In many countries, people do not recycle their rubbish as much as they could. Why do you think this is? What can be done to change this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer :

It is quite significant to recycle the waste product in an environment friendly manner, yet many  countries fail to do the same. There are several reasons why people do not focus on recycling and proper steps should be taken to change such a scenario.

First of all, most people do not understand the need and importance of recycling. They are ignorant of the process of recycling and are least bothered to know where and how their garbage is being disposed. Moreover, most people are so busy in their own lives that they do not have the  time to act responsibly and take care of such things. To cap it all, in many countries even government does not try to bring an improvement so that the recycling can be done on a larger scale. In a recent survey; conducted by the Times magazine of India, it was observed that 8 out of 10 people do not really know about the significance of recycling .

To combat the above problem, lots of steps can be taken. Government should try and create forums where people can be educated about the significance of recycling. A chapter related to this topic should be included in the school curriculum so that citizens become responsible at an early age. Government can also start some programmes so that the rubbish can be recycled at a larger scale and the environment is made clean.  For example, The new Prime minister of India Mr Narendra Modi initialized a programme named “Swach Bharat Abhiyan”, which means clean India. This programme focuses on keeping the country clean and propagates the need of recycling the rubbish products. Now, various societies are setting up collection processes so that most of the waste products are recycled in an eco friendly manner.

In conclusion, it can be said that with increasing population all over the world , waste management is an important process and every country should try to maximize the recycling of rubbish.

IELTS Writing Task 2 – Recycle – Band 9

IELTS Task 2 Writing

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement. To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Write at least 250 words. (waste = rubbish, garbage, trash)

Certain individuals argue that there is a lack of home rubbish being recycled in the public and that the only remedy for this is to implement national regulations and fines. To what degree do you believe that people’s recycling and disposal habits need to be managed by government law?

TOPIC = Maximizing recycling in the home

Controlling idea = the requirements, especially government regulation to achieve maximizing recycling at home

What does it mean to maximize recycling in the home?

A: To reuse, reduce and recycle waste thereby minimizing the number of materials that end up in landfills. 

Why would we want to minimize domestic garbage?

A: To preserver resources and protect the environment and ultimately to ensure our way of life and survival. 

How can we achieve this goal of minimizing waste and maximizing recycling in the home?

A: raising awareness, government regulations and fines, taking responsibility for ourselves and others. 

CONTROLLING IDEA: 

Why may it be necessary for society to implement government regulation to maximize recycling in the home?

Because many people are irresponsible and their actions impacts all of society negatively

To create a standard structure of expectation for recycling

People are more likely to recycle

Why not just give people a chance to learn from school, tv, social media and come to their own realization that maximizing recycling is important?”

Society is running out of time to learn slowly – it needs to be done fast

*Keep in mind “universal constraints and needs of humanity” when you are thinking about your thesis points for persuasive essays – task 2 – *Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

THESIS: I strongly believe that government regulations are required to force people to increase their domestic recycling habits because of irresponsibility and time. 

INTRODUCTION 

(Hook) Recycling household waste is expected in society. (Background) People need to reuse, reduce and recycle their domestic rubbish not only to protect the environment but also to ensure the future prosperity of humankind. (THESIS) I strongly believe that government regulations are required to force people to increase their domestic recycling habits because of irresponsibility and time.

BODY 1 – Topic sentence – What should it include? Define the need of laws to manage irresponsibility of recycling.

Since many individuals neglect their duty to recycle a lot of rubbish, government laws are need to force them to act in the interest of themselves, the public and the planet. (Explain this – use quantitative language) Frequently, people around the world throw plastic bottles, tin cans, and glass containers into their general rubbish which should otherwise be separated into recycling bins, and authorities can make this an obligation by imposing strict, 1000-dollar fines, for those who do not separate their recyclables appropriately. (Specific example) In my neighborhood, I have seen recycling increase threefold since the Canadian government established strict laws for residents that do not recycle their waste. (Connecting sentence) This is one of two reasons that governments must regulate domestic recycling.

BODY 2 – topic 🡪 government regulation is needed because people are out of time. 

