Companies hire people with the right skills and experience.

Unfortunately, not all of us have the perfect work history. But is it still possible to give employers the confidence that you have what it takes to do the job well?

The short answer is yes, by using a skills-based resume. This is a format that puts your abilities first over your experience.

Writing a skills-based resume is about portraying a clear narrative of your ability. You’ll need to show you have the right skill set to succeed.

In this ultimate guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know. Let’s dive in.

What Is a Skills-Based Resume?

The skills-based resume revolves around your skills as opposed to your career growth. This type of resume focuses on specific parts of your work experience that are transferable to the role you’re applying for rather than looking at your overall professional background. It’s also known as the functional resume format.

What Makes a Skills-Based Resume Different?

The purpose of it is to prove you’re a qualified candidate by showcasing your technical skills and competencies. Often because the applicant has gaps in their work history.

This format doubles down on three things:

  • Achievements

Let’s briefly compare it to the other ats resume format .

Skills-Based Resume vs Reverse Chronological Resume

  • The former provides an overview of specific transferable skills and knowledge. In contrast, the latter provides an overview of work history.
  • Skills-based resumes emphasize what you could offer to the company. On the other hand, the reverse chronological resume emphasizes your career timeline.
  • Both are designed to present you as a qualified candidate. The skills-based resume does so by presenting relevant abilities you’ve developed. Whereas, the standard reverse chronological resume does so by highlighting corporate experience.

Skills-Based Resume vs Combination Resume

  • The skills-based resume focuses on your areas of expertise. But, the combination resume has a balanced focus on both skills and experience.
  • Combination resumes are well-rounded. Whereas, skills-based resumes are mostly based on your abilities.

When to Use a Skills-Based Resume

Treat the skills-based format as a last resort. Only use it if you’re in one of the following scenarios:

  • You have no formal work experience
  • You’re making a big career change
  • You have employment gaps
  • Your previous job titles don’t add up

Whichever category you fall into, it’s worth writing a cover letter alongside your resume. Anyhow, we’ll go into each of these scenarios in a bit more detail.

You Have No Formal Work Experience

It’s an option for those of you with how to make a resume with no experience . This usually includes students and recent graduates.

However, you can still position yourself as a qualified candidate. Meet the job description criteria using resume keywords . Then, showcase your knowledge and abilities to give recruiters confidence you have potential.

You’re Making a Big Career Change

Making a career change means moving into a different job or industry.

In this case, you might not have any direct work experience in the new field you’re interested in.

So, it makes sense to use a skills-based resume because it enables you to emphasize the relevant parts of your career background. Unlike listing all of your previous jobs, this approach helps you make an application that’s more how to tailor your resume to a job .

You Have Employment Gaps

An employment gap refers to a period in your career where you were unemployed.

Having nothing to show for during an extended period of time raises questions. So using this format for your resume helps you steer the focus away from your time off by putting most of the spotlight elsewhere.

In this situation though, it’s important to show your skills and knowledge are up-to-date.

Your Previous Job Titles Don’t Add Up

Another way to put it is that you have no direct experience in the job or industry you’re applying for.

If you’ve had a range of different jobs in the past then it might not portray a clear narrative of your growth as a professional. So rather than looking at quantity, focus on quality by going in-depth on the relevant jobs with transferable skills.

How to Showcase Your Ability in a Functional Resume

There’s two main ways to do it:

  • Mention different types of skills and describe how you put them to use via responsibilities or how they were developed
  • Share achievements that demonstrate your expertise

In essence, reflect on your different types of skills and accomplishments. Think about these aspects from both your academic and corporate backgrounds.

Reflect on Different Types of Skills

Here’s a few examples of different types of skills to reflect on:

  • Hard skills: skills directly related to the core job responsibilities.
  • Soft skills: related to interpersonal ability and communication.
  • Transferable skills: skills developed from previous work experience that’s applicable to the role you’re applying to.
  • Leadership skills: your ability to perform as a leader.

These can be listed in the skills section or described under your work experience. Alternatively, describe them under another resume section where it’s appropriate.

Reflect on Your Achievements

Achievements demonstrate excellence. It’s a form of recognition from times you exceeded expectations. Or from times when you completed something which required a level of knowledge and commitment.

Here’s some examples to consider:

  • Awards: formal recognition of your accomplishments when you’ve gone above and beyond.
  • Certifications: documents from companies or institutions stating you’re knowledgeable about a subject.
  • Results: any positive outcomes that were achieved as a result of your own efforts.

How to Write a Skills-Based Resume in 6 Steps

Don’t overexaggerate or write about something that’s ambiguous. Even worse, common mistakes on resumes . Give recruiters the information they’re looking for and present it accurately. If you can’t, then try to find other aspects of your professional background to make up for it.

As you’re going through the steps below, keep the job description and company’s best interests in mind.

1. Complete the Header

The resume header includes contact details using basic personal background information such as:

  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • LinkedIn profile

Nothing else is needed in terms of personal details – learn the resume dos and don'ts .

2. Write a Summary of Why You’re Qualified for the Role

The resume summary is your hook to get recruiters engaged.

This gives you the opportunity to immediately make an impression by providing an overview of your strengths and career highlights.

Here’s some things you could talk about to prove you’re a qualified candidate:

  • Areas of expertise
  • Best skills
  • Relevant core values
  • Quantified results

Or, this space could be used for writing about your resume objectives .

3. Describe Your Skills in the Work Experience Section

All resumes need to show what to write in a resume for work experience . It’s the most important section. There’s no way around it except on rare occasions.

Only list the jobs with transferable skills. If not, then it defeats the purpose of a skills-based format.

Aim for at least 2-3 job titles with at least 2-3 how many bullet points per job on resume under each role. These should still be listed in reverse chronological order, so starting from the most recent job position first and then going back to the oldest.

When it comes to writing the bullet points, focus on describing the skills you’ve learned and developed. Highlight relevant responsibilities as well as the results of your actions.

4. List Qualifications in the Education Section

Formal qualifications such as your university degree belong in the how to list education on resume .

This includes the following:

  • University degree
  • Place of study
  • Date of graduation

Your academic background is also an indicator of your skills and knowledge. Unlike the standard resume format though, this section could go after the resume summary followed by your work experience.

5. Categorize Your Skills

Use the skills section to group your skills together into specific categories.

