About Us PRESENTATION CONVENT HR. SEC. SCHOOL
Presentation Convent Hr. Sec. School, Srinagar has a history of 84 glorious years in the field of education. We look back with a sense of gratitude and satisfaction at the enormous contribution this institution has made in the lives of all those who have passed through the portals of their Alma Mater. We now invite you to take a journey down the memory lane as we retrace our steps, to the journey which began in Ireland.
Back Bone Of Your School
The presentation sisters.
The Congregation of Presentation Sisters is a worldwide network of Catholic Religious Organization founded by the valiant and saintly woman- Nano Nagle in 1775, in Ireland. Living up to the legacy left behind by this visionary, the Presentation Sisters respond with compassion to the needs of those made poor and challenge the unjust structures, which threaten the dignity of the human persons. Today the Presentation Sisters and associates work in five continents across the globe and follow in the footsteps of Nano Nagle in promoting the rights and dignity of human persons. We are involved in a variety of ministries like education, holistic health, spirituality, faith formation, social, pastoral, legal consultancy, counseling, etc.
Today Presentation presence can be felt not only in the cities but also in the remote villages of India as well as other countries. We strive to keep the flame of Nano’s lantern burning bright by reaching out and touching the hearts of human persons, offering them support and a resolve to live with dignity and honour. We take up issues like human rights violations, protection of child right, exploitation of natural resources and gender discrimination. Our NGO status in the UN enables us to use the means of advocacy and lobbying to represent these issues effectively.
BEGINNING OF PRESENTATION CONVENT HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL
Maharaja Harisingh, the last ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir required a distinguished school for the children of his subjects. So he requested the Head of the Church in Kashmir to request the Presentation Sisters of Rawalpindi to open a school in Srinagar. For this purpose the Maharaja allotted 10 acres of land on the banks of the pristine river Jhelum on lease. The founding members of Presentation Convent School, Srinagar were Mother Peter Conway, Mother Sacred Heart, Mother Annunciata and Mother Xavier. After receiving the invitation, the Sisters travelled from Rawalpindi via Uri and reached Kashmir after the journey of three days. On reaching Kashmir, the sisters rented a house on the banks of the Dal Lake at Boulevard and started their school on 17th March 1936. Most of the students were foreigners then mainly the children of British families living in Srinagar.
A few students from distinguished families were also admitted. The school had boarding facility in the initial years, which was discontinued later. While they stayed in the rented house in Boulevard and conducted classes there for the students, the actual building was being constructed at Rajbagh. The official functioning of school in Rajbagh began on 15th June, 1939. The cost of starting the first school and constructing the second school and the convent was borne by the government. The school was co-ed until 1977. We were granted recognition for B.A degrees for women but the college department was closed down in 1947 after the partition of India. The Govt. College for women was opened thereafter in a former palace building on the hotel road, later renamed as Maulana Azad Road. Unfortunately a devastating fire on 12th January 1965 completely destroyed the school building and the second storey of the house. The first storey and the impressive clock tower remained to tell the tale.
OUR PRESENCE TODAY
Located on the banks of the Jhelum river and surrounded by the lofty mountains, mighty oaks and majestic chinar trees, this temple of learning can boast of wonderful infrastructure and sprawling lush green grounds. The magnificent and enchanting clock tower still stands tall shrouded in mystery. Our school without doubt is a jewel in the crown of Kashmir valley and in a unique way it adds to the beauty of this paradise on earth. From the portals of this temple of learning have walked out thousands of young girls who have proved their mettle as they carved a niche for themselves in diverse fields within and outside the country. The school has successfully reached 84 years of excellence. From its modest beginnings in 1936, it has grown and spread its branches much like the awe-inspiring oak trees in the campus. The school celebrated its silver jubilee in 1961. The bicentenary of the death of Nano Nagle – the Foundress of Presentation Sisters was celebrated in 1984. The school crossed another mile stone when it celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1986. The classical movie, ‘The Sound of Music’ was performed on stage by our students at Tagore Hall to mark the occasion. It was a mega success and it was appreciated by one and all. A school magazine was published on this occasion in which Dr. Karan Singh wrote, “I have the happiest recollections of my association with this school several decades ago when Mother Peter was the principal. In my autobiography ‘Heir apparent’, I have recorded how much I enjoyed going to this school and many years later my daughter Jyotsana also studied there.”