Our planet cannot cope with the rate of pollution generated by humanity and societies are running out of time to save the environment so government intervention is needed to speed up the process. (E) The rate of land, water and air pollution is extensive and is causing global warming and land, air and water pollution is rapidly increasing leading to global warming and the death of flora and fauna. Without putting a quick stop to this process the planet, and humanity along with it, suffers and dies in a matter of decades, and it is up to elected authorities to curtail this phenomena with heavy fines and consequences for those households which contribute to this problem. Example – Due to the contribution of the increased consumption and waste of domestic waste, global temperature has risen by over 1 degrees average in the last year; at this rate, humanity cannot survive another half century. When governments regulate this behavior with 1000-dollar fines they force people to change their habits within a matter of weeks rather than years. 

CONCLUSION 

In conclusion, many people do not care enough about recycling and the planet is simply running out of time for humans to recycle sufficiently. Therefore, I strongly support the idea of government regulation to increase domestic recycling practices. In the end, it is better to force people to pay a fine now than to pay with their lives later in a world which can no longer sustain life.

Band 9 Essay Sample | Should Recycling Be Made A Legal Requirement?

Here is a band 9 essay sample on a topic that appeared in a recently held IELTS exam.

Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for governments to make it a legal requirement. To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

There are people who believe that recycling can be encouraged / promoted by making it a legal requirement. I agree with this view to a certain extent. In my opinion, laws may help but creating adequate facilities for recycling is more important than enacting laws.

Many people are aware of the benefits of recycling; yet they prefer to dump their domestic waste on the streets or in landfills. Garbage is piling up in many cities across the world. It is the breeding ground of fleas and mosquitoes that spread diseases. If all families start the practice of recycling at least the wet garbage they produce, our cities and streets will be a whole lot cleaner and healthier.

If recycling is made a legal requirement more and more people will definitely adopt that practice. There are certainly some people who will act only if they are bound by the law. There are also many people who do not require any laws. They only need access to recycling facilities. Therefore, in my opinion, before enacting a law, the government must build recycling units in all towns and villages. If people have easy access to recycling facilities, they have no reason to throw waste around. Actually, if we make a thorough analysis of this problem we can see that in many cities where garbage is a big problem, there is a dearth of recycling facilities.

The government should also consider offering subsidies to families that want to build biogas plants to recycle their domestic waste. In addition, it can distribute compost bins for free. If there is a law and adequate recycling facilities in place, all people will certainly try to find a better use for their household waste.

To conclude, enacting a law that makes recycling a legal requirement will certainly encourage more people to adopt this practice. However, before enforcing it by law, the government has to ensure that adequate facilities are in place.

Sample Answer

The diagram illustrates numerous stages in the recycling of waste glass bottles.

There are three key stages shown in the diagram, beginning with the collection of the used glass bottles and ending with the delivery of products in new bottles to retail outlets, such as supermarkets.

In the first stage , waste bottles are deposited at collection points, where they are loaded onto trucks for delivery to a glass recycling facility.

The second stage begins with the process of cleaning the bottles with high-pressure water, and they are then separated into a clear, green and brown glass. This is then broken into pieces in the glass factory and passed through a furnace, where they are burned at a temperature of 600 to 800 degrees Celsius. This recycled glass is transformed into liquid form, and it is joined with new liquid glass, ready for moulding into a bottle shape.

In the final stage , the new bottles are used for different products, ready for sale in supermarkets or shops.

Could you please help me know my band for the below essay. Thanks in advance for your help.

The Diagram depicts the information about the waste bottles that undergo various stages in the recycling process. Overall, the process contains three main stages that provides step by step information in each stage.

In the first stage, the waste glass bottles are collected and stored at the collection point. Then the bottles are loaded into the trucks and are sent to the glass factory to begin the process of recycling. In the stage 2, the bottles are cleaned with high-pressure water which will be resulted in three various forms, i.e., brown, green and clear.

These cleaned glasses will be break down into pieces and these broken pieces are then burned in the furnace in between the temperature of 600-800 degrees Celsius. After this process, the new liquid glass and the recycled liquid glass will undergo a Moulding process which transforms a liquid to bottle structure. Finally, in stage three, the newly recycled bottles are given the required brand names and then they are distributed to the supermarkets for sale.