On top of making them easier to read through by adding structure, it highlights your expertise in different areas. This is ideal for a functional resume format because it helps create the impression that you have a diverse skill set.

However, don't go off listing everything you can. Only mention relevant skills for the role.

6. Use Additional Sections to Further Showcase Your Skills

You’re naturally at a disadvantage when you lack work experience.

Besides putting more emphasis on your skills, another way to make up for it is by using additional resume sections. For example, write about volunteering experience. Or include a certifications section to make a list of certificates you’ve earned.

Other sections may include:

  • Involvement

Tips for Structuring a Skills-Based Resume Format

There are other ways to structure your application. Here’s a few examples to explain what I mean:

  • Work experience doesn’t always have to go last
  • The summary section could still be omitted
  • You don’t always have to categorize your skills

Ultimately, it’s your application. Review both your strengths and the job description to determine how to best present your value. From there, customize your resume accordingly.

To be specific, we’ll go through some functional resume samples with different structures.

Example 1: Start With Your Academic Background

After the summary section, it brings us to the main body of your resume. This can begin with your academic background by putting the education section first followed by the work experience section.

Here’s an example below.

Second year student resume

Example 2: Start With Your Experience

Work experience could be the first section of your resume even if you decide not to write a summary.

Although the work history could be saved until last, the reality is that doing this can make career gaps more noticeable. Whereas, structuring your resume in a similar format as the standard resume suggests there’s nothing to hide since you’re embracing your career timeline.

However, the only difference is that it’s mainly focused on showcasing your skills. Here’s an example below.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of a Functional Resume

  • It helps conceal gaps in your employment timeline
  • Positions you as a qualified candidate despite having limited experience
  • Enables you to create a more customized resume

Disadvantages

  • Doesn’t provide a clear picture or narrative of your professional growth
  • Some companies might not accept them

Are Skills-Based Resumes Any Good Then?

They’re effective when you don’t have much direct work experience. The skills-based format prompts recruiters to determine your competency through transferable skills and knowledge. It positions you as a qualified professional by leaning more towards what you could offer to the company.

Do Employers Prefer Skills-Based Resumes?

The reverse chronological resume is preferable because it’s the most common resume format. As skills-based resumes put more attention to your skills, it raises questions about your work experience. But a good counter to this is following a similar structure to the standard resume and using cover letters .

Final Thoughts

The skills-based resume is often approached the wrong way.

Some people write them with the main priority of hiding career gaps rather than proving their value. It does technically help you do this by putting less attention on your work history and more on your skills…

But that shouldn’t be your biggest priority. Otherwise, it tends to lead to taking things out of context and writing fluff.

Establish your expertise by customizing your resume with the appropriate sections based on your strengths.

Or at least, use the steps in this guide to communicate that you’re the person with the most potential.

How to write a skills-based resume: step-by-step

Skills-based resume template, key takeaways: skills based resume.

A skills-based resume is a type of resume format , which allows you to put forth your best qualities relevant to the job you're interested in.

This is achieved by making the “skills” section the main focus of your resume , while the “ work experience ” and “ education ” sections take the back seat.

Why is the emphasis on skills so important?

Even if job titles stay the same, the tasks, projects, and things you can learn from them can vary a lot. In the professional world, people in the same job position don't always have the exact same skills . Each person's unique set of skills is shaped by their individual experiences, tasks, and personal growth.

Choosing the right resume format is all about pointing the recruiters' attention to your strengths and away from your weaknesses. And choosing the right strategy (i.e. resume format) depends on your situation.

A skills-based resume may be an excellent choice in case you:

  • Want to change careers . You decided to step into uncharted territory and switch careers or industries.
  • Are a recent graduate. Finding a job right after graduation is notoriously difficult, mainly because you don't have any professional experience.
  • Have little to no relevant experience. Your interest in a specific job may come from volunteering or pursuit of your passion outside of work.
  • Have a gap on in resume. You may have chosen to take a break from your career for any personal or health-related reason.
  • Are a job hopper. You've held a great deal of different jobs, but not for a very long time.

All of these scenarios have one thing in common: lack of continuous, long-term work experience in a specialized position .

Which is why you want to make the recruiters notice your skills first.

Skills-based resume vs. chronological resume: What's the difference?

The key differences between a skills-based resume and its more traditional counterpart (chronological resume) lie in their focus and structure.

1. Focus

  • A skills-based resume focuses on your, well, skills. It answers the question “ What can you do ?” rather than “ Show me where have you worked .”
  • A chronological resume , on the other hand, focuses on presenting work experience in reverse chronological order. Chronological resume is a great fit for seasoned professionals with a stable work history. If you've been on a consistent career path, with each job building on the last, this is the format for you.

2. Structure

The difference in their focus also reflects in their structures. Both skills-based resume and chronological resume dedicate the largest portion of their layout to showcase relevant skills and work experience respectively.

Skills-based resume structure

  • Contact information. Include your name, phone number, email, LinkedIn profile, and relevant social media accounts.
  • Professional summary. A short section which briefly states your career objectives and most relevant skills.
  • Skills (main focus). This is the most extensive and detailed section. We'll take a closer look at what to include in this section later in this article.
  • Work experience. If you have any, include 2-3 most recent ones (there probably won't be space for more).
  • Education. You should list them in chronological reverse.
  • Optional sections. May include volunteering, certificates, licences or awards.

Chronological resume  structure

  • Contact information . Include your name, phone number, email, LinkedIn profile, and relevant social media accounts.
  • Professional summary . Briefly state most notable experience and qualifications.
  • Work experience (main focus) . This is the most extensive and detailed part. Presents work experience in reverse chronological order. Details daily tasks and accomplishments connected to each of them in bullet points.
  • Education . Also chronologically reversed.
  • Skills . Eg. language competence or computer skills. Show the level of skills without much detail - most typically through infographics.
  • Optional sections . May include volunteering, licences, certificates or awards.

You may have heard someone referring to skills-based as a functional resume. It’s basically the same and these two terms are used interchangeably.

By now, we've identified the main attributes of a skills-based resume and established who would benefit most from using it.

Let's look at how to create an effective and well-organized skills based resume in 8 steps .

Go back to your job posting. Try to identify repeating keywords and phrases describing what the ideal candidate for that particular position should be like.

Each resume you send out has to be especially tailored to a specific job description. If you're struggling to identify what skills you need for a particular job, feel free to read job postings for the same position at different companies.