TERCENTENARY YEAR OF THE BIRTH OF VEN.NANO NAGLE-2018
Due to political situation of Kashmir from floods to social disruption of various types school was unable to involve students in other activities besides limiting them to bookish knowledge. Tercentenary year of the birth of Nano Nagle gave us another opportunity to involve students in exhibiting their talents in the form of an open day where Mrs. Mathoora Masoom KAS, Director, Department of Floriculture who is an alumni of the school graced the occasion as chief guest. Sr. Regi O Joseph inspired the staff and students to make a difference by taking this step of presenting an annual day differently. The open day itself was with a difference that every class was a venue for the variety entertainment programs beginning with a skit on Nano Nagle, titled -“The pilgrim path’’- which not only made everyone think differently but also pause for a while to make a shift in their attitude towards life, power, positions and money. Parents were touched by the variety of programs put up by their wards. It showcased students’ creativity, organizational skills, their giftedness, their ability to dream and work in a team towards achieving their dreams as well. Their self-confidence and passion for life was displayed in the street play where light was thrown on women empowerment, honouring girl child and gender equality. Demonstrations of working models, projects on save Dal lake, exhibitions of art and craft of Kashmir, graphic designing, debates and panel discussions on current affairs such as global warming, home-work a boon or a bane gave the students a platform to express their creativity and build up their self-confidence and leadership qualities. The issue of global warming created awareness on our contribution to the world changing scenario which is frightening as well as thought provoking. Healthy food and food habits together with a healthy life style with practice of Teikawando for self- defense made an impact on parents helping them to make a choice for a stress free life .The Lady with the lantern was seen moving around urging the audience to take one pace beyond by becoming partners with us in education, enlightenment and empowerment of one another and together making a difference in the world. Of-course, “we are the world, we are the people to make a difference in the world’’ resounded from all corners of the school in different voices. I am sure Nano would have been happy to see her lantern being carried on centuries after her life. Time and seasons move on as they will, imprinting on history the marks it has made on humans. In a world that seeks self -importance with might as right, we were challenged today to gamble our time and energy for love and to partner with others in ushering a new era where hatred will give way to compassionate love. Only when we are able to harness for God the energies of love we can become agents of transformation. Let us be the change we want to see in the world today. ……So let us take down our lantern…..for the world needs us.
We, at Presentation Convent Hr. Sec. School, Srinagar strive to create an internationally acclaimed institution whose foundation rests on the pillars of human values of truth, justice, equality and harmony in a collaborative environment. We aim at nurturing and empowering each student to discover the light within to realize her true potential by working in tandem with the Sustainable Development Goals for a better tomorrow. We believe in simple living and high thinking to meet the challenges of life with optimism, shared responsibility, life-long learning, sense of dynamism and deep rooted relationships leading to positivity and constructive transformation.
Our mission is to uphold the motto of our school ‘virtue and labour’ by providing value based quality education to the students, igniting their creativity and imagination, promoting life skills of critical thinking, problem solving and fostering in them love for nature. We encourage a spirit of tolerance, respect for one another and inclusiveness for global citizenship and holistic approach to life, leading to excellence with humility to serve the society as an exemplary citizen.
VEN. NANO NAGLE – THE LADY OF THE LANTERN
Nano Nagle – the Lady of the lantern, a woman who pioneered Catholic education in Ireland was born to very wealthy parents in 1718. This was a period in Irish history when the English imposed the oppressive Penal Laws, which severely limited the Irish people. It was a crime of treason to educate the Irish and it was forbidden to practice the Roman Catholic faith. Therefore, Nano had to leave the country and go to France to be educated. On her return to Ireland, the sight of the people who lived in appalling poverty, oppression and degradation deeply distressed Nano. Soon she set about alleviating the misery and improving the lot of the poor of Ireland. Nano knew that without education there could be no permanent change possible in the society. Realizing also that the Irish were deprived of both faith and education, at great personal risk, Nano opened her first hedge school in 1754 with an enrolment of 35 girls. Soon she had seven schools in and around Cork city. In this way she took a stand against some of the injustices of her time. Nano educated the poor children during the day, visited and nursed the sick and the suffering at night carrying a lantern. This lantern became a symbol of the Presentation Sisters throughout the world. In order to carry on the great task began by her, Nano founded the Presentation Congregation in 1775. After having spent her life in service of the poor and the downtrodden, Nano Nagle, the trailblazer went to her eternal reward on 26th April 1784. It is to be mentioned here that in the year 2005, Nano Nagle was voted as Ireland’s greatest woman of the millennium for her contribution in the field of education and in particular for pioneering girls’ education in Ireland. Nano’s spirit of selflessness, her undaunted spirit, her determination in the face of persecution, her struggle for justice, her devotion to the poor and her particular love for the children have become a source of inspiration for all the Presentation Sisters all over the world.