Thank you in advance. Could you please correct me if I made any mistakes. The diagram illustrates the process by which wasted glass bottles are recycled. Overall, It consists of three stages, starting with the input of used glass bottles and ending with the finished product transported to the supermarket for consumption. At the first stage in the process, the used bottles are dispatched to collection points. After that, they are conveyed by the transport vehicle to the recycling facility. In the subsequent stage, the high-pressure water cleans the bottles. Color classification is the next step before breaking it into small glass pieces in the glass factory. Next, the glass cullet is heated in the furnace, where can vary in temperature from 600 to reach 800 degrees Celsius to be transformed into the liquid state. From this, it and new liquid glass are cooled and are formed by the mould. At the last stage, the empty bottles are filled and become a finished product, then distributed to the supermarkets for sale.

I found these videos really helpful. I am a nurse and working in Dubai now. I wrote IELTS 8 times earlier and preparing for 9th attempt. Recently my scores were L-7,R-7,W-6.5 AND S-7. I was getting low scores for speaking all the time.6.5. my writing score were always 7/7.5 .But after improving my speaking skills writing score got low. Could you add a video which explains about the types of essays and some model answers of different types. Thank you somuch

Hello dear you may apply for THE UK NHS because they have reduced point 5 for the writing section you may go to the NMC Website and make sure because they are accepting 7 in 3 sections and 6.5 in writing. Good luck.!

Hi there! Thanks for putting this video up. I used to teach the General Paper for the GCE ‘A’ levels and am now finding out more about teaching writing for IELTS. Based on my background, it seems like your current essay plan answers the question ‘What are the different solutions to encourage recycling’ rather than ‘To what extent are laws required to encourage recycling’. I feel that you have listed the different solutions rather than evaluated HOW FAR laws can work vs other social/ psychological solutions. But of course, I am not familiar with the marking schemes for IELTS writing, perhaps the requirements are different.

Sorry so I guess my purpose for commenting is, whether based on your experience, do IELTS markers pay close attention to these key terms such as ‘How Far’ and ‘To what extent’, or are you not required to evaluate as long as you respond to the topic? Thanks.

Writing Task 2 Sample

IELTS Writing Task 2 ( also known as IELTS Essay Writing ) is the second task of your IELTS Writing test. Here, you will be presented with an essay topic and you will be scored based on your ability to respond to the topic.

You need to write at least 250 words and justify your opinion with arguments, discussion, examples, problem outlining, proposing possible solutions and supporting your position. You will have approximately 40 minutes to finish your Essay Writing. IELTS Writing Task 2 carries more weights than Writing Task 1.

What if you knew there was something you could do every day that’s free, easy to do, and creates jobs while saving money, energy and water? Actually, there is: Recycling! Check out these 5 reasons why we should all be recycling, every chance we get.

1. Recycling keeps trash out of the landfill.

According to the EPA, in the U.S. we are currently able to keep 35 percent of our trash out of landfills and incinerators through recycling and composting. In California, we manage to keep 44 percent of our trash out of the landfill . That’s a good start, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement. It’s important to keep as much material out of the landfill as possible because all items that we produce are made from valuable and limited resources. We want to hang onto as much of it as we can for future use.

2. Recycling reduces our need for new raw materials.

Extracting raw materials from the environment is expensive. It also uses up a lot of water and energy. When we recycle, we extract less, which conserves many of our precious (and finite!) natural resources, including trees, water, oil and metals. The more we recycle, the more we protect our resources!

3. Recycling conserves energy.

Recycling saves a lot of energy. Every year, recyclers across the country save the same amount of energy it would take to power 14 million homes for a full year. That’s the equivalent of turning off the power for one out of every 10 homes for an entire year.

4. Recycling creates jobs.

In the U.S., recycling and reuse activities provide 757,000 jobs and produce $36 billion in wages each year. Choosing to recycle isn’t just good for the environment, it’s good for the economy too.

5. Recycling reduces pollution.

The process of extracting raw materials can produce a lot of pollution. Because more recycling means less extraction, it also means less pollution. Even better, when we recycle more, we send less material to landfills. Material decaying in landfills often emits methane, a greenhouse gas 30 times as potent as carbon dioxide, so the less of that, the better!

How can you recycle correctly?

It’s important to recycle correctly! Items that don’t belong in the recycling can damage sorting machinery, causing expensive delays. Also, when the wrong materials get mixed in with the right ones (known as “contamination” in the recycling world), it reduces the value of other recyclables that were sorted correctly.

