An anchor activity in every presentation.

“If we’re running short on time, I’ll typically cut the anchor activities and jump right into the content.”

I was leading a train-the-trainer workshop and some of the people who were using our curriculum were sharing tips and tricks for how to facilitate a session, especially when the curriculum was so packed and it was so easy to fall behind. The idea of cutting the anchor activity made me cringe.

We use a design model that incorporates the following steps:

What is an Anchor Activity?

Similar to an icebreaking activity , the anchor activity will be the first thing that participants experience for each new topic. Unlike ice-breaking activities, the anchor step we use is an intentional design decision based upon Malcolm Knowles work on adult learning  (adults are most interested in topics that have immediate relevance to their own work or lives) and Gagne’s nine events of instruction  (#3: stimulate recall of prior knowledge).

In short, an anchor activity is a learning activity designed to anchor new content in a learner’s prior knowledge or experience. It’s a way to help learners establish a connection to otherwise new or unfamiliar information.

Anchor Activity Examples

Anchor activities can be something as simple as: “I’d like everyone to think of a time when you were told you had to do something (whether or not you actually wanted to do it). Ok, now let’s talk about change management…”

Anchor activities can be lengthy and complex, too. “Good morning, we’re going to begin today’s session by playing a game similar to Trivial Pursuit, in which you’ll spend the next 45 minutes working your way around a game board and trying to answer questions about today’s content to find out how much you already know, and where you might have some gaps.”

The reason I cringed during that train the trainer workshop is that anchor activities cannot be viewed as nice-to-have or superfluous. When learners can’t connect to new or unfamiliar content, the likelihood that new concepts will bounce off the learners’ brains grows. Skipping ahead and jumping into your content without first helping your learners connect usually looks like this (from a learner’s perspective):

I also understand that trying to squeeze too many “activities” into a presentation can lead to activity fatigue. When you bounce from one activity to the next, the learners may begin to feel like they’re being cheated, that they came for content and information and all they’re doing is activity after activity.

How to Anchor Your Content

Here are a few ways to quickly anchor your content without overusing more traditional, get-up-out-of-your-seat activities:

• Have learners briefly think of their best experience with something related to your content (customer service experience, learning experience, being on the receiving end of a sales call, etc).
• Have learners briefly think of their worst experience.
• Share a quote, lyric, poem or proverb that connects to your content.
• Watch a short video or popular commercial that incorporates some of the same principles upon which your content will touch.
• Use a short, guided visualization to quickly transport your learners to a different time or place (“I’d like everyone to just think for a moment of a world in which ____ no longer existed. What would that look like? How would it feel? Well, today, we’re going to discuss how we could actually make that a reality…”)

Your audience doesn’t need to be physically active to anchor your content into their minds based upon their prior experiences, but they do need to be actively (mentally) engaged each time you introduce a new topic or concept.

Discipline in school life is very important for students. In school education, discipline is a set of rules & regulations that remind us of the proper code of behavior. Discipline is ever more important during school life. But discipline is not only important for school students it’s for everyone.

We have selected one disciplined student from each class, who has followed the rules and regulations and also remained clean throughout the year. Now I am going to name these students and they are requested to be present here and receive their certificates.

It is important for an anchor to always start a program with a quote, a poem or some famous saying so that he or she is able to capture the attention of the audience. For dance performance events, quotes on the topic of dance, expression, creativity and art can be a good start.

“Good morning/ good afternoon/ good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I am [your name] , your host for today’s/ tonight’s program. On the behalf of [insert the name of the academy/organisers; eg. ABC Dance Academy] , I warmly welcome you all to this event. We are really honoured to have the Honourable Sourabh Rao, M.L.A., and Dance Master Rohit Tyagi as our chief guests today. Dear chief guests, invitees, parents and guardians as well as our beloved students, I am very glad to have you all with us today/ tonight and I welcome you with all my heart to witness and enjoy the event.

Today/ tonight, the students of our [academy name] are going to present several amazing dance performances for you. They have trained for months and practised hard under the guidance and supervision of our teachers. Let us all look forward to their performances with a lot of excitement and anticipation. Thank you.”

“I would first like to invite our respected Academy Head, Mr/ Ms [name] and our honourable guests, Mr/ Ms [name] and Mr/ Ms [name] to please come up on the stage. Thank you.

Now, I would like to request Mr/ Ms [Academy Head’s name] to honour our chief guests with the bouquets and mementoes. We thank you for gracing us with your presence. Thank you.”

After the ceremony:

“- Thank you, respected sir/ ma’am. I would now request you all to please take your seats and enjoy the event. Thank you. Let’s give them a huge round of applause.”

Inviting the Dance Guru/ Headteacher to Say a Few Words

Without teachers, life would have no class. Our respected Guru once reiterated a quote by  Merce Cunningham to us. It said – ‘You have to love dancing to stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that fleeting moment when you feel alive.

It is not for unsteady souls.’ It became our go-to quote every time things got hard. Our Guru’s words always give us strength and motivation and help us keep moving forward. So, I would now like to request our beloved Dance Guru, Mr/ Ms [name] , to please come on the stage and say a few words to guide us. Thank you.

After the speech

“Thank you, Sir/ Ma’am. Your words always inspire and encourage us to dream big and never stop chasing them. Thank you. Everyone, please give him/ her a huge round of applause. Thank you.”

“Dancing is surely the most basic and relevant of all forms of expression. Nothing else can so effectively give outward form to an inner experience.” – Lyall Watson

“It is now time for us to enjoy the performances that our talented dancers have so meticulously prepared for. So, let me invite on the stage our first act of the day/ night, our youngest dancers, 6-year-old [name 1] and 7-year-old [name 2]. Please welcome them with a huge round of applause.”

After the performance

“That was incredible! Oh my God! [Name 1 and name 2], your both are brilliant. We are so proud of you! Thank you for such a beautiful performance. Everyone, please give them a huge round of applause.”

For the next performance

“Indian classical dance is sustained by a profound philosophy. The form seeks to merge with the formless, motions seek to become a part of the motionless, and the dancing individual seeks to become one with the eternal dance of the cosmos.” – Nita Ambani

“Indeed, Indian classical dance is about so much more than just moves. Traditionally, many of our classical dances were performed as a form of religious storytelling, showing scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata. Honouring that, today, our Bharatnatyam dancers will perform Shri Krishna Leela. Please put your hands together for our talented dancers – [names].”

“What a graceful performance! It was so beautiful that I started to tear up! Oh my! Thank you for such a brilliant performance. Everyone, please give our talented students a huge round of applause.”

The anchor can similarly welcome different acts on the stage and carry on with the show.