PLATINUM JUBILEE – 2011
The year 2011 was a land mark in the history of PCHSS, celebrating 75 years of unwavering devotion and commitment of all the sisters and staff members who have worked tirelessly for the cause of education in the valley. On this momentous occasion, a musical extravaganza“ Annie” was performed by the students under the able guidance of Mr. George Puliankala and his team. On 27th July, Mr. Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister, Jammu & Kashmir was the Chief Guest along with many other VIP’s forming the line of Guests of Honor His Excellency Mr. N.N Vohra, Governor, Jammu & Kashmir and Most Rev. Dr. Peter Celestine, Bishop of Jammu Srinagar Diocese. Sr. Jyoti, the Principal of school expressed her gratitude for all those who have gone before us on whose shoulders we stand and all the students who participated, audience and well-wishers for their supportive presence.
225th DEATH ANNIVERSARY OF NANO NAGLE
On 8th and 9th September 2009, the 225th death anniversary of Nano Nagle was celebrated in a grand manner. On the 8th Mr. Omar Abdullah, the honourable Chief Minister of J & K State was the chief guest. He inaugurated the newly constructed Nagle Block on the same day. The building was blessed by Rev. Dr.Peter Celestine, Bishop of Jammu, Srinagar diocese. On the 9th Mr. Peerzada, the honourable minister for Education was the chief guest. All the students from class I to IX participated in the two days’ cultural programme and the parents of all the students were invited to witness the performance of their wards. The parents were enthralled and spellbound by the excellent performance of their children. The commencement of higher secondary was a long cherished dream come true for all of us. The First batch of class XI students were given admission in December 2009.

Kashmir is renowned for its beauty all over the world. “If there be a paradise on earth it is here, it is here, it is here”. Emperor Jahangir
The Presentation Sisters came to Srinagar, Kashmir from Rawalpindi in 1936 as the Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir had requested Monsignor O’Donoghue that he wanted the Sisters to open a school in Kashmir.Monsignor O’Donoghue requested Mother Peter Conway and she agreed to send Sisters to Kashmir. Rev Mother Peter Conway, then Mother Superior of Presentation Convent Rawalpindi accepted the offer in consultation with other Sisters in Punjab.
Thus, the first Presentation Convent was opened with four noble pioneers Mother Peter Conway, Mother Annunciata, Mother Sacred Heart Kavanagh and Mother Xavier.
As the number of students increased, more accommodation and facilities became necessary. The Sisters requested the Maharaja to allot sufficient land to them for this project. He was very gracious, so he leased a large plot of land, centrally placed on the banks of the river Jhelum. A beautiful school building was constructed on the spacious grounds in 1939. Gradually the number of students increased, and the school began to flourish to celebrate its Golden Jubilee in 1986. The Sisters from most of the Communities in the Province were present on the occasion, along with Sr Christopher our Provincial.
Kashmir, the peaceful valley came under the threat of militancy from the year 1989 which paralysed the normal life of the people since then.
Keeping in mind the constant request from the parents and realising the need of the time, the Community decided to upgrade the present school from class 10 to 12 in 2009.
In 2011 the Platinum Jubilee of the School was celebrated in a very grand manner.
In September 2014 a heavy flood marooned Kashmir valley. The Sisters experienced the powerful Providence and care of our loving God who helped them to face this calamity courageously without losing heart.
The mission has been very challenging as Kashmir is a conflict zone and there are frequent disruptions to normal life due to curfew and stone-pelting. Yet the Sisters have undauntedly ministered to the people of Kashmir for the past 84 years.

It was the dream of the Indian Unit from the year 2012, to look for a suitable property in order to expand the Presentation Presence in the State of Madhya Pradesh and to have a supportive community to the existing Novitiate Community at Gondermau, Gandhi Nagar, Bhopal.
The former Unit Leader Sr Lizzy Mathew and her Team, along with the Novitiate community identified a piece of land located in a village called Pachama in Sehore District which is one of the fast-developing areas of the State. It is about 30 kilometers away from the Novitiate House, Bhopal. The literacy rate of Sehore is 71% and is in great need of education, which was expressed by the local people of the area.