  • You will have 8 questions to choose from. You must respond to only 4 of the 8 questions.
  • Each response is limited to a maximum of 350 words.
  • Which questions you choose to answer is entirely up to you. However, you should select questions that are most relevant to your experience and that best reflect your individual circumstances.

Keep in mind

  • All questions are equal. All are given equal consideration in the application review process, which means there is no advantage or disadvantage to choosing certain questions over others.
  • There is no right or wrong way to answer these questions. It’s about getting to know your personality, background, interests and achievements in your own unique voice.  
  • Use the additional comments field if there are issues you'd like to address that you didn't have the opportunity to discuss elsewhere on the application. This shouldn't be an essay, but rather a place to note unusual circumstances or anything that might be unclear in other parts of the application. You may use the additional comments field to note extraordinary circumstances related to COVID-19, if necessary. 

Questions & guidance

Remember, the personal insight questions are just that—personal. Which means you should use our guidance for each question just as a suggestion in case you need help. The important thing is expressing who you are, what matters to you and what you want to share with UC. 

1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time. Things to consider: A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about what you accomplished and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities?

Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church, in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn't necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family? 2. Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side. Things to consider: What does creativity mean to you? Do you have a creative skill that is important to you? What have you been able to do with that skill? If you used creativity to solve a problem, what was your solution? What are the steps you took to solve the problem?

How does your creativity influence your decisions inside or outside the classroom? Does your creativity relate to your major or a future career? 3. What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time? Things to consider: If there is a talent or skill that you're proud of, this is the time to share it.You don't necessarily have to be recognized or have received awards for your talent (although if you did and you want to talk about it, feel free to do so). Why is this talent or skill meaningful to you?

Does the talent come naturally or have you worked hard to develop this skill or talent? Does your talent or skill allow you opportunities in or outside the classroom? If so, what are they and how do they fit into your schedule? 4. Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced. Things to consider: An educational opportunity can be anything that has added value to your educational experience and better prepared you for college. For example, participation in an honors or academic enrichment program, or enrollment in an academy that's geared toward an occupation or a major, or taking advanced courses that interest you; just to name a few.

If you choose to write about educational barriers you've faced, how did you overcome or strive to overcome them? What personal characteristics or skills did you call on to overcome this challenge? How did overcoming this barrier help shape who you are today? 5. Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement? Things to consider: A challenge could be personal, or something you have faced in your community or school. Why was the challenge significant to you? This is a good opportunity to talk about any obstacles you've faced and what you've learned from the experience. Did you have support from someone else or did you handle it alone?

If you're currently working your way through a challenge, what are you doing now, and does that affect different aspects of your life? For example, ask yourself, How has my life changed at home, at my school, with my friends or with my family? 6. Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom. Things to consider:  Many students have a passion for one specific academic subject area, something that they just can't get enough of. If that applies to you, what have you done to further that interest? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had inside and outside the classroom such as volunteer work, internships, employment, summer programs, participation in student organizations and/or clubs and what you have gained from your involvement.

Has your interest in the subject influenced you in choosing a major and/or future career? Have you been able to pursue coursework at a higher level in this subject (honors, AP, IB, college or university work)? Are you inspired to pursue this subject further at UC, and how might you do that?

7. What have you done to make your school or your community a better place? Things to consider: Think of community as a term that can encompass a group, team or a place like your high school, hometown or home. You can define community as you see fit, just make sure you talk about your role in that community. Was there a problem that you wanted to fix in your community?

Why were you inspired to act? What did you learn from your effort? How did your actions benefit others, the wider community or both? Did you work alone or with others to initiate change in your community? 8. Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California? Things to consider:  If there's anything you want us to know about you but didn't find a question or place in the application to tell us, now's your chance. What have you not shared with us that will highlight a skill, talent, challenge or opportunity that you think will help us know you better?

From your point of view, what do you feel makes you an excellent choice for UC? Don't be afraid to brag a little.

Writing tips

Start early..

Give yourself plenty of time for preparation, careful composition and revisions.

Write persuasively.

Making a list of accomplishments, activities, awards or work will lessen the impact of your words. Expand on a topic by using specific, concrete examples to support the points you want to make.

Use “I” statements.

Talk about yourself so that we can get to know your personality, talents, accomplishments and potential for success on a UC campus. Use “I” and “my” statements in your responses.