At the top of your resume, include a contact/personal information section which has your name, phone number, email, LinkedIn .

A 3-5 sentences long resume summary should highlight your key achievements and skills . It's an introduction to who you are professionally. Your summary must be concise, to the point, and eye-catching at the same time.

The skills section should be the most prominent one, both visually and content-wise . You can organize your skills into categories to highlight different aspects of your abilities. Tailor them as closely to the job description as possible.

You can be bries as this is not the main focus of a skills-based resume. Arrange your work experience entries in reverse chronological order , stating: your employer's name, dates of employment, and the role you held.

Make a note of: the name of the institution, what did you study, dates of study, and your GPA (if it's something you can be proud of).

For example, include: certificates, awards,  references , or licences pertaining to the job you wish to pursue.

In the following chapters, we look at each step in more detail and give you helpful tips and examples.

Step 1: Start with research!

Before you start writing, you must do a bit of research. Go back to your job posting. Read it again. Try to identify keywords and phrases describing what the ideal candidate for that particular position should be like.

Usually, you can find these under the heading “requirements” but it's not always that simple. The keywords you're looking for can be sometimes embedded in the text.

If you want to get invited to a job interview , you must show the recruiters that you have what they're looking for. Make sure your resume always caters to the specific needs of each job posting you respond to.

Step 2: Don't forget to always custom tailor your resume!

Each and every resume you send out has to be especially tailored to a specific job description . This is the golden rule.

If you're struggling to identify what skills you need for a particular job, feel free to read job postings for the same position at different companies . The competences should be somewhat similar across the board. Bonus points, if you also research the company and their culture.

Step 3: Create a clear resume header

Regardless of the format, every resume needs a header . Usually, it sits in the top-part of your resume. Make sure the header is clearly visually separated from the rest of the text.

  • Start with your full name in a slightly larger font, making it the focal point.
  • Include your contact information , such as phone number and professional email, ensuring they're easily accessible. If you're applying for a job abroad, don't forget to add correct country code before your phone number ( e.g. +421 *** *** ***).
  • Add your LinkedIn profile , personal website, or relevant social media accounts if relevant. In case you have all of the mentioned, pick only a few that will feature in your header.
  • Consider adding a photo. Including a  photo in your resume  is a topic of debate and it usually depends on location and industry.

Step 4: Introduce yourself with a compelling profile/summary

Write a concise summary at the beginning of your resume, highlighting your key achievements and skills . Treat it as an introduction to who you are professionally.

A resume summary should:

  • Be about 3-5 sentences long
  • Connect your skills to real-world accomplishments to add context
  • Mention your most impressive credentials and accomplishments

It should also be specific, to the point, and eye-catching at the same time.

Consider the following resume summary example:

Resume summary example

“Dedicated marketing professional with a robust skill set in digital strategy, content creation, and social media management. Proven track record of driving engagement and increasing brand visibility across various platforms. Proficient in SEO optimization and data analytics, with a keen eye for identifying market trends. Seeking to leverage these skills to elevate brand presence and contribute to dynamic marketing initiatives in a creative environment.“

If you're fresh out of school, your resume summary can look like this:

Student / recent graduate resume summary example

“Eager and detail-oriented recent graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. Proficient in programming languages, including Java and Python, with a strong foundation in software development principles. Adept at problem-solving and collaborating within team environments, as demonstrated through coursework projects. Excited to apply theoretical knowledge gained during academic pursuits to contribute to real-world projects and continue learning in a professional setting.”

Step 5: Let your skills take the centre stage

This section is the most prominent one, both visually and content-wise.

You can organize your skills into clusters or categories to highlight different aspects of your abilities. Align them as closely to the job description as possible.

  • Use sub-headings. Ideally, these would be directly connected to the key words found in the job posting. For example, if the advertisement calls for a candidate with time management, leadership, and communication skills, these should be your sub-headings.
  • Get into specifics . Underneath each subheading, put 3-4 bullet points where you will expand more on each skill. Describe your background with that skill and, if possible, also your successes.
  • Use quantifiers (if possible) . The truth is, job descriptions tend to be quite vague. Anyone can write that they have good communication skills, and perfect time management. But what exactly do these phrases mean? Using quantifiable metrics will show the impact of your contributions more effectively.

Take a look at these examples. Each deals with “leadership skills'' but from a different standpoint. Let's imagine that the first example was written by a person (A) leading a marketing campaign. Their skills description would look like this:

Leadership skills example A

  • Led a cross-functional team of 15 members, resulting in a 30% improvement in project efficiency.
  • Successfully guided a group through a challenging project, resulting in a 25% reduction in turnaround time.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership in implementing new strategies, contributing to a 15% increase in team morale and collaboration.

The second person (B) has spent the last two years working in retail, making their way up to the position of a store manager. Their “leadership skills” could be specified as follows:

Leadership skills example B

  • Led a retail team of 10 employees, fostering a collaborative environment that contributed to a 25% increase in overall sales.
  • Implemented effective training programs resulting in a 20% improvement in employee performance and customer engagement.
  • Utilized motivational strategies, leading to a 15% decrease in staff turnover and improved team morale.

What skills can you include in your skills-based resume?

In your skills based resume, you should include both hard and soft skills.

  • Soft skills. They're also called transferrable skills and are characterized as interpersonal, non-technical know-how. Transferable skills are skills you've acquired through experience in one job position; but which can also be applicable in different professional contexts. These are gained over time and cannot be taught using a textbook. Communication, time management, and leadership are all examples of transferable skills .
  • Hard skills. These are specific, technical proficiencies that can be learned, measured, and quantified.

1. Soft skills

These are especially useful to career changers, recent graduates, or people with little work experience – people who would benefit from a skills-based resume.

Soft skills are more about your personal qualities and how you navigate the social aspects of your job.

Soft skills act as a universal toolkit, highlighting your flexibility and professionalism. Spotting and highlighting these skills on your resume is key.

If you aren't sure which soft skills to incorporate into your resume, take a look at top soft skills employers can't resist . You'll certainly find a few you are good at.

2. Hard skills

Another kind of skills you can draw from are hard skills. These are specific, technical proficiencies that can be measured and quantified.