A house was bought and blessed for the Sisters to stay at Sheetal Vihar. Sisters Alice Mulackal and Maria Thomas were missioned as pioneers, to form a new community at Sehore in June 2016. It was decided that this community be the extended community of Jammu Presentation Community.
The Sisters involved themselves in the Parish activities such as conducting catechism classes and preparing the children for the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation and praying with the Catholic families in the Parish etc.
Gradually, the Sisters’ residence and Nano Nagle Kindergarten – Pre Primary School was built and blessed by Archbishop of Bhopal Rt Rev Leo Cornelio on the occasion of 300 th Birth Anniversary of Nano Nagle on 26 April 2020. Sr Miriam, and some of our Sisters from Jammu and Bhopal were present for the occasion.
After much struggle and perseverance, the Sisters are hoping to get the school recognised soon.

The journey of Rohtak mission goes back to 4 Sept 1978. It was the result of the combined efforts of the Arch-dioceses of Mumbai and Delhi, Canossian Sisters, Jesus and Mary Congregation. Both the Dioceses shared their personnel and finances for the Mission. The seven of them formed one team and tried to live like the first Christian community, sharing their life of prayer and work. The aim of Rohtak mission was evangelisation through a simple and non-structured way of life and by being a ‘presence’ among the poor people.
Srs Stella D’Souza and Regina Panachipuram joined the Rohtak team on 18 September 1979. An Inter-Congregational Community with Sisters from three different Congregations living together, in the same community, was very joyful and challenging.
The Presentation Sisters were blessed to have a house built by the Diocese of Delhi 27 December 1984.
From 1985-1992, the team kept themselves busy with Balwadies, Coaching classes, adult education, tailoring classes in slums, villages and instruction in local government schools. In the meantime, the Sisters of the other Congregations left for good.
A devastating flood took place in Rohtak in September 1995 due to heavy rains and the failure of the drainage system. Fifty villages were totally marooned and about forty people lost their lives. The Catholic Church in Rohtak took an active part in the relief work. Having got financial assistance from “Caritas India”, all the religious working here, reached out to the people with compassion.
In October 1996 the Sisters started with Prison ministry, working with other NGOs, working for the non-formal education among Scheduled Castes. They started a little school in Kartarpura and Indira Colony for the children from Nursery to class I. In September 1998, they extended their services to include training courses in Beauty Care and Tailoring, for the local young women.
On 13 November 2004 they celebrated 25 years of Presentation Presence in Rohtak. The last twenty years had seen a lot of changes taking place in Rohtak. This was the time when they felt the need to register themselves as a society if they were to continue the good work they were doing. Therefore, on 17 April 2006 “Presentation Society, Rohtak” was formed.
The beautiful new home in Indira Colony was blessed and inaugurated on 17 November 2014. On 18 September 2019, the Presentation Sisters completed forty years of their presence in Rohtak Mission. The Sisters continue to serve the poorest of the poor through education and social ministry.

The year 1998 is very significant in the History of the Presentation Sisters in India – one Unit with four Circles. From 1976 onwards, the PBVMs in India remained as one Province in the Union group. One among many reasons for restructuring was that, it was difficult to administer this Unit which was spread across the country from Kashmir to Kanyakumari; hence the need for restructuring became imperative. The communities in the North are in the following states: Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Bihar and Jharkhand and they formed the North Circle of the Indian Unit of the Presentation Sisters.
The newly formed North Circle did not have a house in which to function. The new Circle Team with Sr Margaret George as the Circle Animator and Srs Ida Ferrao, Phyllis Pulickal and Dorothy Fernandes as Team members, began to function from Delhi 6. A house was rented and was given the suitable name as PRERNALAYA. It is a Hindi word which means ‘House of Inspiration.’ The official opening of PRERNALAYA house (Rented) took place on 12 January 1999.
The Leadership was on the lookout for a new administrative house and after a long search, the long-awaited dream came true on 25 August 1999 – a house at A- 49, Priyadarshini Vihar, Delhi-110092 was purchased.
In 2015, the bifurcation of the Province took place and the one Unit with Four Circles became two autonomous Units known as North India Unit and South India Unit. From 1 June 2015, the Circle house was made into a hospitality house with its main mission as hospitality, prayer and presence.
