of the biggest challenges humanity faces.

Population growth is one of the driving forces behind all environmental problems, as a growing population needs a considerable amount of non-renewable resources for its existence. If there are more births over deaths, then there is population growth, while more deaths over childbirth lead to a decrease in population growth.

One of the highlighting features of rapid population growth is the exponential growth that has occurred over the last century. When the growth pattern of a nation is by a fixed quantity, it shows a linear growth, and population growth is a linear process.

Exponential growth occurs by a fixed percentage, and it is due to this exponential growth factor, the population over the past century has experienced a tremendous increase rate.

With the onset of the Industrial revolution, the improvement in the field of food supply and health care has to the rapid growth of the human population. The rate of population growth has slowed down in industrialized countries but continues at an exponential rate in developing and more impoverished countries.

Causes of Population Growth:

There are huge problems that are the root cause of India’s population growth. Factors such as mortality and fertility rates, child marriage, boy’s importance, ignorance about family planning, rational decisions, polygamy marriage, and the age and sex factors of the present population influence population growth.

With time, humans have made notable and significant advancements in the field of technology, science, and medicine. With the invention of treatments, vaccines, and the eradication of various diseases, people today have a higher life expectancy than their forefathers.

These inventions have also led to a decrease in mortality rates, boosted fertility rates, and have solved reproductive and infertility problems. Hence the massive improvements in birth rates and slowing mortality rates have been the main reason behind overpopulation problems.

Education is a vital tool to spread awareness among people. Often, the lack of Education, illiteracy, and awareness among people causes overpopulation.

Effects of Population Growth:

The exponential growth in population has caused severe effects on our planet. The most common and current impact of population growth is the limited quantity of natural resources, mainly fossil fuels. Due to the population explosion, resources are decreasing, becoming rarer, and will run out entirely.

The overgrowth in population has led to massive effects such as industrialization, pollution, and unemployment. These components have adversely affected our environment leading to various health problems in society.

Deforestation of spaces has destroyed the natural habitats of species and has disturbed ecological balance. And with the rapid increase in population, pooper nations suffer famines and various other natural disasters due to a shortage of food and other resources. Another adverse effect is global warming and climate change, which are the significant consequences of the increasing population.

To control population growth, people around the world need awareness on family planning values, the ill-effects of global overpopulation, and the sustainable growth values. Awareness programs and rewards might boost the knowledge of population growth.

In short, Population growth declines the overall financial and economic conditions and deterioration of populated nations.

Short Essay on Population Growth 200 Words in English

The 200 words short essay mentioned below is suitable for kids and classes of 1,2,3,4,5 and 6. The essay is written to guide the children with their school works-assignments and comprehension exercises.

The population is the total number of people living in a particular geographic area. The population is the cause of concern in many nations. Population growth demands more resources, such as fossil fuels, vegetation, shelter space, etc. Our plant is gradually running short of funds. India ranks second as the most populated country with 1.3 billion people.

There are various reasons behind the exponential population growth. Illiteracy plays a significant role as the majority of India’s rural section is illiterate. They lack awareness of factors such as family planning and child marriage and indulge in early marriage and reproduction.

Due to the advancement in Technology, Medicine, and Science, another main reason for overpopulation is decreased mortality and increased fertility rate. These factors of population growth lead to severe effects on the environment.

Population growth has lead to the rise of many industries, which causes harmful impacts like unemployment, deforestation, increased water and air pollution, ecological imbalance, global warming, and climate change.

People must control population growth, and this is possible only through education and awareness. The government of India should create awareness, eradicate illiteracy, and educate people on essential topics like birth control and family planning values. They must encourage the education of all the social classes to stop the rise in population.

Thus, we need to take adequate measures to control population growth and save our planet.

Population Explosion Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

Population Explosion Essay - Population refers to a group of living beings of the same kind as humans, animals or birds that lives in a specific habitat or specific place. Population explosion means a sudden and rapid growth in the population of a given place or area across a specified time. An increase in population at a normal pace is known as population growth. Here are a few sample essays on “Population Explosion” .

100 Words Essay on Population Explosion

The term population refers to the number of existing people in a particular area, place, city or country. Excessive population is a curse for any country as it is pretty challenging to manage and cope with the needs of people. It is because every country has a limited amount of resources, and it becomes impossible to manage the economy of the country in that scenario.

Population explosion creates many problems as it impacts the living standards of the people significantly. Generally, the country which suffers from this affair is in the developing or underdeveloped stages. Everybody suffers a lot due to this as the burden on resources has to be borne by the people themselves, which in turn leads to compromise on the basic amenities too.

200 Words Essay on Population Explosion

At a global level, presently, China is the most populous country in the world, accompanied by India in the second position. Research at a global level has concluded that the nations in their developing phase are more populous than the developed ones (Source: The World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision, published by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.)

Impact of Population Explosion

The rising population leads to unemployment, exploitation of natural resources, excessive wastage of water, global warming, etc. Some major causes of the population explosion are illiteracy, low education level among women, etc. It leads to various problems like depletion of natural resources. Also, one of the most common problems is unemployment. The government becomes incapable of employing such a huge population. People are unaware of the fact that their next generation and heirs will have to face the repercussions of their deeds today.

China adopted the One-Child Policy, though it didn't work as per expectations . But our government should also formulate such a plan in order to curb the prevailing problem. The government should also take the initiative to promote a girl child because it is the mother who suffers physically and mentally in expectation to give birth to a male child.

500 Words Essay on Population Explosion

Presently, India accounts for around 17.5% of the total world population (Source: based on worldometer elaboration of the United Nations data.) CNN World writes, "It is estimated that India will surpass China almost by the year 2023 in terms of population." There has been an exponential growth in our population since our independence, i.e. 1947. The Population of India at the time of independence was around 34 crore, whereas we are expected to reach about 165 crore in the year 2050. (Source: Govt. of India)

Causes of Population Explosion

The major cause of the problem is low literacy among economically backward people. It is a common belief among them that more children will help them in solving their problem of poverty as they will have more hands to earn. Child marriages are prevalent in many Indian states even today. People are still gender-biased, and the desire to have a male child results in giving birth to more children.

Impacts of Population Explosion

This population explosion is impacting the entire globe. The significant increase in the population has led to the over utilisation of natural resources. Also, it has increased poverty among the people, and the gap between the rich and poor has increased dramatically. Not only these, but the cost of living has also significantly increased due to excess demand for basic necessities. Illiteracy has increased because more people cannot educate their children because they cannot afford it.

Examples of Population Explosion

There is a slum at an approximate distance of 5 km from our home. The slum-dwellers live a very unhealthy life. They do not have access to the basic amenities of life. The government is non-responsive to the needs of the people there. The men work as daily wage labourers in the nearby glass factory. Many times, the children are also found working at the same factory.

My friends and I got to know about this through a local newspaper. We decided to go to this place and see if we could do anything to improve their living conditions. Upon conducting a small survey, we learnt that almost all the houses had at least 4-5 children each. And the total population of the particular place showed shocking figures. We met with the district magistrate after an appointment and explained the situation. Also, we asked a few local people to accompany us so that the magistrate could listen to the problems and understand their pain.

When the magistrate learnt about the same, she immediately ordered her officers to accompany us and do the needful. We also took the initiative to make people understand the issue of population explosion and also organised various problems caused by the same. We motivated people to send their children to school. Also, the magistrate was very happy to see us working for the community and asked us to bring more such issues to her knowledge.

Equally, a good standard of living has to be provided to the children by educating them, providing them with healthy food and skill training, and also bringing an ample number of employment opportunities so that they can be an asset to the country.