Examples of hard skills include technical skills like:

  • data analysis
  • using specific software and tools (Microsoft tools, Photoshop, etc.)
  • language skills

Hard skills are often job-specific and can be precisely defined and evaluated.

Step 6: Mention your work experience

As this is not the main focus of a skills-based resume, let's be brief.

Arrange your work experience entries in reverse chronological order , stating:

  • your employer's name,
  • dates of employment,
  • and the role you held.

Don't go into detail on your competences and responsibilities – this isn't the space for this. Any relevant skills should be addressed in the “skills section”.

Remember that internships also count as work experience.

Your work experience entry can look something like this:

"XYZ Events Company | Party Organizer

January 2021-November 2023"

Step 7: Don't forget to showcase your education

Again, list your  education entries  in reverse chronological order. Make a note of:

  • name of the institution,
  • what did you study,
  • dates of study,
  • your GPA (if it's something you can be proud of ;) )

Here is an example of what your education entries can look like:

“St. Andrew's University, Scotland

Bachelor of Science in Communication Technologies

GPA 3.9  |  2016-2020“

Step 8: Show additional skills through optional sections

Do you feel that there's still more to share? There's a way to sneak them in.

If you have some space left, you can dedicate it to anything that can boost your value and desirability. You can, for example, include:

  • volunteering
  • certificates
  • licences  relevant to the job you wish to pursue.

Be ready to provide proof  of your awards, certificates, or licences when asked to.

After theory comes practice. We'll now walk through a specific skills-based resume example and analyse its key features.

Here's a skills based resume template:

Skills based resume example

This resume was written by our experienced resume writers specifically for this profession.

What's so good about this resume?

  • The  header  is the very first thing that grabs your attention. Barbara made sure we won't overlook her name.
  • Her inclusion of both her phone number and email address enables recruiters to access her  contact details  easily.
  • In her  summary/profile , you'll notice her usage of keywords, such as “effective team player,” “communication,” or “time management.” She directly states what value she'd bring to the company.
  • Barbara divided her  skills section  into  several categories , each with its own  sub-heading .
  • She decided to list her  hard skills  (languages and computer skills), as well as  her soft, or transferable, skills  (communication, multitasking, teamwork, critical thinking, etc.).
  • Notice that instead of  bullet points,  she decided to indicate the level of her skills via  infographics . While it gives the resume a more sophisticated and sleek look, recruiters may find this less persuasive.
  • Her education entries are in  reverse chronological order .
  • Since Barbara is yet to finish her studies, she lacks any practical work experience. Instead, she chose to highlight her  volunteering experience .
  • Finally, she included a section “ certificates ” where she mentions her  driver's licence . At first, this might seem redundant, but this is a common requirement in many professions.

Everyone knows that formatting resumes is a particularly tedious and annoying ordeal. Why waste time battling with divisions and margins – with these  resume templates  you can have a skills-based resume in seconds. Save yourself time and sanity. Be like Barbara.

Want a skills-based resume yourself?

With our Resume Builder you can have a skills-based resume in seconds.

A skills-based resume  prioritizes skills over work history , offering a unique approach to showcasing your abilities, qualifications, and competences.

It's ideal for career changers, recent graduates, those with limited experience, gaps in employment, or varied job histories – for anyone who doesn't have a continuous, long-term work experience history.

You can include any relevant soft (transferrable) or hard skills that will convince the recruiters that you are the right fit for the job. Our tips for well-organized and easy-to-read “skills section” include:

  • Organize your skills into  categories  related to the job description.
  • Use  sub-headings  aligned with keywords from the job posting.
  • Use  specific keywords and quantifiers  for the biggest impact.

Regardless of its format, any resume works best when in tandem with a good  cover letter . Don't forget to attach one to yours.

Section-Wise Resume Writing Tips

Follow the below-given tips for each resume section.

Writing An Engaging Resume Objective For A Skill-Based Resume

  • Make sure to customize your objective statement for each position you apply to. Research the job description and identify the key skills and qualifications they are seeking. Then, highlight those skills in your objective.
  • Since you’re using a skill-based resume format, focus on highlighting your key skills and areas of expertise.
  • If you have any notable achievements or accomplishments related to your skills, include them in your objective statement.
  • Clearly state how your skills can benefit the organization and contribute to its success.
  • Aim to keep your objective statement brief and focused.

What Should You Do If Your Work History Has Gaps?

Highlight important skills Focus on your accomplishments and skills that are relevant to the position you are looking for rather than discussing your career history.

Use a suitable header Use “Relevant Experience” or “Professional Skills” as a heading rather than “Work Experience.”

Think about including volunteer or freelance work Any volunteer work or self-employment you have done must be listed here in place of any paid employment experience. This demonstrates how you utilized your talents while out of the job.

Fill in the gaps in your resume You should address any gaps in your professional experience in your cover letter even though you don’t have to on your resume. Give a good justification for such gaps, and briefly describe how you spent the time.

How To Highlight Your Education In A Skill-Based Resume?

Position your education section strategically : In a skill-based resume, the education section typically comes after the skills section. Place it towards the end of your resume, following the skills and qualifications that are more directly relevant to the position you’re applying for.

Include relevant coursework or projects : If you pursued coursework or completed projects that are directly related to the skills or industry you’re targeting, include them in your education section.

Highlight certifications or specialized training : If you have obtained any certifications, licenses, or completed specialized training programs that are relevant to the position, make sure to include them in your education section.

Mention academic honors or awards : If you received any notable academic honors, scholarships, or awards during your education, consider mentioning them in your education section.

Keep it concise : When listing your educational details, focus on the most relevant information and keep it concise. Include the name of the institution, degree earned, major or field of study, and the graduation year. If you have multiple degrees or extensive education history, consider including only the most recent and highest level of education.

Use formatting to your advantage : Format your education section in a clear and organized manner. Use bullet points or a table format to present your educational details neatly. Ensure consistency in formatting throughout your resume.

Why You Should Use the Skill-Based Resume Templates

A skill-based resume template is an asset to any job candidate looking to showcase their abilities. While other resume types may focus on work history or degree earned, a skill-based resume highlights what really matters: your professional skill set. This is what most hiring managers are looking for, so it’s a great option for job seekers who strive to stand out from other applicants. You can accomplish this with a resume that emphasizes the skills you’ll bring to the workplace.