The Sisters at present cater to the Parish community with family visits as their main mission specially seeking out the poor and the needy for empowerment through education and prayer. There are Sisters teaching at Delhi -6 Presentation Convent School.

St Mary’s Presentation Convent Jammu, under the patronage of our Lady of Good Counsel, lies at the foothills of the Himalayas. When Sr Patricia Kelly of Presentation Convent Srinagar, passed through Jammu on her way to Delhi in 1951, she met a few Catholic men at the bus stop who requested her to hear their confession! On reaching Delhi, she visited the Archbishop S. Mulligan O.F.M. Cap, and explained the situation in Jammu. The military and the local Christian community requested Mother Peter Conway, the Superior of Srinagar to open a school in Jammu city.
On 12 April 1954, St Mary’s Presentation Convent School was opened with 170 children on rolls.
St Mary’s Presentation Convent School celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1979, the Golden Jubilee in 2004 and the Diamond Jubilee in 2014 of Presentation presence and their Services for 2400 pupil. May the Spirit of our Venerable Nano Nagle continue to share God’s compassionate love for the people of Jammu through the school and social ministry.
Bishop Telesphore invited the Presentation Sisters to Dumka Diocese, Jharkhand. After many visits and dialogue, the four pioneers, Srs Philomena Doss, Vilhete Carvalho, Jessy Lobo and Selma George arrived in Dumka in mid May 1990. The Sisters took time to learn the local language ‘Santali’. The two Sisters were assigned to Cilimpur and resided with the Sisters of Charity. Another two Sisters stayed with the Jesuits at Hathimara and Deopu, for practical experience of learning the culture and language of the people.

Sr Dorothy Fernandes began the collaborative work with Patna Province Jesuits to teach social justice and women empowerment at the Regional Pastoral Centre, Navjyoti Niketan on 16 June 1997. It was a joint mission of Jesuits, Ursuline Sisters, Notre Dame Sisters and Presentation Sisters. After accomplishing the term office with the Jesuits, she continues to stay on in Patna at the service of people at the periphery as she was moved by the struggles of the people in the slums (urban poor) of Patna.
In January 2010, Nano Gyan Niketan School was inaugurated by Archbishop William D’Souza. Sr Dorothy got elected on the Unit leadership Team in February 2010. She found it difficult to hold the activism of the rural and urban issues and to be true to the mandate of the Sisters. Yet she was able to balance both the responsibilities with the strength of her staff from ‘Aashray Abhiyan’ and continued to serve those made poor.
Dorothy was awarded by PAGC Foundation, as an unsung hero in the field of education, in March 2020.
Dorothy and her team were busy reaching out to people who were hungry due to Covid. Later in the year, Dorothy was awarded a certificate by the Patna Municipal Corporation Commissioner for her selfless service to the urban poor during the Covid period. She continues to work for the people at the margins of society, to get houses, education, providing awareness and acquiring social security schemes from the government.

The people of Jiajor village awaited the arrival of the Sisters and they were given a warm welcome on Sunday 24 February 1991. They lived in a very small house known as “Match box house” and moved around the villages with our traditional sari and habit. Life in the community was more joyful, though at times, it was tough.
March 1998, a new school building was blessed by Fr Dungdung. The villages, being far away, meant the children had to walk miles to reach school. Moreover, the children from remote villages were not getting the opportunity to come to the school. Therefore, the Sisters decided to start the hostel for girls from June 2000.
Jiajor Parish was administered by the Franciscan Friars of the third Order Regular (TOR) and the school, run by the Presentation Sisters for 20 years, was handed over to Dumka Diocese on 1 June 2003. The school, from a small beginning of 55 students in a remote place, has 560 students today.
The Sisters celebrated 25 years of blessings with joy and gratitude on 24 February 2016. It was indeed a day of joy for the people of Jiajor Parish and the Presentation Sisters.
The existing infrastructures for the boarders were not really sufficient, hence in 2018 there was a new construction of a dining hall and kitchen, funded by the Diocese of Rottenburg Germany, Irish Embassy Delhi and Nano Nagle Solidarity fund.
Besides the education ministry, the Sisters are also involved in vocational training programmes, SDGs and health activities.