Proofread and edit.

Although you will not be evaluated on grammar, spelling or sentence structure, you should proofread your work and make sure your writing is clear. Grammatical and spelling errors can be distracting to the reader and get in the way of what you’re trying to communicate.

Solicit feedback.

Your answers should reflect your own ideas and be written by you alone, but others — family, teachers and friends can offer valuable suggestions. Ask advice of whomever you like, but do not plagiarize from sources in print or online and do not use anyone's words, published or unpublished, but your own.

Copy and paste.

Once you are satisfied with your answers, save them in plain text (ASCII) and paste them into the space provided in the application. Proofread once more to make sure no odd characters or line breaks have appeared.

This is one of many pieces of information we consider in reviewing your application. Your responses can only add value to the application. An admission decision will not be based on this section alone.

Get ready to apply for Fall 2024 admission consideration

Applying to the NLP MS Program at UCSC

We’re delighted that you’re interested in applying to UCSC’s unique professional master’s program in natural language processing. The NLP MS program is intended for students who have a considerable background in computer science, and we are looking for multifaceted individuals who ideally have experience with programming, computer science, probability, statistics, and linguistics. We review applications holistically and we have students in the NLP MS program with different undergraduate degrees who are successful in the program.

Below please see a list of recommended courses and requirements that will help you be successful in our program. In your application, you can explain any gaps between your background and the admission guidelines below.

Applicants wishing to study a broader range of computer science topics in a graduate program may wish to consider the MS in Computer Science and Engineering degree program. The program cost varies with the selected curriculum plan. Please check the Registrar’s website for the most recent tuition and fee information.

Admission requirements:

  • A B.A. or B.S in Computer Science or equivalent
  • An overall GPA of 3.0 or better on the 4.0 GPA scale or the equivalent
  • Excellent programming skills either through academic coursework and/or significant professional experience
  • Minimum TOEFL score of 89
  • Minimum IELTS score of 7.0

Essential courses to highlight in your application:

  • A class in Discrete Math (the equivalent of UCSC’s CSE 16: Applied Discrete Mathematics )
  • An advanced class in Data Structures and Algorithms (the equivalent of UCSC’s CSE 101: Introduction to Data Structures and Algorithms )
  • At least one class in Probability and Statistics with a grade of B or better (the equivalent of UCSC’s CSE 107: Probability and Statistics for Engineers or STAT 131: Introduction to Probability Theory )

Desirable (but not required) additional requirements include:

  • A class in NLP or Linguistics (the equivalent of UCSC’s CSE 143: Introduction to Natural Language Processing )
  • A class in Machine Learning (the equivalent of UCSC’s CSE 142: Machine Learning )
  • A class in Formal Languages and Automata Theory (the equivalent of UCSC’s CSE 103: Computational Models )

  • Transcripts: unofficial transcripts are accepted for application purposes but official transcripts may be required if admitted to the program.
  • Letters of Recommendation: 3 letters required from professors and professional contacts who may best speak to your abilities and academic potential in your chosen field of study.

  • IELTS: minimum overall score of 7.0
  • Recommended length is a concise 1-3 pages, single-spaced.
  • UCSC is interested in a diverse and inclusive graduate student population. In the essay, discuss how your personal background informs your decision to pursue a graduate degree.
  • Include any educational, familial, cultural, economic, or social experiences, challenges, or opportunities relevant to your academic journey; how you might contribute to social or cultural diversity within your chosen field; and/or how you might serve educationally underrepresented segments of society with your degree.
  • Recommended length is a concise 2-4 pages, single-spaced.
  • Please describe your plans for graduate study or research and for your future occupation or profession.
  • Include any information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and qualifications for graduate study at UCSC.

NOTE:   GRE   (no minimum) – The GRE requirement has been waived for Fall 2024 admission consideration for NLP MS applications. You are welcome to submit your official scores, but please note the inclusion of your official GRE score will not be a deciding factor for admission.

While a small number of partial fellowship packages are extended to eligible NLP students each year, the NLP Program encourages students to seek external support for covering graduate education expenses. Recipients of these fellowships are selected based on financial need and merit. We strongly recommend eligible applicants complete the optional Statement of Financial Need in the application to be considered for financial support.