A resume template that focuses on your skills is also ideal for candidates who may lack experience or education. If you worry that your resume might make you look lacking, consider using a skill-based resume template. This template devotes most of its space to a description of your skillset, thus drawing managers’ attention to your strengths rather than potential weak spots.

4 Skill-Based Resume Templates FAQs

Which is the best resume template to use.

There is no one-size-fits-all resume. It’s difficult to say that one is the best, and different types of resumes are ideal for different job candidates and different positions. The key is to choose one that conveys the message you want to send. Do you want bright colors and a unique design that reflects your creative side? Do you want to highlight all of the relevant experience you’ve gained from past jobs? When applying to a position that requires a variety of technical or other specific skills, skill-based resume templates may be the best choice.

Is the skill-based resume template free?

If you’ve researched different types of resumes and decided that a skill-based resume template is the right one for you, great news — it’s free to try out! If you decide to sign up, you can access a library of other resume templates, too, as well as plenty of resume-writing resources. How should I format the skill-based resume template?

By nature, a skill-based resume template is formatted to emphasize your professional skills above your experience, education, and other features of a resume. That said, you will still likely want to include your recent work history and education if you have earned a relevant degree. To format your work history information, you should write it in reverse-chronological order, meaning that you list your most recent jobs first and older jobs following. Similarly, to format your educational history, list your most recent degree first if you possess a degree that is relevant to the job.

A job resume is a short, sweet, and to-the-point document that spotlights your professional experience. It’s basically a summary.

Whether you’ve been in the workforce for 15+ years, have no job experience, or are somewhere in between, resumes have been sparking fear and dread in job seekers since approximately 1482 when Leonardo De Vinci drafted what became known as the first resume .

Resumes are what just about any place of employment requests when you apply for a job. Companies—big and small—wanna know:

◉ What skills do you bring to the job? ◉ Do you have relevant work experience for the role? ◉ Do you want to work for them?

A good resume answers those questions—and isn’t so unlike De Vinci’s resume that honed in on how he could meet the specific needs and challenges of the Duke of Milan.

The best resume template is the one that complements your personality and allows the space you need to highlight your finest work, top achievements, and job skills.

Every resume template you see on this page has been thoroughly vetted by hiring experts to ensure they include everything you need to help you land your next job. Whether you’re applying to a funky tech startup or looking to join the ranks of a reputable law firm, you’ll find a professional resume template that speaks to you.

Hunting for a new job is incredibly stressful as there’s a lot of uncertainty in the process. And while these resume templates won’t alleviate all stress, they’ll ensure your resume has everything you need to sail through an applicant tracking system (ATS) and impress hiring managers.

Try saying “applicant tracking system” 10 times fast, and you’ll know why it got shortened to ATS.

At its core, an applicant tracking system puts the gas on hiring. Typically, when folks think about ATS software, they think about it weeding out resumes that don’t include the right skills or qualifications.

That’s certainly true enough, but the ATS also helps HR and recruiters organize and sort job candidates, keeps track of communication with job seekers, sets up interviews, and does a host of other not-so-fascinating things.

Basically, when you choose an ATS-friendly resume template from BeamJobs, you can rest easy knowing that the document itself will make it through the software

When it comes to your resume, it will house these staple sections:

◉ Contact info (Triple-check the spelling of your name; see the question about “how to make a resume” for a cringe-worthy BeamJobs blunder.) ◉ Work experience ◉ Skills ◉ Education

Depending on your occupation and years of experience, you could add these optional resume sections:

◉ Resume summary or resume objective ◉ Hobbies and interests ◉ Projects (an umbrella term for things like volunteer experience, academic or personal projects, etc.)

The more relevant job experience you have, the longer the “work experience” section of your resume should be since that’s what employers care about most. On the other hand, when you’ve recently graduated and don’t have much (or any) experience, things like education and projects can take up more real estate on your resume.

Whatever your professional background, our resume maker lets you re-arrange, remove, and add sections as needed to your resume template.

Not to blast our own horns, but we’ve reviewed tens of thousands of resumes in the last few years. Would you believe we’ve actually seen resumes without a name ?! Besides discovering disheartening news like that, we’ve figured out  how to make a good resume .

There are plenty of resume tips we could give you, but here are three that, when followed, will most increase your chances of snagging an interview:

Use numbers to showcase your impact in past roles. Your work experience should focus on your measurable accomplishments, not on job responsibilities.

Tailor your resume for each job you apply to, which means reading each job description carefully. As you read, see if any prior work projects come to mind. Include those projects on your resume.

Avoid grammar and spelling errors. We know, you’ve heard it before. But you’d be aghast (fun word) at the number of folks rejected for a job because of this. (C ough cough We won’t say his real name, but one of our team members whose title rhymes with re-bounder once sent out 20 resumes with his name spelled ‘Stepen.’)

One page—plain and simple.

While you might get away with a two-page resume if you’ve got 10-plus years of experience under your hat, keep in mind that recruiters and hiring managers aren’t giving your resume the time of day it deserves anyway. Instead, why not leverage a  cover letter maker  to explain some of those details you had to leave off your resume?

The most painful part of building a resume is editing yourself. How can your entire career fit into four or five bullet points for each job you’ve had? Here’s some good news: if you’re a senior engineer, it’s totally cool to drop from your resume the server job you had in college.

Even if you whittled the jobs you’d include down to three or four, try starting with a basic  resume outline . Fill it to your heart’s content; then, review every job experience bullet point individually and ask, “Does this point show my expertise and say something new?” If the answer’s no, exclude it. Before you know it, you’ll have a polished one-page resume.

How to Write a Skills Based Resume

Quick Navigation:

What is a skills based resume?

When to use a skills based resume, how to write a skills based resume, skills based resume template, skills based resume example.

If you’re applying for a position with many skills and accomplishments to feature, you should use a resume format that highlights them properly. A skills based resume lists your skills at the top of the document to help it stand out to hiring managers. In this article, you can learn more about a skills based resume and how to include the skills that are relevant to the role you’re applying for.

A skills based resume, also known as a functional resume, is a resume format that focuses more directly on your skills. This format differs from a chronological format because a skills based resume list your skills at the top while a chronological resume lists your experience at the top and skills toward the middle or bottom. Many job applicants use a skills based resume to better emphasize their relevant skills to capture the hiring manager’s attention.