A primary school that was run by O.F.M fell into debt and faced closure in 1939. Archbishop Sylvester Mulligan, Cap, invited the Presentation Sisters of Rawalpindi to take over the management of the school. Three sisters were deputed from Presentation Convent, Rawalpindi in 1936. They were Mother Gabriel Monks from Dublin, Sr Augustine McGuirk from Northern Ireland and Sr Michael Murray from Cork City. They arrived in 1939 and stayed with the Franciscan Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament at Paharganj.
On 8 December 1939, the school and the residential quarters were officially handed over to the Sisters and Mother Gabriel became its first principal.
The Presentation Senior Secondary School at Delhi-6 began as St Therese’s High School in 1924. Initially it catered to both boys and girls of the Northern Railway employees who were either Europeans or Anglo-Indians. Started with 13 pupils in a tent, the school was raised to a middle school and was recognised by the government in 1926 and gradually upgraded to Senior Secondary School.
The school community celebrated its Diamond and Platinum Jubilees of Presentation Presence and continued to celebrate through the year with a deep sense of joy and gratitude.
The Presentation Convent Senior Secondary School Delhi today, has 2600 students. It’s the 5th oldest School in Delhi. It is amongst the first schools in India to receive ISO Certification for Quality Management Systems and Environment Management System, simultaneously. The School functions as an agent of social transformation by imparting value education, building responsible citizenship with dignity, inculcating compassion for the poor and empowerment of the girl child.

The Govt. College for women was opened thereafter in a former palace building on the hotel road.

Sr. Regi Joseph
To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics; to appreciate beauty; to give of one’s self, to leave the world better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived-that is to have succeeded - Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Convent Education in India, Pros, Cons and Fond Memories
Table of contents, what is convent education, the religious and social connect, is convent education slipping, convent characteristics.
Hushed silence during assembly, skirts at knee length. Wishing the teacher a ‘good morning’ even if the encounter was not in class or standing with hands behind the back while talking to her. Using please and thank you at all times or being corrected for interchangeably using ‘can’ with ‘may’. Yes, these and more are memories of convent schools. Buildings with corridors and a chapel. A statue of Mother Mary and a basketball court.
Sisters or Fathers taking unexpected tours of classrooms and of course, the strict closing of the school gate during classes. Convent schools are a league of their own and have a distinct character that is unlike any other school or educational institution.
A convent is defined as a ‘community of priests, religious brothers, religious sisters, monks or nuns living together under monastic vows. However, convent schooling though based on this foundation includes much more. Anyone who is convent educated would know that convent education has always been one of the most sought after in our country. The standard and values imparted in convent schools were for a long time deemed as one of the best though in recent years the quality of convent education has been on a slight decline.
Yet, when one thinks of convent education several typical approximations come to mind. And hence there is a distinguished difference between English medium schools, private schools, state schools, and convent institutes. Each has its flavor, its peculiarities that make them stand out from others.
Off late a lot of schools have names that sound like a convent-based education system but in reality, are not. For example, a few schools have been named after Saints though they are not run by nuns or priests. These are in fact, either Christian schools or sometimes private schools capitalizing on their names as convents.
So which schools or institutions can be categorized as convents? Just as its definition, convent institutions are run by religious sisters or brothers and usually headed by a superior. There is a religious element seen in various ways, such as the Catholics and Christians have a Catechism period. During the religious classes, the other children attend moral science or moral value classes. Hymns are sung and Christmas and Easter are celebrated with much enthusiasm.
However, besides these very basic religious nuances, convent schools are in fact, very secular. Most of them are government aided and hence a mixed crowd of students, hailing from different cultures, social strata, and religions come together to study and learn.
Yet, a few recent incidents as reported in the media do point fingers at how convent schools are trying to convert teachers and students. These charges have been vehemently denied by the convent institutions. Of course, in convent schools, the morning prayers begin with a hymn or prayer to the Lord. Yes, students learn carols and often take part in the Nativity plays too. However, one cannot take away the fact that these manifestations of religious fervor are rarely harmful.
Most often these are a great way for non-Christians to observe and understand a culture that they might not be familiar with. Having said that, other festivals are also celebrated in convent schools, there are cross religion references, and children are encouraged to learn and adapt to the national and regional influences. I say this because I remember with complete clarity how an Irish nun who happened to be our Principal in school, took pains to teach us the right pronunciations of the Indian National Anthem.
I remember how every morning during assembly, she stood resolutely on the mike and made us all recite one line after the other to get the diction of each Sanskrit word right.
There are also myriad other things that make convent schools just more than religious sentiment. Religious values help in social upliftment too. For example, a lot of convents believe in admitting children from underprivileged homes.