Here are some reasons to consider when you should use a skills based resume format:

  • You’ve served in internships, volunteer work or temporary positions
  • You have large gaps in your employment history
  • You’re switching to a new field or industry and have unrelated work experience
  • You’re a recent graduate with little to no work experience
  • All of your experience is from different positions within the same company

These are some of the most common instances when a skills based resume is the best format to use when styling your resume.

Follow the steps below to write an effective skills based resume:

1. First, note your relevant skills

Before writing your resume, you should determine what skills you have and note them. Try to only list skills relevant to the position. For example, if you’re applying for a role as a writer, you should list skills like researching, proofreading or editing. Research skills related to your specific position to gain a better idea of which skills are best to mention on a resume.

2. Second, input your contact information

You can now start writing your resume by inputting your contact information. In the header, input your first and last name, followed by your email address and phone number. You can also add your physical address, if desired. Listing your contact information at the top of your resume makes it easy for employers to quickly discover how to reach you.

3. Third, list each of your relevant skills and align them with the job posting

List your skills at the top of your resume. Since this is one of the first sections the hiring manager may see, you should list as many relevant skills as possible that may stand out to them. The employer is searching for skills that directly relate to their position. View the job posting for the role to learn which skills they prefer or require and use those throughout your resume. This tells the hiring manager you have the skills they need to be successful in the position.

4. Fourth, feature your skills in the job experience section

As you build the work experience section of your resume, list the skills you used and any accomplishments you made while performing these tasks. Write the company you worked at, followed by the job title you worked in, your start and end date as well as the city and state the company is located in. If you worked in a temporary role, internship or volunteer position, list these in this section if you believe they’re relevant to the qualifications of the role you’re applying for.

You can then list your responsibilities and accomplishments in separate bullet points. Start each line with an action verb. Detail each responsibility you completed and use numbers as proof of any accomplishments you made or the results you brought the company. Try to include each skill you used when describing your work responsibilities. This gives the hiring managers a better understanding of how your experience and skills can benefit their company.

5. Next, add your education

List your education in its own section under your work experience. Use a chronological style when adding your education by mentioning your most recent institution first. Write the name of the school you attended, followed by the degree you earned. Add the city and state of the school as well as your graduation date. Review the job posting to ensure your education matches the required education listed in the document.

You can also list any academic achievements during your time at the institution. This can include listing a high GPA you earned, any academic organizations you were a member of, honors programs you were a part of or scholarships you received. This allows hiring managers to see your dedication to improving your education and learning more about your field of study.

6. Finally, mention any languages you’re fluent in

If you’re fluent in more than one language, this can impress hiring managers and may help your resume stand out among other applicants. Mention any languages you speak by listing them at the bottom of your resume in their own section.

You can use the template below to help you build an effective functional resume:

When I consult people on resume writing, the most common question that I am asked it is about the content and what components to add or avoid, when they have less than 5 years of work experience.

On this platform, you not only have access to many options, but you get guidance on what to choose and why. When the work experience is less than 5 years, the other components such as languages, projects, volunteering experiences, hobbies etc, make a huge difference.

What is a resume.

A resume is a brief summary of personal and professional experiences, skills, and education history. Its main purpose is to show off your best self to potential employers.

When applying for a job, you’re (in most cases) going to be asked for a resume accompanied by a cover letter.

If you manage to create a “good” resume, you’re going to 2x your chances of getting hired . Want to learn how? Check out our complete guide on how to make a resume .

How to Write a Resume for Your First Job?

The process of writing a resume might seem super scary to you. After all, most resume examples you see on the web are 80% about work experience. So, what the heck can you include in your resume if you have none?

Well, here’s some good news. If you’re applying for an entry-level job or an internship, no one expects you to have ANY work experience.

Instead, you should focus on what you DO have: education, projects, volunteering experience, hobbies & interests.

If you want to personalize your resume a bit more, you can also include the following sections:

Volunteering experience

Hobbies & interests

For more information on how to place these sections on your resume, check out our article on what to put on a resume .

How to Format a Resume?

There are 3 typical resume formats:

Reverse-Chronological Resume

Functional Resume

Combination Resume

In 99% of the cases, you’ll want to go with the Reverse Chronological resume format. That’s the format most resumes you’ve seen follow - its main focus is your work experience, written down in reverse-chronological order.

Unless you’re looking to create a career change resume , we’d recommend sticking with this format.

If you want to learn more about resume formats , check out our comparison guide.

How Long Should a Resume Be?

Ah, the most popular resume question in the world: “how long should your resume be?”

Short answer: one page. If you have a lot of work experience (10 years +), sometimes it makes sense to make it 2 pages MAX if everything you mention is super relevant for the position you’re applying for.

Long answer: check out our guide on how long should a resume be .

P.S. all of our templates are one-page resume templates, so you shouldn’t have a lot of trouble sticking to the one-page limit!

How to Write a Resume Summary?

Your resume summary is a “hook” that goes on top of your resume. Think of it as an introduction to the rest of your resume. It should, in 2-4 sentences, explain what your background is, and why it’s relevant for the position you’re applying for.

Want your resume summary to stand out? Use this proven formula:

“Professional [job title] with X+ years of work experience in [job responsibility] . In the past Y years, I have [your top 1-2 achivements] . Seeking a position of [job title] at [company name] ”

To learn more about how to create a resume summary that excels, check out our guide.

On the other hand, if you’re a student or just don’t have a lot of work experience, read our article on how to create a resume objective instead.

How to List Work Experience on a Resume

Work experience on a resume is one of those things that’s easy to learn, hard to master.

Each work experience entry should contain the following:

Position title

Company name/description/location

Achievements or responsibilities

Dates employed

Now, if you want to create a work experience section that stands out , you want to focus on quantifiable achievements. What this means is, instead of creating an entry like:

“Carried out sales operations”

You list an achievement:

“Hit and exceeded monthly sales KPIs for 5 months in a row.”

This shows the employer that you’re not just a random candidate, you’re an A-player! To learn more about how to list achievements in your work experience (and land the job), check out our article.

How to List Skills on a Resume?

Simply create a ”skills” section on your Novorésumé resume template, and list your top skills. We usually recommend going for a mix of hard and soft skills.

Not sure what skills to include in your resume? Check out these 101 essential skills for any resume .

How to Make a Cover Letter For a Resume?

Every job application asks for a cover letter (in addition to your resume). Here are some of our tips on how to do this right:

Customize your cover letter to the employer. The more personalized it is, the more likely it is for the recruiter to like you

Outline your general background (work experience, profession, etc.) and mention your top 2-3 achievements to show off your skills

If you really want to stand out, create a cover letter that matches your resume template. To do this, you can use one of our cover letter templates here.

If you want to learn more about how to write a convincing cover letter , check out our comprehensive guide.

What is the Best Resume Template?

There’s no such thing as “the best resume template” - every recruiter/employer has their own personal preference. Our general recommendation is to do your research on the company and what their values are.

For example, if you’re applying for a position at a bank, you’d want a more professional resume template. On the other hand, if you want a job in a startup where they value innovation more, you should stick to a creative resume template .

Finally, if you’re still not sure which type of template is right for the job you’re applying for, you can just use a simple resume template just to be safe.

Professional templates perfect for any industry

Why use a resume template?

Resume templates are handy tools for job seekers for a number of reasons. Firstly, it allows you to spend more time polishing up the content instead of worrying about the layout and design.

Secondly, it gives first-time job applicants a better idea of how much to write and the sections to focus on. This also applies if you’ve been out of the job market for a while and haven’t had to edit your resume recently.

Before you sprint ahead to the templates, here are some resume dos and don’ts you should know.

Resume dos and don’ts

  • Highlight your most relevant experience, skills, and accomplishments
  • Include keywords from the job description in your resume where it fits organically
  • Triple check your resume for grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Use data specific examples where possible (e.g. “increased sales by 30% by doing x”)
  • Include non-academic and non-professional experiences, such as volunteer work or side projects
  • Use powerful verbs to describe your work (e.g “amplified”, “executed”, “maximized”)
  • Include your contact information
  • Keep your bullet points to under two lines
  • Ask someone you trust to go over your resume with you
  • Create a master resume. This will make it easier to tailor your resume to any job
  • Include all your relevant credentials
  • Save your resume file as something with your name on it. This will make it easier for managers and HR folk to locate your files
  • Be consistent throughout your application. This means using the same fonts, styles, and naming conventions on your file.
  • Showcase your soft skills
  • Print out copies of your resume for interviews

Don’t

  • Include obvious skills (e.g. gmail)
  • Include irrelevant hobbies or interests. That space can be better utilized for highlighting your achievements and skills
  • Include work experiences during high school unless you’re a recent graduate
  • Use an objective sentence. These are widely considered to be outdated, and only relevant if you are changing careers
  • Hide gaps in your resume. Be confident when explaining the gap and speak on the skills you learned during that time
  • Use cliches or too much jargon. Oftentimes, the first person reading your resume will be from HR
  • Write overly complex sentences. Keep it straightforward and easy to understand
  • Use more than two fonts
  • Include photos (unless you’re applying for a role in the arts)
  • Include your salary history. Save that for the negotiation process

How to optimize your resume for ATS

If you’re applying for a job, there is a very high chance that the resume will first be seen by some software before it makes its way to a pair of human eyes. This software is called an Applicant Tracking System and it sorts, scans, and ranks job applications that come through to a recruiter or employer .

ATS helps recruiters filter through candidates by scanning for relevant information and keywords in an application. Writing a resume that is ATS optimized is imperative, as you could potentially miss out on opportunities even if you’re qualified.

Here are some ways to ensure your resume is ATS-friendly:

  • Keep graphics to a minimum
  • Incorporate keywords and phrases used in the job description. Don’t overdo this, as resumes with a high match can be flagged for gaming the system
  • Save your resume as a PDF (you can easily export as PDF once you’ve edited your Word resume template)
  • Some ATS software can’t read data in the header or footer. Ensure all your important information is in the body of your resume
  • Avoid using too much formatting
  • Make your resume easy to read, for robots and humans. This means avoiding overly wordy sentences and abbreviations where appropriate

The ultimate goal of a resume is not to land you the job – it’s to prompt the hiring manager to initiate an interview based on what he or she has read. A quality resume is best viewed as a tool that articulates your “story,” from which you can present yourself as the most qualified candidate.

Essential Tips for Using Your Resume Template

When you have decided on which resume template to use, you should download it and save a copy to your computer. You can then start to personalize the template content to make it your own .

Let’s take a look at some tips for personalizing your template so it becomes unique to you:

1. First things first, keep things simple

Your resume template has been professionally designed for the right balance of style and content. All our templates are easily editable with Microsoft Word so all you have to do is just type in your information in the sections provided for you.

2. Don’t overload your resume

Your resume isn’t a record of your whole life. You don’t need to add in absolutely everything you have ever done. Remember that a recruiter will be skimming over your resume looking for their preferred keywords and your relevant information and work experience for the job at hand. Give them the information they are looking for as quickly and as easily as possible. Read our blog post about Powerful Words to use in your Resume .

3. Unique file name

Our resume templates are delivered with the generic (and frankly not so creative) name “resume.doc”. Before emailing or uploading your resume, take a second and give it a file name that is easily recognizable, such as your first name initial and your surname. This way it will be easy to spot and open by the recruiter.

4. Proofread and proofread again

Proofreading your resume is so important. You want to create the right first impression so check over your resume again for errors or spelling mistakes. Get someone else to proofread it for you before you send it off or make use of a grammar and spelling checker.

5. Convert it to PDF

Chances are your resume makes use of custom fonts, has a special layout or design elements that may break or look bad once opened on a different computer because the custom fonts are missing, the MS Word version is older or whatever. So, once you have done editing your document and double checked that you haven’t missed any of the above points, we recommend saving your document as a PDF file to make sure that the recruiters will see the same thing as you do.

Present your experience clearly

Highlight examples of your skills and experiences matching the job you are applying for. Pay close attention to the details published in the vacancy notice.

Tailor your CV

Make sure you update the ‘About Me’ section to highlight why you are the best person for the job. Do not include a full detailed history. Focus on facts and main points that match the job you have in mind.

Make it readable

Make sure your CV is easy to read. Use clear and simple language.  Use strong verbs (e.g. ‘managed’, ‘developed’, ‘increased’).

Use reverse chronological order

Always list the most recent experience on the top followed by previous ones. In case of long gaps in working or learning, include an explanation.

Polish and fine-tune

Check for spelling and grammar mistakes, provide a professional e-mail address, and add a professional photograph of yourself.