Even though they might restrict it to a certain community, at least these children get a chance to go to a regular school which otherwise would be out of their reach. Also, in many schools, including mine, there was a shelter for children, where they lived and were educated. We from regular classes would take turns to teach these children too.
With several educational institutions rising in cities the charm and attraction of convent education are decidedly slipping. Around a decade or two back, convent institutions were coveted. It was the hallmark of great literacy, as well as value education. I look back and proudly say that I am convent educated. The nuns that headed our institution were stern, but they helped shape the personalities of hundreds of students. Whether it was the all-boys or all-girls schools, the quality of education was top notch. The teachers were efficient, the system worked smoothly. However, most importantly, education was not centered on scores and marks alone. There was an immense emphasis on character building too.
Then why is convent education finding it hard to retain its hold in recent times? There are different reasons and perhaps they are all true. The fact that convents have always liked to stick to the protocol could be one. In such dynamic times, it is imperative to keep pace with technology. Many convent schools have held onto the past teaching methods a tad bit too late.
Also, the quality of faculty can be cited as a valid reason. The Irish and Indian nuns of the past had authority and character that perhaps is hard to match by the current heads and members of faculty. Also, changing times not only limit the use of technology but also a different approach in handling and managing students. The relationship between students and teachers has also changed with kids more exposed to concepts and ideas than they were earlier.
The clashes with strict authority and rules besides the stringent measures of boundaries and regulations have made parents and students prefer private educational institutions as they happen to be more flexible.
The questions of authority and rules are however debatable. One would not want to increase intelligence at the cost of behavior. But again, a generalization is perhaps not the answer here. Not all convent institutions are going downhill. And institutions are but a product of the people that run and manage them.
Whether it is the late marking in the diary even if late by a few minutes or sudden bag checking to see if there were no objectionable items are nostalgic memories that I carry from my school. Moral value classes seemed unnecessary to us, but today I cannot help being thankful for them. The fact that an entire period was dedicated to imbibing values is something that we can carry forward in our times today. And then there were the arts. A dancing period where I was hopelessly taught classical dance moves. The singing period in the hall where stood a large piano on which sat our singing teacher humming in her soft voice. The SUPW period where we learned stitching and crafting. Again, a lot of critics point it out as submissive learning for women alone, but I do disagree here. Learning how to embroider is not an anti-feminist act. Especially, when we were also taught basketball, kho kho, and other male-dominated sports as well!
Perhaps it is my convent education, that even if today I happen to bump into a teacher, the first thing I would do is wish for her. Wishing her good morning or afternoon not out of force or compulsion. But with genuine respect for starting a conversation. We don’t put our legs on tables let alone the cross boards under them. We respect the value of community service, of organizing fates and newspaper drives. We still believe in jumble sales and the importance of polishing our shoes. Grammar was important, etiquette even more.
But all in all, convent education with all its pros and cons has etched a mark on the education system in India. With all its distinctions and drawbacks, those who have studied and passed out from these institutions, continue to remember them fondly and with a lot of respect and dignity. At least, I do, and that perhaps is an important standard of its impact on the lives of its students.

Well written..took me back to my school days. Really appreciate your views about convent education. I totally agree with you regarding the discipline and etiquette we got embedded in us deeply due to all the strict standards of our schools. Kudos
Thanks Kalpana!
What about the anti-Hindu policy and behaviour of these convent schools, and Irish nuns? Is that communal, or no? Is it just ‘communal’ when Hindus do something that could be interpreted as anti-minority?
India in the 19th century and first 2 or 3 decades of the 20th century, probably needed that push and shove into the modern era. The convent schools, Irish nuns and friars were part of the modernisation that India undertook in those times. It can be said to have been both progressive and necessary.
But to rely on convent schools and Irish nuns in this day and age, the 3rd decade of the 21st century, is absolutely pathetic and disgusting. India should have grown by now. And besides which, stories are coming to light about these schools and their not so secular behaviour. You cannot be anti-Hindu in India. You shouldn’t be anti-Hindu in any country, but to do it in India is absolutely revolting.
Gratitude is an important value. This nice piece reflects that value. I owe a debt of gratitude to my initial convent schooling. Many of your reminiscences recall my own school days, when we were taught by Irish brothers. These are fraught times when the best intentions are suspected. This too shall pass.
Thank you N.V. Sir for your views!