Your Europass profile

Your Europass profile is the place to keep a record of all your skills, qualifications and experiences. If you keep your Europass profile up-to-date then you will always have all the information you need to create tailored CVs and job applications quickly.

Our Ranking Methodology for Best Resume Writing Services

To comprehensively and objectively rank the top resume writing services, it is essential to have a thorough methodology. The first step in this process was conducting extensive research and analysis. This involved gathering a comprehensive list of reputable resume-writing services from multiple sources such as online searches, customer reviews, industry directories, and personal recommendations.

  • Feature analysis: Evaluate the functionalities provided by each resume builder, considering elements like template variety and quality, customization flexibility, user-friendly editing and formatting options, import/export capabilities, spell check and grammar tools, and integration with job search platforms and professional networks.
  • Template collection: Examine the assortment and quality of templates. Look for a wide range that suits various industries, job levels, and design preferences, considering these templates’ aesthetics, readability, and contemporary design.
  • Editing and customization: Scrutinize the adaptability and user-friendliness of the editing and customization tools each resume builder provides. Assess the capacity to add or modify sections, reorganize content, and tailor resumes to specific job requirements.
  • User interface and experience: Analyze the user interface and the overall user experience each resume builder offers. Evaluate the ease of navigation, instruction clarity, guidance or prompts, and the platform’s responsiveness.
  • Integration with job search platforms: Determine whether resume builders offer seamless integration with popular job search platforms and professional networks like LinkedIn or ATS systems. Consider how well the resumes can be transferred and their compatibility with these platforms.
  • Additional resources: Evaluate if the resume builders provide extra resources such as sample resumes, tools for creating cover letters, interview tips, or career advice. Consider the breadth and practicality of these supplementary resources.
  • Mobile-friendliness: Gauge the mobile-friendliness and responsiveness of the resume builders, recognizing the growing trend of mobile job searching and application processes.
  • Customer support: Reflect on the accessibility and quality of customer support services, encompassing options like live chat, email support, or knowledge bases. Assess the responsiveness and helpfulness of the support team.
  • Pricing and value for money: Appraise the pricing plans presented by the resume builders in terms of the value they offer based on features, usability, and overall service quality.
  • Industry reputation: Consider the standing and trustworthiness of the resume builders, considering factors such as awards, recognition, partnerships, and user feedback from reputable sources.

Buyer’s Guide: Why Use a Resume Builder?

Crafting a well-crafted CV comes naturally to particular job seekers. However, even the most seasoned experts may need help in resume writing. If you find yourself in need of help with creating a compelling resume, here are several ways in which the best online resume builder can be beneficial:

Resume builders provide users with pre-designed templates and helpful tips, streamlining the process of writing a resume and alleviating stress.

Offers Writing Tips

Promoting oneself requires considerable effort. Only some people possess writing skills, even if they enjoy self-promotion. To showcase one’s experience and knowledge effectively, a resume builder can help select the most appropriate words and phrases.

Improves Design

In every field, there are unique standards for an impressive resume. If you need to gain knowledge in design or the tools, resume builders can provide free templates to enhance your resume’s visual appeal and quality.

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)

Recruiters often use ATS systems to scan resumes. A good resume builder will help with formatting to ensure that your resume is easy for these systems to read.

What’s the Best Resume Builder?

The ideal resume builder for each individual may differ according to their specific requirements. If you prefer a tool that offers step-by-step guidance in creating your resume, we suggest using a builder that provides helpful tips and recommendations. If you prefer a resume builder that auto-generates a summary, we recommend using a tool that extracts information from your LinkedIn profile.

For those who enjoy having creative control over their resumes, we suggest using a platform with features. By selecting the resume builder that aligns with your needs and suits your industry and personal style, you’ll significantly increase your chances of capturing the attention of hiring managers.

Resume Builder vs. Resume Writing Service: What Matters for You

When it comes to crafting a resume, there are three options available. You can opt to create it independently, use a resume builder tool, or enlist the services of a professional resume writer. Your best choice will depend on your writing abilities, available time, and financial resources.

Do-It-Yourself

You have the choice to construct a resume entirely by yourself. The benefit of this option is that it costs nothing but requires a significant amount of effort. Along with composing all the information, you must possess graphic design skills.

This approach works well if you have these abilities, but with them, your options for creating a resume are unlimited. To overcome this limitation, you can use a resume builder or enlist the help of a resume writing service.

Resume Builder

A tool for creating resumes allows you to input your details into a template, resulting in an original appearance and layout with no design work. The top resume building tools also offer suggestions on enhancing your resume and tailoring it to match the specific job you are applying for.

While you are still responsible for writing the content, once it is written, you can quickly transfer that information into any other template with just a few simple clicks. Some of these services are free and many like to promote themselves as such, but most require a small payment to download your finished resume.

Professional Resume Writing Service

Professional resume writing services are expensive, but they offer the convenience of handling all the work for you. An experienced writer will gather relevant information about your background and transform it into a unique and engaging resume.

The process typically takes a few days, and the level of originality in the outcome largely relies on your choice of company and writer. However, we will not delve into these services further in this guide.

Are Resume Builders Worth It?

Definitely, without a doubt. An effective resume creator will guarantee that your CV is formatted correctly to navigate Applicant Tracking Systems and ultimately reach the hands of recruiters.

Is It Unprofessional to Use a Microsoft Word Resume Template?

Relying on a template will not set you apart, and there is a high likelihood that your application will be dismissed because your resume is identical to those of other job seekers.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right resume builder is crucial in today’s competitive job market. Creating a professional and impactful resume that stands out from the crowd can significantly impact your job search. With the right tool, you can save time, improve your chances of landing an interview, and ultimately secure your dream job.

When selecting a resume builder, consider your specific needs and priorities. Look for features like customizable templates, industry-specific examples, and the ability to export your resume in different formats. Consider user reviews and ratings to ensure you choose a reputable and reliable platform.

Remember, an exceptional tool for crafting resumes should give you the power to present your skills, experience, and accomplishments effectively. It should simplify and expedite creating a resume without hassle. Investing in a reliable resume builder is investing in your professional future.

Therefore, explore the different options available for resume builders. Test out their free trials or demos and choose the best fit for your objectives. Our top recommendation is Super Star Resume . This meticulously designed resume can open doors to exciting career prospects and be a dependable companion on your journey toward success.
